MOM VERGIE: HER ILLNESS WAS NEVER A STUMBLING BLOCK FOR HER

Zoey Harris (12) dies ROSLYN BAATJIES

Z

OEY Harris was only a year old when she received a liver transplant and stole the hearts of many Port Elizabeth residents who admired this brave little fighter.

Sadly, Zoey of Aspen Heights, passed away on Thursday afternoon at the age of 12 after falling ill a week earlier with what was initially believed to be a cold. Her parents, Hubrey and Vergie, and her doctors were with her in the Provincial Hospital when she passed away. Zoey’s funeral service will be held on Saturday, 6 May at 11am at the Bethesda Congregational Church in Satinwood Street, Arcadia. A memorial service will also be held tomorrow evening (Thursday) at 7pm at the same church.

“We had 12 golden years with Zoey. She was the life of the house, the sparkle in the sparkling wine.” VERGIE HARRIS, MOTHER Zoey suffered from biliary atresia, a life-threatening condition in infants in which the bile ducts inside or outside the liver do not have normal openings. Bile is trapped in the organ which damages the liver. Port Elizabeth Express reported several times during her life on Zoey, where her first day in Grade 1 were among the highlights for the family. “We had 12 golden years with Zoey. She was the life of the house, the sparkle in the sparkling wine. She did not stand back for anything. Her illness was not a stumbling block for her,” says her mother, Vergie. “A doctor of the Red Cross Children’s Hospital heard she had died and phoned. He said he did not expect her to live so long after the transplant.” Vergie says Zoey complained about a cold about a week before her death.

Zoey Harris’ dad Hubrey, her sister Caitlynne and mom Vergie. PHOTO: WERNER HILLS “I phoned Dr Elmarie Mathews-Walton, who recommended that I give her cold medication. “After complaining of chest pain, Elmarie said she had to go to hospital where X-rays were taken. Infection of the lungs was diagnosed and she was given medication.” X-rays were taken again on Wednesday after her cough sounded like she had phlegm in her chest. There was water on her lungs and a decision was made to drain it. Zoey died at 1:50pm on Thursday. “While Elmarie prayed, I said a blessing over my child’s life and felt her spirit leaving her body,” said Zoey’s father, Hubrey. He believes she had prepared herself to meet her Creator because she asked that Rev Fred Mathews pray for her, as well as Mathews-Walton and Dr Johani Vermeulen. “This is something she has never done. She also kept asking me what time it was.” Hubrey describes his daughter as a celebrity because everywhere the family went, strangers

greeted her by the name. “She made quite a mark in her short life. She started school at Herbert Hurd Primary School and was in Gr 6 in Cape Recife School. She was only 16 months there, but she acted as if she had been at the school for many years.” During their vacation in Namibia in December she rode around the sand dunes with a quad bike. Vergie says Zoey’s death made her realise how important family is. “Instead of painting my living room, I’d rather use the money to do something together as a family.” Her sister, Caitlynne (14), a Gr 9 student at Collegiate Girls’ High School, says everything will be different because she is now an only child. . The Harris family thanked the Provincial Hospital in Port Elizabeth for its excellent service. “We have been to many private hospitals, but we have never received such service,” says Vergie. The couple said they could never thank the people of the Metro and the Eastern Cape enough for their support.

Flying Squad arrests perfume robbers REPORTER CCTV footage and quick police work led to the arrest of brazen robbers who stole thousands of rands of perfume from a shop in the Sunridge Village Shopping Centre after holding up a shop assistant in broad daylight. According to police spokesperson Col Priscilla Naidu an unknown person walked into the fragrance and cosmetic store at about 11:45am on Wednesday last week and threatened the store assistant with a firearm. “The woman was locked in the back room after which three or four more suspects entered the store and loaded perfumes into their bags,” said Naidu. The assistant was rescued when another employee returned from a break and heard her banging on the door.

