Celebrating Heritage Day
T
ODAY South Africans celebrate National Heritage Day, also known as National Braai Day. Jan Braai, whose real name is Jan Scannell, started the Braai Day initiative in 2007. This initiative aims at positioning National Heritage Day as South Africa’s annual day of celebration, and all South Africans are encouraged to unite around fires, and celebrate their diverse cultures and traditions on September 24 every year. “. . . what Jan Scannell had in mind with the Braai Day initiative . . . is nurturing and embracing a common South African culture, which is shared across all races and genders. Not one South African person can tell you that they have never witnessed a braai. Even in rural areas they light a fire and put their meat on it to cook.” – Archbishop Desmond Tutu (The Times 12/09/2008) See page 27 for one of Jan Braai’s delicious braai recipes.
