Lifestyle audits announced for mayoral committee members REPORTER EXECUTIVE Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Athol Trollip has announced that as a show of transparency and accountability, the entire NMB Mayoral Committee will undergo lifestyle audits. Trollip said the coalition government has taken a strong stance against corruption by freezing dubi-

ous contracts and suspending officials accused of fraud. “We must lead by example, always ensuring that as leaders of this city, we are beyond reproach. “This is why we have chosen to undergo lifestyle audits, as a reaffirmation of our commitment to being an honest, transparent government,” he said in a statement. The mayor said that the Democratic Alliance-led coalition govern-

ment in the Bay will work with various state institutions, such as SARS, during the audit. “This is the first time an entire mayoral committee will be audited in this way, setting the tone for integrity and honesty in government. We are unwavering in our commitment to keeping corruption out of this metro. “I urge (national) President Cyril Ramaphosa to follow the lead of this

NMB coalition government by conducting a lifestyle audit on all of his cabinet members. “As government leaders, we must be more action than talk,” Trollip added. He said corruption in all three spheres of government in South Africa is deeply embedded and as such, high-ranking officials and public representatives have managed to amass unimaginable wealth

through dubious means. “We do not tolerate this in Nelson Mandela Bay. This exercise will ensure a level of accountability on the part of people, who have been entrusted with leading the City’s administration. “Clean governance demands sincere leadership that is able to hold its officials accountable, be it their own, without fear or favour,” Trollip said.

Nelson Mandela University celebrates first paramedic graduates REPORTER SOUTH Africa has a critical shortage of qualified paramedics. It is a scarce skill, with a total of just under 2 300 qualified advanced life support paramedics. To grow the number of professional paramedics in this country, Nel-

son Mandela University has been offering its Bachelor in Emergency Medical Care (BEMC) programme since 2014 – and yesterday celebrated its very first 15 graduates. The university is one of just four tertiary institutions offering the qualification in South Africa. “The need for paramedics is massive,” said Nico Louw, who heads up

the university’s BEMC programme. “There is one paramedic for every 22 000 members of the population. In the Eastern Cape, that ratio is even worse: one paramedic to 120 000 people.” Fourteen of the 15 graduates have chosen to work in the Eastern Cape. Louw pointed out that paramedics are different from ambulance staff, who only need to complete a four-week course in basic life support to qualify for an entry-level job. They can go on to complete a threemonth intermediate life support course after working 1 000 hours. However, Louw says there are over 100 000 people with the basic qualification and just 16 000 with the intermediate qualification. “There is an oversupply of staff with the basic qualification, and not enough of those with a higher qualification.” Should someone with an intermediate qualification go on to complete a further 10-month advanced life support course, after completing 1 000 working hours, they would then qualify as paramedics – however, these days, this

three-tiered short course system is being phased out in favour of a threetiered tertiary qualification structure, namely one and two-year higher certificate and diploma programmes and the four-year degree course. This is part of a drive by the Department of Health to elevate the level of education of all emergency care personnel in South Africa. Louw said while a paramedic’s skills were essential, they were not easy and the university tried to prepare the students for any situation through a series of endurance events during their studies. “Our working environment is unique. It’s outside, in the sticks, in the gutter, in the valley, on the beach, in the surf, in hotels, in flats, in shacks – that’s where we go to treat patients. The endurance events students must complete include a 36-hour endurance event, where first-year students are dropped off and have to hike, swim or paddle from point A to point B, some 60 to 70km away. Second-year students must complete

“Masiphakameni”, which Louw calls “the 48-hour shift from hell”. “Never will they ever experience a worse shift than this. It starts at 7am, on campus. We give them many realistic yet challenging simulated calls.” In third year, the students embark on a “Wilderness search and rescue hike,” where they spend five days in the mountains in a simulated search for lost hikers, working in partnership with the Air Force, the Mountain Club of South Africa and the SAPS dog unit. “In fourth year, we simulate an international rescue mission scenario,” said Louw, who himself has assisted in international emergencies, including rescue efforts in Nepal in 2015. “It is dangerous to be a paramedic – and there have been many instances where paramedics have been targeted by criminals, while on the job,” he said. Despite this, he is passionate about the profession and about training tomorrow’s practitioners. “I love what I do and am thrilled to be celebrating our first BEMC graduates at Nelson Mandela University.”

