DARK DAYS FOR SCHOOL: PRINCIPAL REPORTED MATTER A YEAR AGO

FTER months of trying in vain to get the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s (NMBM) attention, the staff members of the Haas Das Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre in Algoa Park are starting to doubt
that the broken streetlights in the area will ever be fixed. According to Haas Das ECD principal Dolly Nel, the streetlights in Kamdebo Street (where the school is located) and Ysterhout Street have not been working since last year.
“We have reached our wits’ end reaching out to the local municipality and executive mayor’s office for assistance regarding the fact that our school, Haas Das ECD and the surrounding area is in total darkness due to the streetlights not working since 2016,” said Nel. “This is a long stretch of road
with loads of foot traffic.” Several attempts to report the situation on the number provided by the NMBM specifically for power failures and streetlight faults proved unsuccessful. Nel claims that she did not even receive a reference number. After two of her employees were
robbed at knifepoint, Nel attempted to contact Executive Mayor Athol Trollip directly on April 22 and received a response from his personal assistant to inform her that the matter was directed to the Rapid Response Task Team co-ordinator.

Charlo learners collect teddies for little cancer patients Learners from Charlo Primary School recently had a drive in which they collected preloved soft toys for children who undergo cancer treatment at the Provincial Hospital. With this drive, the school raised awareness among its learners about the importance of making a difference in the lives of children with very trying circumstances. SASSA asks beneficiaries not to panic about card expiry date REPORTER THE South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) continues to receive queries about the expiry date of its payment cards and the implications thereof from beneficiaries of social grants. The expiry date reflected on the current SASSA card is December this year. SASSA said in a recent media statement that it wishes to put it on record that no beneficiary of social grants will be affected by this expiry date. According to the media statement, SASSA is in a planning phase regarding the future payment of social grants once the contract with the current service provider, Cash Paymaster Services (CPS), comes to an end in March next year. As soon as final plans are in place, beneficiaries will be informed about the updating
process later on in the year. “SASSA remains committed to providing uninterrupted service to beneficiaries of social grants in moving South Africa forward. “All social grant recipients are warned not to heed the call by anyone to change their cards,” the statement read. The SASSA card bearing the colours of the South African flag remains the official card and cannot be changed for any other card. Beneficiaries should be aware of hoax information being circulated, which requires them to disclose their personal and card details. SASSA does not offer financial products such as loans and discourages beneficiaries from using their cards to acquire such services. If beneficiaries are unsure about anything they hear from the media or fake SMS
messages doing rounds, they can contact the SASSA customer care line on 080 060 1011. In another development, SASSA welcomed the appointment of a panel of experts by the Constitutional Court. These experts will, among other things, assist with monitoring the process leading to phasing out CPS and beyond, as directed by the court in The Black Sash Trust vs Minister of Social Development and others. In terms of the order of the court, the panel consists of Angela Bester, Anthony Felet, Werner Krull, Gill Marcus, Tim Masela, Mmamolatelo Mathekga, Mavuso Msimang, Brand Taute, Doris Tshepe and Heinz Weilert. SASSA said in the media statement that it will give the panel all the required support to ensure that the process becomes a success and that grant beneficiaries are protected.

Crèche in dark over lights Continued from page 1 “The only reason I went this route (contacting the mayor directly) was because the numbers we were given to phone were not answered,” Nel said. By May 15, the matter had not yet been resolved and Nel again contacted the mayor’s personal assistant. The matter was brought to the attention of several individuals, including Lesley Dunderdale, executive secretary to NMBM acting executive director: electricity and energy, Peter Neilson. Dunderdale made a request on June 8 to an electricity call centre to liaise directly with Nel to ascertain whether the faulty streetlights have been captured on the faults system for repair. Since then, Nel has received no correspondence on the matter which remains unresolved.
The Haas Das ECD Centre employs 23 people and caters for 226 children from the local community. Nel said there were open fields located near the school, which residents use as illegal dumping sites and which provide cover for dangerous individuals. “The safety of my pupils, staff and parents is a priority,” she said. “Our facility has been vandalised and burgled 12 times, the school vehicle was stolen from a locked garage and four staff members have been robbed in front of our building during this period. The SAPS is aware of more crimes happening in this area around us.” The school has had to replace their lights, windows and various other fixtures numerous times after they were stolen or broken. “With winter adding to the darkness factor, we have not been able to host a parent
evening or fundraiser after hours due to the lack of safety. “We really have been patient, but safety concerns are relevant. “I have staff and children that have to walk to the premises in the early hours and sometimes we leave late due to parents arriving late. The dangerous dark roads around us offer these people no comfort. “We feel that we have the right to expect streetlights to be in working order, not only for our safety, but for the community as a whole,” Nel said. Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki said, “The municipality is experiencing incidents of vandalism to streetlights and some of the municipal infrastructure. This is leading to a backlog of maintenance and repair work. “We are working around the clock to reach all the affected areas. Streetlighting is a key element of safety.”

Bethelsdorp patrollers receive crimefighting equipment REPORTER THE community of Bethelsdorp has committed to work with the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the fight against crime in the area and their partnership received a necessary boost when local businesses came on board to support the initiative financially. This gesture followed after police were on the trail of a suspect during a tracing operation in Bethelsdorp. A police officer and other members took notice of the good job the patrollers were doing in assisting the fight against crime by patrolling in the area, despite the fact that they lacked even the essential tools required for the job. The lack of necessary resources hampered their work in many ways. Some of their challenges include the poor lighting in the area, not being able to be identified as a patroller, and communication tools. Therefore, the detective commander worked hand-in-hand with the Community Police Forum (CPF) at the station and identified the needs, including reflective jackets, torches, whistles, lanyards and caps. There was an immediate and overwhelming response from various businesses who came to the assistance of the patrollers. On June 22, the items were handed over to

Bethelsdorp SAPS expressed their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the sponsors who opened their hearts to support the initiative.
The SAPS also emphasised the importance of getting the community to work with the CPF and the police. “Together we can ensure that community members feel safe at all times,” said Mount Road Cluster Commander Major General Funeka Siganga.

