Train race is back with a twist

REPORTER

HE popular race between man and machine, the Great Train Race, is the inspiration behind a new train race to put Nelson Mandela Bay on the map in 2014.

The inaugural Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race will take place on the 17 July and unlike the original Great Train Race, it will see teams of five taking on a Metro train in a 40km challenge from PE to Uitenhage, via Despatch.

The narrow gauge Apple Express is currently out of service. Race organiser Michael Zoetmulder of Zports, said the new Train Race route would ensure much easier logistics for the teams and potentially enable companies to enter multiple teams. Individuals can also take part. Zoetmulder said races with a man versus machine concept have always been popular and Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT) have joined forces with Zports, and the municipality to ensure the revival of the Train Race.

NMBT CEO, Mandlakazi Skefile, said they welcomed the idea of the event as it would continue to promote the region’s status as a popular sporting destination. “NMBT supports the return of the Train Race concept,” Skefile said. “Unique industry events are becoming of greater importance as it enable a destination to market itself in this emerging market and also create a unique and authentic experience in the destination for the visitor. An event of this nature has the potential for a great increase in the social and economical benefits of the destination.” Zoetmulder said, “Over the past 3 years we

We hope to ensure that the Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race will avoid any of the controversy that surrounded the Great Train Race in that the new look train race will be a communitybuilding charity event with no cash prize money up for grabs. Teams will race the train for branding rights and winners’ floating trophies. “Like the Urban Run, which raised in excess of R230 000 for charity this year, the Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race will challenge teams and companies to support nominated charity projects within the communities along the way. Zports hope to partner with Rotary and their 6 local clubs to identify and manage these community projects to ensure that the Train Race leaves behind a sustainable legacy each year. The Nelson Mandela Bay Train Race will be a 40km relay event for teams comprising five runners and will include corporate, social, club and schools’ categories. Each year the race start will alternate between the Port Elizabeth station and Uitenhage station, with 2014 being the “up” run from Port Elizabeth to Uitenhage. Zoetmulder said opportunities are also being made available for companies to partner the event through the sponsorship of the various transition and water table points along the route. A YOUNG GIRL’S dream of being a fairy princess and owning her own Barbies to play with was realised this past weekend after a local company responded to the call by Reach for a Dream and PE Express to realise the dream of a child with a life-threatening illness. Stacey Kay from Edupuppets had approached Reach for a Dream after the PE Express “30 IUO pledges for Reach for A Dream” article. She offered her and Edupuppets services to any boy or girl with a dream of a fairy, princess, pirate or other theme party. Mandy (5) received her dream of owning Barbies at a special Fairy Party which she attended with two of her best friends on Saturday at Kings Court. At their arrival a fairy awaited Mandy and her friends and lead them to Fairy Hollow, which is Edupuppets’ venue at Kings Court Market. The dream started with a fairy telling them a story in the little theatre, after which the girls got some fairy lessons. The girls then made their own little fairy hand puppets. This was followed by a fairy tea party complete with fairy cupcakes. Afterwards, amidst a lot of fairy dust, Mandy received a Barbie with little white bunnies, a Barbie Fashionista doll, a Barbie house, a Barbie in her pink little sports car and Barbie clothes. Only few days left to Shear madness apply now REPORTER JUST days before the World Record Attempt for the Shear Madness for Cancer, organisers are asking PE residents to send in their applications before they miss out on a day that they say will prove to be fun and bring awareness to CANSA taking place on November 30 at Kings Court in Walmer. Shear Madness for Cancer Organiser, Simon Clark, said they still need more people to join in on the madness for cancer awareness that will see many having their heads shaved. Clark said they are still short of their target of 450 participants for the world record.

Registration costs R30 and recipients will receive a sponsorship form and a bandana. Any one wishing to be a part of it can register at participating Superspar outlets, as well as Images 1 and MarcAndrew Hairdressing. “In conjunction with theWorld Record Attempt there will be a Go Punk or Go Monk Shave and spray event where participants can shave their hair (if they don’t qualify to be a part of the World Record attempt) or spray it crazy colours if they don’t want to shave it. There will also be a wall of remembrance where people can light candles and write messages, and a 5km walk of remembrance taking place at 17:00 to finish the day,” said Clark.

