Safe houses for people in distress REPORTER
T
he recent establishment of twelve (12) Safe Houses is being supported by Business Against Crime (Eastern Cape). The Safe Houses are the homes of community volunteers, who are willing to protect school children, women, and any other resident who requires a safe haven until official and professional assistance can be obtained. According to Business Against Crime (EC) Managing Director Bryan Howard, these are the first of many safe houses which will be established. “The establishment of Safe Houses is but one aspect of the ‘Rapid Urban Response’ pro-active crime-fighting project that Business Against Crime has been spearheading in the Metro during the past four years. “We realised that there was a dire need for safe houses in virtually each block in the Northern Areas and other parts of the metro, and we decided to be active and help in this regard,” said Howard. “Community volunteers living in the residential corridor between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage/Despatch are not only conducting regular patrols under the aegis of the police, but are also establishing houses of temporary refuge for residents in distress, known as Safe Houses,” Howard added. Howard said all the members and volunteers are members of registered Neighbourhood Watch Forums, Sector Crime Sub-Forums and Community Police Forums. “Each Safe House is occupied by someone who is trained to assist residents needing emergency assistance. The Safe House occupier has direct links with the local SAPS station, municipal emergency services, the local trauma/stress clinic, all local schools and churches, the poi-
sons information Centre, hospitals, as well as a reputable private security company, for 24/7 backup and support,” he explained. Howard said some Safe House operators also have 2-way VHF radio links with nearby “Safe House” operators, and “Rapid Urban Response”
patrollers and controllers. The 12 Safe Houses already completed are in the Northern areas, in places such as Jacksonville, Kwanoxolo, Arcadia, Timothy Valley, Barcelona, Ext 31, Ext 21, West-end and Bethelsdorp. Howard said they’ve trained ±3 000 volunteers
during the past two years, with some 1 500 actively patrolling their neighbourhoods. “This initiative is funded by our private-sector supporters; and we also provide all the training and support equipment courtesy of our generous corporate funders,” said Howard.

Grassridge’s wind boosts Motherwell REPORTER MOTHERWELL community stands to benefit from the R1.2 billion sod-turning Grassridge Wind Energy Facility on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth. According to the Department of Energy (DoE), the sod-turning last week of the wind-energy facility, heralded the start of greener energy in the Bay but also significant upliftment opportunities for the nearby Motherwell community. InnoWind’s manager, Nancy Williams, said the Grassridge Winds of Change Community Trust, which represents the interests of the Motherwell community in the project, is one of three investors in the Grassridge Wind Power project company, and as such will ultimately re-

Community representatives from Motherwell, together with project representatives from InnoWind and the Department of Energy (DoE), turned the first sods of the wind farm on October 16, marking the start of construction. The wind farm will be completed in early 2015 – and will operate for at least 20 years. The R1.2 billion wind farm was one of three awarded to InnoWind through the Department of Energy’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, with the other two projects being near Grahamstown and East London respectively. InnoWind project manager, Kevin Minkoff,

Deepavali celebrations add colour on Sunday REPORTER THE streets of Malabar will come alive with a colourful procession on Sunday October 27 as the Hindu community unites to celebrate Deepavali – the Hindu Festival of Lights. While the actual festival will be celebrated by Hindus all over the world on November 2, the PE Deepavali Coordinating Committee has organised a joint celebration a week earlier as it has been doing for the past six years. The committee was established in 2008 by members of the various Hindu organisations and some of the sports clubs in the city. Convenor of the Coordinating Committee, Thina Balakistnen, said, “The primary objec-
tive of the committee is to mobilise all the Hindu organisations to make a meaningful contribution, not only to the youth in Malabar but also to the greater community in the metro while celebrating the festival.” “Deepavali or Diwali literally means a row of lights. Symbolically its aim is to light up our lives. The term Vasudeva Kudumbakam means the world is one, so let us embrace this theme and endeavour to be more compassionate, and show love and respect to all,” Balakistnen said. Champion dogs return with medals PORT Elizabeth have two of the best trained dogs in the world after the dogs, Khyber and Noodle, collected silverware at the FCI Agility World Championship in Johannesburg recently. Heather Potter and Khyba represented South Africa in the large dog team category while Nanette Perold and Noodle represented the country in the small dog team. The Large dog team came second, receiving a silver medal overall in their category. On the
contact round, the team was also placed second on the podium, as well as in the jumping round. Potter and Khyba finished fourteenth overall in the individual rounds - a remarkable achievement since it was their first attempt at international level. Potter trains under Justus Truter at Ibhayi Jumping Academy, where she and Khyba spent six months of physical and mental training in preparation for the championship. “It was an exciting and wonderful opportunity and I would not have swapped it for anything in the world,” Potter said. Nanette Perold with Noodle, representing the small team, was placed third on the podium, receiving a bronze medal. In the contact and jumping rounds, the smalls were on the podium in third place on both rounds. Nanette trains under the guidance of Rory Shortland at Baakens Valley Training Club. “It was truly a great experience, being exposed to world class agility. I learnt a lot and can’t wait to apply it in the future,” said Perold.

