Tramways terminus to be transformed REPORTER It has been 132 years since the horse-drawn tram cars that transported Port Elizabeth passengers first click clacked on the concrete of the Tramways building. Now, the former tram and bus terminus is being transformed by specialist contactors, GVK-Siya Zama, into a development featuring a mixture of tourism, leisure, entertainment and office spaces. It will also serve as the new headquarters of the Mandela Bay Development

Agency (MBDA), that is driving the project. GVK-Siya Zama Quantity Surveyor, Clive Godfrey, believes that the team won the R40 million tender based on its long-standing reputation and vast experience in the building and restoration spheres. These include landmark buildings such as the Voortrekker Monument, Durban City Hall, Mandela Family Museum and Colonial Building. Since February 2013 the GVK-Siya Zama team has been hard at work restoring the Tramways building to its former glory, whilst carefully preserving its many heritage elements.

After being abandoned in the mid-1990s, the building fell into disrepair - being exposed to the harsh coastal elements and becoming a haunt for vagrants who would make fires that resulted in some sections burning down. Godfrey says, “Many parts of the building were badly eroded, corroded and rotten due to water ingress and fire damage. Our first task was to get rid of the debris left behind by vagrants and gut the building out. Then we had to demolish and rebuild sections of the floors, walls, and roof that were either unstable, superfluous due to layout changes or needed to be replaced with new, more energy efficient materials.” In addition to refurbishing the building, the GVK-Siya Zama team was tasked with con-

No water and sanitation for RenDalton farms LIZEKA TANDWA RESIDENTS of RenDalton farms in St Albans say they have been without water and sanitation for over 14-years with no response from the Municipality about resolving the escalating problems which they say is affecting their health drastically. RenDalton, a small community of 29 farming families in the area, have been dealt a heavy blow by the municipality having to walk kilometres to the lake in the Rocklands area to find water. RenDalton resident, Gavin Preston, said he has been living in the area for over 14 years and has informed the municipality countless times of the situation in his area but nothing has been done to date. “Whenever I contacted the municipality about our problems they always say they do not have existing funds to solve this issue but we still have to pay rates and taxes. I have to travel long distances with drums to fill up my water tanks but this has caused a lot of health issues in my family because of the dirt that flows into the tanks when it is windy.” Preston said he and his family have been to the doctors countless times because of the water contamination. “ No one cares about us, neither the municipality nor our DA councillor that we appointed; there was even a representative of the Ministry of Water Affairs who came to the area yet no one has done anything about the situation,” said Preston. DA Ward 40 Councillor at RenDalton, Vicky Knoetze, however, said the areas in Ward 40 that have never had water connections are parts of St Albans, parts of Rocklands and parts of Crockert’s Hope/Dustpan as well as all the informal settlements in the area. “Most of these areas are considered peri-urban, rural and agricultural and have never had water connections. However, the Municipality has expanded over the

past years and the characteristics and needs of many of these areas have changed as the city has encroached upon the socalled urban edge.The Constitution of 1996 also entrenched certain rights in terms of access to water which has also added a new dimension to the issue of access to water and sanitation in general,” said Knoetze. Knoetze said since the issue was brought to her attention on 18 June 2012, she immediately sent it to the Municipality’s Director of Water and Sanitation, Barry Martin, for further investigation after several meetings with Martin’s department met with no success or progress. “Finally, after having no success with the Department of Water and Sanitation, I decided to write to the office of the Minister of Department of Water Affairs. “There are water pipes going past most of the areas. It should therefore not be a problem to budget for these connections,” wrote Knoetze to a letter to the Minister. Municipal Spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki, said the area at RenDalton consisted of farming communities and based on their land zoning as generally being agriculture they were self-sufficient with respect to water and sanitation services.” Mniki said water was available per water tanker. Once the applicant had paid the required cost it would be delivered to the required site. In response, Preston, however, said these tanks were a health hazard and the municipality needed to do more to ensure that the rights of families in the area were not infringed. Eastern Cape Directorate of Water Sector Support and the Department of Water Affairs said they had made a submission to the Minister of Water Affairs regarding the problems in the area late 2013, and were waiting for a response from the office.

