Strandfront fraai vir die feestyd

LHOEWEL die Baai se strande nie meer ’n blouvlagstatus het en Bayworld nie meer een van die stad se grootste toeriste-aantreklikhede is nie, is alles darem nie verlore vir die Baai se toeriste-attraksies nie met Koningstrand wat deesdae met ’n splinternuwe baadjie spog net reg vir die toeloop van vakansiegangers. Die opknapwerk aan die Baaise strandfront is byna voltooi en hou groot belofte vir die somervakansie in. Inwoners en besoekers aan die Baai sal die multimiljoenrand-projek aan die Baai se grootste toeristetrekpleister, sy strandfront, kan geniet.

Selfs die besoedelde varswatermeer by Koningstrand, waarin alge drie maande gelede begin groei het weens rioolbesoedeling, is aan die opklaar. Die wandelpaadjies, skaatsbane, speelparkies, piekniekplekke, opgeknapte en glashelder swembaddens en ’n buitelug-gimnasium maak alles deel uit van die projek en sal meebring dat die strandfront tot sy volle glorie herstel word. Dean Biddulph, DA-raadslid in wyk 2 (Somerstrand en Humewood), is positief dat die stad ’n goeie somerseisoen sal hê. Volgens hom is die R30 miljoen wat die projek tot dusver kos, ’n goeie belegging. “Die strandfront sal weer gewild word. Dit is asof dit ’n 180 gradedraai gemaak het. Ek is uiters tevrede met die werk tot dusver. “Dit is net jammer dat die Humewood-strand deur die onlangse reën beskadig is, maar ons

het baie ander mooi strande.” Volgens Biddulph dink hulle selfs daaraan om ’n nagmark op die been te bring. Die McArthur-swembad, wat verlede jaar ’n groot kopseer vir die Nelson Mandelabaai-metropool was, sprankel weer. Die metro het ’n maand-totmaand ooreenkoms met ’n kontrakteur onderteken vir die huur en instandhouding van die swembad, wat ook die huur van ’n restaurant langs die swembad insluit. Die tweede fase van die multimiljoenrand-opknapprojek, wat deur die Mandelabaai-ontwikkelingsagentskap behartig word, sal binne weke voltooi wees. Die derde fase sal vroeg volgende jaar begin. Die derde fase behels die opknap van die parkeerterrein by Koningstrand en van die stormwaterstelsel, sowel as die skep van ’n vleiland by die grasperk.

Embattled mayor Wayile ‘will not surrender’ BETTIE GILIOMEE

EMBATTLED Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Zanoxolo Wayile, has vowed to “not surrender” despite regional executive members of the ANC, as well as from the official opposition, the DA, accusing him last week of poor leadership and mismanagement.

“We are not going to surrender; you can organise any army,” said a confident Wayile during a media conference last week Tuesday. This follows a sharp attack on him, as well as the acting municipal manager, Themba Hani, and the MEC for local government and traditional affairs, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, during a media briefing on Monday by the ANC regional executive committee led by regional chairman Nceba Faku. On Tuesday the DA submitted a mo-

tion of no confidence in Executive Mayor, Zanoxolo Wayile, for consideration at the Council meeting, which is scheduled for December 6, 2012. Wayile said that the focus must be on the work at hand and not political squabbles. He also accused the ANC’s regional leaders of obstructing all possible help that is being given to the metro. The DA said in their statement that as a result of Wayile’s “poor political leadership and ongoing mismanagement”, service delivery in the metro has reached an all-time low. Examples of this included service delivery protests which are now almost a weekly occurrence, his failure to eradicate the bucket system, the housing backlog which stands at 92 000, the increase in illegal dumping, no refuse collection services in most of the northern areas and an increase in backlogs in infrastructure maintenance with roads, water and electricity in danger of collapsing.

