Concern over rubbish washing up on wildside beaches LIZEKA TANDWA RAGGY Charters and the Baywatch Project owner, Lloyd Edwards, said they are concerned by the massive increase of rubbish and waste washing up on the beaches, causing damage to sea life and businesses operating within the shores.
Edwards has been involved in a vigorous campaign to clean up the main fishing grounds off Seaview, Beachview and Maitlands. lem that has laid waste to our once beautiful beaches. We just cannot cope anymore. The problem is just getting worse and people are starting to give up hope. “We also know that supplies for the squid boats come with a shopping list of all items loaded. The rubbish after the trip is supposed to be checked against this list to make sure it is returned to shore for disposal. This obviously does not happen. The owners of the boats and skippers should be taken to task for non-compliance.” Neville Noble from SAMSA’s Port Elizabeth branch said the matter had been referred to their maritime Fishing and Safety specialist, Selwin Bailey, who had already made contact with the fishing boats to arrange for a meeting about the problem two weeks ago. “We are aware of the problem and we are making plans to sort out the issues relayed by Mr Edwards. This was the first complaint of its kind made to us and our Safety Specialist is on the job.” Noble however said he could not confirm with certainty that the rubbish collecting on the beaches was a result of the fishing industry. Edwards said, “I know it is the chokka boats throwing their rubbish overboard because every day of my life I spend an hour walking my dogs in front of my house in Seaview and monitor the litter washing up. Two days after the squid industry started fishing on the November 23, the rubbish started washing up in heaps on our beaches. I collect all the rubbish and put it in blue squid freezer bags and pile it up and take photos. I also know plenty of skippers in the squid industry; they confirm that the rubbish I pick up comes from the boats. Milk cartons, plastic bottles, detergent bottles, various plastic wrappings, the list is endless.” Edwards said while the state of the beach between Seaview and Laurie’s Bay has improved drastically, they need more people involved and need to expand to Beachview and Maitlands. “The area in front of Nautilus Crescent and Chapman Road also needs more regular attention. The idea is to use local residents who would like to walk their dogs on the beach or even just walk on the beach and assist by getting litter to various points,” he ended. Municipal engineering bursary scheme boost employment figures REPORTER SINCE a strategy to counter the loss of engineering skills was conceived in 2004, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality managed to employ the majority of the students who received comprehensive bursaries from the local government institution on a full time basis. Councillor Andile Mfunda, Portfolio Committee Chairperson for Infrastructure, Engineering, Electricity and Energy, said this initiative bodes well for the municipality since 30 of the 43 individuals who received bursaries from the municipality are already part of our team. “Another three will officially report for duty during the first two months whilst 9 are at various stages of completing their studies. Only one student left the municipality after finishing the compulsory working period. “We are also not just throwing these young men and women into the deep end, as Council approved an item in 2012 for the appointment of retired engineers to mentor the bursars and inexperienced staff. “This programme is extremely important as we not only give students an opportunity to study without the headache of worrying where the money for tuition, meals, accommodation and books will come from, they also get stipends while getting practical experience in the work place. To top it all, they are also assured of a permanent job aft-

er successfully completing their studies. “With our intake of students this year, our aim is to address the need for qualified students in B Eng (Civil Engineering), BSc: Mechanical and B Sc: Electrical Engineering,” Mfunda said. The municipality will publish a call for prospective engineers to apply shortly. The criteria are as follows: Bursaries for study are available in the following engineering disciplines: BSc. Civil Engineering B. Sc./B. Eng Mechanical Engineering B. Sc. Electrical Engineering Who can apply: Grade 12 learners with South African ID numbers, who are permanent residents in South Africa. Must have Matric exemption, with Mathematics and Science, minimum B average (HG). Current students at university already studying B. Sc./Civil, B. Sc./B. Eng. Mechanical and B. Sc. Electrical Engineering. The bursary will cover tuition, residence and meal fees. The successful candidate will be required to enter into a binding contract with the Council after graduation for a period equal to the tenure of the bursary. Where bursars are required to undertake experiential training, as prescribed by the course, with the Municipality, an allowance will be paid to the bursar during this period.

