PORT OF NGQURA: NEW FIVESTOREY ADMINISTRATION BUILDING

R255 mil. ‘green’ building opened

REPORTER

A

N investment boost of R255 million for the Eastern Cape Province economy, in the form of a world-class administration building, is now open for business. The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) at the Port of Ngqura has officially opened its new five-storey administration building known as eMendi. The building was revealed by TNPA Chief Executive Richard Vallihu, Chief Operating Officer Phyllis Difeto and Ngqura Port Manager Tandi Lebakeng at a special event attended by port employees recently. The name was chosen in reference to the SS Mendi troopship that sunk in the English Channel 100 years ago carrying well over 800 servicemen, the majority of whom were black South Africans. TNPA Chief Executive Richard Vallihu said the new 10 000 square metre building would cater for Ngqura’s growing human resources as the port continues to expand. “Ngqura is positioning itself as a major con-

tainer transhipment hub for sub-Saharan Africa and an important link connecting trade between South America and Asia.” Such capital expenditure forms part of TNPA’s contribution to Transnet’s Market Demand Strategy which is now in its fifth year of implementation. “This is not just a staff building but a platform for us to provide effective, efficient and economic port services at the Port of Ngqura. Transnet builds localisation into each of its contracts in order to foster economic growth and create jobs, and this project has certainly done so in the Eastern Cape,” he said. Vallihu added that other projects within a recent R700 million capacity installation investment at Ngqura included construction of the port’s administration craft basin for pilot boats and tugboats, and the vacuumbased automated mooring system which they introduced as a first for an African port. Fuel price set to drop today REPORTER FUEL prices are set for across-the-board drops today, July 5, according to the Automobile Association (AA), which was commenting on unaudited fuel price data released by the Central Energy Fund (CEF). “The Rand remained firm over the past month, apart from a brief reversal caused by the Public Protector’s controversial comments on the role of the Reserve Bank, the AA commented. “At the same time, international petroleum prices maintained their downward trajectory. According to the Department of Energy, oil prices have reached their lowest point for the year.

“This adds up to a pleasing drop in the fuel price which will be a patch of good news for many in the current economic conditions, said the AA. Petrol is set to drop by up to 69 cents a litre, diesel by 62 cents, and illumination paraffin by 58 cents. “The drop in paraffin prices will be particularly beneficial to citizens who rely on this fuel for lighting, cooking, and especially heating, in the winter months, said the Association. “As ever, even medium-term predictions of the fuel price remain difficult in the current environment of political instability and weak economic conditions. We advise all fuel users to create space in their budgets for price increases if the picture should deteriorate further.

Ngqura Port’s ‘green’ building opened Continued from page 1 Ngqura Port Manager Tandi Lebakeng said the new administration building was still on track for a four-star green rating from the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA). “We are very proud of this truly world-class building that is poised to become one of the premier ‘green’ buildings in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality,” she said. The Green building concepts incorporated in the design include rainwater harvesting, solar panels and light motion sensors in certain areas. The building’s large window areas allow it to take advantage of the port’s panoramic views and natural lighting flowing into the building thereby reducing the need for electrical lighting. Lebakeng explained that 154 jobs had been created during the construction phase of the admin building and admin craft basin. “Forty eight of these jobs have been created for black youth, while 285 Eastern Cape employees are also benefiting from skills development programmes associated with these projects. “In addition, 15 SMMEs in the Eastern Cape have been engaged to provide materials, equipment and services which is a further injection into the local economy,” she said. A lime kiln, dating back some 65 years, is lo-

