DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION: PARENTS URGED TO GET INVOLVED IN PUPILS’ STUDIES

Hope for better Matric pass rates THANDI SETOKOE

A

S Grade 12 learners return to their desks for arguably the most important few months of their school careers, the Eastern Cape Department of Education has committed to equipping the learners with the necessary tools in an attempt to improve the province’s 2017 matric pass rate. This after the province was ranked the worst performing last year attaining 63.3% – an increase of 1.1% from 62.2% in 2015. Speaking to PE Express, the spokesperson for the Eastern Cape Department of Education, Malibongwe Mtima, confirmed that more than 500 winter school centres have been established across the province as means to ensure the pass rate doesn’t fall below last year’s level. However, he added that that alone is not enough if parents and guardians don’t play their role at home. “We urge parents to meet us halfway by encouraging their children to study at home and offer assistance where possible. “It becomes a fruitless exercise if the educators teach the children at school then when they get home parents don’t get involved.” Mtima said the centres were well resourced with old examination papers and study guides. “This will enable the learners to familiarise themselves with answering questions, bettering their preparation for the preliminary and final examinations,” Mtima explained. He explained that previously there had

been a challenge of learners not being able to partake in the winter schools due to financial problems. “We have resolved that issue by ensuring that the learners attending the classes are provided with money for food and transport,” Mtima said. Khulile Zondani, a Grade 12 pupil from Ithembelihle Comprehensive School, said the winter classes have really made a huge difference. “I am now more confident and better prepared for the upcoming exams. “The teachers at the centre are very patient and thorough,” Zondani said. Parent and teacher Sibongiseni Nqonji, however, argued that much work needs to be done in order to be able to get parents involved. “The greatest challenge faced is that in most cases there is a gap in knowledge between parents and the schooling system. “This is not a problem that can be resolved overnight. “In some cases, the parents are uneducated and it, therefore, becomes difficult for them to be able to assist in the studying process,” she explained. Four winter schools have been established in the metro. They were held at the Military Base, Daniel Pienaar Technical High School, Dower College and Strelitzia High School.

Metro to hand out 1 800 bursaries worth R34 million REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will soon hand out 1 800 bursaries to give the region’s young people a boost. The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip, explained that in as much as the municipality’s mandate excludes education, they have nonetheless identified R34 million for bursaries. “Our young learners deserve an opportunity to fulfil their dreams and the Nelson Mandela Bay leadership wants to see this happen,” Trollip said.

“Education is a provincial government competency, and is sadly failing many of our young South Africans,” Trollip added. The mayor said that the metro will continue to put pressure on the provincial and national departments of education to improve school conditions, facilities and educator skills. “In the meanwhile, your coalition metro government has stepped up to nurture the dreams and aspirations of our next generation of leaders. “Details on how to apply for these bursaries will be communicated in due course,” he added.

Relief for drivers as traffic dept testing machines fixed REPORTER THE time Nelson Mandela Bay residents spend in queues at both the Uitenhage and Korsten Traffic and Drivers Licensing Department has been lessened following repairs to seven Live Capturing Units (LCUs). Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) member of the mayoral committee for safety and security, Councillor John Best, said at a media briefing on Friday that this important development will ensure that more people can be assisted on a daily basis. “We used to service between 350 and 400 people per day with the three machines. “Following the intervention, we will now be able to service up to 600 people per day. “This is almost double the number of people which means queuing times will be cut in half. “It is important to clarify that the Department of Transport is responsible for the provision and the maintenance of the LCU and Live Enrolment Units (LEUs), used to book appointments and to issue and renew drivers’ licenses,” he said. “These units are outdated and the department has difficulty finding replacement parts for it, which affects our turnaround times. “I continuously raised this matter with

the department since we received numerous complaints from the public. “The department informed us that a new tender will be adjudicated in August. “They also sent technicians this week in response to our continuous plight in Nelson Mandela Bay, Humansdorp and surrounding areas to fix our machines.

“As a result six additional machines are now operational at the Korsten Traffic and Licensing Centre and another at the Uitenhage Traffic and Licensing Centre.” Owing to the fact that not all eight LCUs were operational, trained staff were deployed elsewhere. Acting head of traffic and licensing, An-

drew Moses, said since more machines are now available, the current staff complement will be supplemented. “We will engage with those staff members, who are already trained, to ensure a faster turnaround time. “We want this to be in place before the new tender is in place,” said Moses. < From left are Mirinda van Huyssteen (acting Assistant Director: Licensing), Andrew Moses (acting Head of Traffic and Licensing) and Councillor John Best (MMC for Safety and Security) addressing the media at a press conference on Friday, July 21.