“As we embrace 2015 with sunshine and a smile, we are faced with the unduly task of managing our finances. “Turning a new leaf, and as we try to stick to our new year’s resolutions with the sound of ‘happy new year’ still ringing in our ears, we will manage it . . . be it good, bad or ugly. “This week I will focus on the more than generous drop in the price of fuel.”

Little girls can click to design own clothes REPORTER BESIDES being parents to two little girls who love new clothes, Port Elizabeth couple Mandy and Deon Berning are both astute business people, who decided to turn a retail gap into a novel online solution.
THE fully-equipped Phelophepa Health Train, an initiative of the Transnet Foundation, will be stationed at the Swartkops Station from January 26 until February 6 to provide healthcare services to impoverished residents from Nelson Mandela Bay. The first Phelophepa coach – recipient of the United Nations Public Service Award in the “Improving Service Delivery” category in June 2008 – made its way to awaiting patients in rural South Africa in 1994 as a three-carriage eye clinic. The project developed to two custom-built
eighteen-carriage trains equipped with modern medical equipment. Known as the miracle train, Phelophepa provides vision screening programmes, health, oral, dental care, screening for diabetes and cancer, psychological counselling services, basic health education awareness and community counselling workshops. The public is advised that services will be provided between 7am and 4pm from Monday to Thursday, and from 7:30am to 12pm on a Friday. The train is not open during weekends. – REPORTER

A year ago, Mandy and a friend were bemoaning the limited choice of girls’ clothes at popular retail outlets. “The stuff in the shops is usually too ‘old’ for girls aged 10 or 11. They’re growing them up too fast. And all the kids end up looking the same. We thought: Wouldn’t it be nice if there was something a bit more special?” Mandy had also noticed how much her daughters – Jamie (10) and Ella (6) – loved “dressing” Tinkerbell and Barbie on her iPad. Subsequent discussions with husband Deon turned into concrete ideas which – largely through a chain of serendipity events involving likeminded family and friends – led to the late-September launch of their novel website, PrettiYou, an online space where little girls can design their own clothes. It’s a high-tech version of paper dolls, where teens, tweens and little shoppers (aged 2 to 14) can click on a virtual “model” and then “dress her” in the clothes they like, and in the sizes, colours and designs of their choice, adding lace, prints, appliques or other accessories as they go along – until they have created something uniquely theirs. “Little girls can make their clothes reflect who they are,” said Mandy. “My mum used to make my clothes when I was little. I would pick the colour, the different buttons to put on, and I always had a badge. It was mine
alone. This is an attempt to recreate some of that magic too.” PrettiYou’s designer is Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University fashion design graduate Ane Snyman, who researched international summer trends before launching the opening collection – a spring/summer range with a girls’ garden tea party theme – which has led to orders from as far as Bloemfontein, Pretoria and Cape Town. Tasteful and classic, the range includes cotton or viscose dresses, skirts, shorts and shirts in soft pastels or black with polka dots, as well as bags, brooches and pendants. Gift vouchers are also available. “We didn’t want a million options. It’s a range where you can pick and mix – and it works. We also wanted a range where you could shop for a special occasion, or just for shorts… I hope it starts a new trend.” PrettiYou is far removed from the couple’s normal day jobs. Mandy, who trained in industrial psychology, is the founder and chief executive of Equinox, a national company that provides companies with psychological testing and training sorted to the corporate world, such as interpersonal skills and leadership development. Deon owns Carite, a company that installs air-conditioners and other automotive systems. They opened their respective businesses in 2000, the same year they got married. “I understand business but I’m also a mommy of little girls. PrettiYou marries the two together nicely,” said Mandy. “We’re having fun.” “I love it,” said Jamie. And they’ve had to stop Ella from ordering everything her little fingers can click on.