Record 300 000 tourists visit Addo in past year REPORTER FOR the first time in the Addo Elephant National Park’s 87-year history, in excess of 300 000 visitors passed through the park’s gates during the previous financial year. A total of 305 510 guests were tallied between April 1, last year and March 31, this year. This represents an increase of 15% for the same period in 2016/17 with 265 585 guests to the

park. Slightly over half of these were international tourists at 158 162 (52%), while 146 091 were South Africans (47%) and 1 257 were visitors from SADC countries. Dissected into day and overnight visitors, 82% or 250 232 were day visitors, while the remaining 18% or 55 278 were overnight guests. The majority of South African visitors to the park originated from the Eastern Cape at 101 374, which represents 69% of the total, followed by 21% from the Western Cape.

Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom were the park’s top three overseas markets, which represented 55%, 10% and 5% of the international market respectively. Park manager Nick de Goede said, “We are elated by these statistics. Not only does it tell us that the park is a destination of choice for so many people but that confidence, both in the area and in the country, is also picking up. “Our staff work exceptionally hard all year round to ensure that all our visitors receive excellent customer service. They do so under extreme conditions at times, as catering to the needs of all these people is no mean feat. “By putting best practices in place on the conservation front, we are able to provide top quality game viewing and a myriad activities all cen-

tred on our core function of nature conservation. The amount of day visitors, who made up 82% of our visitors over the past 12 months, tells us that the majority of people passing through our gates do so to enjoy the park’s fauna and flora,” De Goede continued. There are a number of activities in which guests to Addo Elephant National Park, located just outside Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape, participate. These include self-drive game viewing, guided game drives, bird viewing, walks and hikes, horse trails and a 4x4 trail. For others wanting to spend more time in the park by overnighting, an array of accommodation options varying from camping and caravanning to chalets, rondavels and tented camps to more luxurious four-star options is available.

Vandalism of pot plants continues NWABISA FUNDE THE destroying of pot plants is beginning to raise concern as to whether this current pattern could be instigated by the same culprits. Members of the community voiced out their anger on Facebook last week after Ward 39 councillor Margaret de Andrade shared a post on the social media platform that showed pot plants at Baywest Boulevard drenched in what appeared to be an oily substance. In a more recent incident, plants were removed from pots along Cape Road and were tossed across the road. “The vandals do not respect the municipal property and our greatest concern is that people will now start stealing the pot plants,” said De Andrade. Various members of the community have said the type of plants that are planted in these pot plants are incorrect. De Andrade said that she doubts that this could be the reason for the pot plants to be damaged. The Ward 39 committee members, together with the neighbourhood watch, will be keep watch on a regular basis in order to prevent any further incidents of vandalism around the area.

New Port of Ngqura milestone enables revenue growth REPORTER THE completion of the R360 million Admin Craft Basin (ACB) in the Port of Ngqura has opened up opportunities for revenue growth in this young developing port. The new structure will be home to the port’s three tugs and one pilot boat soon, freeing up Berth C101, which was designed to handle revenue-generating vessels. “Having had no facility to berth the tugs was always a limitation for the port in terms of revenue creation. This significant investment in infrastructure demonstrates TNPA’s confidence in the future capabilities of this expanding port,” said Zanele Ntantala, the senior engineer who managed the project.

The jetty pile construction in the dry.

“The long-term, future development of the port was taken into account during design. “The position of the facility, located at the root of the eastern breakwater, allows unhindered developments in the long term.” Construction on the project started in February 2015. As much as the structure is in the middle of an operational port, the construction was done in the dry. That took time, as the contractor had to build a temporary working platform and piles for the ACB finger pier. The pier is a suspended concrete deck on piles. The water was pumped out of the finger pier site area so that piling and other work could commence. It was pumped back in again after completion. The facility is made up of a 300m long break-

water armoured with rock and a 120m long finger pier capable of handling six tugs or four tugs, a pilot boat and other small craft as per the current medium-term requirement. Provision has also been made for easy extension of the pier to accommodate two extra tugs should there be a need for more tugs in future. The design of the ACB provides ample opportunities for easy construction to berth additional small craft, such as tugs and SANParks and SAPS vessels, in future. The channel of the ACB, as well as the basin, is 8.3m deep. The contractor, Basil Read, with subcontractor Sub-Tech, was responsible for dredging. The role of TNPA’s Port Engineers Department was mainly to ensure that the project

was delivered within budget, according to specification and that it fulfils its purpose. Port engineer Gerrit du Plessis, senior engineer Zanele Ntantala, harbour master Thulani Dubeko and port manager Tandi Lebakeng played key roles in ensuring its success, along with TGC project manager Siyabonga Gadu and his team, together with Kevin Stone, the ECI joint venture project manager, and construction manager Lennard Coleske. There is only one outstanding construction task to be completed before the tugs could move to their new home. This entails the final completion of dredging, which is anticipated to be completed by end April 2018. TNPA Lighthouses also has to install navigational equipment on site.