Groot skade is verhoed deur die direkteur van die kinderhuis, dr Crystal Watson, se seun, Cingean Watson, se vinnige optrede. “Hy was besig om sy venster oop te maak toe hy by die motorhuis verbyry. Genadiglik het hy die brandende rubber geruik en toe die rook sien uitkom by die motorhuis,” het Watson gesê. Hy het sy vriendin, Angelique Dalby, en jonger broer, Storm, wat saam met hom in die motor was gestuur om brandblussers by die oord se huise te gaan haal en toe self begin om die vlamme in die motorhuis dood te slaan. “Toevallig is die brandblussers Vrydag versien. Dis ook die Here se werk, want dit was nie veronderstel om Vrydag

volgemaak te word nie,” het Watson gesê. Die bussie is uit die motorhuis getrek en die smeulende voorkant van die voertuig is geblus. Dele van die bussie se linkerkant het gesmelt en die hele bussie was vol roet. “Gelukkig kon die vuur geblus word voor dit na die motorhuis langsaan versprei het. Daar was twee bakkies geparkeer en ook heelwat ander toerusting. Dit wat wel in die slag gebly het, was grassnyers, grasrandsnyers, stoele en ’n houer met petrol,” het Watson gesê. “Die brandweer het ons onmiddellik kom help. Hulle het gesê as die vuur ’n minuut langer kans gehad het om te woed, die minibus sou ontplof het. Die kinderhuis sou dalk afgebrand het en ook huise van die aftree-oord langsaan,” het Watson gesê. Met behulp van beeldmateriaal wat met sekerheidskameras opgeneem is, is vasgestel dat die brand deur een van die kinderhuis se kinders gestig is. PE Express het ook die beeldmateriaal gesien gehad en ’n mens kon sien hoe hy die bussie vol petrol spuit.

“Ons vermoed hy het die petrol uit een van die grassnyers gesuig en dit toe in ’n botteltjie gegooi,” het Watson gesê. Hierdie insident het plaasgevind terwyl die ander kinders reeds op pad kerk toe was en die tweede groep gewag het vir hulle rygeleentheid. Daar word vermoed dat die kind ongeveer 45 minute lank doenig was in die motorhuis voor die brand begin het. Watson beskryf die voorval as ’n tragedie. “Ons is reeds in soveel finansiële moeilikheid en weet nie wat die versekering gaan betaal nie.” Daar bly 100 kinders by MTR Kinderhuis en daar moet elke dag na 18 skole gery word om hulle af te laai. Die kinders moes ook berading kry na die voorval, het Watson gesê. Die kind is deur MTR Smit na die hof geneem, maar volgens Watson is hulle weggewys, aangesien die kind te jonk is. ’n Saak van brandstigting word deur die polisie ondersoek.

Syndicate target manhole covers ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL MANHOLE covers are becoming the latest target of scrapmetal thieves - and this action is causing great distress for residents in the Mill Park and Newton Park areas. A syndicate is allegedly responsible for the latest rise in manhole cover theft, according to Ward 6 DA Councillor, Retief Odendaal. “The councillors’ offices are indundated with calls from residents re-

porting stolen manhole and sewerage covers. We have already reported the matter to SAPS, but urgent intervention is needed to reinstate the missing manhole covers as the open manholes are extremely dangerous,” said Odendaal. He added that this action is costing the municipality a lot of money as one manhole cover could cost up to a few hundred rand. “The thieves sell these covers to scrapmetal dealers for a measly R20 to R25 rand, and it costs the municipality double that amount to replace them.”

Odendaal said action needs to be taken against unscrupulous scrapmetal dealers who buy these covers which are clearly marked as NMBM property. Ward 7 DA Councillor Chris Roberts said that policing is a major problem as the dedicated Police Unit consists of two people who cover the Metro. “Since approximately two weeks ago we have experienced an unprecedented wave of manhole-cover thefts. During one night alone 12 covers were stolen down the middle of Linton

Road, Mill Park, and a total of 25 covers was stolen in the area over two days,” said Roberts. He added that in Newton Park large storm water grids were stolen all over the suburb during approximately the same period. “This same scenario is massively out of control across the entire Metro. It is obvious that a syndicate is at work, methodically stripping the Metro’s assets and costing the ratepayers millions. According to the police there are 15 major scrapyards in PE that export scrap metal in large ship-

ping containers. There are approximately 70 scrapyards, large, small and many informal ones collecting scrap metal in total,” Roberts said. “The scale of exporting is vast. It is very difficult to arrest the export of stolen metal, as customs will only open shipping containers for inspection under specific conditions. In short, the Metro and its ratepayers are being bled dry by the unscrupulous buyers of obviously stolen Metro property. It is akin to economic sabotage of the financial hub of the Province.”

