Gino Lee star in the making ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL

HERE is no stopping the young, multi-talented, local teen sensation on his journey to stardom.

Port Elizabeth music artist, Gino Lee, is about to record two singles at the same Atlanta studio where Justin Bieber recorded his debut album. He also recently landed a role in an international film to be shot in Mauritius this December. Gino Lee (18), who has been back in his hometown for a short break, spent the past year in the US where he was enrolled at the New York Film Academy (NYDA) - a prestigious scholarship he earned while at the ARTS (Applause Rising Talent Showcase) in Orlando, Florida, in 2013. ARTS give aspiring artists the opportunity to audition in front of industry agents, managers and label executives. Gino received 18 call backs from these auditions. Music and singing being his first love, Gino was however scouted for acting and modelling. Being no stranger to acting, he performed a lead role in Theodor Herzl High School’s musical showcase, Aida, when he was in matric last year. Gino and his mom, Bernie, spent the past year in New York, where Gino not only studied at the Academy but also performed at various gigs to keep his music going. He also gained experience in front of and behind the cameras by getting involved in numerous student films. “The decision to go to the USA was the best decision I could have ever made. It has really changed my life. It have learnt so much and words cannot describe how grafeful I am for my parents for supporting me and encouraging me to make the move,” said Gino. According to him, the best part of his year spent at NYDA was the fact that he was able to do both acting and music. Although New York was a bit daunting at

first - with extreme weather conditions and having to take three trains to get to school - he found the academy a refreshing mix of different cultures where he made many friends and industry contacts. “The lecturers are working actors who also had to go for auditions sometimes - which is an indication of how hands-on the academy is. I had the opportunity to do various advertisement shoots and work behind the camera as well.” The school hours were long - from 9am until 9pm, but on weekends he had time to go and perform at gigs organized by mom Bernie. One of these gigs was at The Bitter End, a venue which saw the likes of Bob Dylan, Bill Cosby, Lady Gaga and Joan Rivers performing there. “The most important thing for us was to keep in constant contact with the people he received callbacks from at the ARTS, and we did just that,” said Bernie. “It is all about how many contacts you have and who you know. We have met many big names, such as Beyonce’s former manager and people who have worked with artists such as Coldplay, Bruno Mars and Miley Cyrus. It was overwhelming at first, but we realized that we were very privileged to be in that position and appreciated all the valuable advice we got from them,” said Bernie. Gino Lee has since received his working permit, so he can now legally earn money while performing in the US. He will be returning to the US in January where he will pursue his music career, with the option of returning to the film academy for another two years. He will, as he has the past year, keep his local fanbase informed of his doings via his very popular Facebook page. “I am so grateful for the support I’ve been getting from my friends and fans in Port Elizabeth. I want to thank each and every one for all the messages of encouragement I received. They really kept me going.”

THE various canals in the West End area that had become blocked with filth, have been cleaned up. The canals carry water from the surrounding sources such as the Van Der Kemp Kloof and the Varsvlei. The fresh water being carried through the canals, however, has become polluted by dead leaves, trees and dumped rubbish, leaving a stench in the area. The canals are in very close proximity to resi-

dential properties such as those in St Wilfred’s Street. Ward 35 DA Councillor Anne du Plessis has called on the help of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Roads and Stormwater Department, who arranged for the network of canals to be cleaned. “The blocked canals were really a great concern in my ward because the stench became unbearable for the residents in this area. It was also causing a health risk to especially the children playing around outside,” Du Plessis said. Residents said they were relieved that the situation had been addressed.

A CROWDED dance floor with even a man

of 109 years old dancing in his wheelchair to end of the BLG Logistics Senior Citizen the Year Awards on Saturday, was proof that age does not have to prevent one from keeping active, not only enjoying life but also giving joy with one’s life. The awards saw three ladies walk away with top honours. Maggie Cunningham (79) was the winner in the age group 70 to 79 years, while Jumartha Milase Majola (82) and Wilhelmina Africa (90) took first place in the 80-89 years and 90 and over categories respectively. Also honoured on the evening were two people who have passed the 100 years’ milestone-Jan Steenberg, who is 109 currently and two months shy of his 110th birthday in December and Sally Hearnden, 102. The prestigious awards, of which Port Elizabeth Express is a media sponsor, are run as an annual event by the Golden Oldies Fund raising club in collaboration with BLG Logistics, recognising the time and effort volunteered by senior citizens making a positive contribution to the community. Spec-Savers was one of the major prize sponsors of the awards. The Summerstrand Hotel sponsored the venue for the event. Maggie is the founder member of Northern Lights School serving physically disabled children, coloured, black and Indian children who could not attend mainstream schools. She is also on the board of Executors of Cheshire Homes SA, as well as Seringa Association for the Aged and Busy Bees Women’s

Association of her church, and is actively involved in the Sanctor Medical Centre. Jumartha started an old age group in 1982, now known as Hoza Golden Age club which is still going strong. Members at Hoza are encouraged to be involved in their community activities. She also started the Girl Guides club (now affiliated to Age-in-Ac-

tion) in which she encourages senior citizens to keep healthy by inviting nurses to present health talks. On a monthly basis members’ blood pressure is recorded, as well as their weight. Counselling is provided to those in need. Wilhelmina is a former missionary who is the leader of her Bible Study Group and is involved in various associations which make a difference in the community.

