NELSON MANDELA BAY WATER SHORTAGE
Gariep could bring relief LOURENS SCHOEMAN
I
F torrential rain does not relieve the critical water situation in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro within three months, the metro could possibly receive relief from another source. Annette Lovemore, Mayoral Committee Member for agriculture, electricity, energy and
infrastructure, said last week that phase 2 of the Nooitgedacht Low Level Scheme, which will provide water from the Gariep Dam to the metro, should be completed in July. “This will ensure an additional 50 mega litres of water per day. “One must keep in mind that the Churchill Dam, which is currently only at 19%, would probably be empty by that time if the rain stays
away. “Nooitgedacht’s water will only compensate for the loss of the Churchill Dam’s water and will not add anything. This will surely help a lot, especially if the dam gets good runoff after the rain,” said Lovemore. The metro confirmed last week that there would be an application to the provincial and national government to be declared a disaster
drought area later this month. If the application is successful, it will enable the metro to act sooner and to allocate budget and resources without much trouble to water supply efforts.
)At the time of going to print on Monday it could not yet be established what impact, if any, this past weekend’s rain had on the dam levels

Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism hosts global delegates REPORTER NELSON Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT) has been hosting visiting groups, such as tour operators, destination marketing agencies and international media to position the city as a world-class travel destination. NMBT provided them with an authentic experience of Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding areas. This month a UK Trade Group, comprising of international trade partners such as Discover the World, Newells Travel, BA Holidays and Highworth Travel will be hosted by NMBT. The group will spend time at the SA Marine Rehab and Lighthouse, followed by a relaxing Sun Set Beach Cruise. They will also visit the Pumba Private Game Reserve and Bridge Street Breweries. Next month, NMBT will welcome a Japanese visiting family and document their experiences and memories along the way. According to NMBT CEO, Mandlakazi Skefile, collaborations with the Asian Travel Market have grown over the past few as a direct result of hosting such initiatives. “As a destination marketing agency, forming collaborations through hosting initiatives gives us the opportunity to provide visitors with a personalised experience in our city which they can take home to share
with their friends, families and colleagues,” said Skefile. “Sharing their positive memories and experiences serve as the perfect marketing tool for Nelson Mandela Bay, as their opinions and impressions are shared, largely using digital platforms with great international reach,” said Skefile. Through collaborations with South African Tourism and the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency, first-hand knowledge of Nelson Mandela Bay’s unique offerings are shared with trade operators who are
then able to confidently sell travel packages to their respective markets. This also opens the city up to the prospect of international marketing opportunities, utilizing traditional advertising streams and digital marketing platforms such as WeChat, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, which reach large volumes of prospective visitors in international countries. NMBT has successfully established beneficial relations through hosting groups from countries such as China, Japan, Spain and the United Kingdom to name a few, providing them with meaningful experiences and fun activities.
These include experiencing the Bottlenose Dolphin Capital of the world, visiting the Mohair Headquarters, exclusive township tours and experiencing the city’s rich cultural heritage. International collaborations make significant inroads into the global travel market, creating positive spinoffs for the local economy and businesses that operate in the restaurant, accommodation, transport and entertainment industries of Nelson Mandela Bay. During a recent visit, a Spanish Television crew was hosted by NMBT and they spent five days in and around the city, filming a travel, cultural, cuisine and ultra-running documentary series (CHILOÉ). They spent time at the Addo National Elephant Park shooting the 76km Addo Elephant Trail Run, highlighting NMB’s interesting combination of urban resources, diverse cultures and nature. The crew also spent time touring the city, capturing footage of Route 67, Fort Frederick, Market Square, Jetty Street, City Hall and the Donkin Reserve. “Forming collaborations with the Spanish Television Crew gives Nelson Mandela Bay amazing exposure on an international platform. The 50-minute documentary (CHILOÉ) will be aired to approximately 60 000 Spanish viewers and around 95 000 radio listeners,” said Skefile.