Bakkie is new bone of contention in Richmond Hill watch saga TINNEKE GOEDHALS FIVE months after the dispute between the Richmond Hill community and the Humewood CPF started, a vote of no confidence against John Preller, the Humewood Crime Prevention Forum chairperson, and three of his executive committee members - Tania Burnner, Annelise Jerling and Dave Moorhouse - was accepted at a Richmond Hill Sector Crime Forum meeting on November 7. This follows on the latest bone of contention in the Richmond Hill Neighbourhood saga – a bakkie bought by members of the community to patrol the area, after Preller and the Humewood SAPS took away the I-Patrol vehicle the forum used before the suspension of the forum’s chairperson, Alan Mounter. Community representatives from

the RHSCF and the Richmond Hill Residents’ Association (RHA) in the meantime provided documentation to the investigating officer to prove nothing fraudulent was done and that there was no criminal intent in the process of purchasing the bakkie. Port Elizabeth Express has been informed that Preller has since laid another four fraud charges against four other executive committee members. Preller also prohibited Robert Brewers (former chairperson of the RHSCF) from doing neighbourhood watch patrols in the vehicle that the community bought themselves. “With regard to the motion of no confidence the community does not believe that it can work with the CPF as it believes it clearly does not have the interests of Richmond Hill at heart; otherwise a more concerted effort would have been made on their part to resolve the dispute,” said Jonathan Mercer, RHSCF acting

chairperson. Mercer is now acting chairperson after Robert Brewers stood down. In an open letter to Preller after the motion of no confidence was accepted, the community stated that they have resorted to the open letter as a result of Preller’s continued passive refusal to communicate directly with them, or to respond to any of their correspondence, or to take a leadership role in ending the dispute so that they can move forward in their fight against crime to make Richmond Hill a clean and safe neighbourhood to live and work in. “Look around you, Mr Preller. Richmond Hill is undergoing major revitalisation and it is not the community it was five years ago when the criminals freely roamed the streets. This improvement has

happened as a result of the resolve of the community to make a difference in our fight against crime and to ‘claim back’ our area and investor confidence in the area.” The letter further states that Preller must explain why he is so intent on pressing “frivolous criminal charges” against five members of the community because of the bakkie they purchased with their money, to clean up their community and to be used for neighbourhood watch patrols to keep the area safe. They cannot see what purpose will be served by prosecuting individuals who have sacrificed a significant amount of time, effort and money to

make the RHSCF the success it is, especially since no crime was committed. The same open letter that was sent to Preller was also forwarded to Gen. Dawie Rabie who responded that intervention by Safety and Liaison should be arranged and that this matter must be resolved. On Monday Preller said he was not in a position to comment as the case is still pending and sub judice. “When brought to court and until the court take their decision I am unable to say anything,” said Preller. He further said this debacle is very disturbing and “we need to put this thing together”.

Kitchen Maestro competition hots up Semi-finals on Saturday and grand finale on Sunday at Walmer Park Shopping Centre THE fourth cook-off in the Walmer Park’s first Kitchen Maestro was held on Saturday with contestants preparing Pan Fried Line Fish on Sweetcorn Fritter with a Lemon Butter Sauce. Cooking away the fifth spot for the semi-finals last Saturday, was Alwina Zahn. She will now compete with the other semi-finalists,

Liza Vermaak, Jaco Vermaak, Elke Gerber and Stephanie Nortje in the semi-final cook-off this Saturday. The contestants will compete for one of two places in the Kitchen Maestro grand finale which will take place at the annual Walmer Park Food Fair this Sunday (November 25). The winner will walk away with prizes to the value of R25 000.