University officially relaunches name in July REPORTER JUST two days after the world will mark what would have been former President Nelson Mandela’s 99th birthday on July 18, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) will relaunch itself as Nelson Mandela University – the only higher education institution in the world to bear the name of one of the world’s most revered leaders. The launch of Nelson Mandela University is another important milestone in the journey the university set when it adopted the institutional Vision 2020. This vision enjoined the institution’s leaders to work relentlessly towards building a new generation, dynamic African university, recognised for its leadership in producing cuttingedge knowledge for a sustainable future. The hard work has resulted in the university being granted permission to establish the country’s 10th medical school and in helping it establish the country’s only dedicated Ocean Sciences campus. These two important developments were followed by gazetting the institution’s new name by Higher Education and Training Minister Dr Blade Nzimande last year. The new name, Nelson Mandela University, will be officially used from the second semester of this year. A celebratory event is planned for July 20 at the university’s Missionvale Campus. The new name came at a time of forced introspection as a nation, particularly within the higher education sector, of the progress made in the two decades of South Africa’s democracy towards the realisation of a nonracial and just society. “The power of education extends beyond the development of skills we need for economic success. It can contribute to nationbuilding and reconciliation … We need a system … that is geared to the realities of our

country and the ideals of our people,” President Mandela said at the Education Africa Presidential and Premier Education Awards ceremony in 1997. Therefore, this call to action underscores the university’s long-held desire to honour Mandela’s legacy of advancing education as “the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. Outgoing NMMU vice-chancellor Prof Derrick Swartz said, “We are hugely honoured and privileged to bear the name of one of the world’s greatest icons – a man whose humble beginnings, values and hopes resonate with our own hopes for a transformed and better future for all. It was the former statesman himself who highlighted the key role of universities as ‘agents central to renewal’.” Requests to change the institution’s name to Nelson Mandela University were initially made before the merger of the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE), Port Elizabeth Technikon (PE Tech) and the city’s Vista University campus to form NMMU in 2005. The request was not granted earlier for various reasons. The university said in a media statement, that plans to launch the new name officially in October last year were delayed by the #FeesMustFall student protests, which highlighted students’ struggles in financing their higher education and, among other things, the need to transform the curriculum. This obstacle, however, presented an opportunity to launch the new name at a time when there is tangible progress in addressing the concerns raised by the #FeesMustFall movement which had long been on the institution’s radar. The launch of Nelson Mandela University will not only be a celebration of the efforts to be named after this great leader, but of the university’s commitment to transformation and truly living out its values, which include Ubuntu, integrity and respect for diversity.

Die merrie was baie honger, sĂŞ hy.

Inspired employees create new hope for cancer patients ANIKA DE BEER “IT is no longer strange to have patients in the chemo room with an empty stomach or patients, who are suffering from severe symptoms, forced to cancel appointments because they do not have the fees for transport.” These are the words of Lydia van Eck, a chemo sister at Cancercare’s Langenhoven Drive Oncology Centre. Van Eck is able to sympathise with her patients in a unique way as she was diagnosed with cancer herself last year and had to face a double mastectomy. She said that while she was in hospital, she realised how fortunate she was to be alive, have access to the best medical care and have a medical aid that covered the expense of her treatment. “Although most of the patients at the Cancercare Oncology Unit in Langenhoven Drive have medical aids, the financial situation of

many of the patients has changed considerably over the past few years. More and more patients lack the funds for the most basic necessities – a cancer process requires unplanned expenses not covered by the medical aids. Many patients cannot afford even basic pain medication,” she said. Van Eck then decided to become involved in the plight of cancer patients who struggle financially and the Veronica Minnie Cancer Support Trust came to mind. Cancercare started the Veronica Minnie Cancer Support Trust (CancerAssist) to assist deserving or disadvantaged cancer patients by providing care, counselling and practical support. “Worldwide, one in eight deaths is due to cancer. It causes more deaths than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined,” said Mariana Lourens, Cancercare social worker. “Patients are referred to our unit’s social workers who ensure that assistance is only given to those in real financial need. The ob-

jective is to assist them during their treatment process. Where possible, patients are referred to community resources for a more sustainable service.” They are currently raising funds by selling teddy bear broaches with a little heart on its chest, called Care Bears. The various colours of the heart represent the different types of cancer. According to Joleen Beling, Medical Administration Supervisor for Cancercare, they have been selling Care Bears for about three months and have made R20 000 for the Veronica Minnie Cancer Support Trust. Care Bears are sold at R10 each and are available on 041 450 1302 or at Cancercare’s office situated in Mangold Street, Newton Park. ; These Care Bears are sold to raise funds for the Veronica Minnie Cancer Support Trust.