Kweekhuise by NMMU stil leerlinge se honger ODETTE PARFITT
Correction: IN the article “Police issue warning: Do not stop for strangers” in the PE Express of April 12, it was stated that a 24-year-old man was hijacked in Strand Street in Humewood. Strand Street is in fact in Central, but falls under the Humewood policing area. We apologise for any confusion caused by this error.

encourage and motivate his students to continue with karate. Thom took up an existing dojo in 2000 and although it is difficult to recall the number of students he trained, he can confirm that among his students 35 black belts were awarded (up to 4th dan), 15 Goju-kai world champions, 21 goju-kai world medallists, four commonwealth medallists, four zone six champions, 10 zone six medallist, one All-Africa games medallist and several Protea karate team representatives. “I always tell my students that karate is about peace and not fighting. They come to learn about discipline, respect for themselves and others, personal growth physically, mentally and emotionally as well as pride and humility,” Thom concluded.
STRICT CREDIT ConTRoL MEASuRES BLOCKING OF ELECTRICITY METERS: MONDAYS TO FRIDAYS A decline in the revenue collection rate of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has been recorded. Evidently, a large number of customers (i.e. owners and consumers) of the services provided by the Municipality are not paying for these. In order to guarantee the future prosperity and development of our beautiful Metro, it is essential that customers pay their municipal accounts. Action taken by the Municpality in this regard include the strict enforcement of the NMBM Debt Collection Policy. Also, the Muncipality will no longer allow leniency around down payment requirements. As from 1 November 2016, where accountholders are in arrears, no set-off have been applied (set-off means not receiving the full value of your pre-paid electricity purchases, as a portion is set off against your arrear debt) – for businesses and domestic users. Instead, the pre-paid electricity meter is totally blocked fifteen (15) days after due date, and no further purchases is allowed until all arrears owing by the household have been settled or suitable arrangements have been made to repay such arrears. A blocking admin fee of R240 – R340 is payable, together with the arrear amount, indicated on your latest statement, before the meter can be unblocked.

Clayton Thom formed part of a delegation who visited Japan for two weeks (March 28 to April 10), where he was awarded the shihan title. The delegation participated in intensive traditional training with the President of Gojukai karate, Seiko Shihan Goshi Yamagutchi, and other senior members. Thom is the first person from Eastern Province Goju-kai Karate to receive the title. “Karate is not just a sport or art to most of its practitioners, it becomes a way of life. A karateka continues to strive towards improving physically, mentally, emotionally daily. The growth of oneself and realizing your full potential is always the objective. Although one does not practise the art for any form of recognition, to receive an accolade like this is an honour not bestowed on many,” said Thom. He is the sensei at the Goju-kai karate dojo in Hillside, Port Elizabeth, and has trained in karate for 30 years. He holds the World Champion senior kumite in Goju-kai Karate (fighting) title in 2009. He currently has a 5th Dan in Goju-Kai karate. Thom is also the team coach for Karate South Africa as well as Eastern Cape Karate and a former team member of Karate South Africa. “Potential candidates are recommended for the new ranking, which has to be agreed to by the majority vote by all shihan of the country of recommended candidates. The president then has the final decision,” explained Thom. Some of the criteria to meet for the shihan title includes the minimum rank of 5th dan and effort put into growing and developing martial arts. Thom was recommended based on all past efforts made, including his roles as Provincial head for Eastern Province Goju-kai, Provincial and South African team coach, among others. As a sensei with over 100 students at the dojo, Thom said that he hoped his shihan title would

Sovereign Foods answers AACL’s donation plea REPORTER ON March 22, the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) sent out a donation request in the PE Express after the organisation’s only mobile clinic was involved in a car accident and considered a write-off. Uitenhage-based poultry producer, Sovereign Foods, responded to their plea with a contribution of R20 000 to purchase the much-needed vehicle. “The incident occurred when our van was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle that was travelling in the wrong direction on the one-way off ramp from Standford Road to Bethelsdorp. The impact resulted in the mobile clinic being a total write-off,” said Glen Truscott, Chairman of the AACL. Truscott was relieved to announce that nobody sustained any serious injuries in the collision and the animals in the van were safe. “Our employees transported the animal’s home with their personal vehicles,” he said. Without a vehicle, the AACL’s daily outreach operations are halted as two field teams are normally sent out to northern suburbs districts to provide health and veterinary care to animals from less fortunate communities. These districts include Timothy Valley, KwaNoxolo, New Brighton, KwaZakhele, Sewende Laan, Barcelona, Sanctor and Helenvale.

