Wishing all our readers and advertisers a Blessed Ramadan GO-SLOW IN REFUSE COLLECTION
Residents roll up their sleeves ANIKA DE BEER
O
WING to the go-slow in refuse collection, Port Elizabeth residents have started rolling up their sleeves and pitching in to keep their respective neighbourhoods clean. The residents of Bluewater Bay came together last week to remove the community’s refuse after Ward 60 Councillor Mvuzo Mbelekane informed them of the current go-slow within the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Waste Management department. “It causes problems if the garbage is not collected on time. Poor people come looking for food and don’t close the bags and then the dogs start tearing into it. Plastic and other things often end up the ocean as a result,” said Jenny Rump, Environmental Officer at Zwartkops Conservancy. Rump lives near Amsterdamhoek and, together with co-workers from Zwartkops Conservancy, she worked for more than an hour to collect and transport refuse to the tip. “You need gloves because it is filthy work and it stinks. People often don’t help the situation either. We should all be doing our bit to maintain a healthy environment.” Members of the Bluewater Bay Neighbourhood Watch I-Patrol also assisted in the emergency refuse removal. In Framesby residents were also surprised to
find their refuse removed on Thursday, despite the go-slow action. Local security services company Bradbury Protection Services (BPS) arranged trailers and removed all the garbage. According to BPS, “Fighting crime is not just fighting crime, but also creating an environment that is not conducive to crime.” These are not the only areas being affected. The whole of the Nelson Mandela Bay is currently experiencing the effects of the go-slow. According to NMBM spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki, normal refuse collection has been interrupted since last week due to labour-related issues. “This interruption has led to the refuse collection schedule being delayed by one to two days. The municipality is currently working tirelessly to bring the situation to normal.” According to Mniki, the metro has contingency plans in place to limit the impact of the interruption, but could not provide further details “as doing so will compromise the plan and put the lives of those involved at risk.” Meanwhile, residents are urged to place their refuse bags outside during the day and take them back inside at night should the refuse truck fail to arrive. “Those residents that can take their refuse to the nearest transfer stations are humbly requested to do so as this will assist in decreasing the backlog that currently exists.

SCHEEPERSVLAKTE-STUDAM HERVUL
Volgens haar is baie hiervan intussen her-

POPUP launches skills development centre in PE

REPORTER NON-PROFIT Organisation People Upliftment Programme (POPUP) has just launched its first skills development centre in Sidwell, which will benefit the people of Port Elizabeth. POPUP was established in 1999 and strives to empower the unemployed through training programmes offered at their skills development centres. People aged between 18 and 45, who have no tertiary education, receive training during the course of the programme. “Though candidates are not required to have even a Grade 12 certificate, they must be able to read, write, speak and understand English and be available for full-time studies,” said Louise van Heerden, manager of the POPUP skills development centre in Sidwell. The cost of the training programme is R100 per person, which includes stationary, textbooks and a meal. “The objective is to ensure that each person who commences training at POPUP completes all of the elements to ensure greater success – literacy development, skills training, job placement or enterprise development and self-sustainability,” said Van Heerden. Before entering a skills programme, each learner is required to attend a 15day Life Skills - Foundation for Life programme, which focuses on the restoration of the individual. After completing the life skills programme, learners can enroll in the

