MOTHERWELL: TEENS AND YOUNG ADULTS MOST AT RISK

Aids campaign launched REPORTER

L

AST Thursday, September 28, saw the fight against HIV and Aids in the Nelson Mandela Bay take a giant step forward when the Nelson Mandela Bay Counselling and Testing Campaign was launched at the Raymond Mhlaba Sports Centre in Motherwell.

The launch was specifically located in Motherwell because it has the highest prevalence of pregnancy terminations, teenage pregnancies, HIV infections and sexual violence in Nelson Mandela Bay, according to the HIV and Aids office manager of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM), Dineo Mokonenyane. At the launch of the campaign, Mo-

konenyane presented the state of HIV and Aids and relevant factors and influences in the Nelson Mandela Bay area. Her presentation was based on a report that was presented by the Department of Health at the Nelson Mandela Bay Aids Council sitting recently. According to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality spokesperson,

Mthubanzi Mniki, the awareness campaign is a partnership programme between the NMBM, the Departments of Health, Social Development and Education, and the non-governmental organisation, Khethimpilo. The main objectives of the campaign is to decrease the rate of new HIV infections among girls and

young women, decrease teenage pregnancies, especially among female learners, keep girls in school until they finish matric, introduce them to programmes that will assist them in furthering their studies and also decrease the number of sexual and gender-based violence,” Mniki said. City leaders to attend hearing to oppose Eskom increase REPORTER THE entire Nelson Mandela Bay mayoral committee will attend a National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) public hearing on November 1. The public hearing comes after Eskom’s proposed tariff increase of 19.9% next year, which

the metro government will vehemently oppose. According to the Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip, major infrastructure maintenance and overhaul has begun under the coalition government. “A R25 billion maintenance backlog requires the administration’s urgent attention after decades of negligence and poor governance. “As such, Bay residents are already digging

deep in terms of rates and tariffs. Every cent of this additional rates income is going to promote infrastructure-led growth and accelerate service delivery improvements,” he noted. The mayor said Eskom had shown itself to be irresponsible and reckless with public money. “Therefore, a tariff increase cannot precede the utility getting its house in order by ensuring financial prudence and reliable management,”

Trollip said. He further said that cities are the engines of growth and development and could be unnecessarily stifled by unreasonable tariff increases. “As such, all metropolitan municipalities should reject Eskom’s proposed tariff. “I urge all Bay residents to participate in this public hearing on November 1, the venue for which will be announced soon.”

Aids campaign launched: M’well teens, young adults most at risk Continued from page 1 The campaign will be ongoing, and while it will cover the entire city, most of the focus will be on Motherwell. Mokonenyane added, “The advantage of this campaign is the fact that it is grounded in the community and we are working with an NGO that is entrenched within the community of this area. Schools have also embraced this campaign, and teachers and pupils will be taking it to their schools and homes.” The day started with a march, where the youth and pupils, joined by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), marched through the streets of Motherwell to raise

awareness of the challenges faced by young people, predominantly girls, in the Motherwell area. The proceedings at the launch also had a practical component: a number of young people present went through HIV counselling and testing, life skills guidance and advice. They were also given valuable information about HIV and Aids, dealing with sexual abuse, the risks associated with the termination of pregnancy and the repercussions of teenage pregnancy. The spotlight was also turned on the thorny issue of sugar daddies – now popularly known as blessers. The highest HIV and Aids infection rate was recorded among girls no older than 25. The in-

The result being the high rates of sexually transmitted infections and teenage pregnancies. “The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is committed to take the fight against HIV and Aids and teenage pregnancies to greater levels, because too many of our youth are falling through the cracks and end up unemployed and destitute. “This leads them directly to sexual predators, who entice them with material things,” said Makunga. Masiphathisane High School learner Sokhana Boltina (15) said that she was grateful to be part of the HIV testing campaign. “Attending this programme has empowered me. From now on I will be an ambassador for this programme. I will take it back to my school and community. I now know better about unplanned pregnancies and the importance of abstaining from sex, using condoms and staying in school to secure my future,” said Boltina.