New minimum wage increases for domestic workers REPORTER NEW minimum wage rates for domestic workers will become effective on December 1. The new hourly minimum rate for a domestic worker who works more than 27 hours a week is R9.63, the new weekly minimum rate is R433.35 and new monthly minimum rate is R1877.70. The new hourly minimum rate for a domestic worker who works less than 27 hours a week is R11.27, the new weekly minimum rate is R304.29 and new monthly minimum rate is R1318.48. Cape Labour & Industrial Consultants has

published a booklet which outlines all the requirements of the law pertaining to domestic workers. According to Bernard Reisner of Cape Labour & Industrial Consultants, the booklet is entitled “You, Your Domestic Worker and the New Laws” and covers the wide spectrum of facts, ranging from general conditions of employment to letters of employment, a pay slip format, a written warning format and fair dismissal procedures. IN A BID to meet dire shortages of health care employees in the Eastern Cape, a new emergency medical care degree will be offered by Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) from next year. The four-year degree, which was given the final go-ahead by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) recently, will form one of the first building blocks towards a fully-fledged Medical School for NMMU by 2020, and offer paramedic students unique training opportunities. The Bachelor of Emergency Medical Care (BEMC) students will especially benefit from the university’s location – at the coast and within easy reach of the rural interior - while working in tandem with the pre-hospital Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the provincial EMS College and the city’s six hospitals. Adding to the unique experience will be the integration of students with some of the best volunteer organisations in the country – the metro’s National Sea Rescue Institute

(NSRI), the Mountain Club of SA’s Search and Rescue team and SA Lifesaving. Programme manager Nico Louw is one of just three graduate paramedics Eastern Cape. The province only has 51 advanced life support paramedics, of 2 305 nationally. This is a ratio of one to 129 411 patients, compared to the South African norm of 1: 21 258. “This means it will take us at least 13 years to attain the norm even if we are to produce 20 paramedics a year. We are convinced that the initiation of this programme will significantly contribute to the upliftment of emergency medical services – not only in the province but ultimately in SA,” says Louw. Prospective students need an Admission Point Score of 36, with English, maths, physical science and life science as pre-requisites to study this degree as it covers both the medical and rescue side of saving lives. According to Louw, all prospective students for the B(EMC) will undergo selection process which includes a full medical report, a rigorous physical assessment and an interview by a team within the newly-formed School of Clinical Sciences in the Faculty of Health Sciences

Learn to make your own jewellery, belts REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum, situated at 1 Park Drive, will host a number of workshops in December and January to show children how to use beads and other material to make headpieces, bracelets, belts, necklaces, purses and anklets amongst others. They will get a chance to discover how different cultures used to decorate themselves with clothing, jewellery and other accessories, creating and decorating their own jewellery and accessories with beads and various other materials. Nelson Mandela Municipal spokesperson, Kupido Baron, said the colourful workshops will be linked to a current exhibition detailing the beadwork of the Mfengu people who used beads to communicate different messages about who they were. “The youngsters will be able to take small personal objects to decorate like cell phone pouches, head bands, belts, etc.,” said Baron. Each workshop costs R30, inclusive of art material and equipment. The workshops start at 9am and will finish at 12pm. Bookings are essential as space is offered on first come first serve basis. The workshop dates are:

NMMU brand excels again REPORTER NELSON Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) has done it again – winning the most awards for marketing and communications within the field of higher education nationally. NMMU won 14 awards, including three category victories, at the Marketing, Advancement and Communication in Education (MACE) Excellence Awards at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein this week. More than 20 institutions of higher learning entered the awards. Judges praised the high overall standard of NMMU’s entries. “It is obvious that the NMMU team take great pride in what they do. Not only are the

projects, publications and other activities produced and presented well, but they are also underpinned by a carefully compiled strategy. “In many instances the entries by NMMU were used as the benchmarks in categories,” said MACE Excellence Awards co-ordinator Jandre Bakker. The university scooped the top awards in the categories of publications, social media and video production, to win three of the eight sections. It also won five individual excellence awards.. The other awards were for NMMU’s university twitter handle, NMMU4U; its Facebook page; a Law publication; its student diary; its video contentsharing site, NMMUonTube and its 10 000 Dibaz campaign.

