More veld fires expected LOURENS SCHOEMAN

D

ESTRUCTIVE veld fires in the Eastern Cape coastal areas have hardly been contained, and now bush and veld fires are expected in the western and central areas of the province. According to the weather office in Port Elizabeth, the fires are expected to occur today from 11am to 7pm due to the little or no rain that has fallen in certain parts lately. “When there has been little or no rain for long periods of time, and then warm, dry winds start to blow, veld and forest fires can easily arise and spread very quickly,” said Hugh van Niekerk, regional manager of the weather office. He pointed out that no fires should be made in the open air and fires should not be left unmanned. “Please do not throw cigarette stumps out of cars or in the veld. “It is also important that empty bottles are not thrown or left in the veld, as these can focus the rays of the sun which can burn vegetation and allow veld fires to start,” said Van Niekerk. Where large fires occur, it is important that it is reported immediately and that people will move away from the area concerned and leave it to the trained personnel to fight the fires. “Never pour water on a fire caused by an electric fault, oil or paraffin lamps. In this case sand or a blanket should be used to extinguish the fire. “The orders of disaster management must be respected at all times,” added Van Niekerk. The devastating fires in the Eastern Cape coastal area have caused hundreds of millions of rands’ damage in the municipal areas of

Kouga and Nelson Mandela recently. A total of 60% of the Longmore plantation, as well as the sawmill, were destroyed by the flames.

The Department of Social Development has been in the process of determining the damage that occurred on farms as well as the needs of those affected by the fires.

The Thornhill Farmers Association is also in the process of determining damage and believes that the process will take time to complete.

Pay traffic fines or face arrest REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has warned everyone with outstanding traffic fines to either appear in court or pay the fine before the specified date. Failure to do so will result in a warrant of arrest being issued. This, after reckless statements encouraging the public not to pay their fines, surfaced resulting in a huge impact on the legal processes of the municipality in which hundreds and thousands of fines have not been paid. Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki said that currently only 25% of the people who have received fines or summons to appear in court have actually paid their fines or appeared in court. “To date a staggering R54,8 million of outstanding warrants have not been paid, relating to approximately 64 000 outstanding cas-

es and more than R347 million of unpaid fines, 1.1 million cases in total – which excludes warrant-related cases – are currently registered in the system. “These have not yet been converted to warrants and accordingly the public can still pay them or appear in court on the said court dates stipulated in the fines.” Mniki added that the municipality has engaged with the National Department of Transport to implement the Natis Block on relicensing vehicles, meaning that vehicle owners with outstanding warrants will not be able to relicense their motor vehicles until the outstanding warrants have been settled. “As means of ensuring lawlessness and safety, the Traffic Department in conjunction with the Metro Police will be manning roadblocks over the next three months. Any person stopped who has a warrant of arrest outstanding will be arrested and brought before

court.” The following fines have been increased with immediate effect: 1. Driving a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s licence increased from R1 000 to R1 500. 2. Failing to comply with a stop sign increased from R1 000 to R1 500. 3. Failing to stop at a red traffic signal R1 000 to R1 500. 4. Holding a cell phone device in your hand or any part of body while driving from R800 to R1 500. Members of the public who want to pay their outstanding traffic fines can also pay via the municipal website under the heading EServices, subsection E Fines. The Budget and Treasury Directorate will also be installing speedpoint machines at the Traffic Department and customer care centres to assist with the payment of fines.

Fundraiser for Animal AntiCruelty League REPORTER A FUNDRAISER for the Animal AntiCruelty League (AACL) will be held on June 30 to recoup some of the funds that have been used in helping out in the fireaffected areas recently. The Old Cash Store Organic Buffet Fundraiser promises to be an evening of camaraderie, delicious organic cuisine, with plenty of vegetarian and vegan offers.

– ODETTE PARFITT

LETTER TO EDITOR

Junior entrepreneurs ready to wow customers I read with dismay that our municipality is to address the road safety problem by installing more speed humps in the name of socalled traffic calming. There are many negative aspects to installing speed humps and this should only be done as a last resort. As it is, we are already known as the speed hump capital of South Africa. The negative points are: No warning signs which were either not installed or removed. Faded paint so that a motorist not familiar with the area fails to see the speed hump and damages his vehicle. These speed humps should be maintained on a constant basis with fresh paint and proper warning signs. The present humps are very severe and one needs to slow down to 20km/h to cross it without damage. I know of a person who suffered spinal injuries because of this.