fection rate among men of the same age is far lower. “This is a glaring issue that clearly indicates that these young girls are taken advantage of by men far older than them and infect them with HIV because they do not have the power to say ‘no’. Part of our plan is to put parents at the centre, but the integration of all stakeholders is critical,” said Mokonenyane. The HIV positive rate at an antenatal clinic in Sub-district A (Motherwell) is 18.5, compared to the much lower rate of 8.2% recorded in Subdistrict C, which covers the Bethelsdorp areas. The number of babies born to mothers under the age of 18 in Sub-district A is 657 per quarter, compared to the much lower figure of 2014 in Sub-district C. Speaking at the event, Ward 58 councillor Mendiswa Makunga urged parents to be open and frank with their children in communicating about sex and sexuality, especially as teenagers are easily influenced to make bad deci-

Teamwork leads to arrest of alleged thief REPORTER A SUSPECT is in police custody for theft from a motor vehicle, following good teamwork between the community, police and a security company that resulted in his arrest after an incident in Parsons Hill earlier this month. The PE Community Information Centre (CIC) received a call from a concerned citizen on September 6, reporting that she had noticed a suspicious-looking person walking in the streets of Parsons Hill. The CIC operator contacted Fidelity ADT Security and asked that an armed response officer is deployed to investigate. “Armed response officer Jody Hitzeroth patrolled the streets of

the suburbs looking for a suspect matching the description he was given. When he noticed a person matching the description, he stopped the suspect and searched him,” said Ryan Britz, branch manager for Fidelity ADT Security in PE. A neighbourhood watch patroller also soon arrived on the scene to assist officer Hitzeroth after receiving a report about the incident from the CIC. After further investigation it was discovered that the items found in the suspect’s possession had allegedly been stolen from a car belonging to the resident who earlier alerted the CIC. “We are delighted with the wonderful synergy shown between all the security partners in this case. The CIC monitoring centre is based at Fidelity ADT’s offices in PE. Operators relay all emergencies to the appropriate authorities or partners, including fires, medical emergencies, or reports of suspicious or criminal activity. “The CIC has shown numerous positive results over the past few months and the services have even been extended to Jeffreys Bay and East London. “I would also like to congratulate officer Hitzeroth for his vigilance and bravery in responding to this incident,” Britz added. The suspect was handed over to the Mount Road SAPS.

BAIC expects first cars from SA plant in 2018 THANDI SETOKOE

THE Chinese vehicle manufacturer, Beijing Automotive Group (BAIC) together with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), recently held a media briefing on the progress of the construction of its vehicle manufacturing plant to be established in the city. It will be the first new car plant to be built in South Africa in 40 years and is expected to build 50 000 vehicles a year by 2022. BAIC will be the major shareholder, holding 65% of the venture and the IDC will hold the remaining 35%. Speaking at the briefing, BAIC SA senior representative Sun Tongli said the vehicle assembly plant, which will be implemented in two phases, will comprise an assembly shop, paint shop, office block, energy centre and sewage treatment works. “The first phase will have installed capacity to assemble up to 50 000 units per annum. This number is expected to double at full capacity in the second phase,” he said. He added that phase one is anticipated to be completed in the second quarter of next year. Around two-thirds of the production is earmarked for the export market and the vehicles will include passenger cars, sport utility vehicles, light com-

&RPSHWLWLRQ mercial vehicles and pick-ups both for domestic and export markets. “One of the keystones of the project is to include the community of Nelson Mandela Bay and the surrounding areas, Uhambiso consultant managing director George Gerber noted. He further said that the project is aimed at creating approximately 800 direct jobs. “More than 35% of the R800 million building works budget has been allocated to SMMEs to ensure meaningful and impactful participation of SMMEs. Project contractor Beijing Industrial Designing and Researching Institute (BIDR) said 80 to 85% of the procurement value for the civil building works will be from SA companies and 15 to < The vehicle plant, which is currently still under construc tion, is expected to build 50 000 vehicles a year by 2022.

30% of the procurement value for the plant will be from local suppliers. “BAIC has set a target of 60% local content for the vehicles to roll off the Coega assembly line, while the parts will be sourced from new and existing component manufacturers in SA,” he said. He added that plans for the vehicle plant also include the future construction of a supplier park in the Coega IDZ to facilitate parts supply. Construction is several months behind schedule, mainly due to contractor and labour disputes. “Although the market is tough in South Africa, we do foresee the regional Southern African Development Community market picking up in due course,” IDC regional manager, Kingsley Dell-Robertson remarked. The plant will be located on 47.3 ha of land under a covered area of 88 969 m2. SMMEs are encouraged to register on the BIDR procurement database on www.app.bidr.co.za. Tenders are published on www.bidrsouthafrica.co.za.