Raymond Uren memorial lecture tomorrow REPORTER THE Northern Areas People Development Initiative (NAPDI) will present the Second Annual Raymond Uren Memorial tomorrow in the Main Hall of the Gelvandale Sport Grounds. The keynote speech will be delivered by wellknown University of Johannesburg academic, author and long-time community activist, Dr Ashwin Desai. This event is jointly organised by Napdi as well as NMMU’s Centre for the Advancement of Non Racialism and Democracy (Canrad). NAPDI trustee Michael Barry said Desai’s
topic “Decolonising the Curriculum, Liberating the Imagination: A Provocation” will hopefully give impetus to the current debate around revisiting the content of programmes offered by most of our higher education institutions. “The sporting fraternity is also looking forward to Desai sharing his thoughts on transformation in sport,” Barry said. The lecture is open to the public and community members are urged to contact the NAPDI office on 041 457 1422 to secure the last remaining seats. Proceedings start at 6pm. The NAPDI trustees will work closely with the Gelvandale Community Policing Forum to ensure that the parking area is secure.

ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL HE runs to and from work every day, trains during his lunch hour, but still it is not enough for Simon Matebese. The 19km to and from his home in Soweto-on-Sea to his work in Central is a cup of tea for this avid athlete, who recently completed his second Comrades Marathon and is already preparing to take on the gruelling Washie marathon – a 161km run from Port Alfred to East London – next year. Matebese (54), who is a cleaner at a furniture factory, completed this year’s Comrades Marathon in only 9 hours, 19 minutes and 57 seconds. His first Comrades was in 2008. His enthusiasm overshadows the fact that Matebese has had many hardships on his 12-year journey in this sport. In 2009 Matebese ran the Washie without any support, food or drink. “The first I heard of Simon running the race was when he called me from Port Alfred to say he had no taxi fare to return to PE. That’s when I found out he had travelled alone and
PHOTO:ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL
ran the race without anyone being there to assist him along the route,” said Melvin Humpel, his manager at the furniture factory where he is employed. “Being there by himself meant that there was no one to give him refreshments while he was running the race. “He also had to ask a stranger to keep his bag with his personal belongings because he could not run with it. “A good Samaritan gave him an energy drink and a banana along the way and that’s what he finished the race on. That is amazing.” In that same year Matebese also completed a 100km race and finished in fourth place – also without any assistance. This year, for the Comrades he had the support of his employer who donated his running shoes and paid for his travelling expenses. “Where the average athlete runs only a few times before throwing their running shoes away, Simon will run up to 8 000km with a pair until those running shoes are completely worn out. He also cannot afford the luxuries of a healthy eating plan and
supplements. “Yet nothing stands in his way and he remains humble. The trophies and medals don’t really mean anything to him. He runs for the love of it.” The company will assist Matebese with the next Washie and also the Two Oceans marathon in Cape Town. Matebese, who is not a man of many words, is very grateful for the support of his co-workers. “I used to run alone, but my employers encouraged me to join a running club and now I am enjoying the support I receive being in this club.” Matebese who describes himself as a sports fanatic, also used to do judo, karate and boxing. “I love sport and the opportunities it has given me. I want to encourage the youth to focus on sporting activities. “If you do sport, it will not only make you healthy and fit, but it will keep you from drugs and crime. Sport will teach you discipline and help you stay on the right track.” Simon added that besides his coworkers, his wife of 27 years and two children are his biggest supporters.

THE Giving Gifts to Newborn Babies, an organisation committed to ease the daunt of financially struggling mothers to newborn babies, has initiated a programme aimed at donating baby hampers to impoverished communities of Nelson Mandela Bay. The hampers, which include baby products, are donated to maternity wards at state hospitals. “We equally divide 200 gift packs to seven different units monthly. The hampers are made up of basic items such as clothes, nappies and toiletries,” Desiré Goodwin, founder of Giving Gifts to Newborn Babies, explained. One of the recent beneficiaries was Yoliswa Faku, a security guard at the Uitenhage Hospital, who unexpectedly gave birth to triplets. According to Duwayne Putter, communications manager of Giving Gifts to Newborn Babies, Faku thought she was having twins, but was pleasantly surprised by the birth of three little girls. “She was prepared for two babies, not three, so we decided to take three beautiful hampers for her and her triplets to assist,” Putter said. Goodwin explained that the ; Giving Gifts to Newborn Babies recently handed over three baby hampers to Yoliswa Faku, who gave birth to triplets at the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital. project operates exclusively on donations, most of which come from their 24 000 Facebook followers. “Lack of funding is one of our biggest challenges. We often struggle to raise enough money for fuel which is critical for the distribution of these hampers to the hospitals,” Goodwin said. “We are pleading to the public to support us with our fundraising activities and any form of donation is welcome.” The group also helps other non-profit organisations (NPOs) such as the Come Learn Educational and Youth Development Centre in Walmer Township. For more info call Duwayne Putter on 079 080 9411.

Lifeline for maths and science students THANDI SETOKOE THE chronic underperformance of high school learners in Mathematics and Science is envisaged to be a thing of the past thanks to the newly established Kwakhanya Mathematics and Sciences Centre in Motherwell. The project, founded by education enthusiast Masixole Swartbooi opened its door on June 3 this year, with the offer of extra classes to grade eight and nine learners. “Initially I started tutoring Mathematics in 2012, but back then I used to work from home. “After realising that many young people had a love for the subject but were struggling with it, I decided to approach schools so as to get a centre where I could then start formal extra classes,” explained Swartbooi. He added that the project focused mainly on grade eight and nine learners purely because it will allow for an early arrest of the problem and militate against the often hurried approach normally used in schools. “Extra classes are always offered to matric learners and the lower grades are often neglected.”
OMBUDSMAN We invite readers to comment about the paper’s contents, and we shall correct errors as soon as possible. Please send comments to the editor at elizabethg@media24.com, or phone 041 503 6057. Errors in the contents can be reported to Media24’s Community Press ombudsman, George Claassen, at george.claassen@media24.com, or phone 021 8513232, or 0835432471
Despite receiving many rejections from the schools approached, Swartbooi’s proposal was finally approved this year. With more than 50 learners now enrolled at the centre, classes take place on Saturday mornings at Vulumzi High School. These classes are conducted by two veteran teachers, with an accumulated 50 years’ experience in the disciplines of Mathematics and Science. According to educator Joyce Msutwana, recognising the common issues that lead to failure in these subjects can help prevent it from happening. “Proper steps need to be taken to mitigate the problem.” Msutwana explained that some of the major reasons for pupils failing these subjects is the failure to seek help when needed and the scarcity of teachers. “Teachers ought to identify struggling learners and employ intervention strategies such as requiring learners to attend review sessions or calling parents,” said Msutwana. Swartbooi concluded that they wish to expand the project throughout the district with the intention of improving the province’s pass rate in the future.

