FTER more than three years the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has finally appointed a new Municipal Manag-

Apart from the appointment of a permanent Municipal Manager at the Council meeting on February 21, council also had to deal with a number of important items. They were:

Dr Lindiwe Msengana-Ndlela has been appointed on a five-year contract effective from March 1. The municipal manager position has been vacant since July, 2009, when Graham Richards took special leave to allow for an investigation into service delivery failures in the Metro. Msengana-Ndlela holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a University Education Diploma from Rhodes University, a Bachelor of Education and a Master of Business Leadership from UNISA, and a PhD (Urban Governance, Leadership and Local Economic Development) from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. Msengana-Ndlela, from Cala in the Eastern Cape, is the former Director General and Accounting Officer of the Department of Provincial and Local Government (2002-2009) who managed a budget that grew from R6 billion to over R24 billion, with a succession of unqualified audit opinions from the Auditor General. She played a leadership role in important committees, including the presidency. According to a statement from the Metro, she played a pivotal role in the drafting and implementation of municipal legislation. She has been recognised by Rhodes University for “Outstanding accomplishment in professional life and enhancing the reputation of Rhodes University” and was awarded the Rhodian Award in 2005. She is also a recipient of a research Fellowship award from the WK Kellogg Foundation of the USA, through a programme which promotes policy practice and research by women leaders in Southern Africa. Since last year she has been a PostDoctoral Fellow at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). “Dr Lindiwe Msengana-Ndlela is a seasoned and qualified administrator. Taxis taken off the road to make way for buses on certain routes PE EXPRESS REPORTER NELSON Mandela Bay marked another milestone on Saturday when 60 taxis were handed over to the municipality by the taxi industry as part of the governmentdriven NMB Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS). The handover forms part of the IPTS agreement between the municipality and the taxi industry to allow for ease of operation for the buses in certain routes where there is an oversupply of taxis. The handover also marked a journey dating back to five years when the decision taken by the NMB and the local taxi industry to partner in what is the first Integrated Public Transport System in the Eastern Cape. According to Mthubanzi Mniki, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Communications and Media Management Officer, the handover reaffirmed the unshaken commitment

of the taxi industry to the IPTS project. “The CBD to Summerstrand taxi route has been identified as it has an overflow of transport. The removal of some taxis from this route is to give space to operate. “The logic behind this move is that stakeholders who are part of the same project cannot compete for the same route as this poses operational complications for both parties concerned,” said Mniki. All the taxis were taken to the municipality’s fleet management depot in Diaz Road where they will be stored for 12 months. According to Mniki, as part of the agreement, each taxi owner will be compensated for any loss of legitimate income. The NMB and the Project team will work on the process of re-skilling the drivers and conductors who were working on the taxis affected. Some are expected to be absorbed within the IPTS process while some will be placed in different areas relat-

Nomvuyo Mpambani, a taxi owner, said she was elated about the arrangement as it ensured that everyone was accommodated. “This definitely is the beginning of big things to come and the arrangement we have with the municipality is quite fair,” she said. “We can only hope for the best going forward, the IPTS is definitely here to stay and we support it all the way,” said Mpambani. Another taxi owner, Ryno Plaatjies, said this was welcomed as this would revolutionise the taxi industry in the metro. “But we have trust in the municipality and we have strong belief that the IPTS is definitely going to succeed,” Plaatjies said.

