Protest against N2 development gains momentum LIZEKA TANDWA

VER 500 people have already signed on in a petition against a proposed development by the municipality which will see a new, integrated residential and retail suburb along the N2 in the Hunter’s Retreat area next to the Baywest Development. The proposed development includes retail as well as residential components and accompanying infrastructure in response to the opportunities which are opened by the Baywest Development. Protesters against the new development say it will run through the Baakens River Valley and could cause irreparable damage to one of the area’s crucial ecosystems leading to increased flooding in the rest of Port Elizabeth. The Save the Baakens River Valley campaign was launched in collaboration with the Baakens Valley Preservation Trust with the hopes of having 1 000 signatures before the July 3 deadline set by CEN Integrated Environmental Management (IEM). CEN IEM are the independent environmental consultants who will undertake an independent environmental assessment of the proposed development. Rose Buchanan, who is leading the petition against the development having consulted other environmentalists and doing research in the area through her master’s degree in landscape architecture, said no development at all should take place at the source of a river. “The Baakens River is the lowest point running through Port Elizabeth and thus a large portion of the city’s storm water runs directly into the river. By hardening the surfaces in the catchment, the amount of storm water running into the river increases, thus causing flooding. The development proposal involves a large amount of hardened surfaces which will result in an increase in storm water runoff into the river. “It will also mean that the quality of the water in the river will suffer due to an increase in pollution from storm water run-off. This is very bad news for the fish in the river and in particular for the Red Fin Minnow which is almost extinct,” she said.
According to the CEN IEM, the municipality’s proposal (which is in its preliminary stage) is to develop an integrated residential settlement, and the required services infrastructure and roads. A strip of business uses, retail and showrooms is planned along the N2, between the N2, and along the planned collector distributor, to complement the land uses provided in the Baywest development and to maximise the benefit of visibility and accessibility provided by the N2. Approximately 3 019 residential
units are planned on 71ha of land. In addition to housing, the development will include schools and crèches, businesses and retail facilities, community facilities, churches, and public open space. The development footprint comprises about 52% of the total site, excluding bulk roads and infrastructure. The remainder will remain as open space, which includes the NMBM’s critical biodiversity network on the site. Buchanan said due to this development the whole city will suffer as the Baakens River
runs from the edge of the city right through to the mouth at the harbour. “The impacts will include a decline in biodiversity, extinction of rare fish in the river, the loss of unique plant species and an increase in flooding. “It will also negatively impact on Hunter’s Retreat which is on the edge of the wetland. Their lovely open space will now be replaced with integrated housing,” said Buchanan.

Protest against N2 development gains momentum Continued from page 1 Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki, said their proposed project will be guided by the NEMA EIA process, public participation, as well as the specialist studies and other issues that have to be considered before the plans are implemented. “The proposed development is subject to Environmental Impact Assessment in terms of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998, and its Regulations. The due processes will
be followed.” Mniki said council had considered the project proposals as far back as 2007 in response to public development interest in the various land parcels in this precinct area. “It is, however, noted that land preparation is a long and tedious process and it will still be some time before development will actually take off.” Mniki said beneficiaries to the land will be people who need housing and qualify for the requirements that will be stipulated when the housing development is ready for occupation.