On average, three animals are transported to the AACL’s Clearly Park Clinic and Ninth Avenue Walmer Veterinary Clinic daily. These cases are generally for sterilisation and require an overnight stay. The Clearly Park Clinic focuses on sterilisations, vaccinations, de-worming and other treatments provided to animals. The new vehicle’s cost will be subsidised by the insurance paid out, as well as the donations received from Sovereign Foods and other private parties. It is estimated that a further R40 000 is needed to purchase a new vehicle. “We are thankful to Sovereign Foods for providing us with such a large financial contribution in a time when the country’s economy is experiencing a crisis. With the donation, we are one step closer in restoring our outreach operations that support community accessibility to animal health care,” said Truscott. Group Executive for Human Resources at Sovereign Foods, Thuto Maepa, applauded the AACL for the vital role the organisation plays in the sustainment of animal welfare. “As a poultry producer, we regard our bird well-being and health as a priority. All our farming operations follow strict measures that ensure our flocks are raised in the best conditions and are cared for properly,” Maepa added. “Sovereign Foods is committed to its corporate social responsibility programme by supporting beneficiaries, such as the AACL, that provide positive initiatives to

Over the past four years, the AACL has sterilised 8 858 animals and wishes to increase that number with the help of the organisation’s dedicated sterilisation operating theatre.
Not a stranger to sustainable development contributions, Sovereign Foods donated more than R300 000 to various beneficiaries within Nelson Mandela Bay last year. The current financial year sees the company’s corporate social responsibility department aiming to identify deserving education and community development programmes that require assistance.

Varsity College reaches out to NPOs and NGOs REPORTER NON-GOVERNMENTAL organisations (NGOs) and non-profit organisations (NPOs) now have the opportunity to apply for the Operations Switch On Bursary to partake in a short learning programme at The Business School at Varsity College. The bursary forms part of Varsity College’s Corporate Social Investment Initiative aimed at facilitating community based skills development which could enhance skills and ultimately service delivery for the organisation’s staff. “This year, we launched a fantastic initiative called Each One Reach One. The aim of the initiative is to encourage every student to be involved in a cause and make an impact in 2017. We will be inviting different NGO/NPO’s that are linked to our different themes onto campus on a regular basis,” said Jaci Howell, Student Relations Manager at Varsity College. As part of the ongoing community engagement programme at Varsity College, students are given the opportunity to engage with the community face to face. The Each One Reach One initiative is two-fold and provides NGO/NPOs with a platform to interact with students and staff, informing them about the services they offer and what their orga-
nisation represents. The initiative’s theme for March was Risqué or Risky and NGOs, such as the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA), Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and The Cancer Association of Southern Africa (CANSA), were on campus. “Our students were introduced to NGOs that focus on tobacco smoking, drug and alcohol prevention and intervention. While April has the same theme, the focus is on sexual wellness, which includes education regarding HIV and other STDs, a condom drive and rape and pregnancy awareness and support,” said Howell. Nal’ibali, a national campaign that uses storytelling and reading to unlock children’s potential, was one of the recipients who received the bursary last year. Nal’ibali’s Malusi Puwe will be completing the Project Management Short Learning Programme in May with The Business School. “Completing the Project Management Short Learning Programme will help me with my role within the Nal’ibali organisation,” he said. Anyone interested in the bursary can send their application to Jaci Howell at jhowell@varsitycollege.co.za. Attach a motivational letter, CV and the chosen short learning programme. Applications close on April 21.