Singaphi Street unlocks vibrant township economy

REPORTER
development perspective, businesses and SMMEs near the Singaphi Street development increased turnover with 15% in the last year and that approximately 25% of surveyed businesses indicated that they were planning to make improvements to their properties in the near future versus 20% in the previous year. Both businesses and residents indicated that the overall upgrades were viewed in a highly positive light with 86.8% of all respondents indicating a positive or extremely positive response. Rosa Mdevulane, who has been living in Singaphi Street for more than 50 years, said she enjoys the upgrade in the street. “Before we had to cut the grass growing on the sidewalk in front of our houses, but since they have paved the sidewalk we don’t cut grass any more. You can see there is a change in the community since the upgrade of Singaphi Street; the children now play in the parks instead of in the street,” Mdevulane said. The total value invested by New Brighton business and residential property owners into properties over a two-year period was R8 million. Bangazi said the second phase of Singaphi Street, the gateway to the Red Location Museum, was completed by MBDA during its past financial year. Work comprised the completion of the Road from Sandla Street to 7th Street, completion of kerbs, sidewalks and landscaping, including a netball court as per designs developed by the community and realised through the Workplace Consortium. Extensive soil drains and layer work was also required to manage storm water run-off in the area.
THE R40 million Singaphi Street environmental upgrade programme in New Brighton is unlocking a vibrant township economy for the precinct, the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) announced on May 24. The Singaphi Street development is a strategic programme that creates continuity between Route 67 in the inner city and the Red Location Museum in New Brighton. The objective of this project is to develop a unique precinct and potential economic node, which can support the creative economy rooted in the art, culture and heritage of the area. “New Brighton’s Singaphi Street is seen as a catalyst project in terms of township development aligned to the public participation processes initiated in the inner city,” said Luvuyo Bangazi, MBDA spokesman. “The upgrade, which commenced in 2014, introduced new infrastructure delivery and public art programmes following MBDA’s philosophy that downstream investment, job creation and local economic development follows after public sector urban upgrading investment,” Bangazi said. Bangazi said the results of MBDA’s latest economic barometer, which includes both formal economic impact assessment evaluations and two distinct surveys polling confidence levels of businesses and residents, revealed that a higher number of property owners and residents are making improvements to business premises and residences in New Brighton. It also revealed that from a local economic
All residents and stakeholders in Nelson Mandela Bay are hereby informed that the Metro has now moved into a water emergency situation, as the combined average water levels of the Metro’s supply dams have dropped to below the critically low point of 40%. As a result, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has had no option but to introduce the more punitive Part C of the approved Schedule of Charges and Tariffs, which is applied during a water shortage emergency.

This new phase in our water situation – a water shortage emergency – underlines the need for even more focused efforts by both the Municipality and residents to save and conserve our precious remaining water. Please note that with the introduction of Part C, all rebates relating to underground/internal leaks will fall away; homeowners are therefore urged to check their water meters daily to discover the existence of any underground leaks. Previous water restrictions remain in force, such as the ban on the use of hosepipes linked to a municipal water supply. Additional stricter measures imposed, of particular important to high domestic users, contractors and borehole users, are as follows: • All domestic users using more than 40 Kℓ/m of water will be given two weeks’ notice to fix leaks or reduce their water consumption, failing which a flow meter restrictor will be installed to limit their water usage. • Apart from for concrete activities, contractors must use recycled water from the Fishwater Flats or any other approved wastewater treatment works at which disposal facilities exist. • Borehole water from trial holes will be made available free of charge for non-potable use at the Motherwell Cemetery, under strict access conditions. The volume per use will be as directed by the NMBM Executive Director: Infrastructure and Engineering. • All current and future borehole users and drilling contractors must in term of the NMBM Water and Sanitation Bylaw (Clause 83) register at the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (Infrastructure and Engineering Director: Water and Sanitation – Water Distribution). The full range of water tariffs is available on the NMBM website at www.nelsonmandelabay.gov.za It should also be noted that new annual tariff increases will be effective from 1 July 2017. Ref. 107

Fundraising event in aid of PE’s homeless furry friends ANIKA DE BEER THE staff members of Cat Box Pet Hyper will be hosting a fundraising event this Saturday, June 3, in aid of various local animal organisations. Cat Box Pet Hyper is a specialist pet food and accessories retailer located in the Heugh Road Shopping Centre. As the various organisations involved all fight for a cause that is close to their hearts, the staff members of Cat Box Pet Hyper have decided to go all out for their furry friends. “Cat Box Pet Hyper is full of people who care about customers, but more so about the pets and animals in its communities. The organisa-
tions in Port Elizabeth are the true inspiration that made us want to organise this fundraising event. We just want to be a part of the team of heroes that have been taking care of the homeless animals,” said JaunPierre van Huyssteen of Cat Box Pet Hyper in Port Elizabeth. Some of the organisations that will benefit from the event are Savea-Pet, the Animal Welfare Society, Paw Prints, Cat Care and Cat Rescue-PE. Their aim is to raise enough food to fill all the organisations’ food storage boxes and create awareness on how people can become involved to help them. Animal lover or not, everyone is welcome to attend the event and donate money or food to the organisation of their choice.
The event will include food stalls, lucky draws and homeless animals that can be adopted. Cat Box Pet Hyper will also be offering special discounts in store and the various organisations will educate the community about what they do and the difference they make in Port Elizabeth. The fundraising event will take place at Cat Box Pet Hyper on June 3 at 144 Heugh Road Shopping Centre.