“The suspects’ getaway vehicle was identified through CCTV footage. Members of the PE Flying Squad went to the owner’s house in Bluewater Bay. “As they were busy interviewing the owner, the suspect, who is the owner’s son, drove towards the house. The suspect made an attempt to evade the police, but was cornered at the end of the street,” said Naidu. The man (20) was arrested and detained for business robbery. Further investigations led the police to a house in Motherwell where a woman (28) was also arrested. Some of the stolen perfumes, together with other expensive equipment, were recovered. A toy gun was also seized. According to Naidu, the two suspects appeared in court on Friday. The woman, Jabulili Qingana, was charged with possession of suspected stolen property and her case was re-

manded to May 8 for a formal bail application. The man, Inga Dubase’s case was remanded to May 2 for a formal bail application. At time of going to print, no further arrests had been made and details of the latest court appearance were not available According to Naidu, the other expensive items recovered were not taken from the store and the police believe that they may have been taken in other robberies. Naidu said no shoppers were in the store at the time of the robbery. The Acting Cluster Commander for Mount Road Cluster, Brigadier Keith Meyer, commended the efforts of the arresting officers who immediately acted on the information gathered at the crime scene. “Team work and the speedy dissemination of accurate information is key to effecting arrests of perpetrators of crime,” Meyer concluded.

GIVING love and care for children with a disability can go a long way towards making these children gain confidence in life, said Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) Executive Mayor Athol Trollip. This was said during a speech at a handover of play equipment to Miracle Kids Stimulation Centre in Chatty on April 24. The centre cares for 35 children with disabilities and the play equipment will go a long way to helping them exercise and lead a healthy and productive life. “Miracle Kids Stimulation Centre is a beacon of hope for children with special

needs. There are very few of those in our communities,” Trollip said. “With the new play equipment it offers these children a quality of life they may not previously have had.” The founder and manager of the centre, Genevieve Hendricks, said children at the centre receive all the support, attention and love that is lacking from communities. According to Hendricks, the partnership with the Department of Health and the Cerebral Palsy Association makes the work of the centre easy to do despite the challenges faced. She thanked the Municipality for the donation and assured the mayor that they were going to make full use of the play equipment.

Drug mule arrested with cocaine worth R100 000 REPORTER A 25-YEAR-OLD man, was arrested at about 11pm last week Thursday when he was found in possession of cocaine with an estimated street value of R100 000. Justin Geyser (25) appeared in the Magristate’s Court on Friday on drug possesion charges. He was due to appear in court again yesterday for a formal bail application. At time of going print no details on the court appearance was available. Geyser was arrested after drugs that were hidden in headache powder and cereal boxes had been found in his possession. According to police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu, Mount Road Police members were patrolling in Newton Park when they noticed a man running towards Westview Road. Warrant Officer Werner Maree and Constable Kim Sauls stopped the man and questioned him. Upon searching him, they found a sealed cereal box in his back pack. They then found 12 headache powder boxes, each containing 38 sachets, in the cereal box. The K9 narcotics dog, Charlie, was called in to identify the contents to which he immediately reacted. The powder was

then identified as cocaine. The acting Cluster Commander for Mount Road Cluster, Brig Keith Meyer, has commended the two officers for their quick thinking and initiative. “Drugs and substance abuse contributes largely to the commission of various crimes, including serious and violent crimes. Therefore, we will intensify our efforts in ensuring that drug pedlars will not make our areas a haven for their illegal trade, he said.

Volunteers host Family Day for Cheshire Home residents REPORTER TWO volunteers recently held a Family Day event for the residents of Cleary Estate Cheshire Home. Amy Douglas, a fourth year social work student at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), and Shanice Human are volunteers at Cleary Estate Cheshire Home, which cares for individuals with various disabilities. They were asked by the manager of Cheshire Home, Hilary Bolton, to arrange the Family Day for the residents as they do not get many visitors. “They often feel left out, so the purpose of

the day was to bring the families and friends together and have some fun,” Douglas said. Cheshire Home, located in Bethelsdorp, was established in 1993 and currently cares for more than 40 residents. They also have a children’s programme located on their premises that caters for physically disabled children in the community. The children are transported daily from their homes to Cleary Estate Cheshire Home and back again. Douglas said that they wanted to make the day as memorable as possible, while raising awareness on what the home offers and everything they do. “It was a huge success and everyone really enjoyed the day,” she concluded.

