Matric exams ‘glitchfree’ THANDI SETOKOE

S the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations concluded yesterday, the Eastern Cape Department of Education said operations progressed smoothly without any glitches. This week, learners across the country sat for their last exams for English (home language), agricultural management practices and design, among others. Education spokesperson, Malibongwe Mtima said no irregularities were reported. “We have had an incident-free examination. No major incidents took place, which means
the learners heeded to our call,” Mtima said. He said the programmes introduced by the department in preparation for the examinations were of great assistance to the learners. “We provided the learners with previous examination papers, as well as extra supplementary hybrid material, to top up the conventional textbooks.” Mtima added that counselling was also offered to both the learners and parents, while learners were also given documents to sign which stated what would happen in the case of exam irregularities. “The learners were well aware that should they be found guilty of any irregularities, such as copying, they would be subjected to
all the penalties involved – which include a three-year suspension to write examinations.” Mtima said provisions had been made for the learners who do not receive favourable outcomes. “The department has various tailor-made programmes for matrics which include the second chance matric programme. “Learners who have failed more than two subjects are also requested to apply for supplementary examinations, which will be written early next year. We appeal to the learners to grab these opportunities so that they can obtain their matric certificate,” Mtima said. He said marking will commence at 17 identified marking centres shortly, adding that the
department has enlisted the services of more than 5 000 markers to mark the scripts. Appealing for calm and rationality irrespective of the outcomes of the exams, Mtima said, “As the department we are hoping that the learners will produce better results this year. We want to wish our matrics all the best and hope that they will be accepted at their desired tertiary institutions so that they can pursue their studies.” The announcement of the pass mark for the class of 2017 will be conducted by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga on January 4, next year, and the learners will thereafter be able to access their results at their schools or examination centres on January 5.

ReTrade lends helping hand to needy families REPORTER THE ReTrade Project, a community-based recycling and social empowerment initiative, has welcomed more than 200 traders to support the Nelson Mandela Bay’s impoverished communities since coming into existence in April. The project gears for sustainability and pro-
vides hope to people from disadvantaged areas in the Bay, by exchanging recycled waste for basic food items. With a dual aim of benefiting both the environment and the people of the region, ReTrade targets participants who are willing to seize the opportunity of turning waste into tradable commodities. lect recyclable waste such as tins, plastic bottles, cardboard, white paper, mixed paper and glass, and bring these recyclables to the ReTrade trading store situated at Fountain Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Walmer Heights. “In exchange, they would then get basic grocery items, such as food or toiletries,” Grewar said. With their vision to ‘create a greener planet with less hungry families,’ Grewar said the project instils principles such as work ethic, responsibility, workplace skills and a saving mentality. “Over 2 492 bags of assorted waste has been recycled since April, proving that bartering is not dead but fully alive. “This has the capability of restoring dignity by helping those in need with a hand-up in life, rather than a hand-out.” The project has an assembled volunteer team who offer their time to assist the respective traders. “There are many ways to contribute. We encourage individuals and businesses alike to get involved,” Grewar added. The ReTrade Project welcomes food donations, financial contributions, recycling donations and volunteer participation at their trade store.
Jessica Ronaasen, a social worker from Port Elizabeth, encouraged all corners of society to unite behind the project’s aim of uplifting often neglected populations in the metro. “We encourage families, friends, businesses, charities and all those wanting to make a difference to take up the challenge of supporting this community-based recycling project,” Ronaasen said. SASSA office relocation delayed REPORTER THE South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) recently announced its intention to relocate the Walmer local office, but the move has since been delayed. The office, which is currently located in the Trustbank Building in Govan Mbeki Avenue, was set to move to the corner of Community Street and Smallman Street in Walmer on December 1, but SASSA hit a snag with the building plans, forcing them to reschedule. According to Sandy Godlwana, senior manager of communication and marketing for SASSA Eastern Cape, they were under the impression that the building

plans for the new office had been approved until they recently received a notice from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality stating that they had not been approved. “We are currently in discussions with the landlord and the municipality to sort this matter out. As far as we know, the building plans were approved, hence the landlord was able to start with the construction of the building. “There are a few things that need to be resolved before we can move into the new office,” Godlwana said. “For this reason, we have removed all notices regarding the move until this matter is resolved. The various stakeholders are also being informed about the delay in our move.”