Defending the Baywest development, Baywest Managing Director, Gavin Blows, said, “As developers of Baywest City, we have gone through a thorough public participation process, during which there was overwhelming support for the development. We also followed due process and undertook an exhaustive environmental impact assessment, which the Department of Environmental Affairs carefully considered before giving us the go-ahead to develop. “Additionally, we have stationed independent conservation officers on site to ensure that the environmentally sensitive areas are protected. We are adamant about protecting the environment, which is why 25% of the Baywest City site is cordoned off as an environmentally sensitive and protected area.” Blows added that the Baywest site was overrun with herds of grazing livestock, used illegally for quad biking and was prone to regular bush fires and preventing the rare cyclopia plant from propagating. “Since the Baywest development site, rare indigenous plant species have thrived, and we are removing all alien and invasive plant species from the area. This shows that development, when controlled, can add value to the environment and offer a long term solution,” said Blows. Dr Mike Cohen from CEN, who is the EIA consultant for the development, said, “Queries raised by any concerned member of the public will be addressed by CEN IEM unit. We are at the early stages of the development and have not yet assessed all potential impacts. We have appointed a team of specialists to undertake independent studies on a range of issues. Young PE entrepreneurs design solutions for Africa REPORTER IMAGINE a tablet PC that can operate without electricity, running on full power even through power outages, a device that will be an answer to help residents in areas that have intermittent access to electricity. You no longer have to imagine as two Port Elizabeth entrepreneurs have come up with an answer – the Millbug Vuya Tablet PC, a solar powered tablet PC that will help users with no electricity.. Sabelo Sibanda (30) and Thulilsile Volwana (22), from Walmer, who are part of the Shanduka Black Umbrellas, conceived the tablet through their company, Millbug (Pty) Ltd. According to them, the tablet will retail for no more than R1499.99 to ensure that it is within reach of its intended users. Millbug, which concentrates on technology hardware and web development, believes that the Vuya Tablet PC will allow for greater participation of Africans in the digital economy. Less than one percent of content online is created by Africans, they say, and this alarming statistic needs urgent attention. “Instead of celebrating the rise of the Afri-
can consumer, this device seeks to catalyse the rise of the African producer,” said Sibinda. Volwana is an Economics graduate at NMMU and Sabelo Sibanda is an MBA student at the Edinburgh Business School at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland. Sibanda said Millbug was registered in April 2012 and it came about through a chance meeting with Fred Roed, of World Wide Creative. He made them aware of the opportunities in technology and, more specifically, the vast opportunities in South Africa. The Vuya Tablet PC is described as “a rugged, yet aesthetically pleasing tablet that effortlessly runs on the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system.” “Vuya means ‘be happy’ in isiXhosa and it is the intention of the Millbug Vuya Tablet to bring happiness to those that need it the most. For this reason, this tablet has a 1.2 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of storage a photovoltaic (solar) power source as well as the ability to be charged using USB or a conventional power outlet,’ said Sibanda. GMSA igloos encourage domestic waste disposal REPORTER GENERAL Motors South Africa (GMSA) rolled out colourful new waste separation igloos at the Struandale plant in celebration of World Environment Day which is commemorated worldwide on June 5. Having made significant progress in reducing waste in the manufacturing process, the company rolled out waste disposal igloos where employees can dispose of their domestic waste such as glass, plastic, paper and metal, before reaching their work stations. Cuppa for Cansa held in support of kids fighting cancer LASHEIGH LUCAS
with a room at one of the care homes. The Provincial Hospital is also planning to give TLC space in the building to allow parents to stay with children while they are being treated. Guest speaker at the event, Chantal Africander, spoke about her 11-year-old daughter Gabby Africander who sadly passed away in March last year. “Gabby was a brave girl and she was always eager to help the needy,” said Africander. Gabby was diagnosed with brain cancer in December 2011. In February 2012 Gabby had her first radiation treatment. She later became disabled in her left side and could no longer swallow. “It was a very difficult time for me but I learnt that when you feel weak and broken you should put your trust in God,” said Africander.
THE Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), along with Shoprite Checkers, recently hosted an inspiring event for children fighting cancer. Shoprite Checkers also handed over an R18 000 cheque to the association. “All the funds will be used for cancer survival care homes,” said Marius Devres of Tough Living by Cancer (TLC). TLC is a programme for children and teens diagnosed with cancer, or affected by cancer, where support is provided to the family as a whole. The care homes are equipped with medical supplies and also provide a toll free line for any enquiries about TLC. The Dolphin Bikers also sponsored TLC

Mobile solar charging stations create buzz at NMMU LASHEIGH LUCAS IN a first for the Bay, new mobile solar charging stations have recently been installed on Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University campuses. There are 15 stations on the university’s South, North, Second Avenue, Missionvale and George Campuses. “The Mobile Solar Charging Unit offers a solution to our already depleted energy supplies and an opportunity to alleviate some of the pressure on our overloaded power grids,” said NMMU Senior Support Services Manager Nikki Brown. Students are able to utilise the unit to charge their phones at no cost to them. These charging stations each have the capacity to charge 72 phones at once using only the power of the sun. “The charging stations are very helpful because many times I forget my cell phone charger at home and the stations allow me to make a quick stop to charge my phone,” said third year Education Foundation Phase stu-

The stations require six hours of direct sunlight to fully charge their batteries and can continue to give charge for seven hours without any sun at all. “It is the ‘coolest’ idea ever! Especially for those days when I forget my charger at home,” said second-year Public Relations Management student Ronwynne Marks. Another Public Relations student Dini Nombewu said it is very convenient for students to charge their phones. The University has entered into an agreement with Full Nine Yards for the placement of 15 such units across the Port Elizabeth and George Campuses. “This venture assists the NMMU in providing a service to our students, revenue through advertising on the unit and in addition meets our aim for a green environment,” said Brown. By the end of this year, tablet docking stations will also be added to the units.