Annual workshop inspires Grade 12 learners REPORTER A GROUP of about 100 matric girls were empowered and inspired by the “Maximizing Your Potential” theme and overriding message of the ninth annual Port Elizabeth Businesswomen’s Association (BWA) Grade 12 Workshop which took place at Linkside High School last month. The workshop has been one of the BWA’s key initiatives since 2009 and aims to reach out to young girls who are preparing for their

future after school. The inspiring and informative workshop was presented to learners from 10 schools in the city. Other speakers included Bernadette NelNaudé of Atlas Security, Bajabulile Mayaka, who is part of the Golden Key NMMU Chapter, and Hlubi Hewitt Coleman. BWA chairperson Michelle Brown urged the girls to follow the organisation’s philosophy by passing on their new-found knowledge. “At BWA, we strive to lead the way for younger generations of businesswomen to de-

Madibaz striker shines on and off the field REPORTER IN the past year, Madibaz football captain Cloudius Sagandira has excelled both on and off the field. Earlier this month, he led the Madibaz football team to victory in the Safa-Nelson Mandela Bay SAB League while graduating cum laude with a master’s degree in chemistry. Under his guidance, Madibaz dominated the SAB League to such an extent this season that they secured the title with four matches remaining. Currently in the first year of his PhD degree, Sagandira said his love of the game started at the age of nine when his father gave him his first pair of boots – a black pair of Nike Tiempos. “I scored in my very first match wearing those boots, but I unfortunately missed a penalty kick in the final of the same tournament and we lost,” he said. “It’s a day I’ll never forget.” Growing up in Nyanga, Zimbabwe, Sagandira played football throughout his school career, but said his academics had always taken preference. In 2011 he left his home town to pursue his academics in South Africa, where he continued to excel in both his sport and studies. After the Varsity Football final in 2013, the striker was made an offer by a professional club, but with the guidance from his family and his coach, Mark Tommy, he made the decision to turn it down. Tommy, now the Madibaz football manag-

er, was one of many offering his support when the 26-year-old graduated earlier this month. “My family and friends celebrated with me, along with my football family: Mark Tommy, my coach, Wayne Iveson, and Jayde Howitz.” Sagandira gave thanks to those who had been present and said each of them had inspired him in their own way. When it comes to balancing his interests, he said the biggest source of inspiration came from former Madibaz football captain Kurt Duff. “I used to worry that I wouldn’t be able to balance football and academics, but when I saw him doing well in his studies and sport, I was convinced that I could do the same. “He was a great example to us all, on and off the pitch,” he said. “He has no idea how he influenced my life.” Looking ahead, Sagandira said he was no longer chasing his childhood dreams of becoming a professional footballer or chemical engineer and would instead focus on excelling in his field of research – microfluidics and chemical processing. He said it was unlikely, given his age, that he would pursue a career in football. “Realistically, it’s highly unlikely that I will play football professionally as I will be 28 when I finish my PhD in 2019 and at that age it will be difficult to make it in a professional setup,” he said. “Instead, I now hope to be a top researcher in my field of study and ultimately leave the world a better place.”

HOSPICE WEEK 1 7 MAY: SUPERHERO STREET COLLECTIONS TODAY AND TOMORROW

Death is not age selective REPORTER WITH Hospice Week currently taking place from May 1 to 7, St Francis Hospice has some frightening facts to share. Of the 1 152 115 people living in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, some 422 000 (36.6%) are unemployed. The youth make up 47.3% of this number, which amounts to nearly 200 000 people. Another scary statistic is the large number of terminally ill youths that are in the care of St Francis Hospice. St Francis Hospice cares for an average of 5 000 terminally ill patients every year, 25% of whom are between the ages of 18 and 35. St Francis Hospice was started in 1986 by a passionate young sister. It provides home-based palliative care to patients in the terminal phase of cancer, HIV/Aids, TB and Motor Neurone Disease. Hospice has several caring and dedicated qualified nurses and so-

