Who are our Senior Citizens of the Year?

ENIOR Citizens who do not let age stand in their way to make a valuable contribution to their communities, will be honoured at a gala event on Friday evening.

The winners of the Golden Oldies Fund raising Club and BLG Logistics Senior Citizen of the Year Awards will be announced at the function at the Summerstrand Inn. The prestigious awards, of which Port Eliza-

beth Express is a media sponsor, are predominately run by the Golden Oldies Fund raising club recognising the time and effort volunteered by senior citizens, making a positive contribution to the community. Categories are from ages 70-79, 80-89, and 90 and over. Nominees were assessed by a local selection committee and judging panel. “These are senior citizens who make a difference in the lives of others and who go above and beyond in all spheres in their communities,” said Juanita Krauspe of BLG Logistics SA. The finalists in the age group 70 - 79 years are:

Maggi Cunningham Maggie (79) is the founder member of Northern Lights School serving physically disabled children, coloured, black and Indian children who could not attend mainstream schools. She is also on the board of Executors of Cheshire Homes SA, as well as Seringa Association for the Aged and Busy Bees Women’s Association of her church, and is actively involved in the Sanctor Medical Centre. Her motto is “I pass through this world but once; whatever I can do, let me do it now for I shall not pass this way again.”

Cedric Pannell (70 ­ 79) After working for SA Railways, Cedric (78) retired in 1991 with 356 days annual leave due to him and took up knife making in 2009. Currently Cedric is the oldest active member of the Knifemakers’ Guild which says a lot about his ability, talent and enthusiasm. His talent is known throughout SA and his knives have found their way into collections in the US and also throughout Europe. When he is not busy making knives, Cedric keeps himself busy by doing handyman work in his neighbourhood.

Eva Prince (70 ­ 79) Being active in sport all her life, Eva (76) has provincial colours in gymnastics, netball, hockey and softball. Her love for sport got her involved in Cheshire Homes on a voluntary basis, where she became the chairperson and still gives exercise to wheelchair-bound residents. Eva has also started a fitness club for seniors in her community in order to improve their quality of life. Currently, she is an active participant at the Golden Games for Older persons representing ACVV Algoa Park, competing at provincial and national level playing netball, as well as singing in the Audrey Renecke Church Choir. The finalists in the age group 80 - 89 years are: Moegemmad Armien Bardien Moegemmad (84) shows there is a time and a place in every day for family, religion, sport, education and community matters. He currently plays tennis 4 days per week competing with players half his age from Monday to Thursday. Fridays are for mosque and weekends are for family and community work. He has held many titles on the EP Tennis Board up to 1971. The South African National Zakah Fund) is currently his life’s passion and work, serving the community in various ways, with collection and distribution of alms for the destitute, assisting early childhood development centres, and offering a bursary programme for community members to further their studies.
