Death threats on councillors investigated Recruitment THANDI SETOKOE
THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip, has said that the DA and its councillors will not be intimidated. This after two senior DA councillors, chief whip Werner Senekal and mayoral committee member Rano Kayser, received verified death threats via SMS. The mayor said, “We want to put it on record that we’re not going to take the threats lightly and that we are going to do everything in our power to get to the bottom of this. “We took a decision to make a public statement about this because what we really want to achieve is to bring the conspirators to book as soon as possible,” he said. He added that the threats could potentially be linked to the cases that were opened by Senekal and Kayser against ANC councillors, Andile Lungisa and Gamalihleli Maqula, aft-

er they were assaulted during a violent brawl during a council meeting in October last year. It is alleged that Maqula stabbed Senekal in the back with a sharp object, while Lungisa apparently hit Kayser with a glass jug over his head. The mayor said he had written to the Eastern Cape Premier and the MEC for Safety and Security informing them of the situation, particularly in the light of the murder of the Raymond Mhlaba Municipality speaker, ANC councillor, Thozama Njobe, who was gunned down for reportedly standing in the way of corruption. “When the speaker from Nkonkobe was threatened, she told the secretary of the ANC about the threats and about a week later she was killed. “So, I want to put it on record that there are now two more councillors and in a constitutional democracy it is untenable to have to deal with this kind of stuff.” Speaking to Express, Trollip said he could

not divulge too much while the police investigation was continuing, however, he said that “the information is that there are people who have been sent to carry out the execution of the two councillors”. Trollip also confirmed that security had been tightened around the mayoral committee members. “There are precautions that have been put into place, both the councillors have got security details attached to them to monitor their security. “I fully regret that my colleagues have been put into such vulnerable positions. It’s not easy to continue working after receiving death threats,” Trollip said. ANC spokesperson Gift Nqondi said the party rejects the DA’s insinuations regarding the death threats. “The DA Coalition must stop these reckless statements of insinuating that our Councillors are involved in these so-called death threats without any tangible evidence. “We have condemned the council fracas that took place last year and for the DA to cite that incident as the motive for the threats is irresponsible and childish,” Nqondi said. He added that violent conduct or death threats had no place in democracy. The SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said that police “have opened an inquiry and the matter is being investigated”.

Mandela Bay is currently facing severe water shortages due to a prolonged drought and is also grappling with fresh water leakages across the Metro. This puts the metro in a dire situation as its water reserves continue to be depleted with no immediate and meaningful rainfall relief in the immediate future. Artisan plumbers form part of the core team that fixes water leaks in the metro and also ensures the reduction of turnaround times in fixing these leaks. The current turnaround time to fix small leaks is between 15-20 working days. As such, the metro has moved swiftly by employing an additional seven plumbers. It is envisaged that their recruitment will immediately reduce turnaround times drastically. The metro’s organogram structure consists of 51 artisan plumber teams. Currently, a total of 27 plumbers are in the system and there is a total of 24 plumbing vacancies. Once the recruitment process has been completed, the new recruits will bring the number of artisan plumbers to 34 and the vacancy figure to 17.

drive to find more artisan plumbers
“We are taking back our roads from lawlessness and the general disregard for traffic laws with the start of a duly authorised Metro Police ghost squad on the Nelson Mandela Bay roads,” said member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security John Best last Thursday. “We took a lot of criticism but could not have this unit on the roads any sooner as it was crucial to follow due process. “The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) first had to approve the unit, which took months, and the officers were trained to operate the on-board cameras effectively to avoid legal loopholes for transgressors. “Within three hours of starting, officers pulled over an overloaded taxi and the driver was charged for contravening Regulation 233 1 (b) of the National Road Traffic Act, which means he must now answer for his inconsiderate driving and overloading the vehicle. When officers pulled the Toyota minibus over in the vicinity of Chase Drive and Ditchling Street, a total of 43 high school children were crammed into the taxi. “This means the vehicle was overloaded with an unbelievable 27 children,” Best said. The four ghost squad vehicles from the Metro Police is in addition to one covert vehicle from the Traffic Department, which brings the tally of unmarked vehicles to five.

