SASSA said it does not have any relationship with, nor does it endorse, any company that offers financial products such as microloans, cellphone airtime, insurance products including life funeral cover and clothing accounts. According to regulation, SASSA is not allowed to make any deductions from beneficiaries. The social assistance legislation stipulates that SASSA can only deduct a maximum of 10% for funeral policies. Wheelchair Wednesday campaign scores again REPORTER THE Wheelchair Wednesday project wrapped up another successful campaign on September 21 when it handed over 165 wheelchairs to needy residents in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro. Organised by the Association for Persons with Physical Disabilities (APD), in association with SPAR Eastern Cape, the concept has been running for six years and APD chief executive Brian Bezuidenhout said it is showing no signs of slowing down. With more than 100 000 disabled residents in the region, he said creating awareness for their challenges remains a priority. In that time, he said the annual campaigns had generated funds for 668 wheelchairs, as well as R2.4 million for needs within the various operational areas of APD in Nelson Mandela Bay. “We want to involve businesses to
see life from a disability point of view and we, therefore, invited company executives to spend four hours in a wheelchair and to submit a report about their experience,” said Bezuidenhout. “In this way, we can create awareness regarding issues relating to accessibility for people with disabilities within the business environment of Nelson Mandela Bay.” Bezuidenhout said they had included the city leadership in the campaign this year to get their input. “We had an extensive involvement from members of the mayoral committee and executive mayor Athol Trollip, himself, spent time in a wheelchair.” He added that they would continue with the awareness campaign in its current format. “This model works so if it’s not broken, don’t try to fix it,” he said. “We will, however, involve more and more decision-makers at director level in the future.” He acknowledged the important
role SPAR played in the campaign. “Their five-year involvement has been the lifeblood of the project. “Their sincere commitment to our cause and their trust in our motives have been the key to the wonderful story we tell.” SPAR EC sponsorships and events manager Alan Stapleton said he was given a sobering introduction to Wheelchair Wednesday. Linking his experience to his passion for playing squash, Stapleton said he had felt like an outsider when a troublesome injury sidelined him from the game. He acknowledged the donations that were made, but, more importantly, the time given by city leaders. “We have all learnt to understand and we have all been changed. “Hopefully, we have also become aware of how inadequate our facilities are. We may have just scratched the surface, but we have given 165 people a chance to move out of their houses, out of their immobility and experience the world.”

Help set new blood donation world record UITENHAGE is attempting to add its name
to the Guinness Book of Records, when Engen Penford hosts an attempt to collect the most units of blood ever collected in one day. The attempt to set the record will take place on Friday, October 6 from 9am to 6pm. The special blood drive event will be officially opened by the Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Athol Trollip. Engen Penford dealer Gerrit Meyer said that they “want to go big this year and ensure that Engen Penford’s annual blood drive will make a real difference.” In order to set a new world record, a total of 150 units of blood need to be donated. “We’d love everyone to help us put Uitenhage on the map as the town donating the most units of blood in one day,” said Marthinus Greyling, the organiser of the record attempt. Walk for Cancer event The very first Uitenhage Walk for Cancer will also be hosted by Engen Penford in support of Cancer Awareness month which falls in October. It will be held on October 7 at 8am. “We’re aiming to have 5 000 entries. “All profits will go towards The Igazi Foundation which is based at the Provin-
cial Hospital in Port Elizabeth.” Igazi Foundation The Igazi Foundation is nationally and internationally recognised as the champion of haematology issues in the broader struggle for better health care services in South Africa. It is the only dedicated haematological NGO in the country. Participation is R30 per adult and R20 per child. According to Greyling, the objective of the walk is to create awareness regarding cancer and show the importance of donating blood. “Over the festive season, which is fast approaching, blood normally is high in demand. As a business, and a brand with integrity, we want to show our community and the world that we support blood donations. “Someday, somewhere in our lifetime we all might need blood which is why we all are obligated to help in any way that we can,” said Greyling. Seelan Naidoo, Engen general manager: retail, said, “Engen is proud to be a part of the Uitenhage Big Walk for Cancer initiative. “We fully support the blood drive which plays such a vital part every day in saving