Dit is die eerste Engelstalige skool in die Oos-Kaap wat al so ’n tak gestig het. Die stigting van die ATKV-Greysnare val boonop saam met die jaarlikse Afrikaans-week by Grey. Volgens Pieter Rademeyer, onderwyser by Hoërskool Grey, begin die Afrikaans-week vandag en beloof weer om wonderlike geleenthede te skep waar die manne in Afrikaans hul taal en kultuur kan vier. YOUNG Aidan Kisbey-Green of Port Elizabeth is only three years old, but has already had the honour of meeting Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall, and Desmond Tutu. Even more importantly, this young boy has survived a rare cancer after fighting it for almost half his life. Aidan is in remission after 14 months of chemotherapy and radiation, after being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at the age of two. To help other young cancer patients, Aidan’s dad Chris will take part in the 2013 Pick n Pay Cape Argus Cycle tour on Sunday March 10. He will be raising funds for the Little Fighters Cancer Trust who help the families of children with cancer. Chris, a chemical engineer at BASF, is a cycling enthusiast who has completed the Argus Cycle Tour 14 times before. “Last year he couldn’t participate because of Aidan’s chemotherapy. This year he will be taking part for other young cancer patients and is training very hard,” said Aidan’s mom, Cathy. Aidan, who turns 4 on April 13, was diagnosed with a rare form of tissue cancer after a lump was discovered in his thigh and removed in 2011.

“We had to go to Cape Town for the surgery, first round of chemotherapy and radiation,” said Cathy. “As the paediatric oncology experts are at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, all children from the Eastern Cape have to go down there for their initial treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, before they can continue their treatment in PE. This is not only a burden financially on families but also emotionally. I had to leave Chris and my daughters, Ashleigh (8) and Emma (6) behind to be with Aidan in Cape Town,” said Cathy. “And this is where the work of an organisation of Little Fighters is so important,” said Cathy. It was during this visit to Cape Town that Aidan and Cathy met Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, at the St George’s Cathedral where they were attending a service. “When she saw Aidan she made a beeline for him. She greeted him and asked him if he liked the feathers on her hat. Aidan also got a hi-five from Emeritus Archbishop Desmond Tutu,” said Cathy. Aidan also has another feather in his cap. Dad Chris shaved his head just before Aidan finished chemotherapy so they could have a race to see whose hair grew back faster - and, according to mom Cathy, the race was won by Aidan. IF a child lives with encouragement, he learns confidence. If a child lives with praise, he learns to appreciate. If a child lives with fairness, he learns justice.

derstand that the rejection isn’t personal even though it’s very, very painful. Children being children, they are often able to forgive and accept love that is restored. But often enough the reasons for rejection are hidden; sometimes from the child and sometimes even from the parent him- or herself.

If a child lives with security, he learns to like himself. If a child lives with acceptance and friendship, he learns to find love in the world. All children need the love of a parent in order to grow and be happy. Some children experience that their parents never gave them any emotional support or even seem to like them and that they are criticized, put down, and ignored. According to Hartwell-Walker, being rejected by the very people who are supposed to love, cherish and care for them is very painful. It goes well beyond “favouritism”. These teens and adults feel actively disliked by their parents. They report being beaten, yelled at, berated and belittled. Sometimes they even report not being adequately fed and cared for while other children in the family do get at least the minimum and often far more than they need. In some families, it’s gender-specific, with the boy being the little prince while the girls are in servitude. Sometimes the girls are exempt while the boy in the family is treated harshly. In rare instances, the parent is severely and persistently mentally ill and there’s no “sense” to the rejection at all. In his or her psychotic episode, the child is a changeling, or evil, or an alien from outer space — not their child at all. More common, but no less scary and confusing to a child, is the overwhelmed and depressed parent for whom the tasks of caring for a child are just too much of a burden to bear. Unable to cope, they push their child away. When the caretaking is assumed by friends and relatives who explain that it’s not that their parent doesn’t love them, but that they are ill, the children have a way to at least un-