Hip Hop artist going to battle LIZEKA TANDWA A Zwide Hip Hop artist will be going to a Battle for the “Kings of Street Rap” facing off with the country’s best underground Hip Hop artist as the only Eastern Cape representative in Johannesburg on November 30. Elijah Ngongela, who has been performing in battles for many years, said he was excited and overjoyed to be the only artist in the province chosen to join the prestigious “Kings of Street Rap” battle run by popular entertainment company, Slaghuis. “This is an amazing platform for a Hip Hop artist as you are exposed to many people in the industry and you also have a chance to show your skill by having a battle one on one or play in words with some of the best up and coming artists in the country,” said Ngongela. Ngongela said he was chosen to battle at the competition after many people voted for him through the “Kings of Street Rap” facebook page. “It’s amazing to know that many people in my city and

even my province love my work. Battling is so important to me as is Hip Hop and I want to see myself further in the culture,” he said. Ngongela is no stranger to Hip Hop accolades having been chosen as the best in the Grahamstown Arts festival battle competition two years back and winning the Scrambles for Money battles in Cape Town.

CITIZEN JOURNALISM: SUBMIT YOUR STORY AND WIN

Want to train in the newsroom? ALWAYS wondered what it would be like to work in a newsroom? Or, are you a school pupil wanting to find out if journalism could be the career for you? Now you may win the opportunity to do just that and spend time training in our newsroom, simply by showing us your reporting skills through our Citizen Journalism initiative on our website www.pe-express.co.za. We are looking for volunteer citizen journalists to tell us about events happening in your area. We also want to know about the issues facing your community. And don’t forget about the good news stories – we are always interested in those. You may have a story to share; you may want to write reviews for our website or offer traffic reports on your way to work. You could be a keen gardener with lots of top tips to offer or simply have a fascinating, local story to tell. As long as it is local, we are interested! School newspapers Reporters from school newspapers stand a chance of winning three subediting training sessions by PE Express editor Bettie Giliomee.

Editing the news, writing headlines and captions and page layout will be dealt with. The editor and two reporters for Grey High School’s “Grey Matter” received subediting training this year and subsequently took the third spot in the prestige national competition for school newspapers run by Die Burger. Student reporters Citizen journalism is also the ideal opportunity for journalism students to get their work published in print. In addition, by submitting their stories, they not only stand a chance of having their stories printed, but also shadowing the PE Express journalists for a week during the university holidays. This is how it will work: All the stories or events must be submitted through our website, at www.peexpress.co.za. On the home page you will see a section on the right “Become a Citizen Journalist”. You will need to login/register, but this is now also a quicker and easier process, because you can log in with your Facebook account, if you have one. Then, simply upload your story, photo or event and click on submit. And you’re done . . . it’s that easy.

It’s all about triathlon THE About IT Triathlon Summer Series takes place on the 16th, 22nd and 26th December and promises to be a lot of fun for seasoned and budding triathletes as a popular sprint distance triathlon for both teams and individuals. The About IT Series kicks off on Monday 16th December with the traditional Pollok to Schoenies triathlon with the first leg being a 750m swim off Pollok Beach followed by a 20km cycle to Schoenmakers Kop and ending with a 5km trail run on the Sacramento Trail. Individuals and teams are encouraged to have seconds that will look after their transition kit given the separate start/finish areas. This is followed with Round 2 on Sunday 22nd December at Pollok Beach and Round 3 at Port St Francis on Thursday 26th December. Online registration for the Series is encouraged to secure your Series number which you must keep for all races in the Series you take part in, see www.trisummerseries.co.za. Your online registration will cover your first race of the Series, irrespective of which one it’ll be so you are encouraged to enter soonest. The first 200 online entrants for the Series each receive a free t-shirt. Ocean Series round 5 on Sunday The 5th and final round for 2013 of the Ocean Racing Series™ takes place this Sunday morning at Hobie Beach. Series members must report for entry between 7.30am and 8.30am with racing starting from 9am.

Tavcor Suzuki celebrates 1000th new car sold milestone REPORTER TAVCOR Suzuki Port Elizabeth, held a special Suzuki 1000th new car sold celebration, to say thank you to all their loyal customers. This occasion was marked by performing a special hand over of the 1000th new car sale to owner, Patricia Wilcock. Tavcor were looking for expansion 4 years ago but had to consider taking on a brand that would meet the expectations of what Tavcor customers were used to. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The reliability of the Suzuki product convinced the Tavcor board of directors to invest strategically in the long term, as they be-

lieved the brand would earn their space in the South African passenger car market. The Dealership was opened in February 2009 and up until October 2013, 1 000 new cars have been sold,â&#x20AC;? said Clive Taverner, Dealer Principal of Tavcor Suzuki. Volkswagen AG in Germany also invested in the Suzuki brand about 2 years ago and still owns a 20% shareholding in Suzuki worldwide today. Taverner said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tavcor have been Volkswagen dealers in Port Elizabeth since 1955, and dedicated Audi dealers, for the last 30 years as well, so associating itself with a new brand was a decision taken with extreme care and diligence.â&#x20AC;?