Denzil Levy turned 100 years old on June 28, which made him the oldest living Old Grey. He joined Grey in 1931 and graduated in the class of 1934. Levy attended a celebratory function in the Centenary Pavilion at Grey to commemorate the extraordinary event and was joined by members of the Jewish community in Port Elizabeth. A group of young people from Motherwell NU5 recently completed their intensive training in first aid at the Eastern Cape College of Emergency Care. The training enables them to assist with life-threatening situations in their community. The venture is the brainchild of Ward Councillor Mazangwandile Dano, pioneered by two individuals from PE Metro Ambulance Services, to equip the unemployed youth for the job market and keep them off the streets. Awardwinning dancer wants to uplift local youth THANDI SETOKOE HE discovered his love of dance in his early childhood and is now using the passion he grew and nurtured to empower and uplift young people. Port Elizabeth-born ballet dancer Dane Hurst always had a dream to make a name for himself abroad one day. Fourteen years later he’s an international award-winning choreographer living in London. Now back in his home town, the St Thomas High School alumnus,

together with professional dance teachers have dedicated their afternoons to providing free dance and photography workshops for over 80 disadvantaged learners in the northern areas. “This is really what our lives are about,” Hurst said. “With privilege and success comes responsibility, a duty to give back and give someone else the chance and opportunity that so many of us take for granted. I’m so excited to be a part of something truly great.” The workshops are aimed at helping young people escape the streets. “When young people are kept busy, there is less chance for them to engage in social ills.” Hurst added that in most cases children from disadvantaged backgrounds tend to feel a sense of unworthiness. “We want to show these kids that greatness is achievable, that one’s upbringing and circumstances don’t determine one’s future. “When I was growing up, there was a guy who lived in my street who was a dancer. He won competitions and then got a scholarship to go to London. That made it possible for me to say I also want to live in London and I also want to provide for my family. He showed me that it’s possible.” Hurst explained that bringing professionals to come teach the children goes a long way in terms of giving the dance profession credibility. “What is important for these children is for them to have role

When you tell a child to come to dance classes after school so as to get them off the streets, they won’t understand, but when you put a professional in front of them, you make it tangible for them to believe that it is possible.” The need for Hurst to share his skills with youth from underprivileged areas resulted in him establishing an organisation called the Moving Assembly Project (MPA) in 2016.

The project is aimed at connecting people from diverse backgrounds and communities from all corners of the world and provides access to high-quality training and performance. Last year the organisation held a two-week dance workshop at the Ubuntu Health and Education Centre in Zwide. “Next year with more funding we want to offer singing, computer programming and film-making.

The idea is to create an art centre eventually at a place that is accessible, preferably a travelling studio so that we can engage children from all around the Eastern Cape,” Hurst said. He has brought with him dancers from Poland and England, and together with some local dancers they are preparing a dance piece themed Who Are We? which will be staged at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival.

Early Inspiration makes a change in NMB youth education REPORTER RESEARCH showed that 73 early childhood development (ECD) centres in Nelson Mandela Bay’s developing communities that received intervention from Early Inspiration during 2016/17 reflected an average of 15% improvement in terms of centre compliance. “A total of 124 passionate, dedicated practitioners from Nelson Mandela Bay, that work or volunteer in ECD centres and grade R classrooms, took part in our level two skills programme,” said Early Inspiration MD, Dr Lauren Stretch. “Each underwent a stringent selection process and participated in a holistic programme to improve their skills to improve the development of children under their care.” Each trainee attended a range of training modules, received on-site visits, had extensive evaluations and mentorship sessions in their ECD centre; and completed a portfolio of evidence which includes formative and summative assessment tasks, testing know-ledge and understanding, as well as implementation of the skills learnt. Early Inspiration, a project of the non-profit organisation (NPO) KICK, is dedicated to enhancing young children’s intellectual development. They provided support and capacitation of ECD Centre principals and practitioners across Nelson Mandela Bay to keep them up to date on trends, strategies, policies and new opportunities for professional development.