New leadership turns NMBM into second most trusted in SA REPORTER NELSON Mandela Bay is now officially the second most trusted metro municipality in the country. The latest South African Customer Satisfaction Index (SAcsi) has shown a dramatic increase in overall satisfaction of NMB residents. Furthermore, the city is now the second most trusted metro in the country, up from second last position a year ago. The Cape Town municipality is currently in first position. Executive Mayor Athol Trollip’s spokesperson Sibongile Dimbaza said, the coalition government, led by Trollip, remains focused on

building a solid political foundation, centred on stability. “For too many years the people of the municipality were subjected to maladministration, corruption, incompetence and a political leadership that didn’t care. “Those days are over,” Dimbaza said. Dimbaza said since coming into office, the new coalition government has adopted a 2017/18 IDP and budget that are changing the face of the Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB). “Thousands of residents will be receiving basic services to their homes for the first time because this government wants to build a caring city,” Dimbaza said. “Thousands of bucket toilets are being replaced with dignified sani-

tation because we want this to be a well-run city that redresses the wrongs of the past. Fraud is being rooted out and an anticorruption hotline is fully operational.” The city has also opened the first two metro police satellite stations in the province in Bethelsdorp and KwaNobuhle. “Over time it is possible to make NMB a safe city. “While there is still a very long way to go, the metro is humbled to have received such important acknowledgment from residents. Nelson Mandela Bay is moving forward again and this administration will only work harder to deliver better services, stop corruption and grow the economy to create jobs,” Dimbaza concluded.

NMB appoints task team to address housing issues REPORTER A HOUSING task team has been established by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to address housing issues in the metro. “Operation Buyisa Isidima, which will be rolled out through this task team, is about building a caring city that ensures and protects the dignity of our people,” Executive Mayor Athol Trollip said. The newly launched task team has been instructed to ensure an eight-month turnaround time, from when ground is first broken

at a project to when the rightful homeowners receive their verified title deeds. “Operation Buyisa Isidima, through this task team, will also focus on preparing an audited and verified list of existing beneficiaries, identifying those who still require title deeds. “Estimates indicate that this number could be well over 10 000, all of which this government will audit and hand out to the rightful owners before the end of 2017,” Trollip said. He said the operation would identify instances of illegal occupation.

“As a pioneering intervention by the mayoral committee member for human settlements, Councillor Nqaba Bhanga, and his senior management, Operation Buyisa Isidima is a remarkable initiative that is about restoring and nurturing the dignity of our residents. “This is the final push to improve and verify delivery, registration and ownership of state-subsidised housing dramatically.” The task team is made up of deeds office staff, land surveyors, town planners, housing delivery officials and a municipal conveyancer.

Mom opens her heart to children with special needs THANDI SETOKOE “MOST children with special needs are more like normally developing children than they are different from them. They share the same zest for discovery, love for stories and music. “They, too, need to learn to run and play, solve problems, have conversations with friends and attend to their personal needs.” These are the words of Nokuthula Tshotshobe, the founder of On The Sparrow Day Care in New Brighton. The day care, which caters for children with special needs, was started

in May last year when Nokuthula realised there were many children in the township who had special needs but whose parents could not afford to take them to the special needs schools in town. “I remember when I wanted to take my son to a special school, they charged me R2 000 and I couldn’t afford it because I was unemployed. “So, I thought to myself how can I teach my son?” she said. Upon doing research online and reading up on her son’s autism condition, and after being told by doctors that he was blind and would never be able to walk or talk properly, she

started to homeschool him. “I started educating myself about his condition and talking to other parents who are also homeschooling their special needs children. They gave me the necessary resources and little by little I started seeing an improvement in my son’s condition.” It is thereafter that she decided to use the skills that she had gained through taking care of her son to help other parents in the same situation. She then began babysitting and teaching children with special needs from her small home. “Most parents in the township segregate their special needs children at home as means of protecting them from the outside world. This, however, does not do the child any good.” She further explained that finding an opening in a childcare centre can be a long, frustrating experience for parents, particularly when employment is essential to cover basic needs. “The problem of locating a satisfactory place increases tenfold when children have special needs,” she said. To date the day care centre has nine children and Tshotshobe is solely responsible for them. “Yes, it’s a great challenge as the children have different special needs conditions. However, due to funding employing staff is not yet possible.

The day care is now run in a beautiful container sponsored by Nedbank. PHOTOS: THANDI SETOKOE

The founder, however, lights up as she lists the long-term goals that she envisions for the day care centre. “I can already picture it in my head. Them having their own playground with swings and a jacuzzi where they can soak because they need heat before their workout. “With God by my side, everything is possible.”

The 17-year-old aspiring ballerinas, Anneke Claassen, Skye Phillips and Kate Weakley, who are no strangers to the Youth Ballet and the Opera House have just returned from their once-in-a-lifetime experience at the American Academy of Ballet (AAB) Summer School of Excellence at Purchase College at the State University of New York. They auditioned against talented young dancers from the United States of America and 15 other countries to earn their places at the intensive three-week AAB Summer School. Weakley said she is overjoyed to have been part of the group selected for the by-invitation-only summer school. “It was an amazing experience and it really pushed me to work harder. I’m glad that I got to share the experience with my two best friends.” The AAB is considered to be one of the world’s leading dance and training grounds and Phillips couldn’t agree more, “I have learnt so much. Our three-week course included dancing six days a week under the guidance of teachers who are also coaches to some of the dance world’s top performers.” Claassen who started ballet dancing at the age of two echoed Phillips, add-

ing that she is excited for what awaits them at the Youth Ballet. “It is going to be a great platform for us to showcase our hard work and all that we have learnt abroad.” The classical ballet production is an enchanting Hans Christian Anderson fairytale of how once upon a time there lived a woman who had no children and longed for a little girl. Upon visiting a good witch she is given an acorn to plant in a flowerpot. The acorn soon grows into a beautiful flower and in that flower is a tiny maiden, whom the woman names Thumbelina. The three ballet dancers are pupils of the Walmer School of Dance run by Royal Academy of Dance registered teacher Troy Coffey, who could not be more proud of them.