SPOTLIGHT ON: GARY HEMMINGS
Hemmings takes centrestage ANNA PAUW DRIVEN by one man’s passion, Centrestage has dazzled audiences in PE and around the globe for almost 20 years. Gary Hemmings, who has been living in the Bay since the age of two, started Centrestage in 1996 with the assistance of wife Tanya and investor, Bill Monks. “After meeting Bill, we took over the running of the PE Club and opened Centrestage as a 7-days-a-week dinner- theatre there, bringing top music and comedy shows down from throughout the country. Later we moved to the Harbour Sports Café and then started our relationship with the Boardwalk. We have reinvented Centrestage many times, from a venue to a box office, agency to a production house,” said Hemmings who is the mastermind behind the group’s success. Centrestage has since blossomed into a topnotch entertainment company, boasting an array of exceptionally talented artists. “While the shows we stage publically get the most publicity and attention, the main thrust of our business is creating entertainment for
corporate functions. We travel extensively and regularly throughout South Africa, performing at high profile corporate events, where we fly the PE flag high.” What many people may not know is that – aside from the rare exception – Hemmings conceptualizes, creates the marketing, selects the casts, selects the songs and is generally solely responsible for the creation of each and every Centrestage show. “We have been lucky to have had a number of shows which have been hits over the years and our Centrestage shows have been seen by hundreds of thousands of people,” said Hemmings. According to him 2015 holds many surprises for loyal Centrestage fans and firsttimers. “We will be launching Gino Fabbri’s brand new show called ‘Wisecracks’ early in the year, as well as re-staging our popular Neil Diamond show as a fundraising opportunity in March. I am also working on a Shirley Bassey show to show off the incredible talent of Donna Africa.” He said musically they would definitely be spending more time in the 90’s this year. “I

The launch of a dance company a project with Duck Chowles and the opening of a Cape Town office are also in the pipeline for this year. According to him his passion for music started at a very early age. “At the age of four or five, I was transfixed by my parent’s record collection. It consisted of the likes of Tom Jones, Elvis, Andy Williams, Herb Albert and the Tijuana Taxi, The Carpenters, The Beatles and Johnny Matthis – and I listened to this music constantly. I think this gave me the grounding to help me appreciate the music of the fifties and sixties from the outset. I was also a Springbok radio fanatic from a very early age. “Later, after opening Centrestage in its first incarnation as a venue which staged outside productions, I staged such a variety of productions for ever-changing short runs that I learned an enormous amount about entertainment. This later helped when I started creating customised shows.” Hemmings and his wife Tanya have been married for 14 years. “I am extremely proud of my wife. I met her at UPE in 1986 and fell in love with her, literally at first sight. I got seriously friend-zoned initially while she became a Chartered Accountant in 1990. A few years later all that changed and we started Centrestage together, along with Bill. Tanya worked tirelessly and for little reward for years to help me chase my dream and build an entertainment business. Now she has returned to NMMU and has completed her second degree in Psychology Cum Laude. She is doing Honours this year and hopes to qualify for Masters next.” In his spare time he likes working on new comedy and show ideas. “I also like entertaining friends, drinking wine and fishing – which I don’t prioritise nearly as much as I should do!”

Reduce, reuse, recycle with The Waste Takers LIZEKA TANDWA A NEW business in the Northern suburbs is giving residents of the impoverished areas of the community the opportunity to make an income by simply collecting waste within their area. Mary Phillips started her waste recycling buy-back centre in Windvogel, The Waste Takers, with a plan to help her community become self-sustaining. Phillips said through her waste recycling business, she will be able to empower her community but also ensure a greener environment by encouraging her community to maintain cleaner suburbs. “This is a simple way to make money. One can collect anything from paper, cardboard, newspapers, magazines, glass, plastic bottles and other plastics. When they have collected enough kilograms of waste, they bring it to me and I in turn reward them with hard cash,”
she said. Phillips said depending on the weight of the waste, a person can earn enough money for a night’s meal for them and their family. “There are currently people in the Northern areas who collect waste but they have to travel kilometres to other areas to be rewarded. This business is the first of its kind in the area and I want people to know that they don’t have to travel for hours with heavy loads. They can just drop them on my doorstep,” she said. Phillips said her objective in starting the business was to reduce, reuse, recycle and upscale all waste. Phillips, who is also helping the community by teaching children the value of waste, said she also called on big businesses to sponsor her various projects. For more information on The Waste Takers contact Phillips on 082 651 9417 or visit The Waste Takers at 3 Bethelsdorp Road, Windvogel.