Madonsela also spoke about her role in government, saying that Chapter 9 institutions needed youth participation and that leaders today needed to be more transparent and accountable to the youth. Mashologu-Kuse, who is also the owner of Daring Media, said her company had shown that there are young people that deeply care about this country and that there was power in an assembly of young people coming together. “We are all about going there – where people are afraid to go and talk about the issues that everyone talks about behind closed doors,” Mashologu-Kuse said.

Mashologu-Kuse spearheaded the event with her company Daring Media, which had the Public Protector giving a speech on the current issues affecting the youth of South Africa, at a youth dialogue session at NMMU, followed by a civic participation and dinner at the Boardwalk ICC. Mashologu Kuse, whose mother, NMMU Social Work Professor Thobeka Mashologu died of cancer in 2011, said the visit by Madonsela was a huge a success. “The Youth Dialogue had about 600 young people and the dinner had over 200 professional and business people. It brought people from the Bay together – all because one young person thought it could be done. They said we couldn’t do it but we did,” she said. “My mother started the Social Work Department at Unitra (known as WSU), and became the second black female professor at NMMU. For someone that grew up in a 4bedroom house in Mdantsane, she proves to me and many others you can be that which you want to be,” added Mashologu-Kuse. Hope Spots, selected by Dr Earle, are areas which are critical to the health of the ocean — the Earth’s blue heart. Some of these Hope Spots are already formally protected, while others still need defined protection. Marine Biologist Shirley Parker Nance who was one of the guest speakers, said she was delighted to have Algoa Bay named as one of the country’s Hope Spots as this would also help them in their petition against the Fish Farm which has been authorised by the Department of Environmental Affairs. Tony Ribbink from Hope Spots said each Hope Spot will have an education trust fund which will help schools and children in the neighbouring communities understand the importance of sea life. “We are also publishing a photo journalism book with pictures taken from all around the country’s coastal areas, taken by ordinary South Africans, and all proceeds from this book will go into the trust fund,” said Ribbink. Ribbink said Dr Earle, who is from the United States of America, will be visiting the country, travelling from Cape Town to Durban in December, exploring the interactive live streams of the deep ocean sea life. Christmas Market this Saturday The Lutheran Church in Springfield is hosting its annual Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt) on Saturday, November 1, celebrating the festive season true to its German heritage. THE Newton Park swimming pool opened to the public last week Friday after months of renovations and hard work. “The Municipality is proud to announce that the pool is ready and open to the public,” said municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki. The pool has been closed since July last year when a burst pipe caused the water to go green and interrupted the SA National Aquatic Championships. Approximately R1 million was spent on the pool upgrade. The re-opening also coincided with the Learn to Swim Programme that the Municipality is currently running through the

Sport and Recreation Sub-directorate. “Swimming is a very important life skill because it is a sport that can save a life,” said Ward 39 DA councillor Margaret de Andrade. There are currently 3 000 learners taking part in the Learn to Swim Programme. All schools are urged to participate in the programme and are also allowed access to using the pool. “We need to try to drown-proof every child in the country and allow children to be able to pass on their skills,” said De Andrade. Councillor De Andrade concluded with the vote of thanks, thanking all the people who contributed to the hard work and all the learners who are part of the Learn to Swim programme.

Protea Place of Safety children enjoy a shopping spree FORTY children from the Protea Place of Safety were treated to a shopping spree courtesy of Jet Stores and the Nashua Children’s Charity Foundation (NCCF) on Saturday, October 18. According to organisers, for many of the children this was the first time they had ever set foot in a mall, let alone been given the opportunity to choose their own new clothes and be treated to lunch afterwards. The event is part of a nation-wide shopping spree taking place in eleven Jet Stores in eight provinces over the next four weeks, and resulting in more than 500 children receiving new clothes. Nashua has spent approximately R54 000 in Jet gift cards thus far, with the Nashua franchises in each region supplementing any shortfall for the shopping sprees in their areas. Simba from Umhlobo radio station and Mr PE finalists took part in Saturday’s shopping spree, and were a huge hit with the kids. The celebrities who took part manned the tills and helped the children choose their outfits. “The response from the children is overwhelming,” said NCCF director Helen Fraser. “Many of them have never received new clothes. The joy these children experience through the simple act of being able to choose new clothes is a wonderful thing to see.” The Jet/Nashua Shopping Spree initiative began seven years ago when Fraser approached Jet