“Next year will be their final year with me. It saddens me to know that I will have to let them go. They will be doing matric so they will not be able to be as dedicated as they have been this year,” Coffey explained. The girls will be part of the 60 Port Elizabeth dancers in the roles of ice fairies, flowers, lovebirds and jitterbugs alongside a complement of six Cape Town City Ballet guest artists in various roles. Meghan Henegan, a former Port Elizabeth trained ballerina, now a soloist with Cape Town City Ballet will take the lead role of Thumbelina. The production will be performed at 7pm on July 27 and 28, and at 3 and 6:30pm on July 29. Tickets can be purchased at Computicket for R100.

– VERSLAGGEWER

‘The Road’ production to grace PE opera stage THE play The Road, which recently had its world première at the PANSA Eastern Cape New Writing Festival, will be staged at the The Barn Theatre at the Port Elizabeth Opera House from today until Saturday. Writer Robert Lourens said, “Although the play is set in 1987, the issues dealt with are as valid today as they were then – alcoholism, gender violence and the inhumane treatment of people.” He explains that the play revolves around a mottled group of recovering alcoholics, a middle-aged coloured and white man, an older Afrikaans woman and a young Indian woman, on the road from Pretoria to Mbabatho, to attend an Alcoholics Anonymous convention. Although travelling illegally together according to the then laws of the country, they find themselves drawn together by the common addiction of alcohol and their common ancestry as human beings. “Imagine four vastly different opinionated people confined in a car on a long journey – what could go wrong? “It is true that each of our circumstances

may be different, but we are all in the same vehicle, on the same road headed for the same destination with the same needs and dreams – security, love, dignity and hope,” he said. “We need to break down the barriers and talk to one another and we may find we have more in common than we thought,” Lourens said. Although the play is set in and around Gauteng and the North West Provinces and speaks of the areas of Lady Selbourne and Eersterus, the play was born out of stories heard from the people of South End. He further explained that the story brings to light the hurts endured during the apartheid years which reflect on their interactions with people. “This is a journey through the lives of these four people, we are experiencing the hurts of the past, the reality of the present and the perceived ramifications of the future. “This is their story, this is our story, and this is your story.” The production will be performed at 7pm from today until Friday, and at 2pm and 7pm on Saturday. Tickets can be purchased at the door for R50 (students and pensioners for R20).

Sovereign Foods partners with NPO to help feed less fortunate

As seen on DStv 59631

“I HAVE five children and am unemployed. Being here today, receiving this cooked meal, means so much to me. These are the words of Desire Gallant of Timothy Valley in Port Elizabeth who visited the Sovereign Foods and We Care HIV Aids Organisation and Feeding Scheme on Mandela Day. Gallant, who visits a soup kitchen twice a week and largely depends on children’s grants, was among the hundreds of children and adults at the internationally recognised Mandela Day event in Bloemendal who were treated to a cooked meal, sponsored largely by Sovereign Foods. “I appreciate being here today. I can’t explain how grateful I am. “I had to walk here with my children to get this meal. I am so grateful, Gallant said. The main objective of Mandela Day is to inspire individuals to take action and help change the world for the better. This year the Nelson Mandela campaign focused on fighting poverty under the theme #ActionAgainstPoverty. Tanya Fredericks of Extension 21 said she was happy that children were given the opportunity to play as children on Mandela Day. “I often see children copy gangsters with how they speak and how they play with toy guns. “This is such a good initiative that they could play today as children should. They are also being treated to good cooked meals, she said. Hursele Kruger, a volunteer at the Mandela Day event, said that being unemployed is not easy and knowing that a large number of families will not only bond, but also receive a cooked meal is heartwarming. “Communities are challenged on a daily basis with unemployment, and there is a shortage of love and attention between parents and children. Today parents and children will bond here on this sports field and the meal will help feed a hungry child, Kruger said. Sovereign Foods has supported We Care, a non-profit organisation (NPO), for the past three years and has contributed R35 000 to their various initiatives. “It is important for Sovereign Foods to contribute to communities and make a difference.

“We have supported We Care for the past three years. Our corporate social investment projects allow us to contribute toward the improvement of society in some way, said Cwayita Mdledle, Sovereign Foods senior human resources manager. “The company’s CSI projects all fall under the Sovereign Cares initiative. “The mission of our CSI programme is to contribute to the sustainable development of rural and previously disadvantaged communities and actively engage stakeholders in programmes that add value to the lives of those in the areas around Sovereign Foods. We Care feeds 800 children twice a day, provides computer training for Grade 11 and 12 learners, provides health services to the community and give home-based carer training. “Looking after the well-being of the children is very important to us. We believe that to feed a child and look after their health status is important for us as we render a service important to sustain them, said Apostle Donovan Arends, chairman of the We Care HIV Aids organisation. – REPORTER