Last day to support Keep Caring campaign ANIKA DE BEER LOCAL teenager Amy Erasmus broke the mould earlier this year when she decided to spend her gap year helping others.
Amy Erasmus (18) is the driving force behind the Keep Caring clothing drive. PHOTO:SUPPLIED
Erasmus (18) is involved in a number of charity projects, including a clothing drive called Keep Caring. Her inspiration to help the less fortunate came a few years ago at an event where leftover food was donated to a soup kitchen. Her outlook on life changed that day and she has
never looked back. Currently, the Keep Caring Clothing Drive keeps her quite busy and will serve the Port Elizabeth community well during the harsh winter months. At last count, Erasmus collected more than 1 800 articles of clothing. Her goal is to make it to 2 500 clothing items. She has also collected enough food for eight parcels and bedding for four parcels and was able to make sizable donations to Hannah’s Arms, a non-profit organisation (NPO) that cares for babies and fam-
ilies in need, and Love Story, an NPO dedicated to helping the homeless community in Port Elizabeth. She recently realised the impact that she can make on the community at one of Love Story’s soup kitchens. “Helping at the soup kitchen and seeing the type of people I’m going to be helping was a truly humbling experience,” she said. She donated 192 Easter eggs to the soup kitchen, because “everybody likes to have something nice once in a while.” Though collecting and sorting
through the items she has received as part of the Keep Caring campaign takes hours sometimes, Erasmus feels that it is definitely worth it. Soon she will hand out parcels to newborns and their mothers who are in need. Each of the 18 parcels contains a long babygro, two short babygros, a knitted beanie, a blanket and a towel. The Keep Caring Clothing Drive closes today, May 31. Donations can be dropped off at Houdini outlets in Central, Walmer, Newton Park or Sherwood. For more info contact Amy on amy@erasmus.ws.

The students also designed an interactive facade on the house structure that poses the question, “What makes your house a home?” In the SCASA challenge, Port Elizabeth’s talented baristas will face the steam to see who will represent the Eastern Cape at the SCASA National Barista Championships to be held in Johannesburg. ‘Embrace your Wild’ at the Kirkwood Wildsfees VISITORS of all ages to the 16th annual SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees are invited to “Embrace your Wild in the Adventure Province,” said festival director Jennifer Honsbein. This year’s three-day festival at the end of June includes a unique “festival for all seasons” for kids, the Eastern Cape’s premier game auction, “wild rides” and “wild shopping” at over 350 specialist stalls, as well as a galaxy of stars performing under the Karoo sky on the province’s biggest stage. “This festival bridges the gap between the farming community, on whom we are dependent for many of our products, and the retail outlets where our shoppers see the final merchandise,” says SPAR Eastern Cape marketing director Abri Swart. An integral part of the Sundays River Valley, where Kirkwood is situated, is the Addo Elephant National Park, which this year will be selling 50 disease-free prime buffalo from its herd at the Kirkwood Wildsfees Game Auction on Friday, June 30. Hosted in partnership with the organisers of the annual Wildsfees, the auc-
tion gives breeders from the whole region an opportunity to purchase prime game from Addo, other national parks and accredited breeders. Kirkwood’s citrus heritage is being celebrated for the first time at the ATKVLemoenstasie stall in the craft arena. ATKV award-winning chefs Francois Ferreira and Annelie Oosthuizen, founder of Petronella Fine Dining, will be sharing some of their favourite citrus dishes with festival-goers. There is an adventure zone where families can embrace their wild together. These include little pony rides, enchanted walks through the Faeries for all Seasons Wonderland, and meeting favourite characters from Paw Patrol for the youngsters, while parents and the older kids enjoy giant games such as dominos, jenga, croquet and paint ball. Families are encouraged to venture into the Walk on the Wildside marquee to discover endless opportunities available for nature enthusiasts to interact with nature and find a career in the wildlife industry. Top South African artists will be on the all-new giant Adventure Province
Main Stage for the three-day duration of the festival. Artists include: the hunky Brendan Peyper, the energetic Radio Kalahari Orkes, the oversized hat rapper Jack Parow, the stunning Riana Nel, the Captain Kurt Darren, the ‘leeulooper’ Robbie Wessels, Emo Adams, as well as legends PJ Powers and Sonja Herholdt. Other favourite attractions include 350 selected stalls, wine tasting all weekend, South Africa’s White Gold Mohair expo, agriexpo, a Coca-Cola comedy show featuring funny man Roland Gaspar, and the Flavourfontein beach bar with lots of exciting activities from South African Breweries and the kykNET Leefstyl Plein. A first for the Adventure Province is the opportunity to test drive a luxury vehicle on a special track, as well as get close to the action in an extreme endurocross event. The SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees takes place from Friday, June 30 until Sunday, July 2. Gates open from 9am. Tickets are available from the SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees office on 042 230 0064 or visit www.wildsfees.co.za for more info. – REPORTER