Taekwondo students show off their skills REPORTER THE Phoenix Taekwon-Do club successfully hosted the first annual Korean Martial Arts (KMA) Provincial Tournament in Port Elizabeth recently. Clubs travelled from as far as Aliwal North and Mthatha to participate in the tournament and show off their self-defence skills. A total of 73 gold medals, 49 silver medals and 32 bronze medals were handed to students who participated in the various categories and divisions. The event proved that taekwondo is a sport for both young and old as the students’ ages ranged from 6 to 42. It also turned out to be a family sport considering the many parents who signed up for the tournament along with their children. Following the success of the tournament, a group of 10 students, junior and senior, were selected to represent the Phoenix Taekwon-Do club and the Eastern Cape at the upcoming KMA Nationals that will take place in Potchefstroom from August 4 to 6. The group consists of Chadre Frank, Cleyvon Frank, Rochelle de Beer, Benjamin Miller, Sibonelo Mdontsane, Kalinka Vermaak, JD Claassen, Desiree Booysen, Arne de Wet and Keenan Nel. The students who qualify at the nationals will then proceed to the SAITF Nationals, set to take place in Cape Town in September, where they will be awarded their provincial colours.

PE to host first collectors’ fair
Wire F/Galv 4mm 50kg
PASSIONATE collectors of all persuasions will have the chance to discover sought-after items to add to their treasures when Port Elizabeth’s first vintage, retro, geek, collectibles, cosplay and hobbies fair takes place at Walmer Park Shopping Centre on July 21 and 22. The annual event has been named (con)fuze and promises to fuse an eclectic mix of intertwined interests, designed to attract young and old. According to organisers Elsje Smuts and Craig Pannell, the time is right for the Bay to host such an inclusive and comprehensive event. “The age of the collector is most certainly upon us,” said Pannell. “Gone are the days of fringe subcultures being only for the collector or the hobbyist or the geek – these different subcultures are now more widespread than ever and have become, in a real sense, mainstream.” He said PE has hosted successful hobbies fairs and toy shows in the past, but the last one happened more than a decade ago. “While PE is home to some very good antique and vintage
shops, it has never hosted a comprehensive retro or collectibles fair,” he said. Pannell said the interest in the event from the Bay’s thousands of collectors, hobbyists, geeks and cosplayers has been significant so far. “The aim of (con)fuze is to create an authentic platform for young and old to share in these vastly different yet connected experiences and interests.” Smuts said there will be national exhibitors as well, including steampunk designer Lynette Penny, Johannesburgbased graphic artist Mel Dixon and Cape Town cosplayers Anzel Schutz and Genevieve Lesch. “This event is all-encompassing. We have displays of the more ‘traditional’ collections, such as vintage cars, rugs, stamps and antique jewellery, and we also have modern and vintage TV games and comics, handmade geek jewellery, cosplay, and comic and graphic art.” She said collectibles on display would include coins and medals, books and photographs, as well as Star Wars, Coca-Cola, and garage-related memorabilia. For more info contact Smuts on 082 873 7663.

Hundreds of EC learners to improve math skills at camps REPORTER A TOTAL of 800 learners from the Eastern Cape who have shown a particular aptitude for mathematics have been chosen to form part of provincial development camps hosted by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) during the winter holiday. SAICA awarded these 800 Eastern Cape learners, along with 2 200 other matrics from around the country, the opportunity to develop their mathematical skills as a way to address the quality of South Africa’s education system. More than 3 000 learners are expected to participate in this year’s camps. The Eastern Cape development camps will take place in Nelson Mandela Bay at the Sumcay Camping Centre from June 28 to July 7 and in Mthatha at Walter Sisulu University from July 13 to July 22. SAICA sees itself as a key stakeholder of the country – one with a vested interest in improving the quality of education, especially in mathematics. It has turned this strategic priority into action. For the past 15 years SAICA has been offering academically talented, yet financially disadvantaged, Grade 12 learners additional academic support over the winter school holidays through its provincially run SAICA development camps. Each camp lasts five to seven days and provides learners with extra lessons to improve their mathematics, science, accounting and English aptitude. Learners are also offered life skills training and career information to help them make wise and appropriate career choices. SAICA senior executive: transformation and growth Gugu Makhanya explained, “When it comes to scarce skill
professions like medicine, engineering, actuarial science and chartered accountancy, the pool of learners who are academically talented enough to apply is small. “The percentage of those learners who are black or coloured is even smaller. It is, therefore, essential that SAICA does what it can to assist and to grow the pipeline of the disadvantaged learners who wish to study towards a career in chartered accountancy. “Collaborating with key partners in the provincial departments of education, members of the accounting profession, representatives from universities and institutions such as the Financial Services Board, as well as various other professions, SAICA’s aim is to help improve learner proficiency in subjects like mathematics and science in order, ultimately, to improve the quality of passes that high school learners achieve in these subjects. “We also find that, due to the mock exams in which learners participate at the camps, they are better prepared for their final matric exams later in the year.” This, Makhanya said, is evident when analysing the matric results of past camp attendees. SAICA’s records reveal that camp attendees are often at the top of the matric results list at the end of the year. For example, in 2016, Mpumalanga development camp attendee Busisiwe Sibiya achieved six distinctions in her final matric exams. Sbongiseni Zondi, who attended the KwaZulu-Natal camp, scored three distinctions and achieved full marks for accounting. “We expect similar results from the leaners who will be attending this year’s camps,” said Makhanya.

