NELSON MANDELA BAY MUNICIPALITY TOP COMPANIES

Metro announces top 50 ROSLYN BAATJIES

T

HE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality announced its 50 top companies for 2017 last Tuesday.

Councillor Andrew Whitfield, Member of Mayoral Committee for Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture, said at the an-

nouncement that Nelson Mandela Bay had of the most exciting prospects for future investments in South Africa. “It is largely an automotive economy with the potential to identify more and different sectors and explore for more investments. “The municipality has a proactive incentive strategy to attract investment especially in the service sector,” said Whitfield.

According to him, part of the strategy is to acknowledge existing and long-term investors in the metro. “And this is the purpose of identifying the top 50 companies. We want to acknowledge their contribution to the metro’s economy and ensure that they are constantly aware of the services offered by the municipality. “The message to be conveyed is that Nelson

Mandela Bay is a competitive and valuable investment destination.” Executive Mayor Athol Trollip added that the 50 companies were chosen because of their ability to attract investments, create jobs and increase exports. “Without economic growth we can not handle the challenge of job creation. of the Century!

“We do not want to look at job creation as our only goal. Our main objective is to grow the economy to create opportunities for people to work so that they can be independent.” This is the second time the 50 top companies are announced in the metro. The companies were chosen by a panel representing the municipality, the Eastern Cape Development Corporation, the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, the National African Federated Chamber of Commerce (Nafcoc) and the Eastern Cape Exporters Club. Trollip said despite the national economic challenges, many of the local companies are still growing in a global competitive market. “On the list there are 26 new companies and many existing companies. We want to ensure that we have a strategy to maintain them and that there should be competition among

What we want to do in the metro is to pay tribute to those who are successful and we want to create competition by giving them recognition.” According to him, the list was not classified according to a particular order, as each company delivers value and output in a unique and benefi-

cial way. “The criteria used to assess companies include top investors, longstanding (established) companies and top-level job creators.” Trollip has made special mention of companies such as Algoa Bus Company, Coega Dairy, Continental, Aspen, Jendamark, Lear Corporation, Volkswagen, Sundays River Citrus Cooperative and BKB. The award ceremony will take place at the Boardwalk Conference Centre on June 6, 2017.

Safety at dump sites under spotlight ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL THE recent deaths of two persons and robberies at the Arlington waste disposal site has put the safety at such sites under the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s spotlight. Deputy Executive Mayor Mongameli Bobani, who is also the Member of Mayoral Committee: Public Health, said that strict measures would be put into place, which would include the South African Police Service and Metro Police to patrol the area regularly. Bobani was speaking during a visit to the Arlington waste disposal site last Tuesday. The visit follows the death of Amos Dywili, who was trampled by a heavy-duty truck, and the stabbing of Horan Omni at Arlington two weeks ago. Arlington is a hive of activity which sees an estimated 500 vehicles daily and numerous informal workers who collect recyclable material for a service provider that is currently employed by the municipality. “I want to assure residents and service providers that this is not a place where people will die. I came to inspect why people are robbed and that someone had to die. What I have observed at the site is that we have to increase the security here,” Bobani said. He pointed out that the criminal incidents impacted negatively on the War on Waste campaign of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Directorate of Public Health. “We don’t want to say we are cleaning the city, but when we encourage people to come and dump their refuse here (at Arlington), they are being robbed. So we will definitely increase the security to ensure that this is

Deputy Executive Mayor Mongameli Bobani (right) inspects the Arlington waste disposal site with supervisor Phakamisa Dlula. a place where people can come freely and dump their waste.” Bobani reiterated that there would be no tolerance of people who dump their waste illegally. “This is a place where residents can legally dump their waste and where the

waste will be recycled. They must not dump in the townships. We will fine them. They will receive fines of up to R1000,” Bobani warned. He added that he had already engaged with the Mayoral Committee Member for

Safety and Security, Councillor John Best, about safety issues at this site and others across the city. “I am pleased to tell you that he has already made a commitment to beef up security and also to engage the SA Police Service to assist,” said Bobani.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) tasked the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) with restoring the Campanile after the landmark was found to be structurally unsafe and in need of maintenance. The building has been standing in Strand Street since 1922 and was built to commemorate the arrival of the 1820 Settlers.