Globetrotting chef dishes up new menu for Boardwalk Hotel FROM cooking in a small restaurant in the English countryside, to the British Army, a yacht in the Mediterranean and for Prince William and Princess Katherine on their honeymoon, chef Paul Bain says he has now come to “rest” at The Boardwalk Hotel. Paul, executive chef of The Boardwalk Hotel, Convention Centre and Spa, introduced the media and members of The Boardwalk’s board of directors to the new menu of the Boardwalk Hotel’s Kipling Brasserie at a special event last week. To give PE Express readers a taste of the new menu, Paul has agreed to share his Pork Belly recipe this week. Paul started cooking while still at school, in a small restaurant in the English country side, serving very rustic food. Before his 17th birthday, he joined the British Army and completed a formal apprenticeship before completing almost 9 years’ service. The Army is where he started to travel, with stints in Central America, around Europe, the Mediterranean and on active service on Desert Storm. In the mid 90’s, Paul decided it was time to travel alone, and moved to the USA where he stayed for 2 years, followed by a stint on a small Caribbean island, and a year working on a cruise ship. The Channel Islands, and Kent in the UK were next, before he moved to SA, initially in Durban, with his wife, Pauline, and started a family. Positions in Cape Town and PE followed, but the travelling didn’t stop there. “I was fortunate enough to take on some freelance positions on a private yacht in the Mediterranean, and in the Seychelles where I was part of a small team put in place for Prince William’s honeymoon,” said Paul.
He says now that he has come to rest at the Boardwalk, where he is challenged every day between work and his two young children Jasmin (9) and Ashleigh (6).
Chef Paul Bain’s Slow Roasted Pork Belly With Clams And Chorizo (Serves 4) INGREDIENTS:
1.8kg of Pork Belly preferably with skin removed and bone removed. 1kg clams 1 Chorizo sausage Onion, finely diced 70g butter Parsley Thyme Rosemary Garlic 500ml white wine 500ml water
Have a good look over the pork, and trim any exccess fat and gristle. Rub the meat on both sides with a small bunch of thyme and rosemary, and a clove or two of garlic. Roll the pork belly like a Swiss Roll and tie with a non-plastic string. Ask your butcher to do this for you if need be. Place the pork, with the remainder of the herbs and garlic, in a roasting tray, with 2 glasses of white wine, and two glasses of water. Cover the tray tightly with foil, and place in a preheated oven for about 1 ½ hours at 160 degrees. While the pork is doing its thing nice and slowly in the oven, finely dice an onion, a chorizo sausage and chop a small bunch of parsley. Set this aside until you’re ready to finish the dish. You can add more garlic if you like, a chopped chilli if the fancy takes you! Once the pork is very tender, remove it from the liquid onto a plate or tray and cover with the same foil you just used in the oven. Strain the liquid and keep for later.
