Groot planne aangekondig vir ontwikkeling van hawe RIAAN MARAIS DIE Port Elizabeth-hawe sal binne die volgende sewe jaar ’n algehele gedaanteverwisseling ondergaan. Dít is verlede Donderdag bekend gemaak toe Transnet se nasionale hawe-owerheid sy planne vir die Baai met inwoners in Humewood gedeel het. Rajesh Dana, hawebestuurder van Port Elizabeth, het die verloop van die planne van sowat R9 miljard uiteengesit. “Die eerste prioriteit is om die brandstof- en gastenks, en die mangaanerts, (in die Port Elizabeth-hawe) te skuif (na die Ngqura-hawe). Dit sal teen 2017 voltooi wees, waarna nuwe ontwikkelings op daardie grond teen 2019 kan begin,” het Dana gesê.

In die twee jaar tussen dié datums sal die grond gerehabiliteer word sodat enige skade en besoedeling weens die stowwe wat tans daar is, herstel kan word. Daarna sal ’n gedeelte van die hawe in ’n waterfront vir die publiek omskep word. Meer ruimte sal vir vissersbote geskep word en die moontlikheid om groot passasierskepe in die hawe toe te laat, word ook oorweeg. “Ons beoog ook om Port Elizabeth die grootste motoruitvoerder in die land te maak. Buiten die vervaardigers wat reeds hier is, het ander maatskappye in die land, asook in Afrika, belangstelling in Port Elizabeth getoon,” het Dana gesê en dit as ’n “massiewe toename in inkomste” bestempel. Die verskuiwing van die brandstoftenks en mangaanerts na die Ngqura-hawe beloof ook groot ekonomiese voordele.

Volgens statistieke wat op die vergadering voorgelê is, was daar in Junie 2 280 aansoeke om leerlingrybewyse, waarvan 1 477 suksesvol was en met 142 mense wat nie vir hul afsprake opgedaag het nie. Daar was ook 980 aansoeke om rybewyse, met 205 wat suksesvol was en 147 mense wat nie opgedaag het nie.

Local e-commerce fashion success expands into Africa BETTIE GILIOMEE TWO local entreprenteurs who have built a leading women’s fashion ecommerce company, Millbug.com, from their Port Elizabeth base, are now expanding into Africa. “There’s absolutely no doubt that Africa is the place to be in the next 50 years,” said Millbug’s Managing Director, Sabelo Sibanda. “We are very fortunate to have unique insights into the African youth consumer market. Less than 600 transplants are performed each year and many adults and children die waiting for a life-saving transplant. With August being Organ Donor Month the Organ Donor Foundation (ODF) is through their “Save seven lives drive” encouraging members of the public to become organ donors. One person can save seven lives when they become an organ donor – this includes the use of 1 heart, 2 lungs, 2 kidneys, 1 liver and 1 pancreas. Two Port Elizabeth men who are hoping to qualify for a kidney transplant and find organ donors are Arthur van Hall (58) and Patrick Chrisjan (49). They will be travelling to Cape

Town on 2 September to be assessed by doctors and a psychologist before they can be put on the list. These two have been friends for over a year after meeting during their nightly dialysis sessions. Both receive dialysis for 8 hours a night, three times a week at the National Renal Care unit in Greenacres. “It’s difficult leaving your wife and children at home three nights a week while you have to go for dialysis. I go there at 6pm and only return home at 3am. We cannot leave town for long periods, so it does affect your family life,” said Patrick, who is married to Nokuzala and a father of four. He suffered failure of his left kidney in 2004 and was treated for that, but last year his other kidney also failed. Afterwards it was discovered that hypertension led to his kidney failure. Despite his nightly dialysis sessions, he still has to work during the day in his job as a supervisor for the Department of Transport.