Stores’ holding company Edcon requesting any clothing that they could spare for children under the NCCF’s care. That initial conversation sparked the idea to invite children from the orphanages and schools that receive aid from the NCCF to a Jet Store in their area where they would be given the opportunity to choose an outfit for themselves, and be treated to lunch afterwards. Since it was established the Shopping Spree budget has increased from R60 000 to R120 000 and the number of Jet Stores involved has increased from one to eleven. “Jet Club is very proud to be able to contribute towards such a worthwhile and heart warming initiative,” said Jet Club Manager, Marcelle Wilson. “What we never anticipated was how much our staff and all other parties involved would enjoy these annual shopping sprees with the kids. It’s true what they say - giving really is better than receiving. “My hope going forward is that we can involve more Jet Stores and charities from all over the country to take part in these shopping sprees, and with the help and support we’ve received from everyone involved thus far, I am confident that we can achieve that goal,” she said. – REPORTER

Wilson told us a little more about herself I knew at the age of about 15 that I wanted to become a hairstylist. I had always cut my brother’s hair and a few of my friends, not really knowing what I was doing. They always trusted me with their hair and let me cut it fairly regularly. In 2004 when I was in grade 10, I was asked to be part of a hair show for Images 1 Hair Academy. When I went for trial runs and practices at Images 1, I was so fascinated and intrigued by all the avant garde styles and ideas, that I just knew being a stylist was the career for me. I studied at Images 1 Hair Academy in 2008. I have been with my Images 1 family ever since. This year is my 7th year being a hairstylist. It’s not my job – it’s my life. I love what I do and am so passionate about the artistry in hairstyling. Making people feel beautiful and confident is definitely a daily motivation. Fast forward a few years and I am now the manageress for one of the biggest salon establishments in this town. I am so grateful to all my incredible and loyal clients,

some of whom have been with me for the last 7years. I am blessed to have so many interesting, intelligent and friendly people come into my life on a daily basis. My lovely clients are the reason I get to stretch and grow my talents. The favourite part of my job is all the amazing fashion shows and photo shoots I get to style hair for. I get be be extremely creative and create styles that are not worn every day. It allows for ‘out the box’ thinking and creativity. Along with managing Images 1, I also train our junior stylists on a weekly basis. At Images 1 our focus is always on broadening knowledge and skills. I am also a qualified assessor for our academy. I don’t think I’ll ever stop learning. New trends and styles are forever emerging, and I’ll be right there waiting to recreate and figure them out.

The incumbents will also be responsible for providing psychosocial support to MSM, facilitating healthrelated training targeting MSM, documenting services provided and capturing program data on a weekly basis. Duties and responsibilities: • Strengthen access to existing networks of MSM • Implement strategies to identify and access hidden or hard-to-reach MSM populations who may be engaging in high risk sexual activities or who are already infected but are unaware of their HIV status • Participate in the planning and implementation of outreach activities and community engagement events • Create visibility around the MOSAIC Men’s Health Initiative • Provide the following prevention services: * Provide basic information about HIV, STI, PEP and TB among MSM * Develop a client-centred risk profile * Develop a personalised risk reduction strategy * Update the risk profile and risk reduction strategy during each follow-up contact * Provide health education about HIV, STI, Hepatitis B, PEP and TB among MSM * Provide health education about risk behaviours associated with HIV infection * Provide health education about the link between drug and alcohol use and abuse and STI/HIV transmission * Distribute and demonstrate the use of external (male) and internal (female) condoms, and compatible lubrication, with a focus on condom negotiation skills * Distribute behaviour change communication material tailored to the needs of MSM * Motivate MSM to go for routine HIV counselling and testing (every 3 months) * Provide pre- and post-test HIV counselling and testing (“test-onthe-go”) if appropriate * Navigate (or escort) MSM to HIV counselling and testing (if “test-on-the-go” is not an option) * Motivate MSM to access HIV Post-exposure Prophylaxis in cases of rape or condom failure * Provide routine STI and TB screening * Refer or navigate MSM for further STI and TB screening/treatment if suspected * Motivate clients to access Hep B vaccinations (where possible) * Motivate HIVinfected MSM to go for HIV care, treatment and support * Navigate (or escort) HIV-infected MSM to HIV care and treatment services at a health facility * Complete referral slips (where necessary) * Conduct and document follow-ups of referrals (or navigation) provided * Conduct repeat contacts periodically (3, 6, and 12 months) • Provide adherence and psychosocial support services (ie lay counselling) to HIVnegative individuals, couples and groups of MSM • Maintain a confidential record of all contacts • Serve as a role model and team leader for the peer outreach workers and lay counsellors • Submit data and evidence of activities implemented on a weekly basis • Engage in other activities as required by the Social Mobilisation Officer • Be available to implement activities after hours and over weekends/public holidays. Grapes and Grains and PE’s biggest beer fest REPORTER PORT Elizabeth and the Eastern Cape’s biggest Craft Beer, Wine and Music festival, The Grapes and Grains Fest, will take place at the famous German Club in Lorraine on November 15. The festival is a wealth of “off the beaten track” wine estates, niche micro-breweries, vibrant local music and delicious food. Festival organiser, Stuart Lamb from The Craft Bru, said their goal was to expose as many people to the growing category of fine wines and craft beers without being pretentious. “It’s a chance for the micro-breweries and winery to build their brand, market themselves as a tourist destination and increase their following as a brewery and wine estate.” More than 50 craft beers and ciders, as well as 60 variants of wine and sparkling wine, will be on show, and the festival will have a family-friendly atmosphere, Hudson-Lamb said. Lamb said they expect between 1300 to 1800 people at the festival. “We have many attractions and have catered for the kids with a Kids Zone with adult supervision from 11am - 5pm, so parents can enjoy the festival without having to worry about the little ones. “There will also be great music all day with local PE bands and musicians and DJ Renaldo, who will keep the party going between sets and late into the night.” Musicians confirmed include Joe van der Linde, Lundale, Hugo Kleinhans and The Cottonfields.