A family secret is a common basis for rejection. The rejected child may have been fathered by someone other than the mother’s husband. The child’s very existence is a daily reminder of an affair, a relationship gone wrong, or a rape. In such cases, the couple agreed to parent the child and to act as if the dad is the biological father. Despite their good intentions, they find they can’t put aside the past. Rather than deal with their own feelings of regret, guilt, or anger, they take it out on the child. Parents who believed they were forced into a marriage that neither wanted due to the pregnancy, may also visit their unhappiness on their child. They stay together but they blame the child for trapping them into a loveless marriage. In some cases, one or both of the parents feels such shame for the premarital sex or affair, they can’t bring themselves to love him. On a more unconscious level, the rejected child may be a lightning rod for old family disputes. Father hates mother-in-law. Mother-inlaw favours one of her grandkids. That kid then gets rejected by father – which often makes grandma compensate all the more by spoiling the child. The fight has nothing to do with the child but it is nonetheless played out in the relationship the child has with his father. Similarly, one parent may pit a child against the other in an attempt to have an ally. If a father feels dominated by his wife, he may form a bond with his son grounded in their mutual disrespect for women. He “wins” the son’s devotion, turning him into a “mini-me” who carries on his underground battle with his wife.

Secrets and lies can be basis for rejection

Mother comes to resent the son as much as she resents her husband. Father can’t see past his own issues enough to recognize that the son longs for a relationship with his mother who by now can’t stand him. Some parents really don’t know any better. Having never been supported, encouraged or hugged themselves, they are clueless about how to show love. Having been rejected or perhaps actively abused, they repeat the only style of parenting they know. They learned what they lived and live what they learned, repeating the very parenting behaviour that gave them such pain.

The effect of parental rejection on a child

Whether intentional or not, the effect on a child who is rejected by one parent or both can be devastating. The result is often low self-esteem, chronic self-doubt, and depression. Often the impact lasts well into adulthood. As one of my clients said through her tears, “How can I expect anyone else to ever love me if even my own parents don’t?” It must be understood that parental alienation is a form of child abuse. While at this time, most cases of parental alienation syndrome are not associated with many accounts of physical abuse, emotional abuse is prevalent and most predominant. Not everyone gets the good parenting every child deserves. We don’t choose our parents. As children, we are so dependent we can’t leave them. But as we become adults, we can come to understand that the people we are born to, aren’t the final judges of our personal worth. A healthy response is to reject the rejection and to find other ways to fulfil the important role of a loving and wise elder who is a supportive presence in one’s life. For some, that role is played by a loving God. For others, it’s an older friend or relative who thinks he/she is terrific. For everyone, it can be his/her own adult self who finally loves, respects, and heals the rejected child within.

A mere half hour’s drive from Port Elizabeth next to the N2 south, this Gordon Ramsay master chef has established the country kitchen and padstal near the slopes of Lady Slipper at what will be the first of its kind new agri rural development in South Africa. The PE Express visited the Crossways Country Kitchen to see in action this talented and passionate master chef, who has travelled Europe, worked in England and France and locally featured as a guest at the popular Jan Braai television series.

When did your love for food determine your destiny?

My mum was a great cook. We grew up on a farm in the Stilbaai region and I had to attend boarding school. During weekends I helped her baking rusks. This is where it all started.

How did you became a Gordon Ramsay chef?

After school I joined the masses and went to the UK and ended up working as a waiter in Franks, a restaurant in Manchester. This was a stepping

stone for me to later enrol at a catering college, after which I went to France. Thereafter, for four years, I was employed at a place in Abersoch, North Wales where I worked for a great English cook named Nigel Skinner who actually was my mentor. I have always been a great fan of Gordon Ramsay and before heading back to South Africa I ended up working for him at his restaurant in Chelsea, which was regarded as the best restaurant in London.

Is being a Gordon Ramsay chef as tough as they say?

We were between 16-20 chefs working at his kitchen from 05:00 non-stop, consistently running and on your feet without a break for at least 12 hours. Then you’ll have an hour’s break and continue working until late. It was very hard work and I was working at Gordon Ramsay’s for ten months. At that stage after ten months I was sort of the fourth longest serving chef in the kitchen. His standard was just mind blowing. Now I’m back and want to do what I love most right here in the Eastern Cape.

What made you come to the Eastern Cape?