Eastern Cape junior Children’s Choir is looking for new voices REPORTER THE only junior regional choir in the country, the Eastern Cape junior Children’s Choir (ECjCC), under the leadership of Hanlie Young, will be holding auditions on Friday, November 1 at the Charlo Primary School.

This is an opportunity for talented singers who will be in Grade 1, 2, 3 or 4 in 2014, to join the choir. The ECjCC rehearses once a week, on Wednesdays, from 16:00 – 17:30, at Cillié High School. Performances are mainly scheduled for weekends, but depending on the event, some may be scheduled for weekdays. Children planning to audition must contact Blanché at 0 082 657 1701 as soon as possible to book their individual audition times. They are also welcome to send an email to
info@ecjcchoir.com. Prospective choir members may sing any song they like at the audition. No sheet music or special equipment is required. The Eastern Cape junior Children’s Choir annually presents the Bamba Festival. Junior school choirs are invited to take part and to join in the fun. Bamba, the official choir teddy bear – who is actually the inspiration for the Bamba Festival – can’t wait to hear the lovely new voices at the auditions. Prospective choir members are encouraged to bring their own teddies along to meet Bamba. Apart from several remaining performances towards the end of the year, the ECjCC is planning to record a DVD with singer Anthonie Bougas. It should be ready in time for Christmas. NMMU is calling for proposals by local artists interested in producing a public artwork to enliven the campus environment. Proposals will be adjudicated by the NMMU Visual Arts Collection Committee and artists will be requested to work with the commissioning agent to finalize their proposals for the adjudication committee. This year, parents will be able to enter their babies by uploading a photo on the PE Express website from November, 6. The annual PE Express Christmas Baby Competition is aimed at making the day even more special for babies who are celebrating their first Christmas. In addition, Baby City, who recently opened a branch in Moffett on Main LifestyleShopping Centre and Pro-Design Photographers & Beauty Salon, are sponsoring prizes
for the winners and runners-up in all three publications of the OP Koerante group. The participating titles are PE Express, Kouga Express (Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp) and Sunshine Coast Express (Port Alfred and Grahamstown). In addition a website winner will also be chosen by way of readers’ votes. The winning babies of the different publications, as well as the website competition, will win a first prize of R1 000, while the first runner-up will receive R750 and 2nd runner up R500 (for each publication) from Baby City. Open day to find forever homes for AACL pets REPORTER THE readers’ response to the campaign the Port Elizabeth Express is running in conjunction with the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) to find homes for 30 pets as part of PE Express’ 30th anniversary, has been so overwhelming that the AACL is holding an open day for people to view the dogs this Sunday. In the past two weeks since PE Express’s launched this campaign, the AACL have done many home-checks and people are waiting to meet the dogs. Chaining of dogs is cruel and illegal THE AACL warns people that chaining a pet to a pole is not only very cruel but is illegal too. According to Linda-Louise Swain from the AACL, of the 10 animals who died in the fire in Malabar Extension 6 last week, one was chained to a pole and could not escape. “Two dogs that were in a confined area were burnt to death. The AACL is also looking for donations of wooden pellets and materials to assist more people to close their yards rather than chain their dogs.