With children of the Ikamva Day Care Centre are Dr Lauren Stretch (Early Inspiration MD), Nilakhe Balani (ECD Practitioner) and Colleen Koesnell (Early Inspiration Facilitator and Special Needs Support Co-ordinator). PHOTO: SUPPLIED Early Inspiration also evaluated children attending the schools whose teachers participated in the programme to measure the development and direct benefits of the intervention. “Provincially, the greatest element of growth in children under the care of programme educators during the course of the year, was cognitive development. The results are a great reflection of the improvement in the development of the brain and an accurate reflection of the remarkable impact that quality, intentional intervention can have on young children.” Through the child assessments, atrisk children were identified to provide one-on-one interventions which

are child-specific and meet the identified need. Home visits adopt a non-centre- based approach to intervention where education not only happens in the ECD centre, but also that parents are capacitated on understanding their children’s brain growth, needs and way of learning. “The six-month home visit programme focusses on one-on-one support and stimulation to assist children in becoming developmentally appropriate and achieve age-related goals,” said Stretch. The children who were at risk made significant improvements where 79% of the children scored between 81% and 100% post-assessment.

Ford honours top NMMU academic achievers REPORTER FORD Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) continues to honour top achievers at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) by sponsoring the annual Ford Premier Award, as it has done since 2001. Master’s Degree graduate Yonela Dube (30) was presented with the Ford Premier Award at the university’s academic awards for 2016, which took place at The Tramways Building in Port Elizabeth on June 22. For her Master of Technology: Human Resources Management dissertation, Dube studied the influence that authentic leadership has on the engagement levels of employees. “I would like to thank Ford for sponsoring the award and the NMMU for the recognition,” Dube said. “I must also thank my promoter, Dr Amanda Wer-ner, for her expertise and continuous support. I am thankful for the wonderful support received from my family,

friends and work colleagues. “I gained a lot of knowledge while studying for my Master’s and learnt so much through the journey. Receiving the award is an honour and a wonderful way to end an incredible journey. I am forever grateful.” Her research included literature studies that highlighted the characteristics and behaviours of authentic leadership, and on employee engagement. For the empirical study, an electronic questionnaire was administered to managers and their direct subordinates in a manufacturing company, focusing on two divisions, namely, marketing/sales and manufacturing. “Authenticity is a leadership characteristic of exceptional leaders and it is an essential requirement for future leaders in an era when the motives and behaviours of many leaders are questionable,” she explained. According to Dube, the results from the study revealed that the managers displayed the characteristics and behaviours of authentic leaders and that the employees were

engaged. The results also revealed that the employees believed that managers did not request feedback of their behaviour and the managers believed that the employees indicated lack of knowledge about their roles, lack of passion and energy. Other findings showed that selfawareness in a leader is an important predictor of engagement. The study concluded with several recommendations such as the use of the 360° feedback for employees to give feedback to managers regarding their behaviour, using the GIVE (Goals, Interests, Values and Emotions) Model to facilitate self-awareness for the managers and lastly applying an appreciative inquiry in the organisation for the development of genuine relationships, in order to encourage employee engagement. While Dube is originally from Kokstad in KwaZulu-Natal, she is continuing her journey with NMMU and is working as an associate lecturer at the School for Industrial Psychology and Human Resources.