Shoprite’s Basson takes the plunge to drive entrepreneurship in schools REPORTER THE names of the five schools across South Africa that will benefit from the Championship Boerewors donations to the value of R100 000 were announced last week. The Championship Boerewors donations were pledged by Whitey Basson, CEO of the Shoprite Group, when he accepted an Ice Bucket challenge after a nomination from Truworths’ Michael Mark and a number of other business associates. One of the schools that received the dona-

tion is Bayview Primary School in Port Elizabeth. These schools now each have R20 000 worth of boerewors, which they are able to use in school fundraising efforts. Basson challenged the learners at these schools to become entrepreneurs and double the money by selling boerewors rolls in fundraising efforts. He added, “We need to create jobs in South Africa which we continuously do at Shoprite, but I also believe we need to teach our children how to be entrepreneurs and create more jobs from a young age.”

Mandilakhe Ngcozela (18), ’n gr. 10-leerder aan die Hoërskool Kaap Recife, het met sy roerende lofbrief oor Jackie Kolesky se rol in sy lewe die beoordelaars van Woolworths se Onderwyser van die Jaar-kompetisie se harte gewen. “Ek het ingeskryf om julle te vertel hoe Juffrou Jackie my lewe by die skool én by die huis verander het,” lui sy brief. “Sy het my geleer om in myself te glo en nooit moed op te gee nie. Ek het danksy haar geleer om trots te wees op wie ek is en wie ek wil wees.” Boonop het Kolesky ook die onafhanklikheid waarna Ngcozela gehunker het, vir hom gebring, skryf hy. “Sy het vir my ’n elektriese rolstoel gegee. Nou kan ek self rondbeweeg en ek hoef nie ’n oorlas vir ander te wees nie. Lelethu Baby Shelter celebrates 10 years REPORTER THE Lelethu Baby Shelter in Westering celebrated 10 years of caring for babies in need (abandoned, abused, neglected, orphaned, HIV infected/affected) last week. At Lelethu, babies between the ages of 0 to 2 years receive care in a secure and loving “family-home” type environment, during which the process commences to either have them placed in forever families through adoption or reunited with birth families where possible. On Saturday, October 25, a celebratory function was held to commemorate 169 infants who have received the prospect of a better future having come through Lelethu. “The event was held as a small token of appreciation to all their stakeholders, as without their contribution the baby home would not be able to continue doing what they’re doing in our community,” said Co-

reen Lategan, Marketing and Fundraising Manager for Lelethu Baby Home. “We gave thanks to God, the amazing people who were instrumental in the inception of Lelethu, the loyal and loving staff who ensure the daily care of babies, the volunteers who serve so willingly, the various corporate and individual sponsors who continue to give so generously, doctors and other hospital personnel who treat the babies, governmental departments who finalize the administrative and legal processes and other baby homes with whom we have strong relationships. Children and sexually transmitted diseases AN alarming sixty percent of our teen population is infected with sexually transmitted diseases. According to research, sexually transmitted diseases or sexually transmitted infections are defined as generally acquired by sexual contact. The organisms that cause sexually transmitted diseases may pass from person to person in blood, semen, or vaginal and other bodily fluids. Some such infections can also be transmitted non-sexually, such as from mother to infant during pregnancy or childbirth, or through blood transfusions or shared needles. It’s possible to contract sexually transmitted diseases from people who seem perfectly healthy — people who, in fact, aren’t even aware of being

