ELSON Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) used to be an award winner for being the cleanest city in the country, and the city needs to reclaim the title again. These were the sentiments of Executive Mayor Athol Trollip at the official launch of the Metro’s War on Waste campaign in KwaZakhele last week.
The NMBM has in the past received the Cleanest Metro in South Africa Award twice and Blue Flag Status has been awarded to the majority of its beaches. Blue Flag Status is an international award given to beaches that meet excellence in safety, amenities, cleanliness and environmental standards. It is the wish of Mayor Trollip to once again scoop the Cleanest Metro title and he has, therefore, pledged his full support of the War on Waste campaign. Deputy Executive Mayor Mongameli Bob-
ani, who also heads the Public Health Portfolio, shared the mayor’s views and sent out a strong message at the launch. “I am a passionate champion for a clean Nelson Mandela Bay and this campaign that we are launching is very close to my heart,” Bobani said. “The state of our city is unacceptable. Have you noticed the dirt and mess? Heaps of rubble, plastic and litter are scattered along our residential streets, in open plots, in the backyards of homes, outside businesses and often
right next to wheelie bins and drop-off sites. We can just look around and see the mess.” Bobani further said that every resident in the city deserved to live in a clean environment. “Never adopt the mindset that littering and dumping are normal and that nothing can be done about it. Far from it! It is in fact a criminal offence and should not be practised, accepted or condoned by anyone.”

Unemployed youth given a helping hand REPORTER WASTE management company EnviroServ has sponsored learnerships for 17 unemployed Nelson Mandela Bay youths to complete a Business Administration Learnership. The learnership programme started in late 2015 with 55 learners from other parts of the country. Of this number, 46 graduates were employed by EnviroServ divisions on fixed term contracts. “Because of the success of the programme, EnviroServ committed to expanding it to Port Elizabeth for the first time,” said Neville Moopanar, EnviroServ Group Training Manager. After consultation with the local ward counsellors, 17 men and women aged 18 to 35, two of whom are differently abled, were selected from Motherwell and Wells Estate. EnviroServ will pay all their tuition costs for the year of around R45 000 each. “Part of our skills development strategy is

to provide learnerships for employees but also unemployed people in the communities in which we operate. This is one of the ways in which we give back.” Moopanar said learnerships were key to addressing “scarce and critical skills within the sector and industry.” The 12-month Business Administration level two learnership is a national certificate through the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and consists of three months theory and nine months of practical training. “We aim to equip learners with both theoretical and workplace learning interventions, that lead to occupationally based qualifications that are registered with SAQA,” explained Moopanar. “It is important to create a pool of suitable, qualified people with the right skill and knowledge. Employees are a business’ greatest asset and key differentiator. Price, processes and systems can be copied but skilled and experienced staff are invaluable.”

THE War on Waste campaign is described as the NMBM’s biggest clean-up campaign in its history and will comprise sending out cleansing units for waste removal and litter picking, the cleaning of waste hotspot areas, visiting residential areas to create awareness, ensuring that residents have access to wheelie bins and enforcing bylaws on illegal dumping. “We will help you to get rid of your unwanted waste, whether in your own backyard or in your community or open areas. But then the municipality’s deal with residents is that they may not recommit the offence of littering or dumping. With your help, we will transform Nelson Mandela
Bay into a clean, safe and hygienic place! Let’s make it safe for our kids to play outside. Let’s be proud of and take care of our communities,” Bobani said. He concluded by appealing to everyone in Nelson Mandela Bay to be a part of the campaign. “Please participate and join us in this campaign, in this war on waste. Whether you are a gogo, a teacher, a student, a pensioner, a housewife, or a builder – your participation is important and will make a difference. How can you participate? Either stop illegal dumping yourself, discourage family or community members from littering and dumping, or report offenders. Refuse and litter belong in black bags or in wheelie bins – nowhere else.”