Rub shoulders with Gru, Minion at The Boardwalk

Local initiative goes all out for Mandela Day

REPORTER

REPORTER

FANS of the blockbuster franchise Despicable Me are in for an exciting treat at The Boardwalk today, July 5, when Gru and one of his Minions, Mel, venture to the complex to meet their fans and promote Despicable Me 3’s cinematic launch in South Africa.

THE Re-Trade Project, a community-based recycling and social empowerment project, is planning to celebrate Mandela Day on July 18 in style and invite the public to join them.

Buoyed by the response to the Minions’ roadshow to promote their movie Minions in 2015, The Boardwalk is looking forward to welcoming fans, young and old, in large numbers. Fans will get to meet the famed Despicable Me characters and even have their photos taken with them. South African movie fans have loved these charismatic characters since they made their debut in the first hit animation, Despicable Me. In June 2017, Gru, Lucy and the girls return for a globe-hopping adventure featuring new characters and some big surprises. There is a new super villain on the scene whose exploits cause Lucy and Gru to lose their jobs. The Minions, who are desperate for a life of crime, decide to leave Gru and go off in search of a new Big Boss. It is also discovered that Gru

The project, which was founded in 2014, aims to educate local communities about eco-sustainability and restoring the environment through public recycling depots. The Re-Trade Project works primarily as a recycling buyback centre where individuals are given the opportunity to purchase necessities such as food, toiletries and household items in exchange for recyclable goods. Through this value-for-value system, they aim to assist disadvantaged individuals who are in need of basic human essentials. Traders collect the recyclable goods, like plastic bottles, tins and paper, and take them to Fountain Vineyard Church at specific times where volunteers help them assess the recyclable materials. They are then awarded points for clean and sorted re-

Despicable Me 3 promises audiences plenty of new story, new characters, new plot twists and Despicable Me sibling rivalry de-

cyclables which can be used to purchase goods in the Re-Trade Store. The recyclable materials are then collected by Recycle Yourself and the proceeds are used to purchase new stock for the store. On Mandela Day the ReTrade Project will host a Recycling Open Day and Beach Clean-up, giving residents the opportunity to spend their traditional 67 minutes of volunteering or community service in aid of a local initiative. The Recycling Open Day will take place at The Re-Trade Project store in Newcombe Avenue, Walmer Heights, where one can visit the shop where the core of their business takes place. They also encouraged people to clean their local beaches or join them at Schoenmakerskop opposite Sacramento Restaurant between 1pm and 2pm. Also forming part of their Mandela Day campaign is a Food Drive where businesses can collect 67 items of food by July 18 to donate it to their store. He explained to me that there were many different ways of finding success. So I went ahead and chose the short boys. I followed all his instructions and I was suprised to see bundles of money. I have bever seein so much money in my life, I then counted out his 10% to thank him for his job well done. I am Rhoda from Njoli, I am 49 years old. 100% GEWAARBORG OF JOU GELD TERUG

Ek is Lerato.

Elufefeni represents EC at national competition SELBY MADIKANE

SELBY MADIKANE

MOTHERWELL school Elufefeni Primary will keep the flag of the Eastern Cape Province flying high during the National Schools Environment Competition at Badgewood in Boksburg from July 10 to 13. Elufefeni Primary School Environment Club (Enviro Club) initially won the provincial competition in the theme “Wash Your Hands” in the poetry category. According to Elufefeni Primary principal, Amanda Ntsumpa, the journey to national stage started at regional level where her school came out tops under the mentorship of Liziwe Kate. Enviro Club members recited poems to demonstrate how to wash one’s hands without wasting water. “Our Enviro Club, that comprises of members Ayava Hola and Anezwa Mangqasana who are both in Grade 6, are trained by Kate. The provincial eliminations took place in Bhisho on June 22 and 23. Our Enviro Club stole the show because they were the most creative school. “Kate has a passion for what she is doing and she is very committed and dedicated. Our drama team came second, but it is only winners that will participate in the national competition. “Last year Kate and our Enviro Club won the national schools environment competition. I want to thank Kate because she is one of our assets.” Kate said that the teamwork at her school was one of the main reasons for their success. “Our staff, SGB and the parents really supported us. I am very proud of them.