In a small pan, drop 30g of butter and the diced chorizo sausage. Once the nice red-coloured paprika oil starts to release itself from the sausage, add the diced onions and washed clams; 1kg would be an ideal amount. Pour the reserved cooking liquid in with the clams, and cover with a tight-fitting lid. With a sharp knife and hands made of steel, slice the still hot pork belly into as thick or thin slices as you like, then sprinkle with a little salt. If you season meat with salt too early, it tends to dry the meat out a little and can make it toughen up. Remove the lid from the pan, and by this time the clams would have opened up; add a little more white wine or cooking liquid if needed to stop the pan drying out. The liquid needs to be reduced a little and start to thicken up. Add a good 40g of butter, and the chopped parsley; cook the sauce further until the butter has melted. Arrange the pork slices onto plates, or a platter, and spoon the clams, onions and chorizo onto the meat slices, and don’t forget to use that great sauce too. Children with body dysmorphic disorder ACCORDING to research, body dysmorphic disorder is a chronic mental illness, wherein the afflicted child is concerned with body image, manifested as excessive concern about and preoccupation with a perceived defect of their physical appearance. Children with body dysmorphic disorder have perpetually negative thoughts about their appearance; in the majority of cases, a child suffering from body dysmorphic disorder is obsessed with a minor or imagined flaw. Afflicted children think they have a defect in either one or several features of their body, which causes psychological and clinically significant distress or impairs occupational or social functioning. Body dysmorphic disorder often co-occurs with depression, anxiety, social withdrawal, and social isolation. What Is Body Dysmorphic Disorder? Body dysmorphic disorder is a condition that involves obsessions, which are distressing thoughts that repeatedly intrude into a child’s awareness. With body dysmorphic disorder, the distressing thoughts are about perceived appearance flaws. Children with body dysmorphic disorder might focus on what they think is a facial flaw, but they can also worry about other body parts, such as short legs, breast size, or body shape. Just as children with eating disorders obsess about their weight, those with body dysmorphic disorder become obsessed over an aspect of their appearance. They may worry their hair is thin, their face is scarred, their eyes aren’t exactly the same size, their nose is too big, or their lips are too thin. Because of the distorted body image caused by body dysmorphic disorder, a
child might believe that he or she is too horribly ugly or disfigured to be seen. Signs and symptoms: Children with body dysmorphic disorder say that they wish that they could change or improve some aspect of their physical appearance even though they may generally be of normal or even highly attractive appearance. Body dysmorphic disorder may cause sufferers to believe that they are so unspeakably hideous that they are unable to interact with others or function normally for fear of ridicule and humiliation about their appearance. They can become secretive and reluctant to seek help because they fear that seeking help will force them to confront their insecurity. They may feel too embarrassed and unwilling to accept that others will tell the sufferer that they are suffering from a disorder. The sufferer believes that fixing the “deformity” is the only goal, and that if there is a disorder, it was caused by the deformity. In extreme cases, children report that they would rather suffer from their symptoms than be ‘convinced’ into believing that they have no deformity. What causes body dysmorphic disorder? One of the most well-known sufferers of body dysmorphic disorder is Michael Jackson. Although the exact cause of body dysmorphic disorder is still unclear, experts believe it is related to problems with serotonin, one of the brain’s chemical neurotransmitters. Poor regulation of serotonin also plays a role in obsessive compulsive disorder and other anxiety disorders, as well as depression. Some children may be more prone to problems with serotonin balance, including those
there. Sometimes the most challenging part is helping a child accept a new idea of what might help. Body dysmorphic disorder can be treated by an experienced mental health professional. Usually, treatment involves a particular type of talk therapy called cognitive-behavioural therapy, which focuses on the thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and helps to correct the pattern behind the body image distortion and distress. A therapist can help a child examine and change his or her faulty beliefs, resist compulsive behaviours, and face stressful situations that trigger appearance concerns. Sometimes, but not always, medication is used with the therapy. The treatment takes time, hard work, and patience. Support from parents can help a great deal. It is often useful for parents to be involved in some aspects of the treatment, too, especially if a parent has been participating in the child’s compulsions by providing repeated reassurance. Parents in this situation need to know how to best respond to their child’s anxiety, distress, and requests for reassurance. It’s also helpful to tell the therapist about any family members who have experienced other conditions that involve obsessions and compulsions, anxiety disorders, or depression. If a parent is dealing with body dysmorphic disorder, depression or another related condition, it’s important to mention this and for the parent to get treatment too. If a child with body dysmorphic disorder is also dealing with depression, anxiety, feeling isolated or alone, or dealing with difficult life situations, the therapy also can address those issues.