Coveted medical award Local businesses team up to for Bay pulmonologist prepare matrics for job market REPORTER LOCAL pulmonologist, Dr Luke Krige, received the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Award with gold medal in recognition of his contribution to the medical profession last week. The regional director of Netcare’s coastal region, Craig Murphy, said that Krige was deeply respected and had made his mark both in the academia and in his dedication to caring for his patients. “He truly lives his vocation, daily demonstrating an indefatigable work ethic and genuine care and concern for his patients and their families.” Founded in 2011, the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Award, an initiative of Netcare in association with the Christiaan Barnard Foundation, pays tribute to doctors who practice at healthcare facilities within the Netcare Group and who have demonstrated leadership in their specific fields while contributing to the advancement of the medical profession. “This is an unexpected honour, and I am deeply touched that my work is being acknowledged in this way,” Krige, who practises at Netcare Greenacres Hospital in Port Elizabeth, commented after receiving the award. The general manager of Netcare Greenacres Hospital, André Bothma, said Krige’s association with the hospital dated back to the facility’s inception in 1985. Prior to this, Krige did his internship at Baragwanath Hospital, as it was then known, in 1975 and his senior internship in the intensive care unit of the then JG Strydom Hospital in 1977. He gained experience as registrar at Baragwanath Hospital from 1978 to 1979, and qualified as a physician in 1979. In 1980, he served as senior registrar at the same hospital,” Bothma states. “His distinguished career has benefitted patients in both the public and private sectors, and from 1981 to 1983 he headed up the respiratory unit at Baragwanath Hospital, and then served as a consultant for the then Johannesburg General Hospital respiratory unit in 1983,” Bothma says. In 1992, Krige earned his specialisation as
a pulmonologist and over the years he has contributed extensively to national bodies and professional associations including the South African Allergy Society, the SA Pulmonology Society, the pulmonology division of the SA College of Medicine and the National Asthma Education Campaign Committee. “He was a part-time senior consultant at the Provincial Hospital Port Elizabeth from 1984 to 1994, and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians since 2014. In addition, Krige served as chairman of the Netcare Greenacres Hospital physicians’ advisory committee from 2009 to 2012 and as chairman of the hospital’s antibiotic stewardship committee since 2015,” Bothma said. In January 2003, Krige extended the range of services available at Netcare Greenacres Hospital with the establishment of a sleep laboratory. He was also instrumental in introducing a lung function laboratory and a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) at the hospital. He is also a senior member of the team responsible for extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) care at the hospital. Krige is passionate about sharing his skills and insights, holding regular presentations for general practitioners on subjects such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other lung disorders. He has contributed to a number of journals on topics such as asthma, and an assessment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in patients for air travel. He has also presented research findings from the sleep laboratory at the annual Thoracic Society congress. Krige acknowledged the team who assisted him, saying that their contributions had been invaluable to his work. “First and foremost, I would like to thank my beloved wife, Maureen, for being an outstanding practice manager. “My thanks also to Judy de Villiers, our administrator and lung function technician who has been working with me for more than 33 years, and our receptionist Leandri Cloete. Thanks also to sleep lab technician, Ina Byrne, who has been an asset for 20 years, and echocardiographer, Deirdre Steyn, who has ably assisted me for a quarter of a century,” Krige concluded.
REPORTER WHILE the matric class of 2017 anxiously awaits the release of their final NSC examination results, local businesses have already teamed up to boost the job prospects of the Nelson Mandela Bay metro’s 2018 matriculants and unemployed youth. Plans were unveiled last week for the 19th edition of the country’s largest career guidance initiative, the Working World Exhibition, which will take place from April 18 to April 20, next year, at the Feather Market Centre. Organised by Inkanyezi Events, with the endorsement of the Department of Education and Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, the exhibition provides worldclass career guidance textbooks, resources and personal career guidance counselling to up to 20 000 Grade 12 learners who attend the expo for free every year. While career guidance workbooks, which are approved by the Department of Education for use as part of the Grade 12 Life Orientation curriculum, are distributed to local Grade 12s at the beginning of the year, the initiative culminates with an exhibition attended by up to 100 exhibiting institutions, including corporates, and by 15 000 visiting matrics.