Students go all out for NPO REPORTER AS part of a third-year public relations assignment, five BA Media, Communication and Culture (MCC) students from the newly renamed Nelson Mandela University will be running a fundraising initiative in aid of a local non-profit organisation (NPO). The five young women teamed up to form a fictitious public relations company called Purple Monkey Media and joined forces with the Groom A Girl initiative with the intention of raising funds to further develop the organisation. Groom A Girl is a registered NPO that assists young girls between the ages of 13 and 18 through various educational and mentorship programmes. The organisation also provides these young girls with basic necessities such as sanitary products. Groom A Girl is led by founder Nakita de Souza and her chairwomen, Carly and Cadi Baatjes. De Souza’s inspiration for the initiative stemmed from the fact that she wanted to give back to the community and make a difference

in some way. Purple Monkey Media found Groom A Girl to be the perfect fit for their project. “We wanted to work with a charity whose core focus was the empowerment of women,” said Mooniq Rowan, CEO of Purple Monkey Media. As part of the fundraising initiative, Purple Monkey Media will play host to Fit Fest, a fitness and wellness event, where all proceeds will be donated to the Groom A Girl initiative. “The money will be used to help with a variety of things, such as purchasing supplies for our workshops and toiletries and helping a few of the girls with paying school fees, as well as with things like meals and transportation for outings,” said De Souza. Fit Fest is a women’s only event that will take place on August 26 in honour of Women’s Month. It will consist of three express workout classes, which include Zumba, yoga and self-defence. Fit Fest will begin at 9am at Chicky’s Yard in Baakens Valley. Participants must wear comfortable clothes and bring along a yoga mat. Tickets at R100 per person are available at Evolution MMA at 1 Lower Valley Road in South End.

ADVERTORIAL: WHEELCHAIR WEDNESDAY

Initiative donates 600 wheelchairs to disabled persons THE power of wheels is often an under appreciated thing. Daily, people rely on wheels for all types of mobility needs, but mostly for getting from point A to B. Just imagine what it is like spending everyday reliant on a tool, like a wheelchair, that is completely central to one’s existence and the challenges that come with it. This exercise of imagination is the motive behind the Association for Persons with Physical Disabilities’ (APD) fundraising and awareness initiative, Wheelchair Wednesday. “The APD will continue to keep the idea simple but effective,” said Brian Bezuidenhout, APD’s executive director. “So, we thought, what better way to raise awareness and funds and turn the tables on traditional thinking about people with physical disabilities than to give able-bodied people insight and perspective into our lives? “The method? Getting company heads, chief executives and city leaders in general to pledge to spend four hours in a wheelchair every Wednesday in August. “This way our leadership from the public and private sectors gains deeper insight into our obstacles and can provide opportunities at the same time,” he said. With over 100 000 people with disabilities living in Nelson Mandela Bay, this is a wellneeded perspective, added Bezuidenhout. The APD is aiming at getting 120 local highflyers to come on board this year. These business and public sector participants each donate R5 500 to take part in Wheelchair Wednesday. The donations will ultimately translate into 150 wheelchairs which will go to needy beneficiaries. The initiative’s six years of existence will

see 600 people receiving wheelchairs. “One of the major factors that prohibit persons with disabilities from integrating and functioning normally within society is the issue of reasonable accommodation,” Bezuidenhout explained. “It is to this end that we have devised this awareness campaign. The Wheelchair Wednesday initiative will once again challenge the mindset of the decision-makers within society and help to bring about an unprecedented paradigm shift in the way persons with disabilities are treated.” The initiative has the support of several sponsors, including SPAR, Network 21 and the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, who have all contributed extensively to the campaign. “It is with much gratitude that we acknowledge the financial assistance of our main sponsors for their continued assistance in sustaining the project. We also acknowledge the assistance of our other sponsors who have come on board,” added Bezuidenhout. The first week of the campaign, which is set to kick off on August 2, will see 30 eager participants gather at a SPAR store for the start of their four-hour challenge. “To ensure that the participants get the maximum effect we will be strapping their feet together,” said Bezuidenhout. “Exciting news is that, after attending the 2016 handover ceremony where 150 wheelchairs were handed over, Executive Mayor Athol Trollip announced that he and his mayoral committee will participate in the campaign by spending time in a wheelchair.” For more info contact Brian Bezuidenhout on 082 450 3581 or brian.bezuidenhout@ apdnmb.org.za.

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 26 JULY 2017

Farm manager’s success an inspiration to youth REPORTER MPHO Nemukula realised from a very young age that she wanted to be a farmer. Entering the male-dominated agricultural industry was no easy feat, but her love of and passion for farming has contributed to her success as a poultry farm manager. Nemukula (34), who works as an area manager for Sovereign Foods in Uitenhage, said that despite the many challenges facing the youth of today, from being victims of crime, unemployment, substance abuse and peer pressure, they should find something that they love and go after their dreams. Nemukula, like many other South Africans, recently took time on Youth Day to honour the Soweto schoolchildren who died in 1976 on a day that changed the course of South Africa’s history. “Youth Day is very important for me. “I appreciate the lives that were lost in order for me to get a quality education and to be where I am today,” she said. Her messages of inspiration to the youth are to “be true to yourself, what you think is what you become, and lastly don’t try to fit in, but try to be unique”. Nemukula was born in Nzhelele Village in Limpopo Province. With three brothers, she admitted to growing up as a tomboy. “Having grown up with my three brothers, I realised very early in life that gender shouldn’t matter and that I can do anything that I love doing. In high school I learned about agriculture and decided to get involved in this male-dominated industry.” She started working as a trainee student at Sovereign Foods 10 years ago. From there she became a farm supervisor. Thereafter she was promoted to a successful farm manager. This was followed by another promotion to a senior farm manager. Today, she is an area manager responsible for the management of three farms and over 140 000