Local charities receive R2.3 million from VW REPORTER FOUR charity organisations in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan area have become the latest beneficiaries of the Volkswagen for Good Initiative. The latest donation of R334 338 to the four local charities brings the total amount disbursed by Volkswagen in 2017 to local non-profit organisations to R2.3 million. The four beneficiaries are The Igazi Foundation, Gelvan Park Frail Aged Home, Bet Sheekoom House of Restoration for Women in Crisis and Cleary Estate Cheshire Home. Each organisation will receive a portion of the donation from Volkswagen. The donation will help the beneficiaries to continue with the work that they are doing in their communities. The Igazi Foundation provides haematological services which include haematological diagnosis as well as treatment option workshops for general medical practitioners and medical officers. The Gelvan Park Frail Aged Home cares for
115 elderly residents. The home offers in-home services, homemaker services, transport facilities, recreational activities, meal programmes and other services relatable to senior citizens. The Bet Sheekoom House of Restoration for Women in Crisis helps women in crisis within the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan area. The Cleary Estate Cheshire Home cares for 43 severely disabled adults from impoverished communities. The residents are given different jobs within the home and they also run a beading and fabric painting project which helps the residents to generate income. “We value the support that we provide to our local communities through the Volkswagen for Good initiative. It is vital for businesses to help communities where they operate by making financial contributions that will impact on the lives of the people that they serve. At Volkswagen, we also give back to our communities through other initiatives such as the employee volunteer programme which we call the Show of Hands,” said Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director of Volkswagen Group SA.

Speaking at the launch on Monday, April 3, the Executive Mayor Athol Trollip emphasised the importance of heightening the standard each time the Metro hosted an event as this showcas-
es the city’s capabilities, its beauty and abundance of varied offerings for tourists. “We are a capable city and have over the years shown our strength and level of professionalism every time we hosted high profile events. This city is committed to improving facilities and by next summer season, there should be a visible change and improvement in our public facili-
ties,” Trollip said. The no-alcohol policy at the event also helped minimise incidents related to alcohol abuse and as such, only a handful of minor incidents such as petty theft were reported in the past. Metro police will work in tandem with local police to ensure safety and security is maximised during the event.

Framesby learners win engineering competition REPORTER FRAMESBY High School in Port Elizabeth was crowned the winner of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) Algoa Branch Aqualibrium Water competition, earlier this month. The South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) and Labco supported the event. Framesby High learners Donovan Jerling, Juandre Gilbert and Philip du Plessis will compete in the SAICE 14th annual Schools Water Competition in Johannesburg in July. SAICE hosted the one-day competition at SANRAL’s offices on March 25 to afford learners the opportunity of planning, designing, constructing and operating a water distribution network, whereby they encounter similar challenges that occur in managing an actual water distribution network of a town. “This competition demonstrates the importance of managing water distribution systems which are important to supply safe and clean drinking water to people. It also exposes the learners to the field of civil engineering and provides a glimpse into why civil engineers play a critical part in our infrastructure management,” said Pieter Joubert, SAICE Algoa branch chairman. The participating schools included Framesby High School, Alexander Road High, Loyiso Senior Secondary, Mfesane Senior Secondary School, Newton Technical High school, Pearson High School, all from Port Elizabeth, and Brandwag High School from Uitenhage. SANRAL Southern Region’s Marketing and Communications manager, Michelle Ah Shene, said participating in SAICE events is an extension of SANRAL’S commitment to the development of the civil engineering field. Ah Shene said SANRAL promotes the importance of civil engineering through supporting projects like the Nelson Mandela Met-
ropolitan University’s (NMMU) School of Engineering STEM Pipeline Project, bursary and scholarships, and training civil engineering graduates in the SANRAL Southern Region Training Academy. Saturday’s competing teams were tasked to design a model water distribution network to distribute three litres of water equally between three points on the grid using two different diameter pipes and various connection pieces. They were then judged on how well they executed the task – working on a penalty points system. The teams had approximately one hour in which to plan, design, build and operate their network. What started as a South African competition where learners had to design, build and operate a water distribution system, exactly the same way qualified civil engineers would do in a municipality, has over the past three years become international, where Swaziland and Zimbabwe are also participating in the national SAICE competition. “This is an adventure that all learners remember once they had been there to experience the challenge first-hand,” Joubert said. “This competition exposes learners to the processes which influence their daily lives and is often taken for granted, such as providing water supply to homes. They are made aware of the intricacies involved in the design of water distribution networks and the actual water delivery to households,” Joubert added. Joubert explained that the grid used for the water distribution network is on a background that depicts the water cycle with all the major impacts affecting this scarce resource. This grid intrigues learners, as well as educators, who find it a very useful educational tool. The competition creates awareness regarding the issues surrounding water in South Africa. It spreads the message that water is a