“Albei my dogters is gimnaste en atlete.

Top entertainers at Algoa Live concert
REPORTER

ONE of SA’s most loved bands, Freshlyground will once again be reunited with their NMB fans for a one-night-only show happening in the city on Sunday, January 25.
SOME of the country’s favourite entertainers will be in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, March 7, for the first Algoa FM “Algoa Live” concert. The line-up includes seven top national acts including Mi Casa, Jimmy Nevis, Kurt Darren, Prime Circle, Lloyd Cele, Goldfish and Stuart Reece. “As the leading music station in the Eastern Cape and Garden Route we see the need – and the opportunity – to give fans the chance to see their favourite South African artists live on stage,” said Dave Tiltmann, managing director of Algoa FM. The seven-hour concert is being staged in Prince Alfred Park at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. “It is seldom that you will find so many national acts of this calibre appearing in a single concert. This is a real coup for Port Elizabeth. There are plans to stage the concert annually. We know it will grow to become a popular sought-after event both locally and nationally,” Tiltmann added. Concert tickets will be available from 6am on Thursday, December 18, and are being sold at R150 for adults and R80 for children (under 18). Tickets will be available online via Ticketpros on www.ticketpros.co.za or purchased at participating PostNet outlets within the station’s broadcast area; including Beacon Bay, Vincent, Grahamstown, Uitenhage, in Port Elizabeth at Metlife Plaza, Moffett on Main, PE Waterfront Express, Sunridge Village, The
Freshlyground reunites with NMB fans at cricket The band have not performed in the city since 2011 and are always extremely well-received when performing here. The band will also do a meet and greet with fans during the lunch break at the Momentum One day International match happening at St George’s Park cricket ground between SA and the West Indies, and the show which will happen after the game, will take place at McArthur’s Pools making it the official after party for the ODI. Members of the public attending the show will then also have the opportunity to meet and spot some of the cricket players who attend the show. Freshlyground formed in early 2002, and is
made up of seven talented and diverse musicians from South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Fronted by the diminutive but dynamic Zolani Mahola, (who grew up in New Brighton, in PE) the band exudes a live performance energy that has been the bedrock of their success. The experienced rhythm section of Peter Cohen (drums) and Josh Hawks (bass) is complemented by guitarist Julio Sigauque, keyboardist Seredeal Scheepers, Simon Attwell (flute, mbira, sax and harmonica) and violinist Kyla Rose Smith. Tickets for the show are available from Computicket at R100 or will be available at the door for the same price. VIP tickets are also available at R180 and these can be purchased directly from Michelle Campbell on 072 997 3123. Members of the public attending the cricket will be given a R30 discount at the door, when they produce their cricket ticket. Doors open at 5pm and the main act will be on stage around 7pm.

Algoa FM’s presenters prepping for Back to School ALGOA FM’s presenters are once again prepping for the first day of school as they hit several intersections in a bid to collect as much school attire to assist the less privileged children in the community. Presenters will have found welcoming scholars across Algoa FM’s broadcast area from 6:30am until 8am today, Wednesday, January 21. “Going back to school is an exciting time for many parents and children, but for some this experience is cumbersome as many children in our region do not have decent school attire. As a result children dread their first day of school,” said PRO of Community Chest, Colette Theron. The presenters will collect donations of school clothing and shoes, and even cash dona-
tions at intersections. In return, presenters provide a gift of stationery for each donation. All clothing and cash donations collected will be given to Community Chest who will distribute it to communities in need. Kaycee Rossouw and Briony Sparg will collect at the corner of Stanford Road and Aubrey Street; Wayne Hart and Lauren Mungur at the intersection of Main Road and 14th Avenue in Walmer and Herman Tefo at the corner of Ferguson Road and Mati Road in New Brighton. ) If you missed the Algoa FM presenters at the intersection, you can still deliver your donations of school attire to Community Chest at 35 Clyde Street, Central or contact Colette Theron on 041 582 1592.