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 28 JUNE 2017
NICRO aims to make the country a safer place ANIKA DE BEER THE National Institute for Crime Prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders (NICRO) has proven to be one of South Africa’s unsung heroes over the last 106 years. Founded in 1910 as the South African Prisoners’ Aid Association (SPAA), the non-governmental organisation (NGO) aims to provide assistance and support services to prisoners and their families. Today, the organisation operates on a national level and provides a wide variety of services and programmes to those in need. NICRO operates on four main service streams, namely crime prevention, diversion, offender reintegration and non-custodial sentencing. The biggest of the four is diversion, where NICRO attempts to channel people away from crime. People who have committed offences like theft or assault and who take responsibility for their actions are referred to NICRO where they are assessed to see which programme would suit their needs best. “Some of the interventions that we do are individual counselling and a restorative justice programme where domestic offence takes place. For example, we normally try to bring the families in to sort it out. If it is between two people, we have something called victim offender mediation,” said Kubashinie Coopasamy, supervisor at NICRO in PE. Once the client has completed the programme, social workers write a report and recommend the case be closed. “The nice thing about diversion is there is no criminal record after that,” Coopasamy said. NICRO also offers adult life skills programmes, substance abuse programmes, anger management and ROPP, which assists people who have been arrested for driving under the influence. The second stream, non-custodial sentencing, is aimed at individuals with a criminal record
for more serious offences like robbery. “The court might see that this person has been robbing all his life because he’s addicted to drugs and has never been helped before. The client will be sent to a social worker who will then do a thorough assessment to see that there is actually a need in the client’s life and that’s why he’s committing these offences,” Coopasamy explained. “The social worker will motivate the court to say that rather than incarcerating the client, they let him serve his sentence outside prison by means of maybe attending a rehabilitation programme. The social worker normally monitors his progress and gives feedback to the court.” Offender reintegration is where NICRO helps prisoners who have been granted parole to reenter society. “The social worker or psychologist will refer the clients they deem suitable for our programmes to us. “We basically equip these clients to have skills when they get out of prison. Sometimes they are there for 16 or 17 years and they don’t know what is going on in the outside world. They don’t know how to deal with their friends or families,” Coopasamy said. NICRO aims to make an impact in the community as a whole by also hosting a camp during the school holidays called Journey for learners who are high-risk in terms of criminal behaviour, as well as the Safety Ambassador’s programme, which is a leadership workshop for learners in Grade 10 to 12 from disadvantaged schools. The NGO is currently struggling to keep itself afloat financially and, therefore, have a business side as well where clients, who are employed, pay a small fee for their respective programmes. For example, employed clients in the ROPP programme would pay a total of R100 for the entire programme. The 10 staff members of the Port Elizabeth office are currently trying to raise funds for stationery and a reliable vehicle. For more info call NICRO PE on 041 582 2555.

REPORTER THE Community Chest and their Winter Woolly Drive partner, Caltex Eastern Cape Marketer (CECM), visited Seeds of Love Educare in Walmer Township after the day care centre and surrounding informal housing were severely damaged in a fire on June 8. “It was devastating to see what was left of a place that used to bring joy and happiness to many little ones,” said Community Chest EC PRO, Colette Theron. “We received our first box filled with warm items from Sunflower Montessori for our Winter Woolly Drive, which was donated to Seeds of Love Educare. It is wonderful to know that this project can bring back smiles to many people affected in cases like this.” CECM CEO Clive Berlyn added, “It is a privilege to partner with the Community Chest – their commitment and continual efforts to assist the many communities in need is absolutely commendable. For us it is more than just being one of the top fuel providers
in the Eastern Cape, but also about forming meaningful relationships with organisations that make a real difference in the lives of others.” The Community Chest issued an urgent appeal to the public to continue donating warm items and blankets to assist those affected by the recent fires. The Winter Woolly Drive will run until the end of the winter season to continue assisting those in need. There will be another intersection collection on Friday. Be on the lookout for Community Chest volunteers, the CECM team, Atlas Security teams and members from Round Table PE West 142 who will take on the challenge during the cold morning hours from 6am to 8am at the following intersections: William Moffett/Cape Road, M4/Walmer Boulevard and Stanford Road/Aubrey Street. Alternatively, all Winter Woolly Drive donations can be dropped off at participating Caltex Service Stations. For more info contact the Community Chest offices on 041 582 1592.

Madibaz netball players off to World Youth Champs REPORTER MADIBAZ netball stalwarts Melodine Jacobs and Nolusindiso Twani have been selected to represent the South African u/21 team at the World Youth Netball Championships in Gaborone, Botswana, next month. It is the second time that Jacobs has received the nod from the national selectors after representing the Baby Proteas at the Africa Netball World Youth Cup Qualifiers in Botswana last year. “Last year was really exciting for me. I learnt a lot and I could really see an improvement in my netball. “I’ve never played at such a high level, so it was really a big thing,” said the 20year-old first-year business studies student, who admitted her selection came as a shock after being out of action with an injury since March. “I haven’t been doing any running or fitness work, so, basically, I have three weeks to start working on my form.” Jacobs, a Port Elizabeth local, said she would take part in several league matches for the SPAR NMMU Madibaz during this time which would “help me build my strength”. Always willing to learn and improve her
game, she said her time with the South African team last year was a great experience. “While I’m slightly nervous about my selection, I’m excited because I’ve been there before and I now know what to do.” Twani, her 21-year-old varsity teammate, was overwhelmed at the news, but excited to make her debut at international level. “I was very emotional,” said the thirdyear sports management student. “It’s just such an honour.” Having been named in the provisional squad last August, she said her selection had been unexpected. “It’s the third time that I have been selected for the squad, but I’ve never made the final team,” she said. Twani attended training camps in preparation for July and said she had noticed a marked improvement in her game as well as mentally. She said the two-week camp had been a gruelling affair designed to give the team an idea of what to expect at the championships and admitted she was “hugely excited, but nervous at the same time”. The Proteas will be up against 19 other teams and have been drawn in Pool B along with Australia, Barbados, Zimbabwe and Singapore.

TOP Madibaz swimmer Alaric Basson is immersing himself in more ways than one in his preparation for the Summer Universiade which will take place in Taipei, Taiwan, in August. The 21-year-old, who was named NMMU’s sportsman of the year last year, has been on a mission to improve his times in a sport where every split second counts. “I have been working on a number of aspects to get faster and to become more efficient in the pool,” said Basson, who notched up silver medals in the 100m and 200m breaststroke events at the national champs in Durban in April. “I have been focusing on my starts and turns and have been working on techniques to minimise drag. “My coach and I have also been looking at ways to make my stroke more efficient.” The Uitenhage-based student said he had also been hitting the gym to work on his core strength ahead of the Summer Universiade, also known as the World Student Games. “Now that I’m done with my exams, I’m able to be more consistent with regard to my gym work as well as putting in more yards in the pool.” Although he admitted to a penchant for pizza and chicken wings, he said he had not changed his diet
much apart from cutting down on junk food in an effort to keep his energy levels more constant. He is hoping that his attention to detail will convert into notable performances against his peers. “My goals are to improve on my personal best times. I haven’t seen what the competition is like yet, but, based on the 2015 games, it will definitely be tough.” Basson, who set personal best times in finishing second to Cameron van der Burgh (100m) and Daniel Swanepoel (200m) at the nationals, said the Summer Universiade levelled the playing field somewhat in the sense that, as students, everyone’s focus was divided. Reflecting on his journey until now, the third-year building student said he started his love affair with the sport at a very early age. “I think I was about seven or eight years old,” he said. He said the rivalry between him and his twin brother, Alard, an accomplished butterfly swimmer, helped them both. “We are very competitive in everything we do, but we understand that it helps both of us in the end. Our goal is not to beat each other, but to try and be the best we can be.” Beyond Taipei, the Madibaz star is eyeing the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, in 2020. “It is the dream and the goal, but I have a lot more work to put in before then. It’s all about the improvement.”

