Billson Trucks opens new facility worth over R100m THANDI SETOKOE BILLSON Trucks Port Elizabeth officially inaugurated a new state-of-the-art dealer facility for Volvo Group Southern Africa brands, Volvo Trucks and UD Trucks, at an investment of over R100 million last week Friday. The company, which was established in 1986, has been a UD Trucks franchised dealer since 2001, and is one of Volvo Trucks’ newest independent dealers. According to Billson Trucks owner Patrick Billson this new development is set to change the face of the city’s Deal Party industrial area while also creating job employment. “Deal Party has been neglected to a certain extent in favour of Coega. Yes, Coega is great and has obviously been a great catalyst for our business but Deal Party has really been the heart of our original industrial area. “With the acquisition of Volvo Trucks, we are bringing business back into Port Elizabeth, as I am a firm believer in keeping it local, supporting local companies and suppliers to boost our local industries, to create and sustain jobs,” Billson said. The facility boasts 11 30-metre long services bays, of which four also have service pits, a roadworthy test lane plus an additional eight repair bays. The roadworthy test lane also has a brake roller tester, chassis tester and wheel alignment equipment. Billson said the new dealership was aimed at offering customers world-class facilities and services, adding that it has been specifically designed to improve vehicle flow and turnaround times. Volvo Group Southern Africa’s president, Torbjörn Christensson said Port Elizabeth was a key economic hub in the region, with large industrial developments drawing key players in the logistics and transport market.
“We are privileged to be represented by Billson Trucks in the area, as they are able to provide our customers with world-class support in sales, service and parts,” Christensson said. He added that new technologies and changes in customer behaviour meant that the support the dealers provide also has to keep developing. UD Trucks Southern Africa’s managing director, Gert Swanepoel said that the brand was proud of the successful partnership with Billson Trucks over the past 17 years. The new facility has been built according to stringent environmental friendly requirements, including the installation of solar panels, insulation throughout to improve temperature control and to reduce energy consumption, double glazed reflective glass, LED lighting with motion sensors, as well as an advanced water harvesting and storage system for up to 120 000 litres of water. An oil separation system was also available in the wash bays for water recycling purposes.

I-Hub relaunched for Nelson Mandela Bay REPORTER THE Seda NMB ICT Incubator was relaunched as the Nelson Mandela Bay I-Hub on March 12 at its new premises in Kwantu Towers in Govan Mbeki Avenue, Port Elizabeth. The chairman of the Nelson Mandela Bay I-Hub, Darryl Dennis, revealed the new name, selection criteria and structure of the incubator. All future applications to the incubator will be judged by a panel of information and communication technology (ICT) experts. Only applicants who focus solely on disruptive technologies and whose business idea is socially relevant will be accepted as incubatees by the Nelson Mandela Bay I-Hub. “Our main objective is to remain at the cutting edge of the fast-paced ICT sector. “To achieve this, we need to focus on technologies that have the potential for disrupting existing value chains to facilitate market access while contributing to social development including automation and robotics, educational technology, smart agriculture, big data analytics, cloud computing and blockchain technology,” said Dennis. The incubation programme is divided into three phases, namely the bronze phase that continues for a duration of about three months, the silver phase for a duration of six months, and
the gold phase for a duration of between 12 and 24 months. Incubatees will need to graduate from each phase to progress to the next phase, ensuring that only serious business owners continue to benefit from the resources of the Nelson Mandela Bay I-Hub. There will be an opportunity for incubatees to be part of the post incubator programme, where they proactively contribute to and benefit from major projects working with the more established businesses in the metro and the province. The post incubation programme ensures that ICT professionals under the Nelson Mandela Bay I-Hub continue to contribute to the ICT sector in the Nelson Mandela Bay. The bronze phase concludes with a fully registered business, a completed business canvas and product/service concept. At the end of the silver phase the incubatee should be able to prove earned revenue and have achieved market readiness. With the gold phase, the incubatee must be ready to exit the incubator at 24 months with self-sustainable revenue, established business processes, and be non-reliant on incubation services. “We want the Nelson Mandela Bay I-Hub to become accessible to the community of the Nelson Mandela Bay, and not only clients of the Nelson Mandela Bay I-Hub. This is our vision.
“However, the first step is to get clients and partners on board who will enable us to make that vision a reality. With our focus on disruptive technologies, our stricter selection criteria, expert judging panel and our new outcomesbased programme that is deadline driven, a new benchmark is set for ICT professionals that will encourage innovation, and hopefully attract more investors to the ICT sector in the Nelson Mandela Bay,” says Dennis. Interventions in the pipeline for the Nelson Mandela Bay I-Hub for the next two years include a software engineering training lab and app factory, an e-health platform for poor communities, two e-learning platforms, and the enterprise development intranet. “With the support of our long-standing sponsors, Seda and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, we are discussing partnerships with stakeholders at the national level with the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial
Dr. Kobus Hurn
Research (CSIR),” says Mfenyana. For more info on the Nelson Mandela Bay I-Hub visit www.nmbihub.co.za.