Pan Fried Line Fish on Sweetcorn Fritter with a Lemon Butter Sauce DURING Saturday’s last cook-off in Walmer Park’s Kitchen Maestro competition, contestants had to prepare Pan Fried Line Fish on Sweetcorn Fritter with a Lemon Butter Sauce Pan Pan fried fried fish fish ingredients ingredients 150g line fish Canola oil ¼ tsp. chopped garlic 30ml white wine Salt and black pepper 100ml cream Chopped parsley butter ½ lemon Salt Black pepper Pan Pan fried fried fish fish method method Season the fish with salt and pepper. Fry the fish on both sides, with a little bit of canola oil till almost done. Remove fish from pan and keep aside.

Lightly fry garlic in the same pan then deglaze with white wine. Add the cream and reduce by half. Add parsley and stir in a big blob of butter. Squeeze in lemon juice and season to taste. Finish the fish in another pan and melt a bit of butter over the fish, before serving. Sweetcorn Sweetcorn fritters fritters ingredients ingredients 215g tin sweetcorn 4 tbsp. cake flour ½ tsp. baking powder Good pinch of salt Sweetcorn Sweetcorn fritters fritters method method Mix together all ingredients to form a batter. (crumpet consistency) Heat a non-stick pan with canola oil over medium heat. Place a well-greased ring in your pan; place enough of the batter in the ring to go up 1cm of the side of the ring. Remove the ring when batter has set. Fry till golden brown on both sides.

DF Malherbe host Swiss students

A GROUP of two teachers and 12 students from CIFOM-ET école technique in Le Locle, Switzerland, visited Port Elizabeth for two weeks in October. Organizers Derick Alberts and Erika Ferreira, both from Khwezi Lomso High School in Zwide, have shared a close relationship with CIFOM since 2006 and together with Penny Vosloo from DF Malherbe

made it possible for the group to become part of the DF Malherbe family. The group was hosted by families and teachers from the school where they attend classes and functions. As DF started two years ago to also enrol English-speaking learners, the French-speaking Swiss students could adapt to the timetable. Other activities included visits to NMMU, Volkswagen, Sea View Lion Park, Addo Elephant Park and a

Township Tour. They contributed to the local economy at various shopping malls, Art and Craft centres and restaurants. The group made special mention of the friendliness and hospitality they received everywhere and took positive memories of Port Elizabeth back to Switzerland. Future exchange programmes between the two schools are definitely on the cards.

TWO young Westering High School junior debaters made their way to New Brighton to participate in the National Book Week Debate recently. This was an event organised by the government. Westering High was placed joint first out of six other schools. Westering debaters, Farrah van Willing and Alia Cassim, the victors, were given the honour of meeting the author and South African Police spokesperson,

McIntosh Polela, who also signed their copies of his book. The book “My Father, My Monster” by McIntosh Polela is about his hardship growing up. He found out that his father killed his mother but subsequently met with his father to forgive him. The debate was based on themes chosen from the book, as well as how the learners would have reacted in his situation.

‘The Ultimate Latin Party’ is back

TWOTONE Music’s popular show, Tequila! The Ultimate Latin Party, is back for one night only on December 1 to kick off the festive season with a live 8-piece band and singers at Summerwood Primary School in 2nd Avenue, Summerstrand.

The vibrant party show enjoyed a sold out run in 2009 and TwoTone regulars have been requesting a reprise ever since. The band is led by director Ulagh Williams (keyboards and vocals) and features some of the Bay’s top musos such as SAMRO music ambassador Creshwell October (guitar), veteran Latin muso Ema Angileri (bass) and seasoned TwoTone show regular Devon van Rooyen (drums and percussion). Adding some fiery Latin brass sounds will be the Bandstand Boys, recently featured in TwoTone’s Tuxedo Club shows. The flashy brass section includes internationally renowned trombonist Kyle Du Preez, local band master and musical theatre stalwart Marlon Louis on trumpet and the vibrant Andrea Morris on saxophone and backing vocals. Fronting the band will be singer and showman Brinley Yon who recently wowed audiences with his zany stage antics in the Tuxedo Club series. This time, he swops his tux for a fedora and some suave Latin footwork. The band will play a wide variety of Latin favourites from artists such as Los Lobos, Ricky Martin, Carlos Santana, Lou Bega, Enrique Iglesias, Gloria Estefan, The Gipsy Kings and many more. The dance floor will stay open until late and seating is unreserved and restaurant style. Patrons are invited to bring their own eats and make use of the available bar facility. The Fire Night 01, presented by the Uniting in Christ (UIC) student group of St Thomas Senior Secondary is happening on December 12 at the St Thomas Senior Secondary School’s Auditorium, from 6pm-10pm. “The event is held as a fundraising effort to take youths on camps where they will be equipped with skills, such as counselling services,” said Laverne Gadiah, one of the organisers.