Cake show to feature worldfamous creation
REPORTER
THE world-famous Rolkem World Cake will be on display this weekend at the South African Cake Decorators Guild (SACDG) PE Dolphin Coast Branch’s 2017 Cake Show. The magnificent cake was designed and created by cake artist, Jennifer Ann Nel, with the aim of achieving a Guinness World Record for the Cake Most Travelled category and raising funds for Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer. The sponsor, Rolkem, will be donating money for the total number of kilometres that the cake has travelled, both nationally and internationally. The Rolkem World Cake is making its way to Port Elizabeth from Birmingham where the International Cake Show took place recently. Though the outcome of the world record attempt is not yet available, having the cake at the 2017 Cake Show has added about 2 200km to the total number of kilometres travelled. The Cake Show theme, Cakes Around the World, was inspired by this world cake. Apart from the Rolkem World Cake, this weekend’s exhibi-
tion will also feature cakes created by cake artists from around the country. The programme for Saturday, September 30, will include demonstrations of sugar art techniques – a new technique, as well as techniques developed by the SACDG that have never been seen anywhere in the world. There will also be celebrity appearances and competitions that will take place during the course of the weekend. A number of quality lucky draw prizes will be up for grabs at the event. The event promises to bring loads of fun and laughter to the whole family with cupcake and biscuit decorating, a colouring in competition and a jumping castle for the kids to work off the sugar rush. The exhibition will open on Friday and Saturday from 9am to 5pm and on Sunday from 9am to 1pm at the Hoogland Dutch Reformed Church. Entry is R20 per adult and R10 for children under the age of 12. Bookings can be made with Cathy Crouse on 083 235 6339.

Teacher’s garden project empowers learners
NEWS 7
De Vos Malan Primary turns 75
THANDI SETOKOE KNOWN as “Miss Greenfingers”, Seyisi Primary School teacher Nomonde Ntsundwana is using an innovative way to teach learners through a flourishing food garden, which she views as a natural laboratory where learners gain practical knowledge and do research. Ntsundwana has been a teacher for more than 20 years and started the garden project in 2005 at her former school, Canzibe Primary in Motherwell. “I have a great love for gardening and I grew up in an era where gardening was important, so I want to teach the learners the importance of it. “Gardening offers hands-on, experiential learning opportunities in a wide array of disciplines, including the natural and social sciences, mathematics, arts and culture and nutrition,” the KwaZakhele English and social sciences teacher explained. The garden supplies fresh produce to the school’s daily nutrition programme and also generates income for the school through the sale of excess produce. “The garden really teaches the children a lot – things such as germination and also to gain insight into the different plants and the seasons in which they can be planted.” Ntsundwana, who started the garden with her bare hands, described the garden project as a way of educating the learners about entrepreneurship. “As the school we are selling the seedlings to the learners at a minimal amount. “So, the learners can then go and sell the seedlings to the community at a higher price. “In this way, they can make pocket money for themselves while also proving hunger relief within the community,” she said. In 2011, the single mother of two won the Kudu Award from the South African National Parks in the category of individual environmental education and capacity building. A year after, “Miss Greenfingers” was selected as a finalist in the educator’s category of the Shoprite Checkers Women of the Year Award as an environmental awareness advocate and for championing the greening of schools across the Nelson Mandela Bay. “It was really humbling for
Teacher Nomonde “Miss Greenfingers” Ntsundwana. PHOTO:SUPPLIED me; I could not believe it. I never expected to be recognised for my gardening project,” she said. During that same year, she was also chosen as one of six eco-pioneers profiled by Total in its quest to “recognise institutions and individuals who are committed to protecting the environment and actively working towards a greener planet”. Shoprite has now taken hands with Ntsundwana to further grow and expand the garden in order to ensure the long-term sustainability of the project. “Shoprite helps us with the compost; they provide us with seedlings, trees and the tools needed. We are really grateful for all that they do,” she explained. Much like seedlings become plants and nourish the communities around them, the partnership with Shoprite has further empowered Nstundwana to expand the reach of her education and the impact of her garden. “Our wish is for all the learners to have food gardens at their homes so as to reduce poverty. “The garden doesn’t belong to the school, it belongs to the whole community.”
The staff and learners of De Vos Malan Primary School in Schauderville celebrated the school’s 75th birthday last Friday with cake, party packs and entertainment for the learners. At the back are Thembelani Dayimani and Juliet Beven (both Grade 7). In front from left are Lee-Jaune Botha (Grade 3), principal John Jansen, Ashlonique Jonas (Grade 2) and Tiffany Barnes (Grade 4). Masifunde opens Changemaker Academy in township REPORTER MASIFUNDE Learner Development officially opened their Changemaker Academy, an educational hub, in the heart of Walmer Township on September 1. Masifunde provides educational support to more than 600 motivated learners from impoverished communities through academic support, life skills training and extracurricular activities in the fields of arts, media and sports. The Masifunde Changemaker Academy (MCA) aims to mould holistically well-educated learners with solid values, self-confidence and eloquence. The learners are empowered to take responsibility for their