The Campanile’s carillon, which consists of 23 bells, is also being restored in the process. The restoration process started in March last year. Luvuyo Bangazi, Marketing and Communications Manager of the MBDA, confirmed that the restoration of the Campanile is nearly complete.

SADAG is currently looking for recovered patients, family members, psychologists or teachers to help run support groups in their respective communities on mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and trauma. To this end, SADAG will be hosting Support Group Leader Workshops in Port Elizabeth on May 27. The organisation’s main aim is to destigmatise mental health issues in South Africa. One way the NGO works towards this is by setting up support groups countrywide. These groups run once or twice a month and offer anyone suffering from a mental illness, as well as their loved ones, a place of warmth, understanding and support. Research shows that support groups can help people cope with and recover from a wide variety of problems. They are able to provide information on the illness and ways to treat and manage it, as well as help give patients and loved ones names of places where further help and assistance can be found. They also allow members the opportunity to form connections with others experiencing similar troubles and to learn from one another in a non-judgmental, confidential atmosphere. “Many people in my group have felt and experienced similar things,” shared Johannesburg Support Group Leader, Jane. “Opening up in a group, discussing these things in a group, helps people understand they are not weird, different or alone – we understand, we’ve been there and we are there to help.” For more info contact Lara or Tiffany on 080 021 2223 or 080 070 8090.

State of Algoa Park road surface a thorny issue ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL TRAFFIC volumes have increased rapidly over the past years and the maintenance of busy roads in Algoa Park have not been kept up, leading to their deterioration. These are the sentiments of Algoa Park resident Marcel Victor who is up in arms about the state of especially the St Leonard’s and Dyke Road intersection in this suburb. “On September 15 last year I called the call centre of the municipality about the state of the crossing on the corner of St Leonard’s and Dyke Road. “A part of the road disintegrated and the rest of the crossing has potholes. I also complained about the white centre lines in Dyke Road which have faded. There was no response,â€? said Victor. He added that he had also sent a number of emails to various municipal officials regarding the issue and received no response. “In my complaint I mentioned that the pot-

hole in the centre of the crossing had been repaired previously, but since then caved in. The part which is especially bad is opposite the electricity substation at the Engen garage. A frustrated Victor said he had received reference numbers for his complaints but to date heard nothing from the municipality. Upon a query from the PE Express, Nelson Mandela Bay Munipality’s spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki, said that Victor’s complaint was noted. “The road will need resurfacing for which we do not have (the) budget in this financial year, ending in June. It is planned and budgeted for the next financial year, Mniki said. “However, work continues in other areas inclusive of the same ward to repair damaged roads as per this year’s financial planning and budgeting. Mniki added that road markings would be done by the end of this week, weather permitting.

Fourleaf Estate is Africa’s greenest development REPORTER FOURLEAF Estate, a residential development in Port Elizabeth, was declared Africa’s greenest residential development by The Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA). Fourleaf is the first project to achieve Final EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) Certification. The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, created EDGE and worked with the GBCSA to tailor the tool for the South African environment. EDGE is a software, standard and green building certification system. Compared to the Base Case used in the EDGE online application, the development will be up to 29% more energy efficient, up to 25% more water efficient and boasts up to 43% reduction in embodied energy, resulting in utility bill savings of around R1 280 per unit if operated the way intended. For Similan, the developers behind Fourleaf Estate, developing in a sustainable manner while creating more opportunities for South Africans to own homes, is key. “Although not easy, our philosophy around sustainable development is simple. If we want to offer buyers an affordable investment, we should develop in ways that will save them costs,” said development manager Pieter du Toit. According to Du Toit, the EDGE certificate fueled their sustainable development philosophy, being able to give status to what they were already focusing on. Similan is one of a few development groups in SA who currently looks at the entire property life cycle for the affordable housing market, being involved from development phase to tenant and property management. Their experience and deep understanding of this market enabled them to not only challenge the status quo of affordable housing in terms of design, but also achieve EDGE certification. Fourleaf Estate is funded by the Housing Impact Fund of South Africa (HIFSA), managed by

Phase 2 of the estate is currently under construction and available to rent or buy. Once completed around 300 families will call Fourleaf Estate their home. Fourleaf Estate delivers significant energy savings to its residents through such practical solutions as heat pumps for hot water, low-flow taps (which reduce hot water consumption through aeration), and the installation of waterefficient fittings such as low-flow showerheads and dual-flush toilets. Reduced window-to-wall ratios and roof insulation ensure optimal energy efficiency.