Weybridge Park: New water pipe to solve bursts ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL

“The old pipe was 30 to 40 years old and it has now been replaced with a new pipe of top quality,” Rautenbach said. “Whenever the old pipe burst, the water flow had to be shut down, sometimes for hours, while the pipe was being repaired, which had been a huge inconvenience to the residents of this area,” explained Rautenbach. “The replacement of this pipe shows the DA coalition government’s commitment to ensuring that the current water crisis is taken seriously and that we are doing our best to address any wastage of water.” The new 325m pipe was installed on

FOR years residents of Nerifolia Street in Weybridge Park had to endure a water pipe bursting regularly, resulting in them being without water for hours on end. After three years of requesting for the old pipe to be replaced, Ward 8 councillor Gustav Rautenbach is relieved that a new pipe was finally installed. Since 2014 nine instances have been reported where the pipe had burst, which resulted in water running down the street.

September 6, and the work required the removal of the paving of some driveways in the street, explained Rautenbach. “I am very grateful to the residents who have been very patient during the process of replacing the pipe. I thank them for their cooperation,” he said. The project ensured job opportunities for six residents of the nearby informal settlement. “I feel very strongly about the employment of local residents in such projects, especially the empowerment of the women from the community,” Rautenbach said. The installation of the new pipe cost approximately R2 million.

VP learner wins interschools speech competition REPORTER DURING the year many toastmasters give up their time to run youth leadership courses at local schools in and around Port Elizabeth. During the programme, which consists of eight-week courses, the Grade 11 learners are taught communication and presentation skills and how to run a meeting and conduct themselves in the business world. “At the end of each course at the various schools, a competition is held and the best speaker is entered into an interschools speech competition, whereby the learners compete against each other,” Algoa Toastmasters Club contest chairman Colleen Love said. Love added that Toastmasters from ACT, Algoa and Uspeak Clubs are involved and act as judges on the evening. “The interschools competition consists of each learner delivering a three to five minute speech on a subject of their choice. Thereafter the top five speakers then compete in an impromptu contest, where the overall

winner is decided. “This is healthy competition and to ensure that there is no bias, the learners competing do not wear school uniform and only after the results have been announced, their respective schools are announced,” Love said. This year youth leaderships were completed at 16 schools. “This is an amazing feat as it involves dedication on behalf of the Toastmasters involved.” The interschools competition was held on the evening of September 21 at Alexander High School with distinguished toastmaster Ricky Woods as the chief contest judge. The winners were as follows: in first place was Rebecca Brewerton from Victoria Park High School, second place was Darren Tarentaal from Sanctor High School and in third place was Keano Cotton from Lawson Brown High School. Each winner received a trophy and each participant received a certificate. Encouraging parents to attend and support their children, Love concluded, “The competition was of a high standard but all the participants were winners.”

Waddle for African Penguin Awareness Day THE Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) in Port Elizabeth will celebrate African Penguin Awareness Day on Saturday with a 3km awareness waddle from their premises to Something Good. The special day is dedicated to raising worldwide awareness about the plight of the endan-

gered African penguin, the only penguin endemic to the African continent. All funds raised at the Awareness Waddle will contribute to SANCCOB’s continued work to rescue, rehabilitate and release seabirds back into the wild. To make for a family fun day, SANCCOB invites participants to dress up and make posters

in support of their handsomely suited friends. Prizes will be up for grabs in these two categories, as well as other spot prizes on the day. There will also be a SANCCOB souvenir stall, face painting, penguin-inspired yoga classes and fun edutainment activities to keep everyone entertained. The day will kick off with the feeding of

SANCCOB’s homepen residents at 10am, followed by an educational talk on The Plight of the African Penguin. The awareness waddle will start at 11am. General admission is R30 for adults, R20 for children under the age of 12, and free for pensioners and children under five. For more information contact SA – REPORTER