The 2-in-1 jacket is the perfect thing to battle the bitter cold that winter is sure to bring our way. It has a removable insulated hood and it is water resistant. For the ladies who are brave enough to join in on the hunting experience, the Tech Softshell Jacket, which is also water resistant and has a two-tone zip with a storm flap, coupled

with the Williemien Cargo Pants is definitely the way to go. Over the years, South Africa has become one of the most popular places to hunt in Africa. In the Eastern Cape specifically, the terrain is often covered with thorn trees, often providing the hunter with a challenge in terms of cover. In this area, he or she would require a specific type of camouflage to be able to hide from his prey. This is another area in which Wildebees’s new Sekelbos pattern shines. It is designed to blend in with these harsh landscapes. The stark contrast between the dark and light tones creates visual confusion, making you invisible to your prey.
Hunting definitely has the potential to be a dangerous sport, which is why it is very important to have the right gear based on the weather and your surroundings. Hunting in the Eastern Cape is a truly unique experience, offering a wide variety of animal species, from the prized kudu to the bushbuck, and various different natural environments, including the mountains, plains and densely wooded forests. All these things combined could possibly make this coming hunting season the greatest adventure of your life. Schauderville churches go the extra mile REPORTER THE Weis Memorial and Bethesda Congregational Churches in Schauderville joined hands to host events in an effort to address certain issues in their community. Two of these events are a Career Day that took place last month and a Health Awareness Day on April 8.
Both events took place at Weis Memorial due to its central location in the neighbourhood. The churches’ main aim was to address the lack of information that often leads to people making uninformed decisions that could have farreaching consequences. These decisions include career choices and medical treatments. “Decisions are made on a daily ba-

Without the necessary knowledge uninformed decisions are made that could add to the burdens of a society that already has many challenges,” said Charmaine Coetzee, a member of the Bethesda Congregational Church. On Career Day, learners from surrounding schools were encouraged to actively participate in the discussions about various careers with the exhibitors. This gave them access to information that will help them make decisions about their subject choices for their chosen future careers to break the cycle of unemployment and poverty. On Health Awareness Day, the community had access to various screening tests which included blood pressure and blood glucose monitoring, as well as TB screening and more. The prevention and screening for potential health risks plays an important part in the reduction of complications that develop due to a delay

This year’s Edge Muck Run promises to be an unforgettable experience with about a dozen fun and exciting obstacles along the 5km trail run route. Due to the number of participants taking part in the event, the 5km

Bay kids mean business at holiday camp REPORTER WHEN he grows up, Port Elizabeth’s Kavish Athimoolam (10) is certain of one thing: he’s going to work with animals, by either joining the Police K9 Unit or by opening his own pet parlour. Should he choose the latter, he is already taking steps to ensure he has the business skills to make it a success. Athimoolam was one of eight children who participated in the Bay’s first holiday programme last week to develop young entrepreneurs. The group sold their wares – bright yellow emoji-themed pencil holders and pil-

lows – at Walmer Park on Saturday, April 8. “I learned that it’s not just about money, it’s about what you do,” said Athimoolam, a learner at Herbert Hurd Primary School. The Edutainment Holiday Camp – which was run by national organisation Young Entrepreneurs – took place from April 4 to 6 and catered for children aged 7 to 12. “I learned what a logo is and how to make a business work,” said Athimoolam’s younger sister, Vaishivi (8) who also attended the course. She plans to be a teacher one day. Excelsior Primary’s Vuyo Ngetu (13) plans to have a dual career as a successful entrepreneur and actor. “I’ve learned how to open my own business and I’m very much looking forward to selling my products.” Reeva Naidoo (8), who is home-schooled, also enjoys acting and aims to open her own movie production company. “I want to run my own business,” she said. Young Entrepreneurs franchise holder in Port Elizabeth, Ansulene Prinsloo, who is passionate about developing the business and financial literacy skill sets of Eastern Cape learners, introduced the programme to the Bay earlier this year to equip children with the tools to one day run their own businesses and manage their finances. The holiday camp is a mini version of the formal Young Entrepreneurs programme, which runs for 30 weeks a year, catering for Grades 1 to 9 learners from all schools in the city, while also running linked outreach programmes in selected township schools. In the formal programme, children gain invaluable business-, life- and financial literacy skills from the experience of starting their own business, which entails coming

They also learn how to manage their money, with a strong focus on saving, spending, sharing and investing. Prinsloo said, “The world is fast changing, and we need to prepare our children for a future where small businesses will be
the drivers of job creation. Therefore, our children need to be taught how to start and operate their own businesses. “People think, to be successful, you have to go to university. But in the new economy, even a degree is no guarantee of a job. Failing to adapt to the changing environment, puts our children at risk of being left behind,” said Prinsloo.