“Peers have a better impact, so we want to equip young people with spiritual training to support others,” Gadiah said. The organisers emphasised that the Fire Night is inter-denominational. “This is a God thing, not a church thing. Everyone is welcome to come and unite in Christ,” said organiser Reeze Telling. The programme includes some of the best dance groups in Port Elizabeth, such as Revolution 03. There will also be a coffee bar, cooldrinks and wors rolls on sale. Bonsai Society showcase their trees THERE will be over 120 trees to see at the annual Eastern Province Bonsai Societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s show this year, which will be held at Sherwood Nursery, Walker Drive, on December 1 and 2. A variety of bonsai styles will be showcased. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At one stage, all trees were designed on the oriental lines, but now our very own African Styles, Pierneef and Baobab to mention two, have put South Africa on the International Bonsai Map,â&#x20AC;? said Jenny Shute (EPBS public relations officer). Jenny added that the orient Bonsai artists concentrate more on the classical style of trees. In South Africa there are, however, so many indigenous trees which can be successfully and uniquely made into Bonsais, that they are the envy of overseas artists. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bonsai in Africa certainly has come a long way, since those early days when everyone had the same kind of trees. It was an honour when our indigenous Bonsai styles were acknowledged world wide,â&#x20AC;? said

Shute. The Eastern Province Bonsai Society, which is 43 years old, aims to promote South African Bonsai Styles which have now been accepted internationally. They currently have 75 members with the oldest member being over 80 years and the youngest 14 years of age. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bonsai are treesâ&#x20AC;Śnot pot plants, which is the biggest mistake commonly made by people. When acquiring a Bonsai they wonder why the tree dies on their office window sill or coffee table,â&#x20AC;? said Shute. Show times are from 9am to 5pm daily with demo shows at 11am for 12.30pm and 2.30pm on Saturday, December 1, and a demo show on Sunday at 11am and 12.30pm. Trees, tools, wire, pots, stands and fertilizers will be for sale. The public can stand the chance to win a Bonsai tree in a raffle. Entrance fee for adults is R10 and R5 for children under 12 years. Photo: SUPPLIED PE EXPRESS REPORTER THE Christmas Market that is held every year in the Walmer Town Hall will be celebrating its 21st anniversary when it is held from tomorrow, (Thursday) until Saturday. Marlene Lategan started the craft market in 1991 when her late husband, Stefan Engelbrecht, was transferred from Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth to take on the position of Advertising Manager at the former Die Oosterlig newspaper.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Other than Art in the Park, PE didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any other markets and I saw the need for a Christmas Market. I organised the first market at my home in Walmer Heights. It was a great success and the following year I hired the Walmer Library Hall. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Soon this hall was also too small and we relocated to the Walmer Town Hall where the market is still held every year,â&#x20AC;? said Marlene. A total of 50 crafters will exhibit their work this year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What makes this market so unique is the fact that most of the

crafts are handcrafted items which range from pewter work, recycled glass, beadwork, Christmas decorations, paintings, Christmas cakes, embroidery and handmade teddies to ceramics, candles, handmade soap, and more. A coffee shop serving cakes and light meals will also be available. Every year a contribution is made to a charity organisation from the proceeds of the market. The Christmas Market will be held tomorrow from 2pm to 7pm, on Friday from 9am to 7pm and on Saturday from 8.30am to 2pm.