own lives, as well as their social environment, and thereby act as changemakers. In the mornings, MCA functions as a service provider to out-of-school youth and the three local schools, offering computer and visual arts classes. It is also home to Masifunde’s Montessori Preschool. In the afternoons, the centre offers computer, visual arts, music and drama classes. More than 200 guests celebrated the joyful occasion of the grand opening of the centre, together with the team and beneficiaries of Masifunde. In his keynote speech, Jonathan Lawack of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM), said, “Education is more than just the books; it must look at the learner in a holistic manner. That’s what Masi-
funde does by offering not only academic support, but also life skills, extracurricular activities and social assistance.” Executive Dean of the Faculty of Education of Nelson Mandela University, Muki Moeng, added, “Many children unfortunately loose the curiosity and eagerness to learn when they enter the mainstream school system. It is, therefore, important to find ways how to ignite the fire again within them – just like Masifunde does with their extramural programmes.” Zukiswa Maku, principal of Walmer Lower Primary School, emphasised the mutual benefits that can be created between schools and non-profits. The school provides space for Masifunde’s programme in the afternoons, and

in return, Masifunde established a computer lab in their school, renovated classrooms and runs their school library. Maku was excited about the upcoming developments, which will train her learners in a visual arts and life skills curriculum, as well as in computer literacy, from next year. The ceremony was mastered by Sibabalwe Singeni and Sibusiso Kelemana, two beneficiaries of Masifunde, while highly professional and entertaining choir and drama performances gave an insight into the creative programmes Masifunde has to offer. International art exhibition to celebrate Heritage month REPORTER IN celebration of Heritage Month, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum will play host to an international art exhibition, called The Way of Water from today. On May 6 this year, 11 artists and art collectives from six different countries produced simultaneous art performances that were recorded through photographs and videos for exhibition. Their aim was to bring attention to the fragile marine environment that is threatened by pollution, excessive fishing and encroaching human development and industry. The participating artists are: . Flavia Vaccher from Ouidah Benin; . Jospi Zanki and Matija Zdunic from Zadar, Croatia; . Davide Skerlj from Venice, Italy; . Manolo Cocho, with the DRY collective group, from San Luis Potosí, Mexico; . Magda Minguzzi with the coordinators of the local Khoikhoi community, Chief Margaret Coetzee and Chief Xam Gaob Maleiba, from Port Elizabeth; . Ethan Cornell, Justin Frankel, Megan Stuttles, Jimi Pantalon and eXtll from Brooklyn, United States. The Port Elizabeth performance on May 6 took place in the Cape Recife Nature Reserve where Khoisan and Khoikhoi sacred places

are located in the form of fish traps. They are the most ancient structures present in the local area constructed by the Strandlopers which makes it highly significant in terms of heritage. “The representatives of the Khoikhoi people, as descendants of the Strandlopers, practised ancient rituals, such as the ‘cleansing ceremony’ in front of the ocean where the traces of the fish traps are still visible,” explained Magda Minguzzi. “It was a metaphorical act, related to identity and culture, that connects our contemporary reality (pollution and exploitation of the sea) with a time in the past when human beings were in harmony with Mother Earth and the sea.” The project was supported by the Nelson Mandela University, AEON-ESSRI (Africa Earth Observatory Network, Earth Stewardship, Science, Research Institute), the Nelson Mandela Bay Arts, Culture and Heritage Department, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and Pine Lodge. International partners include the Juliet contemporary art magazine, University of Trieste in Italy and the Hdlu Croatian visual artist association. The international art exhibition will open at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum tonight at 5:30pm for 6pm with the event finishing around 7:30pm. It will run until November 30. The museum is open Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm, but is closed on Tuesday mornings.