cial workers that visit patients and families in their homes to provide them with much-needed medication, love, support and counselling. However, the tragedy is that the youth, who is meant to be the next generation of breadwinners for their families, often leave behind a legacy of debt and displacement as they are unable to work and care for their children. One of St Francis Hospice’s patients, Josephine Namutebi (37), has been cared for since October 2015. “I started getting severe pain in my bones in 2015 and the doctors could not find out what was wrong with me. The pain would not go away and eventually my employee sent me to see his private doctor,” she said. The doctor discovered a lump in her breast and, upon further investigation, found that the cancer had spread to her bones. It was too late to remove the lump and the doctor advised her to go for radiation. “I felt much better after radiation and I returned to work, but six

months later I was in severe pain again and I could not go back to work. I was very sad in the beginning as I even struggled to make lunch for my little boy, who is now nine years old. “Instead of me looking after him, he is now looking after me. I must say that I am very blessed to have such wonderful people in my life. Everyone is so positive and encourage me to appreciate every day as a gift. I believe that God will cure me. I see miracles around me every day, why can’t I be one of his miracles?” she asked. Sister Janice Malkinson, who has been assigned to Josephine since 2015, said she is still amazed at her brave spirit and how she defies her illness. “I see Josephine two to three times a week to change her dressings and bring her medicine and vitamins from the Livingstone Oncology Department. We believe in a multidisciplinary team approach and together making a positive difference in the

How can Hospice help you? Hospice provides care to terminally ill patients suffering from cancer, HIV/AIDS, TB and Motor Neurone Disease. Once you have reached the stage where you need care, you can request a referral letter from your doctor or clinic to submit a referral to Hospice. Once received, a nurse will visit to assess your needs and admit you as a patient.

lives of our patients. “We first look to ensure they are comfortable and pain-free before we look at their emotional state, spiritual needs and how well the family is coping now and will manage once the patient passes on. It really is a holistic service that we offer to provide our patients with the best quality of life until they pass on,” Sister Janice said. Hospice Social Auxiliary Worker Bukelwa Matabese played a pivotal role in securing the financial wellbeing of Josephine. “When I met her in 2015, I realised that she received no financial support from government as she was born in Uganda. I immediately made arrangements for her to receive a disability grant, child support and grant-in-aid. Josephine has a wonderful sister who makes sure that her son goes to a good school and assists her where possible,” she said. Josephine is still fighting the good fight and doesn’t believe in giving up.

I FOUND A TRUE HEALER MAMA GINA 063 599 3060 I am Jessica aged 32 and living in Cradock. I testify to the good works of MAMA GINA. She saved my marriage, after being married for 8 years without a child. My husband almost left me. I was so frustrated with life until I read about MAMA GINA and her good works in the news papers. All I needed was to save my marriage with only R350 she helped me and now I have two kids of my own. I’m so grateful. She also helped my husband secure a good job. I will always be thankful because MAMA you are such a blessing.

My Names is Charniel Johanes from Western Cape. Firstly I want to thank KING LWASA for what he done for me in my life and for all success I have achieved because of him Financially. There are many doctors out there who claim they can change people’s life financially while they cannot do it and I’m saying this out of what I have been going through trying to change my life. Before I met the real one KING LWASA, I lost a lot of money until last year 24th October when I read about KING LWASA who helped a lot of people by using SHORT Boys to put money into their account in 2hrs and he only take 20% after the success of work. Am happy with my family and we got our own business running. He also got RATS to bring money in your house, MAGIC RING to win money games, Lost lover, Family Matters and Divorce all problems solved in same day

My name is Reuben, am 48 years old, I stay with 4 children, for a very long time there was no happiness in my life, even my wife left me because I couldn't support my own family. I had to look after my parents. I was the only breadwinner in our family and I was working as care giver. I struggled financially my kids needed school uniforms, my parents needed help with basic needs as they are elderly. I visited different pastors, prophets and traditional healers with no one could help me. I wasted all the money, but no results, I just kept losing the little I had. I was helpless for many years, until I read a testimony of Gabriel who was testifying the good work Prof Hope did to change his life by using Short boys to put money into his account. I made an appointment with him he explained to me all the options like money rats to put money in the house on same day, short boys to put money in your Account on same day, magic ring to win money games like gambling, casino, lotto and betting. Magic wallet to multiply your money. I chose money rats to put money in my house. He explained to me the process, I couldn't believe when I received the money on the same day. I immediately contacted him and paid him 25% and my sister chose magic ring for lotto and we are financially stable, all thanks to Prof Hope. Also helps with: bring back lost lover, family matters, bring back stolen goods, bind y o u r p r o p e r t y, m a l e enlargement. Home visits AROUND Eastern Cape.