The show will be exploring some of the greatest partnerships in history including the Gershwin Brothers, the Sherman Brothers, Kander and Ebb, Lennon and McCartney, Desiree and Frederick in A Little Night Music and Tevye and Golde in Fiddler On the Roof. Synergy combines fabulous costumes from around the globe, beautiful musical arrangements for the orchestra by Debbie Quicke, moody lighting by David Limbert and Roelof Colyn’s “best set of fingers in the business on keyboards” to make for elegant, exciting entertainment in its purest form. Together, they will take 26 years of life’s struggles and creative partnerships to bring fresh insight into the synergy that ignites when two people work together as one. Catch Synergy at The PE Opera House from June 15 to 17. Tickets from R130 per person are available from Computicket.
Local artists support campaign against women abuse ANIKA DE BEER A GROUP of local artists will host a performing arts event on June 24 in support of the #NOTINMYNAME campaign against abuse to women in South Africa. Lutho Hans, a 20-year-old contemporary
dancer from Algoa Park, is organising the event. “I recently heard on the news about the killings happening in South Africa. It is mostly women and children being killed and, having two sisters and a niece, I wouldn’t like something like that happening in our city.

“The #NOTINMYNAME campaign is totally against the abuse of women, which is done by men, so I took it upon myself to put together a production that will not only say no to these kinds of acts, but also to educate men on how to act like men,” he said. Though Hans is not a professional dancer yet, he has been dancing since 2010 and has attended workshops in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Other acts that will feature at the performing arts event include The Eggshells band, rap artist Nazz The Greatest and many more. “I really hope the event touches a lot of men to say it will not happen in our city, in our country and in our world,” Hans said. The performing arts event will take place on June 24 at The Athenaeum in Central from 2:30pm to 6pm. Tickets at R150 per person are available from Lutho Hans on 079 146 7678.