Criminal record for failure to submit tax returns THE South African Revenue Service (SARS) has warned that taxpayers who do not submit their tax returns will end up with a criminal record. In a statement, the revenue service said it had embarked on a new initiative with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to prosecute non-compliant taxpayers, including prominent South Africans, who have failed to submit returns. “Taxpayers who are found guilty will end up with a criminal record. The initiative has already seen its first conviction in Port Shepstone last week,” the statement said. SARS said failure to submit a tax or VAT return is a criminal offence in terms of the Tax Administration Act and Value-Added Tax legislation. “The campaign marks an intensification of SARS’s Outstanding Returns Project that was launched towards the end of last year when SARS aimed to raise awareness amongst taxpayers about outstanding tax returns. SARS has over the past few years experienced an increase in the non-submission of returns across all tax types, including PAYE, VAT, corporate income and personal income tax. At the end of March this year, SARS’s outstanding returns book showed that active taxpayers owed SARS approximately 30 million returns, in many cases showing that multiple outstanding returns were due by a single taxpayer. “The decision to resort to enforcement of compliance through criminal prosecution is a last resort. At this stage, 36 dockets have been handed over to the NPA.” The significant drop in the submission of returns was one of the key indicators pointing to decreased compliance and was highlighted by Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene during the announcement of the tax revenue collection figures for the 2017/2018 financial year recently. – REPORTER

Post Office warns against scam THE SA Post Office has issued a warning to the public to be on alert of a parcel delivery scam. In a statement, the post office said members of the public receive phone calls by persons alleging to be from the customs division of the SA Post Office. The caller informs them that a parcel is ready for collection, provided they first pay “customs fees” into a bank account. “The SA Post Office does not require customers to make any bank deposit before parcels are released. In instances where SARS levy import tax on parcels

from abroad, the import tax must be paid at the post office counter on collection. “The customer will receive a point-of-sale receipt for this payment. In cases where the post office has the cellphone number of the recipient, the customer will receive an SMS requesting him or her to collect the parcel at a specific post office branch. The SMS will not request that funds be deposited into an account,” the statement said. The post office’s crime buster hotline is 0800020070. – REPORTER

AECI/Improchem het ’n nuwe projek, Barefoot in Africa no more, geïnisieer deur ’n nuwe soort skoolskoen te vervaardig.

New bus bays for Gelvandale ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL BRAND-new bus embayments have been springing up around Gelvandale the past month. The bays – five in Beetlestone Road, and the others in Springbok Street, Aubrey Street, Van Der Kemp Street and Gail Road, are not being built for buses though. The embayments are being built for “feeder” taxis which will ferry passengers to IPTS bus stops along Stanford Road, according to Ward 10 Councillor Andy Jordan. “The IPTS bus stops are far from where most

passengers reside, so these feeder taxis will make the bus service more accessible by taking people closer. “The fares for the feeder taxis will be included in the tickets purchased for the IPTS bus, so the feeder taxis will not take cash. Passengers need to only show their bus ticket.” The embayments are not the only change the ward has seen recently. Two outdoor gyms have been erected in Gelvandale and Schauderville. “I feel strongly about utilising open areas for outdoor gyms. Residents of all ages have been enjoying these gyms and these have deterred loitering and illegal dumping in these spaces.”

paign for World Book Day. The campaign was aimed at promoting reading for pleasure and highlighted the importance of literacy among young children. “Growing up I had a stutter and lacked self-esteem. Through reading and cultivating a love for books, I overcame this challenge. “Reading has the power to transform lives by lifting the youth out of dire circumstances and I believe that

education is the answer to unlocking our country’s potential,” said Maponyane. He read the popular Dr Seuss story “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” to an auditorium of eager learners who could not wait to meet their role model. Maponyane autographed and donated a copy of the book to the school. Novus Holdings is South Africa’s leading commercial printing and manufacturing company. Together with the New Africa Education

Foundation (NAEF), they have donated seven mobile libraries filled with a variety of children’s favourite books to each grade at Kama Primary. The mobile libraries can be wheeled from one classroom to another. The initiative forms part of the “Read to Lead” campaign, which aims to promote reading for pleasure and highlights why literacy is the gateway to a better future.