Adcock Old Age Home gets revamp worth R1.5 million THANDI SETOKOE THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) has officially reopened the Adcock Old Age Home in Korsten following extensive renovations worth R1.5 million. The refurbishments which began in November last year and continued until March this year included plumbing, fixing and painting the building and ceiling, and replacing the doors and burglar bars. NMBM Executive Mayor Athol Trollip explained that the programme is targeted at protecting the dignity of the elderly citizens through inte-
grated and sustainable human settlements. Speaking at the opening the mayor said, “In the past there was a lot of controversy around the management of these old age homes – complaints regarding the maintenance of the homes and people paying for services they weren’t getting. “The state of this home before the renovations took place is a testimony to neglect, maladministration and mismanagement which we hope will end today.” He added that in as much as they are pleased with the work done, there is still room for improvement. “The elders would still like some other things such as recreational facilities and vegetable gar-

dens. We will make sure that we budget so that there is dignified living space for our aged because these are the people who have sacrificed their whole lives not only to give birth to us and educate grandchildren, but they have given so much to this country, therefore, we need to take care of them,” Trollip said. Speaking to Express, Agnus Bulani-Williams (67), a resident at Adcock, described the state of the home before the revamping. “It was horrific. I have been living here for the past eight years. This place used to be filled with cockroaches.” She added that they feared for their safety as the premises were not secured, “We now have peace of mind.” The mayor assured that the programme will continue to other old age homes. “This is ongoing work and if other old age homes were missed this year, then they will be put into next year’s budget.” He confirmed that currently work is being done at the Elizabeth Stuurman Old Age Home. “As soon as that work is completed we will go and hand it over as well. “My team has taken personal interest in making sure that every rand that we spend on upgrading these homes is going to have 100 cents worth of value in improving their lives. I’m happy that they will spend the money appropriately and that whatever upgrades they do will bring dignity to the people who live there,” Trollip said.
Mayor Athol Trollip planted one tree at the garden of the home to symbolise that the elderly's wishes have been answered.

Hospital celebrates Christmas in July with oncology patients REPORTER
tient care, the ward environment and ward staff with minimal interruption and risk to patient care. The stress levels of patients drop as the dogs enter the room to provide comfort, entertainment, distraction, relief and a unique form of interaction with the patients. This is an effective tool for supplementing other forms of clinical intervention, care and rehabilitation therapies. Therapy dogs are specially screened for temperament and have to pass an international test before qualifying as a therapy dog. Regional manager of the Eastern Cape, Bruce Janssens, said, “Life Healthcare’s purpose is to make life better and, when we can, to arrange events like these to brighten up a patient’s hospital stay. “I am extremely proud of the effort and care that has gone into this special event.”
LIFE St George’s Hospital celebrated Christmas in July with patients in the oncology ward last week. The Cedar Ward oncology unit was decorated in festive decorations, including white Christmas trees, snowflakes and fairy lights. The hospital staff, laboratories and medical firms united to make the week extra special for the patients with hand-knitted blankets and cakes made by the staff in the unit and donations of pudding, bed socks and beanies. Specially trained therapy dogs also visited each patient, while the staff handed out gifts. According to Yolandi Shaw, Marketing and Communications Co-ordinator - Port Elizabeth Region of the Life Health Care Group, dog therapy is proven to produce a positive impact on pa-

stalls as well as a children’s play area. “Come down with your furry friend and enjoy a morning of outdoor activity for a good cause. The Animal Anti-Cruelty League does tremendous good work to protect, care for and rehabilitate animals that are neglected and abused. “Just think, you can do something to improve the quality of life for a needy animal and make your pet happy at the same time. “Your medal won’t be shiny and bright. Instead it will be a feeling inside, where you know you have done right,” said Siphokazi Ngombane, public relations and promotions manager at The Boardwalk. All dogs must be on a leash to participate in the walk. People who would like to ‘adopt’ a dog to take for a walk can contact Amanda on 082 492 2744 for more information.
THE Boardwalk teams up with the Animal Anti-Cruelty League for the Walk of Hope – in aid of abused and neglected animals – on Saturday. The community is called to bring along their beloved pets for a fun-filled, 5km stroll from The Boardwalk. If you don’t have a pet to bring along, you can “adopt” an animal for the morning to enjoy the spirited meander. All proceeds raised through entry fees will be donated to the Animal Anti-Cruelty League in Port Elizabeth. The mass dog walk will start from The Boardwalk parking area at 9am. The entry fee is R40 per person. The fun and festivities will continue throughout the morning with an array of food X1TRU0YH-PX020817