Arthur, who owned his own courier company, had to sell his business as he couldn’t continue to work. He has diabetes and both his kidneys failed in 2006. He was hoping to be put on the list for a kidney donation last year, but this had to be postponed when it was found that he needed to undergo heart-bypass surgery. He has now recovered to such an extent that he can be re-assessed for a kidney transplant. “I will always have diabetes, but receiving a kidney will change my life and give me and my wife, Nancy, quality of life again,” said Arthur. “My wife is my biggest supporter. She is the sole breadwinner now and has to be a nurse for me at night too. She understands my emotions, my moods and my illness,” said Arthur. Both Patrick and Arthur agree that a lack of education is one of the biggest reasons people don’t become organ donors. “And people are scared of dying and don’t want to think about it,” said Patrick.

Learners excel in Spell Check THE Eastern Cape Regional Finals in the Pick n Pay Spell Check competition recently took place where the top three spelling champions were chosen, as well as the top three participating schools. The competition is run in association with the A is for Apple Literacy Initiative. The Eastern Cape Finals took place at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, South Campus Auditorium. Taking the honours in the top three schools category were in first place, Glenwood House Preparatory, in second place, Nasruddin Islamic School, and in third place, St George’s Preparatory. The top scholars were in first place, Derick Hill of Glenwood House Preparatory, in second, Courtney Bouwers of Sanctor Primary School, and in third,TwanéAndersonofKabegaPrimarySchool. The three top-placed spellers from each region competed in the national finals yesterday at Pick n Pay’s Johannesburg Office in Kensington. At the time of going to print, the winners were not yet known. The national winner will receive the coveted

Pick n Pay Spell Check trophy. The top three schools nationally will win Pick n Pay vouchers to the value of R5 000, R2 500, and R1 000 respectively. Pick n Pay’s Spell Check was launched five years ago in the Pretoria region and is now a national competition to find the country’s top speller. Since its inception, the campaign, which is designed along the lines of the traditional American Spelling Bee, has been a resounding success with both educators and learners. The programme, which offers learners a chance to pit their spelling wits against each other, is run in English and entails invited schools being sent books with 1 400 words in them to learn. It is open to Grades 5 and 6 pupils. This year 350 schools are participating nationally, with 56 000 pupils putting on the spelling caps, and 1 050 finalists vying for the national prize. Some of the words the learners had to learn include: Accoutrements, Cantankerous, Decaffeinate, Efflorescence, Fiduciary, Gazpacho, Malediction, Narcissism, Umbrage, Xerophyte, Yukata and Zenith, to name a few.

Shaido to compete in C’Town rap battle ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL THE sudden passing of his brother nine months ago is still fresh in his memory, and he is also the inspiration for rap artist Shaido’s fresh approach on his music. His brother, Curtis Koopman (aka CK), with whom he shared a love for rap, was murdered last year, and instead of giving up on rapping whilst mourning, Shaido has decided to honour his brother’s legacy by taking his skill to another level. Shaido, whose real name is Sherwin Koopman, has been invited to represent Port Elizabeth in the MCs Freestyle Battle in the annual African Hip-Hop Indaba in Cape Town. He will be at Zulu Bar on Friday and the Good Hope Centre on Saturday, September 1. “I’m grateful for this opportunity to represent my city in this competition because rap music has always been a part of my life since I was a little child. Losing my brother and fellow rap artist is part of my inspiration to engage in freestyle battle rap for its a different form of rap music. “It allows the artist to expose his emotions freely to be victorious over his opponent in the art of freestyle battle which is a skill that only a few rappers can master.” His brother’s death left a huge void, and he says he stays inspired by his brother’s motto which was “to go places”. He is therefore also using this opportunity to rub shoulders with some influential people in the music industry to hopefully further his musical career. “I know my brother is probably proud of me for taking this courageous step by taking part in this battle rap. The very best artists from all over South Africa will be there and at the end of the day there can only be one and I’m hoping to be that one to make my people and my brother proud.”