SPAR KIRKWOOD WILDSFEES:
The mermaid, Aquata, will be at the Faerie For All Seasons themed wonder land at the SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees.
Four seasons of fun for kids at the Wildsfees REPORTER

THIS year the SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees, which takes place this weekend, will embrace the imaginations of children as they enjoy fun-filled experiences on the wild side. A highlight for many will be bouncing on beds – without anyone shouting at you. Parents can let their kids go wild as they enjoy some bed-bouncing fun thanks to the Bed Centre, which is inviting children to bounce on one of their beds. “The festival is one of a few in South Africa to host a ‘festival within a festival’ for the young, and this year we have decided to celebrate our 16th festival by getting kids to embrace their wild with a variety of activities,” says festival director Jenni Honsbein. Special attractions for the young and young at heart include our Faeries for all Seasonsthemed wonderland, Little Pony rides, Squillos kids play care zone, pedal go-karts, paintball, and a chance to meet and greet cartoon kids characters such as Paw Patrol’s Marshall and Skye, Squillos, Barney and friends, Hello Kitty, Minnie and Mickey Mouse and Lollos and Lettie. For a once in a life time adventure kids can take a walk through an antique cupboard to the Faerie For All Seasons-themed wonderland. There they will be met by spring faerie Maia in her giant nest, then journey over the rainbow to summer with the SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees mermaid Aquata, continue the adventure through fields of bright flowers and across a bridge where Rhea the autumn faerie
awaits, ending at the magic waterfall with the winter Snow Queen Snowdina in her castle. Little Pony rides will take place all weekend long for R20 per person per ride. Children need to weigh 60kg or less to ride the ponies, Tonto and Pixi. The ponies will be taken off the ground before the entertainment starts so they don’t get stressed out. The Kidz play care zone is the next stop for children to go wild on a special soft play circuit. Bright colours and inviting shapes are guaranteed to give hours of fun while the rest of the family embraces their wild. Parents will be able to leave their children for supervised play provided they have identification. “At this year’s festival we want parents to be able to enjoy themselves while the children are kept entertained and safe,” says Honsbein. The first two hours will be free between 9am and 5pm. Thereafter, it will cost R20 per hour per child. After 5pm the cost will be R25 per hour per child. This service is available on: Friday 9am to 10pm, Saturday 9am to 10pm and Sunday 9am to 3pm. #Wildsfees2017 will be taking place from Friday until Sunday. Gates will open from 9am and festinos can party late into the night. Tickets are available from the SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees office on 042 230 0064 or go to www.wildsfees.co.za for more information.

PE to host 19th SA National Quilt Festival REPORTER FOR the first time since 2006, Port Elizabeth will play host to the South African National Quilt Festival which will take place next month. The Dias Quilters’ Guild will host the We Create National Quilt Festival, an eagerly awaited event that attracts delegates from all over South Africa and abroad. The highlight of the festival is the exhibition of stunning hand- and machine made competition quilts created by the top quilters and textile artists in South Africa. A wide variety of quilt and textile related
workshops will run throughout the week, as well as lunch hour lectures. Many quilt shops from around South Africa and major sewing machine companies will be trading at the festival, offering a great shopping experience. For the first time ever in South Africa two men will be representing the world-renowned Tentmakers of Cairo, Egypt, on the teaching panel. They will pass on a time-honoured tradition that has been passed from father to son over generations. Their magnificent applique quilts will also be on display in their own exhibition. Jenny Bowker, a high-profile Australian quilt teacher who noticed the men’s work and intro-
duced them to the worldwide quilt shows, will teach two workshops and present a lecture on the Tentmakers of Cairo. Adding to the excitement, the Keiskamma Project and 67 Blankets for Mandela will also feature at the event. The 19th South African National Quilt Festival will take place from July 3 to 8 at the Collegiate Girls’ High School in Parsons Hill. Open times from July 3 to 7 are from 9am to 6pm and from 9am to 3pm on July 8. Entry to the festival is R50 per adult, R20 for learners and free to children under the age of 12. Out of town athletes dominate annual Champions’ Run REPORTER ATHLETES from out of town once again called the shots in the third annual Nelson Mandela Bay South African Half Marathon Champions’ Run in the city on Saturday, June 24. Run in near-perfect weather conditions, Olympians Stephen Mokoka and former local athlete, Elroy Gelant took the race by the scruff of its neck and led from start to finish. Mokoka won the race in a time of 1:01:21 with Gelant second in 1:01:30. The winning time by Mokoka was only slightly slower than the 1:01:16 set by last year’s winner, Kenyan Edwin Koech. Nonetheless, Mokoka pocketed the winner’s purse of R50 000 for his hour’s work. Local runners Melikhaya Frans (4th), Mariano Eesou (18th) and Ntombesintu Mfunzi (10th) finished in the top 20 in their respective categories. Urged on by hundreds of spectators who
lined the course, road running star Frans stayed in touch with Mokoka and Gelant right up to the final kilometre when the pair pulled away. Not long afterwards, a lapse in concentration cost Frans third place. Frans won the R8 000 prize for being the first EPA male athlete home, in addition to the overall fourth prize of R15 000. The day was not without drama when the winner in the women’s race Ethiopian, Genet Abdurkadi Genet and runner-up Elisabet Arsedo were disqualified for not wearing two numbers during the race. The winner’s prize was awarded to Cornelia Joubert from Central Gauteng Athletics, who initially finished third in 1:12:31. This resulted in Ntombesintu Mfunzi who finished 12th moving to 10th place. Local runner, Mfunzi, who won R3 000 for 10th place also collected the R8 000 prize for the first EPA female. To complete her rich picking she also received R4 000 for finishing first in the 35- to 39-year-old women’s category.