with family members who have problems with anxiety or depression. This may help explain why some children develop body dysmorphic disorder but others don’t. Cultural messages can also play a role in body dysmorphic disorder by reinforcing a child’s concerns about appearance. Critical messages or unkind teasing about appearance as a child is growing up may also contribute to a child’s sensitivity to body dysmorphic disorder. But while cultural messages, criticism, and teasing might harm a child’s body image, these things alone usually do not result in body dysmorphic disorder. It’s hard to know exactly how common body dysmorphic disorder is because most children with body dysmorphic disorder are unwilling to talk about their concerns or seek help. But compared with those who feel somewhat dissatisfied with their appearance, very few children have true body dysmorphic disorder. Body dysmorphic disorder usually begins in the teen years, and if it’s not treated, can continue into adulthood. If a parent is concerned that their son or daughter has body dysmorphic disorder, medical assistance should be sought. A careful assessment can help to clarify what’s causing the distress and whether body dysmorphic disorder is behind it. Many times, children with body dysmorphic disorder are so focused on appearance that they (and those who love them) believe the answer is about correcting the appearance. The problem with body dysmorphic disorder lies in the obsessions and compulsions, which distort body image and make those who have it feel ugly. It’s hard for children to realize that, because they believe that what they perceive is truly

Almost time for Playhouse Drama Festival REPORTER HIGH schools and their pupils have until the end of June to enter for the fifth annual FNB Alexander Playhouse Drama Festival to stand a chance of winning amazing prizes including a R10 000 cash prize. The best performer, chosen by the awardwinning Deon Opperman at the final round in September, will receive a R35 000 bursary for the first year of their university studies at any University and in any faculty. Opperman said this year he would be challenging the directors and performers to dramatise a short story and present it as a 30-minute play. Opperman, who is a patron and chief adjudicator at the festival, recently conducted workshops in Port Elizabeth and East London on the structure of a story and directing a play. The four-hour workshops were given to aspiring directors, drama pupils and teachers, as a prelude to the 2014 FNB Alexander Playhouse Drama Festival for high schools which takes place in August.
His visit to Port Elizabeth and East London followed shortly after he was awarded in four of the five categories in which he was nominated at the prestige ATKV Mediaveertjies Award Ceremony for his TV Drama, Donkerland. In the past years Port Elizabeth schools have fared well at the festival, with Rother Swain drama pupil and Collegiate Girl, Donna de Jongh, currently studying at Rhodes University on her R35 000 bursary, which she won in 2011. Another Rother Swain drama pupil and Collegiate Girl, Caitlin Wiggill, is currently studying drama at Stellenbosch University on the R35 000 bursary which she won in 2012. Fresh plans set to uplift Bay art community REPORTER THE opening of Nelson Mandela Bay’s latest art gallery is set to breathe new life into the region’s art community, according to the artist behind the project. Nelson Mandela Bay-based artist Usen Obot’s passion for using art to tackle major social issues, as well as undertaking various community upliftment programmes using the medium, is set to receive a major boost with the opening of Galerie NOKO in Russell Road this week. The gallery, which is owned and run by Obot from the former Denton Properties offices, will kick off with an inaugural exhibit titled “Redefinition of the status quo – collector’s edition”. The opening of Galerie NOKO tomorrow (June 26) will feature prominent Bay art patron and businessman Phil Gutsche as the guest speaker. Local artists who are to be featured include Duncan Stewart, Charmaine Haines, Michael Barry, David Jones, Mbongeni Buthelezi, Phumla Matolo, Delphine Niez and Wehrner Lemmer, among others. “It is an opportune time to do something different in the art world,” said Obot. “This is not just art for art’s sake. I want to use the gallery to also address various functions, whether they are socio-political or HIV/ Aids-related. We want to create a dialogue.” One of Obot’s first projects will be to engage with underprivileged Bay schools which cannot afford either the finance or personnel for art classes, offering pupils free art lessons at the gallery where they will be taught by local artists keen to give back to the community. The gallery will offer a year-round exhibit of work by up to 20 artists – an attempt by Obot to become more encompassing and offer more deserving artists a platform for their work. Other initiatives include lauding the role of women in society in a women’s only exhibition in August, titled “Silk and Steel”, “to hear and see them speak to us via visual metaphor, and draw society’s attention to the importance, relevance and integral contributions of women.” Local artists such as Michael Barry, who heads NMMU’s Arts and Culture programme, have voiced

their support for Obot’s bold communityminded plans. “Usen is creating an alternative space for alternative voices,” said Barry. “We need that in the Bay because as the city grows, our artwork needs to grow.” Barry said too much Eastern Cape art talent had been “exported” to cities boasting a bigger art industry, but that was about to change because “there is something new happening to our art here with public art projects by MBDA and other new developments.” Part of the gallery would also be used as “a conference venue with a difference”, in between various artworks, said Obot, adding that the gallery’s trading hours would be week days 10am to 6pm, and Saturdays 9am to 4pm. In 2006, he co-initiated a travelling exhibition titled “Transition” that took exhibits to previously disadvantaged areas in the Bay. He also initiated the “NEWNOWNEXT” emerging artist project in 2008 which created a platform for emerging artists to exhibit their work. His own work, which includes abstract oil paintings, sketches and relief sculpture, has been exhibited in galleries in Chicago, Massachusetts, Memphis, Nigeria, Johannesburg and locally in the Bay. He has also been the Eastern Cape coordinator for the 2010 Spier Contemporary art competition, as well as a regional selector for the prestigious Absa L’Atelier competition, South Africa’s largest art biennial. He also participated in the Nando’s Worldwide Art Project which saw artworks become part of Nando’s restaurants across the world.