I have no problem with the pedestrian humps as they serve a purpose and are not so severe. There may also be damage to the ozone layer because of vehicles having to slow down and accelerate. May I suggest we lower the speed limit in suburban areas to 50km/h and provide strict law enforcement by having more traffic police vehicles and motorcycles on the road. Arterial roads can still be at the 60km/h limit or as indicated by speed limit signs. More use can also be made by installing traffic roundabouts or mini-circles to control speeding vehicles. Finally, our road markings are in a very poor state. Do we have to wait for the next elections before more road markings are done?

Bay’s youngest business brains prepare for market day PORT Elizabeth’s youngest entrepreneurs are gearing up to sell the innovative products they have made through their own small businesses at a market day in Walmer Park on Saturday. Fifty learners from nine different schools in the Nelson Mandela Bay poured their hearts into the various items which will be sold at the market. The group, who ranges in ages from 7 to 16, have been honing their business and financial skills in the national Young Entrepreneurs (YE) programme, which was introduced earlier this year. Their stalls will be set up near Walmer Park Shopping Centre’s cinemas from 10am to midday on Saturday. “These days, a university degree is no longer a guarantee of a job, and while I still value a university education, I have seen too many graduates sitting without jobs. Kids today also need to consider entrepreneurship as a career,” said Ansulene Prinsloo, YE franchise holder. – REPORTER

Ithemba Lam is a temporary safe haven for abandoned, abused, orphaned or neglected babies, located in Forest Hill. “We work with social workers and the Children’s Court, who place babies in our care for temporary safe care while they investigate the specific case of abuse,” said Kim Fankhauser, house mother at Ithemba Lam. “Although the government makes funds available for places like us, we cannot claim it ourselves. It’s up to the specific case worker to do so and very often we do not receive it.” In an effort to keep their doors open, they do their own fundraising which is where the Musicfest@Tramways comes in. “We believe that the service we provide to children in the city is important and it is significant work.” Learners from various schools in Port Elizabeth will perform at the musical showcase event. These schools include Summerwood Primary, Clarendon Park Primary, Erica Girls’ Primary, Charlo Primary, Greenwood Primary and Woodridge College. Joining them will be the homeschooled youth of Port Elizabeth and other children who are part of the Young Entrepreneur (YE) Foundation’s course with Ansulene Prinsloo. Hubbard said, “This will be my third time attending a National Wind Band course and I am so excited to make music with new and old friends.” The National Youth Orchestra Winter Course will take place from June 30 to July 9. This year they will be performing an array of Fantasia-inspired music from Tchaikovsky’s

The course is made possible through funding by the National Arts Festival, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Department of Music, National Lotteries Commission and the SAMRO Foundation. The first of two performances will take place on July 7 at 1pm in the Monument Foyer at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. The second will take place on July 9 at 3pm at the Savoy Theatre in Port Elizabeth. Tickets are available at Computicket.

They would appreciate any donations to assist with the campaign, especially blankets, scarfs, beanies and ingredients for soup. Any other items that can make a difference in someone’s life this winter are also welcome. For further enquiries contact Tammy Kayser on 041 451 1365 or send an email to sw3@acvvpenoord.co.za.

SPAR KIRKWOOD WILDSFEES:

Embrace the finer things in kykNET Leefstyl Plein THE kykNET Leefstyl Plein is affording SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees festivalgoers time to sit back, relax and embrace the finer things in life. The two firsts of its kind at the Wildsfees will be craft beer and craft gin. Wine lovers can look forward to savouring and discussing the produce with the makers or their agents, namely Calitzdorp, La Capra, Cronier Wines, Simonsvlei, Ormonde, Swartland Winery, Clairvauix, Sumsare, Van Lovern, Veden Agency, Zeven-

wacht Wines, Jakkalsvlei and Rhino Run. For those who prefer their tipple brewed rather than fermented, a range of brews from the South African Breweries Newlands Spring Craft beer is a must try. Patrons visiting the Craft Gin Bar at the Bridge Street Brewery (BSB) will be able to sip locally distilled fine craft gins, each with its own specific garnish. There will also be a wide variety of

fine foods to complement the wine, beer and gin, including cheese, oysters, sushi, olives and biltong. Entertainment will be provided by The Sensationals, Patrick Lindoor and the Bay City Rockers. A Sunday highlight is the Skaapkop Lang Tafel, which is also serving skaapstertjies this year. Anyone wanting to tuck into the traditional delicacies must contact the Wildsfees office to make a booking. – REPORTER

Swartkops community hosts fundraiser to save river MICHAEL ZOETMULDER MEMBERS of the local community, including the Bluewater Bay Surf Lifesaving Club and the Bluewater Canoe Club have rallied together to host a fundraising event on Saturday for the Zwartkops Conservancy to promote public

awareness in caring for the greater Swartkops River eco-system. The SPAR River Paddle Challenge will take place at 2pm on Saturday and is open to all paddlers (canoe and/or surf ski) and will consist of two 6km single races and a 6km doubles race

through the canals of the Swartkops River between the Swartkops railway bridge and lower Amsterdamhoek. The start and finish will be at Dufour Park, Amsterdamhoek. The paddle will be followed by a dinner and prize-giving at the Bluewater Bay Surf Lifesaving Club from 6pm.

“The conservancy is a non-profit organisation where all funds generated from membership fees and donations are used for conservancy work and we need to do whatever we can to help save this river,” said event organiser Louis Beyers. Raffle tickets at R50 each and more info are available on www.zsports.co.za.

ADVERTORIAL: THE COOP MICA

The secret to turning your prize into feast fit for a king With hunting season now well underway, many hunters are still enjoying the adventure of a lifetime in the Eastern Cape. Hunting season in the Eastern Cape runs from June until the end of August each year. The Eastern Cape’s wide variety of animal species, various different natural environments and wacky weather patterns combine to form a hunter’s greatest challenge – acquiring your prize trophy while surviving the brutal elements. However, it is time to start thinking about what needs to be done when the adventure comes to an end and you head back home. Some say the real work only begins after the hunt and they may very well be right. There might

be a big welcome-home party waiting for you and someone to give you that long-awaited congratulatory slap on the back, but when that fades and everyone returns to their normal lives, you must face the daunting task of preparing all that meat. After all, catching your prey and preparing it for the table are two very different things, but luckily Crown National has got your back throughout the whole process from the hunt to the table. They have been trading in spices and seasonings for more than 100 years and offer a wide range of spices, seasonings, marinades and sauces that help ease the pressure of preparing and cooking meat and make for a truly great dining experience.

Fortunately, the ideal place to see to all your Crown National needs, and thus your desired list of spices and sauces, is located right here in Port Elizabeth. The Co-op Mica is the ideal place to get everything you need and more to get your meat prepared for the most divine meal for the family. Whether you are planning to make biltong, droëwors or just braai meat, your preparation need not be difficult at all when Crown National is on your side. In South Africa specifically, lighting a fire, sitting around it with your friends and family and preparing a nice meal is a time-honoured tradition. There is nothing better than coming home from

that wild and exciting hunting trip than relaxing with the people you care about while basking in the fruits of your labour. And the great thing about having all those different types of meat at your disposal when you are finished is that you can dole it out to other people and quite possibly make a name for yourself in the meat business. So, prepare yourself with the help of Crown National to make the world’s best meat when you get back from the grand hunting adventure. For more info or advice on your personal application visit The Co-op Mica, located in the Willow Road Shopping Centre on the corner of Circular Drive and Willow Road or contact the sales team on 041 007 0580.