A COURAGEOUS runner will brave all elements to run 1 000km over the course of ten days from Port Elizabeth to Durban in aid of cancer. Richard Geyer has dedicated himself to take on the challenge in support of those affected by cancer. His motivation to adopt this project stems from the unfortunate loss of his grandfather Bob Petzer in 2014. Petzer was previously diagnosed with bladder cancer, which was successfully removed after an operation. In January 2014, he underwent an emergency operation for an aneurysm which resulted in the amputation of both his legs. Six months later, his cancer was back again and this time the treatment was unsuccessful. “Seeing my grandfather’s zest for life, his will to fight and his continuous positive attitude through that trying time encouraged me to run,” said Geyer. “I will be running in memory of him to raise funds for cancer, a disease so many others and their families have to endure.” His long journey will kicks off on May 26 in Port Elizabeth and will end with the Comrades Marathon that is set to take place in Durban and end in Pietermaritzburg on June 4. All proceeds from this worthy cause will be donated to CANSA Port Elizabeth. To support the cause and for more info, visit the Bob1000 Facebook page or send an email to runbob1000@gmail.com.

AFTER 9 YEARS OF SUFFERING MAAMA FATIMA SAVED MY LIFE I am 45 years old from Summerstrand, after losing in all
healers, as I have tried almost all of them in Eastern Cape. Not one had helped me, until Maama Fatima saved me, my life was a mess. I had two big court cases, no job at the time and my girlfriend had left me. My life was upside down, luckily I read about Maama Fatima. She gave me a MAGIC RING and the first day, I won R420 000 in the casino, my financial problems were solved, my court cases were dismissed and I am happily in love now. The name Maama Fatima means joy in my life Stop suffering in silence.

ARE YOU FRUSTRATED AND DEPRESSED FINANCIALLY (DON'T lose faith, give Prof Hope a try)
Strongest Healer
My name is Reuben, am 48 years old, I stay with 4 children, for a very long time there was no happiness in my life, even my wife left me because I couldn't support my own family. I had to look after my parents. I was the only breadwinner in our family and I was working as care giver. I struggled financially my kids needed school uniforms, my parents needed help with basic needs as they are elderly. I visited different pastors, prophets and traditional healers with no one could help me. I wasted all the money, but no results, I just kept losing the little I had. I was helpless for many years, until I read a testimony of Gabriel who was testifying the good work Prof Hope did to change his life by using Short boys to put money into his account. I made an appointment with him he explained to me all the options like money rats to put money in the house on same day, short boys to put money in your Account on same day, magic ring to win money games like gambling, casino, lotto and betting. Magic wallet to multiply your money. I chose money rats to put money in my house. He explained to me the process, I couldn't believe when I received the money on the same day. I immediately contacted him and paid him 25% and my sister chose magic ring for lotto and we are financially stable, all thanks to Prof Hope. Also helps with: bring back lost lover, family matters, bring back stolen goods, bind y o u r p r o p e r t y, m a l e enlargement. Home visits AROUND Eastern Cape.