Teens excel in bridge building REPORTER THE South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) presented its third annual bridge building competition in Port Elizabeth during the July school holidays.
Ntadonkazi Baxana (18), Sonwabiso Nyanga (18) and Litha Nohashe (17) show off the bridge designs of their teams during the third annual SANRAL bridge building competition. PHOTO:SUPPLIED
The event was hosted at SANRAL Southern Region’s Road Materials Testing Lab in Struandale, in conjunction with Unity in Africa Foundation’s Incubating Great Engineering Minds (iGEMs), a leadership development incubator and education to employment programme. The SANRAL bridge building competition was one of a series of workshops, site visits and projects during the July school holiday for the iGEMs learners. Around 34 academically deserving Grade 11 and 12 pupils from disadvantaged and socioeconomic vulnerable backgrounds from 18 schools in Nelson Mandela Bay participated in the competition. The event offered a glimpse into the world of civil engineering but also allowed learners to put their creativity,
team skills and future engineering skills to the test. Based on the format and rules of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering’s (SAICE) bridge building competition, learners had to design and then build model bridges using only wooden sticks, rope and glue in a limited time following functional specifications and construction methods. The bridges were judged on aesthetics, weight and structural strength. In relation to the latter, suspended weights literally stretched the bridges to breaking point in an ultimate showdown between the 10 teams. Litha Nohashe from Motherwell is a pupil from Woolhope High School who is eager to become an entrepreneur which will help him to reverse the situation of his family at home one day, he said. “Civil engineering is interesting and I strongly recommend it to those who think it is boring. The bridge building competition surprised me because I am not a creative person. “The event opened my eyes in terms of understanding my character and the way I do things.”
“As the world goes on, things have to be developed to keep with times. “Engineers are the ones responsible for that. Everything revolves around engineering if you think about it. We are the people that make everyone’s lives easier,” he said. Sonwabiso Nyanga, a learner from Newton Technical High School and resident of Kwa-Dwesi, said the competition was an eye opening event. “For me, the event was an eye-opener because I was not sure which career to choose. So, by doing things practically it was fun to see what goes into building and the materials you have to take into account. “Engineering is a very vast career field because you can see how things are developing. More technology is used and engineering guarantees that there is something to do and something to look forward to because we are moving the world forward,” she said. SANRAL announced that later this month it will host an induction event for the scholarships and bursaries that will be awarded to learners in the Eastern Cape.
NAPDI programme to resume this Saturday THE Second Chance Matric Programme of the Northern Areas People Development Initiative (NAPDI) will resume with registration at Hillside High School on Saturday . Coordinator of the programme and NAPDI chairman Isaac Metembo said that the board of trustees of NAPDI was excited that the programme would continue to give adults and youth another opportunity to get the
important matric qualification. “We are very proud of this programme that has helped so many breadwinners since 2011 to get matric and so improve their chances at finding permanent employment, as well as making it possible for a few to enrol at university,” said Metembo. “More than 300 adults attending the NAPDI Tuition Programme sat for the recently completed Extended
Matric Certificate Examination, offered annually by the Education Department at no cost. “We are confident many of them will pass and return to complete their last three subjects while others will complete and receive their certificates later in the year.” Prospective students must report to Hillside High School on Saturday at 7:30am for a full briefing. – REPORTER