The new-look SA side, which included more than a dozen new caps, took on the European team in a four-match series at Queensmead Stadium from January 5 to 9. Phillips debuted in Monday’s clash, with Cairncross following the next day. Both went on to play in three of the four fixtures. Although the energetic but inexperienced SA side lost the series, they dominated in the fourth and final test to take a 3-2 win. SA are currently ranked 12th in the world, while Austria lie 23rd in the international standings. Phillips and Cairncross were full of enthusiasm following their test debut. “We had been training for three days before the first game, so I was quite tired and nervous but once the adrenaline kicked in and the excitement took over, I was raring to go,” said Phillips. The 25-year-old striker said it was an honour to represent SA. “The first test was a big step for me; it was about building my future and proving myself for the next test. In the last game I scored my first international goal, which was the highlight of the week for me.” The third-year NMMU law student said the team had created an encouraging environment for the new players. His selection reconfirmed his determination to pursue a professional playing career, after an injury put paid to a promising two-year stint in the English and Spanish leagues. The East London-born player then relocated to PE and enrolled at NMMU. “I continued playing hockey for the Madibaz for the love of the game, but I was ready to call it quits on my hockey career at this point because of my injury.” His return to full fitness with the Madibaz allowed Phillips to hold onto his dream and he aspires to become a fixture in the national team as they attempt to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games. “I want to earn as many caps as possible and prove myself for the Olympic team.” His teammate Cairncross has similar ambitions for 2016 and beyond. “I really hope I’m chosen to play in the next test so I can work towards achieving my Olympic goals.” The 21-year-old said his international debut test had been a big learning curve. “At this level, it’s not just about playing hockey. It’s about tactics and mental strength and preparation as well as physical conditioning.” The midfielder said the highlight of the series was winning the final game. “It was a really good team environment. The coach tried to put as little pressure on us youngsters as possible, which definitely helped on the field.” PE-born Cairncross said that playing for NMMU had prepared him well. “Playing for Madibaz is a lot of fun and I think enjoyment is a big part of being successful.” The third-year psychology student said his university team and coach were very encouraging. “Our club really supports the players and tries to help them achieve national success.” NMMU Madibaz hockey manager, Cheslyn Gie said the university was delighted to have two of their players join the SA team.

With previous winners including open water swimming Hall of Fame legend Bulgarian Petar Stoychev and Slovenian Olympic swimmer Rok Kerin, this 5km swim starts and finishes on Pollok Beach and sees participants swimming 2.5km directly out to sea to round the nautical buoy and returning along the same route. Unpredictable weather, strong currents (particularly over the reef near the buoy) and the fear factor of swimming over more than 30 different species of shark are just some of the things which make the Bellbuoy Challenge appealing to open water campaigners Around 100 swimmers from around South Africa are expected to take up the challenge. The swim encourages the traditional open wa-
ter swimming rules of participants taking part in just a Speedo costume but also makes provision for a wetsuit category; however, the bulk of the R21 000 in prize money is offered to the Speedo category. Unique Bellbuoy trophies, constructed from wire and beads by a local Walmer crafter, are offered the overall costume and wetsuit swimmers plus the age group winners in the 40-50, 50-60 and 60+ age groups (both male and female). All participants are required to be competent open water ocean swimmers and may be accompanied by a second on a paddle craft throughout the event to assist with navigation. Online entries are available on www.bellbuoychallenge.co.za with late entries and an increased entry fee coming into effect from February 1 until entries close on Wednesday, February 18. A welcome function and the collection of race kits will be held at News Café (Boardwalk) on Friday, February 20. The oldest finisher of the Challenge to date