My Name is Heidi from Eastern Cape. I have been suf-fering financially for many years, I have worked as a domestic worker, earning a very minimal salary. I used to consult many traditional healers to assist in changing my life financially. I gave them all the money to finish un-finished jobs because of that I couldn’t explain to my kids where my money was going. My eldest daughter even moved out of the house because of our situation at that time. I came across a testimony from sister Jenini from Despatch, testifying about Prof. Sally that had helped her by using Magic Rats to put money in her house on the same day. I phoned sister Jenini she explai-ned to me how her life used to be, she gave me Prof Sally’s number and I contacted her, she explained to me all the options and I chose Magic Rats to put money into my shack. I was shocked when I saw the money. I contacted her and she said it was ok for me to use the money. I paid her 25% from the money I recei-ved. Now my life is debt free, my kids are back at school and I bought a new house for my family. Prof Sally can also help with Shortboys, Magic Ring for gambling, Magic Stick for money and gals, and she also finishes unfinished jobs.

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 3 MAY 2017

Legends League is set to kick off next week FRANCOIS ROTHNER NEXT Wednesday, May 10, will see the start of the Legends League, which falls under the auspices of the Port Elizabeth Legends Football Association (PELFA). PELFA is currently an associate member of the Port Elizabeth Football Association

(PEFA) and in the not too distant future an application will be made to become an associate member of The South African Football Association (SAFA) Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB). All league matches will take place on Wednesday nights at seven different venues in the Metro. The 10 that have affiliated to participate in

the league are African Leopards FC, Callies FC, Hearts FC, Kuyga Masters, NMBM FC, Old Grey FC, PE City FC, Priory FC, Shamrocks FC and Westpark FC. Westpark’s squad includes seasoned exPEFA Premier League players such as Arthur Chan-King, Vaughn Botes and Ryan Erskine. Cliffy Murphy, cricket administrator Greg

Oberholzer and Siyabulela Mvunelva all form part of the PE City squad, while Callies, who won the Over 35 League in 2016 when it fell under PEFA, have brought stalwarts like Collin Schwagele and Kevin Sonic Claridge back to see if they can win the league again. Seasoned players Kagan Assam, Jason de Reuck and Jason Aitken will spearhead Old Grey this season.

Ideas fail to dim Stars in their crucial game SELBY MADIKANE RELEGATION-threatened side Young Ideas failed to claim victory when they drew 2-2 with other relegation candidates Morning Stars during their crucial ABC Motsepe League game that was played at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Saturday. The tempo of the game was very fast from the first kick-off with both sides in pursuit of the opening goal. The Motherwell side found the back of the net after their midfielder, Nceba Neymar Sizani, headed home their opening goal beating Stars’ goalkeeper, Mthunzi Tshwara Ngcingane, in the 35th minute. The visiting team kept piling on the pressure, but goalkeeper Aphiwe Skhoko Mambukwe stood his ground under Ideas’ goals. Stars nearly equalised, but their hardworking midfielder Vuyolwethu Jali Klaas’ effort went wide right at the end of the first half. Stars were awarded a penalty that was scored by Klaas in the 63th minute. Ideas, however, quickly cancelled the joy of the Stars supporters, when Asenathi Zozo Scout banged in a goal from a penalty spot. The penalty was given after Sithembiso Bebeto Pefile used his hand to stop Ideas’ goal