TaggPetersen Duo at NMMU REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s (NMMU) Music Department will present the Tagg-Petersen Duo in Where Worlds Collide on June 12 in the NMMU South Campus Auditorium. Two of South Africa’s most celebrated pianists, one eclectic classical and one jazz artist, will come together in a unique collaboration to form the Tagg-Petersen Duo. Kathleen Tagg and Andre Petersen draw from the rich sonic tapestries of classical music, jazz improvisation and the nuances of South African jazz, as well as indigenous music from southern Africa to explore the diverse realms of sound that can be created with a piano. Each musician has a long history of creating popular and successful projects that cross genres and blur boundaries while creating some-
thing uniquely personal. The project will feature original compositions by Tagg and Petersen, alongside works by iconic South African jazz composers such as Abdullah Ibrahim, Bheki Mseleku and Moses Molelekwa. South African-born pianist, composer and producer, Tagg has been based in New York since 2001. She has performed on four continents, appeared on a host of classical, world music and multigenre recordings and produced numerous CDs and interdisciplinary programmes. Petersen, who is one of South Africa’s most sought after pianists and educators, is the recipient of numerous classical music and jazz music awards. Where Worlds Collide will take place on June 12 in the NMMU South Campus Auditorium at 7:30pm. Entry to the concert is R70 for adults, R50 for pensioners and R30 for students and scholars.
Local mentalist to perform at Grahamstown Festival REPORTER LOCAL mentalist, Brendon Peel, will showcase his talent in Hocus Pocus at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival. Peel was born and raised in Port Elizabeth and enjoyed pranks, practical jokes and tricks at a young age. At the age of 16, he started performing close-up magic at a local restaurant and the interest in psychology behind the mind tricks led him to his love of mentalism for which he is re-
nowned today. At 18, he was the youngest solo magic act to perform at the National Arts Festival. This year will be his seventh time at the festival. Brendon Hocus Pocus is about exPeel. ploring the human mind and PHOTO: the capabilities of the subconSUPPLIED scious. The show includes mind tricks, hypnotic suggestion and illusion which culminate into one hour of interactive and engaging entertainment that will leave the audience mesmerised. ‘The Big 5 Comedy Show’ to hit Bay REPORTER
comfortable truths. Taylor, well-known for his role as presenter on SABC’s travel show, Going Nowhere Slowly, is renowned for his fusion of comedy and magic. Over the years, he has performed locally and abroad at major comedy festivals and his comedy productions, such as Learner Husband, Techni-Coloured and Money’s too Tight To Mention, have sold out at venues around South Africa. Rated one of South Africa’s comedic heavyweights, Rasdien is a seasoned television actor and also a star of several local films. His characteristic style of understating the social, political, moral and ethical questions facing everyone today in his effortless way has made him a favourite among comedy fans. Lastly, Rabinowitz, who refers to himself as the ‘world’s leading Xhosa-speaking Jewish comedian’, has been a staple on the local comedy scene for years. He has successfully produced a string of one-man shows. These five funny personalities will come together for The Big 5 Comedy Show at the Boardwalk ICC on June 10 at 8pm. Tickets from R150 are available at Computicket. The show is rated 16 and older.
NEXT month five of South Africa’s most formidable comedians will descend on Port Elizabeth for The Big 5 Comedy Show at the Boardwalk International Convention Centre. In the star-studded line-up are Barry Hilton, Jason Goliath, Stuart Taylor, Joey Rasdien and Nik Rabinowitz, together with the legendary DJ Ready D rocking the decks. The Big 5 Comedy Show has been a comedy sensation both in Cape Town and Johannesburg and its debut in PE is not to be missed. “South Africa’s big five comics all on one stage for one night only. Brace yourself for the funniest show of the year and the biggest laughs you’ll have this winter,” said Siphokazi Ngombane, PR and Promotions Manager at The Boardwalk. With sets that are never vulgar, malicious or mean of spirit, but always funny, Hilton is known to several generations as a gentleman comic and a master craftsman with flawless timing. Goliath is a larger than life comedian with a commanding stage presence and ridiculous amounts of energy. He has the uncanny ability to make his audiences laugh at life’s un-

AFTER 9 YEARS OF SUFFERING MAAMA FATIMA SAVED MY LIFE I am 45 years old from Summerstrand, after losing in all
healers, as I have tried almost all of them in Eastern Cape. Not one had helped me, until Maama Fatima saved me, my life was a mess. I had two big court cases, no job at the time and my girlfriend had left me. My life was upside down, luckily I read about Maama Fatima. She gave me a MAGIC RING and the first day, I won R420 000 in the casino, my financial problems were solved, my court cases were dismissed and I am happily in love now. The name Maama Fatima means joy in my life Stop suffering in silence.