infected. Many sexually transmitted diseases cause no symptoms in some people, which is one of the reasons experts prefer the term “sexually transmitted infections” to “sexually transmitted diseases.” Sexually transmitted diseases in children may also be transmitted by sexual abuse, by accidental contact, or perinatally. Although only 2% to 10% of abused children become infected, childhood syphilis, gonorrhea, condylomata acuminata, and Chlamydia trachomatis must always be considered. petrator is usually someone the child knows or trusts. Of 21 children under 14 years of age with acquired syphilis, most were 4 to 8 years old. Girls were infected twice as often as boys. Sexual contact was confirmed in 71.4%. A chancre sore was infrequent in children; condylomata lata was the most frequent cutaneous lesion (80.9%). The main clinical findings were bone involvement (78.7%), hepatosplenomegaly (68.8%), cutaneous lesions (50.8%), and jaundice (15.1). Vulvovaginitis was the most common clinical manifestation. The sexually transmitted diseases in children are a worrisome problem. Evaluation for sexual abuse should be done in all cases. Symptoms: According to research, sexually transmitted infections have a range of signs and symptoms. That’s why they may go unnoticed until complications occur or a partner is diagnosed. Signs and symptoms that might indicate a sexually transmitted infection include: •Sores or bumps on the genitals, oral or rectal area •Painful or burning urination •Discharge from the penis •Unusual or odd-smelling vaginal discharge •Unusual vaginal bleeding •Pain during sex •Sore, swollen lymph nodes, particularly in the groin but sometimes more widespread •Lower abdominal pain •Rash over the trunk, hands or feet.

Signs and symptoms may appear a few days to years after exposure, depending on the organism. Causes: Sexually transmitted infections can be caused by:

•Bacteria (gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia) •Parasites (trichomoniasis) •Viruses (human papillomavirus, genital herpes, HIV).

Sexual activity plays a role in spreading many other infectious agents, although it’s possible to be infected without sexual contact. Examples include the hepatitis A, B and C viruses, shigella, and Giardia intestinalis.

Risk factors: Anyone who is sexually active risks exposure to a sexually transmitted infection to some degree. Factors that may increase that risk include: •Having unprotected sex. Vaginal or anal penetration by an infected partner who is not wearing a latex condom significantly increases the risk of getting a sexually transmitted infection. Improper or inconsistent use of condoms can also increase your risk. Oral sex is less risky but may still transmit infection without a latex condom or dental dam. Dental dams — thin, square pieces of rubber made with latex or silicone — prevent skinto-skin contact. •Having sexual contact with multiple partners. The more people you have sexual contact with, the greater your overall exposure risks. This is true for concurrent partners as well as monogamous consecutive relationships. •Having a history of Sexually Transmitted Infections. Being infected with one sexually transmitted infection makes it much easier for

another sexually transmitted infection to take hold. If you’re infected with herpes, syphilis, gonorrhea or chlamydia and you have unprotected sex with an HIV-positive partner, you’re more likely to contract HIV. Also, it’s possible to be reinfected by the same infected partner if he or she isn’t also treated. •Anyone forced to have sexual intercourse or sexual activity. Dealing with rape or assault can be difficult, but it is important to be seen as soon as possible. Screening, treatment and emotional support can be offered. •Abusing alcohol or using recreational drugs. Substance abuse can inhibit your judgment, making you more willing to participate in risky behaviours. •Injecting drugs. Needle sharing spreads many serious infections, including HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. If you acquire HIV by injecting drugs, you can transmit it sexually. •Being an adolescent female. In adolescent girls, the immature cervix is made up of constantly changing cells. These unstable cells make the adolescent female cervix more vulnerable to certain sexually transmitted organisms. •Men who request prescriptions for drugs to treat erectile dysfunction. Men who ask their doctors for prescriptions for certain drugs — such as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) and vardenafil (Levitra) — have higher rates of sexual transmitted infections. Be sure you are up to date on safe sex practices if you ask your doctor for one of these medications. Complications: Prompt treatment can help prevent the complications of some sexually transmitted infections. Because many people in the early stages of a sexually transmitted infection experience no symptoms, screening for sexually transmitted infections is important in preventing complications. Possible complications include: •Sores or bumps anywhere on the body •Recurrent genital sores •Generalized skin rash •Scrotal pain, redness and swelling •Pelvic pain •Hair loss •Pregnancy complications •Eye inflammation •Arthritis •Pelvic inflammatory disease •Infertility •Certain cancers, such as HPV-associated cervical and rectal cancers.