Bay SMEs graduate from enterprise programme REPORTER FIFTEEN small businesses, drawn from across the Nelson Mandela Metro, recently graduated from a six-month Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC)/Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber (NMBBC) enterprise development programme which has attracted R1,052 million in funding from the ECDC in the last four phases. Besides receiving a certificate during the graduation ceremony, graduates will receive a year’s free membership of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber. This entitles them to participate in the Business Chamber’s events, such as coffee mornings, business breakfasts and various workshops, including soft skills training. They will also be promoted through the Business Chamber platforms. A total of 64 businesses from the metro have gone through the programme since its inception in the 2014/15 financial year. In the first
year of the programme, 31 enterprises participated in the programme. The programme was rolled out over a period of six months wherein enterprises were equipped in areas that included leadership, marketing and financial management. The training is conducted and assessed by the Nelson Mandela University Business School. NMBBC operations manager Prince Matonsi said the Business Chamber is thrilled about the Enterprise Development Programme graduation ceremony of the fourth phase. “As the Business Chamber, we would like to express our gratitude to the ECDC for their exceptional partnership with us along the enterprise development journey from phase one until this fourth phase and the 2019 new revised phase,” Matonsi said. ECDC senior manager for Enterprise Development Mpumi Fundam said ECDC is excited to form part of this empowering programme which prioritises the competitiveness of businesses located in the NMB region.

SANBS on mass blood drive today THE South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is implementing a mass blood drive today (March 21), to recruit new donors and ensure there is sufficient stock of safe blood available in South Africa. The SANBS is especially calling on firsttime donors and lapsed donors who know that their blood type is Group O, to donate. “Currently less than 1% of South Africans donate blood even though it demands little more than giving up 30 minutes of their time
‘Star Struck SA’ competition is back in the Bay THE Star Struck SA competition is back in Port Elizabeth and will be hosting preliminary auditions at the Greenacres Shopping Centre this weekend. Owing to last year’s success and being unable to accommodate a large number of contestants last year, the organisers decided to extend the audition time to two days. Individuals aged 14 to 35 may enter as a rapper or a singer. There will be no category for groups this year. A special gospel edition has been added this year and the auditions will run at the same time. Auditions will take place at the Greenacres Shopping Centre Auditorium from 10:00 to 16:00 this Saturday and Sunday. The entry fee is R50. “We will then host an official round one and two in Port Elizabeth over the Easter weekend to select the top 10 who will be joining us in Cape Town for the official rounds this year,” said organiser, Brilynn van Rooyen. “For updates, people can follow Star Struck SA on social media. We are very excited to see the great talent in PE this year for both gospel and the normal Star Struck edition.” For info send an e-mail to bookings@starstruckrecords.co.za or call Brilynn van Rooyen on 081 406 9296. – REPORTER