precious commodity, which should be recycled, reused and respected. Through this annual competition SAICE takes the responsibility of spreading the news that water should be used wisely, that infrastructure should be maintained and that new infrastructure should be developed to provide potable water to all in South Africa. Juandre Gilbert of Framesby High School said he enjoyed participating in the competition. “It was extremely fun to do the experiment. When we arrived here we had no idea
what to expect and what to do. We can go back to school and share what we have learned with fellow classmates.” Morgan Moss of Alexander Road High School, who was the only learner representing his school, won second place. “This was exciting. I was nervous because I was not sure if they would let me participate because I was alone from my school and the competition entries call for a three-member team. Maths and science are my favourite subjects. I also enjoy doing experiments and building things.”

Big Walk raises R300 000 for cancer support REPORTER FOR every metre of the five kilometre course, R60 was raised for cancer treatment and support at the 2016 Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer, presented by the Eastern Cape Department of Health. Among the 11 000 walkers who braved rain and wind were Phumulo Masualle (Premier of the Eastern Cape), Dr Pumza Dyantyi (MEC of Health), Pemmy Majodina (MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture) and Athol Trollip (Executive Mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro). The annual walk, which is one of the biggest charity events in the Eastern Cape, raised a total of R300 000 to support non-profit cancer organisations in the Eastern Cape. The Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (CHOC), the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) and the Igazi Foundation each received R100 000 at a formal cheque handover that took place in Port Elizabeth on March 31. The Igazi Foundation has already used the proceeds donated by the walk to purchase a much-needed X-ray Machine.
“This machine saves lives. Before the machine arrived, we had to send our patients to Livingstone Hospital to have X-rays done, which was extremely inconvenient,” said Cole Cameron of the Igazi Foundation. CANSA will be using the funds to restore and maintain the Strelitzia Care Home. “It is a home-away-from-home that accommodates patients undergoing cancer treatment at the oncology clinics that are located far from their homes. The Strelitzia Care Home provides a safe and comfortable environment for patients who are undergoing treatment,” said CANSA’s Marius de Vries. “CHOC will be using the donation to service its key areas at the Provincial Hospital’s Paediatric Oncology Unit. “The money will be used to support our psychosocial services, and to transport children in Port Elizabeth and from the surrounding areas such as Tsitsikamma, Cradock and Grahamstown to receive treatment at the Provincial Hospital’s Paediatric Oncology Unit,” said Anne-Marie Stephenson the Fundraising Manager of CHOC Port Elizabeth. The 2017 Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer will be held on November 4.

POPS launches winter drive, school holiday programme IT is proving to be quite a busy year for the POPS (People Opposing Poverty in Society) Foundation as they launch their sixth annual winter drive, as well as a new school holiday programme. The winter drive kicked off on April 1 and will run until May 31.
businesses and the community. Participating drop-off points include Beetlestone KwikSpar in Gelvandale, Summerbreez SuperSpar in Summerstrand, Autosport in Cleary Park Shopping Centre and The POPS Foundation’s office in Kabega Park.
As in previous years, the main recipients of this project will be impoverished people in the community. The aim this year is to distribute food, blankets and warm clothing among shack dwellers in the townships, as well as the western and northern suburbs. The foundation is once again appealing to the community for their assistance in the collection of pre-loved warm winter clothing for adults and children, as well as blankets, shoes and non-perishable foods. These items are used to make up parcels to assist families who need it most. “As we have seen over the past number of years, even the smallest contribution can make the biggest difference in the lives of the less fortunate, said the POPS Foundation’s Mureedah Botha. The foundation also distributes over 60 000 meals each month through soup kitchens, daycare centres, children’s homes, old age homes, shelters for the homeless, families in need and other institutions. They receive no formal funding or grants, and are entirely dependent on sponsorships from
The School Holiday Programme The POPS Foundation School Holiday Programme is a brand-new project aimed at providing children with fun and educational activities including arts and crafts, health and hygiene and informative talks about topics such as abuse and drugs. “The goal is to keep children safe and stimulated during school holidays when they would normally be roaming the streets in unsafe areas, said Botha The project kicked off at Republiek Primary School in Windvogel and approximately 200 kids have been invited to sign up for the programme. They will also be provided with snacks and meals and will be given the opportunity to give back to their school by participating in a clean-up of the school grounds. “The school itself has many challenges, as do the majority of the schools in the northern areas. With this programme the goal is to alleviate some of these challenges, said Botha. For more info contact Botha on 083 738 8436. – REPORTER