Treatments and drugs: Sexually transmitted infections caused by bacteria are generally easier to treat. Viral infections can be managed but not always cured. If you’re pregnant and have a sexually transmitted infection, prompt treatment can prevent or reduce the risk of infection of your baby. Treatment usually consists of one of the following, depending on the infection:

•Antibiotics. Antibiotics, often in a single dose, can cure many sexually transmitted bacterial and parasitic infections, including gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia and trichomoniasis. Typically, you’ll be treated for gonorrhea and chlamydia at the same time because the two infections often appear together. •Antiviral drugs. You’ll have fewer herpes recurrences if you take daily suppressive therapy with a prescription antiviral drug. Antiviral drugs lessen the risk of infection, but it’s still possible to give your partner herpes.

Antiviral drugs can keep HIV infection in check for many years, although the virus persists and can still be transmitted. The sooner you start treatment, the more effective it is. Once you start treatment — if you take your medications exactly as directed — it’s possible to lower your virus count to nearly undetectable levels.

Everyone needs to learn basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) so that he/she is are prepared when an emergency occurs. With summer, swimming and the holidays just around the corner, Life St George’s Hospi-

tal will host a free basic CPR workshop on Friday, November 7 at 11am and Saturday, November 8 at 9am, in support of National CPR Week. This CPR workshop is aimed at parents, grandparents and caregivers (baby nannies) to equip them to deal with the unthinkable event of their infant or toddler requiring CPR. Cardiac arrest in infants and children has many causes, such as strangulation, drowning or trauma - it can also be a complication

of various medical conditions. CPR is a combination of chest compressions and rescue breathing (mouth-to-mouth resuscitation) and assists with blood circulation or adequate breathing to restore circulation of oxygen-rich blood to the brain. Without oxygen, permanent brain damage or death can occur in less than eight minutes. Life St George’s Hospital Manager, André Bothma, says, “We know how easily accidents can happen and how important and effective

Better nutrition impacts on a child’s school performance IT IS not a surprise that although studies on children’s diet and academic performance date as far back as the fifteenth century, one might still be baffled by the correlation of the two and how they influence one’s child’s future. As a parent, one is mostly content when the children are fed, with little cognisance of the kind of food given to the children. But what may continue to leave one restless is one’s child’s unsatisfactory performance at school. The truth is, if the food one feeds one’s children is not adding to their academic performance, the question is how does the food they eat directly affect their school performance?

According to Christine Phillips, a qualified and a registered chef who also owns the Little Cooks Club, breakfast is vital for children daily. “Having rested for eight hours, children need a fresh supply of glucose as it is the brain’s most basic form of fuel,” said Phillips. She added that breakfast foods that are rich in whole grains, fibre, and protein while low in added sugar can boost kids’ attention span and memory, which they need, in order to concentrate at school. “A proper breakfast will contain fibre, calcium and other micronutrients which will help keep their weight in check, lower their blood cholesterol and result in fewer cases of absenteeism in school,” said

Phillips. Duncan Mosetlhe, Dietician at the Mangunzi District Hospital confirms that children who eat breakfast perform better academically than those who don’t. “Without food intake in the morning, our adult brains simply don’t operate properly, and the same thing applies to children,” he said. Without breakfast, they will battle with understanding new information, their vision may be affected, and they will struggle with remembering.” Mosetlhe emphasised that although good nutrition is important for a child at school, the best time to ensure that the child is fully pre-

pared for all academic stimulation is while they are inside the womb and during their early childhood stage. “This is where the child develops more rapidly than at any other time of their lifespan, and this foundation phase will determine the rest of their academic performance.” Mosetlhe cautions that children between the ages of zero and eight need proper nutrition or the consequences of a poor diet could be devastating. “You need to be the gatekeeper of what your children eat. Iron, iodine, vitamin A and zinc should be key ingredients of their food every day,” concluded Mosetlhe. – REPORTER

Kragga Kamma Golf Course celebrates its 13th anniversary THE Kragga Kamma golf course will be celebrating its 13th anniversary this weekend. The course was founded in 2001 and started off as a very rough and modest 9-hole lay-out. “On weekends and holidays it was a long and frustrating wait for a slot to get going with your game. This basically prompted the development of the second 9 holes. Even the original 9 holes underwent several revisions,” explained Frans Schellingerhout, President of the Kragga Kamma Country Club. In October 2011 the second 9 was officially opened and the golf course has since then been an 18 hole lay-out with a few challenging aspects to it. While social golfers can still enjoy themselves, the more serious golfers now get a lot more value for