Rautenbach het die gemeenskap se hulp ingeroep en daar is nie geskroom om in te spring en te help nie. Die SuidAfrikaanse Agentskap vir Sosiale Sekuriteit (Sassa) het tydens die DA se projekte vir Mandeladag, kospakkies aan 90 van die gesinne geskenk. Op die foto is verteenwoor digers van die instansies wat skenings gemaak het. Nortje’s fish cake recipe and Van Vuuren’s generations-old banana loaf recipe were chosen from thousands of recipes submitted by home cooks from around the country, which will be published in a new heart-healthy cookbook, called “Cooking from the Heart”. 1 x 425 g tin pilchards in tomato sauce 2 eggs, beaten 1 small onion, grated 1 carrot or baby marrow, grated ½ cup (125 ml) self-raising flour 5 tbsp (75 ml) oats ½ tsp (2,5 ml) salt lemon juice and black pepper to taste 3 tbsp (45 ml) chopped fresh parsley 3 tbsp (45 ml) chopped fresh coriander/more parsley 1 tbsp (15 ml) tomato sauce or chutney 1 tbsp (15 ml) sunflower oil

Method Method

1. Flake fish and small bones in the tomato sauce, with a fork. 2. Mix fish with the remaining ingredients, except the oil. 3. Heat a thin layer of oil in a frying pan and place spoonfuls of the batter in the pan. 4. Fry on both sides until golden brown and cooked. Drain on paper towel and keep warm. Repeat with the rest of the oil and batter. 5. Serve with lemon wedges, a green salad and a baked potato per person.

Tips Tips

. Replace pilchards with any fish of your choice, like tuna or left-over hake or snoek and add another 2 tbsp tomato sauce. . These can be served with a green salad, creamy mashed potatoes and Chakalaka sauce.

Banana bread is a great way to use overripe bananas. It is perfect for a lunch-box snack for the kids.

Makes 1 loaf IIngredients ngredients

5 tbsp (75 ml) sunflower oil ½ cup (125 ml) sugar 2 eggs, beaten 1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla essence 4 ripe bananas, mashed ½ tsp (2,5 ml) bicarbonate of soda ¾ cup (180 ml) lukewarm low-fat or fat-free milk 1½ cups (375 ml) cake flour ½ cup (125 ml) wholewheat flour ½ tsp (2,5 ml) baking powder

1. Preheat oven to 180 °C. Lightly grease a 1,5F bread tin. 2. Beat the oil, sugar, eggs and vanilla and stir in bananas. 3. Dissolve bicarb in milk and stir into the egg mixture. 4. Place the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl and stir in the egg mixture. 5. Spoon batter into the bread tin and bake for about 40 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean. Allow to cool on a cooling rack.

Mom Talk Skin-to-skin programme at Life St George’s THE Life St George’s Hospital’s maternity unit has recently launched a skin-to-skin programme for moms and babies. This forms part of the philosophy that healthy newborns should not be separated from their mothers – whether they have been born through natural labour or via a caesarean section. Mother–infant separation post birth is common in Western culture. Early skin-to-skin contact begins ideally at birth and involves placing the naked baby, head covered with a dry cap and a warm blanket across the back, on the mother’s bare chest. Skin-to-skin contact between a mother and her baby at birth reduces crying, and helps the and mother to breastfeed successful-

ly and has better physiological outcomes and stability than the same care in a closed incubator. The temperature of the healthy newborn will remain in a safe range with uninterrupted skin-to-skin. Most infants are very alert in the first two hours post birth, so the timing is ideal for them to be placed with their mother. Research has also demonstrated that this practice improves baby’s blood sugar levels, makes breastfeeding easy and is great for developing the bond between baby, mom and dad. Fathers are encouraged to share fully in the birth process. Should mom, for any reason, not be able to participate in the skinto-skin experience, then dad is encouraged to do so.

Free testing for National Deaf Awareness Week National Deaf Awareness week is a focus on the importance of hearing and promoting free hearing screenings for children and adults, as well as encouraging the public to get their hearing tested. “Sometimes turning a deaf ear is to your own detriment,” says Janet Pereira founder of the Urban Sky Trust. “Gradual hearing loss occurs over time and is 100 percent preventable by ensuring exposure to recreational and occupational noise is minimal. It is an employer’s responsibility to ensure correct hearing protection is provided for employees in the workplace and it is important for people working in a noisy environment to have their hearing tested annually,” said Pereira. Noise-induced hearing loss is the second most common reason for a sensorineural hearing deficit after age-related hearing loss.