IRONMAN 70.3 kicks off in East London this Sunday claiming a top five finish at the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. Another exciting athlete in the field is former champion, Bart Aernouts. The Belgian was the 2013 champion and was in East London in 2014 to defend his title before he was struck by illness, forcing him to withdraw on the morning of the race. The SA pair of Kyle Buckingham and Matt Trautman cannot be discounted both having claiming their first Ironman titles in 2014. Jodie Swallow will be aiming for an unprecedented fifth consecutive title in East London and with her record will again come into the race as the undeniable favourite. Swallow will face her biggest competition from Lucie Reed who gave her the closest race in her four-year domination when she finished second in 2014. Susie Cheetham, better known as Susie Hignett, also returns to East London. The tough Brit is well accustomed to the tough Standard Bank Ironman 70.3 South Africa course and local conditions having raced in East London in 2012 and 2013. Making her first appearance at the Standard Bank Ironman 70.3 South Africa is American athlete, Sarah Piampiano. Piampiano will come into the race as something of an unknown quantity but with some impressive podium finishes at Ironman 70.3 races in Chile and the United States, she is not an athlete to take lightly. Flying the flag for SA in the professional ladies’ field is Lynette Van Der Merwe, Riana Robertson, Andrea Steyn and Jeanni Seymour.
IT’S nearly time for Africa’s biggest triathlon, the Standard Bank Ironman 70.3 South Africa which takes place on Sunday, January 25, at Orient Beach, East London. Not only is it the biggest, it is also the most popular triathlon having sold out in under three months. Amongst the glittering array of the 32 professional triathlon stars, 3 000 athletes will be coming from over 17 different countries. Thousands of supporters are expected to line up along the course to be part of the excitement of race day. All eyes will once again be on defending champions, James Cunnama and Jodie Swallow. The tri couple made it a dream double win in East London in January 2014 with Cunnama winning his first ever title in SA and Swallow winning her fourth consecutive Ironman 70.3 SA title. The pair will again look for early season wins to add to their impressive records. Cunnama will come up against the likes of 2014 runner-up, Will Clarke from Great Britain, along with rising SA star, Stuart Marais, who finished fourth in 2014. Marais recently won his first Ironman 70.3 title in 2014 at Ironman 70.3 Pescara, Italy. Clarke ran Cunnama very close in 2014 and will be looking for the win in January. Frenchman, Cyril Viennot, makes a return to East London after a year disrupted by injury. Despite his injury setbacks, he finished 2014 strongly by

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE
New rules, new looks, new faces IN less than two months Melbourne will become the epicentre for start of the 2015 Formula 1 season. As with its predecessors there is much to be excited about for the new season. If you found the 2014 aesthetics unpleasing and plain awkward you weren’t alone. Mercifully a tweak to the aero rules for the nose section means that the hideous duckbills and anteaters have been consigned to the scrap heap. Visually the majority of the field will have a relatively uniform look for the nose section of the car and it does constrict some of the eccentric individuality seen last year. Nevertheless, there is little doubt that most will be happy to have far better looking cars to ogle. For the sites that Formula 1 will visit the FIA has announced a twenty race calendar with a highly anticipated visit to Mexico City in late October. As predicted the Korean Grand Prix loses its spot on the calendar while the German Grand Prix will again be hosted at the Hockenheimring for 2015. Even though the deal struck with Bernie Ecclestone back in 2006 specifies an annual rotation between Hockenheim and the Nurburgring the latter’s change of ownership has left it in financial difficulty and without a deal in place for the coming season. While safety is paramount in F1 the Safety Car periods have, on occasion, been far too
long. It has been mainly lapped cars which have been the culprit in these long-winded intermissions. The FIA has shown some common sense by announcing that the Safety Car will no longer wait for lapped cars to catch the rear of the field before resuming the race. Along with a far more visually pleasing sport there will also be three rookies on the grid. Sauber has confirmed that Brazilian Felipe Nasr will be partnering with Marcus Ericsson for 2015. Nasr gained valuable seat time in F1 last year as the official test driver for the Williams team and he graduates to Formula 1 with a pretty solid CV. Nasr has won both the Formula BMW and British Formula Three championships before finishing third overall in last year’s GP2 campaign. It’s no secret that he comes with substantial financial backing from Banco do Brasil which is much needed by a struggling Sauber team. Nevertheless, Nasr is a real talent and it’s more than worth it to keep an eye on his progress. At one stage it appeared as if Carlos Sainz Jnr’s introduction to Formula 1 would have to wait a few more years. The son of former double rally world champion Carlos Sainz was on course to be fast-tracked to F1 but he lost out to Russian driver Daniil Kvyat. It proved to be a momentary delay as Sebastian Vettel’s departure to Ferrari meant a promotion to the Red Bull team for Kvyat. This in
turn opens the door for Sainz Jnr to slot into the vacant Toro Rosso seat. However, it will be his Toro Rosso teammate who will undoubtedly carry the biggest weight of expectation of all the rookies in the field. Max Verstappen is the son of the not-sosuccessful former F1 driver Jos Verstappen. But that isn’t what makes his debut so spectacular. Instead, it’s the fact that when Max Verstappen takes to the starting grid in Australia he will be seventeen years old. He will be the youngest driver ever to compete in the sport and probably the first, should he score a podium, who cannot legally have a sip of the celebratory champagne. Verstappen’s racing biography is rather limited given his age but he nevertheless boasts some impressive wins including third place in last year’s European Formula Three championship. There are many who believe that if you’re fast enough you are old enough. To a degree this plays true but handling the pressure of Formula 1 is a big ask for someone so young. It is clear that Red Bull’s motorsport director Helmut Marko has no qualms about piling on the pressure and has already compared the youngster to the great Ayrton Senna. As grand and fiery as the Verstappen PR has been he is a bit of an anomaly. Either Max Verstappen is going to be the greatest thing since Lewis Hamilton or something else which time will inevitably tell.