Winter drive assists the elderly REPORTER THE Algoa Bay Council for the Aged has once again called on local residents to support their annual winter drive which will wrap up on Monday. The council was established in 1961 when the need to co-ordinate services to the aged in Port Elizabeth was recognised. “We started rendering social work services in 1966 and opened Port Elizabeth’s first service centre for the elderly in 1967. “Algoa Bay Council for the Aged has been in existence for 57 years,” said Christa Terblanche, public relations officer and fundraiser for the council. “We are constantly striving towards im-

proved service delivery that will increase independence and equip the elderly and in particular the subeconomic elderly to face the challenges of aging in the community.” They have called on locals to donate any pre-loved and gently worn adult winter clothing and non-perishable food to help them bring joy and warmth to their beneficiaries this winter. The drive will end on Monday, April 30. Donations can be dropped off at the Algoa Bay Council for the Aged’s offices at Buffelsfontein Village in 17th Avenue, Charlo. They are open from Mondays to Thursdays between 07:30 and 16:00 and on Fridays between 07:30 and 15:00. For more info on the drive contact 041 368 8434.

Positive thinking keeps Marais family going ANIKA DE BEER A SERIES of unfortunate events have left a local elderly couple almost homeless, but not hopeless and they are now living proof that one is never too old to stand up again and use your talents to survive life’s challenges. Seymour Marais (79) and his wife Jean (76), who now lives in a retirement village in South End, lived a fairly affluent life for 37 years in Port Elizabeth, before they decided to move to Cape Town in 2005 to be closer to their only son and two grandchildren – a decision that cost them almost all they had worked for so hard. Through a series of unfortunate events, they lost their house in Lovemore Heights, their car and the accommodation they were promised. During the 10 years they spent in Cape Town, Seymour, who hails from Komga in Transkei, and Jean, who was brought up in Queenstown (now Komani), struggled to make ends meet. “I started teaching the piano because we had nothing; we only had our savings to live on. Eventually, we ended up renting a little flat that belonged to a church in Hout Bay,” Jean said. She first started teaching music at a little school in Llandudno before getting the opportunity to teach at the Kronendal Music Academy. “There was a piano in every room and there were violins, cellos, drums, flutes, recorders and clarinet,” Jean remembered. She initially taught only the recorder there before they approached her to teach the choir as well.

Finally, they managed to move back to Port Elizabeth in 2015 where they are now happily settled once more. Despite the numerous challenges they have faced, the Marais’s are endlessly positive that things will get better for them and, in the meantime, choose to focus on the many good memories they have made over the years. Jean and Seymour have been married for 54 years and according to her, they do everything together. “I looked after my mom and dad for 12 years. They stayed with us and when they passed away, Seymour told me to go and study. I always wanted to do singing and music. I was 50 years old and I went to UPE (now NMU) and got my Bachelor of Music degree,” she said. “I taught music at primary level at HF Verwoerd and Charlo Primary School. “After some time, the government did away with music posts at the schools and it was very hard for me to get a teaching post. So, then we had a clothing business.” Before things went downhill in Cape Town and while Jean was teaching in Llandudno, they saved up money and took a trip to China. “The guy who took us on the canoe said he worked with Jackie Chan in a movie once. I asked him to sign my book,” Jean laughed. “We’ve been to England and we’ve been around the continent (Africa) and all that, but nothing touches China. The people are so polite there and I suppose they have their fair share of crooks there and

so on, but we didn’t meet any. “And we found them to be very nice and easy to talk to,” Seymour added. Today, about two-and-a-half years after returning to Port Elizabeth, they keep active by taking walks on the beach and doing a 5km fun run every Saturday and they sell a number of things to make ends meet. “We’ve got a place to stay now, but we’ve got no money to live on,” Jean explained. Currently, Jean and Seymour sell a natural muscle rub, baked goods, such as cookies, fudge and rusks, and Jean offers piano lessons. “Last year, I was teaching piano, singing and recorder, but now I’m just doing piano,” she said. Their little enterprise has grown by word-ofmouth alone. They often drop off their sweet creations at a nearby hair salon that sells them and they recently baked goods for a wedding as well. “Jean was making fudge and giving it to everybody here and we decided that since people like it so much, we can start selling it,” Seymour quipped. “We survive. We just started with the baking and selling about two months ago.” “We’re finding it very difficult to get through to people. It’s going very slowly,” Jean added. Despite this, they stay positive. “We expect to go to China again soon and get another car as well,” Seymour laughed. “We manage, you know. We’re fine,” Jean concluded.