their money. While golf is the key focus, provision is also made for squash, table tennis, pool, darts and bowls. “On November 1 we will be celebrating our 13th birthday and we are planning to make this day a joyous one for all competitors – especially those who will stay behind for the late afternoon prize giving,” said Schellingerhout. “Bookings are already open and we have already many sponsors and players, some from out of town, committed to join us on this day. Quite a number of very good prizes have already been received for this IPS competition. City Lodge PE Golf day rakes in R55 000 THE Humewood Golf Club was the venue on Friday, October 17, for the 16th Annual City Lodge Port Elizabeth Golf Day – and what a great day it turned out to be with excellent golfing weather for the 128 (32 four-balls) players participating. While the winning four-ball (with 95 points from the four-ball-alliance two score to count format) comprised the Nestle team of Wayne Emslie, Eric van Rensburg, Hennie Jordaan and Roy Garden, the big winner of the day was Soroptimist International of Port Elizabeth which received a donation of around R55 000 towards its valuable charity work in the Nelson Mandela Bay area and further afield. Significantly, this trumped the R45 000

raised from last year’s golf day, providing a tidy increase in support for Soroptimists’ leader Gail Charalambous and her team of dedicated helpers. Soroptimist International of PE is part of a global women’s organisation working in the field of human rights – it is actively involved in providing bursaries, preparing young women for adulthood, teacher training, fighting the scourge of rape, and providing assistance for women and children affected by various other factors. Comfortable seats, generous head and legroom for all three rows of seats, and plenty of luggage space ensure a feeling of luxury and privacy. Despite its comparatively compact footprint, the Mobilio offers sedan-like space, but with the benefit of three seating rows. The 60:40 split second seat row has a slide and recline function that allows the space to be optimised depending on preference and requirement. With a large door aperture and the second row’s one-motion folddown function, access to the rear seating row is easy and convenient. The third seat row is split 50:50 with a reclining function. Both seat rows can be folded flat and tumbled forward to maximise cargo space. Even with all seats in place, the Mobilio will swallow a full 223 litres of cargo, which increases to 521 litres with the third row seat folded down. Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body construction means

that the new Mobilio provides peace-of-mind safety by managing collision forces, while active and passive safety equipment includes dual front airbags, head restraints, front inertia reel seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load limiters, as well as ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution. “The arrival of the Mobilio represents another important chapter for Honda in South Africa,” says Graham Eagle, operations director at Honda Motor Southern Africa. “It extends our model offering to include a valueadded seven seater with real space, comfort, style and dynamic appeal. “Vitally, the Mobilio also meets Honda’s stringent quality and safety standards, providing our customers with real peace of mind, while the interior’s versatility and practicality will ensure that it delivers what MPVs do best: meet a very wide spectrum of family and lifestyle motoring requirements.” Pricing

Formula 1 goes Country JUDGING by the harmonious blend of NASCAR and beer, the Americans have a pretty good idea on how to spend most of their weekends. More recently they struck on another golden combination by bringing the world’s premier racing seriously to the lone star state of Texas. Dubbed the Circuit of the Americas, or COTA, Formula 1’s return to the US was celebrated with a rowdy return in 2012. This circuit too was designed by Herman Tilke but unlike his other occasionally tedious attempts at modern circuit design COTA has been lauded by drivers and fans. “Hand on heart, this is probably the date on the calendar I look forward to the most,” says Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo. “The Circuit of The Americas, in my opinion, is the best of the new breed of circuits. The nature of the corners is interesting. It’s also a very busy track where you don’t get much respite. The first sector is very special and that first turn, blind up the big hill is like nothing else in F1. It’s also a good example of the excitement a late apex can create: you can have a really good lunge

there. They’ve done a very good job.” A storm is brewing towards the back of the Formula 1 grid as two teams in particular are having a difficult time in coping with the new turbo-charged-money-pit-era of the sport. It has led to the announcement that neither Caterham nor the Marussia team will be taking part in Texas this weekend. The great hopes once held for Caterham now lay in shards as administrators Smith and Williamson, who now own the team, set out to look for a possible buyer. Its debut in 2010 and the following season for Caterham seemed to suggest a lot of potential. They were the team most likely to be snapping at the heels of the mid-field and possibly score a point or two, such was their progression. However, in the last two seasons the team seems to have hit a brick wall and was overtaken by main rivals Marussia. Caterham’s absence, with permission from Bernie Ecclestone, will also include the team missing the Brazilian GP. At Marussia financial woes have meant that that

team cannot run either. This should make for an interesting qualifying session. Along with the four cars already missing from the line-up Red Bull has already announced that Sebastian Vettel will not take part in the qualifying session. Vettel has chosen not partake as he will incur a ten-place grid penalty for using a sixth power unit, one more than is allotted for a season. Not that long ago the announcement that Formula 1 would transform to hybrid, turbocharged cars for 2014 was met with serious speculation as to the cost involved. Several teams, some of the big-wigs too, had genuine fears about the financial implication of such an imposing transformation. With two teams not making the trip to Texas or Brazil; a few others like Lotus and Sauber are in quite a fight to keep their head above water; and with Vettel missing in action from quali you have to wonder if those who pushed for the comprehensive rule changes are still as boisterously confident as before.