WELLS United, that are popularly known as Amataliyane, used their first-half wind advantage to claim a comfortable 2-0 victory over FC Angels in their MOFA Premier League clash at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday.

Our Enviro Club is focused and ready for action.” Principal Ntsumpa thanked the learners, staff, parents, SGB and Ward Councillor Mncedisi Mbuqu for rendering their support to their Enviro Club. “I want to give my special thanks to our learner transporters for their financial support. They provided funds for the school to hire transport for supporters to accompany our Enviro Club to Boksburg. They have made a huge difference because the majority of our learners hail from the poor area of Motherwell NU 29,” concluded Ntsumpa.

Less fortunate kids given opportunity at Woodridge Rugby Union Day SELBY MADIKANE KWAZAKHELE community rugby development’s Wankie Ezee Fana Dlula has once again given an opportunity to less fortunate children from the dusty fields of KwaZakhele and New Brighton to play in the Woodridge Rugby Union Day on July 8. According to Ezee Fana, the rugby day programme was the proper platform to erase the bad memories caused by the recent veld fires that gutted some of the buildings at Woodridge College. Ezee Fana said, “The games will bring joy to the learners of Woodridge. Sport is a tool to unite people and it brings joy.” Coaching clinics will be held on July 6 and 7 at Woodridge. The schools that will play in the Woodridge Rugby Union Day are Seyisi Primary, Inkqubela Primary, Kayser Ngxwana Primary (all from KwaZakhele), Pendla Primary (from New Brighton), Thornhill Primary, Morningside High (from Linton Grange) and Ithembelihle High (from New Brighton) as well as Ezee Fana Development Teams. Wankie Dlula runs the rugby development project at schools in New Brighton and KwaZakhele under the banner of the Ezee Fana Development Programme. His passion for sport has saved many young persons from a life of drug abuse and crime. Ezee dedicates most of his time in community youth sport development without remu-

Wells United uses wind advantage to beat FC Angels

Playing with the wind behind their backs Amataliyane (Italians) applied more pressure on Angels. Wells kept Angels in their own territory as they were searching for their opening goal. Amataliyane’s seasoned wing, Lucas Rhuu Mgushe, found the back of the net in the 23rd minute, giving his side a 1-0 lead. Wells left wing Siyabulela Gotyana rubbed salt into the wounds of Angels when he banged in a spectacular goal in the 43rd minute after Rhuu Mgushe whipped in a perfect cross. Wells went to the half-time leading 2-0. In the second half, Angels could not score goals because Wells’ defence was very tight. The Wells team defended in numbers and as a result the Angels for-

wards could not penetrate the defence of Amataliyane. Wells utility defender Lulamile Ruu Mzayiya kept Angels star player Athenkosi Taaibos at bay. Wells defence was very solid as they denied the Angels forwards. To the dismay of the spectators, the game between Manchester FC and Manchester United did not produce the fireworks that was expected. It was instead a very physical game. The referee, who could not coordinate with only one assistant referee, failed to control the game. The game between these two sides ended in a goalless draw. The fans were upset after the referee, who alleged that he was verbally abused by one of Young Tigers’ technical members, decided to call off the game between Young Tigers and Young Romans. Albany, PE North claim victory in u/15 Regional Programme SELBY MADIKANE ALBANY and PE North collected silverware during the EP High Schools Rugby Qhawe u/15 Regional Programme that took place at Zwide Stadium from June 30 to July 1. According to the EP High Schools Rugby Qhawe u/15 team manager Bruce Stowman, the aim of the programme is to select players that come from previously disadvantaged communities. “These games give the less fortunate players an opportunity to showcase their talent. Some of the players hail from rural areas. We selected a team that consists of players who are consistent and disciplined in their play as well as dedicated. It was very difficult to select a team because many of these players have shown a lot of character, but the team has been chosen. I am very pleased with the standard of the games that were played,” Stowman said. “I would like to thank the SA Legends for making this programme possible because they have provided us with financial assistance. I would also like to thank Jesse Kriel for his contribution