Both the EPA teams anchored by Frans and Mfunzi finished fourth in the men’s and women’s team competition. The biggest winner of the day was Vuyokazi Gebe from Bizana in the former Transkei. The 26-year-old, electrical engineering student won a brandnew Datson Go car sponsored by the Eastern Cape Motor Group valued at R106 900 in a lucky draw open to participants in both the half marathon and 5km fun run. The Eastern Cape Motor Group is set to sponsor the event for the next two years. Richard Geyer, a teacher from Westering who ran from Port Elizabeth to Durban and then completed the Comrades Marathon to raise funds for cancer, received R5 545 for his cancer fundraiser Bob1000 drive, which was the official beneficiary for the 5km fun run. Helenvale Primary won the competition for the school with the most bulk entries, with 109 entrants and received sports equipment valued at R10 000. Other school winners were: Fontein R8 000, Gertrude Shope R6 000, Enqileni R4 000 and Alpha Primary R2 000. They also won sports equipment. STUDY METHODS STUDIE-METODES
The Tina Cowley one day study method course is for children from grade 5 - 12 and teaches children how to study effectively. We work on learning through association, how to remember what we have learnt, how to plan ahead and how to answer exam papers. Because each child is unique we do the Neethling brain profile, which is taken into consideration when we teach the different study techniques. It also assists parents and teachers in understanding the child better. Please contact us for more information and bookings

CHITONOMBE My name is Nokuthula Yilo from Port Elizabeth, I am 40 years old, I have approached many traditional doctors wasting a lot of money and time with no results, that is until I went to Dr. Chitonombe. He explained to me that there were many different ways of finding success. So I went ahead and chose the short boys. I followed all his instructions and I was suprised to see bundles of money. I have bever seein so much money in my life, I then counted out his 10% to thank him for his job well done. I am Rhoda from Njoli, I am 49 years old. I have been working for most of my life, and it feels like my life is not going anywhere. I then tried seeking help from different doctors - not even that worked for me until I met Dr. Chitonombe. I then contacted him, counted the money and thanked him with 10% for his job well done. I now own a business; I and my family are now happy. I even contacted him for help with my business nothing is impossible for Dr. Chitonombe; he is the real solution to your problems be it financial, love, domestic or business. Jakavula helps Kubo beat Strikers United SELBY MADIKANE YOUNG Brothers’ midfielder Siyasanga Jakavula helped his side beat Strikers United 1-0 in their Zwide Football Association (ZWIFA) Ntando Tours and Transport Premier League enterprising game that was played at Gal City Ground on Sunday. Strikers failed on numerous occasions to convert their glorious opportunities into goals in the first half. Everyone who watched the game between the two sides thought that Strikers would be the winners for they had more ball possession than Brothers, who are affectionate-

ly known as Kubo. The Soweto lads kept on missing their chances until the first half ended. Kubo goalkeeper Thamsanqa Office was at the top of his game. ZWIFA Mayoral Cup winners, Brothers, were fired up in the second half. Strikers’ goalkeeper Lubabalo Ngqezana was kept busy by Kubo players throughout the entire second half of the game. Brothers finally made their chance count after Jakavula scored a fortuitous goal from a goal-line scramble. Jakavula could have come up with his second goal, but Strikers’ goalkeeper Ngqezana managed to fingertip the midfielder’s effort out

Spurs defeat MOFA log leaders Royal Bucks SELBY MADIKANE HIGHLAND Spurs overcame Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Premier League log leaders Royal Bucks 1-0 at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday. The game was evenly balanced. As a result, it was not easy to predict the winner between the two outfits. Most of the time fans saw more action in the centre of the field. The two sides went to the half time break with the score at a stalemate. The tempo of game changed rapidly in the second half with both sides pursuing the opening goal. The goalkeepers of the two sides were kept busy, but they showed their class when they were tested by the forwards. MOFA Build It Premier League reigning champions Spurs finally registered their winning goal thanks to Shoes Kiviet, who guided his side to a last minute 1-0 win. Spurs’ goal came in the nick of the time as the game ended after Kiviet scored. In another game, Young Romans claimed a hard earned 1-0
win from Tomorrow Stars. Siyanda Doctor Sali scored a top-notch goal that sent Romans’ supporters into a frenzy, despite the fact that Romans should have scored more goals but wasted opportunities. Meanwhile, FC Angels came from 1-0 down and managed to secure a well-deserved 2-1 triumph over Milan Stars.