Lions enjoy newfound freedom at sanctuary REPORTER TWO lions have recently started a new phase in their lives at the Born Free sanctuary at Shamwari Game Reserve. Nelson was rescued from a French zoo in April 2015 when it fell into liquidation and Ciam made international headlines in November 2015 when he was confiscated from a cramped cage in a garden in Southern France. An increasing number of wild animals are kept as exotic pets, including reptiles, amphibians, mammals, primates and big cats. The demand for these animals fuels both the legal and illegal wildlife trade. Born Free has been campaigning to prevent

captive animal suffering and phase out zoos since its formation in 1984. This year, they have gone back to their roots with a focus on challenging the exploitation of wild animals in captivity and the multibillion pound global zoo industry through it’s Beyond the Bars campaign. Nelson and Ciam started their journey on May 4 when they travelled from their temporary home at the Natuurhulpcentrum rescue centre in Belgium and arrived at Shamwari Game Reserve on May 6. Born Free Foundation’s co-founder and actress, Virginia McKenna OBE, was with them every step of the way on their more than 10 000km journey and watched with delight as Nelson and Ciam explored their new surroundings.

“Seeing them take their first steps into their huge natural enclosures was utterly joyful. At last they are free to live where lions belong and will be treated with the care and respect they deserve. How lucky I was to be there to share the moment,” McKenna said. Comedian Jim Moir and his wife, Nancy Sorrell, two Born Free Celebrity Patrons, helped prepare Nelson and Ciam for their journey and have been following their progress closely. They said, “It was wonderful to meet the magnificent Nelson and Ciam at Natuurhulpcentrum and to help the Born Free team prepare them for their journey to Shamwari Game Reserve. Nelson and Ciam highlight the plight of captive wild animals worldwide that are still kept in zoos and circuses or as ‘exotic pets’ just

for the entertainment of humans. “We are so happy to hear they are settling into their new homes and know they will be in the best of hands.” Nelson is now living at Born Free’s Julie Ward Animal Rescue and Education Centre, while Ciam’s new home is at the Jean Byrd Centre. Joe Cloete, Group General Manager at Shamwari Game Reserve, said, “We, here at Shamwari Game Reserve, are very proud to continue our close working relationship with Born Free, which now marks 20 years, and to be a part of not only supporting this great work, but also raising awareness of the plight of many big cats worldwide.” For more info or to donate to the cause go to www.bornfree.org.uk.

Next instalment of ‘Baby Mama Drama’ coming to PE REPORTER POPULAR South African comedian, Sifiso Nene, will bring part two of his outrageously successful show, Baby Mama Drama, to Port Elizabeth this month. The comedian, who was the first winner of So You Think You are Funny in 2009, packed out venues across the country with the show which was his first one-man production during 2016. Now, it is

Lucy Kruger, The Lost Boys to launch new album

time for the next instalment which, like the first, is set to have audiences rolling on the floor with laughter. He will take to the stage at the Boardwalk Amphitheatre with Baby Mama Drama 2 on May 26. As the titles suggests, the show puts a humorous twist on parenting issues and unpacks the well-known yet seldom addressed causes of why baby mamas and daddies behave the way they do. Since winning So You Think You are Funny, he has won several other awards including the Satmas for the Best Indigenous Comedian, as well as two Comics Choice Awards which the audience voted for. In addition to travelling the country and making people laugh, he has also made a few television appearances and acted in David Kau’s comedy film, Taxi Ride, in 2012. Tickets are available at R150 from Computicket.