Expo ends on a high note for family competition winners REPORTER

THE PE Express First Choice Kids and Baby Expo ended on a very high note with six winners walking away with prizes valued at R72 000. There were plenty of winners throughout the three-day event with prizes and expo-exclusive offers promoted by generous exhibitors at the eighth expo held at the Boardwalk Exhibition Centre. Two finalists were drawn each day, winning prizes valued at nearly R3 000 each from First Choice Milk, Kids Emporium, Muna Bikes and Beans with Wings, and standing a chance of winning the main prize which was valued at over R54 000. With all six finalists on stage, the excitement mounted as the winning number was drawn by Spiderman (Alex Karantges) to the kids’ delight. The overall winner, Mandy Matthews (33) of Providentia, won an exquisite array of high quality baby items and accessories including a Stokke Xplory pram, a Stokke Sleepi Bed and linen, an iZisleep car chair and the comfortable Stokke Flexi Bath and insert. She also won a bumper hamper from Kids Emporium valued at R4 000, a family shoot from Impact Photography, and a portable jungle gym from Windsor Forest Products. The elated mother of 14-month-old Carter said she was surprised when she won as she had visited the Kids and Baby Expo for the past three years and entered the popular FAMILY COMPETITION each year with many entries, but this year dropped only three entries into the box. “This was my lucky year. I always look forward to visiting the Kids and Baby Expo,” Matthews said. In the true spirit of giving and receiving, Mandy immediately offered to donate her old pram to Healthy Mom and Baby Clinic in the Expo’s care zone. Her generosity was warmly welcomed by the non-profit organisation which is committed to the delivery of private

care to the most vulnerable and underprivileged women of our community. The six finalist prize winners were: Shaunré Halgreen of Sherwood and Loren Achary of Greenacres on Friday, Leanri Nagel of Blue Water Bay and Bianca Labaschagne of Ben Kamma on Saturday, and Shafeeka Abdollatief of Malabar and Mandy Matthews of Providentia on Sunday. Judging panel impressed by quality stands A few exhibitors were also winners at the PE Express First Choice Kids and Baby Expo this weekend. To recognise the high standard of exhibition stands, a panel of judges, consisting of Tasmia Ismail of Media24, Carmelia Miles of First Choice and Andrew Stewart of Peri Expo, visited the expo on Saturday to rate the exhibitors’ creative use of space, visitor engagement and marketing information. Valley Crag and Gecko Grips took first prize with their clever climbing wall layout which was very inviting for kids and interactive for parents. Oumies Dolls took second prize for her effective use of space to display her life-like dolls, her passionate product knowledge and attention to detail. Party Stuff won third prize for their bright and happy décor, strong branding and enthusi-

astic staff. The judges also commended several other stands highly, naming MyMum, The Willows Resort and The Little Closet. Parents, children and exhibitors impressed with variety of the Expo Families had plenty to keep them entertained this past weekend with the PE Express First Choice Kids and Baby Expo which saw a record number of visitors, over 6 500, at the Boardwalk Exhibition Level. Now in its eighth year, the Kids and Baby Expo enjoyed the reach of the broader Eastern Cape surrounding areas due to its new partnership with Media24 and its community newspapers. The growth and diversity of visitors was welcomed by exhibitors who were thrilled with the new potential business. Moms, dads, grandparents and extended family members were welcomed to the sound of kids’ laughter as they flocked to the expo to shop for adorable baby clothing, quality educational toys, nutrition, educational options and even family insurance. Nearly 90 exhibitors were running competitions, specials or sampling their products. Algoa FM’s Briony Sparg and Charlton Tobias hosted the event and kept visitors up to date with exhibitor specials and the entertainment schedule throughout the weekend. On Friday the expo kicked off with the talent-

ed St George’s Preparatory Schools’ musicians and drama learners onstage followed by the kiddies favourite purple dinosaur, Barney, before meeting Milki Moo at the popular First Choice Smoothie competition. Budding young chefs loved the opportunity of mixing fresh fruit and First Choice’s dairy products to compete for fun prize hampers. Kids rushed to take a photo with their favourite cartoon character at the Café Selfie Booth. The popular mascots strolled around over all three days, from Spiderman to Minion, Snow Queen to Mr Pritt. The kids loved the puppet and reptile shows and had fun winning prizes with Young Yoga and Play World Toys. Firm favourites at the expo were the three metre high climbing wall, the pedal go-kart track, the soft play area for toddlers and the cute face painting. Many families returned for a second visit over the weekend as the outing was such a success. Expo organiser Linda Harwood expressed her satisfaction with the success of the event following great feedback from exhibitors. “It’s been wonderful to experience the positive energy and success of this year’s event and to hear exhibitors’ feedback of building new business and to witness families thoroughly enjoying themselves,” Harwood said. Parenting 911 Workshop The PE Express First Choice Kids and Baby Expo launched the Parenting 911 Workshop this year, a new collaboration with ecBF, early Childhood Business Forum. The Workshop which was aimed at busy parents, au pairs, nannies, and pre-school teachers, working with children between the ages of 0 and 3 years, as well as health professionals, was supported by 50 delegates at the Boardwalk Conference Centre on Saturday morning. “We were encouraged by the support of the first Parenting 911 Workshop and hope to continue this event annually with the Kids and Baby Expo,” said Zeidie-Lee Müller, operations director of Victory Kids Early Intervention Centre and one of the workshop organisers.