'n Anderhalf uur later was hulle in Simonstad. Die vriendelike personeel het hom genooi om voor by hulle in die lokomotief te staan om te sien hoe die trein werk en selfs die fluitjie te blaas. Die gesin en vrywilligers het toe afgesit na die lieflike Café Pescado-restaurant vir pizzas en melkskommels. Jared het behoorlik weggelê aan die lekker kos en tot vermaak van die Rotaracters selfs 'n paar danspassies uitgevoer. Hy en sy sussie kon selfs met deeg en koekiedrukkers hul eie koekies uitdruk, wat toe vir hulle gebak en saamgegee is. Hierna is die spannetjie met die stoomtrein terug stad toe. Jared kon weer voor staan en kyk hoe stoom die lug inblaas. In die stad aangekom, het die Rotaracters Jared met 'n LeapPad en 'n treinstel verras en sy sussie met 'n stel Barbie-popklere bederf. Dié dag kon Jared werklik die vreugde van kindwees ervaar en prettige goed doen, 'n ervaring wat hom selde beskore is. Hy en sy gesin kon vir 'n slag net ontspan en van al hul ontberinge vergeet. Only three more days to enter your baby BETTIE GILIOMEE PARENTS have only until 4pm this Friday (November 23) to enter their baby to become this year’s PE Express Frontpage Christmas Baby. The annual PE Express Christmas Baby Competition is aimed at making the day even more special for babies who are celebrating their first Christmas. Their photo will appear on the front page of the last edition of PE Express for the year, on December 19. To accommodate babies who are not celebrating their first Christmas but who could not enter last year since they were born only after the closing date of last year’s competition, entries will be accepted from all babies born from November 25, 2011 (last year’s closing date of the competition). Babies must be resident in Port Elizabeth. To enter, parents must send a RECENT colour jumbo-size photograph of their baby with the completed entry form, which can be downloaded from our website (www.pe-express.co.za) or can be obtained from our offices. The entry form must be pasted on the back of the photo. Entries must reach our offices in the Ton Vosloo Media Centre, Ivor Benn Close (off William Moffett Expressway) in Fairview before 4pm on Friday, November 23. No e-mailed entries will be accepted. Computer printouts or photos larger or smaller than jumbo size will also not be accepted. Parents can enter any recent photo for the competition. Holiday Club gets kids into the swim for summer WATER safety is a critical consideration as the festive season break approaches. As families spend their days in the swimming pool or at the beach, both caution and swimming skill are important for a happy summer. Especially children are vulnerable and awareness alone is not enough. To aid child water safety â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and to prepare youngsters for a summer near the water, qualified swimming instructor Lerryn Mew runs a swimming Holiday Club from Monday to Saturday (10 to 15 December) for children between the ages of two and 16 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; with a bit of space reserved for adults as well. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Every year, just as the school holidays start, I run a Holiday Club,â&#x20AC;? says Mew, the owner of Bubbles Swim School. â&#x20AC;&#x153;During the week-long course the swimmers learn basic to advanced swimming skills depending on their ability, basic first aid and water rescue as well as basic CPR for the older children.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are also games that we play and an opportunity for the parents to swim with their children on the final day. Swimming is a vital life skill, especially when living at the coast.â&#x20AC;? For 2012 the Holiday Club will be different from the norm. Currently the youngest participant taking part in the Crickley Kids’ Beach Run is McKenzie Miller, who is only 18 months old. Around 70% of the field are 6 years and under which bodes well for the Series, which is striving to promote a healthy family lifestyle. Despite a nominal entry fee of just R20 for the Series members, the kids receive cool refreshment from Tsitsikamma Crystal on completion of the run, a medal from Crowhurst & Bond Optometrists and a complimentary photograph by Sport Action Photography from Zports, the event organisers. This coming weekend, Bokkie our rugby mascot, will be taking part in the Series as a joint promotion with Zports to promote the upcoming Rugby 7’s event and the city’s Super Rugby next year. For the older kids and adults, the Ocean Racing Series also includes the Dis-Chem 1km and 2km Ocean Swims, which last weekend attracted over 260 participants between the ages of 9 years (Zachary Jacobs – 1km swim) and 78 years (Rob Connacher – 2km swim). For those not into the swimming scene, there is the About IT 5km Beach Run and the 5km Beach Walk, with a further 150 odd tackling the beach events over the past weekend. A huge growth was seen in the 5km Beach Walk, particularly amongst the ladies who outnumbered the men 4:1, ranging in age from 11 years through to 66 years.