EXPRESS ON WHEELS: BETTIE GILIOMEE
We put the Suzuki Baleno to the test SUZUKI has become known in SA for its zippy compact cars with, especially, the Swift seen more and more on our roads.
The Suzuki Baleno is larger than the Swift and has an aerodynamic, streamlined shape accentuated by blacked out A and B pillars. PHOTO: SUPPLIED
Towards the end of last year, they introduced their new Baleno model in the country, aimed at filling the gap in their line-up for a hatchback that is a bit bigger than the Swift but smaller than a sedan or compact SUV. All the models in the Baleno range have Suzuki’s K14B 1,4 litre engine which is also used in the Swift and Ciaz models. The Baleno comes in a choice of either a five-speed manual or fourspeed automatic transmission and it is available in two specification levels. The lower spec GL model is offered with the manual gearbox only, while the higher spec GLX versions is available in either the manual or the automatic transmissions. The test model for this week’s Express on Wheels, was the GLX version with 5-speed manual transmission. Exterior The Baleno is larger than the Swift and has an aerodynamic, streamlined shape accentuated by blacked out A and B pillars. The rear is quite wide housing a very generous boot space. A rooftop spoiler is standard on GLX models adding a bit of a sporty touch. Interior I think the good use of the interior space and feeling of roominess is one of the Baleno’s biggest selling points. The Swift always offered a pleasant ride, good performance and even good looks, but the small boot has let it down. This is definitely not the case as far as the Baleno is concerned as it offers a nice, deep and wide boot space. The cabin feels much roomier that one would have imagined looking at the compact exterior.
Even the back seat passengers will have no reason for complaints, and it is wide enough for three occupants. The rear bench seat is divided in a 60:40 split for different cargo space options. The boot offers 355 litres of space with the rear bench seat raised, and can be extended to 756 litres with the rear seat folded flat. Total rear volume to roof height with the seat folded flat is 1 085 litres. Much like the outside, the interior design is uncomplicated and uncluttered. The dashboard also features wing-shaped details that is reminiscent of that of the Ford’s Fiesta, but in the Baleno this is toned down a bit.
with alarm/immobiliser system, remote central locking, ABS anti-lock brakes, augmented electronic brake force distribution (EBD), emergency braking assistance (EBA) and dual front airbags as standard. Even the entry-level GL version is comprehensively equipped. The Baleno GL has 15-inch steel wheels with full wheel covers, and 175/65 R15 tyres. The spare wheel is located under the luggage compartment floor to save space. Electric windows in the front and back, manual air-conditioning with a pollen filter, remote central locking, and electrically adjustable exterior mirrors are standard. The Baleno’s on-board computer gives info on range, instant and average fuel consumption, time and the trip distance travelled.
The tilt-adjustable multifunction steering wheel, features controls for the audio system, and the Bluetoothbased hands-free telephony system. In the Baleno GL, the audio system comprises an MP3-compatible CD receiver with six loudspeakers and integrated Bluetooth. There’s also a USB port, a 3,5mm stereo auxiliary input and a 12V power socket. The higher spec GLX offers everything on the GL list, but with some additions and upgrades, such as LED daytime running lights, low-mounted recessed fog lamps, chrome finishes, roof-spoiler, privacy glass for the rear windows and rear screen and revised tail light clusters. The GLX models are fitted with 16inch alloy wheels with 185/55 R16 Equipment levels tyres. All Baleno models come standard Upgrades and additions in the interior of the Baleno GLX include a 6,2 inch TFT colour screen for the infotainment system. As far as safety goes, the GLX models gain side and curtain airbags, while the ABS braking system features rear disc brakes, instead of the GL model’s rear drums. Ride The Baleno is built on an all-new platform to be more rigid while reducing its weight. Despite being larger than the Swift, the Baleno is eleven per cent lighter weighing in at 915kg. The lightweight construction gives the engine, which is not turbocharged, a much-needed boost and is good for the fuel efficiency too. At speed it goes smoothly and solidly and its electrically assisted steering and handling is precise. It offers a zippy, spirited ride around town as well as on the open road. During my time with the Baleno, which was mostly on the urban and peak hour commute, it achieved a fuel consumption of 7.5 litres per 100km. Suzuki claims an average fuel consumption for the combined cycle of 5,1 litres/100km for the manual model and 5,4 litres/100km for the automatic version. Warranty and Servicing The new Baleno is covered by a standard three-year/100 000km warranty, as well as a fouryear/60 000km service plan. Services are at 15 000km/12-month intervals.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE
Win in Bahrain: Ferrari have turned a corner IN pre-season testing all indications were that Ferrari had turned a significant corner and that Mercedes would finally, after three years of dominance, have a challenge on their hands. Despite these indications, many couldn’t believe their eyes and were sure that Mercedes were sandbagging. But the results of the three races of the 2017 season thus far have proven that pre-season testing was no fluke and that Ferrari are more than capable of challenging for the titles. Under the floodlights of the Sakhir International Circuit, Sebastian Vettel scored Ferrari’s second win in three races, while Lewis Hamilton and polesitter Valtteri Bottas completed the top three. Bottas led cleanly off the line as Vettel got the jump on Hamilton and proceeded to stalk the back of the leading Mercedes for the duration of his first stint. The Ferrari’s ability to stick as close as it does to the car in front of it, is a significant revelation of the strength of its aerodynamic package. In contrast, several other drivers, including Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, have deemed it impossible to follow closely in their cars.
While Vettel was able to stick close, it was clear that he lacked the ultimate edge to overtake Bottas. It is at this point that Ferrari called Mercedes’ bluff by diving into the pitlane first. Here, unlike in China, Vettel was able to make the undercut work and, with fresh tyres, set a handful of laptimes much quicker than both Mercs and took over the lead of the race. Mercedes had been caught out by Ferrari’s aggressive strategy and seemed flustered by it. It wasn’t long after the first round of pitstops that Max Verstappen suffered a brake failure, which ended his race. Soon thereafter, a coming together of Williams’ Lance Stroll and Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz brought out the safety car for only the third time in the history of the Bahrain GP. Merc were genuinely rattled too. As they attempted to service both Bottas and Hamilton on the same lap the latter was given a five-second penalty for driving unnecessarily slowly at the entrance to the pitlane. Ultimately, Hamilton finished roughly seven seconds off Vettel with Bottas trailing home in a disconsolate third after being instructed to give way to his teammate twice. In fairness, Hamilton was closing on
Bottas at a rate of two seconds per lap and the pass would’ve been inevitable. Meanwhile, despite an expected brake-bywire issue, Kimi Raikkonen showed a better turn of pace in the second half of the race and finished fourth. Perplexingly, the Ferrari pitwall again botched the Finn’s strategy by leaving him out for too long. Nevertheless, it is quickly becoming clear that unless Raikkonen wants to be considered the second driver within the team, it’s about time that he starts unlocking the promise of his Ferrari. In fifth Daniel Ricciardo had a fairly anonymous race as he trailed home nearly forty seconds adrift. Felipe Massa finished in a solid sixth place for Williams ahead of Force India’s Sergio Perez, in seventh, and Haas’ Romain Grosjean in eighth.