The #NewBlood campaign is targeting the collection of 4 500 units of blood on the public holiday. “The beauty of blood donation is that virtually anyone can do it. You don’t need to have money or live in a fancy house or have a graduate degree or a fancy car,” said Mlambo. “If you’re over 16 years old, weigh over 50kg and practice a healthy lifestyle, you can be a blood donor. Nobody can make a greater impact than saving someone else’s life.” First-time donors must produce identifica-

Keep Caring campaign launches 2018 clothing drive REPORTER WHEN Port Elizabeth’s very own Good Samaritan, Amy Erasmus, started the Keep Caring campaign during her gap year last year, she did not realise how much it would change her. The newly matriculated 18-year-old
said the idea for the campaign came to her in March last year. “I realised that winter was coming and everybody needed warmer clothes. Most of us have clothes which we no longer wear or need.” By the end of 2017, Erasmus had collected 2 741 articles of clothing, 256kg food and 30 blankets, which she dis-
tributed to underprivileged residents and charities in Nelson Mandela Bay. Following this, she hosted a cupcake drive in aid of Domestic Animal Care and has also made a number of other donations to charities and schools. Now, with winter once again approaching, she has launched another clothing drive and need the commu-
nity’s support to make it happen. The drive kicked off on Monday, March 19, and will continue until June 17. Houdini has joined the campaign for the second year by providing dropoff points at their outlets in Newton Park, Sherwood and Walmer. Other drop-off points are Surf Cen-
tre in Humewood, Bad Apple Creative in Central, Action Cycles in Heugh Road, Lush Beauty Salon in Glen Hurd, Wayne Pheiffer Cycles in Linton Grange and Gralin Auto in Fairview. For more info contact hello@keepcaring.co.za or go to www.keepcaring.co.za.
ADVERTORIAL:THE CO-OP MICA
Outdoor adventure beckons as Easter weekend approaches WITH this year’s Easter weekend fast approaching, the excitement is almost tangible as families everywhere start finalising their plans for a quick getaway or a relaxing time at home. It is the season for family bonding and taking the time to remember what is important in life. It is also the ideal time to get a much-needed break from work and spend time with your loved ones at the same time. In South Africa specifically, tradi-
tion practically demands that people come together for a braai over a long weekend and nothing encourages fun and bonding like sitting around a campfire and reminiscing about the old days without having to worry about getting up early the next morning to go to work. The Co-op Mica has made it a priority to ensure that families have the best possible time during the Easter weekend this year with the least amount of fuss. They offer a number of braai and outdoor accessories and products
side to see to all your cooking needs, while the cast iron skottel has a flat cooking surface and removable legs for added convenience. The dop stok is also an outdoor gadget meant to make life a little easier. The mild steel frame, which acts as a tall, portable cup holder, can be anchored in the ground near the braai to provide the man (or woman) in charge of the feast a place to put his (or her) drink. Nature enthusiasts and camp lovers will agree that being outside, be it in your own yard or somewhere
that are ideal for a quick camping trip or even just a small family gathering in the backyard. Their LK’s range, in particular, extends past just braaing and outdoor accessories and into the home for those who are not up for a camping trip or backyard cookout. Some of the LK’s products on offer at the Co-op are the reversible grill and pan, three-legged cast iron skottel and a nifty little invention called a dop stok. The grill and pan boast reversible handles with both a ribbed and flat
far, far away, is the best place to be next weekend. There, you get fresh air, maybe a little exercise and, best of all, there are many great hiding spots for an Easter egg hunt. So, get your braai tongs out, load the family in the car and head to the Co-op Mica to start the adventure. For more info or advice on your camping, braaing and outdoor needs, visit the Co-op Mica, located in the Willow Road Shopping Centre on the corner of Circular Drive and Willow Road or contact the sales team on 041 007 0580.