Key triathlon without sponsor

The popular Triathlon Summer Series is struggling to secure the necessary naming sponsor ahead of the opening of the season and has delayed the opening of entries. Unique in that it consists of three exciting sprint distance triathlons open to teams and individuals, the Series is scheduled for 16th, 23rd and 26th December. Initially the 16th was scheduled for Knysna but this has been changed to Port Elizabeth following the recent suspension of the Knysna Tourism CEO. Two exciting and different routes are planned for the Port Elizabeth legs whilst the traditional St Francis Boxing Day leg on the 16th, which attracts over 300 participants, may have to be moved from the Port, given the current condition of roads in the area. Looking for the perfect peach CRITICS, specially romantic critics – those who confuse reality with the William Webb-Ellis myth of how the young renegade at Rugby School “picked up the ball and ran” – consistently forget a fundamental maxim of the 15-man game. Simply put, it is this – you only play as well as your opponents allow. Add to this the fickleness of South African rugby fans and it’s as clear as can be that anyone who coaches the Springbok rugby team has a problem – so he had better come prepared with a very thick skin. Heyneke Meyer, who has had just fewer than a dozen matches in charge of our rugby fortunes, has certainly found that out in spades. When he was elected to succeed the ever-unpredictable Peter de Villiers, there wasn’t a single dissenting voice among serious critics of the game. His elevation to the post was greeted with almost Messiah-like reverence. But it hasn’t taken long for the dissenters’ voices to kick in. The way they tell it, he should be given his marching orders now – if not sooner. So where do we go from here? Granted the Boks’ 21-10 defeat of Scotland at Murrayfield last weekend was anything but clinical. It was almost the exact reverse of the 16-12 victory over Ireland the previous week, in which they produced a hapless first 40 minutes, followed by a much-improved second-half showing. True, after a stumbling second at Murrayfield, they looked almost lucky to scrape home. Though in fairness the Scots must be given some credit for that. After all, by the end of the

full 80 minutes, possession had swung to 60% in Scotland’s favour, with the Boks scrounging for the remaining 40%. However, rugby being the game it is – built on the overriding pillars of Attack and Defence – let’s give credit as well to the Boks’ defensive efforts. In this department the likes particularly of Willem Alberts, Francois Louw, Marcell Coetzee, Eben Etzebeth and captain Jean de Villiers helped the visitors put together more than 130 tackles: a tally incidentally that was almost double the number the Scots were called on deliver. South African fans should not forget that Meyer’s team, with an overload of injuries to established stars, is made up largely of youngsters, who he is hoping to take to the Englandhosted 2015 World Cup, as the finished product. That’s when what they produce against the auld enemy – New Zealand, who else? – will tell what sort of legacy Meyer has established for himself. Springbok rugby isn’t glamorous. It is not Australian rugby with its unpredictability, its flashes of brilliance. It is not French rugby with its daring, its champagne sparkle. Fickle fans should also not forget that the 44-0 (v Scotland 1951-52) and 68-10 (v Scotland 1997) were not so much the result of Springbok brilliance as a reflection of the poor standard of Scottish rugby of those years. Now for England, put in their place by 20 points to 14 by the Wallabies at Twickenham last week. Perhaps this Saturday Meyer’s team will manage to put together two halves of rugby fruit to produce something nearer a perfect peach of a performance. Let’s hope so.

The club is going off-road with its own mountain-biking trail, which will have direct access through the Hopewell nature reserve. It is proposed to have a reception facility in former stables on a property which forms part of the three thousand hectare Hopewell estate. The estate is one of South Africa’s only nature reserves with a residential component. Situated on the urban edge of the city, two kilometres off the Old Cape Road, and about a 15-minute drive from Newton Park, the reserve is easily accessible for a ride before or after work and at weekends. Members of the Masters and Ladies’ Cycling Club and their guests will be able to ride along 40 kilometres of existing single track trails, which will shortly be expanded to 90 kilometres of hiking and riding trails, according to developer Brian Corrigan.