In the Renault Nico Hulkenberg scored two points for ninth place, while Esteban Ocon finished tenth for a third consecutive time in the Force India. It was nearly impossible to imagine that McLaren’s situation could get any worse, but it has. Not only did Stoffel Vandoorne not make the start of the race, but Fernando Alonso also retired on the final lap with an “engine problem”. The announcement that Alonso will skip the Monaco GP in favour of the Indy 500 seems the only bit of good news for the embattled team at the moment. As Vettel now leads the driver championship by 7 points, it’s clear that the 2017 season is primed for a battle royale between the prancing horses and the silver arrows which takes up again in Russia in two weeks’ time.

Annual Nanaga MTB Race to take place this month REPORTER MOUNTAIN bike enthusiasts have something to look forward to with the fourth annual Nanaga MTB Race, organised by local events company Free Spirit Adventures, set to take place on April 23. The race includes four distances to suit all levels of fitness and expertise. Participants can choose between the 50km,
30km, 15km route for beginners and the 5km fun ride. The routes cover some stunning private farmland which has been made available specifically for this event. It will take place at the popular Nanaga Farm Stall just outside Port Elizabeth. The event will also include live entertainment, stalls selling various wares and a play area for the kids. “We are fortunate to have the support of
some amazing sponsors. Clover has joined with us for the first time this year and we are thrilled to partner with them. The race is held on local dairy farms, so Clover is a good fit for this event,” said Sheena O’Keeffe, Chairman of Free Spirit Adventures. “Meadow Feeds has been part of the event since its inception in 2014 and is a natural partner in this farming community and they value the opportunity to give back via this charity event,” said O’Keeffe..
The Nanaga MTB Race was initially held as a fundraiser for their chosen beneficiary, namely the Sunshine Coast Charity Trust. The group of dedicated farmers and their wives are involved in a number of local community projects that help children who live with and are affected by HIV and AIDS. The Nanaga MTB Race will take place on April 23. Online entries close on April 19. For more info go to www.trailadventures.co.za.