Greater heights in aviation for head boy NWABISA FUNDE IT’S the last lap of Jordan van Eeden’s journey in obtaining his private pilot licence. The 18year-old Harvest Christian School head boy is yet to complete approximately 30 hours of flying solo in order to be eligible for his private pilot licence. Hard work and determination have been the core values for Jordan, who admits that balancing both his pilot and high school studies has been quite a challenge. But he persevered and completed his eight pilot examinations – which all required a minimum pass mark of 75%. Jordan was born into a family with a passion

for flying. His father, Gerhard van Eeden, who is a pilot and Jordan’s instructor, recalls the fond memory of the absolute joy on Jordan’s face, at the age of three, as he held the controls and marvelled at the direction of the plane following the movement with his little hands. “Having my father as my instructor has strengthened our father-son bond as we both have a love for flying,” said Jordan. He recently flew solo for the first time and did three circuits around the Port Elizabeth Airport with an instructor and proceeded to fly on his own. Jordan has earned his wings for flying solo and with the anticipation of completing his flying hours he is undoubtedly aiming for greater heights.

PE school principal to compete in Ironman REPORTER THE principal of local private school, Willow Academy, is truly leading by example as she gears up to compete in the Ironman African Championships on April 15.

Charlene Rademeyer, who is part of the Race of Faith team, says she was inspired by her learners and decided to put her own advice into practice. “As a principal, you generally sit behind a desk, and you tell kids to be fit and manage their time with sports and academics. “After completing the 2017 Corporate Triathlon Challenge, I realised it is possible to complete the full triathlon. “I want to be an example to my learners of what you can achieve, no matter your current level of fitness.” The principal, who is also currently studying towards her Honours degree, will be racing in aid of the Smile Foundation and quoted a Bible scripture as part of her inspiration. “Believe it, and you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.” Willow Academy, which will celebrate its 30th birthday this year, was recently delighted to see all of its 2017 matric students pass their IEB exams.

Jeanny’s Soup Kitchen becomes beacon of hope REPORTER
Children are Edwards’s top priority and are always served before the adults. “In 2009, after 10 years of feeding the needy, we received our NPO certificate,” she said proudly. “And in 2014, when Ford stepped into our lives, it was a tremendous blessing.” Ford’s initial support involved upgrading and revamping the existing wooden Wendy house structures, which Edwards used as her home and for the soup kitchen – including fitting a brand-new roof. The converted shipping containers were donated and installed adjacent to Edwards’s home in 2015 and the facilities were further upgraded in 2016 with solar power and lighting, as well as security fencing. A second stove helped lighten the workload of the volunteers in the new soup kitchen, allowing them to get their work done in a much shorter period of time. “It really lifted our spirits,” said Edwards.
FROM its humble beginnings in 1999, Jeanny’s Soup Kitchen has grown to become both a landmark and a beacon of hope to many residents in an impoverished community on the northwestern outskirts of Port Elizabeth. Two bright blue repurposed shipping containers, funded by Ford South Africa, form the hub of Jeanny’s Soup Kitchen in Malabar Extension 6. Local resident and founder of the soup kitchen, Jeanny Edwards, works three days a week as a community health worker at the public clinic in neighbouring Gelvandale where she grew up. Five afternoons a week she feeds the hungry. According to her, they serve Ext 6 and Parsons Vlei on Mondays, the Quarry area on Tuesdays, Ext 6 on Wednesdays, 7de Laan on Thursdays and Ext 6 again on Fridays. Over the course of a week, the soup kitchen feeds more than 1 700 people.
Two repurposed shipping containers form the hub of Jeanny’s Soup Kitchen in Malabar. PHOTO:SUPPLIED The shipping containers at the heart of the operation are multipurpose. “We use them for everything,” said Edwards. One container houses the actual kitchen, which has racks for sorting and storing everything. “Our food is much safer in the storeroom,” she explained. Outside is a shaded, well-tended, and secure vegetable garden which Ford created, complete with a JoJo
rainwater tank so Edwards can grow her own vegetables and be more selfsufficient. The other, longer container houses the dining room, whose walls are lined with shelves, heaving under the weight of donated books. “When the children sit and eat, they can also enjoy going through a book,” she said. Besides serving almost 90 000 meals per year, the distinctive blue containers act as a reassuring anchor for the
community. It offers a welcoming space for people to gather, catch up on gossip, ask for help, share advice, commiserate and collaborate. “We run the clinic here in the container on a Monday,” said Edwards. “When there are meetings and people don’t have a venue, we use the container. If the social workers need to talk to the people here, then we host them in the container. And people can come here to phone for emergency services.” Edwards has big dreams to further expand the ‘menu offering’ in the shipping containers. Continuing with her ever child-centric approach, certified skills training in Early Childhood Development and school holiday programmes are high on her wish list. Jeanny’s Soup Kitchen is a landmark in this community and even though Edwards cannot single-handedly uplift the lives of residents by heeding her call to feed tummies and nourish souls, she will certainly leave a lasting legacy.