Shining Stars tame indomitable Young Tigers SELBY MADIKANE SHINING Stars proved critics wrong about being the minnows when they cruised to a well-deserved 2-1 victory over the indomitable Young Tigers in a Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Premier League clash at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday. Since the start of the season, Ti-
gers had been collecting three maximum league points in each game, but Stars had been unfortunate in some games. Prior to the game against Tigers, Stars succumbed 3-0 to Tomorrow Stars on Saturday evening. For the game against Tigers, Stars’ newly appointed head coach Vusumzi Stiller Maranti and newly appointed assistant
coach Bongani River August, however, prepared their side thoroughly. Tigers were the first side to register a goal, which came courtesy of Kamogelo Leeuw following a goal mouth scramble in the 39th minute. Tigers went to the break leading with an odd goal. Stars levelled the score after Vuyolwethu Dlabongo scored a beautiful goal in the 68th minute. Stars’ Mbulelo Makalima penetrated between Tigers’ defenders and scored a world-class goal in the 81st minute to guide his side to a well-deserved 2-1 win. In another game, MOFA Premier League champions Highland Spurs devastated Young Ideas 2-0. Poro Mayinje was the Man of the Match after banging in a brace for Spurs. Royal Bucks stunned the erstwhile league champions Young Madrid after defeating them 1-0 in an enthralling game. SAFA Women’s Regional League heats up SELBY MADIKANE THE so-called big teams took the other teams to the cleaners during SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Women’s Regional League games at the weekend. In the Women’s Stream B, Dower United drubbed Bodene Women’s Soccer Club 4-2 at Dower College Field. The newcomers, Volcano Ladies, snatched a 4-1 away victory over Kuyga Ladies at the Kuyga Community Grounds in Green
Bushes. Other newcomers, Park United, humiliated the hapless Walmer Ladies 5-1, while Rainbow Stars lost 2-0 to Golden Stars. To the dismay of Young Aces supporters, their side went down 2-1 to Zwide All Stars at the Veeplaas Community Fields. In the Women’s Stream A, NMMU Madibaz walloped KUBS 6-1 in a one-sided game. Highbury embarrassed Tomorrow Stars 8-0 in their game that took place in Bridgemeade. It seemed as though Warriors
were disarmed by Vuku Wanderers who beat them 2-0. Fans also saw Shatterprufe losing 1-0 to African Chiefs in their entertaining contest, while Hearts were ruthless when they conquered PE United 3-1. The vehicle manufacturers’ side launched several attacks. As a result, the visitors were compelled to defend. Siyabonga Makhangela came up with VW Masters’ opening goal. VW Masters increased their lead to 2-0 after Thozi Ngesi had scored the second goal for the hosts. Villagers replied with a goal that was scored by Kagiso Madida Lebuso, bringing the score to 2-1 in favour of VW Masters. Villagers’ joy was short-lived after Ngesi had scored VW Masters’ third goal. Villagers decreased their deficit to 3-2 following a goal that was scored by Khaya Kaizer Shenxane. Simphiwe Bitterhout registered a spectacular goal that put VW Masters 4-2 ahead. Makhangela scored a brace that again increased VW Masters’ lead to 5-2. Villagers came out strongly and Kaizer Shenxane sent a salvo that beat VW Masters’ goalkeeper to bring the final score to 5-3 in favour of VW Masters. In another game, AmaUnits went down 3-2 against Winners in an enterprising game that was played at Molefe Primary School in New Brighton. Zolani Zane Dabula was rewarded with a brace for AmaUnits while Buyile Ngaka, Nkululeko Mayinje and Luyanda Brown scored a goal each for Winners. Soweto Masters had to dig deep to earn their 3-2 win over PE Eleven.
Andile Ketelo scored a brace and Lizo Klaasen scored a goal for Soweto Masters, while Siphelo Booi came up with a brace for PE Eleven. Zwide Masters edged out New Brighton Masters 1-0 after their striker Andile Maclean found the back of the net. Young Pirates claimed a hardfought 2-1 triumph over PE All Stars, while Ayanda Hlakuva scored a brace for the Buccaneers. Luzuko Dzuyi Hambaze scored Stars’ consolation goal. Eberspacher earned soft points from Gqeberha who failed to pitch up for their game. Veeplaas outclassed Eleven Attackers 4-0 in their one-sided game. Sparks were unstoppable in their 3-1 victory over Slovo. Sizwe Hani, Kaizer Quntu and Thanduxolo Gxwalintloko were rewarded with a goal apiece, while Nceba Gcezengana scored Slovo’s consolation goal.