IRONMAN South Africa gets ready to make history REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay is less than 150 days away from yet another historic weekend of action ahead of the 14th edition of the annual Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship that will take place at Hobie Beach on April, 15, next year. A total of 2 200 anticipated athletes and their loved ones are set to descend on the city, each bringing an average of 3.5 people with them for a total of 7 000 people. Nelson Mandela Bay is excited to host the 2018 Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship together with over 2 000 volunteers. All will be hard at work in making sure the athletes get the best out of the race. As the athletes need to acclimatise and train on the race route, they are expected to arrive in the city from the Monday prior to the race and depart the Monday postrace. The foreign athletes traditionally stay the following week to tour the city and
visit the many tourist attractions that the Eastern Cape has to offer. To kick off what is set to be an eventful weekend, both the Corporate Triathlon Challenge powered by Algoa FM, which has been sold out for the last five years, and one of the most exciting children’s aquathlons, the Spur IRONKIDS sponsored by Pritt, are set to once again exceed the expectations. Entries for both events are now open with limited entries available. “Spur IRONKIDS has become a key feature in the IRONMAN weekend, bringing the family element to it. It is terrific to see so many kids getting outside and participating in a healthy activity, and doing so joyfully. Hopefully this inspires the kids to adopt a healthy, active lifestyle from a young age and maybe even go on to one day emulate their IRONMAN heroes in years to come,” said Keith Bowler, IRONMAN South Africa’s managing director. More than just the athletes, the specta-
tors are also itching to get the event started. “I have watched the IRONMAN event for a couple of years now and it never fails to live up to the hype. Each year I stay up until midnight to welcome the last bunch of athletes home,” said Grant Miskin (23), a local resident. It is one of the toughest races in the world, and one of the key aspects that bring athletes home are its supporters coming in drones throughout the day. The race begins with an early morning fresh 3,8km sea swim with the water temperature averaging 20.9°C. Athletes then head straight onto the bike as they go onto two flat fast laps of 90km on one of the most breathtaking bike courses on the IRONMAN circuit.
Last, they take on a full marathon that brings them closer to their fans and friends pushing them to end on a high. The event acts as a perfect taster of the much anticipated IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, which is set to take Nelson Mandela Bay by storm next year on September 1 and 2. It is the first time an IRONMAN World Championship event will be held in the African continent. To stay up to date with all the latest news, race schedules and race updates, participants and spectators are encouraged to download the IRONMAN South Africa Appfor free on Android and iOS. SECURITY officers from three different companies recently worked together and scored a win in the fight against crime in Port Elizabeth when it led to the arrest of a suspect. Fidelity ADT armed response officer Hannes Joubert was on patrol in the Framesby area on November 13 when he noticed something out of the ordinary. An officer from Atlas Security was busy getting out of his vehicle to approach a suspect who looked to be carrying a bag filled with allegedly stolen items. “Our officer decided to stop to see if he could offer his fellow security officer any assistance. “When the suspect noticed that our officer was also stopping to question him, the unidentified man started running to get away and evade arrest,” said Ryan Britz, branch manager of Fidelity ADT Security in Port Elizabeth. “The two officers then decided to split up into different streets to corner and apprehend the suspect. “An officer from Bradbury Security also joined the pursuit. “Thanks to their quick thinking and initiative, the suspect was caught a few minutes later and apprehended in Murrel Crescent.” What makes this case even more special, Britz added, is the clear synergy among all the private security companies in the Port Elizabeth area. “We are delighted with the fact that another thief has been put behind bars following the apprehension of these officers. “It’s only through our combined efforts that we can make a differ-

Korsten Library celebrates 50th anniversary The library was officially launched on November 21, 1967, and nearly 4 400 people flocked to the library in the first three weeks.
ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL FOR 50 years, the Korsten Library has been a beacon of hope and information - a place where the young can find assistance with school assignments, the old can catch up with current affairs through newspapers, and everyone can escape to the world of fiction. The Korsten Library celebrated its 50th anniversary last Tuesday, November 21. The library was officially launched on that date in 1967 and nearly 4 400 people flocked to the library in the first three weeks. According to the library’s records, by De-