Last Thursday the staff and learners of GJ Louw Primary School in Schauderville bid farewell to teacher Jenny, undoubtedly one of the school’s pillars, who is retiring after 43 years of teaching. “I can say with great gratitude that my cup runneth over. Without God I would never have made it. Teaching children can be compared to a potter who is using clay to mould something and at the end you have a product. I have enjoyed my teaching career to the fullest,” Japtha said. For her teaching was a constant learning curve because of the changes that took place continuous-
ly. “The highlight of my career is the joy it brought to my heart when I see the faces of these learners at the end of the day knowing that I’ve made a difference in their lives.” Her passing message to the learners and fellow staff members she is leaving behind is, “Education is vital, therefore, I would like to encourage all learners to go to school and do their best and to all educators not to give up but to do what their calling is for.” Principal Dudley Erasmus, who had been teaching with Japtha for 38 years, said the school would miss this very versatile teacher, who could easily teach both Foundation and Intermediate Phase. “The learners loved her very much. We as staff will miss her expertise and her mentoring of educa-
tors. I am confident that she will reap the fruits and enjoy the shade of the trees that she has planted.”
Jennifer Jaftha retired after 43 years at GJ Louw Primary School.

Cotswold makes World Maths Day count REPORTER COTSWOLD Primary School recently celebrated World Maths Day in colourful fashion with the theme of Dr Seuss’s Cat in the Hat. The celebration was aimed at creating awareness of the importance of mathematics, especially in light of World Maths Day which took place on March 12. To add to the theme, a Maths Hat competition was held, which required the learners to create their own hats with a maths theme while also dressing up as one of Dr Seuss’s characters. “Learners started reading books by Dr Seuss two weeks beforehand so that they could familiarise themselves with the characters. They also received support from their teachers and parents to create their own hats,” said Cotswold Primary
School’s Principal Barbara Porter. The day was started with an aptly titled Maths Assembly which included a hat parade, a maths presentation and a Mental Maths Keep Fit Counting activity. Herman Frosler, the principal of Victoria Park Grey, was the guest speaker at the assembly and encouraged the learners to develop a love for maths as it is an important subject and key to many excellent careers. Other guests who attended the assembly included parents, community members and Department of Education District officials, Analize Baines and Ntombi Njadayi. The celebration continued as fun interactive maths activities took place during lessons. The aim of the day, according to committee member, Beverley Blignaut, was to improve the standard of mathematics and to foster a love for maths in a fun, interesting and meaningful way.