Draughts tournament to uplift budding talent THANDI SETOKOE AS a means of empowering and uplifting budding talent, Port Elizabethbased draughts champion Melikhaya Nonyukela will host a draught tournament this weekend. The tournament will commence in Uitenhage on Saturday and conclude in the Zwide Stadium hall on Sunday. Draughts or checkers is a strategy board game for two players, which in-

volves diagonal moves of uniform game pieces and mandatory captures by jumping over your opponent’s pieces. Nonyukela, who was introduced to the game by his uncle and grandfather during his formative years in the small town of Peddie, said his love for the game began at the early age of eight. “At the time I did not take the game seriously as I was very young and just played for the fun of it. It was only when I moved to Port Elizabeth and introduced to great players like Xolisani Pram and Ray Rubu that my love for the game really developed,” he said. Last year the 43-year-old was crowned as the Eastern Cape champion at the Eastern Cape Draughts Association Trials tournament in King William’s Town. The tournament featured teams from East London, King William’s Town, Grahamstown, Mthatha and various other cities and towns around the province. He was also recently (July 21 to August 7) selected to represent South Africa at the World International Draughts competition held in the United States, where he obtained third place and re-

ceived a bronze medal. Nonyukela describes his experience abroad as transformative. “It was a great experience getting to play against the top players from other countries. I enjoyed every moment and learnt so much. I did, however, have a slow start due to the fact that I had a problem with recording and using the clock which was new for me because we don’t use it in South Africa.” The draught enthusiast added that he desires to share all that he has learnt during his time away in the States with other players. “I want South Africans to learn what I have learnt abroad. The use of clocks and records will make things easier for them when they get a chance to play in world qualifiers.” He noted that finance is a huge challenge as the sport needs funding in order to work. “Sponsorship is really needed as the sport is slowly but surely becoming very popular. With the little that I have I managed to buy trophies, medals and recording papers for the tournament.” He said they are also expecting players from Cape Town and East London to participate in the games.

Centrestage offers fantastic yearend office party fun REPORTER COMPANIES looking for innovative ways to celebrate their end of the year office parties will be excited to hear about Centrestage’s November/December party season offerings running at the Hellenic on Conyngham Road from November 23 until December 2. The shows will be staged in a chairs-around-tables cabaret environment with the venue providing bar facilities at the venue, while patrons will have the choice between providing their own catering, bringing along picnic baskets, using the recommended on-site caterer arranged by Grant Foong, or purchasing food at the venue on the evening. Their recent sell-out hit staging of Back to the ’80s proved just how festive a show can be, and is coming back to the Hellenic for four performances on November 23 and 30 and December 1 and 2 respectively. This fantastic selection of popular ’80s music performed by a 12-piece band offers a combination of a 90-minute interactive show before the band kicks the 80s party into high gear. For those who wish to put on their dancing shoes from the beginning, Centrestage offers two nights of The Decades Party on December 1 and 2, with the dance floor opening straight featuring dance classics from the 1970s, before moving

through the decades until reaching today’s chart toppers. Comedy fans will have the opportunity to enjoy a brandnew show from popular comedian Gino Fabbri, entitled Laugh Lines, on November 28 and 29. Laugh Lines features a pristine basket of crazy characters, packed with hilarity, guaranteed to turn frowns back into laugh lines. Block bookings can be made for office parties large or small, book and wine clubs, girls nights out, businesses looking to entertain clients or any kind of group looking for an ideal environment for celebration with little fuss to arrange. Tickets costing between R120 and R180 each can be booked through Wendy by calling 082 661 6921 or emailing wendy@centrestage.co.za. The Centrestage office is run mornings only by Vanessa and can be contacted on 041 368 3093, 083 225 5401 or vanessa@centrestage.co.za.