cember 31 that year, a total of 545 children and 848 adults had become members. In the first nine days, an average of 514 books were issued a day. Mariam Jordaan, chairperson: Friends of Korsten Library, said this was the first library in the Northern suburbs and it was a proud moment for the residents. She also worked at the library for a period. “The librarian in charge at the time was mister LJH Allen who started off with a staff complement of four. The people from Korsten and surrounding areas were very excited about having their very own library in their midst. “Years later the libraries in West End, Gelvandale and Booysen Park were built, giving more people the opportunity to enjoy the services of a library,” Jordaan said. She further added that initially the shelves of the Korsten Library were filled with only 20 000 books, which included fiction and reference books. “The library had a separate section for children with small tables and chairs and the adult section had a number of built-in alcoves for reading. “The division between the adult and children’s section were later removed and the space was turned into one big library.” Some of the significant changes over the years include the computerised system for borrowing books which replaced the card catalogue system and a cyber centre which was opened in March 2005. Today the library currently has a staff of nine, which is headed by senior librarian Mimmi Ntshata.
= Korsten Library staff are excited about the 50year milestone. At the far back is Doray van Wyk and in the middle are Denver Leo, Noxolo Mene and Mimmie Ntshata. In front are Sebenzile Zalabe, Nomfuzo Daniso, Waadia Sharmar and Mziwoxolo Simakuhle.

Grandmother's gratitude in time of adversity THANDI SETOKOE “LIKHO has touched more lives in her short 11 years than I have in almost 53. She has taught me compassion, unconditional love and the understanding that things could be worse.” These are the words of New Brighton-based Zoleka Daweti, grandmother to 11-year-old Likhona Daweti. Likho, as she is affectionately called by her grandmother, has cerebral palsy (CP), an incurable and permanent condition that affects the brain. She often has uncontrollable seizures and she drools because her brain doesn’t tell her to swallow. According to Zoleka, in 2006, following a difficult labour, her late daughter, Noxolo Daweti became a mother via emergency Caesarean section. “She had requested one as she was struggling and getting weak,” Zoleka explained. For months the family watched the baby grow, but Zoleka said what bothered her was that at three months, she noticed that Likho had
not developed like other babies. “She did not smile, make cooing sounds or play with toys,” Zoleka said. “We began to panic and were extremely worried.” She said Likho was referred to a number of doctors and they recommended physiotherapy sessions, however, they were of no help as Likho’s condition remained unchanging. “When my daughter passed away in 2009, my heart was filled with unspeakable sadness. I felt like the love Likho needed and hoped for was dead. Yes, my grandchild means the world to me, but no love can substitute a mother’s love for her child,” she said. Talking about juggling her time as both a caregiver and a working grandmother, Zoleka said it is a real challenge. “Since Likho is a special needs baby, she needs extra care. She is still in nappies and feeding her needs complete patience as she doesn’t chew properly, so all her meals have to be soft and easy to swallow. “Unfortunately, I cannot afford to take her to
a specialised school,” she said, adding that Likho was rejected by a local special cerebral palsy school because her condition is too severe. Zoleka said recently a specialist at a local public hospital had recommended that Likho undergo corrective spinal surgery. “Apparently, it is a costly operation and I honestly do not have the funds. I am appealing to anyone who can be of assistance to come forward.” She described her difficulty with trusting people and how she had pulled away from everyone following an incident where neighbours started making fun of Likho’s condition calling her a ‘profoundly mentally disabled child’. “I was heartbroken,” Zoleka said, as tears raced down her cheeks. In as much as I have told myself that Likho is perfect, I wish I could do more,” the helpless grandmother said. “Likho may not know what is going on around her, but she has a heart and she needs respect just like any other human being. I thank God for her everyday.”

that was left to them by the late Margaret Mary Ann Phillips. The Margaret Mary Ann Phillips Pastoral Centre, situated at 42 Beetlestone Road in Gelvanpark, was the property of the late Edith and Margaret Phillips, two sisters who gave their lives and time for the Girls Brigade. Edith passed on tragically in a motor vehicle accident while on Girls Brigade business. Rev Sam Arends, who was the sisters’ minister years ago, assisted Margaret when she
approached him with a desire to leave the house to a local congregation. Arends highlighted to her the need for the Algoa Region to have a premises to have their meetings and Phillips made her decision to leave the house to the region, but that it would be used jointly by the region and the Girls Brigade. He officially handed over the house to the chairperson of the UCCSA-Algoa Region, reverend Keketso Bloem at the consecration service, as well as Margaret’s instructions of how the house should be utilised.

Upcoming designers showcase talent at urban show THANDI SETOKOE UNDER the theme, The Launch, Legado Streetwear, a local unisex clothing line established last year, will host an urban fashion show at Port Elizabeth’s Tramways Building on Wednesday, December 6.