Radiographer takes health care to townships THANDI SETOKOE AFTER opening his first X-ray services in Ziyabuya Shopping Centre at KwaDwesi in 2016, Xolisa Menemene vowed to make it his mission to continue developing more practices in the Eastern Cape. This came to pass when he opened his second practice in
King William’s Town last year. The Port Elizabeth-born diagnostic radiographer has now recently opened yet another practice in Mlazi, KwaZulu-Natal. “I’ve been hard at work preparing for this new milestone since November last year and finally the hard work has all paid off,” Menemene said. He described how he had to quit his job at Nompumelelo Hospital

in Peddie close to two years ago in order to fund his first practice. “It was a tough decision to make because I had just lost my mother and I was the breadwinner at home, so, I also had the huge responsibility of being a guardian to my younger brother. He said in as much as he received funding from the Small Enterprise Finance Agency, he also had to contribute money from his own pocket. Following his studies of the X-ray market in the townships, Menemene said it was clear that there was a problem in the process involving medical practitioners and referrals of X-ray services. “Some residents have to travel relatively long distances to get to X-ray services because, more often than not, patients are referred to the urban areas and that can be very costly. “That is why I decided to locate my practices in the townships to make it more accessible and affordable.” The radiographer plans to be based in KZN for the next three months to ensure the smooth operation of his newly opened business and thereafter return to Port Elizabeth. “I have left a very reliable team back home, so, I know everything is in good hands.” He further added that he continues building relationships with other medical practitioners with-

Merle Blunden, manager: social work services at Port Elizabeth Mental Health said Tom Smith (22) is a sterling example of being able to live a full life, despite his diagnosis of Down Syndrome. “Intellectual disability is often misunderstood – and as a result – Tom and many others are denied opportunities. “Tom leads a full and balanced life – attending gym with a personal trainer twice weekly and swimming. He is passionate about his girlfriend, his X-box and mountain bike trails. He donates blood regularly in a bid to do good for his community. He pursues interesting hobbies, such as bee-keeping and attends the starfish social club monthly. And, his mother tells us he does all his chores at home with no complaints,” Blunden said. Tom and his parents are active members of the Down Syndrome Association of the Eastern Cape, and Tom was recently chosen to represent the Eastern Cape at a Self Advocacy Symposium held in Pretoria in March – where the focus was on ensuring access to basic rights. Blunden said it’s important to highlight Tom’s story.
“Just like you and me, Tom would love to be gainfully employed and make a meaningful contribution within his community. He has previously worked as a waitron/runner at Cappellini’s and has recently completed two years of work experience at the Connyngham Coffee Shop – where he has learned more about the hospitality sector,” Blunden said. “We at Port Elizabeth Mental Health encourage everyone to look beyond the disability to see the abilities that Tom and many others have.”