Lucy Kruger and The Lost Boys will be launching their new album, Summer’s Not That Simple, at Shag High Voltage Hair in South End on May 23. The album’s sound drifts between the bareness of the acoustic guitar and the darker, psychedelic approach of the band. The performance will take place from 7:30pm to 10pm. Tickets at R70 per person are available at www.nutickets.co.za. PHOTO:CALVIN SIDERFIN

ADVERTORIAL: THE CO-OP MICA

Calling all DIY Dads: It is your time to shine WITH Mother’s Day behind us and Father’s Day already looming on the horizon, the focus has now shifted to dads. Father’s Day is celebrated to recognise the contribution that fathers and father figures make in the lives of their children. It doesn’t hurt that presents usually form part of the celebrations. Generally, when one thinks of a man and the kind of gift he would appreciate, various tools immediately come to mind. That is why the Co-op Mica is the place to go for DIY Dads. They stock everything you might need for your next DIY project in one convenient location. There are many reasons to do certain

things yourself around the house or office: you save time and money and it is the perfect time to bond with your children. With your children underfoot, you have someone who can do all the easy, time-consuming jobs like painting and you can train them to do the less appealing items on what often feels like a never-ending to-do list. DIY is a great way to upgrade an item, redesign a room or just as an outlet for pent-up emotions. Most of the time, you don’t even need to do much. A few small changes can make a big difference in the look and feel of something. You don’t need a lot of experience either. The right kind of tools will do most of the work for you.

The Co-op Mica offers a wide range of equipment for DIY work, from smaller item like nails and fasteners to larger power tools. F-type sash clamps are handy for holding woodwork articles together in gluing stages, especially when you are a another pair of hands short. The Ryobi Sabre Saw XRS-18 is ideal when you want to cut wood, metal or even meat in the processing stage during hunting season. When you feel like doing work that is a bit more detailed, the Ryobi Sliding Compound Mitre Saw CSS-1800 can be used for finer woodworking such as cutting picture frames at the request of your better half or making bigger furniture for the man cave.

Just remember to always take safety precautions when working with power tools, whether you are a pro at it or not. Just think, by the time your project is finished, you will have crossed something off the hated to-do list, probably learnt something new in the process and your better half will be in love with you all over again. The scraped knuckles and sore muscles will definitely be worth it. So, get your list, your kids and your tools and get started on your next project. Haas Das learners no longer fear the dentist REPORTER IN an effort to dispel a fear of dentists in young children, oral hygienist Moefiedah Hippolyte of the Dora Nginza Dental Clinic, invited the Grade R learners from ACVV Haas Das Pre-Primary School in Algoa Park to visit the clinic for an educational outing.

Hippolyte visits Haas Das on a yearly basis during the school’s Teeth Week and has noticed a general fear of dentists in the learners. The educational outing was aimed at dispelling this fear and allowing learners to feel comfortable when having to visit a dentist. The children could view all the apparatus

used and watch how teeth are cleaned and polished. Children who wanted to could sit in the chair for a turn and were kept actively involved by interactive questions from Hippolyte and other learners. The outing proved to be a great success as many of the learners left the dental clinic wanting to become a dentist one day.

Madibaz star jumps to new heights REPORTER BESTMED NMMU-Madibaz high jump star, Garth Ellis, ticked yet another box when he took a silver medal at the recent USSA Championships in Cape Town. “My plan going into the season was to break the Varsity Athletics record and to medal at both the SA senior and USSA champs,” said the human movement sciences student after his jump of 2.10m. Ellis started the season off in fine form when he jumped 2.05m to bag gold at the first Varsity Athletics meeting in early March. The lanky Madibaz athlete secured another gold when he cleared 2.12m – bettering the record by a centimetre – at the second meeting of the series a few weeks later. He went even higher last month when he equalled his personal best of 2.15m at the national champs in Potchefstroom – an achievement that secured him the bronze medal. “Now that I’ve equalled my personal best I’m hoping to improve on it in the next few Bestmed NMMUMadibaz high jumper, Garth Ellis, has been ticking the boxes during the current athletics season. competitions,” said Ellis, who hails from Holland Park in Port Elizabeth. I’ve put a lot of effort into achieving all of this, so it’s a nice feeling to have accomplished everything I wanted to this season. “At the end of the day it’s all worth it because it shows that my training is paying off.” Despite having had little to no formal coaching, Ellis said he had taken advice from a number of coaches to improve his technique. He said working with his sprint coach, Gerrie Posthumus, had been especially helpful. “I’ve been doing high jump since I was in grade eight at Andrew Rabie High, but there are no specialist coaches in the Eastern Cape so I’ve mostly had to coach myself. I’ve done a lot of research and also made sure to listen to pointers from other athletes and coaches when I’ve taken part in meetings.” Ellis, who dreams of winning the national and USSA championships, said his next goal was to compete at the World Student Games in Taipei in August. “I need to find an extra five centimetres to qualify,” he said. “Although my ultimate goal is to one day make the Olympic team, I also have to focus on the smaller goals like jumping 2.20m.”