According to Legado Streetwear’s founder, Dominic Fortuin, the show promises to be an exciting event where Legado Streetwear, together with other local upcoming streetwear designers, will collaborate to showcase their designs. “Streetwear is a distinctive style of street fashion that has grown to encompass elements of hip-hop fashion. “It commonly centres on casual, comfortable pieces such as jeans, T-shirts, baseball caps, and sneakers,” Fortuin described. He said seven local designers, which include three Nelson Mandela University students, three local high school students and an established local designer are expected to partake in the event. “It will be the first time that these young designers get an opportunity to walk their exclusive designs down the runway.” He added that all the brands represented at the event have a broad spectrum following. “The show will bring brands from all backgrounds together, therefore, showcasing the diversity of the show,” he said. Legado, a team of five young individuals, prides itself in providing exclusive and quality products to clients. “The funds generated by the event will be used for the growth and development of the young de-

Young athletes awarded at annual prizegiving Classifieds REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Modern Pentathlon Association (NMBMPA) held its annual general meeting and prize-giving recently where they rewarded the cream of the crop for their sporting achievements over the course of the last season. This year, the NMBMPA committee decided to reward all the u/9 athletes as they represent the future of sport and the association would like to keep them motivated to come back the following season. “The u/9 race is often the most enjoyed race, where the athletes really just partake for the fun of it but often with enough skill to surprise parents and older athletes,” said Shaun Richter, the NMBMPA chairman. He also handed out five chairman’s medals to athletes “who do not always win the race but always win at life”. The big trophies were dominated by a few athletes. Keira van Heerden of Collegiate Primary School won sports girl of the year for her performance in the Laser Run, biathlon, triathlon and tetrathlon. On the boys’ side, Ruan le Roux of Summerwood Primary walked away with four trophies, three of which he shared with another athlete. He won sports boy of the year for his performance in the Laser Run and shared the triathle sports boy of the year award with Tristan Marais, also of Summerwood Primary. Le Roux also shared biathle sports boy of the year with Cameron Rafferty of Graeme College, as well as the tetrathlon sports boy of the year award with Jayson Archibald of Grey Junior School. In the senior section, Gareth Vorster won pentathlete of the year, senior Laser Run
man of the year and senior triathlete of the year. Finally, the NMBMPA athlete of the year award went to Ruan le Roux for his outstanding achievements, including winning his age group at the triathle at the World Championships and placing third at the Laser Run World Champs. Biathle is a fun run-swim-run event of differing distances per age group that tests an athlete both physically and mentally. Athletes from as young as six take part in these events. “As we drew the curtain closed on a very successful 2016/2017 season, we wasted no time in opening the new season. On Sunday, November 12 we held our first biathle of the new season,” Richter said. “Since the NMBMPA is the host district of the 2018 SA Biathle and Triathle Champs, we are hoping to have a bumper season.” For more info contact nmbmpa@ gmail.com.

For very long time there was no happiness in my life, even my wife left me because I couldn't support my own family. I had to look after my parents, both old, father 79 and mother 76. I was the only working in our family working as care giver. I struggled financially, my kids needed school uniforms, my parents needed help as well like basic needs as elderly. I visited different pastors, prophets and traditional healers but no one could help me, I wasted all the money but no results, I just keep losing the small I had. I was hopeless for many years until I read Testimony of Gabriel who was testifying the good work Prof Hope did to change his life by using Short boys to put money into his account IN JUST 30min. I made an appointment with him, as he explained to me all the options like Money Rats to put money in the house in same day, Short Boys to put money in your Account in same day, Magic Ring to Win Money games like Gambling, Casino, Lotto and Betting. Magic wallet to multiply your money. I choose Money Rats to put money in my house. He explained to me the process. THANKS FOR KEEPING YOUR PROMISE
My name is Michelle from Knysna. Our life became so miserable after the fire destroying everything we had. We Lost our house with my younger Daughter and felt like killing myself too. But one day I heard a old man praising Prince KUDE on Radio for bringing back his wife who had gone for 5 years. I also got a chance meeting this Prince of miracles. I explained him about my entire situation. He used secret Zando powers to delete away all the bad luck I had and also asked me to choose between putting account money on account, casino, winning lotto, magic ring or wallet. I choose money on account. To my surprise in just 40 minutes an undisclosed amount of money was in my account!!! He also helped my Neighbour who had the same problem with mystery water to wash and he won a jackpot of 5 million rand. Our life is back on tuck thank you prince for keeping your promises and helping the poor. I urge all of you to reach this secret man of miracles.