New furniture for Heatherbank Primary REPORTER HEATHERBANK Primary School recently received a much-needed donation of tables and chairs from the Varsity College Port Elizabeth campus. The donation helped to fill the additional classrooms which were recently added to accommodate the school’s growing numbers. Heatherbank Primary School has been around since 1974 and has grown to accommodate 140 children, aged three to eleven. Heatherbank Primary is also a registered NPO aimed at helping underprivileged children from Walmer Township. “KICK is a NPO that was formed in 2006 to impact the lives of children in South Africa. We aim to build four classrooms for Grades 4 to 7,” said Heatherbank Primary School’s
Principal Ellen Lovemore. “In 2016 we managed to raise funds through KICK and the German Diplomatic Mission to build two of these classrooms. We still need to build two more and an ablution block by 2020,” said Lovemore. Paul Manson, the principal of Varsity College Port Elizabeth, added, “We recently refurnished and upgraded our IT labs on campus to accommodate our growing student numbers. We have a close association with Heatherbank Primary School and were aware that the school was expanding, so what better place to give our tables and chairs to than this great school.” “The donation of desks and chairs will be used in our new computer lab and four new classrooms. We are delighted with our modern desks as they complement our new classrooms,” Lovemore concluded.
Celebrating a combined love for maths and Dr Seuss were, at the back, from left, Amy Malan, Alfredene le Roux, Wayne Muller, Barbara Porter (Principal) and Beverley Blignaut. In the middle are, from left, Jody Holyoake, Mbalentle Tame, Leah Daniels and Kwezi Mbengashe and, in front, from left, Athandile Nyepa, Lydia Marchman, Noorun-Nisa Jones and Kylie Scholtz. Khayalethu Youth Centre receives boost from Paarl Coldset REPORTER YOUNGSTERS of the Khayalethu Youth Centre are in high spirits thanks to a R35 000 donation by Paarl Coldset Port Elizabeth, which forms part of the Coldset printing division of Novus Holdings. The Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiative aims to give ‘a hand up, not a hand-out’ to its beneficiaries by empowering them to grow independently. The Kayelethu Youth Centre instils a sense of pride in boys formerly living on the streets by helping them to aim high and achieve their goals. Khayalethu means “our home”
and that is precisely what the Centre provides for the 35 boys aged between 6 and 21 living there. The financial boost from Paarl Coldset Port Elizabeth will be used to continue their good work. “No person should be left on the streets and it gives us great joy to know that we can help,” said Braam Keyser, General Manager at Paarl Coldset Port Elizabeth. “The donated funds will be used to continue encouraging these youngsters through sports and adventure-based education that brings them together, providing them with a sense of belonging,” said Keyser. For more info about Khayalethu Youth Centre visit www.khayalethu.org.za.

Local artist ScottyG to release new album A LOCAL hip-hop and rap artist, ScottyG, also known as Scott Geduld, will be launching his new CD, Face of the moon, on April 7 in Port Elizabeth. Face of the moon, which features hip-hop and rap music, was produced by Hein Bosman of HB Studios. It is ScottyG’s first solo album. “I am a bit nervous, but truly humbled to share my songs with the world. The songs are introspective and personal. It goes back to me growing up on the Cape Flats and to my move to Port Elizabeth. Both provinces played a vital role in my writing and the making of my CD,” ScottyG said. He first crossed paths with Bosman when he won the 2016 PEgotbars, a rap competition founded by the music producer. The CD will be released and launched on
April 7 at the Savoy Theatre in Port Elizabeth. Admission is R50 and the CD will be for sale at R80. – REPORTER

St Theresa’s Outreach seeks community’s help REPORTER THE St Theresa’s Outreach, a registered nonprofit organisation (NPO) based in Port Elizabeth, is seeking the community’s help to make their building project in Colchester a success. St Theresa’s Outreach aims to act as a catalyst for the township community to bring the needs of the children and elderly to the attention of the appropriate departments to get them the help they need. “We would like to be the difference these people need,” said Charmane Waldner, the founder of St Theresa’s Outreach. The group is establishing a building which
will serve as a Sunday school for the local children, as well as a feeding centre for the community. “We are in need of non-perishable foods, building materials and volunteers. Those who are willing to assist but unable to contribute any of the above-mentioned things can support one of our fundraising events,” said Waldner. The next event is an Easter Fair With Flair that will take place on April 8 at the Walmer Town Hall from 9am to 3pm. The event will include an egg hunt. There are still stalls available and entry to the fair is free. For info contact Charmane on 074 249 4835 or go to www.sttheresasoutreach.co.za.

My Name is Heidi from Eastern Cape. I have been suf-fering financially for many years, I have worked as a domestic worker, earning a very minimal salary. I used to consult many traditional healers to assist in changing my life financially. I gave them all the money to finish un-finished jobs because of that I couldn’t explain to my kids where my money was going. My eldest daughter even moved out of the house because of our situation at that time. I came across a testimony from sister Jenini from Despatch, testifying about Prof. Sally that had helped her by using Magic Rats to put money in her house on the same day. I phoned sister Jenini she explai-ned to me how her life used to be, she gave me Prof Sally’s number and I contacted her, she explained to me all the options and I chose Magic Rats to put money into my shack. I was shocked when I saw the money. I contacted her and she said it was ok for me to use the money. I paid her 25% from the money I recei-ved. Now my life is debt free, my kids are back at school and I bought a new house for my family. Prof Sally can also help with Shortboys, Magic Ring for gambling, Magic Stick for money and gals, and she also finishes unfinished jobs.