Auditions for Clover Showtime Awards Revue shortly REPORTER AUDITIONS for the 2018 edition of Nelson Mandela Bay’s top family song and dance show of the year, the 28th annual Clover Showtime Awards young talent development revue will take place at Charlo Primary School during August. On Saturday, August 12, starting at 1.30pm, singers and actors will be auditioned while, on Sunday, August 13 from 2.30pm, they will return, together with specialist dancers (tap dancers should bring tap shoes), for the movement and dance tryouts. The show Let the Good Times Roll will run, in collaboration with the PE Musical and Dramatic Society, in the Little Theatre from January 22-27, next year, with all performances in theatre seating style. The Junior Clover Awards Ceremonies will be held on Tuesday, January 23 for high and primary school productions and the main awards on Friday, January 26, both at 7pm. Rehearsals will start in early October, concurrent with the week of the school holidays and continue over all subsequent Saturday mornings and weekend afternoons, until December 2 and 3, and then cease for resumption on Tuesday, January 2, next year.
As with all its predecessors, this revue has been devised and written - in yet another distinctive style, by executive producer Bob Eveleigh, who created the Showtime concept 27 years ago while arts editor of the Evening and Weekend Post, who is once more joined by the same production team as 2017’s A Grand Night for Singing, Marlene Pieterse, Wayne Hughes and Siobhan Day. But there will be one major change this year with Siobhan, who staged the dance numbers last year, taking over as both director (in her adult theatre debut) and choreographer of all the song numbers and dance and company routines, except for tap, which will be staged by Simone Buchner of Ellen Bunting Dance Studio. Marlene will be mentoring Siobhan, as she did in 2016 with Marelize Barnard handling Pansa Eastern Cape’s Bat Boy, while Wayne is again the musical and vocal director on his sixth Clover Showtime revue outing, with Lance Bright and Rocky Mann once more functioning as technical consultants. The team will be seeking a fully multicultural core cast of 12 performers – eight females and four males – essentially within the usual Showtime development ages of 14 (turning 15 before January 27) to 22 years, with as many all-rounders (singers/actors/dancers)
; Siobhan Day will direct the Clover Showtime 2018 Revue, Let the Good Times Roll, for the first time as well as choreographing the show in the Pemads Little Theatre in January. PHOTO:SUPPLIED
as possible included, plus a dance troupe of six girls, who also will be required to sing in ensemble numbers in the show. They will again be supported by a group of ten pupils from Charlo Primary School, who will not, however, be selected at these auditions but separately at school by Wayne Hughes. The musical score and comedy will salute the 1950s, a decade that has come to be known as the brightest in US showbiz history, including numbers made famous by such stars as Teresa Brewer, Patti Page, Doris Day Julie London, Connie Francis and many others,
while the males include Pat Boone, Elvis Presley, Sammy Davis Junior, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. The Broadway and Hollywood hits to be saluted include Singin’ in the Rain, The Bandwagon, My Fair Lady, The Pajama Game, West Side Story and Bye Bye Birdie, a 1960s Great White Way success that will also be featured. The period also saw the initial birth of rock ‘n roll by such stars as Bill Haley and his Comets, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, Presley and Boone and also featured the start of Frank Sinatra’s amazing second rise to fame, while the comedy gems come from the oneliners of the likes of ‘50s headliners Bob Hope, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, Sammy Davis Junior, Groucho Marx and Phyllis Diller. For the auditions singers, who may bring their own backing tracks or perform with their own accompanists (or sing a cappella), should also particularly acquaint themselves – most easily via Youtube – with the songs of the decade but will all be taught one of these at the tryouts. For more information about the auditions or any aspect of Clover Showtime 2018: Let the Good Times Roll email Bob Eveleigh at beveleigh@centrestage.co.za.or call him (all hours) on 083 452 7556.

More hands needed for beach cleanup REPORTER WESSA Algoa Bay branch invites the public to a beach clean-up at Cape Recife on Saturday from 9.30am to 10.30am. Efforts will be combined with SANCCOB (the old SAMREC) Little Blues Club beach clean-up. To get to the area where the clean-up will be held, coming from Summerstrand, you turn left off Marine Drive towards Pine Lodge. Drive past Pine Lodge and stop at the boom which is the entrance to the Cape Recife Nature Reserve.
Tell the security person there that you are participating in the WESSA/SANCCOB beach clean-up. Drive to the SANCCOB parking area and park. There will be someone there to direct you when you arrive. If you park at SANCCOB, you will not need a permit to enter the reserve. If you drive beyond SANCCOB, you will need to obtain a permit. This will be WESSA Algoa Bay’s fifth cleanup this year and the public’s assistance is crucial in this matter. Phone Tim or Isobel Douglas-Jones on 082 775 8816 for more information.

Ek is Lerato.

ARE YOU FRUSTRATED AND DEPRESSED FINANCIALLY (DON'T lose faith, give Prof Hope a try)
Strongest Healer
My name is Reuben, am 48 years old, I stay with 4 children, for a very long time there was no happiness in my life, even my wife left me because I couldn't support my own family. I had to look after my parents. I was the only breadwinner in our family and I was working as care giver. I struggled financially my kids needed school uniforms, my parents needed help with basic needs as they are elderly. I visited different pastors, prophets and traditional healers with no one could help me. I wasted all the money, but no results, I just kept losing the little I had. I was helpless for many years, until I read a testimony of Gabriel who was testifying the good work Prof Hope did to change his life by using Short boys to put money into his account. I made an appointment with him he explained to me all the options like money rats to put money in the house on same day, short boys to put money in your Account on same day, magic ring to win money games like gambling, casino, lotto and betting. Magic wallet to multiply your money. I chose money rats to put money in my house. He explained to me the process, I couldn't believe when I received the money on the same day. I immediately contacted him and paid him 25% and my sister chose magic ring for lotto and we are financially stable, all thanks to Prof Hope. Also helps with: bring back lost lover, family matters, bring back stolen goods, bind y o u r p r o p e r t y, m a l e enlargement. Home visits AROUND Eastern Cape.