100% RESULTS OF MONEY BACK! TRUE MIRACLE OF ASEMBE MADE ME RICH AND VERY SUCCESSFUL To everyone who has serious financial problems, I am assuring you that to be born poor is not your mistake but if you die poor and leave your family suffering that is a biggest mistake. My number is 0835265579 for over 7 years I have been reading different testimonies from different people of all races thanking Asembe for changing their miserable lives. He made them rich mainly with SUPER MAGIC WALLET that lots of people are using to get money everyday and weekly and they then pay back a weekly amount to Asembe. There is a lot of people with testimonies about Super Magic Wallet. I was on the verge of a financial breakdown because of fake prophets, doctors, herbalists and sangomsa that I have consulted before but they kept on asking more money without any results. I chose the short boys from Asembe to put money in my account, I was also 100% ssure that he was going to help me just like the way he has helped a lot of other people. He promised me that the money will be in my account the next day. I was so suprised in the morning when I received a bank sms that a lot of money was deposited in my account. I went to withdraw the money and I paid him 40% from that money. I am now an independent woman, I started my transport business using the money form Asembe. My husband is also planning to start his own business after getting SUPER RATS from Asembe to put money in the house. Dont lose hope, I promise and guarantee you that no matter how deep your financial problems are take a chance and call Asembe and he will help you with the best results. he also specialises with Power ball & LOTTO, my friend won the lotto through lucky numbers given by Asembe and he paid 30% to him. Dont waste your time, remember to be born poor is not your fault but if you die poor that is your biggest mistake. Just Call Asembe to make you rich and successful CALL 083 526 5579

New Crossland X model joins Opel family REPORTER
hance wheel location without resorting to overly stiff spring rates and damper settings. The rear uses a semi-independent torsion beam axle. Wheel sizes vary from 15- to 17-inch depending on the model. Steering duties are handled by electrically-assisted rack and pinion. The turning circle is just 10.7m.
WITH the introduction of the new Crossland X, Opel now has a powerful presence in the B-SUV segment, the fastest-growing part of the local market which has seen volumes tripling in the last four years. The Crossland X will be a great addition, complementing the MOKKA X. The Crossland X is a more family-oriented vehicle. Four models, three trim grades and manual and automatic options will give it broad appeal to those who have a young family and want a car which can grow with them. Key features include: . Urban crossover vehicle ideally priced and positioned for a growing family; . Generous luggage space and seating flexibility married to compact footprint; . Premium feel at value-for-money prices; . Advanced multimedia systems; . Widest range of standard and optional ADAS systems; . Zesty and efficient three-cylinder petrol engines; . Four derivatives and three trim levels. Design and styling The Crossland X measures just over 4.2m and has a wheelbase of 2.6m, making it one of the largest in its class. However, the Opel designers have successfully disguised this fact, giving it short overhangs, steeply-raked windscreen and sculptured flanks that elegantly break up the sheet metal. The floating roof – available in contrasting colours in the Cosmo – also has the effect of reducing the height while the rear aerofoil extends the rear roofline for a flowing effect. Taking pride of place in a generously-proportioned grille is the Opel ‘blitz’ with chrome winglets extending outward. The large light clusters are fitted with LED daylight running lamps, which follow the grille detailing outwards and upwards and then ‘hook’ around the upper extremity of the light clusters. The body perimeter is surrounded by tough, black plastic cladding, adding width to the wheel arches and also giving the effect of blacking out the sills to lower the stance. Rear light clusters are high mounted and distinctive, with the lenses mirroring the double wing design used in front. The Cosmo stands out from its stablemates thanks to 17-inch wheels and front and rear skid plates, and integrated roof rails.
Advanced driver assistance features Opel’s strategy to “democratise” technology starts with the advanced safety features that are available in the Opel range. All drivers – not just those of expensive derivatives or premium brands - deserve to have as many advanced safety and driver assistance systems available to them. These include cruise control with speed limiter; hill start assist; LED daytime running lights; front, side, rear and head airbags; auto-on headlights and traffic sign recognition. In the Crossland X Owners can look forward to a choice of intuitive 7- or 8-inch touch screens which once synced, mirror one’s smartphone - whether it be Apple or Android. The new Opel Crossland X caters specifically to a family's needs. Interior The Crossland X has raised seating, which gives the driver a commanding view of the environment, while also providing the other occupants with a pleasingly complete view of the world. As well as being staggered, the rear seats also collapse deftly to the floor to create an interior volume which will make bulk shopping trips a breeze. Maximum luggage compartment length is just shy of 1.5 metres and even with the rear seats in use that important dimension is 793mm. There are 29 litres of closed storage compartments in the boot, most of it in the form of an underfloor compartment. Seats are of a particularly supportive design and are ergonomically certified. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (full climate control in the Cosmo) controls have been kept separate from the touch screen. Multifunction steering wheels and a prominent driver information cluster in the instrument binnacle play a further role in reducing driver load and allowing for maximum focus on the road. The former has a power output of 60kW and 118Nm; the latter figure reached at just 2 750rpm. The turbopetrol version is fitted to all but the entry-level model and with 81kW and 205Nm, performance and response is lively while consumption and emissions remain modest. Overall fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are 5.2F/100km and 116 grams/km, and 4.8F/100km and 109 grams/km for nonturbo and turbo versions respectively. In both instances, engine efficiency is enhanced with features like start/stop control, low rolling resistance tyres, a radiator grille shutter which maximises aerodynamic efficiency when cruising and low viscosity lubricants. Transmission options are a five-speed manual and for the range’s flagship, the 1.2T Cosmo Automatic, a six-speed auto with manual selection via the sequential lever gate. Local teams fly NMB flag high at the weekend SELBY MADIKANE
SUBS defeated City Lads 2-1 in front of their home supporters at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium. The three league points seemed to have lifted the spirits of the SUBS players who had a shaky start to the league season. Sibanye FC, the new kids on the block, also defeated FC Buffalo 2-1 at Gelvandale Stadium.
SWARTKOPSVALLEY United Brothers (SUBS) and Sibanye FC kept the Nelson Mandela Bay flag flying high when both accumulated their three maximum league points in their respective matches at the weekend.
Sibanye FC have proven to be a good side that keeps the hopes of the supporters alive by maintaining their status in the league. Unfortunately, Lion City continued with their dismal performance after they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Bizana Pondo Chiefs in Mbhizana. Highbury FC were handed a huge 4-0 loss
by Spears FC, while PE Stars FC were hammered in an away 3-0 defeat by Tornado FC in East London. Other ABC Motsepe League results: Matta Milan 1-1 Future Tigers Mthatha City 3-2 EC Bees Try Again 0-3 Butterworth FC