to cross the line in the 82th minute. Pefile went for an early shower while Stars completed the clash with 10 men. Ideas’ joy was cut short when Stars’ defender, Uyathandwa Kaizer Mabengu, headed home a spectacular goal to make matters level at 2-2 in the 86th minute. Stars could have increased their score, but Andile Mabunda Snyman failed to beat Mambukwe in a one-on-one situation. There were lost opportunities for Ideas as well. Their striker, Landile Libazi’s headers went wide twice with goalkeeper Ngcingane beaten. Snyman, who played his heart out, was named the Man of the Match. Both sides were in dire need of a win to avoid dropping to the regional league so that they could maintain their status in the provincial league. All in all the game was a thrilling one with hundreds of supporters in attendance. In their game Lion City also played to a 1-1 draw against other relegation candidates at Motherwell NU 2. SAFA NMB Masters take to field on Freedom Day SELBY MADIKANE SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay Masters Association celebrated Freedom Day in grand style when they resumed their league games at various venues. Villagers succumbed 3-0 to Zwide Masters at Shining Stars Ground in Motherwell NU 13. Andile Maclean scored a brace while Nkosinathi came up with the other goal. The high-riding Ama-Units managed to beat Sparks 1-0 in their tough game, with Vuyani Jomo Mtati guiding his side to a 1-0 victory at Shining Stars Ground. Eleven Attackers embarrassed Slovo 4-0 in their one-sided game that also took place at the Shining Stars Ground. Mthunzi Zane Mrwebi and Ncedisa Gondwe Goniwe scored a brace each for Attackers. Football fans watched two games that were played at Molefe Primary School’s fields in New Brighton. In the first scintillating game, Eberspacher accumulated three maximum points aft-

er they defeated Soweto 2-1. Monwabisi Ntile and Vernon Jewell scored a goal apiece while Koko Mlambo came up with Soweto’s consolation goal. In the last game at Molefe Primary School Ground, New Brighton snatched a narrow 3-2 win when they took on PE Eleven. New Brighton’s goals were scored by Xolani Fololo, Mbulelo Funde and Thabang Yawa with Monwabisi Nkonki scoring a brace for PE Eleven. Gqeberha loyal supporters saw their side going down 3-1 to Winners at Walmer Community Football Field. Lunga Rala found the back of the net twice and Ridge Baliwe scored the other goal for Winners. Kanina Komani scored Gqeberha’s consolation goal. VW Masters suffered a huge setback when they lost 2-1 to Young Pirates at their own home ground. Banele Phezisa registered a goal for VW Masters, while Ayanda Hlakuva and Khaya Mhlahlo helped the visiting side to claim a hard-fought 2-1 victory in their pulsating game.

NELSON Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Madibaz disappointed the home side Royal Bucks after they had beaten them 2-1 in their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) SAB Regional League game that took place in front of large crowds at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday. Bucks, whose home supporters came in numbers, took the game to the champions, NMMU Madibaz. Early in the first half, Bucks’ skipper, Sibahle Balo Nkosana, headed a top-notch goal that Madibaz goalkeeper Xolani Myataza could not stop. The Motherwell lads controlled the game, but their strikers failed to convert their golden opportunities into goals. Playing without their head coach, Wayne Iverson, assistant coach Nicolas Myataza managed to keep his side as a unit. Bucks maintained their 1-0 lead until the half-time. Madibaz’s goal poacher, Farouk Pankie Abrahams, unleashed a thunderous shot that beat the Bucks’ goalkeeper to make matters equal. Madibaz came up strongly and their midfielder, Simamkele Tobi, scored the student’s winning goal to make the final score 2-0 in favour of the NMMU Madibaz. NMMU has put both hands on the league trophy while Bucks want to sneak into the top eight teams. Ikamva Movers beat Camper United 2-1 in a Motherwell derby that was played at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium. Camper registered their goal courtesy of their midfielder Akhona Koli in the first half. Camper defender Siyabulela Willie Ngqiyaza scored an own goal for Movers in the first half, while the super substitute, Buntu Nkwa-

Wells United take Milan Stars to cleaners SELBY MADIKANE WELLS United took Milan Stars to cleaners when they thrashed them 4-2 during the Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Premier League game that took place at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday. Stars broke the ice with a well-taken goal by Bulelani Mengu. The joy of Stars’ loyal supporters was short-lived, however, when Lucas Mgushe scored a goal for the Wells Estates side. A goal from Siyabonga Grootboom put Stars in the lead again with the score 2-1. Mgushe scored United’s second goal to take the score to 2-2. Both sides went to the half-time with their goalkeepers pulling some brilliant saves. In the second half, United forced Stars

to defend. United midfielder Sibusiso Sabani sent a hot shot that beat the Stars’ goalkeeper to put the score at 3-2. Ayabonga Phillip followed up with a long-range shot that Stars’ goalkeeper could not deal with to make the score 4-2 in the favour of Wells United. United proved beyond any doubt that they were the more organised and solid side because they absorbed the pressure when they were trailing in the first half. TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