EXPRESS ON WHEELS: BETTIE GILIOMEE
Plenty of features to Enjoy in Mokka X’s base model OPEL has recently launched its new Mokka X range in South Africa, where the X in the name is the new global identifier for future Opel SUV and crossover vehicles. There are four models with two specification levels in the range starting with the Enjoy and moving up to the higher spec Cosmo. While both spec levels are available with manual and automatic transmissions, they are all powered by the same engine, the 103 kW 1.4 litre turbocharged ECOTEC petrol engine, which produces 103 kW between 4 900 and 6 000 rpm and 200 Nm between 1 850 and 4 900 rpm.
ing, making it easy to load cargo. The back seats folds flat in a 60/40 split.
Enjoy spec levels: For this week’s Express on Wheels the model test-driven was the lower spec Enjoy. And even though it is a lower spec version, one will be pleasantly surprised with the specs that are offered in this model. The Enjoy has 17 inch alloy wheels, while the Cosmo comes with 19 inch alloy wheels. The Enjoy also boasts steering wheel audio controls, speed sensitive power steering and a leather steering wheel. As far as the headlamps are concerned, it has fog lamps (front and rear), LED daytime running lamps and automatic headlight control. The Cosmo has extra the active high beam assist. The Enjoy’s seats are clad in cloth, while this makes way for leather in the Cosmo. Also impressive is the number of convenience features that is standard in the Enjoy, such as electronic climate control, cruise control, speed limiter control as well as electric, heated and foldable side mirrors. The convenience features
with which the Cosmo is upgraded are rain sensor wipers, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, reverse camera and park assistance. The Enjoy shares all the same safety and security features as the high spec model, which includes, among others, ESP, hill start assist, driver and passenger airbags, front seat side airbags and curtain airbags, as well as an anti-theft alarm and immobiliser. As far as the infotainment system is concerned, the Enjoy model has a radio/CD frontloader with Bluetooth/USB/MP3/Aux input. The Cosmo specification gains the Intellilink Infotainment system. Exterior: The most significant exterior change in the Mokka X is the new headlight clusters, now with
Formation flying for Ferrari THE Hungaroring was always a circuit slated to suit the characteristics of the 2017 Ferrari and the Italian team drove home their advantage with a controlled one-two victory. As in Saturday qualifying, the Ferrari driver pair of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen were line astern in first and second at lights out. As the pair cleanly led at lights out, the Mercedes duo, Bottas and Hamilton, had their hands full of fast starting Red Bulls. However, while the initial start went relatively well, Max Verstappen clouted the side of his teammate, Daniel Ricciardo, in a clash that would ultimately come with a hefty price. The coming together put Ricciardo out of the race while Verstappen incurred a 10-second stop/go penalty for his part in the incident. While Verstappen’s move was rather silly there was clearly no intention on his part, which made the penalty somewhat harsh. Initially, the pace set by Vettel and Raikkonen was much too quick for Bottas to live with
who quickly fell seven seconds behind in the opening stint. Vettel too seemed to have the measure of Raikkonen in the opening laps, but as the race drew towards its pitstop phase, the Finn was clearly the quickest of the two Ferrari’s and easily maintained a second gap to his race-leading teammate. Despite the track temperature soaring in the mid-50 degree range and fears of increased tyre degradation, the Pirelli compounds held up well, perhaps a bit too well. It’s no secret that Pirelli’s approach to the manufacture and construction of their 2017 tyres has been conservative. It is this conservatism that has led to drivers being able to make one stop per race. It is likely that Pirelli’s conservative approach stems from an apprehension that the quicker, and heavier, 2017 cars needed more robust tyre construction. Here’s hoping that with all the data gathered this season that 2018 sees a malleable range of compounds. While Vettel wrapped up the 46th victory of his career, it was clear that he was not the fastest Ferrari driver on the day. For the majority