PHOTO:SUPPLIED broiler breeder chickens. “Sovereign Foods helped to further my education by investing in my enrolment in a management development programme at NMU Business School. “I graduated last year. This programme has helped me a lot as a young female leader. “I have learned a lot about management skills, how to deal with or lead any group regardless of age or whether they are men or women,” she said. Despite her successes her career has not been without its challenges. After completing her studies at Tshwane University, she thought she was strong enough to

handle the agricultural sector. However, she learned the hard way just how difficult the industry can be. “I was a young woman leading older men. This was really challenging and still is. “Men tend to undermine your authority and challenge your skills. “I overcame this through the support from my team and the company values. The leadership course that I completed has also been really helpful in dealing with these challenges. “I love my team, especially my boss, Nathan Smith. I wouldn’t even call him a ‘boss’ but he is my coach, mentor, and a friend.”

She encourages the youth to consider farming as a career. “Farming is a very good career that the youth, including women should consider. There are not enough women in this industry. “To pursue a career in farming you should love it first. One needs to graduate with a diploma or degree in agriculture, coupled with a management or leadership diploma,” she noted. Her advice for women and youth who want to enter a male-dominated field is that “nothing is impossible. If you love farming, go for it. We can actually make it a female dominated field in a few years.”

67 Minutes for Nelson Mandela Day: 18 July 2017 Shoprite doles out blessings on Mandela Day IN celebration of Mandela Day 2017, Shoprite joined hands with the Ngomso Youth Foundation in Zwide to upgrade their kitchen and garden areas. “We will be working hand-in-hand with the organisation to upgrade the kitchen and garden so that Lulama Ngqungwana (Ngomso Youth Foundation’s founder and director) is able to better serve the youth of this com-

munity who are affected by underage parenting and child-headed homes,” said Kelly Atherton, CSI publicity manager at Shoprite. “The new direction for Mandela Day, according to the foundation, is to run Mandela Day projects that offer longevity and sustainability. This is exactly what we are trying to do - we want to make sure that the change we

create is able to offer Ngomso Youth Foundation more sustainability.” Some of the upgrades made to the centre include the addition of a gas stove and other kitchen equipment and a new garden complete with soil fertilization, grass, hedging and seeds. “The aim is to ensure that the community has a comfortable centre,” Atherton concluded. – REPORTER < Planting the new garden at the Ngomso Youth Foundation are, from left, Siyamthanda Mgzulwa (Wathint Abafazi), Harriet Ngqungwana, Esmeralda Essex (PR manager EC) Patricia Piyani (Wathint’ Abafazi), Marvin O’Reilly (Shoprite Struandale-Kenako branch manager), Andrea Govender (Freshmark - division of Shoprite), Ayabulela Yedwa (Wathint’ Abafazi), Nokuthula Ngele (Freshmark - division of Shoprite) and Ntombizodwa Mphahlaza (volunteer at Ngomso). SPAR and Love Story feed the Bay SPAR Eastern Cape joined hands with Love Story to continue their initiative of assisting those in need when they hosted their second City Feed Lunch in Fleming Street near the City Hall in Port Elizabeth on Mandela Day. As part of their commitment to celebrate Mandela Day, the retailer poured their resources into supplying lunch for about 200 homeless people. “We offered tea and coffee for those who were there on arrival and also handed out cupcakes as dessert to try to ensure it was a memorable occasion for them,”

said SPAR Eastern Cape sponsorship controller Roseann Shadrach. She added that they were introduced to the concept by Elaine Watson of Love Story, an organisation which manages feeding schemes in the city centre each day of the week. “The City Feed is a perfect opportunity to give back to the community because we are able to provide the ingredients for the meals, as well as volunteering our services to make sure everyone is looked after,” she said. – REPORTER

67 Minutes for Nelson Mandela Day: 18 July 2017 Racing gives back on Mandela Day IT is a date that has become synonymous with charity and giving back and the sport of horseracing was one of many organisations that committed to making a difference on Mandela Day 2017. A rallying call was put out on social media in the build-up to the day, which coincides with former president and worldwide icon Nelson Mandela’s birthday, and several representatives made their way to various horse care units around the country. The Johannesburg team from Racing. It’s A Rush made their way to the Highveld Horse Care Unit in Meyerton while the staff from Port Elizabeth headed to the East Cape Horse Care Unit. In Cape Town, staff from Kenilworth Racecourse made their way to the Thoroughbred Rehoming and Rescue Centre in Philippi. While the horseracing industry makes significant contributions throughout the year, Mandela Day was a chance for staff

to be more involved in the process as they gave up their 67 minutes to help others. “It’s great to see the passion and enthusiasm from everyone involved. A big thank you to everyone involved for contributing not only through donations but by also giving up their time. It’s a small gesture that goes a long way in showing interest and passion from within the industry,” said Racing. It’s A Rush brand manager, Jenna Potgieter. At the Highveld Horse Care Unit they got the chance to get up close with equines of all shapes and sizes, spoil them with carrots and apples and even get involved painting the stable block used for medical purposes. The Highveld Horse Care Unit currently houses 70 animals with a mixture of breeds, including donkeys, and plays an active role in assisting horses retiring from racing to find them new homes and help them pursue second careers. – REPORTER