Early last year I was shocked when I saw my old friend driving an expensive car, he took me home, on our way home I ask him what had changed his life in such short time. He told me his secret. He gave me a magazine with an article about Mama Sheena. I never hesitated. I contacted her and she explained to me things like: Shortboys to put money in account, Magic Ring to win money games and luck, Magic Wallet to multiply money. She also has Rats to put money in the house on the same day. She explained to me and I chose Shortboys. I followed the instructions, next thing I saw a large amount of money in my account. She asked me to withdraw her 10% and I was very excited the money was real. And I told my sister about her and she phoned her for RATS. Now she is living a happy life. She has a Tavern business. Thanks Mama Sheena for changing our lives. From then she never contacted us and she also helps with: Lost Lover, Delete Loans, Divorce, Finish unfinished jobs by other healers. Call or whatsapp now:

Valencia draws with Tigers in MOFA Premier League game SELBY MADIKANE FANS were kept on their feet when Valencia were led to a 1-1 draw with the on-form Young Tigers in their enthralling Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Premier League game that took place at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday.

The game produced sparks right from the start. Both sides came to the game well-prepared, but fans saw the first half ending in a deadlock. Valencia opened the score sheet after Reboleke Cheke scored a beautiful goal that put his side 1-0 ahead. Valencia fans were ecstatic until Tigers equalised with a top notch goal thanks to Andile Ace Biko. With just a few seconds left, Tigers could have wrapped up the game, but their seasoned striker, Sithembiso Brack Doda, delivered a powerful shot that was collected by Valencia goalkeeper Vuyisa Magaqa with ease. Magaqa was the man of the match since he saved his side. In another game, Tomorrow Stars played to

a 1-1 draw against SUBS in the game that stole the show. Stars scored their goal from the penalty spot through Sithembile Gobodo, while Xolelani Mkiva scored a goal for SUBS in the last minutes of the game. SUBS could have collected the three maximum points, but striker Athenkosi Mpati’s effort was saved by Stars’ goalkeeper Ntobeko Sikani, who was at the top of his game. Manchester United also defeated Young Romans 4-3 in their enthralling encounter. Anele Matshaya scored a brace from a penalty spot and Nkululeko Mkhonza Oyisis also scored a brace for United. Romans’ goals were scored by Sibusiso Mnto from a penalty mark, Mandilakhe George and another penalty kick by Lunga Njenje. Mrwebi, Goniwe help Attackers beat Winners MTHUNZI Mrwebi and Ncedisa Goniwe helped Eleven Attackers beat Winners 4-1 in their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay Masters Association League game that was played at Motherwell NU 13 Grounds on Sunday. Attackers clearly showed their intention to settle for nothing less than a win. The Motherwell side registered their first goal courtesy of Mrwebi. Attackers did, however, not give the Zwide side any chances to breathe. The scoreline increased to 2-0 after Goniwe banged in the second goal for Attackers. Winners came up strongly with Nkosana Gaza Ndondo scoring his side’s consolation goal in the last minute of the first half. Mrwebi scored his second goal early in the second half. Goniwe was also rewarded with his second goal that sealed the game at 4-1. Midfielder Thembelani Kimsho Kondlo was very effective for Attackers throughout the entire game. The game was one-sided and Attackers’ strikers did not miss many opportunities. In another game, Young Pirates outclassed Villagers 3-1 with Malibongwe Dickson scoring an odd goal and Ntsikelelo Mdepa coming up with a brace for Young Pirates. Kagiso Madida Lebuso scored Villagers’

