EVENT TO BE TELEVISED INTERNATIONALLY

World sailing champs in Bay REPORTER

AILORS from all over the world will add colour to the Bay’s horizon when the 60th SAP 505 World Championships are held here from March 23 to April 3.

The event, which is hosted by the Algoa Bay Yacht Club (ABYC) will include the South African Championships incorporating the Preworld and World Championships.

According to ABYC member Alan Straton, world class sailors from Denmark, Great Brit-

ain, South Africa, United States, Australia and Germany will be participating.

Straton said this exciting event will set the city in the global map of water sports as it will be televised internationally which means a huge boost for tourism.

“The amount of exposure the city will receive from this event will be phenomenal. We have hosted similar regattas in the past but none this big with such an international following. People from all around the world will have their eyes set on this city which is fantastic for water sports and the Metro,” said Straton.

The International 505 is a one-design high-per-

formance two-person monohull planning centreboard dinghy, with spinnaker, using a trapeze for the crew.

“While it is a high-performance boat and demanding in a blow, the 505 is an extraordinarily well-handling craft and is easier to control than many smaller trapeze boats. The 505 is named for its length, 5.05 meters (16.5 feet),” said Straton.

He added that during the 60th SAP 505 World Championships, the public will have limited day time access to the Algoa Bay Yacht Club and Chartroom Restaurant and prior bookings are essential.

“It’s fantastic to see Port Elizabeth hosting another international water sport event and we applaud all those responsible for securing the 505 World Championships for our city this year.

“It’s no secret that Port Elizabeth has some of the best water sport facilities and beaches in the country and with the support of both corporate sponsors and municipal departments it’s only a matter of time before we see the hosting of regular annual international sports events in this city,” said Mike Zoetmulder, managing director of non-profit events company Zsports.

Die TPAG is tans gewikkel in ’n regsaksie teen Transnet oor die lae pensioene.

Die gesamentlike bonusbedrag vir Transnet-pensioentrekkers beloop R170 miljoen, het Anoj Singh, finansiële hoof van Transnet, vroeër in ’n eksklusiewe onderhoud met Netwerk24 bevestig.

Deon Scheepers, Transnet-pensioenaris van die Baai, het gesê die bonus is baie welkom, “maar dit vervang glad nie die aanpassing waarvoor ons gevra het nie,” het hy beklemtoon.

Alex High to raise funds for Jonathan ALEXANDER Road High will be hosting a Rock ’n Roll evening with a portion of the proceeds going towards a learner who is fighting leukaemia.

This “fun”-raising event will star staff band, Caps Off, with some of the proceeds going towards the Jo-Jo Fund.

The Jo-Jo Fund was created earlier this year after 14-year-old Alexan, Jonathan Ungerer, was diagnosed with Leukaemia. Jonathan is currently receiving treatment at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town and will be receiving treatment for the next few months.

The Rock ’n Roll evening will be running for two evenings on March 20 and March 21.

Tickets are available from the school bursar at R130 per couple or R70 per person. Tables seat 10 people.

THE Northern Arts Festival (NAF), now in its eighth year, is taking place from March 20 to 22 this year instead of its usual date - the weekend of September 24 which coincided with Heritage Day celebrations.

NAF, the brainchild of Billy Paulson, did not take place last year because another big event, the Motherwell Festival, was taking place at the same time.

“We decided to move the NAF to March so as to not clash with the other festival. We as the organisers couldn’t take the financial risk of having two huge festivals in the city at the same time,” explained Paulson, NAF director.

For the first time the NAF, with has the theme Duidelik Kleurvol, will feature international artists such as Grammy award-winning nominee Fletch Wiley, and child prodigy drummer Bill Maxwell.

The NAF also had to make a last-minute change to the scheduled venue last week. The festival was meant to be held free to the public at Varsvlei, which is an open field in West End. However, the venue is currently waterlogged due to an underground spring - making it unsuitable for the event.

“The festival has thus been moved to the Marock Road sports ground in Marock Road, West End. This sports ground is an enclosed venue and for the purpose of crowd control and public safety the organizers are compelled to charge a gate fee of R10 per person to limit numbers,” said Wendy Adonis, one of the organisers.

Today, Jacques and Wendy Engelbrecht, owners of Quality Demand Management (QDM) are not only the owners of a house known as the Green House of Greenshields Park who haven’t had to pay the municipality for electricity in over 2 years, but their business also helps other consumers to save on their electricity bill.