SVA shows abandoned babies love THE team from SVA International visited Isithembiso Babies Home on Mandela Day to donate boxes of non-perishable supplies, but ended up walking away with much more. This is according to head of the Eastern Cape office, Debbie Wintermeyer, who identified the home for orphaned and abandoned babies as the beneficiary of their annual initiative. “Isithembiso is a well-established, reputable facility that does amazing work at grassroots level,” said Wintermeyer. “The children here have all had a difficult start and the aim is to see them placed in a loving and secure family environment.” She said her office sponsored a number of items on the home’s shopping list,

including dry food and nappies, which are an ongoing need. “As an architectural firm, we are constantly upgrading our equipment and programmes, so we also donated a gently used laptop and will provide IT support where needed.” Wintermeyer said one of her staff members also conducted an assessment of the facility to identify areas where structural elements and interior spaces could be improved. These recommendations were reported to the home’s management team for consideration. “For businesses in the hard corporate world, Mandela Day serves as an important reminder to look at the softer, simpler aspects of life and to find ways to serve others with humility and respect,” Wintermeyer concluded. – REPORTER

defence outstandingly. In the second half, Manchester FC played as a unit, but Tsoko and his defenders were stubborn. Manchester FC were robbed of their equalising goal after striker Akhona Hazard Jakuja’s thunderous shot was saved by the goal’s upright post early in the second half. SUBS could have doubled their lead, but Moyikwa shot the penalty kick straight to Manchester FC goalkeeper Ndukwana’s hands. In another game, Real Aces were led into a 1-1 draw by Young Romans. SUBS caught Manchester FC by surprise when Sakhumzi Moyikwa was rewarded with an early goal that beat goalkeeper Xabiso Ndukwana. The tempo of the game changed swiftly after Moyikwa’s goal. SOME of the top contenders maintained their momentum in their bids to clinch the Zwide Football Association (ZWIFA) Ntando Premier League title at the weekend. Major Chiefs are counted among the sides that set their sights on winning the prestigious trophy as they have not yet been defeated so far. Major Chiefs devastated Swartkops United 2-0 at Gal City Grounds on Sunday, while Kuyasa United Brothers edged out Young Killers 1-0 in their scintillating games. ZWIFA newcomers, Hungry Lions, whacked Zwide Pirates

5-0 in a one-sided affair. In the battle of the neighbours, the on-form Manchester City defeated Young Brothers 1-0. Real Crusaders added more worries to the lacklustre Strikers United after beating them 4-2. Shining Stars gave the highriding Sophakama a hiding of 2-0. In the ZWIFA First Division, Soweto Angels managed to claim a 2-0 triumph from Manchester City B, while Bay Tigers went down 2-0 to Golden Arrows. Real Crusaders B copied the example of their senior side after they drubbed Everton 4-2. Despite trailing by 2-0, Golden Aces gave Mighty Heroes a tough time.

Kuyga Masters increase undefeated streak to 11 straight matches FRANCOIS ROTHNER KUYGA Masters retained their unbeaten record after 11 rounds with a close 1-0 victory over Callies in the Port Elizabeth Legends Football Association (PELFA) Old Buck Legends League. In what turned out to be a very tight game, Andile Mcclean scored the winner for Kuyga. In another game, Hearts had to work hard for their 3-1 victory over Westpark. Travis la Mude had Hearts up 1-0 at half-time. Sandla “Stunkie” Sifile added Hearts’ second goal midway through the second half. A few minutes later, Mike

Frosler netted for Westpark, while La Mude sealed the game for Hearts with a goal in the dying minutes of the game. African Leopards got the better of PE City 4-2 as well. Ncedisa Goniwe and Monde Gubayo helped themselves to a brace each for Leopards. Shamrocks ran out easy 4-0 winners over Priory. Goal poacher deluxe, Kumarin “Bubble” Naidoo, helped himself to a hat trick and Richard Vereen added Shamrocks’ fourth goal. In a high scoring match at The Oval, Mahle Old Grey trounced NMBM 5-4. Jason Aitken and Michael Williams had Old Grey up 2-1 at halftime.

PE All Stars lose to VW Masters on home turf SELBY MADIKANE PE ALL Stars did not live up to their fans’ expectations when they were handed a 5-3 defeat by VW Masters in their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay Masters Association League clash at Stinging Bees Grounds in New Brighton on Sunday. As the game started, the home side looked as if they would emerge the winners since they put the Uitenhage motor industry side under immense pressure. The fans of All Stars enjoyed a moment of ecstasy following a spectacular goal that was banged

in by Monde Tyaliti. Moments later, VW Masters replied with an equalising goal that was scored by Thozamile Ngesi. All Stars supporters had hope when they saw their side leading 2-1 after Luzuko Dzuyi Hambaze came up with a goal in the last minutes of the first half. VW Masters spoiled All Stars’ hope after Nkosinathi Tiya pulled a trigger to make the score 2-2. Tiya then scored his second goal which increased VW Masters’ lead to 3-2. Luthando Maseti’s goal brought back All Stars supporters’ celebratory mood as the score again became even at 3-3.