ARE YOU FRUSTRATED AND DEPRESSED FINANCIALLY (DON'T lose faith, give Prof Hope a try)
Strongest Healer
My name is Reuben, am 48 years old, I stay with 4 children, for a very long time there was no happiness in my life, even my wife left me because I couldn't support my own family. I had to look after my parents. I was the only breadwinner in our family and I was working as care giver. I struggled financially my kids needed school uniforms, my parents needed help with basic needs as they are elderly. I visited different pastors, prophets and traditional healers with no one could help me. I wasted all the money, but no results, I just kept losing the little I had. I was helpless for many years, until I read a testimony of Gabriel who was testifying the good work Prof Hope did to change his life by using Short boys to put money into his account. I made an appointment with him he explained to me all the options like money rats to put money in the house on same day, short boys to put money in your Account on same day, magic ring to win money games like gambling, casino, lotto and betting. Magic wallet to multiply your money. I chose money rats to put money in my house. He explained to me the process, I couldn't believe when I received the money on the same day. I immediately contacted him and paid him 25% and my sister chose magic ring for lotto and we are financially stable, all thanks to Prof Hope. Also helps with: bring back lost lover, family matters, bring back stolen goods, bind y o u r p r o p e r t y, m a l e enlargement. Home visits AROUND Eastern Cape.

Theresa tackles a man’s job REPORTER WHEN the final whistle sounded over her career in netball, one of NMMU’s most celebrated sports managers was more than ready to “tackle” the next challenge head on. After more than 20 years at the helm of the Port Elizabeth university’s netball club, Theresa le Roux welcomed what she termed a “man’s job” with open arms and a vision when she recently took over the reins of the FNB Madibaz Rugby Club. “I acknowledged that I could not achieve anything more within netball and felt that a change of focus would offer a new opportunity,” she said. Under her astute guidance, the SPAR Madibaz Netball Club notched up notable success-

es in tertiary and club tournaments all over the country and even abroad. One of the highlights, she said, was when the “class of 2005” returned unbeaten from their tour to Birmingham in England. The Madibaz also made the Eastern Province club league their own during her stint in charge, winning it 24 times since the early nineties. Le Roux has mentored several players who went on to represent the Proteas, most notably Lana Krige, former captain Zanele Mdodana and Zanele Vimbela. Not one to dwell on the past, she said her focus was squarely on the job at hand, which came with its fair share of rucks and mauls. “Finances are always a challenge and the uncertainty surrounding Eastern Province rugby makes it difficult to recruit the right student-athletes.” However, she believed she had a vision that would put the club on the road to overcoming a number of hurdles. “I think it is important to establish a good and stable coaching and management environment to help take the club forward. “And, when it comes to development, I would like to see us making our mark in the EP Grand Challenge league as well as growing the women’s team,” she said. “Until recently, our focus has been on Varsity Cup as university teams don’t qualify to play in the national club champs.” Le Roux said her time in netball and managing other sporting codes such as cycling, basketball, volleyball, surfing and squash had taught her that it was important to go out and play for both themselves and their supporters in pursuit of establishing a winning culture. Staying true to the values that she instilled in her players, she acknowledged the importance of being a team player. “I have an excellent coaching and management team who support me. If it weren’t for them, I would have thought twice about taking this job.”
Kroneberg soccer teams are tops The u/11 and u/13 teams of Kroneberg Primary took part in a 5-a-side tournament at Van Der Kemp Primary School on March 25. VW adds onelitre engine to Polo model range REPORTER VOLKSWAGEN has expanded the offering of its best-selling Polo model range with the addition of a 1.0 litre petrol engine. Over 155 600 Polo hatch body variants have been sold in South Africa since its launch in February 2010. The popularity of Polo has been acknowledged through numerous awards which include the Wesbank South African Car of the Year title in 2011. The introduction of the 1.0 TSI engine is a precursor to Volkswagen’s small engine strategy in South Africa. The fuel efficient small capacity engines will be the main feature in Volkswagen’s future models. The three-cylinder 999cc engine will be the base engine of the new Golf which will be launched locally at the end of the second quarter. Engine performance The 1.0 TSI delivers 81kW of power at 5 000rpm. Its maximum torque of 200Nm is available from 2000 up to 3 500rpm. The sprint from 0 to 100km/h is reached in 9.3 seconds. It has a top speed of 197km/h. This engine has a frugal combined fuel economy of 4.4 litres per 100 kilometres. The exceptional fuel efficiency is enhanced by the BlueMotion Technology with Stop/Start and battery regeneration systems. The 1.0 litre TSI engine is mated to a 7-speed DSG transmission. RLine Package The 1.0 TSI with 81kW is the first Polo derivative to be offered with the exterior R-Line package. The R-Line package adds a sporty look which makes the car stand out on the road. The R-Line package includes R-Line logo on the radiator grille, front and rear bumpers, sill extensions, a sporty rear diffuser with an integrated chrome exhaust tailpipe, a rear spoiler in body colour and 17inch Serron alloy wheels. Standard features