Golf enthusiasts gear up for MES SPIRITS are running high at MES Port Elizabeth as they prepare to host their annual Charity Golf Day
at the PE Golf Club on October 17. MES PE was established in 2008 and provides residential
care and a skills development programme for homeless and unemployed individuals. They, along with the God Restores Our World (GROW) job-and-life rehabilitation programme, will be the beneficiaries of the charity golf day. The GROW project provides homeless individuals an alternative to begging on the streets as it affords participants the opportunity to develop strong work ethics while earning money through honest hard work. The social work department assesses clients who voluntarily decide to become part of the MES PE social projects and equips and empowers them towards a sustainable exit back into the community via a supportive and nurturing, yet, challenging rehabilitation process and a unique individual development plan. With sufficient funding, MES PE can expand these projects to provide further training to the clients and participants who show commitment. Joining MES PE, the GROW project and the corporates, who have already committed their support to the charity golf day, could mean the difference between a life on the street and one filled with a bright future to a homeless individual of the Nelson Mandela Bay. The event offers a number of prizes, a Werner spitbraai dinner and the opportunity to network, while spending the day on the golf course for a good cause. Distinguished guests will include Executive Mayor Athol Trollip, several councillors, local sports celebrities and other high-profile businessmen and -women from the Bay. Bookings can be made with Alta on alta@mes.org.za or 076 531 6749. – REPORTER

Homegrown video wins hearts with touching tale REPORTER A TRULY South African story of deep and lasting friendship, cutting across time, space and difference, and produced entirely in the Eastern Cape, is moving hearts across the country, and inspiring hundreds of people to share their hope for the country. The short brand film, released by Port Elizabeth NPO Mohair South Africa and titled Weaving Stories for a Lifetime, tells the story of two small boys who grow up together on a Karoo farm in the 1980s. They go their separate ways, one taking over his father’s farm and the other blazing a trail in a completely different direction, but ultimately find one another again. The story, a weaving together of several true stories, was created by Port Elizabethbased video production company Rooftop, and shot on location in the Karoo and Nelson Mandela Bay, including some shots at Woodridge Preparatory School. Released on Mohair SA’s Facebook page on September 8, the video has already notched up 480 000 views, 4 200 likes, over 3 000 shares and more than 400 comments, coming from people from all walks of life, and from all over the country and abroad. “This is just so awesome, tears running down my cheeks, a truly African story with compassion, dedication, passion. I love it,” wrote Verena Hinsch. Lindsay Humphreys and Anle Marais, Mohair SA’s marketing team, said they wanted the brand film “to be authentic”, therefore, so based it on “a collection of life stories collected over time”. “It shows the power of universal appeal, themes of friendship, nostalgia and success. Our hope was that this brand film would both educate and inspire, while the story of mo-
hair is told from the farm to the fashion ramps of the world,” said Humphreys. “Port Elizabeth is the world’s mohair capital, so it was our intention from the start to make this an Eastern Cape production, highlighting local talent and showcasing our beautiful region,” Marais said. “The challenge was working with boisterous boys and rompish angora goats on one set! But the highlight was seeing how naturally a real friendship developed between the two boys (played by Derek Ayankoya and Elijah Jackson).” The theme tune, called Growing Up, was written and recorded for Mohair SA by Charlie Finch. It was released in South Africa on September 15. ) Watch the video on the PE Express Facebook

Nelson Mandela Bay Stars can unify city – Trollip REPORTER USING sport as a unifying force has become a powerful element in South African society and Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Athol Trollip is confident the Nelson Mandela Bay Stars cricket team will do that for the region. Trollip is enthusiastic about what the T20 Global League can offer the region after Port Elizabeth was selected as one of the host cities for the eight franchises which make up the competition. Including high-quality international and national players, mixed with a sprinkling of local stars, Cricket South Africa are hoping the tournament will catch the public’s imagination, creating a local equivalent to the Indian Premier League and Australia’s Big Bash. The mayor said the Nelson Mandela Bay Stars would have an extremely important role to play. “The franchise is integral to our vision of ‘One city with one future’ as sport has always been such a strong unifying force in South Africa,” he said. He added that he was very excited to hear about the T20 Global League and thrilled that the city was chosen as one of the hosts. “The franchise owner, Ajay Sethi, has fantastic plans for the city’s team and we are all looking forward to the competition.” Trollip said the metro had done all they could to ensure the team adopted the name of the late president, the first sporting team
in the world to have the legendary statesman attached to it. “I have a good feeling after meeting Ajay and the vision he has for this team. “Just look who he has assembled – there are some real legends in the squad.” Under the mentorship of former Proteas player Mark Boucher, the Nelson Mandela Bay Stars will have Kevin Pietersen, one of the best English batsmen in the modern era, as well as world-class leg-spinner Imran Tahir. In February this year, Tahir was named the number one bowler in both the One-Day International and Twenty20 world rankings. Trollip called for Nelson Mandela Bay fans to support the team and the competition. “We will see great cricket, with a legendary team and great coaching staff,” he said. “This is the stuff of dreams and we would like everyone to get behind the Nelson Mandela Bay Stars.” Besides keenly anticipating the sporting element, Trollip said events such as these were crucial for the region. “Sport and sports tourism are great economic drivers for our city and this will be a much-needed boon for Nelson Mandela Bay,” he said. He referred to the Guinness Pro14 rugby competition, in which the Southern Kings are competing, and said he was looking forward to weekends when both franchises were in action in the city. “What a treat that will be for all our sporting fans.”