Ferrari score 12 victory on streets of Monaco VICTORY around the Monaco streets had eluded Ferrari for sixteen years until yesterday’s comprehensive one-two victory. Kimi Raikkonen, after a sublime pole-winning lap on Saturday, led the field cleanly through the first corner with teammate Sebastian Vettel behind. The pair quickly set the pace and pulled away from third-place man Valtteri Bottas and the two Red Bull’s of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo. Early on in the piece it was evident that none of the chasing pack would have the pace to threaten either Ferrari. Despite Ferrari’s domination of the weekend, debate has simmered around the Italian team’s conduct. While social media has been abuzz with passion and positivity for Ferrari’s other two wins this season, the tone of the comments were slanted more towards disapproval this time around. While Raikkonen comfortably led the opening stint of the race from Vettel by roughly twoand-a-half seconds, the pair began to loose time behind backmarkers. It meant that Vettel closed to within a second of Raikkonen before the fated strategy call. Traditionally the lead car on the track is the one that receives the optimal strategy. This wasn’t the case for Ferrari and Raikkonen in Monaco as the Finn was called into the pitlane first only to emerge amongst a bundle of traffic. With Raikkonen mired in traffic, Vettel was in clear air and free to push as much as possible. He turned a stunning pace too by dipping in
the low 1:15s before his stop. As expected he emerged from the pitlane in first position. There should be no mistaking that Vettel had the pace to win the race. However, the biggest factor that led to Vettel winning the race was Ferrari’s decision to give him the optimal strategy. Had the strategy calls been reversed and Raikkonen been left out longer, Vettel would’ve been in traffic and the Finn would’ve retained his P1 position. As it were, despite running five blistering laps longer, Vettel scraped into the lead by roughly half a second at the exit of the pit lane. On the fact that he dropped nearly eleven seconds behind Vettel, Raikkonen said there was no point to run close to his teammate. “I had nothing to lose or gain. Nobody passes you here.” Ferrari’s choice to run Vettel on the optimal strategy at the expense of Raikkonen was well within the sporting regulations and no rules were broken. But Raikkonen’s demeanour and expression as he clambered out of his Ferrari at the end of the race spoke volumes. There was little doubt that the he was unhappy and well aware of what had transpired. Raikkonen was not alone though as Red Bull made the same strategy calls with Verstappen and Ricciardo – with the latter inheriting third place as a result. Bottas held onto fourth ahead of a furious Verstappen in fifth. Carlos Sainz was undoubtedly the driver of the day with a fine sixth place finish in the Toro Rosso. A difficult qualifying session for Lewis Hamilton left the Brit in thirteenth place on the grid,
which he would recover to seventh by the time the chequered flag dropped. Romain Grosjean brought the Haas home in an anonymous eighth ahead of Williams’ Felipe Massa in ninth and Kevin Magnussen in tenth. While several drivers attempted to barge their way through to a better position, the Monaco Grand Prix on the whole was little more than a procession towards lap 78. Still this race is often one of attrition and keeping it out of the barriers often leads to an opportunity for points. There was no such luck for McLaren though who had turned a relatively competitive pace throughout the weekend. Despite qualifying an impressive ninth on his return, Jenson Button was relegated to start from the pit lane due to changing elements of his power unit and making set-up changes. JB would eventually retire with car damage after attempting a far too ambitious overtaking move on Sauber’s Pascal Wehrlein into the tunnel. It ended with the Sauber resting on its side against the barrier but, thankfully, without injury to Wehrlein. Stoffel Vandoorne had been running in tenth before sliding into the barrier at turn one. Regardless of the divided opinion on Ferrari’s conduct with its two drivers, the fact remains that the Italian team has landed a crucial blow for Sebastian Vettel in the driver’s championship. The German driver leaves the French Riviera with a comfortable twenty-five point lead over Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton.

Kuyga Masters drop first points in PELFA League KUYGA Masters dropped their first points of the season in the Port Elizabeth Legends Football Association (PELFA) League when they were led into a two-all draw by NMBM. It was a tight game where both sides had shots at the goal, but failed to outdo each other. In another match, Old Grey had their colours lowered when they lost 2-4 to the determined African Leopards. Leopards led the match 2-0 at half time, with goals from Luthando Yibe and Solly Solomon. In the second half, Old Grey conceded a goal, while Lukhanyo Dyosopu scored the fourth goal for Leopards. Hearts thumped Priory 7-0 on their home turf. Priory had no chance against Hearts with the Stevenson brothers, Lee and Ian,

helping themselves to a hat trick each. Hearts led the match 4-0 at half time. Stunkie Sifile netted Hearts’ seventh and final goal to end the match 7-0 in their favour. Callies suffered their second defeat of the season when they went down against Shamrocks. The first half was a very close affair with both sides failing to find the back of the net. About 16 minutes into the second half, a lob by Naj Padachie gave the Rocks a welldeserved win. PE City got their first win of the season under their belts with a 3-1 win over Westpark. Mike Fosler had Westpark going into half time with a score of 1-0 after finding the net
halfway through the first half. City turned on the screws in the second half with goals coming from Clifton Murphy, Siyabulela Mvunelva with a sliced shot and Craig Minnie. After three rounds, African Leopards, Hearts, Kuyga Masters and Shamrocks all remain unbeaten. The log table as at Round 3 has Hearts, African Leopards and Shamrocks in the first three places with nine points each. Priory is currently in last place with no points.