For the last few years all chefs have wanted to be in the Western Cape; 25% of the best chefs in Africa are there in Franschhoek, Stellenbosch or Cape Town. I wanted to be the fish which went against the stream and I just love the Eastern Cape and it has grown on me tremendously. Summer Style Kingklip CHEF Trevor Steyn from the Crossways Country Kitchen shared one of his favourite recipes with us - Summer Style Kingklip.

Ingredients

Fresh Kingklip 200g 2 Large potatoes Cherry tomatoes Fresh thyme Fresh tarragon Fresh chives Fresh garlic Olive oil Salt & pepper

Method Rosti: Roughly grate potatoes, season generously with salt and pepper. Squeeze out excess water into seperate bowl. Add fresh thyme to taste and 2 cloves of roughly chopped garlic. Heat olive oil in a non-stick pan. Place potato mixture into pan en press flat to fill pan. Cook until golden brown. Place in oven (preheated to 180 degrees Celsius) for about 25 minutes until crispy. Sauce: Place tomatoes in a sunny windowsill for a few hours to bring out the taste and colour. Chop into slices and drizzle with olive oil. Add herbs, roughly chopped. Kingklip: Heat olive oil in a non-stick pan. Add fish to hot pan. Roast on either sides for 5-7 minutes until golden brown. Set aside to relax for few minutes. Place rosti with the Kingklip on top and drizzle with your fresh tomato sauce. Garnish to your liking. Trevor used thyme, fennel and radish flowers and baby basil leaves.

I write in regard to an article from about 3 weeks ago, about someone who is the UN peace person in Uzbekistan - cannot remember their name. While I was glad to hear someone is there helping human rights, I was very disturbed by the comments attributed to that person regarding the life of people in Uzbekistan. I lived there with my family for 13 years, am fluent in the local language, and have weekly contact with several people there still. That government is in the top 10 worst oppressors on the human rights watch list, and its people suffer tremendously. The president and his daughter control the economy. He has been president for 20 years and will be

till he dies, after which his daughter will be imposed on the nation. Peasants and their children harvest cotton every year for almost no pay, and most people are on the bread line. There is also severe persecution for political or religious activity – whether you are muslim or Christian – prisons are full with these people. Several friends have recently been arrested and fined for having a Bible in their possession. I would ask that you correct the impression given to PE readers that all is well in Uzbekistan. I would also happily share my insights with the person you wrote about.

Managing agent earns commission on the side THE Property Poser panel has received an interesting query from a reader regarding a commission paid to the managing agent of his complex. The reader lives in an estate that comprises both free-standing and sectional title units, resulting in the appointment of both a homeowners’ association (HOA) and body corporate. Financial and administrative duties, as well as related management aspects, have been contracted to a managing agent. It appears that this agent has been collecting commission from a financial services provider to the managing bodies without disclosing it. The reader questions whether this is legal or ethical and whether there is any right of recourse against the agent or financial services provider. The appointment of a managing agent is contractual, says Susan Chapman from Rawson Properties Port Elizabeth Platinum. “As a first step, the HOA and body corporate should examine the contract establishing the relationship and its provisions.” According to Chapman, the rules under the Sectional Titles Act are quite clear as to the provisions that must appear in such a contract and place the burden of ensuring that such provisions exist on the trustees. “The provisions generally relate to terminating the appointment of the managing agent in instances of liquidation, fraud or dishonesty, or by way of special resolution of the body corporate.” Although the fraud or dishonesty aspect may appear applicable in the current circumstance, Chapman says it is arguably not as the agent’s conduct does not constitute a criminal offence. “The most likely remedy lies in the contract. This may well provide that the agent should not