“Today’s children are constantly using electronic devices using headphones to listen to music or watch movies. Parents must monitor the levels of the sound as, even at a reasonable level, it is dangerous to their hearing. The reason for this is the sound is directly in the ear canal and this can damage the delicate hair cells in the inner ear that transmit sound impulses to the brain,” said Perreira. Hearing and sight work hand in hand and many children who have a hearing impediment can also suffer from sight loss. During National Deaf awareness week The Greenwood Primary School Partially Hearing Unit (opposite St George’s cricket grounds) are opening their audiology unit to the public for free hearing screenings from September 3 to 14. Children will be screened from 9am – 1pm and adults 2pm to 4pm. Vision Works Optometrists will also be offering free visual screenings for the

public during this period. The Tina Cowley Reading Centre in Walmer will, as part of their commitment to partially hearing children and National Deaf Awareness Week, be offering 50% discount off their reading assessments. How to motivate our children through effective parenting: Make time for your kids

It’s often difficult for parents and kids to get together for a family meal, let alone spend quality time together. But there is probably nothing kids would like more. Kids who aren’t getting the attention they want from their parents often act out or misbehave because they’re sure to be noticed that way. Many parents find it rewarding to schedule together-time with their kids. Adolescents seem to need less undivided attention from their parents than younger kids. Because there are fewer windows of opportunity for parents and teens to get together, parents should do their best to be available when their teen does express a desire to talk or participate in family activities. Attending concerts, games, and other events with your teen communicates caring and lets you get to know more about your child and his or her friends in important ways. Don’t feel guilty if you’re a working parent. It is the many little things you do that kids will remember.

Be a role model

Young kids are like sponges; they notice everything. As parents we are our children’s first role model. Pay attention to what you say or do around

them and think about what kind of example you are setting. Teach kids about chores by setting a schedule and having them help you out. Don’t tell your child to do something, but ask for their help. The earlier they learn to help you, the longer they will be willing to. Want your kids to listen to you? Show them you can listen to them.

Don’t argue with your spouse in front of the children. If they are sleeping, argue quietly. Children may feel insecure and fearful when they hear parents bickering. In addition, children will learn to argue with each other the same way they hear their parents argue with each other. Show them that when people disagree, they can discuss their differences peacefully. Avoid favouritism. If your children are quarreling, don’t choose sides, but be fair and neutral.

Express your love and affection and make time for your children

A gentle cuddle, a little encouragement, appreciation, approval or even a smile can go a long way to boost the confidence and well-being of your children. Tell them you love them every day. Give lots of hugs and some kisses. Love them unconditionally; don’t force them to be who you think they should be in order to earn your love. Let them know that you will always love them no matter what.

Set limits and be consistent with your discipline

Discipline is necessary in every household. The goal of discipline is to help kids choose acceptable behaviors and learn self-control. They may

Set boundaries such as bedtimes and curfews, so they learn that they have limitations. By doing so, they actually get a sense of being loved and cared about by their parents. They might rebel at those boundaries, but inwardly enjoy knowing that concerned parents guide and love them. Teach them what is right and wrong. If you are religious, take them to the religious institute that you follow. Don’t be hypocritical or be prepared for your child to point out that you are not “practising what you preach”. Make sure that they have a healthy way of life. Many parents do this the wrong way. Instead of forcing children to try eating something, give them a choice between two things. It can push children, especially preteens and up, to a very emotional point, if you begin to harp for them to change their eating habits. If they want something unhealthy, suggest an alternative or a smaller size. If you know they favour a certain unhealthy food at a restaurant, taking them there a lot is not good. And if you start over-explaining to the child that it is unhealthy or that they shouldn’t get it, they may take it the wrong way and feel as if you are insulting them. Once this happens, they will no longer want to go out to eat with you, and they will feel bad eating around you which could make them want to sneak and hide junk food from you.