MOTENA keeps girls busy with netball SELBY MADIKANE MOTHERWELL Netball Association (MOTENA) Youth Day Tournament attracted hundreds of young players and supporters to the Raymond Mhlaba Sports Complex Netball Courts on June 16 and 17. The tournament runs annually throughout Nelson Mandela Bay. Fans saw 10 netball teams taking each other on. The tournament was played in a round-robin format. It was announced by MOTENA president Lindelwa Notie Dayimani that the trophies would be presented during the formal prize-giving. Nelson Mandela Bay Netball Association president Noluntu Dyubhele commended the MOTENA executive committee for organising an

event of the highest standard. Dyubhele said, “We could not believe what we were seeing here at Raymond Mhlaba Sports Complex. The competition was very tight among the teams. It was awesome and that is why we are very delighted. “Today there are many choices, but you must take the right decisions for your choices. Playing sport is the right thing to do. Drugs and alcohol abuse are today’s social ills that jeopardise the future of our children. I warn you that you must not use drugs and alcohol at all. I would like to thank MOTENA for organising this high standard event that has kept our children together.” The winning teams were:

The U/16 category: Moonlight Stars The U/19 category: Goal Desire Senior girls: Orleyn Netball Club

Youth unite in sport and culture programme SELBY MADIKANE THE Ward 59 Khulisana Sports and Culture Programme kept youngsters busy during Youth Day at Motherwell NU5. The youth took part in five-aside soccer, netball and judo, as well as basketball and Taebo Dance. The live music was played by local artists and guest artists Sliq Angel and MXO. Some of the youth showcased their intellectual ability in the form of poems and praise singing. Motherwell NU5 Taebo Dance Group under instructor Sbu Khulu stole the show, when the group displayed their skills to the fans. Motherwell Judo Club, under the guidance of Sensei Wandisile Ngqawana, also kept the youth on

their feet when they demonstrated their martial arts skills. A few motivational speeches took place between the games with the aim of informing the youth of the significance of Youth Day. ANC Ward 59 Councillor Mazangwandile Dano, said the aim of the activities was to unite the youth. “We are building unity among you young people. We want to instil the sense of responsibility in you. The youth of 1976 fought for you so that you should get free education and have a bright future. They lost their lives during apartheid for you and for the next generation,” Dano said. The games were played in a roundrobin format. The teams that accumulated the most points were declared the winners and received gold medals. All the learners received participation certificates.

The following teams won in their respective sports: Soccer: Angels Junior Soccer champions: Monaco Netball: Flames Netball Club Basketball: PE Comets Judo: Motherwell Judo Club

The tournament started in a round-robin format and ended in a knockout stage. Defending champions Ikamva Movers did not take part in this year’s programme. In the U/13 finals, Young Aces from Veeplaas lifted the trophy after demolishing Tomorrow Stars 3-0. In the U/15 finals, Showvillage claimed a 2-0 victory over Tomor-

row Stars, while in the U/17 finals, Tomorrow Stars redeemed their club’s dignity after outplaying Walmer lads Mabayibone Strikers 4-1 in a one-sided game. TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

Gamble Pharmacy the team to beat at Business Night Relay next Tuesday

Merc and Ferrari battle in Baku IN 2016, Azerbaijan became the newest addition to the Formula 1 calendar as it hosted the country’s first-ever street race in the capital city of Baku. F1’s favourite designer, Herman Tilke, envisioned and delivered a circuit, which combined the city’s uniquely historical buildings with the modern and technical world of Formula1. The Baku City track, the third longest of the season, is an exercise in extreme opposites. While the mid sector of exceedingly tight and twisting corners is more akin to Monaco, it is in stark contrast to the enormously long straights that dominate the first and final sectors of the lap and are more reminiscent of Monza. The circuit is the first counterclockwise track on the calendar and provides one of the most picturesque backdrops seen all year. The last time Lewis Hamilton steered his Mercedes around a proper street circuit was the Monaco grand prix. To put it mildly, things didn’t go well for the Brit on those streets. Though the Baku race is similarly contested on the streets of Azerbaijan, it doesn’t have too many parallels. There are a few factors in Hamilton’s, and to a greater degree Mercedes’, favour this weekend. The longest straight on the F1 calendar will allow Mercedes to focus on its best feature – the engine. Further, the Pirelli compounds on offer this weekend is the soft and supersoft compounds, which Mercedes favours far more than the ultra- and supersoft combo. From last year’s tyre performance it doesn’t appear that degradation is a big factor in Baku, which saw drivers able to run long stints and make fewer pitstops. As there are fewer opportunities for a creative pit strategy on Sunday, it ultimately increases the importance of qualifying well on Saturday.

