Speaking at the launch, Executive Mayor Athol Trollip admitted that phase one of the campaign had not been as successful as it should have been. “We have learnt our lessons. “Through phase one it has become clear to us that cleaning the

Metro: Bucket toilets to be gone by December REPORTER IN the build-up to last year’s election on August 3, the then DA mayoral candidate, Athol Trollip, and now the Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, was very vocal about his determination to rid the metro of bucket toilets. He involved the Human Rights Commission to underscore his revulsion at the indignity of these toilets, the use of which was at that stage imposed on approximately 16 000 metro residents. has been hard at work to ensure that every last bucket will disappear from our landscape by the end of December this year. “This was an election promise, it cannot be left at the ballot box. It is a commitment made out of caring and determination to govern well and deliver services for all. We are very serious about seeing it through,” Lovemore said. “Already, we have removed more than 4 000 buckets, mostly through the relocation of residents to their homes or the sites of their future homes. In both scenarios, full flush toilets have been provided.” Lovemore added that for those communities that will not be relocated or housed soon, the wait for housing must be a dignified one. “Numerous sanitation options were proposed to residents

through rigorous public participation processes. It was decided that a communal sanitation solution would be rolled out for those still waiting for homes. “The first of these successfully trialled facilities will be launched soon. Each will feature flush toilets, showers and wash basins. Each will be well lit for safety and well managed by community members to ensure hygienic conditions, and importantly jobs.” Lovemore said that although there had been resistance from some communities, every bucket would be removed by the end of December. “Where there have been delays, the roll-out of communal sanitation has been scheduled for early 2018, with the immediate installation of chemical toilets as an interim measure,” she said.

New technology to improve residents’ safety REPORTER

This first-of-a-kind project is spearheaded by Fidelity ADT and these cameras have been proven to improve the safety and security significantly of a suburb in pilot areas across the country. LPR cameras also utilise smart analytics technology that intelligently collects and analyses data in the background. The system actively learns its environment to determine what is normal and abnormal behaviour for an area. All of this takes place without human intervention. When a camera detects unusual activity, it immediately alerts the control room operator in the PE Community Information Centre (CIC), who can dispatch police, armed response officers or other emergency services within seconds. LPR technology also records licence plates in order to track a vehicle’s movements in and out of areas. This licence plate is then matched to the SAPS national database to determine if the vehicle is stolen or wanted in a registered crime. Ward 8 Councillor Gustav Rautenbach lauded the project and said the municipality is taking hands with all the roleplayers, including the private sector, to combat crime. Ryan Britz, branch manager for Fidelity ADT’s PE Operation, said, “This technology enables Fidelity ADT to work faster and more efficiently to assist crime deterrence and actively manage crime in an area.” Britz added that Fidelity ADT appeals to the community to be actively involved in helping themselves and their communities. “By supporting the LPR initiative and roll out, we can grow the network of LPR cameras across our footprint and further track and safeguard other communities. “It is only through the community’s buy-in that we can work together to eradicate crime,” he said.

Jehovah’s Witnesses to host annual convention REPORTER PORT Elizabeth-based Jehovah’s Witnesses will be among the anticipated 8 000 delegates attending the three-day annual convention which will be held between Friday and Sunday this week, starting at 9:20am each day, under the theme “Don’t Give Up!” The programme will be held at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, as well as at selected venues around the world. In South Africa, a total turnout of around 220 000 is expected at 70 conventions to be presented in 20 languages. Junior cooks do the rounds in kitchen REPORTER ASPIRING chefs from across the Eastern Cape gathered for some serious fun and exciting cooking at the SPAR Junior Cook competition, which took place at the Pastryworks Cooking School in Port Elizabeth recently. The five finalists were required to come prepared with one recipe of their choice for the first round while being given a mystery dish to concoct in the second. A tantalising aroma wafted through the kitchen as Larnay Badenhorst of Rowallan Park Primary School, Somangaye Mtywaru of Victoria Park Primary School, Jessica Brown of Woodridge Preparatory School, JD Duvenhage of Cradock Primary School and Eben van Huyssteen battled it out. Judge Sacha van der Walt, a lecturer and chef at the cooking school, said he was blown away by the skills of the youngsters. “This is the first year I’ve judged this competition and the level absolutely blew me away. I wasn’t expecting to see what I saw.” He said the competition, aimed at

Grade 5 to 7 learners, had showcased some great talent. “A lot of them have a great future and there are certainly a few I hope to see studying under me in this school.” The first round saw a variety of dishes plated up, after which the young cooks’ baking skills were put to the ultimate test with the mystery dish – ginger cookies. The St Francis Bay local, who cooked spaghetti and meatballs in the opening round, said she had spent hours practising in her mom’s kitchen. “We’ve been eating meatballs for weeks,” her mother, Jo Brown, testified. Having successfully executed her first dish, she turned her attention to the flavourful cookies, which were a first for her. “I’ve never cooked ginger biscuits before, but I was excited about the mystery dish because I love baking.” SPAR Eastern Cape’s sponsorships and events manager Alan Stapleton said the cook-off was exceptionally close, where the finalists were separated by a handful of points. “The judges were all amazed that the kids, working from a blind recipe in the second round, just jumped in and could do it so well.” Stapleton said the competition, now in its sixth year, was one that aligned with SPAR Eastern Cape’s values. “SPAR and food are synonymous. “Through food and cooking, we are able to bring families, fun and happiness together.”