Their efforts have also led them to be nominated for the prestige eta awards in the category for energy saving in a household.

According to Wendy, when they started the business, they only supplied and installed occupancy lighting and sensors to control lighting and air-conditioning. “This alone can save office areas up to 60% of their total bill. We always knew how much we saved the big corporates by doing just this, but when we saw how much we saved in our own home by doing the same, the bug bit and we

Wendy estimates that they will have paid for their system with the saving in electricity costs in another 4 to 5 years’ time.

“Our home currently runs off a hybrid system, which is the best of both worlds. As Port Elizabeth was the first Metro to allow their customers to feed their excess energy into the grid, we took advantage of this to further reduce our costs.

“Having grid tie allows us to ‘store’ electricity on the grid for one calendar month, thus reducing the need for a large battery back-up system.

This also reduces the maintenance cost,” she said.

According to Wendy, having a solar geyser installed is the first step to take as water heating is by far the biggest user of energy in the home.

“For people who are looking at a temporary solution to see them through load shedding and often cannot afford to go the full route, there are a number of smaller solutions, such as installing a 1kW UPS system that can just see to their immediate needs such as a TV, a few lights, the alarm system, etc.,” said Wendy.

According to Wendy even in times when there are fewer sunny days, one can rely on solar power alone as technology has advanced so much that some solar panels get energy from heat alone.

Eskom denies endorsing Gimme Power CC ‘s electricity consumption reduction products ESKOM is warning the public against Gimme Power CC which claims they are in partnership with Eskom to sell a product which reduces electricity consumption.

Eskom said the company is selling, among others, a product termed “electric buddy” which is purportedly approved by Eskom as being energy efficient.

Eskom said at no stage did they endorse Gimme Power as a company working in part-

Old actors never die ­ they just lose the plot PEMADS is proud to present the Bitou Amateur Theatrical Society (BATS) production of Old actors never die – They just lose the plot!

This hilarious British Farce by Lynn Brittney is directed by well-known former TV personality, David Hall-Green. David was also an actor in British Repertory Theatre for 12 years before joining the SABC and PE audiences will be thoroughly entertained by his performance as Roger in this production.

After two very successful productions in Plettenberg Bay, the BATS jumped at the opportunity to tour to Port Elizabeth.

In this production, they find themselves in Mount House, a genteel “home for retired theatricals,” where old actors and actresses continue their lives of high drama, although their theatrical careers are long gone.

Edmund, former well-known actor (and philanderer), arrives to find that his three ex-

wives have become close friends and share a rather uncomfortable interest in him.

Danny is a pathetic widower who, in his heyday, was famous as the “Master of the Universe”, while Walter was, rather surprisingly, known for his macho military roles.

Further high jinks are provided by members of the Russian Mafia who are out to “get” Edmund. With all the established high jinx of true farce, this promises to be a Pemads hit.

This Plettenberg Bay-based dramatic society will be hosted at The Little Theatre and performances will be held at 7:30pm on Friday, March 27, and Saturday, March 28, with matinee productions at 2:30pm on Saturday, March 28 and Sunday, March 29.

Neon Run 2015 coming to PE in April GET ready for neon-lights, chart-topping musos and electrifying DJs in a not-to-be-missed mix of sport and entertainment.

South Africa’s electric night-time spectacular has gone national with Neon Run 2015 taking place with five fun-filled festivals at major city centres.

Join thousands of runners, joggers and walkers decked out in all manner of glow and neon paraphernalia as they complete the course and manoeuvre through glow stations before celebrating at the post-race party with a dazzling laser light show.

The Port Elizabeth leg of the Neon Run will take place at St George’s Park on April 11.

Performing at the Neon Runs will be some of South Africa’s top musicians and DJs. 5FM’s Nick Hamman will serve as master of ceremonies for all five neon events with Cape Town based DJ Chris Taylor. Roger Goode will take to the stage in Port Elizabeth.

Also on the line-up for Port Elizabeth is explosive electro-swing act Goodluck.

Gates open at 3pm with music throughout the event while the race

starts at 6:30pm. A beer tent and food stalls are available.

The cost is R250 per person, under 11s play R90 while if four people or more book the price is R200 a person.