Thembela Makasi sent a salvo that beat All Stars’ goalkeeper and put VW Masters back in the lead at 4-3. Abongile Mpambani’s goal sealed the game at 5-3 in favour of VW Masters. Golden Heroes hammer Airport Valley SELBY MADIKANE GOLDEN Heroes did not show any mercy to Airport Valley United after they humiliated them 18-0 in their Walmer Football Association (WAFA) Premier League game that was played at the Walmer Community Fields on Saturday. Heroes, who are one of the WAFA league title contenders, did not give the newcomers room to breathe. They dominated United across the field. It looked like as if Golden Heroes were running a practice. Fans saw six goals scored in the first stanza of the game with no response from United. The supporters of the beautiful game thought that United would not rest on their laurels in the second half, but things became even worse.

Heroes found the back of the net 12 times in the second half. As things stand, Airport Valley United’s technical team should go to the drawing board, or they will find themselves playing in the WAFA lower league in the 2017/2018 season. In another tough battle, Mabayibone Strikers earned a hardfought 4-3 victory from Morning Stars, while Real Madrid registered an emphatic 4-1 victory on Peace United. Walmer Hotspurs rubbed salt in Airport Valley United’s wounds in their 1-0 win. African Aces let down their supporters following their narrow 2-1 loss to Morning Stars in their tough game, while Young Aces lost 2-0 to Ghetto Stars. Peace United redeemed themselves in their well-deserved 2-0 win over Mabayibone Strikers.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

Hungaroring vital piece in championship puzzle IN an F1 championship as closely contested as the 2017 edition, every race weekend becomes an important one. At this stage, as Vettel and Hamilton are separated by a single point, none are more vital than the last race before the summer break. The 2017 Hungarian Grand Prix runs around the Hungaroring. A tight and twisting cacophony of medium speed corners this circuit is often described as a supersized karting track. Its flowing nature mandates total precision, as an error in one corner will be carried through an entire lap and ultimately result in loss of laptime. “It has many low and medium speed corners, which demand stability on corner entry and strong traction on the exit. “It’s quite hard on both the front and rear tyres, so overall it can be characterised as a tough handling circuit,” said Renault’s Nick Chester. The circuit is further notorious for being green at the start of the weekend, as it doesn’t see much running for the rest of the year. However, grip improves throughout the weekend for which Pirelli have brought the supersoft, soft, and medium compounds. While the Pirelli compounds have proved to a step harder than last year, the hotter conditions in Hungary should allow for better tyre performance. Meanwhile, the belief is that the medium compound will simply be a travelling tyre as it is too hard to be considered for use. Which teams will the flowing corners of the

Hungaroring favour? Traditionally, the streets of Monaco have been a good indicator as to who could do well in Hungary. However, a few things have changed since the May race dominated by Ferrari. Significantly, the biggest change has been Mercedes’ ability to get on top of their tyre issues by understanding how to bring them into their operating window correctly. While on the face it seems as if Merc have pulled away in terms of car development, it is in fact in this area where they have made the biggest gain. Red Bull too could go well here as the circuit highlights chassis more than power. What’s more is that overtaking around the Hungaroring isn’t abundant. Therefore, if Verstappen or Ricciardo can get ahead of either Merc or Ferrari drivers, and work the strategy in their favour, they could step on the podium at the end of it. For Finns Kimi Raikkonen and Valterri Bottas Hungary is as close as they’ll get to Finland and it, obviously, brings out a serious amount of support from across the border. Both Finns had good drives in Silverstone, barring Raikkonen’s late puncture. With the championship as close as it has been at any point in the season, what the teammates of the two title contenders do is equally as important. With two race wins this season, Bottas has already shown his prowess and it’s about time that Raikkonen do the same.

Entries to Medihelp NMB Train Race are now open MICHAEL ZOETMULDER THE 2017 Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race entries have now opened with the announcement of a two-year sponsorship from Medihelp medical scheme. The sponsorship is a great boost for the iconic event which was reintroduced in 2014 in a unique and exciting format between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage stations. The 2017 Medihelp Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race will take place on Sunday, October 1, and is expected to attract over 250 teams. The teams will take on a Metrorail train over 38km, where each team comprises of five runners and one mountain bike cyclist. An individual category is also available within the event which is primarily a team event for companies, schools, social and club teams. Medihelp’s principal officer, Heyn van Rooyen, said that Medihelp is proud to be associated with such an esteemed event. “The event was a perfect fit for Medihelp’s objectives to promote a healthy lifestyle and provide opportunities for our members in regions to engage with Medihelp and participate in events that illustrate the physical and psychological value of keeping active,” Van Rooyen said. The six-stage race will start at the historic Port Elizabeth railway station at 9am on race day with just over 700 spectators boarding the train which the teams will be racing. Stage one is a 5km run towards Sydenham Station and stage two is the shortest stage of the race at around 3.5km, taking the teams through Deal Party to opposite New Brighton Station. Then, it’s stage three, a 4.5km run down to the Swartkops river front where teams will tag their mountain bike riders before stage four, a 10km off-road cycle along the railway line through the quaint village of Redhouse on to Perseverance Station, where the cyclist will hand over to a runner to setup over stage five.