as far as this programme is concerned.” The Albany region stole the show by winning all the games convincingly. Albany went home with a floating trophy and gold medals while the PE North side received silver medals for their outstanding performance. Both teams did not taste any defeat. According to EP High Schools Rugby Chairman, Willem October, the team that has been selected will take part in the National Qhawe Rugby Schools Tournament in Johannesburg during the September schools holiday. The technical team consists of head coach Luvuyo Sompondo, assistant coach George Lamani and team manager Bruce Stowman. The schools will be informed of the players who have been selected. African Bombers dominate Wallabies SELBY MADIKANE ONE of the township’s oldest rugby sides, African Bombers, dominated Gelvan Wallabies when they claimed a well-deserved 28-13 victory in their EP Super League B game that was played at Zwide Stadium. Wallabies knew right from the start that Bombers play their hearts out on their home turf. Bombers had the upper hand as they put the visitors on their back foot. The home side were awarded a penalty that was kicked through the goal posts by flyhalf Siyabonga

Ngcaba in the 11th minute. The visitors eaqualised with a penalty kick that was taken by full back Dylan Fouche in the 19th minute. Bombers flank forward Ryan Staltz scored a beautiful try that Ngcaba failed to convert in the 38th minute. The first-half score was 8-3 in favour of Bombers. Bombers were like a house on fire as they kept on attacking. Thandolwethu “Kolisi” Ngcoza came up with an unconverted try for Bombers that increased their lead to 13-3 in the 51st minute. Ngcaba also scored a try in the 57th minute making Bombers’ lead 18-3. Wallabies came back strongly to score their

opening try courtesy of Preston Statoe in the 60th minute. They decreased the score deficit to 18-8. The hosts soon wiped the smiles from the faces of the Wallabies team with Luvuyo Ngxeba scoring an unconverted try in the 64th minute. Bombers’ Man of the Match Ryan Staltz scored his second try that increased the Zwide side’s lead to 28-8 in the 72nd minute. Eagoan Williams scored Wallabies’ last unconverted try in the 76th minute with the final score 28 -13 in favour of African Bombers. In the reserves section, Bombers went down 33-14 to Wallabies.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

Advantage Mercedes in Austria FROM the confines of Baku City, the Formula 1 teams move to the sprawling vista of Austria for the ninth round of the 2017 championship. Situated in Spielberg, the Red Bull Ring is a short circuit consisting of nine corners in total. These corners are linked with several long

straights and although it may be a power-dominant circuit, its layout allows more than a few good spots for overtaking. “At any kind of power circuit like Austria you want to be smooth and get good exits in order to give yourself the best chance on the long straights,” said Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo. “The compromise is always the aero package.

In the middle to the end of the lap, you want more downforce because the corners are quite fast, but more downforce means you are slower on the straights, so the key is to find a good balance throughout the lap.” The Austrian circuit is of course owned by Red Bull which makes the weekend all the more important for the team. Ironically the layout of the Red Bull Ring and its demand on engine power has never been a Renault strong suit. Nevertheless, a minor upgrade, brought by Renault in Baku, has moved them slightly forward in terms of ultimate power output. What’s more, both Red Bulls ran relatively well in Baku, which is similar in its demands on the power unit. It is perhaps unlikely that Ricciardo or Verstappen could, on pure pace, beat either Mercedes or Ferrari but likewise, they’ll likely not be challenged by either Williams or Force India who traditionally perform well at low drag circuits. Red Bull and their drivers are probably the most canny drivers on the grid and they will be close enough to snatch up any positions should something go awry. The Pirelli tyre compounds available this weekend, the ultra- and supersoft, would ordinarily play to the strength of Ferrari. While they’ll still likely fair better on the ultrasoft compound, the low level of degradation will limit any creativity on pit stop strategies. What’s more, the ultrasoft tyre is effectively last year’s supersoft tyre and on a