Every ticket includes entry into race, the music festival, glow sticks and an official Neon Run head band.

REPORTER THE Madibaz men’s and women’s basketball teams beat the universities of Fort Hare (UFH) and Rhodes to emerge undefeated after the first round of the Ussa Eastern Cape league qualifiers at NMMU’s Missionvale campus in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

In their opening fixtures the NMMU women claimed a 38-8 victory over the Rhodes women’s team, while the Madibaz men’s team left the Grahamstown side trailing 48-25.

In their second match the Madibaz women’s team dominated UFH 67-9, while their male counterparts did equally well to claim a 73-27 victory over the team from Alice.

“The NMMU teams were in a league of their own on Saturday.

They brushed Rhodes and Fort Hare aside with ease,” said Madibaz basketball manager Bernard Petersen.

“I think the winning margins speak for themselves in this case.”

NMMU women’s coach Andrew Thuo was equally impressed with the teams’ performances.

Local Seaman’s Renault group take top dealer awards REPORTER RENAULT George and Renault Port Elizabeth, owned by the Eastern Cape-based Seaman’s family, took second and third spots respectively in the highly contested annual Renault dealer awards event.

Renault Worcester took the title of Renault South Africa’s Dealer of the Year (DOTY) for the second consecutive year.

Founder of the family-owned and operated

Seaman’s Motor Group, Des Seaman, has been a Renault man for 40-plus years and is the brand’s longest serving dealer.

While he remains active in the business, his son, Craig Seaman, is dealer principal at Renault Port Elizabeth while son-in-law Stephen Kenny plays a dual role as dealer principal at the George and Knysna operations.

Overwhelmed with the news that George and PE operations had taken second and third spots respectively at the awards event, both Seaman and Kenny attribute much of their

success to Renault’s “fresh product line-up, in particular the Duster, Clio and Sandero models,” underpinned by “good pricing”.

Renault is South Africa’s fastest growing car brand and increased sales by 51.5% in an overall passenger car market during 2014.

“With our passenger car dealer channel market close to 5%, one in every 20 passenger vehicles sold during the course of last year was a Renault,” said Leslie Ramsoomar, vice president of sales and operations at Renault SA.

Congratulating Seaman’s Renault Port Elizabeth for taking the third spot in the country at the highly contested annual Renault dealer awards event are Wim van Schie (Vice President Quality and Service: Renault SA (Pty) Ltd), Craig Seaman (Dealer Principal of Seaman’s Port Elizabeth), Niall Lynch (Managing Director : Renault SA (Pty) Ltd) and Leslie Ramsoomar (Vice President Sales and Operations: Renault SA (Pty) Ltd).

THIS past weekend saw the end of Season 10 of the aQuellé Ocean Racing Series and the hosting of the Overall Series prize giving at News Café on Sunday morning.

At the prize giving, 7 individuals were honoured for having taken part in all 10 seasons of the Series which started in January 2006.

Mary-Anne Stott, Maria Stott, Colin McCall, Brenton Blignaut, Elsa Craig, Conal Turner and Paddy Cloete were all singled out for their achievement of 10 years of competition and awarded with a collectors top and a permanent Ocean Racing Series number. 69-year-old Elsa Craig also won a R3 000 Speedo wetsuit which was drawn from the above names.

The overall champions of the Series were announced on Sunday and these included Juan Slabbert and Milé Vermaak (5km Walk), Dylan Finlay and Megan Snyman (5km Run), Wayne Jones and Brigitte Muller (1km Swim), Daniel Jones and Kirsten Marriott (3km Swim).

In the popular Kids 1km Beach race, overall honours went to Aiden Joubert and Tayla Wilson (6/u), Jason Archibald and Abbie Mitchell (8/u), Matthew Loon and Zanri Black (10/ u), Tiaan Black and Kayla Ferreira (12/u). A full listing of overall standings is available on the Series website.

Adventure events season hits PE With Summer slowly coming to an official ending, it’s that time of year again for the popular, fun, family orientated adventure events season to start and first up will be SA’s most electric and glowing night event presented by Neon Run SA. The official South African Neon Run will be starting off their national tour in April and first up will be Port Elizabeth on Saturday 11th April (See story on page 17).

This is followed a week later by the Muck Run, presented by the Edge Financial Group and taking place out at Bushpig Adventures (near Lake Farm) on the weekend of April 1819 and promising to be another sell-out event.