Last year the train won by about three minutes against the first corporate team, Gamble Pharmacy, with Andre Ketchem crossing the line for them.

PHOTO: ORACLE MEDIA

Stage five is a 6km run through Despatch and to the Despatch Station. Finally, stage six will take the last team member on an 8km mixed trail and road run into Uitenhage to finish in the festival atmosphere of the Uitenhage Station. The train passengers often have the best time of all with a nostalgic trip on the train which has a 20-minute stop-over at Redhouse Station for refreshments. A limited number of train coaches are also made available for companies to prebook. Tickets will be available as of August 1. Entries for the Medihelp Train Race costs R700 for corporate teams, R600 for social teams, R500 for club teams, R400 for school teams and R200 for individuals. Once again the event will support local charity Love Story and all its initiatives in the communities along the race route. NELSON Mandela University Madibaz squash players, Hayley Ward and Bianca Brown, kept the varsity flag flying high at the recent University Sport South Africa tournament in Johannesburg where both were selected for the top six at the event’s conclusion. Competing in the individual event, 19-yearold Ward, a second-year accounting student, finished fourth, followed by the 21-year-old Brown in fifth spot. In the team competition, which combined the men’s and women’s sections, Madibaz ended fourth overall. Both players said the tournament had provided tough competition, but were delighted with their performances. Ward, a former Collegiate learner, said the final outcome was a boost for her confidence. “I am so happy I was able to accomplish this because it shows that all the hard work has paid off,” she said. “The squash was very competitive. In the individual rounds, I started in the seventh position, so it was great to finish off at number four.” She added that the highlights of the week were receiving the most improved player award and being named at number one in the Best of the Rest team. “This side is named at the end of the tournament and does not include members of the winning university. “Besides the individual section, I thoroughly enjoyed the team event,” said Ward. “There was a lot of spirit in the team and encouragement from the whole squad, and we were all there to support one another.” She paid tribute to her mother, Gail Millard, for her constant support and advice, while also acknowledging the contribution of her coach, Greg La Mude. “Greg has been a role model for me, helping

me with my game and always supporting me.” Brown, who was educated at Hudson Park in East London, said she felt she played some of her best squash at the USSA tournament, having narrowly missed out on top six selection last year. “It was reward for the hard work I have put in, even though I found the tournament very tough,” said the third-year law student, whose matches all went to five games. After losing in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Alexa Pienaar of UJ, she won her remaining matches in the 5-8 play-offs to end fifth. She said she had gained confidence in her playing ability from the week. “Besides that, I also learnt how to better incorporate a good length with my attacking short game.” Brown also alluded to the importance of the team event as she reflected on some of the highlights. “The big highlight of the week was certainly our team match against University of Stellenbosch where Gershwin Forbes snuck the one game which we needed to avoid a points countout, allowing us to make the semi-finals.” Looking ahead she said she would be aiming to make the USSA side for the International University Sports Federation Games next year. “If my studies allow, that will be my big goal for 2018,” she said. Madibaz Sport squash manager Melissa Awu said they were proud of the two players’ achievements, as well as the performance of the team. “It was indeed a competitive tournament and great to watch. The girls really flew the Madibaz flag high and showed great sportsmanship throughout. We congratulate them and they can only improve from here.” – REPORTER

All-round athleticism sees local stars excel in national biathle tournament MORE than 30 athletes from The Nelson Mandela Bay Modern Pentathlon Association (NMBMPA) took part in the SA National Biathle Championships held in George at Glenwood School over the first weekend of the July holidays. Biathle, a continuous run-swim-run event, is considered to be a tough sport that requires both mental and physical strength. NMBMPA chairperson Shaun Richter commended the athletes for showing great sportsmanship after a season of hard work. “The top performances of the day belonged to one of our younger female athletes, Keira van Heerden, in the u/11 category. “She ran her heart out in an incredibly tough race and finished in third place. “Another top performance of the day undoubtedly belonged to our oldest female athlete, Margie Saunders, who raced in the Masters 60 plus category and was in unbelievable form, dominating her race from the start to the end. Even more impressive was that in the Masters 60 plus category the men and women raced together. “Therefore, she not only dominated the ladies race but also beat some of the men in-

cluding the 2015 world champion,” Richter explained. He added that other notable performances from the athletes included Ruan le Roux and Cameron Rafferty who fought incredibly hard but just missed out on podium finishes coming in 4th in their races. The second day of the championships was the triathle event. Triathle is similar to biathle but incorporates the exciting discipline of laser shooting. Gareth Vorster turned out to be the NMBMPA hero with a fantastic performance to take gold in the junior men category. Keira van Heerden put in another good performance fighting with all she had and just missing out on making the podium. Richter said the weekend proved very successful for all the athletes, where five athletes made it to the SAMPA Biathle team to go to Spain to compete in the World Champs and 17 athletes qualified for the president’s team for the same event. “Most athletes’ attention will now shift to the Laser Run World City Tour taking place on August 12 in Nelson Mandela Bay,” he said. – REPORTER