Reality cooking show dines in the Bay THANDI SETOKOE LOVERS of the hit show, Come Dine With Me South Africa, can look forward to an intriguing episode when the show visits the homes of four contestants in the Bay this Thursday evening. The series, which taps into people’s fundamental domestic differences‚ their cooking and what it takes to entertain others in style, will see four chefs taking turns to treat each other to a three-course dinner party at their homes. Competing in the hope of winning a R10 000 cash prize will be sales rep Gwendoline Zwie-

gelaar (24), business owner Cardel Lippstreu (38), accounts manager Garneth Jaggers (32) and ceramic artist Lee Hensberg (46). Described as a bubbly, fun, adventurous and mysterious individual, Zwiegelaar will host the first night’s dinner. She prides herself at being the best sandwich maker, “That is the signature dish which my friends and family rave about.” Responding to her biggest dinner party disaster to date, Zwiegelaar said her chicken potjie took the cake, “I used red wine instead of white and it coloured the meat. It looked uncooked.” According to the BBC Worldwide synopsis, Hensberg and Lippstreu both confessed to being picky eaters, meaning Zwiegelaar has her work cut out for her if she wants to win the cash prize. “We also expect to see sparks fly when former Mr Port Elizabeth Jaggers kicks the evening off with a rather inappropriate comment that could throw the whole evening into chaos,” BBC Worldwide said. Night two, hosted by Lippstreu, will take an interesting turn when the diners reveal surprising fantasies about what their alter ego drag names might be. While night three sees former Mr Port Elizabeth Jaggers take to the floor and attempt to dazzle the ladies. He calls himself the ‘Steak King’ of PE, and with steak as mains, what could go wrong? Rating his dinner party hosting skills on a scale of one to 10 (10 being highest), Jaggers gave himself a general score of 11 out of 10, but said for this particular dinner he would give himself a six, due to the difficult guests. “Criticising has its limits however and is probably why Jaggers resorts to his trump card, a red speedo with dessert.” The final dinner party sees Hensberg play host and what better way to welcome guests than by serving something many might not like, periwinkles on the patio. The foursome are treated to rosemary roasted marrowbones for starters, chicken in

a clay pot with forty cloves of garlic for mains, and homemade icecream with cinnamon banana for dessert. “Will age trump enthusiasm? Will it be bat-
tle of sexes? Will the weird triumph over the ordinary? Who will be the ultimate host with the most?” Find out on tomorrow’s episode at 20:00 on BBC Brit, channel 120 on DStv.

I saw this powerful Shamsi on a TV programme. Before I had suffered for years and I tried many people for help but all failed. I could not believe it when he showed me my enemies in form of a dream and whatever they were doing to me. Every single detail he showed me about my enemies was so true. Shamsi accurately read my fortune and told me all my problems without me speaking a single word to him. Within 6 days after his prayers, my husband left his girlfriend and came back to me plus my enemies approached me and confessed the bad things they had done to me. Shamsi also gave me a special ring to fix my financial problems, and a love crystal that made people at home and at work to like me, listen to me and do whatever I want, without me even having to ask.
She also helps people with: • Financial Problems • Love Relationship • Work Crises • Family Problems • Bad Luck Health Problems • and many more...