game ended 1-1, while Wits shared a hardfought 2-2 draw with Thohoyandou. Wits FC won the game 3-2 in a penalty shootout. On the second day, AC Milan FC thwarted Mayaya FC 3-0, while Madibaz advanced to the semi-finals after eliminating Amavarara FC 2-0 on penalties following their full-time 1-1 draw. Madibaz lost 3-1 on penalties to Wits after
they shared a 1-1 full-time draw in the semi-finals. AC Milan went down 3-2 on penalties as well to Mighty Swallows after their game ended in a hard-fought 1-1 draw. In the finals, Wits FC defeated Mighty Swallows 3-1 on penalties after they drew 1-1 in regulation time. According to Safa EC secretary Isaac Klaas, Wits will take on EC Bees on December 9. Fairview Rovers salvaged a hard-earned 1-0 win against Golden Aces at Saints Grounds on Saturday. To the dismay of game supporters, only one official was available for the match that was meant to take place between Young Ideas and Despatch Pioneers at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday. The match was postponed.
TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE
Bottas steps up in Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to end his season on a high note IN the blink of an eye, the 2017 F1 season has flown by and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has brought the curtain down on another Formula 1 season. The 55 laps around the Yas Marina circuit may not have delivered the most exciting race that’s been seen this year. Still, there were several important things to take away from the season finale. Not least of all was the performance of race winner Valtteri Bottas. It’s nearly 12 months ago now that Bottas was catapulted into the Mercedes team following Nico Rosberg’s surprise retirement from the sport. The Finn started the season well enough but faded, dramatically, from contention in the second half of the year. His issues centered on the tyres the team said, but it was evident that mentally he wasn’t on the level of the championship contenders. Candidly, Bottas revealed that he’d final-
ly found ‘something’ in himself that aided his mental preparation during the Grand Prix weekend. It came together beautifully for him in Abu Dhabi as he first beat Hamilton to pole and then absorbed everything his fourtime champion teammate could throw at him. And he did so on merit too. He won’t only take an enormous amount of confidence from this win but also the knowledge that he can beat his teammate in a straight fight. All that remains now is for him to do over an entire season. No pressure Valtteri. While the two Mercs cruised up front, Sebastian Vettel was confined to third, some 20 seconds off the pace. It was a rather lacklustre performance from Ferrari who never posed any threat to Mercedes in Abu Dhabi. Nevertheless, Vettel finished a remote third and for what it’s worth takes second place in the driver’s championship stand-