First F1 victory for Valtteri Bottas at Russian GP ON paper the Sochi Autodrom in Russia is a track that was supposed to play to the strengths of the Mercedes given its powerdominated layout. But predictions and form “on paper” are often fickle. Ferrari stunned the F1 paddock on Saturday to lock out the front row of the grid for the first time since the 2008 French Grand Prix. The catch though was the kilometre long run from the start to the first braking point of the lap. It was here that Valtteri Bottas, starting third, made his move. It was fairly easy to conclude that a big part of the Russian Grand Prix story would be decided at the start. This is precisely where Bottas made it happen by acing his pull away. As the Finn led Vettel, Raikkonen, and teammate Lewis Hamilton through the first lap, the safety car was deployed after a clash between Renault’s Jolyon Palmer and Haas F1’s Romain Grosjean.

While the safety car neutralized the race for a handful of laps, it had no real effect on the race. At the resumption of the race, Bottas pulled away from Vettel and steadily built up a gap of roughly four seconds. It was evident that at least Bottas’ Merc was running well on the ultra-soft compound tyre. In contrast, Lewis Hamilton was never able to trouble third-placed man Kimi Raikkonen. Though he did briefly struggle with an overheating car, the truth is that Hamilton was off the pace throughout the entire weekend. He did, after all, qualify half a second off Vettel’s pole winning lap. But this is something we’ve seen from Hamilton before – Baku in 2016 comes to mind. While Vettel could do nothing about Bottas’ pace in the first stint, it was the second half of the race where the Ferrari’s finally

came alive. Their superior pace on the super-soft tyre resulted in an easy third place for Raikkonen and a nail-bitingly close fight for the win for Vettel. While Vettel managed to get within six tenths of Bottas, he wasn’t able to attempt a pass. In the famously unflappable style that has come to exemplify most Finnish racing driver, Bottas held his nerve to take his first Grand Prix victory. It’s taken 81 starts for Bottas to win his first race, but there will hardly be a more popular winner in the paddock. Bottas, Vettel and Raikkonen scored the top three positions while Hamilton finished in lonely fourth. While Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo retired with rear-brake failure, his teammate Max Verstappen trundled home in an anonymous fifth place a minute adrift. Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon scored

important points for Force India in sixth and seventh ahead of Nico Hulkenberg’s Renault in eight. A late-race slow puncture forced Felipe Massa into the pits, which dropped the Williams driver down to ninth ahead of Carlos Sainz’s Toro Rosso in tenth. It was yet another forgettable day for McLaren as Fernando Alonso failed to start the race with a suspected battery issue. Elsewhere Williams’ rookie driver, Lance Stroll, finished his first Grand Prix of the season in eleventh. There will be some that say the Russian Grand Prix was a bit of a bore and that there wasn’t a whole lot of overtaking. But what was in abundance was the sort of tension, at the head of affairs, which hasn’t been seen for quite some time. And the good news is that it involves two teams that are very evenly matched. Two teams that will undoubtedly continue to trade blows right down to the wire.

Boeremusic Guild to host open golf day REPORTER THE Boeremusic Guild will be hosting an open golf day at Shark River Golf Course on Saturday, May 27. “As the Boeremusic Guild caters for the public, our aim is to provide the best entertainment with funding raised from sponsorships and dances,” said Susan Groenewald, Boeremusic Guild Secretary, PE Branch. They host dances every month at Rowallan Park Primary School and about four times a year at Despatch Town Hall.

In order to make the open golf day a success, they need the community’s help to sponsor players or prizes. Interested parties can sponsor a hole or tee at R500, prizes, cash donations that can be used to purchase prizes or the course fee for four nominated players to the value of R560. Company sponsors may display their branding on the day in the form of banners and products. For more info contact Susan Groenewald on 082 771 0943 or Fanie van Niekerk on 073 827 1353.