Despite losing nearly everything they had, Jean and Seymour Marais remain positive and dream about one day taking another trip to China. PHOTO:ANIKA DE BEER The biscuits that they bake are however such a hit that one of their customers phoned Port Elizabeth Express to share the couple’s inspirational story. For more info on the products they sell, contact Jean on 083 948 5712 or 041 582 1406.

FOTO:PRO DESIGN PHOTOGRAPHERS

Historical inauguration for Nelson Mandela University NWABISA FUNDE “WE are a world, a continent and a nation in transition”. This was said by Nelson Mandela University’s newly inaugurated vicechancellor, Dr Sibongile Muthwa, as the university took a step into a historical era under the wings of an allfemale trio. Last week the university held an inauguration ceremony welcoming Dr Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi as the university’s chancellor and Muthwa as vice-chancellor. Muthwa will be serving as the first African woman vice-chancellor in the history of the university.

“My journey has inspired my commitment to contribute to changing the trajectory of every young person whose life I have the privilege to touch,” said Muthwa. Her speech highlighted her gratitude to her late grandfather, Mfezi Muthwa, who she says (he) believed, and told her many times, that she could be anything and she could do anything. The vice-chancellor holds a PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London and an MSc in Development Policy and Planning from the London School of Economics. She will be taking over from Professor Derrick Swartz, who has

served the institution with distinction for two successive terms, since 2007. “I am indebted to Prof Swartz for his sterling and visionary work in laying these foundations and for his inspirational leadership over the past decade. “We will continue to strive, with great pride and humility, to live up to our responsibility of leading the only university in the world that carries Nelson Mandela’s name,” said Muthwa. The third woman to complete the historical all-female trio to lead the Nelson Mandela University is council chairwoman Nozipho JanuaryBardill.

THE Sweethearts Foundation, together with The Airports Company of South Africa, recently hosted a wheelchair handover ceremony at Rhubarb and Lime Café, during which four specialised wheelchairs were handed over to four deserving beneficiaries. The Sweethearts Foundation, a 100% non-profit organisation, collects plastic bottle tops and bread tags, recycles them and then uses the proceeds to purchase wheelchairs for those in need. The Airports Company of South Africa generously donated over R60 000 towards purchasing these much-needed wheelchairs. According to Ashley Nel, market-

ing director of The Sweethearts Foundation, the generous donation by ACSA really assisted the foundation in providing the wheelchairs. “Without the contribution of ACSA, the beneficiaries would’ve waited a very long time to receive their wheelchairs,” Nel said. While 450kg of bottle tops or 50kg of bread tags provides enough funding for a standard wheelchair, the wheelchairs handed over to the beneficiaries at this ceremony were specialised to each beneficiary, as children require wheelchairs which will not stunt their growth. Anyone can be a sweetheart, all you need to do is collect #Tops&Tags and drop them off at your nearest col-

lection point. Rhubarb and Lime Café, in St Georges Park, is one of the foundation’s honorary collection points in Port Elizabeth and has been an avid supporter of the foundation since 2013. Together with the help of sweethearts both nationally and internationally and corporates like ACSA, The Sweethearts Foundation has handed over 260 wheelchairs since February 2013. Visit www.sweetheartsfoundation.org or email sweethearts@ sweetheartsfoundation.org for more information to find a collection point or make a donation which could help change the life of one or more beneficiaries. – REPORTER

School honours principal by naming park after him JORDAN JOHNSON AS a tribute to him and his devotion to education and improving the lives of children, the Walmer West Primary school named its park after principal Johann Oosthuizen. The Johann Oosthuizen Park’s opening ceremony was held at the Walmer West Primary School alongside their lake on Friday. This was in honour of Johann Oosthuiz-

en who is retiring as the school’s principal after more than 40 years in education. Learners, parents and teachers all gathered to celebrate the career of a man they truly value. Two separate dance performances by learners were followed by a speech delivered by head girl Brooklyn Pienaar, expressing the school’s appreciation for all their principal has taught them. During the ceremony, Oosthuizen planted a tree next to the lake for learners to see

grow for years to come. He then shared some of his greatest memories of his career as well as a couple of inspirational pieces of advice for his learners. “Respect and discipline must come from within, not from without,” said Oosthuizen. “I am very proud to be standing at the end of such of a wonderful career and would not have wanted it any other way.” He shared some of the attributes he associates with his school, expressing how the

staff really do love their learners and care about their development and growth. Oosthuizen emphasised how important it is to set goals, as learners and as adults. He referred to the learners as his children, and urged them to always grow and keep progressing in life. After Oosthuizen cut the ribbon on the gate to officially open the Johann Oosthuizen Park, the ceremony ended with learners blowing bubbles throughout the park.