Motherwell Utd win Heritage Month Tournament SELBY MADIKANE DESPITE the chilly weather conditions, spectators came in their droves to watch Milan Stars Heritage Month Tournament games, which were won by Motherwell United soccer teams and netball team at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium B Field on Saturday. The tournament was played only by the hosts and their neighbours United. The Milan Stars senior team had a shaky start and they suffered the consequences of their defence committing needless mistakes in crucial areas. Zukisani Swartbooi registered United’s opening goal in the first half. United kept pursuing their second goal, but their strikers failed to convert their clear-cut chances into goals. The star midfielder, Lehlonolo Williams, created more goalscoring opportunities for United. Swartbooi came up with his second goal which increased United’s lead to 2-0. Williams was rewarded with a spectacular goal that gave United a three goals cushion. United’s midfielder Lelethu Dodo scored their fourth goal. Everybody thought that Stars would not score any goal. Samkelo Hlutywa pulled the trigger that beat United’s goalkeeper. Stars’ central defender Chuma Bangani delivered a longrange shot that decreased Stars deficit to 4-2. Hlutywa scored Stars’ third goal and United won the tournament 4-3. United went home with R500 and a floating trophy, while Stars
received R300. In the junior soccer, the winners received gold medals, while the runnersup settled for silver medals. In the netball, United overcame Milan Stars 13-7. United and Stars received the championship and runners-up trophies respectively. Milan Tournament director David Ngxishe stated that the tournament was a success. Ngxishe said, “Despite the cold weather
conditions, spectators came in large numbers. The teams gave good account of themselves. Our club decided to run this tournament because we want to keep the youth in sport. “On behalf of the club, I would like to thank everybody who supported us during this tournament. “Next year we aim to make this tournament

Highbury FC defeat Lion City on their home turf SELBY MADIKANE BRIDGEMEAD side Highbury FC turned over a new leaf after they defeated Lion City 1-0 in their ABC Motsepe League at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Saturday. Highbury FC registered their winning goal after Mvuyisi Fly Mbonda scored from a set piece in the first five minutes of the first half. City marksman Ludwe Sonjica unleashed a powerful shot, but Highbury FC goalkeeper Sive Gqezengele managed to parry the ball over the goalposts. Mbonda and Nduduzo Mbatha were outstanding at the last line of Highbury defence. The home side kept on knocking on Highbury’s door until the end of the first half. In the second half, the visitors made sure that they would avoid making mistakes. City’s new signee, Mnoneleli Mayeye Zitho, failed to score a goal from a perfect cross that was delivered by their left back, Sinolwethu Pakana. City’s right wing, Luxolo Bibo Tobi, was fouled near Highbury’s goal area, but Zukisani Benni Ngalo’s powerful shot from the set piece was easily collected by Gqezengele. Highbury could have scored their second goal, but their central forward, Jackson Dondolo, scooped the ball over the empty goals following a good play that was produced by Lazola Qengwa down the right flank. Highbury midfielder Andile Mkhize was the most outstanding player, who initiated some good moves in the centre of the field. Some ABC Motsepe League results:

City Lads rip 14 goals past Manchester Babes in Sasol League Coastal Stream SELBY MADIKANE FANS saw some of the leading teams delivering huge defeats to the lacklustre sides during the Sasol League Ladies Coastal Stream games that were played on Saturday.