ARE YOU FRUSTRATED AND DEPRESSED FINANCIALLY (DON'T lose faith, give Prof Hope a try)

Strongest Healer

My name is Reuben, am 48 years old, I stay with 4 children, for a very long time there was no happiness in my life, even my wife left me because I couldn't support my own family. I had to look after my parents. I was the only breadwinner in our family and I was working as care giver. I struggled financially my kids needed school uniforms, my parents needed help with basic needs as they are elderly. I visited different pastors, prophets and traditional healers with no one could help me. I wasted all the money, but no results, I just kept losing the little I had. I was helpless for many years, until I read a testimony of Gabriel who was testifying the good work Prof Hope did to change his life by using Short boys to put money into his account. I made an appointment with him he explained to me all the options like money rats to put money in the house on same day, short boys to put money in your Account on same day, magic ring to win money games like gambling, casino, lotto and betting. Magic wallet to multiply your money. I chose money rats to put money in my house. He explained to me the process, I couldn't believe when I received the money on the same day. I immediately contacted him and paid him 25% and my sister chose magic ring for lotto and we are financially stable, all thanks to Prof Hope. Also helps with: bring back lost lover, family matters, bring back stolen goods , bind your property, male enlargement. Home visits AROUND Eastern Cape.

Father and Son Soccer Festival unites the community SELBY MADIKANE HUNDREDS of community members of Ward 59 converged at Swartkops Valley United Brothers’ (SUBS) field to support the teams that participated in the Ward 59 Father and Son Soccer Festival on Saturday. According to ANC Ward 59 Councillor Mazangwandile Dano, the reason why his office organised the tournament was to encourage the parents, in particular the fathers, to support their children playing

sport. Councillor Dano said, “We have noticed that most fathers do not support their sons who take part in sport. We decided to call the festival the Father and Son Festival because we wanted to bring the fathers to the field of play so that they can support their sons playing soccer. “If the parents watch sport then their children will be motivated.” The u/13 winners were SUBS who overcame Tomorrow Stars 2-1 in the final. They walked away with R300. Tomorrow Stars u/17 scooped the first

prize of R300 after they defeated Seven Sundowns Sports Club 3-0 on penalties after the full-time score of 1-1 in their finals match. In the masters’ section, Eleven Attackers emerged the winners following their 1-0 victory over Swartkops Valley Villagers. Attackers went home with the prize of R400.

National Lottery Commission boosts SUBS teams SELBY MADIKANE THE National Lottery Commission (NLC) has boosted the confidence of the Swartkops Valley United Brothers (SUBS) teams in the form of a playing kit. According to SUBS chairman, Bongo Zondani, the kits came at exactly the right time. Zondani stated that they bought a set of kit for the u/13, u/15, Premier League side and the ABC Motsepe League side. He said, “We decided to buy each team a brand-new set of kit, 10 soccer balls for our team that campaigns in the ABC Motsepe League, five balls for our Premier side and five balls for our junior teams. “The remaining funds will be utilised for the registration of our teams, players’ cards, transporting our ABC Motsepe League team for its away games, match

fees, hiring the fields and paying accommodation and players’ food. “We have also bought two pairs of soccer boots for our coaches.” Zondani revealed that the NLC has restored the dignity of SUBS teams.

“Our biggest challenge that we have faced was that our junior teams did not have kits at all. Our juniors had to wear the senior team’s kit when they were playing. “Today, our junior teams will don the proper jerseys during their games.”

Safa EC Nedbank Cup results SELBY MADIKANE EXCITING clashes and nail-biting penalty shoot-outs provided great entertainment in the Nedbank Cup at the weekend, featuring the best teams from the four streams of the ABC Motsepe League. The semi-final games that were played at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium were humdingers. Lion City defeated the newcomers PE Stars 2-0, while Highbury overcame SUBS 4-3 on penalties after the 1-1 full-time score. In the finals, Lion City earned their sweet revenge when they eliminated Highbury 1-0. City Lads advanced to finals after they handed a 2-0 defeat to Bizana Pondo Chiefs at Mount Ayliff Stadium, while Mthatha City edged out Spears 1-0 in their tough game.