Director Rose Cowpar said, “I love the revue style format. There’s something for everyone and it’s a great opportunity to showcase the amazing talent in the cast, with everyone having their own moment to shine.” Angela Freer, last seen as Princess Snowdrop in last year’s pantomime, is the vocal director. The cast will see favourites, like Bennie Gerber and Khuselo Gqiba, take to the stage alongside fabulous newcomers and previous ensemble members to show that there is no shortage of talent in the Bay. Learners make the cut for leadership programme REPORTER PORT Elizabeth-based learners Kayline Terblanche and Lenay Maveline van Rooyen were among the 45 learners from across South Africa and Swaziland who were selected to participate in the 2018 national retailer, Boxer Superstores’, 16th annual Youth Leadership Programme (BYLP). In a media statement, Boxer said the highly anticipated event has become a sought-after experience. “Every now and then, everyone needs a little inspiration as a reminder to follow their dreams and take calculated risks. In wanting to ensure that our bright youth are empowered to make the right decisions and follow a promising path in life, Boxer Superstores partnered with Nedbank to host this year’s programme,” the statement read. The five-day adventure, all-expenses-paid youth leadership camp was aimed at equipping learners with soft and hard life skills. Boxer’s digital marketing co-ordinator Jaded Skinner said learners were required to

write an essay in response to the topic, ‘If you had just three wishes, what would they be and why?’. “The retailer received thousands of entries from across South Africa and Swaziland. “Each year the level of essay submissions improve in terms of structure, creativity and individuality,” Skinner said. Skinner said the topic presented this year allowed students the chance to express their inner-most desires and be as creative as they wished to be. “We enjoyed reading each essay and it was very difficult to select the top 45 as there were so many great entries,” Skinner added. “After five days of intense team building, discussions and bonding, strangers became friends and in no time, friends became family. “Each of the 45, who entered the BYLP 2018 camp, left with a new-found sense of self belief, confidence and appreciation for who they are and what they have. “The Boxer Youth Leadership Programme continues to shape the minds of today’s youth into powerful leaders of tomorrow,” the statement concluded.

Keep Caring campaign goes green Amy Erasmus’s Keep Caring campaign is saying goodbye to the black bag and hello to recyclable plastic containers. Through SS Agencies, MPact has sponsored Keep Caring with eight industrial containers to store all the donated clothing during its current drive. Last year the campaign ended up using a lot of black bags to store clothes, bedding and shoes. Many of these broke while they were moved and were replaced with more black bags. This is now a thing of the past. The current campaign is collecting clothes, blankets and non-perishables that can be dropped off at various locations throughout Nelson Mandela Bay until June 17. I saw this powerful Shamsi on a TV programme. Before I had suffered for years and I tried many people for help but all failed. I could not believe it when he showed me my enemies in form of a dream and whatever they were doing to me. Every single detail he showed me about my enemies was so true. Shamsi accurately read my fortune and told me all my problems without me speaking a single word to him. Within 6 days after his prayers, my husband left his girlfriend and came back to me plus my enemies approached me and confessed the bad things they had done to me. Shamsi also gave me a special ring to fix my financial problems, and a love crystal that made people at home and at work to like me, listen to me and do whatever I want, without me even having to ask.

She also helps people with: • Financial Problems • Love Relationship • Work Crises • Family Problems • Bad Luck Health Problems • and many more...