enter into any dealings that may be perceived as conflicting with the terms of his or her appointment.” Similarly, the contract may also provide that any such potential dealings should be disclosed, whether for approval or otherwise by the HOA or body corporate, before entering into them, says Chapman. It may be so that the HOA and body corporate would have elected to continue to do business with the financial services provider in question despite the commission, says Stiaan Jonker of Smith Tabata Attorneys in PE. “Assuming that the conduct complained of does constitute a breach of contract, the contract may provide for specific remedies. Alternatively, the usual remedy in such an instance would be that of cancellation, presumably with the option of claiming damages.” Jonker says it is far more likely that the claim for recourse would lie against the managing agent rather than the financial services provider, as that party could quite easily maintain its innocence in the matter. “Furthermore, the managing agent is in a fiduciary relationship with the body corporate and HOA. While the conduct may not be in breach under the contract, it could be considered a material breach of the fiduciary relationship, giving rise to the same remedies.” Quantifying the damages may be difficult in this instance, unless one simply takes it as the additional one per cent paid in commission to the agent, says Jonker. “But this is an aspect to be discussed and considered in more detail by the parties and their attorney.” To ask a property-related question, visit www.propertyposer.co.za.

F1 Testing: Barcelona 2013 THE second week of testing was supposed to reveal another piece of the picture but inclement weather and a few reliability glitches turned the Barcelona test into a bit of a damp squib. The Circuit de Catalunya makes the grade year after year as the testing ground of choice for the Formula 1 field. Its long start/finish straight and combination of medium to high speed corners create the perfect blend for teams to put their cars and drivers through the gambit of tests. McLaren’s Sergio Perez set the fastest time overall, followed by Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso. The fastest times of the week’s running were a result of short one-lap runs on soft

tyres which cannot be seen as an indication of qualifying pace. Checo may have snatched the fastest time of the session but not everything at McLaren is as straightforward. The Woking-based team may have raised their rivals’ eyebrows with their pace at Jerez, but Jenson Button has revealed some concerns about the up and down pace of the MP4-28. “It’s been very tricky to understand where the car is. At times the car feels good; at other times it doesn’t. I am still hoping that we are competitive in Melbourne,” said Button. Chin up, JB, it’s a long season. No matter which car Lewis Hamilton climbs into, he will always be a

threat. However, Hamilton doesn’t share the opinion of other top drivers that he will be a race winner, much less a contender for the title in 2013. On the possibility of the W04 taking victory Hamilton said “hopefully by the end of the year, that’s our goal, but definitely not at the beginning.” Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso completed three days of running behind the wheel of the F138 and believes that the team will be able to challenge for the title. The former champion is adamant that the Maranello team will be strong in Australia and that improvements throughout the season will not be hard to come by. A bullish Fernando and quick Ferrari could be thrilling.

Red Bull Racing continued in the same vein of testing and going about their programme in a fairly inconspicuous manner. The same couldn’t be said for Lotus as this team came under scrutiny for suffering several reliability issues. Kimi Raikkonen was able to complete only 87 laps as data logging problems on day one were followed by gearbox issues on day two. Adrian Sutil has said that he has done everything he can to secure a drive at Force India for 2013. In what was an ‘audition’ for the yet unfilled second Force India seat, Sutil tested alongside the team’s reserve driver Jules Bianchi. Sutil completed 78 laps in hopes of returning to racing since being dropped by the Indian

team in 2011. Pastor Maldonado and Valterri Bottas completed the Barcelona test with what they called a ‘very impressive car.’ The Williams FW35, launched at the start of the week, received a glowing report from new signing Bottas. “I had a smile on my face after the first proper run. It feels better as a whole package, but one area I could point to where it’s better, is rear-end cornering grip and getting out of the corners,” shared Bottas. Only four more days of testing remain before the official start of the 2013 season. Sixteen days from now the first free practice session for the Australian GP kicks off.