Pefile guides Major Chiefs to victory over Camper SELBY MADIKANE MAJOR Chiefs’ star striker, Simamkele Dudley Pefile, scored the all-important goal when his side beat Camper United 1-0 in their SAFA NMB SAB Regional League game which was played at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday. Chiefs made a bright start to the game with the home side being kept in their own territory for a most of the first half. Pefile should have been rewarded with a goal, but Camper United’s goalkeeper, Zenande Ntyinkala, pulled off a brilliant save to deny the sure-footed striker a goal-scoring opportunity. Camper left full back, Okuhle Mpayipheli and striker, Thando Mjojeli started a good move, but Mpayipheli’s effort went over the posts. The introduction of the striker, Ndyebo Mazantsi, gave hope to his supporters that Camper would break the ice, but unfortunately, Chiefs’ defence was very tight. Ntyinkala looked very shaky in the second half as he failed to collect the tame shots and communicate with his defenders, which benefited Chiefs as Pefile headed home an easy goal into an empty net in the nick of time. Chiefs could have scored their second goal, but Zuko Mafayi’s thunderous shot went wide. In other SAB Regional League action, Young Ideas shared a 2-2 draw with Hearts in their physical game at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday. ADVERTORIAL: STANDARD BANK IRONMAN AFRICAN CHAMPIONSHIP
First-time Ironman triathlete chases ‘finish line’ dream HENDRIK Louw will be competing in his first Standard Bank Ironman African Championship. He is eager to put his mind and body to the ultimate test. Louw used to tip the scales at 120kg. Now a healthy 85, the goal weight he set himself to be able to compete at the Standard Bank Ironman African Championship. He achieved his goal at the end of 2016 after enlisting the help of Dave Sullivan of Wingman Multisport Coaching. “When (Sullivan) saw me in my bigger shape he reckoned I was built for endurance, not speed,” states Louw. The seed was planted and triathlon became an allconsuming passion and desire. “I rapidly improved my fitness and fell in love with the Ironman dream consisting of eating, sleeping and training: swim, bike and run,” Louw said. Commenting that when he successfully completed his first race, he would get an Ironman tattoo; Louw loves the Ironman lifestyle and spirit. “It spells determination and commitment,” Louw comments. He loves the intensity and considers it a way of life. However, getting to the start line of the 2018 edition of the Standard Bank Ironman African Championship has been a journey in itself. Louw was dealt a serious blow, in Kimberley, in September 2016. He had just received his Merida Warp 6 TT bike, when a reckless driver skipped a stop sign and took him clean off the bike. His goal for competing that April 2017 was shattered. Louw had small bone splinters in his ankle and shoulder, with the former being badly damaged. Severe soft tissue and skin damage complicated the ordeal. “I had two mayor surgeries and many
wound clinic and wound scrubbing sessions. But in Ironman spirit and with the support of (Sullivan) and other Ironman participants, I started the healing process. “After surgery, many physiotheraphy sessions, and months of biokinetics, I was up again and April 2018 became a reality!” It took 13 months, but in October 2017 Louw was cleared to start running – albeit at a slow pace – and got on a TT bike again. He swam, cycled on a stationary bike, and strength trained a lot during this time. Commenting on the support he received, “(Wingman Multisport Coaching) took me under their wing. I got my weight down through discipline and lots of training. I got a time trial bike, wetsuit and I am living my dream: to be an Ironman. “I held on to that dream which became a passion, a desire and I suspect an obsession. The Ironman dream and sheer support was amazing. “Everybody supported me to be able to realise my dream and a lot of people have been coming up to me to say that they would also like to try their hand at Ironman after seeing what it did for me,” Louw augments. However, in February of this year, horror struck again. “A second accident – another reckless driver – skipped a robot and swept my front tyre from under me; he spun me around and the motorbike foot peg fell on my ankle. I was pinned under my bike. However, by the grace of God and sheer determination, I was able to recover and pushed through.” An amazing story of “anything is possible” regardless of what life throws at you, Louw will be competing this April and is more ready than ever to make it down the 2018 Standard Bank Ironman African Championship finish line.

Teams up their game as season draws to an end SELBY MADIKANE WITH only a few games left until the ABC Motsepe League season draws to a close, certain teams failed to impress their coaches on Saturday, while others managed to emerge as winners. Butterworth-based side Matta Milan thumped Lion City 4-0 at Ngumbela Stadium in their bid to avoid the relegation zone. Tornado FC kept their hopes of winning a league title alive when they defeated EC Bees 2-1 at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane. PE Stars settled for a goalless draw in their away game against Butterworth FC at the Walter Sisulu University Campus Grounds. The home supporters of Try Again FC saw
their side go down 2-1 to City Lads at Stutterheim High School Grounds. Pondo Chiefs suffered a narrow 2-1 loss to Spears of the Nation at Mqeshwa Sports Field in the Bizana derby. The game that stole the show was between Sibanye FC and Highbury at Gelvandale Stadium. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. Swartkops Valley United Brothers (SUBS) could not play their game because their opponents, FC Buffalo, failed to arrive. The game was scheduled to take place at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Friday evening. According to SAFA Eastern Cape secretary Isaac Klaas, Mthatha City had been expelled from the ABC Motsepe following their failure to play three games in succession.