The Nelson Mandela Bay soccer maestros City Lads did not show any mercy to the Uitenhage side Manchester Babes after they thwarted them 14-1 during their game that was played at their slaughterhouse, the New Brighton Oval Stadium on Saturday. Since the beginning of the season, Lads have drubbed all the so-called small teams. Birmingham City delivered a 3-0 defeat to the University of Fort Hare at Duncan Village in East London.
Golden Stars were held to a 2-2 draw by Sophakama FC in their enterprising clash that took place at PE College Dower Campus Fields. The KwaZakhele side, Continental Express FC, failed to honour their away game against Thunderbirds, which was going to be played at Walter Sisulu Ibika Campus in Butterworth. Therefore, Thunderbirds were then awarded soft points by the match officials. However, Express have a torrid time in the Sasol League season this time around. TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE
Vettel in mustwin situation for Ferrari at Malaysian GP TO finish first, first you must finish. These are likely the words that have been rolling around Sebastian Vettel’s mind following the start-line crash in Singapore, which now has him at a 28-point deficit to Lewis Hamilton. There’s little doubt that this weekend’s Malaysian Grand Prix is vital for Ferrari’s and Vettel’s championship aspirations. The Formula 1 paddock travels little more than 300km to Sepang, just outside the city centre of Kuala Lumpur, in Malaysia for this weekend’s 15th round of the 2017 season. The Malaysian circuit, famed for its hot and humid conditions, has been on the F1 calendar since 1999 and is making its final appearance this year. As, arguably, Herman Tilke’s most-liked circuit design, the Sepang International circuit, is one of the most technically challenging of the season. Its combination of medium- and highspeed corners and the ever-present long back and start/finish straits means that somewhere drivers and teams will have to compromise on the car set-up. Some in the paddock will have you be-
lieve that the Mercedes will stroll to victory this weekend given that the Malaysian circuit suits the Silver Arrow to a tee. While the strengths of the Mercedes are likely to be highlighted, Ferrari should not be underestimated. Kimi Raikkonen believes that Ferrari can be in the mix for victory this weekend. “You (the media) assume that it’s difficult. We don’t,” said Raikkonen. “We go there (to Malaysia), it’s another race, another weekend, and we go there full of fight and we’ll do our best”. Team principal Maurizio Arrivabene echoed Raikkonen’s sentiments by saying that the battle is not over but has simply become more difficult. While the two main rivals in the 2017 championship dominate the headlines, many ask what are the chances of Red Bull cheekily snatching the prize from both of them. The stats suggest that the Austrian team has indeed made significant progress since the start of the season. And while they’ll be snapping at the heels for the top step of the podium, barring unreliability, crashes, or a sudden and opportune cloudburst, Daniel Ricciardo and Max
PE Oval Track Raceway meeting this Saturday
Verstappen are unlikely to have the raw pace to match Merc and Ferrari. As if to add more intrigue to the mix, Ferrari and Mercedes have chosen different tyre strategies for this weekend too. With the medium, soft, and supersoft compounds available, Mercedes has chosen to focus more on the yellow-walled soft tyre. With five sets available to Hamilton, Mercedes have looked especially strong on the soft tyre on several occasions this season. In contrast, Ferrari has chosen to focus on the supersoft compound by selecting nine sets each for Vettel and Raikkonen with Red Bull taking a similar approach to Ferrari. The weather forecast, never devoid of the threat of a thunderstorm, predicts scorching temperatures for the duration of the weekend, which could swing the advantage to Ferrari and the supersoft compound. There is no doubt whatsoever that Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel must win the Malaysian Grand Prix in order to keep their championship hopes alive. Ferrari has been adamant that they are, categorically, not out of the championship. It’s time now to underscore their bullish belief where it matters most – on track.

The series, which takes place on mostly alternate Sunday mornings throughout the whole of summer, offers something for the whole family with three beach events and four swim events taking place each race morning. The events will start at 9am and wrap up with a kids prize-giving at 10am and an adult prize-giving at 10:20am. For those that prefer staying dry, a 5km beach run or 5km beach walk will be available and those between the ages of one and 12 can partake in the kids 1km beach run/walk. For the swimmers, the series offers a 400m, 1km, 2km and 3km ocean swim. With more than R20 000 in fantastic
lucky draw prizes, each race morning is sure to keep families at the beach longer. The feature lucky draw prize each race day this season is a R1 500 Greenacres shopping voucher, while for the kids 1km beach run/walk prize-giving, there will be a R500 Greenacres shopping voucher up for grabs. Greenacres Shopping Centre have also teamed up with Caltex Eastern Cape to support the Masakhane Future Stars programme, which ensures that up to 100 disadvantaged children are given the opportunity to take part in events like the Ocean Racing Series.