But, hang on. Did you notice how everyone is smiling around here, in PE, today? Not surprising when you consider no-hopers Southern Kings, written off by all and sundry as out of their league, scored their first Super Rugby triumph – 22-10 against Australia’s Western Force – in their first outing at the Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday. If you were among the 32 000 attending the match, roaring the Kings on, then hats off to you gentlemen and ladies, too. It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t meant to be. But sheer raw courage in all aspects of the game – particularly rock-solid defence – saw the local lads dig deep for a totally merited triumph against the Australians. What’s more they did it despite losing captain Luke Watson on the half-hour. Hunting the ball and his opponents in his usual relentless fashion, the Kings’ skipper came crashing down in a defensive collision that saw a player’s forearm land, by accident, directly on his adam’s apple.

Not only in pain but with his breathing severely restricted, he was forced to leave the field moments later. More than anything this was a never-saydie team effort (centre Andries Strauss taking over the captaincy) but it marked the start of what could be a glittering career for 18-yearold Sergeal Petersen, who scored both Kings’ tries – both virtually individual efforts. The sturdily built wing, who until recently was still at school, showed great pace and was equally impressive on defence. His performance and the sheer joy he took in every aspect of what some feared might be a bridge too far for one so young, bodes for a bright future for the youngster. At the break the Kings trailed 5-10, and surely the pessimists were saying, “Ah, well, this is where the crunch comes.” At this stage the Force had also scored two tries. But unrelenting pressure by the Kings’ pack at scrum-time, consistently driving their opponents back, and dominance of the lineouts by Stephen Sykes, saw the Force begin to wilt. In the end the difference was the goal-kicking of Demetri Catrakillis. It was not the former Stormers flyhalf’s best game – but after a stuttering start his class began to tell. His four penalties, two from relatively far out, made all the difference. Admittedly Western Force aren’t among the toughest teams in the Super 15, but this was a fine effort by the fledgling SA team whose entry to the top level has largely been met with cynicism and scorn. They have a bye this week but no doubt coaching director Alan Solomons won’t allow his charges to rest on their laurels. Have a nice day, Mr Solomons, and you, too, Kiwi coach Matt Sexton.

Opel Meriva – so much more than a mom’s taxi BETTIE GILIOMEE WHEN a fellow motoring columnist who has no need for driving a mom’s taxi type MPV got excited about the virtues of the new Opel Meriva, I just knew that this must be quite an exceptional vehicle. It is therefore no surprise that the Opel Meriva 1.4T Cosmo is one of the 12 finalists in the Wesbank Car of the Year competition. During this competition, the finalists are judged according to a range of criteria which include innovation, technology, estetics, dynamics safety and value for money. The ultimate winner will be a car which creates excitement and stands out not only in its class but in the overall market as well.

Exterior

The new Meriva is a sleeker, more stylish and lower-slung vehicle compared to its predecessor. It sports the distinctive Opel family face but its most eye-catching feature is the way that the back doors open. They open in the opposite direction that back doors normally do - and when the front and back doors are opened it is very much the same way that cupboard doors are opened in opposite directions. FlexDoors, as the manufacturer has named them, mean that the rear passenger doors are hinged from the C-pillar. They offer a much wider opening than conventional doors and this especially benefits moms loading and unloading carseats. It also allows children to exit the car in such a way that the back door is a barrier between them and passing traffic in the parking lot. From behind, the Meriva’s look reminds one of that of the Honda Jazz with its glossy black trim and prominently angled boot door.

Interior

Ask any mom what the main criteria are

when considering a car to drive their precious cargo around with, and it would definitely include practicality, versatility, economy and safety, all encapsulated in a good-looking body at a value-for-money price. And it is here that the Meriva certainly ticks all the boxes. One of the most impressive features as far as practicality and versatility go is the FlexRail console system between the front seats. This aluminium rail allows storage boxes, cup holders and an armrest to be moved to the best arrangement for the driver and passengers. Figuring out all the different configurations could take a bit of time though. The Meriva offers more console space than most cars thanks to the position of the gear-lever and electronic parking brake. One would almost be tempted to call it a sunken console. When placing something in the cupholder it is quite low down and out of the way from your arm, making gear changing much easier than when the cupholders are next to or the same height as the gear-lever. Another versatile feature is the FlexSpace rear seat layout which incorporates theatrestyle seating. The rear seats can be moved backwards and towards the centre of the cabin, creating a lounge-type arrangement with more width and legroom for two. Alternatively, the outer seats can be moved forward to extend the cargo compartment, but will still seat three. The seats can also be folded down to increase the boot area. There is also a whopping 32-storage option around the interior.