EXPRESS ON WHEELS: BETTIE GILIOMEE

Nissan’s new X-Trail packs a punch with features and price NISSAN is a big player in the crossover segment, both globally and locally, with its X-trail and Qashqai models, both of which received upgrades in the past six months as part of Nissan’s strategy to make their crossovers smarter and safer with Nissan Intelligent Mobility technology. In February, the X-trail and the Qashqai, were recognised among the top 25 bestselling vehicles in the world. Both vehicles have an array of features that ensure customers enjoy both off-road capabilities and comfort. Express on Wheels spent a week test driving both the new models on the mom’s taxi route. For this week’s column, we look at the revamped Nissan X-trail which sports a brandnew athletic exterior - a huge revamp of the rather boxy previous model. Nissan launched its revamped X-trail at the end of last year featuring a more muscular exterior and plenty of high-tech features. Its athletic exterior with panoramic sunroof (a standard spec on the top of the range X-Trail that was testdriven) and stylish interior creates quite an inspiring first impression. This SUV makes you feel like packing your bags for a picnic and taking to the road. But due to work commitments, there was no escaping the concrete jungle during the test week and most of the time spent with this state-of-the-art crossover was on the mom’s taxi route. The X-trail, however, certainly put a lot of pleasure into the daily urban commute. Peak hour traffic gave one the opportunity to while the time away discovering what all

the buttons are for staring at you from the dashboard or simply just admiring the spacious, comfy interior. The X-Trail sports several Nissan Intelligent Mobility advancements, which combine smart technology with innovative features to provide drivers with a safer and more comfortable drive. Potential buyers would also be glad to know that it packs a punch price-wise as well and one can purchase a seven-seater version of the X-Trail, in a choice of petrol or diesel, for under R400 000. Nissan Intelligent Mobility (NIM) for safety Among the stand-out features of NIM, I found the Intelligent Around View Monitor with moving object detection to be the most impressive. This assists drivers to park much easier by providing an all-round view of the vehicle’s surroundings. With this monitor, one can see with almost a bird’s eye view exactly how you are parked. Gone are the days of having to open the door to see whether you have parked neatly in between the lines or enough to the front. You simply check on the monitor and you can see exactly if you have parked like a pro. Other features that most motorists would benefit from on a daily basis is the Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention, which alerts the driver to the presence of vehicles in blind spots behind the car. The Intelligent Cross Traffic Alert is quite handy on the busy school or weekend shopping run – when backing out of a parking space, this feature can detect and warn the driver of vehicles that are approaching from behind. Other features of NIM are Intelligent Lane Intervention, which alerts the driver when it detects that the vehicle is straying from its lane. Intelligent Emergency Braking uses radar technology to keep an eye on one’s speed and proximity to the vehicle in front, and will alert the driver before engaging the brakes. Intelligent Forward Collision Warning helps alert drivers of an impending collision with a slower moving or stationary car and Intelligent Auto Headlights automatically changes between high and low beams when it detects oncoming vehicles at night. Exterior enhancements The upgraded X-Trail offers one the choice between 17- and 19-inch alloys as well as new exterior colours. It also sports a new “V-Motion” grille and bumper, revised headlights and signature daytime running lights. The front also features integrated fog lamps while the rear has LED taillights in

a redesigned rear bumper. The X-Trail shares a platform with the Qashqai, but the X-Trail is noticeably higher and longer than the Qashqai and there’s the option of a third row of seats. Interior upgrades Changes to the interior are mainly a new, thicker, leather-clad D-shaped steeringwheel and the use of nicer materials throughout, especially the double-stitched leather seats. The Nissan Connect centre console has an upgraded interface and there is a new gloss black trim with metallic accents. The X-Trail sports a versatile seating system and the second row offers plenty of space and comfort for those passengers as well. The 60/40 split seat slides forward for easy access. The seats also recline. The third row provides additional versatility and folds down completely to make a flat cargo floor. Ride The engine range of the new X-Trail remains unchanged and the X-Trail is available in petrol or diesel, manual or CVT automatic models. Nissan claims a combined consumption of 5.3 litre/100km. I got about 9.9 litres during my time of mostly city driving. The trip computer however stated a best consumption of 5.2 litre/100km. The X-Trail had plenty of power, combined with good road holding, well-balanced steering and smooth gearshifting. It simply makes driving such a pleasure. It also has good ground clearance to go off road without breaking a sweat, or the chassis. The range-topping X-Trail 2.5 Tekna CVT 4WD seven-seater is powered by a 2.5-litre petrol engine which delivers 126 kW and 233 Nm of torque. With this range-topping Tekna priced at R485 000, one will struggle to find another vehicle offering the same features in this price range.