Spa – The greatest place on earth

IT may not have been scientifically proven yet but most Formula 1 fans will hastily agree that Spa-Francorchamps is most likely the greatest place on earth. An entire month has passed since the Hungarian GP but some things are so fantastic that they are worth waiting for. In this case the wait has been for one of the most iconic races on the F1 calendar, the exceptional Belgian GP. The Spa-Francorchamps circuit surrounded by luscious greenery is situated is the foothills of the Ardennes Mountains. What can one say about a circuit which has been lauded year after year as one of the best ever built?

With its great flow and mighty corners, such as Pouhon, it certainly is one of the best places to truly illustrate all that defines a F1 car. Its high speed corners demand prodigious aerodynamic performance and its straights demand a full throttle blast of 23 sec. It frequently rains in the Ardennes region and at least some part of the weekend will be affected by inclement weather. A unique characteristic of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit is the vast amount of land that it covers. Track conditions have the ability to range from very wet to damp from one end of the seven-kilometre-long circuit to the other. The changeable weather will highlight the importance of being able

to adjust strategy with little notice. The great thing about the 2012 season is that despite being eleven races into it there are still several drivers who have a legitimate chance of becoming the world champion. On the other hand a tough day in Belgium could mean the end of a driver’s challenge. Jenson Button, currently 88 points adrift, cannot afford to score below par at Spa. If JB is to have any chance of winning the title, he has to finish in the top three on Sunday. It shouldn’t, however, just be JB’s strategy. It has to be the plan for all of those who have designs on the 2012 title. Nine races remain in the season and one non-finish or low scoring race could

spell the end. However, let’s not get too far ahead. There is still a matter of the Belgian GP that needs to be settled. If there is a favourite for this weekend’s race, it has to be the so-called ‘King of Spa’ Kimi Raikkonen. He’s been on the top step of this particular podium on four occasions, stretching as far back as 2004. The manner in which a few of those four victories came about, is truly staggering. A tenth place start in 2004 was a mere afterthought as he lapped two seconds quicker than anyone else on a drying track. In 2009 he somehow dragged an uncompetitive Ferrari to the front and held on for the team’s only victory that season. It could be win number five for Raikkonen this weekend, but the competition will be fierce and it will come from all corners. Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull have a big part to play. Fernando Alonso will fight tooth and nail for eve-

ry possible point he can score, guaranteed. Lewis Hamilton has the potential and the car to keep his momentum going from Hungary, but the McLaren hasn’t been as impressive in wet conditions. Surprisingly Red Bull’s RB7 has looked better in the hands of Webber than in those of double world champ Vettel. The ban of the blow diffuser took with it the team’s once untouchable dominance and some of Seb Vettel’s jovial demeanour. At some instances this season he’s gotten a bit hot under the collar; a telling sign of pressure. Nevertheless, he is a classy racer and one not to be under-estimated. The next 14 weeks will be packed with nine races. Spa is as great a place as one could ever hope for to start what is undoubtedly going to be one the most tremendous battles in F1 history.

Mazda CX-5 puts sport, smart in SUV driving comes to mounting high pavements when parking is at a premium. And all of this is combined in a good looking package. And Mazda is ticking all the boxes with their CX-5. The vehicle test driven was the top of the range Mazda CX5 2.0 Individual with a six-speed automatic gearbox.

Interior

The CX-5 boasts keyless entry - giving the ladies especially one less thing to worry about finding in their handbags - as long as the handbag (with the key inside) is with one when you want to drive off, of course. To start or switch off the car, simply push the button behind the steering wheel. The interior is very stylish with accents of chrome and leather seats. The kids will also be thrilled with their own armrest – with cupholders – in the back. The vehicle tested had a touchscreen monitor and a camera showing what is behind your vehicle as soon as the gear is slotted into reverse - something which I feel is non-negotiable on a biggish vehi-

That sounds like the best of both worlds for the SUV mad South African motoring public. Another thing Mazda

is adding to the mix is smart technology being the first model to fully incorporate Mazda’s Skyactiv technology which improves fuel economy through smart engines and green technology. Compact SUV’s are all the rage, especially amongst women buyers who, like me, favour the high seating position, the high ground clearance and the feeling that you can virtually go anywhere – if you really have too – especially when it

Ride

I found the automatic gearbox very lazy on acceleration and on uphills. On straights, however, it moves very well – at speed as well as in traffic. The steering is very responsive, the handling superb and the ride comfortable in this very surefooted vehicle. It handled the bumps and circles of city travelling with grace and without effort, often making you feel as if you are driving a sedan with the added bonus of the high seating

position.