Features

The Meriva is available in two trim levels in South Africa: the Enjoy and the Cosmo. Both make use of the 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine. In the base Enjoy model there is a lot of items which come as standard, including non-LED

daytime running lights, fog-lights, power windows, electric parking brake, auto door lock, aircon, onboard computer, seven-speaker sound system with AUX, USB and Bluetooth capabilities that can be operated from the steering wheel controls, cruise control, and parking sensors. Added to the higher spec Cosmo model are partial leather trim, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, a sunroof, automatic headlight control, rain-sensor wipers, climate control and chrome trim on the door handles.

Ride

The Meriva 1.4-litre turbocharged engine has more than enough oomph to get one around town, as well as out of town with plenty power for ease of overtaking. To go with this power, it sports a six-speed manual gearbox which is easy to get to grips with. The brakes had me stop at times before I meant to be stopping as they take very quickly. New records in Kings first Super 15 triumph SOUTHERN Kings fans who are still high on their team’s victory in their first Super Rugby game on Saturday, will have to wait until next week Saturday to see if their team can prove their detractors wrong for a second time. The Kings have a bye this week and will be preparing for their match against the Sharks on March 9 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. This past Saturday’s match between the Southern Kings and the Australian team Western Force, which was played in front of a crowd of almost 33 000 spectators, boasts many records for the team. By winning their first-ever match at this level, by 22-10, the Kings became the first debutant winner of the last four teams that joined Vodacom Super Rugby – in 2006 the Force lost 10-25 to Brumbies and the Cheetahs lost 18-30 to Bulls, and in 2011 the Waratahs crushed the Rebels 43-0 in the Melburnians’ debut. The other record is that Sergeal Petersen, at the age of 18 years and 206 days, became the youngest South African to play Vodacom Super Rugby since 1997 (eighth youngest ever). To make his debut even more special, last year’s Coca-Cola Craven Week Player of the Tournament scored two tries (fifth youngest try-scorer ever). Previously, the youngest South African to feature in Vodacom Super Rugby was former Springbok back Jaco van der Westhuyzen, who made his debut for The Sharks on 4 April 1997 against the Hurricanes in Durban, two days before his 19th birthday. Entries open for Iron Man, Iron Girl, Corporate Triathlon Challenge and Pritt IronKids PE EXPRESS REPORTER ENTRIES for Iron Girl South Africa, the Vodacom Corporate Triathlon Challenge and Pritt IronKids are now open. The weekend kicks off on Friday, April 12, with Iron Girl South Africa, being hosted in Nelson Mandela Bay for the third time. This women’s-only event has become an annual fixture amongst the ladies of the Bay and with the event reaching 1 000 entries last year shows just how popular the race has become. The 10km fun run can be done in two formats; either as an individual or as part of a mother-daughter team. Entries are R110 for individuals and R220 for mother-daughter teams. Enter at www.irongirl.co.za The next morning, Saturday April 13, will see company teams give each other a go at the Vodacom Corporate Triathlon Challenge powered by Algoa FM. This challenge is 10% of the full Ironman distance and consists of a 380m swim followed by an 18km cycle and 4.2km run. The race can be done as part of a corporate team, school team or as an individual. The general entry fee is R500 for corporate teams, R400 for school teams and R300 for individuals. Late entry will run from 16 – 29 March or until the event sells out. Late entry fee is R750 for corporate teams, R600 for school teams and R500 for individuals.