Formula 1 is a sport of extremes and over on the other side of the grid Mercedes is making merry and raking in the prize money. The circuit in Austin, Texas, isn’t as powerhungry as Russia’s Sochi track but this will do little to eat into the colossal competitive advantage that Mercedes wields. America - the land of opportunity-so goes the famous saying. With three consecutive victories Lewis Hamilton has been making the most of his and now sits seventeen points clear of teammate Nico Rosberg. What can Rosberg do to break the ominous momentum of his champion teammate? More importantly, does he have the mental fortitude to beat an extremely confident and ridiculously comfortable Lewis Hamilton on an equal playing-field? There isn’t a doubt that Rosberg is a quick driver with some savvy skills. As this championship draws to a climax he’ll need to call on all of it to prove that he has what it takes to be the 2014 world champion. How deep can Nico Rosberg truly dig?

A season of tries and tackles for Rowallan Park’s u/13a rugby team ROWALLAN Park’s U/13A Rugby team had a very good season in 2014, winning 11 of the 15 games they played. The season started off on a positive note when the team was unbeaten at the Bluewater Bay Primary Rugby festival in the March holiday, winning all 3 their matches convincingly. At the Charlo 7’s in April the team won the trophy for the best team performance of the day, narrowly losing to Grey in the last minute of their quarter final clash,

Grey ending up eventual winners of the 7’s. The team won all their League matches and only lost 4 matches during their derby clashes which took place on Saturdays. Thlalefo Moleko, 8th man of Rowallan Park went on to represent EP at the Cravenweek in July, while Alizwa Mapuma, outside centre of the team went on to represent the EP Elephants at the u/12 Coastal Tournament in October. Both boys scored over 20 tries for Rowallan Park. – REPORTER

Watch this lad – he’s hot! YOU CAN’T help wondering whether current Springbok fullback, Willie le Roux, may, for the foreseeable future, be something of a stumbling block to the senior international aspirations of a lad who plays his rugby in a neat white scrumcap. We’re talking here about the more or less pint-sized – by today’s hulking standards, anyway – Western Province fullback, Cheslin Koble, of course. What a rapid rise the 20-year-old former Brackenfell High School boy has made this season, shooting up from relative obscurity first to the South African Sevens squad before ending the season in Western Province’s senior ranks. Think about it – how blessed our 15-man game is with the arrival at this high level of two 20-year-olds, first the imposing Bulls flyhalf, Handre Pollard, already an established Springbok, and now baby-faced Kolbe. It’s not just provincial solidarity that has prompted Gio Aplon, another of the smallish brigade, to proclaim Kolbe’s readiness for even higher honours. Aplon who has 17

Test caps to his name, said only last week, as he prepared to further his career with Grenoble in France, that young Kolbe has everything he needs to go all the way to the top. He aired his opinion ahead of the stellar performance the youngster gave in Saturday’s Western Province 19-16 defeat of the Golden Lions at Newlands. “Cheslin has everything it takes,” said Aplon, “to go right to the top.” Adding: “He is a player for the future – and shouldn’t be overlooked because of his size.” As in Province’s 31-23 semifinal defeat of the Blue Bulls the previous week, Kolbe was again one of the home team’s outstanding players. Like a true will o‘ the wisp, he was here, there and everywhere. It’s the youngster’s style of play that immediately draws your attention. One minute he’ll be up on the edge of a ruck to act as an auxiliary scrumhalf. The next he’s in the backline to create an overlap – and always seems to know how far he can go in what sometimes seem to be risky out-ofposition areas. But with Kolbe the proof of the pudding is in the eating,

and never once in the tense 80 minutes of the Cup final was he caught seriously out of position. Anyone who has played this demanding game – even at an undemanding level – must know how bad Lions’ flyhalf, Marnitz Boshoff, must still be feeling over the five missed penalty goals he could well have nailed without trouble. Do the maths: 5x3=15. The Lions could’ve won 31-19. Most galling of all for Boshoff must have been the fulltime penalty, which had it succeeded would have resulted in extra time. Who knows what might’ve happened then? Great credit must go to the Warren Whiteley Lions pack, in the tight and loose, who had their Province counterparts almost out on their feet in those last minutes. Province try-scorer, Jaco Taute, showed he has acceleration and power to spare – while Demetri Catrakilis again showed his class with five out of five (one the conversion of Taute’s try) successes at the posts. Indeed, it was close – but for the Lions, oh so far away.