of the second half of the race teammate Raikkonen ran within a second off the leader clearly illustrating his superior pace. But as the Hungaroring is notorious for lack of overtaking second, is what the Finn was confined to. It didn’t make for a comfortable afternoon for Ferrari though as both Mercs of Bottas and Raikkonen started closing down the leading pair at a rate of knots. There was a suggestion that Ferrari swap Vettel and Raikkonen so as to ensure a comfortable victory, but this move never happened. Contrary to many on social media, who slated Ferrari’s unwillingness to swap its drivers around, it was the right move. The reality of the team orders debate is that you can’t have it both ways. In Monaco, Ferrari handing Vettel the optimum strategy and ultimately the race win was rightly criticised. If this was unacceptable from Ferrari, it shouldn’t have been accepted, or called for, in Hungary either. While it ended well for Ferrari in Hungary, Mercedes and Hamilton would’ve won a few more fans with the spirit they displayed. On the instruction of the team, Bottas had let Hamilton, with better pace, through to third with the aim of catching the Ferrari pair and giving back the place if he couldn’t do so. However, by the start of the final lap Bottas
was seven seconds adrift and under pressure from a recovering Verstappen. Nevertheless, Hamilton, in a superb show of sportsmanship, slowed significantly in the final corner to return Bottas’ third place. While Hamilton gave up three points by finishing fourth, his move has earned respect. Verstappen, apologetic after the race for the clash with his teammate, eventually finished fifth. Amazingly, Fernando Alonso set the fastest lap of the race and finished a solid sixth ahead of Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz in seventh. The Force India drivers continued to keep each other honest with Sergio Perez in eighth and Esteban Ocon in ninth as the second McLaren of Stoffel Vandoorne scored the final point in 10th. Williams’ Felipe Massa’s withdrawal from the Hungarian GP with an inner ear issue meant that reserve driver Paul di Resta was subbed in almost literally at the last minute. While he ultimately retired with an oil leak, the Williams reserve driver did his reputation no harm with a measured performance in a car he’d never driven before. The majority of the 70 laps of the Hungarian GP were nervy for Ferrari, but they emerged with an important one-two finish. It allows Sebastian Vettel to stem Mercedes’ momentum and to take a crucially 14-point lead into the month-long break.

Manchester Utd take Liverpool to the cleaners SELBY MADIKANE MANCHESTER United took Liverpool to the cleaners when they thumped them 5-0 in their Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Premier League clash which was played at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday. Following their 5-0 loss to SUBS on Friday, Liverpool looked as if they had gone back to the drawing board, but that was not going to cut it. Liverpool managed to claw back into the game, but their forwards failed to convert their few golden scoring opportunities. Manchester’s star player, Ayabonga Tofile, opened the scoring charter with a top-notch goal late in the first half. Manchester, who are affectionately called Amarhamba by their supporters, maintained their 1-0 lead until halftime. Amarhamba head coach Mzikayise Mzido Kelemane came up with a new game plan in the second half. Manchester played running football. As a result, Liverpool’s defence was hor-
rendous and jittery. Aphelele Tshoni scored Manchester’s second goal after a solo run that was produced by Tofile down the right flank. Tofile rounded the defence and the goalkeeper and scored his second goal. Amarhamba then increased their lead to 3-0. Manchester’s maestro, Xolani Jonas, was rewarded with a spectacular goal that increased the scoreline to 4-0. Nkululeko Oyisisi scored a last goal for Manchester that sealed the game at 5-0. On Sunday Manchester thrashed Young Ideas 5-1 at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium. As things stand, Amarhamba are now at the top of the MOFA Premier League log table. Highbury Ladies register biggest scores in double header SELBY MADIKANE SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Women’s Regional League Stream A log leaders Highbury Ladies registered their biggest score during their two games that took place at the weekend. In Bridgemeade, Highbury Ladies embarrassed the NMU Madibaz when they defeated them 7-1 on Saturday. Highbury added more worries to the hapless Motherwell side, Tomorrow Stars, whom they humiliated 9-0 at Motherwell NU 11 Sta-
dium on Sunday afternoon. So far, Highbury Ladies are the most formidable side in Stream A and it appears as though no side can stop them. In another game, Vuku Wanderers suffered a huge 5-0 defeat against Warriors at Stinging Bees Ground in their Stream A game. KUBS handed a well-deserved 2-0 defeat to Hearts, while NMU Madibaz redeemed themselves when they claimed an easy 6-0 victory from KUBS. PE United also bagged a 2-0 win over Hearts.
In the SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay Women’s Regional League Stream B clash, Dower United hammered Walmer Ladies 10-0 in their scrappy affair that was played at Dower Campus Ground. Zwide All Stars were caught by surprise in a 2-1 loss to Volcano FC in their game that took place at Zwide Stadium on Sunday. Young Aces snatched a 2-0 win from the underperforming Kuyga Ladies. Rainbow Stars lost 2-0 to Bodene Women Soccer Club, while Golden Stars went down 2-0 to Park United.