COMPLETING HIS second year as Springbok coach, Heyneke Meyer, has had much cause to smile lately. “Allez les France, allez!” is the triumphant shout when Le Bleus are in the ascendancy. At the Stade de France last weekend, however, Meyer might well have been the one trumpeting, “Allez les Springboks, allez!” For not only did his team’s 19-10 defeat of France mean a clean 3-0 outbound tour record – at the same time increasing to 13 its number of victories in their last 15 outings – but also enabled the coach to shrug off some unfair criticism of the squad’s overall ability. Thereby, of course, vindicating his own belief in its capabilities. Not everyone was happy with these beliefs. Was it really necessary to include an old warhorse like Bakkies Botha, many complained. He was surely over the hill? Those who thought so must have been surprised at the way the “old man” took to the massive collisions among the forwards after the unfortunate early injury to young Eben Etzebeth. Having settled down in midfield with captain, Jean de Villiers, Jacque Fourie was far more effective this time around. While De Villiers himself may be getting on in terms of high-intensity test rugby, he’s undoubtedly producing some of the best form of his career, and while Fourie du Preez may be Meyer’s top scrumhalf choice, Ruan Pienaar is not the slouch some of his critics aver. The player himself made that clear in Paris. One could go on. Many shone in this Paris test. Brazil Season Finale: The End Of An Era THE myth that the number thirteen has any negative connotation to it is of little consequence to Sebastian Vettel. A fourth world title and 13 Grand Prix wins in 2013 has made sure of that. It is difficult to fathom the true impact and understanding of Red Bull Racing and Vettel’s domination this season. Therefore, statistics are the only possible way of putting this incredible run of results into some sort of perspective. Out of a possible maximum of 475 points Vettel scored 397, took nine pole positions and equalled Michael Schumacher’s record of thirteen Grand Prix wins in a season. However, Vettel took this record a step further and became the only driver in the history of Formula 1 to win nine consecutive races in the same season. To get to his ninth victory in a row Vettel was given the merest of challenges at the start of the Brazilian GP as Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg charged into the lead of the race. However, within two laps Vettel dispatched of the Silver Arrow, retook the lead of the race and set off on building a gap. Behind the German the battle for the podium positions saw Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton and Mark Webber battling it out. Webber was able to overtake first Hamilton then good

friend, Alonso, to run second by lap 13. The race settled quite quickly as Rosberg faded with an oversteering Mercedes and Vettel merrily built his lead to more than ten seconds over teammate Webber. Gentle rain fell throughout the 71 laps of the race but it never reached the level of needing a switch to the intermediate tyres. As the top three in the form of Vettel, Webber and Alonso settled it was Jenson Button who delivered one of his best drives of the season. Despite a 14th place start, JB drove brilliantly to finish fourth, McLaren’s best position of the season. Second or even third place in the constructor’s title wasn’t intended for Lotus as Romain Grosjean was forced into retirement on the first lap with an engine oil leak and Heikki Kovalainen could only muster 14th place. Despite a difficult afternoon Mercedes pipped Ferrari to second in the constructor’s championship by six points. The Brazilian GP brought the 2013 season to a close but more significantly brought with it the end of an era. Twelve years ago an Aussie named Mark Webber started his first Formula 1 career behind the wheel of a Minardi. He scored points on debut at his home race but this was only the cusp of what would become a great Formula 1 career. Webber’s first

race victory at the 2009 German GP saw the Aussie deliver one of the most memorable drives of his career. Webber has since won eight more races and through all of them he has been the straight-talking Aussie that many have to revere as one of the greatest racers Australia has produced. Few people have raced and conducted themselves with more integrity than Mark Webber and whatever may happen AussieGrit and his tenacious character will be remembered in Formula 1 circles for some time to come. The 2013 Brazilian GP marked the end of the V8 engine era after eight seasons in F1. Fernando Alonso became the first ever V8 champion in 2006. French engine manufacturer Renault ends the V8 era as the most successful manufacturer with five constructor’s and five driver’s titles. The Renault engine annihilated the competition with 60 wins, 66 pole positions and 56 fastest laps. The 2013 season has been one of a peerless German and his Austrian team’s absolute domination. Never before has this level of supremacy been seen in the sport. Although it may not have been everyone’s cup of tea as a sheer piece of inspired engineering the RB9 commands tremendous respect and appreciation. Take a bow Red Bull Racing.