In the “looking for a forever home” section this week is Blackie (3), another prime example of why the Animal Anti-Cruelty League is totally opposed to chaining and hoping to bring in stricter measures to curb this. Blackie was chained and the chain was never loosened, with the resultant neck injury. Fortunately, Blackie was found in time to reverse this damage. This is not always the case and many chain injuries have caused pain, suffering and resultant death.

Elvis Blue sing in sy hartstaal ANNA PAUW IN sy hartstaal loop sy fluweelstem soos stroop. Elvis Blue het onlangs ’n Baaise draai gemaak om met PE Express te gesels oor Afrikaans – sy splinternuwe CD wat reeds groot opslae maak. “Ek is ’n storieverteller en dis heerlik om my stories in my moedertaal met mense te kan deel,” het Elvis gesê. Behalwe vir ’n aangrypende weergawe van Johannes Kerkorrel se Hillbrow – wat Elvis saam met die Mzanzi-jeugkoor sing – het hy self die musiek en liriek vir al die snitte op die CD geskryf. “Hoewel ek nie in die afgelope jare musiek in Afrikaans opgeneem het nie, het ek nooit opgehou om in Afrikaans te skryf nie.” Dit het tot gevolg gehad dat dié blouoog-seun van die Suid-Afrikaanse musiekbedryf uit meer as 50 van sy eie liedjies kon kies voordat hy ateljee toe is. Die CD-omslag is ’n Afri-
kaanse foto-mosaïek. “Ons het foto’s van alles wat lekker Afrikaans is gebruik. As jy mooi kyk sal jy dinge sien soos koeksisters, windpompe, die FAKembleem en nog ’n klomp beelde wat sinoniem is met mense wat dié taal praat.” Oor die voortbestaan van Afrikaans het Elvis geen bekommernis nie. “Ek kén die harte van mense wat lief is vir Afrikaans, en daar is nie ’n kat se kans dat hulle sal toelaat dat die taal ’n stille dood sterf nie.” Volgens hom is die kunste ’n goeie manier om die welstand en groei van ’n taal te bepaal. “Wanneer daar groei in die kunste in ’n sekere taal is, kan jy verseker wees dat daardie taal gesond is,” het Elvis gesê. Hoewel al die CD’s en meeste van sy konserte in Engels was sedert hy Idols gewen het, het Elvis gevoel hy is dit aan sy ondersteuners verskuldig om ’n Afrikaanse CD vry te stel. “Ek het agtergekom dat die oorgrote meerderheid van my ondersteuners Afrikaanssprekend is en wou graag iets spesiaal doen om hulle vir hul ondersteuning te bedank.” Intussen deurkruis Elvis die land met konserte. “Ek dink die enigste manier om wérklik jou ondersteuners te bedank is om by hulle uit te kom.” Volgens hom sal Baaienaars sal beslis ook in 2014 weer die geleentheid kry om hom op die planke te sien. . Amanda Strydom brings ‘State of the Heart’ to her hometown ANNA PAUW FRAMESBY High old pupil, Amanda Strydom, will celebrate the 20th anniversary of her acclaimed one woman show, State of the Heart, right here in her home town. Strydom wrote State of the Heart in 1993, and won the Dalro and Showtime awards for Cabaret of the Year. This timeless love story gently pokes fun at the Afrikaner and gives a glimpse of the history of South Africa between the twenties and the late seventies. The heroine, Maxie de Meyer (a ‘Boeremeisie’), falls in love with Raymond G. Bartlett (a dashing ‘rooinek’) who also happens to be an R.A.F fighter pilot. The drama unfolds in the tradition of a good old radio serial, straight from the Springbok Radio era. Show organiser, Pieter Rademeyer, said it is indeed a privilege to have Strydom celebrate the 20th anniversary of this acclaimed production in Port Elizabeth. “Strydom is one of the best South African actresses, singers and playwrights, and she is one of PE’s own.” According to Rademeyer, the show has broad appeal. “Afrikaans and English speaking people will easily recognise themselves,