INDEPENDENT filmmakers Kevin Meiring and Brett Gieseke from Port Elizabeth recently co-wrote, filmed and produced a screenplay in the city for a short-film contest run by an Australian company, RØDE Microphones. The contest is held for film makers from all around the world. Their short-film entry, Connected, was inspired by the desire to create a short film that allowed for action, a touch of drama and of course a twist. “The challenge was to use RØDE audio recording products in a short film written specifically for their contest and also to show how their products were used in a short behind-the-scenes documentary,” said Gieseke. Connected tells the story about a man caught between his lover and a murderer. The film only runs for five minutes, “but it took over a month of preparation, production and post-production to get the finished product,” said Gieseke. All crew and cast members were locally sourced, many of whom had never worked in this type of production before. Film locations were scouted in and around Port Elizabeth. Kevin and Brett, both having had success in previous international film contests for brands such as Nickelodeon, Nedbank and Doritos, saw this as an opportunity to expand their capabilities using short film as a platform to enter the world of storytelling. “It was about pushing boundaries and creating something on an international level, using what we could in the time that we had,” said Meiring. Apart from hard work, inspiration and fun, the crew members came across a few challenges. The sound had to be recorded as close to perfect as possible. “Due to the limited time and ambient noise, the dialogue for the opening scene in the restaurant

Location also proved to be a difficult task, with the cast and crew members driving around the Colchester area looking for the perfect field scene. All cast and crew members also had to work on a budget and this meant they had to be creative when it came to different shots- such as the chase scene which involved filming out of a moving vehicle. “Working on this short film has been a game changer - knowing that we actually pulled something like this off in PE is a huge breakthrough for us mentally,” said Gieseke. The cast consists of Roche Killian, Daryl Thompson, Leah Moodaley and Caydn Martin. My show will bring memories back from music by Johnny Cash, Elvis, Billy Ray Cyrus, and much more, including my new song ‘Verskille’,” he said. The hour-long show will also feature guest artist Pierre Kapp, who has also been involved in various charity work with Minnie over the years. Kapp will be performing a solo, with songs such as “Umfaan Guitar Boogie”, “Last Date” and many more. Tickets cost R30 and the audience are encouraged to bring their own beverages. Mense van alle ouderdomme het van heinde en ver na die Baaise hawe gekom om ook so ’n ietsie te leer oor die Vloot, asook skeepsvervoer – en die missiele en gewere natuurlik. Die rye was lank en die son het gebak, maar dit was uit en uit die moeite werd. Daar is elke 20 minute ’n besigtigingstoer deur albei die skepe gehou. Besoekers kon sien hoe die skepe werk en hoe die kadette en bemanning van die vloot leef. Die kadette en bemanning van die vloot was mooi getooi in hul uniforms wat die belewenis nog meer interessant gemaak het. Die skepe is ten volle toegerus met gimnasiums en kombuise. Die Isandlwana het selfs ’n groot geweer wat ’n volle 360 grade kan draai en skiet, asook ’n landingstrook vir helikopters. Dié skip kan ook tot en met 860 lede aanboord neem, meestal lede van die vloot of spesiale magte. Dit is die eerste keer wat dié skepe ’n draai in die Baai gemaak het, maar beslis nie die laaste nie. Hulle is nou eers op pad Brasilië toe en dan Mosambiek, maar oor 15 maande is die skepe terug en dan kan almal wat dit hierdie keer gemis het, ook hierdie ongelooflike ervaring beleef.