Standard Bank 5150 Triathlon returns to the Bay REPORTER FOLLOWING the huge success of last year’s inaugural race, the Standard Bank 5150 Nelson Mandela Bay returns to the Friendly City for a second time. Set to take place at Kings Beach on December 3 this year, online entries are already open. Home to the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship, the 5150 Nelson Mandela Bay saw just over 600 athletes at the start of the debut race last year. The 5150 triathlon (pronounced, fifty-onefifty) takes the format of an Olympic distance
triathlon featuring a 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10km run. Widely regarded as an ideal introduction distance into competitive triathlon, it is also a favourite among fans of the Port Elizabeth based Corporate Triathlon Challenge competitors. The Standard Bank 5150 Nelson Mandela Bay course starts with a 1.5km sea swim at Kings Beach, leading into a 40km out and back bike route on Marine Drive, ending the race with a 10km run along the beachfront. Last year Port Elizabeth-born athlete and runner-up at this year’s Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3 Durban, Jeren Seegers,
crossed the finish line first, setting the course time at 02:03:06. Setting the tone for the women’s field, the well-known amateur age group athlete Kelly van der Toorn was the fastest female on the day in a time of 02:18:37. Besides the Olympic distance, this year’s event will see the introduction of the new Funtri distance. The Funtri is a shorter distance, especially designed to give the younger, first-time athlete a glimpse into the spectacular tri-world. Featuring a 400-metre swim, 20km cycle and 5km run, the Funtri sets the scene for a fast-paced individual race. The same Funtri distance also welcomes team entries
Madibaz athletes to fly flag at World Student Games THREE Nelson Mandela University studentathletes have been included in the University Sport South Africa team to compete in the World Student Games next month. Bestmed Madibaz field competitors Ischke Senekal (discus and shot put) and Kelly Kingwill (long and triple jump) will join long-distance runner Mariano Eesou in the national squad for the event in Chinese Taipei, which starts on August 19. They form part of a USSA delegation of 180 sportsmen and -women who will be competing in 10 sporting codes at the 29th edition of the competition. Madibaz Sport athletics manager Nellis Bothma said it was the first time they had three athletes in the national squad. “We are very proud of our athletes and this is a great opportunity for them to show what they can do at an international level,” he said. “Our ladies, in particular, have been excellent this year, where the team came second in the university championships.”
Bothma added that the athletes had been rewarded for their hard work with the USSA selection. “I also want to thank the coaches for the work they have done to ensure our athletes can compete with the best. They are helping to keep the Madibaz flag flying high.” He said he thought steeplechase athlete Cherise Sims had been unlucky not to make the team as well. Kingwill said she was thrilled to receive a chance in her final year at the varsity. She is doing her master’s in media studies. “This is really exciting for me as it is my last opportunity to represent USSA,” she said. “It’s been something of a comeback for me, as I have battled with injuries in the past three years and I have been pleasantly surprised with my results.” She added that she expected tough competition as many of the athletes who would be attending had experience of competing in inter-
from athletes 15 years and older. For more information and to enter visit www.ironman.com/5150nelsonmandelabay.

national meetings. Eesou, who will run in the half marathon and 10 000m, will be attending his second games, hoping to improve on his previous performance in South Korea two years ago. “We were able to get a team medal (bronze) in the half marathon last time, but this year I am looking to add an individual medal to that,” said the second-year sports management student. “I am very happy to be included in the USSA team, as it is one of the biggest meetings on the world circuit.” Senekal also competed in South Korea and acknowledged that they would again face tough opposition from their peers. “The competition two years ago was very strong and I am sure it will be the same this time,” she said. “I am going in with the objective of making sure I qualify for the finals and I will then take it from there. It is a great opportunity for us to show what we can do.” – REPORTER