HUNDREDS of supporters were kept on their feet when Walmer Football Association (WAFA) Premier League hosted a series of spectacular games at Walmer Community Grounds at the weekend. Peace United shared a 2-2 draw
with Morning Stars, while Real Madrid defeated Airport Valley United 2-0. Golden Heroes’ side battled to a hard-fought 1-0 win from Walmer Hotspurs. Young Aces were awarded soft points over Brazil United who failed to pitch up for the game. Mabayibone Strikers cruised to a well-deserved 2-0 win over Air-
AFTER two successive draws in the Port Elizabeth Legends Football Association (PELFA) Old Buck Legends League, Westpark finally registered their first win against NMBM. NMBM was at the receiving end of the 1-0 win of Westpark. It was a very evenly contested game with many shots at goals. Westpark’s Mike Frosler eventually scored a goal some five minutes before the final whistle in the good spirited game. In another game, Mahle Old Grey returned to their winning ways when they lowered PE City’s colours 2-1. Tony Danev put City in the lead midway through the first half. Mahle Old Grey’s shots at a goal eventually turned one with Deon Carolus equalising about five minutes from the half time whistle. The half time score was 1-1. The game swung to and fro in the second half and Julius Jogoo netted the winner for Mahle Old Grey nine minutes before the final whistle blew. Callies overwhelmed Priory 8-0 in their one-sided game. Nigel Bailey scored two of Callies’ goals and Karl Pereira scored another to put Callies up 3-0 at half time. The goals flowed in the second half, with Lukhanyo “Jomo” Dlula, Aslam Sydow, Ryan Truelove each adding a goal.
port Valley United. Morning Stars played to a 2-2 draw against Ghetto Stars. Peace United were unmerciful towards Walmer Stars when they overcame them 4-2. Walmer Hotspurs also defeated Manchester United 2-0. Despite their 4-2 loss to Eleven Experience, Young Aces showed character in their game.
That, however, was not the end of the goal spree. Nigel Bailey completed his hat trick and Karl Pereira helped himself to his second brace of the night. Kuyga Masters and Hearts fought their hearts out to a 1-1 draw. In this very fair and competitive game, the teams went to the half time break goalless. Then, Lee Stevenson put Hearts into the lead six minutes into the second half. Kuyga kept on putting pressure on the Hearts’ goals and some 10 minutes later, Enoch Chekure netted the equaliser. Shamrocks once again reigned victorious when they beat African Leopards 1-0. Kumarin “Bubble” Naidoo scored Shamrocks’ winner midway through the first half. Hearts are currently at the top of the log with 16 points, followed by African Leopards with 15 points and Kuyga Masters in third place, also with 15 points. The Zwide side knew it was not going to be an easy away game for them because Sparks are very stubborn at home. Winners kept on knocking on Sparks’ door, but veteran goalkeeper Patrick Rasi stood his ground. Sparks’ fullback Mlungisi Jazino Bonga scored his side’s opening goal just before the first half ended. Winners launched numerous attacks, but they could not beat Rasi, who produced some brilliant saves. In the second half, Winners put more pressure on and ultimately their fullback, Nkosana Gaza Ndondo, found the back of net to cancel out Sparks’ lead. With many supporters of the home side in attendance, Sparks
piled more pressure on Winners. Sparks’ right winger Sizwe Hani came up with the long-awaited winning goal that sparked joy in their loyal supporters. In another tough battle, AmaUnits shared a 2-2 draw with Villagers. EXPRESS ON WHEELS: BETTIE GILIOMEE
Fiat Tipo shows good form with function ITALIAN design has in my mind always been much more about form than function – very much like designer shoes and clothes which don’t have much function as long as they look good. With the Tipo, the Italian car manufacturer shows that it can pack a punch with function in a not too shabby form. The Tipo has been developed around Fiat’s “Skills, no frills” brief giving plenty of functionality in a car that offers value for money. Fiat has recently launched the Tipo in SA giving it a competitor in the medium-compact segment with hatch and sedan versions. Ri-
vals include the likes of the Hyundai i30, Ford Focus, Mazda3 and Toyota Corolla. It is aimed at a market segment for which family-friendly space, features and value for money are the most important boxes to tick. The sedan is available in the Pop or Easy versions while the hatchback is available in the Pop, Easy or Lounge specifications. The range offers one diesel (1.3 MultiJet II VVT turbodiesel) and two petrol (1.4 and 1.6) derivatives, while the transmissions can be five or six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission depending on the engine. The vehicle test driven was a six-speed manual 1.4 litre hatch version. Exterior The Tipo’s exterior design style is very much in line with the market it caters for – not too racy, but definitely not conservative either with a hint of sporty touches. The front is dominated by the chrome-embellished mesh grille housing that distinctive Fiat emblem. The LED daytime running lights add to the sporty touches as does the spoiler on the rear of the hatch model. The sides of both the sedan and hatch versions are dominated by a form line running from the headlights to the sculpted tail lights. Interior: One of the most impressive features is the roomy interior with its neat dashboard and instrument panel layout. The controls are easy to reach and adjust. The seats are well contoured and comfortable and the driver’s seat height can also be adjusted. The interior of the Tipo features numerous compartments in various shapes and sizes for storing personal objects, smartphones, bottles, coins and more. A media centre for connecting devices is situated in front of the gear lever and features USB and auxiliary ports. The Tipo comes with plenty of comfort features. The audio system of the high spec models, features a touch screen with Bluetooth. The high-spec Lounge derivative is also fitted with an automatic air conditioning system, a multifunction steering wheel, electric front windows and side mirrors, 17-inch alloy wheels, chrome detailing, a leatherwrapped steering wheel, rear parking sensors (on all except Pop derivatives), cruise control and lumbar support for the driver’s seat. The luggage space is very generous in the Tipo and the 60:40 split rear bench adds to its storage flexibility. During my time of test driving the Tipo, it was taken on a road trip to Cape Town for a long weekend and the boot was more than adequate for the luggage of three people, with enough space available to accommodate that of two more people. The boot has a stepless still which made the loading and unloading of luggage that much easier. It’s leg- and headroom is very good.

The Tipo’s exterior design style is very much in line with the market it caters for – not too racy, but definitely not conservative either with a hint of sporty touches. PHOTO:SUPPLIED A reverse camera is optional on Easy sedan and Easy hatchback, while being standard on the 1.3 Lounge derivative. Also available is Cruise Control on all Easy and Lounge models and can be selected as an option on the Hatchback Pop model. All Tipo models feature full size spare wheels. Ride: One of the most noticeable features of the engine is its noiseless idling. It offers a very zippy and energetic, yet smooth ride around town. It really likes to be moved quickly through its six gears. It has a city mode with extra power to the steering wheel to make it easier on the arms for city driving. The sporty three-spoke steering wheel has a nice feel beneath the fingers. The national road from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town, with its long, fast stretches interspersed with slow stretches, was the perfect opportunity to put the Tipo to the test for handling and fuel consumption. Owing to its lack of turbocharging, the naturally aspirated 1.4-litre engine did feel a bit underpowered while overtaking, especially uphill, and one had to gear down in most cases to overtake with confidence. That said, the road handling was excellent, and despite the windy conditions during our road trip, it felt sturdy on the road and delivered a very comfortable and relaxed ride. In fact, it was so enjoyable that what should have been a seven-hour journey turned into a 12-hour road trip in each direction, without a hint of tiredness after the long journey. Owing to the relaxed driving, the Tipo managed to get a fuel consumption of 5.8 litres per 100km on the open road from Cape Town. This is quite similar to the combined fuel consumption claimed by Fiat as being 5.7 litres/100km for the 1.4 petrol (the model tested).

