Something Good for beachfront TINNEKE GOEDHALS
A
once popular spot on the PE Beachfront, that for many years has been allowed to decay, is set to become a popular hangout place again.
Something Good, also known as Bird Rock Road House many years ago, will soon be revamped. According to Grant Davies of Shimda, the project developers, the reason for taking on this project is that the site is one of South Africa’s prime inner city beachfront nodes that is currently undeveloped and not being used for its maximum benefit. “The site is an area for all sorts of recreational uses (cyclists, runners, families picnicking etc), but was a major eye sore and detracting from all other efforts being made to enhance the beachfront. The degradation of the existing building was promoting crime in the area. “The redevelopment of the roadhouse, together with other amenities, will go a long way to enhancing any visitor’s experience of our beachfront. We strongly believe that this proposal is sustainable and it responds directly to the community’s needs in a relatively short space of time.” This development proposal is based on the notion of redeveloping the existing site in as short a space of time as possible. “The proposal does not exceed the current footprint of the existing building. The existing structure is upgraded, given a more modern façade and made more user-friendly,” he said. Environmentally-responsible initiatives include the use of solar power geysers, collection of rain water and LED lighting as far as possible and a grey water system. They have worked closely with architects, MM Architects, to create a building that the PE public will be proud of.