Don’t let your books collect dust; donate them now LIZEKA TANDWA AS part of an initiative that is aimed at improving literacy among our future leaders, PE Express staff handed over books, donated by staff and readers, to Dr Viljoen Primary School on the first day of school. Dr Viljoen Primary School principal, Solomon Gouws, said he was grateful and honoured to receive the donation, saying that the school would not be able to operate without such donations. “We are not a rich school. We are in a trying area in the city and it’s great to see that the kids

appreciate this gift and still value the importance of conventional books,” he said. Headgirl at Dr Viljoen, Unette Bouwer, said she still saw a need to read books as it helped kids like her with their grammar and spelling. “We need books because they teach us to be responsible with our language and also help broaden our minds,” said Bouwer. Headboy, Jaden van Jaarsveld, asked the public to donate more books to his school and other schools to help children learn and grow their vocabulary. “I am happy at the school and love the teachers. They help us a great deal,” said Van Jaarsveld.

PE Express Editor, Elizabeth Giliomee, said the book campaign would continue to run throughout the year. “Readers are encouraged to donate their books that are only collecting dust in their cupboards. We will have a collection point at our offices and will hand the books over to deserving children’s organisations,” said Giliomee. Ek is 51 jaar oud. Getroud, twee kinders, 18jarige seun in matriek, dogter 23, wat nog studeer. Is ’n gebore Baaienaar. Het gematrikuleer aan Andrew Rabie in 1980 en BA Tale aan NMMU gestudeer. Het ’n liefde vir skryf en veral vir Afrikaans. Mooi, keurige taal is vir my strelend en inspirerend. Ek skryf graag oor mense, gebeurtenisse, snaakse karakters, ware lewensgebeurtenisse en soms dinge wat ’n ma na aan die hart lê. Ek is ’n natuurliefhebber en hou van stilte en slegs die geluid van brekende branders of ’n naguil wat roep. Ek is ook mal oor sport. Die skryf-ding moet egter uit, want dit is my passie. Ek beleef nou ’n fase van my lewe, waar ek al my tyd vir myself het. Met die ouderdom kom wysheid ook. Dit is juis nou wat ek MOET skryf, want elke dag is ’n bonus. Tyd is ’n voorreg, daarom moet elke mens dit benut. Ek dink ek kan sê dat ek oor verskillende fasette van die lewe gaan “blog”. Dinge wat mense raak.

And the name Miracle Kids is very apt for this extraordinary centre which was founded five years ago by Genevieve Hendricks, a qualified psychologist. “We see miracles here every day. Children who came to us being paralysed and unable to do anything, have since become able to walk, communicate and have been enrolled in schools,” Hendricks said proudly. Miracle Kids is the only one of its kind in the Northern suburbs, offering not only a daycare facility, but also rehabilation, stimulation and integration. “I believe every child has the right to achieve his or her full potential. Today they are taking care of 32 children with various disabilities. The biggest obstacle is to transport the children from their homes to the centre and back, as the centre currently has no minibus. Miracle Kids Centre for Children with Disabilities recently moved into new premises in Bethelsdorp and offers occupational, speech and physiotherapy for children between 1 and 17 years old. The children are accommodated from 8am until 3pm and receive breakfast and lunch. AT the end of last year Nissan launched new models in its Almera and Sentra range with the two basically switching places in the Japanese manufacturer’s range of models. Ocean Series Round 7 on Sunday ROUND 7 of the Nelson Mandela Bay Ocean Racing Series takes place this Sunday morning on Hobie Beach from 9am. Participants can take part in any one of the following events; Dischem 1km or 2km Ocean Swim, Kingfisher FM 5km Beach Run, Swirlers 5km Beach Walk, or the Crickley Dairy Kids 1km Beach Run/

Walk for children 12 years and under. There are medals for category winners and all finishers in the Crickley Dairy event sponsored by Sync Tooling and Project Services. All finishers receive a chilled BOS Sports Drink and are included in the lucky draw prizes which are presented

immediately after the event on the beach. The feature lucky draw prize up for grabs is R1 000 cash each race day. The Series is only open to members with online registration for membership only R50 and possible on www.oceanracingseries.com or at the beach on Sunday morning from 7.30am.