On Friday 1st May is the SPAR Little Ladies Race over 2km. It takes place from Pollok Beach in the Summerstrand area and is open to all girls aged eight years and younger.

Participants may be accompanied by an adult woman but no boys or men will be allowed.

This is followed by SA’s most beautiful road race, the SPAR Women’s 10km and 5km race on Saturday 9th May at Pollok Beach.

Then on Sunday 17th May The Color Run returns to PE. Billed the ‘Happiest 5k on the Planet’, The Color Run is the largest 5k Series in the world.

Great matches – puzzling results APPLES and pears are just different fruit types, depending on your mood, the dictates of your taste buds at a particular moment.

While apples and pears are just fruit types, chalk and cheese suggest complete opposites – something dry and inedible on the one hand, something pleasantly tasting on the other. Improving as the game went on Chiefs eventually emerged worthy 28-19 winners but it was indeed invigorating – cheese of the highest quality. It kept your heart racing. It earned from former Springbok looseforward and national coach, Nick Mallett, the highest of accolades. “It’s the best rugby I’ve seen at this level in ages,” he opined.

“The energy on attack and defence was remarkable. Of course for South African fans it was disappointing not to get a win.”

earlier, seemed bent on taking that route from the opening whistle.

It could be argued that, after only one win in four outings, the Sharks above all else were determined to produce a positive result and not, by a long shot, the sort of team the Cheetahs had faced in the first round.

Time will tell. Good things to take out of the clash from a national perspective were the likes of JP Pietersen and Frans Steyn as a midfield pairing.

Perhaps Jean de Villiers should be encouraged now to retire, though he could still be useful as a mentor at the World Cup later in the year. Man of the match, Marcell Coetzee, with almost three tries – the last was controversially disallowed – improves with every outing. What a pair he and Vermeulen will be in the loose, with Ryan Kankowski perhaps completing the trio.

As the tough Super Rugby tournament continues perhaps one of our teams will surprise us yet.

East London wins nipper championships REPORTER A VERY successful Eastern Cape Nipper Lifesaving Championships 2015, which were hosted by Kings Beach Surf Lifesaving Club, were held this past weekend.

According to Andrew Marriott, media officer for Lifesaving Eastern Cape, the surf conditions on the day were very challenging, especially for the u9 and u10 competitors, but they completed all their events.

The organisers thanked the dedicated club administrators, coaches and parents who

made the event possible.

“The Nipper movement is one of the more successful youth development organisations in the country. Nippers are taught vital life skills, surf safety, general first aid and fitness together with gamesmanship. The Nipper movement is the nursery of the voluntary surf lifeguard movement,” said Marriott.

The event had the following results:

1st place: East London (1000.5 points) 2nd place: Kings Beach (965 points) 3rd place: Summerstrand (503.5 points) 4th place: Bluewater Bay (134 points) 5th place: Hobie (64 points)

Stock car racing at PE Oval Track Raceway PE Oval Track Raceway on Mission Road at Green­ bushes will host their next club race on Saturday, March 28. Racing starts at 6pm. Classes participating are: Beginners; 1660; 2.1; Hotrods; Super 6; Std V8s and V8 American Saloons.

Entrance for adults cost R50 and children younger than16 cost R20. Parking is free around the track.

It is widely understood that it is necessary for athletes to be at their peak to participate in the event. Even if an athlete isn’t in top form, their training programme for the Ironman can assist in improving their health and physique and also mental well-being.

The event hosts many participants who never thought they would one day participate in, or complete, an Ironman. Some participants challenged themselves to improve their lifestyle, lose weight and take control of their health.

One such athlete is Dawid Mouton, 28, from Theresa Park in Pretoria. He says that participating in the Ironman changed his life. “It got me to stop smoking and drinking excessively. I also lost 25kg.”

Ross Lutsch, 32, from Arcadia in Pretoria admits to enjoying life on the couch before participating in Ironman. He aims to complete the race in a “reasonably good time”, and his personal victory lies in losing a third of his body weight in a little more than a year.

Luvuyo Bangazi, 38, of Lovemore Heights in Port Elizabeth tipped the scales at 117kg.

In 2013 he volunteered at the Ironman South Africa bike check-in/check-out station. He says, “from then on, I was fascinated with the sport and the enduring spirit of the athletes.