Price

The CX-5 is available in three derivatives, i.e. the Active, Dynamic and Individual, with the Active being the most basic model and the only one without the automatic gearbox. The Active has 17-inch steel wheels and acloth interior. The Dynamic, has an 6-speed automatic gearbox, 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, leather coverings for the handbrake and steering wheel, as well as a 40/20/40 split rear seat. The top of the range Individual (which was the car test driven) has an automatic 6-speed gearbox, 19-inch alloys, a nine speaker audio system, a full leather interior and font and rear parking sensors with reverse camera. A 5.8-inch touchscreen is standard and Bluetooth and USB and auxiliary connections are provided. Coach Meyer has mountain of problems BY the skin of their teeth. It couldn’t get any closer than that for the Springboks in Mendoza last weekend. This city at the foot of the Andes mountain range near Argentina’s west coast remains a hoodoo for South African teams. In 1972 Jannie van Aswegen’s Gazelles managed a win in a match there that made a very different kind of history. The referee lost the plot completely. What then occurred remains a record to this day. The match started with the requisite 30 players. It ended with 25. The ref sent off three of the home side and two Gazelles. There was no 10-minute punishment period in those days. Sent off meant exactly that – for the duration. That wasn’t the end of it. One of the weekend papers described last Saturday’s Mendoza crowd as “obstreperous”. Really? On that day forty years ago, at a lineout on the “popular” side, one of the Gazelles spotted a spectator brandishing a revolver. He left the lineout, disarmed the man and returned to his business in the lineout. Jean de Villiers’ South African team last Saturday made the crucial mistake of not taking the South Americans seriously enough, and almost paid the ultimate price. As a result, they had to hang on grimly until the 66th minute, when a lucky (for them) attempted stab-kick ahead by Los Pumas was charged down by Francois Steyn. This led to a desperate dash for the tryline and the burly centre scoring a face-saving try. Morne Steyn’s conversion equalised the score – bringing about, at 16-16, the luckiest of final results. The major difference between the two sides could be summed up in just a few words. Los

Pumas, led by fiery captain Juan-Martin Fernandez Lobbe, showed to a man more grit, more determination, more crazy courage – at times even greater commonsense and skill – than the sluggish, largely outplayed Springboks. (Critics, judging by the Boks first round 27-6 defeat of the Pumas, weren’t without blame with post first test writings such as “on this performance the Boks’ should not have too much trouble in the return match in Mendoza next week”.) Coach Heyneke Meyer has a mountain of serious thinking ahead of him. Is Morne Steyn a flyhalf with little else to offer but his goalkicking ability? Unhappily his kicking latterly has not been quite the Dead-Eye Dick finished article it used to be. It’s so unfair to harp on this, but his first kick in the second minute should have been, by his usual standards, a regulation three-pointer. In hindsight that could have saved the Boks their Mendoza blushes. But there is no one experienced enough and available at the moment. Several key players were not at their best. Is Francois Hougaard our best scrumhalf? If so, only injury should keep him out of the No. 9 jersey and put a stop to the fourth quarter habit of switching him to wing. Why was hooker Adriaan Strauss relatively quiet? Was his injury from the first test hampering him? Andries Bekker looked listless, too. The Bulls’ Jacques Potgieter seemed largely ineffective for the “collisions” role for which he was selected. Awaiting the Boks next in “The Rugby Championship” in a fortnight’s time (September 8) in Perth are the Wallabies. Meyer’s team hopefully will by then have taken to heart a rousing wake-up call.