as Strydom masterfully interweaves humour, stereotypes and fantastic music to tell an epic, proudly South African tale.” State of the Heart is in the Little Theatre at the Athenaeum in Belmont Terrace at 7.30pm on Saturday, November 2. Why is Mallett so quiet? IT’S NO certainty, of course – but then in life what ever is? But if you’re saving up to buy the old girl something for Christmas, and know a friendly bookie you might just try this. It all stems from silver-haired Nick Mallett, one of the game’s shrewdest commentators, who knows when to keep his mouth shut. Indeed, when Nick does this you know something’s afoot. Did you notice on the SuperSport TV show after the two Currie Cup semifinals last Saturday, when the presenter was putting his team through the hoops, with the usual: “Okay, let’s hear it from you guys – who’s going to win the Currie Cup next Saturday at Newlands? Will it be hometown Western Province or the hungry visiting Sharks?� When it came to Mallett’s turn to give his view, what did he say? Well, almost nothing,
besides looking embarrassed and giving his version of the time-honoured, “Yah, well, no, fine;� before adding: “Sorry, guys, I’d rather not say anything.� Most unusual for the usually eloquent Mallett, whose sudden shutdown suggested he could do with some cough-drops. Perhaps what it really suggested was that Mallett, a true Kaapenaar, was somewhat embarrassed because, even with homeground advantage, Mallett’s true feelings are that Keegan Daniel’s Sharks might just reverse last year’s final defeat by Province. By remaining silent – more or less – he was probably just watching his Ps and Qs. Would you go that route? Then again perhaps it’d be better just to wait and see. What can be said is that Saturday’s final will almost certainly present rugby lovers with a truly tasty dish of flyhalf rivalry. Indeed it’s a meal that
could well decide the outcome of Currie Cup 2013. Pat Lambie when given the chance, has all the skills of a born flyhalf, plus courageous defence. Allowed off the bench at last, he showed this to the full in the Sharks’ 33-22 semifinal defeat of the Cheetahs in Durban. His 26point share of Sharks’ total would have beaten Cheetahs by itself. But in leading Province’s charge in their 33-16 defeat of Golden Lions at Newlands with 22 points of his own, Demetri Catrakilis gave notice of giving Lambie’s present dominance of flyhalf excellence a full go. Remember the ‘60s and the Piet Visagie-Jannie Barnard duels? Oh, wow! Talking of which, with its present crop of flyhalf wealth, South Africa’s cup in this department is running over – and then some!
Add to the two already mentioned-the following: Sharks’ 20-year-old Fred Zeilinga, Cheetahs brilliant though brittle Johan Goosen, and, of course, the man in the national team’s driver’s seat, Morne Steyn. But back to the big decider. Does Mallett fancy the Sharks to pull it off? That’s his secret. It’s certain to be an epic battle though, fore and aft. Province may be slight favourites, and it could boil down to the two flyhalves. For the sake of the game and its true spirit, two of its best exponents – Dwane Vermeulen and Bismarck du Plessis, well knowing their sins last week in this regard – should remember that even in the hottest heat of battle, dirty play is unacceptable. So what do you think about Mallett’s possible gut feeling? We’ll know by late afternoon on Saturday. It’ll be close. Very close.