To the dismay of the supporters, Mthatha City embarrassed City Lads 4-0 in the finals. Eastern Cape Bees devastated their arch-rivals Tornado 2-1 in their semi-final match, while the rookies Sibanye FC succumbed 2-0 to FC Buffalo in their semi-final match that was played at North End Stadium in East London. EC Bees injected their venom into Buffalo to win 2-0 in the finals. It was clear that Try Again FC would return to the next Nedbank Cup as Butterworth FC thumped them 3-0 in the semi-final that was played at the Walter Sisulu University Ibika Campus in Butterworth. Matta Milan defeated Future Tigers 4-2 on penalties following their goalless full-time score during their semi-final. Matta Milan beat Butterworth 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out in the final after the teams had drawn 1-1.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

Max magnificent in Malaysia THERE is a word in the English language that is often overused without the context of its full meaning, but as I arrived at the Sepang International Circuit for my first live Formula 1 experience, I was finally able to comprehend what the word surreal truly means. And yes, I’m still pinching myself. As the crowds streamed en masse to the final hosting of the Malaysian Grand Prix expectations were high among the colourful fans of Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull, and many others as various nationalities converged to relish in and share their passion for Formula 1 racing. While the excitement of race day reduced the sweltering heat and humidity, which consistently hovers in the high 80s Fahrenheit (above 26 degrees Centigrade), to a mere foot-

note, it was Ferrari who looked the real deal in practice and qualifying with Raikkonen on the front row. But while Hamilton racked up yet another pole position, albeit by half of a tenth, Sebastian Vettel ran into reliability issues, which relegated him to 20th on the grid. Still, Ferrari looked to have, in the form of Raikkonen, more than enough pace in the pocket to stroll to the chequered flag. It, however, wasn’t to be as, much to the crowd’s despair, the Finn did not even make the start of the race thanks to a similar electrical issue that afflicted his teammate, Vettel, in Saturday’s qualifying. It seemingly left the door open for Hamilton to inflict maximum damage on his rival, but the Mercedes team and championship leader suffered a humiliating defeat to Red Bull’s

THE popular Valley Market will take place this weekend and all the proceeds brought in through ticket sales at the door of this event will go toward Love Story’s feeding schemes. The Valley Market will be held this Saturday at the Tramways Building from 9am to 2pm. The Valley Run, which is a 5km run through Settlers Valley, takes place an hour before the market which is at 8am from the Tramways building. Runners pay a R20 registration fee which gets them into the market afterwards, as well as a free coffee. “A new stall called La Familia will be serving Mexican-styled breakfast burritos and a nacho salad for lunch which will service the vegetarians, something that’s been long awaited,” organiser Elaine Watson said. “We have a few very exciting food stalls such as a Texan-styled barbecue, Asian dim sum, authentic Indian curry, gourmet burgers and artisan pizzas.” The Kids Zone will offer children under 12 years a fun-filled morning of activities, face paint, sand art and jumping castles. Max Verstappen who turned a stunning pace which relegated Hamilton to second and without any possible chance of victory. The young Dutchman was a definite crowd favourite who elicited cheers from the packed turn one grandstand every time he passed it. Imagine the roar then when Verstappen snatched the lead from Hamilton and proceeded to easily pull away from the Mercedes. With consummate ease Verstappen produced a fabulous performance to secure only his second victory in F1. Hamilton, a distant and disconsolate second, trailed home more than 10 seconds adrift. Meanwhile, Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo held onto third ahead of Vettel who charged through the field to finish fourth. Valtteri Bottas’ lackluster form continued

with an unspectacular fifth place some 26 seconds adrift of Vettel’s Ferrari. While Sergio Perez finished a solid sixth, one of the definite stars of the day was McLaren’s Stoffel Vandoorne who finished an impressive seventh overall. The Williams driver pairing of Lance Stroll and Felipe Massa finished eighth and ninth respectively while Esteban Ocon took the final point on offer for tenth in the Force India. Despite not winning, Lewis Hamilton extended his championship to 34 points ahead of this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix. The Suzuka circuit is one too that, on paper, should suit the Mercedes better than the Ferrari, but as the situation stands, the Italian team must throw all caution to the wind if they, and Sebastian Vettel, want to salvage anything from the 2017 season.