Opel gives its Mokka the X factor

Exterior: Compact, sporty and athletic, yet stylish are among the words that spring to mind when having to describe the exterior look. Most eye-catching are the bold scuff plates, which will help you to take this vehicle off the tar road with more peace of mind. Adding to the sporty look is the black roof rails, bulky front design and privacy glass of the back passenger and rear windows. Interior The stylish look on the outside is continued on the inside with stitched leather,

OPEL has given its Mokka range a bit of a nip and tuck and added an X to its name. The X is the new global identifier for future Opel SUV and crossover vehicles. The most significant exterior change in the Mokka X is the new headlight clusters, now with sports LED daytime running lights. There are four models in the range starting with the Enjoy and moving up to the higher spec Cosmo. While both spec levels are available with manual and automatic transmissions, they are all powered by the same engine, the 103 kW 1.4 litre turbocharged ECOTEC petrol engine, which produces 103 kW between 4 900 and 6 000 rpm and 200 Nm between 1 850 and 4 900 rpm. Zero to 100 km/h is reached in 9.8 seconds with a top speed of 196 km/h for the 6-speed manual models. For the two models equipped with the 6-speed automatic transmission, the 0-100 km/h sprint is achieved in 10.7 seconds and they carry a top speed of 191 km/h. The test model was the high-spec Cosmo model with manual transmission.

and smartphone. The back passengers will also be able to ride in spacious comfort with seat pockets, a fold-down centre armrest with two cupholders and their own 12V plug. The boot is a very decent size for a family vehicle and its flat loadbed, which is flush with the lid opening, makes it easy to load cargo. During my time with it, I had to cart around several boxes and the easy to fold down seats made the job so much easier. It folds in a 60/40 split. In addition, the boot also offers handy stowage spaces for smaller items. Ride It likes to be moved quickly from first to second gear, but after that it’s not very demanding. It offers a zippy ride, great handling and enough power for confident overtaking. The Mokka X feels surprisingly sturdy on the road despite its height. The high seating position will certainly find favour with most lady drivers. Out on the freeway its engine proved to be very willing – and getting to 120km per hour was done without much effort. The average fuel consumption achieved during the test drive, which was mostly on the peak hour traffic urban commute, was given by the trip computer as 8.3 litres per 100km. Opel states the average fuel economy on the new Mokka X 1.4T Enjoy manual as 5.9-litres per 100 km and 6.2 litres per 100km for the Mokka X 1.4T Enjoy automatic on the combined cycle. For the Mokka X 1.4T Cosmo manual, the fuel consumption is stated as 6.0-litres per 100 km, while the Mokka X 1.4T Cosmo automatic returns a combined cycle average figure of 6.5-litres per 100 km.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

Hamilton fights for Spanish win FOR 88 percent of the time all races around the Circuit de Catalunya have been won from pole position. While this stat was reaffirmed in 2017 by pole sitter Lewis Hamilton, his victory was not nearly as straightforward as that. Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes were made to work hard for all of the 66 laps of the Spanish Grand Prix. A clever switch on tyre strategy, which had the Brit on the quicker tyre at the end of the race, provided the opportunity for victory, which Hamilton translated into the 55th win of his career. The Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel dominated the first half of the Grand Prix, but a combination of Valtteri Bottas serving as a blocker for Hamilton and a slow call on strategy, cost him the top step of the podium. Ultimately the pair finished less than four seconds apart. It was, however, not nearly as satisfying an afternoon for their teammates. Kimi Raikkonen retired on lap one with a broken steering arm following a clash in turn one between Bottas, Raikkonen and Verstappen. The incident, that also brought Verstappen’s race to an end, was, rightly, deemed to be a racing incident. Later in the race Bottas’ Mercedes engine expired putting him out of the race. Though no fault of their own, Raikkonen and Bottas’ retirements could be significant. It could begin the process of Ferrari and Mercedes needing to discuss which driver to back in the fight for championship. In a battle that appears as if it is going to be close, there isn’t much more time before this call will need to be made. The retirements meant that Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo finished third, but it was