ings. Despite Ferrari’s many mistakes and issues in 2017, they seem intent to commit ridiculous strategy calls to the very end. In a move that probably seemed like a good idea at the time, a decision was made to underfuel Kimi Raikkonen’s car. Ultimately, it meant the Finn was reduced to fuel-saving for almost the entire race. Besides the obvious time and focus Ferrari will have to invest in solving their reliability issues, it’s clear that many other aspects of the team need to be, at the very least, rebuilt. It wasn’t a great day for Red Bull either as the Austrian team’s season ended with a bit of a fizzle. While Daniel Ricciardo was forced into retirement with a hydraulic failure, Max Verstappen could only finish fifth. In sixth place, Nico Hulkenberg ensured that Renault leapfrogged Toro Rosso to finish sixth in the constructor’s standings. It’s an especially important result con-
sidering that Renault will receive in the region of R170 million for sixth in the standings. Elsewhere, the two Force Indias of Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon finished seventh and eighth ahead of Fernando Alonso’s McLaren in ninth. In the final race of his F1 career, Felipe Massa somehow brought his sluggish Williams home in 10th place. While no points are awarded for 11th place finisher, Romain Grosjean, the Haas driver, delivered a brilliant drive, including a stunning overtake on Lance Stroll. Sauber’s Pascal Wehrlein was equally impressive in 14th. Although the season may have officially drawn to a close, attention immediately turned to 2018 with the unveiling of a new F1 logo. The white and red logo, in use for the last 23 years, has been replaced with a more modern and dynamic design that adds some much-needed freshness. Roll on 2018.

Golf club to kick off holiday season with minifestival REPORTER WITH a beach party theme to get the summer spirit going, the Humewood Golf Club will be kicking off the holiday season on a festive note when they host the Cool Projects-Acres SPAR Mini-Festival from Friday to Sunday. Now in its fourth year, this three-day celebration will offer a number of major attractions for golfers in the region, as well as any visitors to Nelson Mandela Bay. Humewood general manager Andrew McLean said they were delighted to announce their title sponsors for the festival recently. “This is fantastic news for our programme and will go a long way towards helping us stage a quality festival of golf over the three days,” he said. “We are hugely indebted to the support given to us by Cool Projects and Acres SPAR, which was the Eastern Cape SPAR store of the year in 2017.” Topping the list of incentives during the festival will be a complimentary ordinary membership for a year to the first golfer who gets a holein-one on any of the links course’s four par-three holes. All the par-three holes have their own individ-
ual characteristics which provide a variety of challenges for the golfers. The iconic sixth hole is arguably the most testing of the lot, despite being the shortest. South African professional and two-time US Open champion Retief Goosen ranks that hole as one of his 18 favourites holes in the world, while it has jokingly been referred to as the “shortest par-five in golf”, especially when the wind starts gusting. In addition to the chance of a year’s free membership, golfers will be able play on the only true links course in South Africa for just R160 a round during the period of the mini-festival. McLean said that while regular golf attire would be required on the course, they would be promoting a relaxed beach-style party off the course. “The theme for the event is in line with the season,” McLean said. “Baggies, slops and any other beach wear will be acceptable in and around the clubhouse during the event.” Humewood will be providing several formats over the three days, with morning and afternoon competitions. They will also be promoting a family day on the Sunday. Preference will be given to mixed teams, in-
Andile Motwana wins Uitenhage Carnival Race REPORTER ANDILE Motwana, from Tinarha Athletics Club, and Ntombesinthu Mfunzi, of Nedback Running Club, were the winners of the 10km Uitenhage Carnival Race which took place on Saturday. The 5km and 10km races formed part of the 30th annual two-day Uitenhage Carnival, which attracted more than 38 000 people. Uitenhage Rotary Club member and street carnival organiser, Greg Adams, said one of the highlights was when Cape Town teenager Paxton Fielies, the Idols SA 2017 winner, took to the stage on Friday. “It was her first performance after being crowned the Idols winner, and she broke into tears when she was warmly welcomed by the crowds.” The street carnival has opened up opportunities for local artists to showcase their talents, Adams said.