KFC Mini-Cricket Festival a great success

THE Eastern Province Cricket Union hosted a KFC Mini-Cricket festival at St George’s Park on Friday, with over 700 boys and girls between the ages of 3 and 13 getting active on the cricket field. The kids that participated in the festival came in school teams with eight players per team. The teams then each played two games. The KFC Action Zones, which are inflatables that enable kids to improve their skills in a fun way, were stationed at the ground. But there was more to the day today than just cricket, said Lauren Turnbull, KFC CSI and Sponsorships Manager. “The best way to get a message across to kids is through other kids and with this in mind we have introduced a kids’ ambassador search this year. At each festival we set up an audition area to select kid ambassadors who will be used to promote our KFC Mini-Cricket message which is to encourage kids to get active and get into KFC Mini-Cricket,” she said. KFC partnered with Cricket South Africa

(CSA) in 2010 with the aim of reaching as many children as possible and to promote an active and balanced lifestyle. The 2011/12 season saw the programme grow by 20%, double the target set, so there are now over 100 000 kids actively involved. “This season we will ensure that we maintain and improve the quality of cricket played by the children and will continue to encourage enrolment. A main focus for this season will be the growth of KFC Mini-Cricket into rural communities,” said Niels Momberg, Youth Cricket Manager at CSA. AB De Villiers has been an ambassador of KFC Mini-Cricket since 2010 and is an inspiration to the kids involved. “Everyone needs an introduction into a particular sport and we couldn’t ask for a better way than to be involved in KFC Mini-Cricket. I believe this season will entice even more kids into the programme and I bet it will unearth some characters as ambassadors. I will have to work hard to keep my position as the ambassador,” De Villiers said.

Hopewell is the most accessible fenced and secure wilderness area for riders based in Port Elizabeth and provides a safe and ecofriendly environment for the cyclist to get back in touch with nature,” said Ehlers. Wat sy uitleg betref, het VW se witjasse netjies gesit en dink wat die teikenmark wil hê.Dit is om dié rede dat hulle die luikdeur in twee seksies ontwerp het: Die boonste deel swaai na bo oop, en die onderste deel val na onder oop. Volkswagen wil nou kyk wat die mark se reaksie op sy konsepmodel is voordat hy die finale kopknik vir die projek gaan gee.

Die Taigun is nog net ’n konsepmodel, maar dit is duidelik dat VW uit die vuis dink en die jongste giere van die mark goed lees. Die huidige smaak en grootste groeisegment wêreldwyd is dié vir kompakte nutsbuksies – amperse 4x4’s wat ’n lekker sakpasgrootte het vir maklik in die stad en in die voorstede kerjakker, maar ook met ’n sportnutsvoertuig se goeie grondvryhoogte en ekstra bakbekleding as jy die naweek op ’n grondpad moet gaan ry. Die hoë ryposisie dra daartoe by dat vroulike kopers, die teikenmark van dié segment en die grootste kopers daarvan, veiliger voel in hul klein voertuig. Ook bied dit goeie sig reg rondom in druk verkeer, en die sig en die kompakte lyfie saam help wanneer jy in die stad in smal ruimtes moet parkeer. Volkswagen wil nou hierdie roete volg met sy eie knaap, die Taigun. Die Taigun sal dus onder die bestaande Tiguan op die produkreeks inglip. Waar die Tiguan op die Golf se onderstel geskoei is, sal die nuwe Taigun die basis van die nuwe Up! kry om op te hardloop. Volkswagen besef die mark wat in die Taigun belang gaan stel, hou meer van pret en speel as van ernstige 4x4-ry of iets vaals soos ’n tradisionele driekompartement-sedan. Daarom sal die Taigun straks aanvanklik net as ’n driedeur te kry wees terwyl prettige, helder kleure die bakwerk sal opkikker. Die ander stukkie opwindende nuus met die Taigun se onthulling is VW se nuwe eenliter-petrolenjintjie. Dit is ’n driesilinder-oond en lewer 80 kW en 175 Nm wringkrag, wat heel billik is as jy na sy klein verplasing kyk. Ratskakeling geskied deur ’n sesganghandratkas.

Volkswagen sê die Taigun weeg net 985 kg, wat die piepklein enjin in staat stel om hom tot 186 km/h te laat voortdraf. Die versnelling van 0 tot 100 km/h geskied in 9.2 sekondes. Die baie belangrike verbruiksyfer (in die EUwêreld) kom amptelik op ’n baie skaflike 4,7 liter neer.