a day that the Austrian team will want to forget as soon as possible. The expectation that Red Bull’s highly anticipated upgrade package would push them towards the two front-running teams was emphatically crushed by the fact that Ricciardo finished some 75 seconds adrift. This margin is especially worrying considering that the Spanish circuit is predominantly focused on aerodynamics. Nevertheless, the characteristics of the next Grand Prix in Monaco should alleviate their pain somewhat. But it’s still unlikely that they’ll trouble Ferrari or Mercedes should all things be equal. Force India continued their impressive run with yet another double points finish. Sergio Perez in fourth and Esteban Ocon in fifth underlined what a stellar job this privateer team is doing with, likely, a quarter of the budget of the bigwigs. Renault too is continuing to make progress as Nico Hulkenberg finished sixth overall. Spanish driver Carlos Sainz finished seventh in front of his home crowd in the Toro Rosso while Pascal Wehrlein upped his stock in Formula 1 with a fine eighth place finish in a Sauber which has been difficult to drive this year. Sauber’s point scored now means that McLaren is the only team with zero points on the board. Dannil Kvyat came from twentieth on the grid to finish ninth, while Romain Grosjean snapped up the final point in tenth for Haas. Performance-wise it was a better weekend for McLaren but Fernando Alonso could still only manage twelfth place by the chequered flag. Notably nearly all the drivers remarked on the physicality of the race and how they were on the limit for all of the 66 laps. This is in stark contrast to last year where drivers were cruising around five to six sec-

onds off the pace in order to conserve their tyres. A tip of the hat then to the FOM, FIA, and Pirelli for doing their bit to provide a more intense experience for drivers and spectators alike. One of the most fascinating developments to emerge from the weekend is that despite the fact that tens of millions of rands have been spent on upgrade packages and countless man-hours invested, the battle between Mercedes and Ferrari appear to be as close as ever. For fans it couldn’t be better news as it means an enthralling season is on the cards.

FRANCOIS ROTHNER KUYGA Masters kicked off the Port Elizabeth Legends Football Association (PELFA) League with a solid 6-0 win against Priory. At Victoria Park Sports Club, PE City and Hearts took each other on. It was a very close match that went to the 88th minute of the game before Travis La Mude found the back of the net to give Hearts a hard-fought 1-0 win. In Central, NMB Municipality kicked their 2017 season off with a loss after being beaten 1-3 by visiting African Leopards. Two games also took place in the Londt Park area. Callies managed to get the better of the tenacious Old Grey side by winning 2-0. About 15 minutes into the first half, Ryan Bailey kicked a superb cross into Old Grey’s Penalty area, forcing a goal. This put the half-time score at 1-0 in favour of Callies. Twenty minutes into the second half, Ryan Bailey scored a great goal making the final score 2-0 in favour of the home team. Next door at Londt Park Sports Club, Westpark and Shamrocks fought in a heated battle. Shamrocks broke the ice when they scored from a cross from a free kick in the 21st minute of the first

half. Shamrocks went further ahead in the second half, netting their second goal. Westpark tried hard and eventually managed to get a goal by Gary Juru five minutes before the final whistle. Tonight, May 17, will see Hearts facing Westpark at The Oval. At Old Grey Sports Club Old Grey will be looking to get onto the winning path when they play against NMB Municipality. A win for Old Grey is predicted here. African Leopards will tackle PE City out of Victoria Park’s way where Leopards will probably get the better of City. Kuyga Masters will host Callies at Kuyga Community Centre. Based on the previous week’s results this will be a close affair. Shamrocks will also face Priory at NMMU South. Priory have some solid players in their squad and they should manage to win this one. Fixtures for tonight, May 17: Hearts vs Westpark at The Oval at 7pm Old Grey vs NMBM at OGSC at 7pm African Leopards vs PE City at VPSC 7pm Kuyga Masters vs Callies at Kuyga Community Centre at 7:30pm Shamrocks vs Priory at NMMU South at 7:30pm