Similarly, there are a few factors that Hamilton will have to overcome this weekend in order to claw back the lead of the driver’s championship. The most important of these are undoubtedly the two Ferraris of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen. Be it because of damage or unreliability, the Canadian grand prix was a messy one for Ferrari. It was the type of grand prix that will, undoubtedly, harden their resolve of securing a good haul of points this weekend. Given their relative performance on other street circuits so far this year, form dictates that the prancing horse will be no slouch around here either. The Italian team delivered a solid race here last year despite not being near the performance level of Mercedes. In far less competitive cars than they have this year, Vettel finished second while Raikkonen ran third for the majority of the race. Since the Monaco grand prix, the team has vehemently denied any team orders are at work between its two drivers. It will make for interesting viewing should the Scuderia be faced with a similar scenario, to Monaco, this weekend. Valtteri Bottas could yet prove to be a factor for Hamilton too. The Finn is currently 36 points adrift of his teammate and that with a retirement in Spain. His first race win, in Russia, came on a weekend when Hamilton was inexplicably off the pace and he delivered in Monaco too and he firmly believes that in a head-to-head battle he has the measure of his teammate. “I think we [Hamilton and I] are very close, I don’t see a difference,” he said. “I believe in myself. But he was shown up in Canada on a circuit where he is considered to be somewhat of a specialist. It’s as perfect a time as any to beat Hamilton in a direct fight.”

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 21 JUNE 2017

African Leopards top PELFA Old Buck league again FRANCOIS ROTHNER AFRICAN Leopards are once again on top of the Port Elizabeth Legends Football Association (PELFA) Old Buck Legends League after whipping Priory 8-1 on Priory’s home turf. Leopards pressured Priory’s defence and in the 15th minute, Tabo Simane scored the Leopards’ first goal. About four minutes later, it was Sipho Solomon’s turn to put Leopards two goals up. Priory tried hard and were eventually successful when Rory Mortimer scored after a very well-worked free kick. After some interplay in the back line, Ncedisa Goniwe found the back of the net and put Leopards 3-1 ahead at half-time. In the second half, Priory ran out of defensive ideas with Leopards running riot, scoring five goals on the trot. Tabo Simane also helped himself to a brace. Solomon enjoyed the lapses in Priory’s de-

fence and added another two goals to his tally, ending with a hat trick. Mbulelo Tsotsa and Vuyo Dyasi scored Leopards’ seventh and eighth goals. In another game, PE City were back on the winning trail when they got the better of NMBM, beating them 3-2. Tony Danes had City up 1-0 at half-time. About 17 minutes into the second half, Mcweli Mndayi netted City’s second goal. Graham scored their third goal. Both of NMBM’s goals came in the second half. Hearts enjoyed a good win when they overcame Old Grey 4-1. Old Grey put up some resistance, however. Goal scoring machine, Ian Stevenson, scored in the 21st minute of the first half to put Hearts up 1-0. Not to be outdone by his brother, Lee Stevenson scored from a corner about three minutes before half-time. Old Grey tried hard to make up the deficit,

but could not quite make it. Shamrocks and Kuyga Masters showed their defensive strengths when their wellcontested and enjoyable game ended in a 0-0 draw. The shock of the night came when Westpark held fancied Callies, the 2016 league winners, to a 2-2 draw. The teams played to a 1-1 score in the first half, after Donovan Humphreys of Callies and Richard Parker of Westpark each scored a goal. Carwyn Thompson put Westpark into the lead halfway through the second half. However, Johnathan Peterson denied Westpark their first win of the season with an equaliser for Callies six minutes before time. The fixtures for tonight, June 21, are: NMBM vs Westpark at Oval at 7pm Old Grey vs PE City at Old Grey Sports Club at 7pm Callies vs Priory at Londt Park at 7:30pm

Kuyga Masters vs Hearts at St Albans at 7:30pm Shamrocks vs African Leopards at Londt Park Sports Club at 8pm.