Proteas really and truly in the pink THEY WERE dressed in pink, ladylike almost, but Hashim Amla’s Proteas certainly did not perform like the so-called weaker sex at Joburg’s Wanderers Stadium last Sunday as they took the West Indies by the throat and strangled them to win by 148 runs and lead the current ODI series 2-0. What’s more they did it with both bat and ball in spite of losing the toss and being asked to bat first. The unusual pink attire was a symbolic win too for cancer awareness, to which the South Africans no doubt were only too happy to dedicate their winning way. The match’s basic statistics alone graphically tell the one-sided tale: the Proteas 439 for 2 (Amla 153 not out, Rilee Rossouw 128, AB de Villiers 149). After a quiet start The West Indies in reply in their allotted 50 overs could manage only 291 – 148 runs behind. There was little fight-back by the West Indies though the stylish Ramden knocked up a solid 50, his sixth ODI half-

century, from 45 balls with 4 x fours and one six. But it became clear early on with the dismissal of big hitter, Chris Gayle, for 19 that this was not to be their day. DR Smith also caught the eye with a runa-ball 57. Otherwise, however, the West Indies cupboard was somewhat bare. The match chiefly was about the dominance of the Proteas’ and the outstanding batting of Amla with a knock that contained 14 fours and a six, while his opening partner, Rossouw, scooped his first century at this level. However, finally it was De Villiers’ whirlwind century, his 127 coming from just 31 balls – an ODI world record and the fastest overall in international cricket – that those who packed the Wanderers stands or watched it all on TV will remember most fondly. And, of course, there couldn’t possibly have been any other Man of the Match. When De Villiers came to the crease there were only 11 overs left. This was the ODI captain at the top of his game. As commentator, Mikey Holding, no mean
wielder of the willow in his West Indies days, put it: “In this sort of form AB is deadly. You got the feeling he would have found a shot for even your very best ball and sent it for four or a six. It’s a performance I’ll never-ever forget.” It was praise well deserved. De Villiers’ 127 came off just 44 balls. It took only 31 deliveries to rack up his century. Just 13 balls to reach his 50. “Going like as steamengine, a very smooth one,” said another of the commentary-box team. Then added: “Leaves you gasping, doesn’t it? The fastest century in the history of cricket!” The aplomb – sheer cheek – with which De Villiers executed some of his shots will live long in the memory of cricket fans. The cheek of some of them must have left the purists gasping. Again it was the commentary box’s Holding who couldn’t mask his incredulity. He gave a sort of cough-laugh. “They were just incredible, some of those shots. There’s no other way to describe them.” Now for No. 3!