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE
China set for Mercedes reaction FROM the quaint streets of the Albert Park circuit in Australia the Formula 1 paddock heads to the grand architecture of the Shanghai International circuit in China for the second race of the 2017 season. Remarkably, F1’s latest visit to China marks the 14th year that the Shanghai circuit has been on the calendar. There is a bit of history about the circuit too. Its inaugural race in 2004 was won by then Ferrari driver Rubens Barrichello and in 2006 Michael Schumacher scored what would be his 91st and final victory. A year later Kimi Raikkonen’s win in changeable conditions would set up an unlikely championship triumph while, in 2012, the Chinese Grand Prix was also the very first race win for the reigning champion Nico Rosberg. Nevertheless, while these stats and victories remain firmly in the history books, the 2017 crop arrives with what is still very much an era in its infancy. While Ferrari has won the first race of the season, the Shanghai International circuit demands a far different type of car performance.
For one, this circuit is far more front limited, which means that a car will need to work well with its front tyres to set competitive lap times. The tyres too will be tested more than in Australia as the Chinese circuit is far more abrasive. Tyre wear may prove to be a significant factor, especially for Mercedes. It was this issue that Lewis Hamilton singled out as the reason for his defeat by Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari. What’s more, in Australia it was clear that the Mercedes W08 is not as comfortable following other cars as the Ferrari appears to be which, by itself, can substantially influence tyre degradation and wear. However, these aren’t the only issues Mercedes are facing and the team has admitted that it needs to reduce the weight of its 2017 car. An overweight car not only costs lap time but also takes away the teams ability to position ballast in the car to aid handling. What’s more, Haas team principal Guenter Steiner thinks that Ferrari’s 2017 power unit might be on a par with that of Mercedes, if not better. The make-up of the Chinese circuit, which includes several high speed cor-
ners, and long straits, will be a good test of Steiner’s theory. But by no means is Mercedes ruled out of taking the top step of the podium this weekend. The prediction of fairly low temperatures for the race weekend will be in their favour as cooler condition will mean less overheating of their tyres. But they’ll have to work hard if they are to withstand the threat of Ferrari. For Red Bull the fight is highly unlikely to be for the podium considering the deficit of the Renault engine to that of Mercedes and Ferrari. Several critics have railed about the difficultly of overtaking in 2017. The detractors felt vindicated by the overall lack of overtaking in Australia, but Albert Park, as a semistreet circuit, is not the best barometer in this
S P F
case. While the jury is still out on what is still a fairly immature point of the season, the Shanghai International circuit, thanks to its two long straits, will offer more overtaking opportunities. It will not be definitive, but it will begin to reveal how easy or difficult overtaking will be in 2017. Since the start of the hybrid era in 2014 Mercedes have been an unstoppable juggernaut only rarely tripped up by themselves. In these three years the world has witnessed how the Mercedes team runs and conducts itself as the dominant force. At the start of 2017 they are by no means down and out, but are, at the very least, perceived to be ever so slightly on the back foot. Therefore, it will be fascinating to observe how they respond.