The countdown has begun The Bay’s biggest disability awareness campaign is just one week from kick-off. During the five Wednesdays of July, PE’s public areas like shopping malls, police stations, banks and coffee shops, to name but a few, will be “raided” by able body businessmen of our city. Their mission: to decide for themselves whether mobility-impaired people, particularly people using wheelchairs, are being fairly catered for as far as universal accessibility goes. How will they do this? By spending four hours of their valuable time in a wheelchair performing various basic tasks. The past two years have resulted in some interesting feedback from our willing participants. The age-old parking bay issue pops up every time. “The awareness regarding the unacceptable abuse of Disabled Parking Bays, is tangible” says Jakkie Pieters, member of the APD Eastern Cape Provincial Council. ”There is no doubt in my mind that the Spar Wheelchair Wednesday campaign has raised the awareness on this matter. People are constantly talking to us about incidents where they have reprimanded parking violators. I also seem to find these parking bays more available when I need them,” Pieters added. Last year saw a local councillor taking part in Wheelchair Wednesday. As part of his four hour task he had to attend a council meeting. Needless to say he could not get into the Military Road venue. Fast forward one year and what do we find? The Military Road meeting venue has been equipped with a wheelchair lift and ramps to assist mobility-impaired councillors. The public areas and the toilets still need some fine tuning. The 2014 campaign will see 100 needy beneficiaries receiving free wheelchairs. It will also add funds to the coffers of the APD Job Creation Project which operates from the APD
Headqurters in 550 Paterson Road North End. When questioned about the extent of the Job Creation Project, Executive Director, Brian Bezuidenhout, had this to say, “The Job Creation Project provides meaningful work to some 120 person with disabilities. The level of skills displayed range from work as basic as inserting string into parcel tags, and mounting the labels onto the range of Marina Sea Salt products to high level seamstress work where we do track suits and matric jackets for 29 schools in and around the region.” “There are success stories aplenty when discussing the advancement of people at the centre. It must be understood that most of our people would be sitting at home, were it not for the APD Job Creation Project,” said Bezuidenhout. “Issues like inaccessible public and business areas, the lack of a suitable public transport system, little or no basic education are just some of the reasons that place them fairly low down on the employment chain”.

position for the Austrian GP was Felipe Massa’s first since the 2008 Brazilian GP. Nico Rosberg lined up third while a mistake from Hamilton relegated him to ninth with no time on the board. Massa led away from the start but teammate Bottas fell to third behind Rosberg. It was Hamilton who blitzed the start to end the first lap in a sensational fourth position. The Williams and Mercedes cars were closely matched for pace on the supersoft tyres and it was Mercedes who led the way into the pitlane. Both Williams drivers were able to complete two more laps but it would cost them track position as Rosberg emerged to lead the train of Bottas, Hamilton and Massa. In the lead of the race was Force India’s Sergio Perez who started in 16th position. On the soft compound tyres the Mexican was able to run a long enough first stint to put him in the lead of the race. Despite a five-place grid penalty, from Canada, he was able to deliver consistently fast laptimes without putting a wheel wrong for all of the 71 laps. Checo is known for his ability of making the most of alternative strategies. Add to the fact that he had to overcome a grid penalty, and his sixth place finish was one of the drives of the day. As the Force India driver eventually pitted Rosberg was promoted to the lead of the race and by the end of the second round of stops the Mercedes pair were line astern in first and second. However, the Silver Arrows did not disappear into the distance as in previous races as Valterri Bottas kept the pair honest. Sebastian Vettel suffered his third retirement of the season when his Renault power unit failed. Both Toro Rosso’s drivers joined the retirement list to leave Daniel Ricciardo as the only Red Bull driver in the race. The Australian was able to finish eighth after overtaking Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg on the final lap of the race. Red Bull team Principal Christian Horner branded Renault’s performance as “unacceptable” and insisted that the supplier overcome its issues quickly. “There needs to be change at Renault. It can’t continue like this. It’s not good for Renault and it’s not good for Red Bull,” said Horner. The race ultimately culminated in a fight between Rosberg and Hamilton. The gap between the two was only two seconds but Hamilton was unable to make an impression on Rosberg. Victory in Austria has given Rosberg a 29point lead in the championship. Vodacom NMMU Madibaz retains unbeaten record LAST Friday night saw Vodacom NMMU Madibaz take another step in clinching the PEFA Premier League title with a convincing 3-0 beating of Warriors at the NMMU South Stadium. As early