Fiat claims a fuel consumption of 3.7 litres/100km for the 1.3 diesel and 6.7 litres/100km for the 1.6 automatic. Safety The Fiat Tipo offers modern active and passive safety devices such as standard, driver and front passenger airbags (with side and curtain airbags as an option). Also standard is electronic stability control (ESC). This sophisticated system helps to maintain steering control under extreme conditions, such as on wet or slippery roads or when tackling tight corners or making sudden emergency manoeuvres. If the driver exceeds the performance limits for the road conditions, causing the vehicle to oversteer or understeer, the system intervenes by braking one or more wheels so as to maintain stability. The ESC system includes a number of devices including Panic Brake Assist (PBA), which intervenes in case of emergency braking by increasing the braking force; ABS; traction control (TCS), which detects wheel slip under acceleration and intervenes by reducing engine torque; and Hill Start Assist, which maintains brake pressure for approximately two seconds after the driver releases the pedal.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE
Ricciardo survives bedlam in Baku IF you had been given absolute free reign to dream up the most dramatic script for a Formula 1 race, the chances are you still wouldn’t have come up with what transpired in the 51 laps of the 2017 Baku Grand Prix. From the first corner on lap one to crossing the finish line there was action and drama and tension stamped on every lap of the race which featured three safety-car periods and red flag stoppage. While Hamilton led cleanly away pole, his teammate, Valterri Bottas, and Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen clashed into turn two. Raikkonen with significant damage to the floor of his car somehow maintained a place in the top 10 while Bottas’s puncture dropped him a lap down. Hamilton led Sebastian Vettel by roughly three seconds until lap 13 when the first safety car was deployed to recover the stricken Toro Rosso of Dannil Kvyat. Racing resumed on lap 16, but an overzealous Esteban Ocon’s attempt to overtake his Force India teammate Sergio Perez ended in a shower of carbon fibre and the deployment of a second safety car. The Pirelli tyres, supersoft and soft, available for this weekend, proved a step too hard as nearly the entire field of drivers struggled with warming the tyres to their optimal working range. A tyre not within this critical working range produces little to no grip and leaves drivers vulnerable. It’s for this reason that Hamilton complained that the safety car was not going fast enough. Nevertheless, Hamilton bunched up the
field into turn 16 which must’ve caught Vettel by surprise as he hit the rear of the Mercedes. The Ferrari driver then pulled alongside Hamilton and turned his Ferrari into the side of the Mercedes. It was an outrageously disappointing, irresponsible and daft reaction from Vettel which earned him a 10 second stop/go penalty. While some might like to think Vettel’s actions are defensible considering the fact that, post-race, he could not defend his actions. So much carbon fibre lay strewn across the racetrack that the race was red-flagged on lap 22 in order to clear it away. While Raikkonen had retired with additional rear-wing damage a lap earlier, the Ferrari mechanics had somehow managed to change an entire floor and a rear-wing endplate to get Raikkonen back in the race. Similarly, Force India made running repairs to Perez’s car and he too was back in the race. Unfortunately, the pair would ultimately retire from the race. The race resumed after a 23 minutes stoppage with Hamilton in the lead and Vettel behind. Through the chaos and carnage Williams’ Lance Stroll and Felipe Massa had emerged in third and fourth. Daniel Ricciardo, who had earlier been 17th in the Red Bull after an early stop, was not in fifth for long as he pulled off an exquisite move to pass both the Williams’ into turn one on the restart. Felipe Massa would soon after retire with a broken rear-damper. The drama was still far from over, however, as the headrest on Hamilton’s leading Mercedes had not been attached correctly. He tried in vain to push it back into place
before the FIA directed the Mercedes team to stop and fit a new headrest. It dropped Hamilton to eighth and promoted Vettel into the lead of the race but the Ferrari driver still needed to serve the 10 second stop/go penalty. He served the penalty on lap 33 and emerged in seventh ahead of Hamilton. Now it was Daniel Ricciardo in the lead with Lance Stroll in second and Haas F1’s Kevin Magnussen in third. Magnussen could not mount much of a fight for the position though and was quickly shuffled back by Ocon before himself falling victim to a recovering Bottas. Vettel and Hamilton would also pass Ocon and Magnussen. Bottas’s significantly superior pace to the Williams of Stroll proved just enough as he snatched second place, on the line, by one tenth of a second. As if to prove how crazy the Baku Grand
Prix was, Fernando Alonso was running in fifth at one stage and with a bit more grunt from the Honda could justifiably have won the race. As it was, Ricciardo took his first win since Malaysia 2016 ahead of Bottas and Stroll who, at 18, has become the youngest rookie to score a podium finish. Astoundingly, Vettel emerged in fourth and extended his championship lead to 14 points over Hamilton who eventually finished fifth. Esteban Ocon salvaged sixth ahead of Kevin Magnussen in seventh and Carlos Sainz in eighth. Fernando Alonso finally opened McLaren’s points account with ninth as Pascal Wehrlein in the Sauber finished 10th. The Baku Grand Prix was undoubtedly the race of the season so far as nearly the entire field ran into some sort of trouble. Roll on Austria.

Madibaz target semis at USSA hockey tournament REPORTER DESPITE losing several senior players, the NMMU-Madibaz men’s hockey team will be striving to repeat last year’s effort at the University Sport South Africa (USSA) tournament in Johannesburg this week.
Hockey manager Cheslyn Gie said they were eager to emulate their 2016 achievement of third when they compete at the University of Johannesburg and Wits from today until Sunday. Although not looking too far ahead, he said they would target a position in the semi-finals. “We know it will be a tough week and the fa-

vourites will be Maties, who are the defending champions. “Tuks and UJ will be up there as they have recruited top players, while Wits will also be looking to do well after investing heavily in their playing resources.” He added that although the team has lost some senior players through injuries and some have graduated, that will not deter them from aiming for a spot in the top four. Gie also explained how the Hockey World League tournament, which followed the USSA week, could have an impact in the team’s fortunes. “Players selected for the national squad will not be allowed to play at the USSA tournament and this could make things very interesting.” The team has undergone a two-week training camp in preparation of the USSA week and several friendly games have been lined up to complete their preparations. Madibaz coach Michael van Rensburg said he wanted the women’s team to show some improvement on their seventh place of last year, with the top six their initial goal. After competing in the Varsity Hockey competition this year, he said they had been working on a number of areas. “In terms of our conditioning, the squad have had a four-week fitness programme and the results have been pleasing so far. We still have a way to go, but we are in a better space

now than prior to Varsity Hockey.” Van Rensburg added that on-field training had been held three times a week, culminating in a training camp last weekend. From a mental perspective Van Rensburg said several sport psychology sessions with Port Elizabeth-based clinical psychologist Wesley Kew had made a big difference. “This has been of tremendous value as we look to move into a new era we are creating for NMMU women’s hockey,” he said. “We look forward to the Eastern Cape getting behind us as we strive to establish ourselves during a rebuilding phase with a young side that will aim to make the region proud.”