REPORTER FIVE remarkable women will bring Sue-Pam Grant’s Curl Up & Dye to life when they take to the stage at the PE Opera House from today until Saturday. It’s a bitter, biting and funny play set in a hairdressing salon, where the audience bears witness to the inevitable power games that are played. It highlights the fact that the world is hard and cheap to hold onto, but it is also a world inhabited by five women who will have spectators laughing and crying with them. Curl Up & Dye forms part of The Opera House’s Drama Sea-

sons which stages productions that are produced largely by local experts every month for a week. Curl Up & Dye is directed by Marlene Pieterse and stars Emily Bradley, Nobesuthu Rayi, Anneke Groenewald, Danielle Koning and Olwethu Mdala. NMB biathle, triathle athletes shine in Spain REPORTER TWELVE athletes from the Nelson Mandela Bay represented South Africa in Spain at the Biathle and Triathle World Champs recently. The South African team was undeniably one of the strongest teams at the competition winning 42 gold medals over the course of the four-day competition.

The NMB athletes formed an integral part of the South African team and all the athletes did themselves proud. First up was Keira van Heerden winning the bronze medal in the girls u/11 category. Keira also formed part of the gold-winning team. Triathle, a continuous shoot-swimrun event, is a tough sport that requires both mental and physical strength. The top performance by an NMB athlete in triathle belonged to Ruan le Roux who won the u/13 boys category to be crowned the Triathle u/13 World Champion. Ruan was in one of the few age groups with heats. After winning his heat, Ruan continued with a remarkable performance in the finals. Other top 10 performances from the NMB athletes included Maroney Jacobs (seventh in girls u/10 category), Ludgen le Roux (seventh in boys

u/11 category), Daniel Baretto (ninth in boys u/19 category) and Gareth Vorster (sixth in Junior Men). Daniel and Gareth also won gold team medals in their respective age groups. The next day was the biathle event, which is similar to triathle but without the discipline of laser shooting. Again, Keira van Heerden put in another good performance in the girls u/13 race fighting with all she had and again finishing in a podium position and winning a gold team medal. Other top 10 finishes went to Daniel Richter (10th boys u/11) and Mark Stuart (ninth boys u/17) The NMBMPA committee are very proud of the all these athletes.

Nine gymnasts of the Gymstars Trampoline Club recently participated at the annual SA Gym Games held in Pretoria. The gymnasts performed excellently and received 18 medals â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 14 gold, three silver and one bronze. Team members, Luka Angileri and Liam Terblanche will also from November 13 to November 19 represent South Africa at the World Age Group Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria. Tanika Brown, Tarika Els and Chloe Terblanche will represent the South African Federation team at the Region 5 competition to be held in Namibia in December. Can Ferrari bounce back in Texas? MOST people would hold the opinion that the fight for the 2017 world championship is all but over. And you’d be hard pressed to make a legitimate argument against this opinion given that Lewis Hamilton holds a mammoth 59point lead going into the United States Grand Prix. It’s as good a time as any then at this weekend’s US Grand Prix for Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari to start cutting Hamilton’s lead. But they need to understand and overcome their reliability woes to do that. The galling thing for Ferrari over the last few races would have been that they had the pace to win, with the possible exception of Japan, but failed to even reach the chequered flag. Some suggestions are that quality control at the Maranello factory haven’t been up to scratch and its been painfully illustrated on track. It is further evidence of how much Ferrari have flirted with the edge in the design of their 2017 car in their bid to win the title. It’s evident that they’ve pushed the margins too far and have, arguably, lost the likely chance of being champions in 2017. The question is not really if Ferrari can recover. Instead, it is can they recover in time? It would be tough to find much support for the idea that Ferrari and Vettel could still walk away with the title. Still, however unlikely it seems, it is never

impossible, especially in a sport as unpredictable as Formula 1. The silver lining in Vettel’s woes, however small it might be, is that he will have fresher power unit components in the bank than Hamilton which could allow him to push harder on Sunday afternoon, granted he gets the opportunity to do so. For Hamilton, the equation is a simple one. Keep racking up the points by finishing each race, which will invariably not be outside the top three and it’ll be enough to make him a four- time champ perhaps even before the end of the season. If Hamilton were to win around the Circuit of the Americas this weekend and Vettel finished fifth or lower, Hamilton would be champion. What are Hamilton’s chances of taking victory in Texas this weekend? Barring any sort of unreliability for anyone, it should be a good fight between Merc and Ferrari with the latter probably holding an edge on Sunday. The first important factor is that the ultraand supersoft combination of tyre compounds are in the offing this weekend. Traditionally,