as the fourth minute, Onela Beqeza had a 20-metre shot saved by the Warriors goalkeeper. After some sloppy defence by Warriors Cloudius Sagandira squeezed the ball past the Warriors’ goalkeeper to open Madibaz tally. Madibaz went into the break one goal up. Ten minutes into the second half Cloudius Sagandira got his second goal and with a few minutes remaining in the match Zukisani Mtendani netted the students’ third goal. Madibaz are currently building a team to try to clinch the Varsity Football 2014 title which kicks off July 21 against North West University. Last Saturday, in a high scoring match, Callies outclassed NMB Municipality 5-2 on the Oval pitch. Callies scored two goals 10 minutes before half time from field goals by Zaahid Dolly and Chad Schimper. Gregory Damons, Warren Reid and Darryn Bamboo completed the scoring for 10-
men Callies in the second half. Central Acemates made light work of Motherwell Academy in beating them 3-0 at Victoria Park. Nceba Mroqoza netted Acemates’ first goal in the first half with Sobekwa Malobongwe and Bongani Matebese following suit for Acemates in the second half. Forresters now won 2 on the trot in overcoming PE Defence 4-2 on the EC Defence field. Forresters were 1 nil up at half time from a goal by Anele Yaya Gadlela. Defence came back strongly in the second half with goals from Mochekgecheckge and Nkonki. A few minutes later Ayanda Ace Mthethwa scored a brace to put Forresters 3-2 up. Mxolisi Mxo Mosima ensured Forresters’ win with a goal some 10 minutes before full time. In Kemsley Park PE Homerovers overcame KwaDwesi All Stars 3-2. Homerovers’ goals came from a brace by Siboniseni Fana and one by Le-Roy Hanse. Youth Report The PEFA Youth leagues were again in full swing in fine winter weather on Sunday
22 June with over 500 players from u9 to u17 comprising 45 teams from 14 different clubs taking to various fields around the Metro. In the u9 Division the Callies Bravehearts held the Priory Rangers to a 4-4 draw, with a brace of goals each by Marc Venter and Nicolas Hargreaves for the Rangers. Log leaders Callies Highlanders beat the St George’s Braves convincingly in a 6-0 win. In the u11 Division, Callies B put up a massive effort to hold second place PE City to a goalless draw at Londt Park, while Priory and FC Mabayibone from Walmer also ended in a draw with 3 goals each. In the u13 Division St George’s beat Highbury by 2 goals to 1 at the Bridgmead fields to clinch first place on the logs at the end of the first round with 24 points. Callies A follow closely with 21 points with United Brothers in third place with 15 points. The Callies u 3 B team put up a huge effort to hold FC Mabayibone to a 2-all draw with both Callies goals coming from the boot of Joshua Koen. In the u15 Division the St George’s Colts upset Callies A in a gutsy performance to
win by 2 goals to nil at the Union Olympic Sports Club fields in Park drive. Siya Bafu scored for St George’s with a first half penalty, while striker Hloma Ngcikwe rounded off a fantastic move to put the Colts 2-0 up in the second half. However this was not enough to displace Callies from top spot on the logs at the end of Round 1 with 20 points. The Hearts Eagles drew 2-2 with Kwadwesi All Stars while Highbury and NMMU also played out to a 2-2 draw. In the other u15 game Motherwell Academy thumped the Hearts Hawks by 6 goals to 1 at the Lawson Brown fields. In the u17 Division all teams had a well earned rest before the start of their Round 2 games. St George’s occupy top spot on the u17 logs going into Round 2, with Motherwell Academy and United Brothers in close pursuit in second and third place respectively. This coming weekend sees the u17 Engen Knock Out Challenge at the Gelvandale fields, with St George’s and KwaDwesi All Stars flying the PEFA flag high in this prestigious annual nationwide tournament.

Tackle the MBDA Urban Run ENTRIES for the fourth edition of the Nelson Mandela Bay Urban Run, hosted by the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), hits the streets from July 1 with discounted early bird entries available this week through the Urban Run website. A sell-out for the past two years, the Urban Run is a fun and exciting festival of activities drawing people back to the CBD to witness recent urban renewal whilst taking part in one of the city’s biggest charity runs. This year participants will ‘Tackle the City’ in support of those with life threatening illness and disabilities, amongst them former rugby and athletics stars, being cared for by Cheshire Homes, who have had their promising future cut short by accidents and left paralysed
and in need of constant care and supervision. The Urban festival includes a fun Kids Urban Run, on Saturday, September 20, where children between the ages of 6 and 15 will tackle the city over a 2.5km course with at least eight fun obstacles along the way. This year the children will be ‘Tackling the City’ in support of Reach for a Dream to help realise the dreams of those fighting life threatening illness. The feature race, a very social and fun 10km obstacle race through the CBD takes place on the Sunday morning starting and finishing at the Balcony of the City, the Donkin Reserve. This spectacular event sees participants dressing up and having fun, most novices to this distance, as they tackle no fewer than 15 exciting urban obstacles as they wind their way through