The evaluation days offer the Jury the opportunity to reacquaint themselves with the vehicles and specific aspects such as aesthetics, build quality, ergonomics, fuel consumption, environmental friendliness, safety features and value for money, to name but a few. The Jury will also have access to independent performance test data, comparative pricing and specification data from RGT Smart, as well as comparative parts pricing data, compiled by Malcolm Kinsey. While all of the models are deemed to represent examples of outstanding automotive engineering, there can be only one winner and, in the eyes of the COTY Jury, that model will epitomise allround automotive excellence – the sole criterion for Car of the Year. History Beckons In India THE Formula 1 paddock heads to one of the most unique countries on the planet as India hosts its third Formula 1 race. From the culture to the people to the food India stands out as one of the most distinctive venues on the Formula 1 calendar. The possibility of hosting an Indian Grand Prix has been in the works from as early as 1997 and after years of negotiating New Delhi was announced in 2007 as a future Formula 1 race host. The first Indian GP was received with much fanfare and praise as it made its debut in 2010. The Budhh International Circuit is similar to Korea’s Yeongam circuit despite not being
as technical in nature. The steep uphill climb and the blind apex into turn three is the highlight of the first sector which is otherwise dominated by power hungry straights. The second sector progresses with a mixture of medium to high speed corners which is capped with a short, slow speed final sector. The elevation changes may not be evident on television but provide a challenge to drivers with off camber and blind entries to some of the turns. Muck Run entries flow INTEREST in the second edition of the Muck Run, sponsored by the Edge Financial Group and backed by Powerade and Virgin Active, is growing rapidly ahead of the event on November 9 and 10. A 2km Kids’ Muck Dash (11 years and under) takes place at 2pm on Saturday, November 9 while the adults (12 years and older) get to choose from one of two sessions – 3pm on Saturday the 9th or 10am on Sunday, the 10th. The Muck Run is a 5km untimed bush trail run around 14 exciting obstacles guaranteed to get the participants dirty. The event, managed by Zports and hosted at Bushpig Adventures in Kragga Kamma, is open to teams of 4 or solo participants with entry available online (www.muckrun.co.za) or at Brian Bands Sports and News Cafe at the Boardwalk.

Staying in the water, Wayne Jones and Jessica Roux maintained their Season 9 unbeaten record with wins in the Dis-Chem 2km Ocean Swim whilst Jason Jones and Rebecca Newman were placed second in the men’s and ladies’ race respectively with Bruce Campbell and Liza Bright claiming the bronze medal positions. The Swirlers 5km Beach Walk once again saw Juan Slabbert and Taryn Ferreira stepping it out for the gold medal, followed home by Colin Korkie and Mile Vermaak whilst Johan Ferreira and Laura Munnik took the bronze medals on offer. Bay welcomes Tri Nations netball teams NELSON Mandela Bay is this week hosting an action-packed week of international netball until Friday October 26, as the Tri Nations Netball Series takes place at the NMMU indoor sports centre in Summerstrand. South Africa’s SPAR Proteas will host England, and Trinidad and Tobago, in a thrilling showdown of three of the world’s netball top 10teams. Nelson Mandela Bay’s, Zanele Mdodana, will be making her return to the South African Team in the centre-court position of wing defence, after recovering from an injury. Tickets are being issued free on a first-come first-served basis and supplied via the local netball authorities. Schedule matches will be on the NMBT web-site events calendar www.nmbt.co.za. The matches will be broadcast live on SuperSport as well as in the UK and New Zealand television.
Jaci Howell, said “Green and Gold Victory” was the selected theme for their Gala Dinner Fundraiser aimed at invoking emotions of unity and pride, not only for their sporting hero’s but also for the country. “We wish to emphasise the role of this nostalgia towards solving bigger issues that face us as a country. We feel that our selected guest speakers are profound examples of the kind of courageous souls that inspire the best out of our nation.” he said. Howell said the funds raised from the event
would be in support of The Tutudesk Campaign, saying, “The aim is to supply Tutu desks (previously called lap desks) to underprivileged schools. The Ben Nyathi Primary School in Kwazakhele will be this year’s recipient. We wish to raise enough funds to supply 320 desks to the students of the school, thereby creating a more dignified learning experience.” Howell said they had been fortunate in receiving generous support from various institutions. The Plantation has sponsored their
venue for the second year in a row; Above and Beyond productions has sponsored the sound and staging. Varsity College said they would like to extend a warm welcome to the public on their event. Tickets cost R190 per person or R350 per couple, including a three-course meal, and a motivating address from each of the guest speakers.