Pricing:

The new Nissan X-Trail comes with Nissan’s class-leading six-year/150 000km warranty, a three-year/90 000km service plan and 24-hour roadside assist. Service intervals are at 15 000km and the new X-Trail is priced as follows: 2.0 Visia: R375 500 2.0 Visia 7s: R380 500 1.6 dci Visia 7s: R399 500 2.5 Acenta CVT 4WD: R434 500 2.5 Acenta CVT 4WD 7s: R439 500 2.5 Acenta Plus CVT 4WD 7s: R451 900 1.6 dci Tekna 4WD: R472 500 2.5 Tekna CVT 4WD 7s: R485 000.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

Azerbaijan GP Preview: Battle in Baku THE Formula 1 paddock is set for Baku this weekend as it jets into Azerbaijan for the fourth round of the 2018 season. On the back of the first three races, the teams will arrive at this weekend’s Grand Prix with a varying degree of mindsets. Ferrari should arrive in a fairly decent frame of mind, but all is not up to par in the Italian team’s stable. The general assumption would be that Ferrari would have learned from several dubious strategy calls in 2017 but, again, the calls in China left a lot to be desired. It is an area that in 2017 cost them race wins and if they are to genuinely take the fight to Mercedes, they cannot fall into the same hole this season. Notorious for taking Ferrari to task, the Italian media has delivered a scathing rebuke of the team’s treatment of Kimi Raikkonen. The Finn has started the 2018 season in fine form but was still, shamefully, used as a blocker

for his teammate during the Chinese GP. It’s a slippery slope Ferrari find themselves on. If they continue to sacrifice Raikkonen in aid of Sebastian Vettel, they will, undoubtedly, forfeit any chance of winning the constructor’s title too. And if Ferrari is in the market for a replacement of their last world champion, say someone like a Daniel Ricciardo, it must be careful as to what image they are projecting to prospective drivers. For Mercedes, Baku has turned into a mustwin grand prix. The German team finds itself in unprecedented territory having not yet won a race in the 2018 season. Regardless of the circumstances that led to Ferrari, and Red Bulls’, victories, the fact remains that Mercedes finds itself needing to respond. More so, Lewis Hamilton has looked decidedly off colour even in comparison to teammate Valtteri Bottas. Nevertheless, the team seems confident that it can bounce back.

“We just need to stick our heads together, stay calm, get the head down and come up with some solutions. Huge confidence in the team, they’ve proved that in the past,” says Toto Wolff. The Baku circuit is one where Mercedes should do well. The circuit in Azerbaijan is the third longest on the calendar as it comprises a rather unusual layout for a street circuit. The tight and twisting middle sector is bookended by long, power-hungry straits, which combines in the first counter-clockwise lap of the year. While the track hasn’t shown too much tyre degradation in the two years that it’s been on the calendar, it may prove a factor this weekend. In particular, Ferrari has taken an aggressive approach by selecting ten sets each of the ultrasoft compound while Mercedes has gone for nine and Red Bull for eight set of the softest compound this weekend. “Baku is a bit strange,” says Pirelli F1 boss Mario Isola. “Because it’s a street circuit but with a very

high speed straight. You have some sectors that are very, very fast, but, also, you have some parts of the track in the sun and some parts in the shadow.” The long straits may put Red Bull into some difficulty with overall laptime when compared to Mercedes and Ferrari, but they should in no way be discounted this weekend. The probability of a safety car around the exceedingly tight mid-sector is high and Red Bull’s strategy calls have already netted them a race win. Max Verstappen’s performance this weekend will be worth noting as the young Dutchman has not only been shown up by his Aussie teammate, so far, in 2018 but also has to iron out some recklessness from his own driving. The chances are good that this will be the weekend that Lewis Hamilton bounces back into form. The question is will Ferrari have the speed and more importantly the composure to stop him in his tracks, no pun intended.

Biko guides Young Tigers to 1-0 victory SELBY MADIKANE YOUNG Tigers FC wing Andile Ace Biko helped his side secure a hard-fought 1-0 win from the gallant Wells United FC during their Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Premier League clash at the Motherwell NU 11 Grounds on Sunday. The game was evenly balanced with the strikers missing clear-cut chances throughout the entire first half. Supporters saw their goalkeepers stopping powerful shots. The two sides went to the break deadlocked in a goalless draw. In the second half, Tigers took the game to United. United had some easy chances to score, but the forwards tried to score spectacular goals instead of focusing on placement. However, United paid the price when the referee awarded Tigers a penalty that was scored by Biko, who sent goalkeeper Khanya Bongco to the wrong side. Bongco was the busiest goalkeeper of the two in the second half. Sinethemba Zephe, Siyabonga Adonisi, Thembani Mancane Stefaans and Mongezi Tom were the most outstanding Tigers players, while Thandisizwe Mbilase, Ayabulela Kapo, Lucas Mgushe and Bongco were United’s most influential players.