Ferrari has been stronger on this combination. What’s more, it’s also expected to be slightly warmer in Texas than in Japan, which plays to Ferrari’s strength as Merc’s problem of maintaining the correct core tyre temperature, continues to be an issue for them. The layout too of the Herman Tilke-designed track is more suitable to Ferrari and their aerodynamic proficiency. The first sector is dominated by a fast and flowing Esses section which has characteristics of both Silverstone’s iconic Maggots-Becketts complex and the first sector of Japan’s Suzuka circuit. In general, the five and a half kilometre circuit is dominated by medium to high-speed corners that reward a good aero package. Added to this are a few hairpins, which will encourage and provide overtaking opportunities. While most of the attention is focused at the front of the grid, there are a few changes in the offing further down. Carlos Sainz bid farewell to the Toro Rosso team in Japan and will this weekend race as a fully-fledged Renault works driver. It means that Daniil Kvyat returns to the Toro Rosso fold. Cyprians, who are popularly known as Amaqwarha, came up strongly from the beginning. Kwanto scored and converted his try which gave Amaqwarha a 7-0 lead. Lion City clinch first win against City Lads SELBY MADIKANE MOTHERWELL–BASED side Lion City showed that they were one of the ABC Motsepe League’s best outfits when they clinched their first home league victory of the 2017/2018 season against City Lads in their game that ended with a 3-1 score at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Saturday. Lion City took the game to the visitors whose defenders made needless mistakes on their own territory. In the 27th minute, Lion City’s central defender, Phumelele Msila, headed home his side’s opening goal. Lads suffered the consequences of their mistakes when Lion City’s lanky striker, Ayabonga Koli, was rewarded with a spec-

tacular goal that increased Lion City’s lead to 2-0 in the 29th minute. Lads seemed as if they had run out of ideas. The visiting side’s strikers did not look lethal against Lion City’s goalkeeper, Lwando Nkohla. Lads applied pressure and as a result, their hard work paid off when their skipper, Nkululeko Pinya, side-footed the ball into the back of Lion City’s goal in the 57th minute after their right winger, Thanduxolo Nompunya, delivered a perfect cross. In the 76th minute, Pinya could have scored his second goal, but his efforts went wide. Mnoneleli Mayeye Zitho initiated some good moves for Lion City in the midfield as he combined well with Luxolo Bibo Tobi and Thozamile Magwala. In the 81st minute, Zitho sent a good

cross to Magwala who side-footed the ball into the back of net, increasing Lion City’s lead to 3-1. Soon afterwards, City’s left full back, Phelelani Ntantala, penetrated four defenders before his tame shot was easily collected by Lads’ goalkeeper, Sinethemba Lunika. Lion City midfielder Axolile Messi Kapo’s shot hit the upright in the dying stages of the game, leaving the final score 3-1. Jendamark United a cricketing force to be reckoned with SELBY MADIKANE THE oldest New Brighton-based club, Jendamark United Cricket Club, proved beyond any doubt that they are a major force to be reckoned with when they became the first township club to win the Premier League title. According to Jendamark United Cricket Club administrator Stan Mosia, their players worked their socks off during the previous season. The club’s senior and reserve teams are currently the league winners. Mosia added that Jendamark, their major sponsor and effective and strong united management, had motivated and encouraged the players and lifted the spirit of the entire club. “The injection of the major sponsorship to the tune of R500 000 has contributed towards our club’s success. “The sponsorship is used

for transport, kit for playing, as well as for warming up, tracksuits, meals and general administration. “The sponsorship has been renewed this season and it is now R560 000. All these things have boosted the players’ confidence, team spirit and unity. I think our capable, qualified and experienced head coach, Riaan Jeggels, has also added value to the entire club. “His expertise has indeed been phenomenal to the club. Our team manager, Monde Nogaga, has also worked very hard.” Mosia stated that some of the players with Level 1 coaching qualifications did sterling grassroots’ cricket development work in New Brighton primary schools. He said that Monde Qumana was the head of the hub and highlighted that their chairman, Mongezi Majola, was also instrumental in the success of the club. “This season we will incentivise the best

players after the game.” Jendamark Cricket Club won their game against SA Home Loans Union Cricket Club by seven wickets and got a bonus point. Jendamark’s next match will be against NMU Madibaz Cricket Club 1 at Dan Qeqe Stadium on Sunday at 10am.