Stunning upsets in Mofa league SELBY MADIKANE A NUMBER of the so-called big teams in the Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Premier League were on the losing end of several matches this past weekend. The current MOFA Premier League champions, Manchester United’s, supporters could not believe when their side was held to a 5-5 draw by the unpredictable Young Ideas at Motherwell NU 11 Stadium. Manchester FC gave their supporters a surprisingly good result when they defeated the gutsy Young Madrid 4-1 in front of their home supporters, while Young Tiger also stunned the high-riding Highland Spurs when they shared a 1-1 draw in their match. The newcomers, Happy Stars, went down in flames in their 1-0 loss to City Rangers. FC Angels led the tough Crystal Palace into a 1-1 draw, while Royal Bucs rubbed salt into the wounds of Tomorrow Stars after they overcame them 1-0. Showvillage United Brothers accumulat-
ed three maximum points following their soft points over Amathole FC. Real Strikers similarly didn’t need to work up a sweat for their three league points after Valencia failed to produce the proper players’ cards. Real Aces played to a 1-1 draw against Wells United. Shining Stars walloped Swartkops Valley United Brothers (SUBS) 5-2.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE
Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull – Who will it be? THERE are few things as sweet as the hope and eagerness that accompanies the week before the start of a new Formula 1 season. Right now every enthusiast’s expectation is sky high. Their optimism and expectation are ready to be encouraged or sunk by the unpretentious but all-powerful stopwatch. On Friday morning, the cars will trundle out of the pitlane and onto Australia’s Albert Park circuit for the first official practice session of the 2018 season. A warm, fuzzy feeling will fill your heart as a smile spreads across your face: F1 2018 is a go. The famed part-time Albert Park circuit in Melbourne will host the season opener for the 22nd time. At 5.3km in length, it remains somewhat of an outlier in terms of layout. As it utilises public roads, and even part of a car park, it is more akin to a street circuit. These unique characteristics do have the ability to soften a car’s shortcomings as opposed to a track such as Bahrain’s Sakhir International circuit.
Twelve months ago in Australia, Sebastian Vettel stepped onto the podium and Ferrari made a clear statement of intentions. Ultimately, 2017 didn’t go the way the Italian team would’ve predicted or wanted, but they have learned valuable lessons from it. But Ferrari doesn’t start the 2018 season in quite the same standing as it did last year. A big question mark lingers over the Scuderia and if they have closed the gap to Mercedes or even have fallen slightly off the pace. Preseason testing was difficult to read, but still many persist with the opinion that Ferrari is not in Mercedes’ league. Instead, it’s Red Bull who has seemingly made the bigger step forward. But still, despite the dynamite driver pairing of Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen, their biggest Achilles’ heel remains the Renault engine’s power deficit. However, if the RB14 is what its preseason form has suggested then they may hit the ground running in Australia. Meanwhile, the midfield looks like
it is poised to deliver some close racing as several teams find themselves in close contention. The surprise of this pack may be the American Haas team who appears to have made a step forward in almost all areas. Contrastingly, Williams and Sauber are likely to duke it out at the back of the grid. For McLaren, who have endured harrowing reliability in preseason, there will be nowhere to hide. So many of the team’s issues over the last few years were heaped onto Honda’s shoulders. However, despite having a new partnership with Renault, the problems persist. Despite this, Fernando Alonso and co are optimistic about the season and insist there is nothing to be concerned about. We may pour over countless points of data and hundreds of laptimes from testing and scrutinise every picture taken in the two weeks, but the fact remains that the true pace of the 2018 contenders will only be revealed come race day.