circuit where drivers made do with a one-stopper in 2016, it’s unlikely that any one team will carry a significant advantage. The FIA had announced a re-investigation of Vettel’s behaviour in Baku during which he turned his Ferrari into the side of Hamilton’s Mercedes behind the safety car. While the outcome of the re-investigation was not known at the time of going to print, it will be an important weekend for the Ferrari driver regardless. As it stands Vettel still remains in the lead of the championship but there’s no denying that Canada and Baku were messy races, which have somewhat stalled Ferrari’s momentum. This will not be an easy weekend for Ferrari either. The circuit layout means that Mercedes start the weekend as clear favourites and you can bet that the media will still be posing questions about the Baku incident. In fact, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if Ferrari institutes a media blackout on their drivers this weekend. Whatever your opinion of Vettel’s behaviour and what sort of punishment he does, or does not deserve, he must deliver this weekend. The best way to put the last race behind him and to control the story is by delivering on track. It won’t be easy though. Hamilton and Mercedes not only start the weekend as clear favourites and without the incessant and uncomfortable attention of the media, but, vitally, with a sort of momentum that can quickly become ominous.

Feel the Pulse with new improved Toyota Yaris REPORTER

The new and improved Toyota Yaris Pulse.

AFTER breaking cover at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, the new Toyota Yaris is now on sale in SA in a revised range that offers customers greater choice and improved equipment specifications across the board. To signify new life being injected into the range, Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has badged the updated Yaris as Pulse across the range. It sports a more dynamic exterior styling and a higher quality cabin. TSAM Vice President of Marketing Glenn Crompton said, “In the revised Yaris range, Toyota has adopted new styling that is set to add further impetus to the competitive small hatchback segment. The car’s new exterior styling, with significant changes to the front and rear, presents a more active and dynamic look while also communicating a more refined direction.” Customers have a choice of three unicolour tones, including Glacier White, Satin Silver Metallic and Cosmic Blue, or bi-tones (paired with black roofs), including Pearl White 2-Tone, Grey 2-Tone and Cinnabar Red 2-Tone. Increased customer choice extends to a new 1.5-litre petrol engine, which delivers 12% more power and torque than the previous 1.3-litre engine, yet also posts an improvement of up to 12% in fuel economy. Where the hybrid model is concerned, engineers have focused on achieving an even quieter ride, particularly under acceleration, introducing a raft of measures including new engine mounts, roll restrictor, front drive shafts and subframe. The design of the new engine mounts and adjustments to the shock absorbers and electric power steering have also improved the hybrid’s ride comfort and steering accuracy. Toyota’s approach to the Yaris Pulse is not just about improving the car but also creating a stronger model range that is designed to meet the requirements and preferences of a wider and increasingly more selective customer base. The new model is presented with a new grade strategy that targets distinct qualities, from value for money to contemporary style and elegance. Design Design updates focus on a more active and dynamic look with increased refinement, with emphasis on horizontal lines and stronger three-dimensional architecture, projecting a wide vehicle stance and low centre of gravity. The Yaris Pulse sports new front end displays “catamaran” shape architecture, with new headlight units, new grille designs and simplified treatment of the area around the central Toyota emblem. Design updates also include new lower door mouldings that emphasise the new Yaris Pulse’s athletic profile, a new tailgate, rear light clusters and bumper and new cabin upholsteries, trims and colour choices. ) Exterior Design The redesign of the front of the car features a new front bumper that creates a “catamaran” shape with broad sections flowing down from new headlight units, flanking the wide, trapezoidal grille.

The result is a more pronounced three-dimensional effect, and the sense of a wider, more planted road stance. A simplified design in the area around the central Toyota emblem adds to the overall dynamic impact. The grille itself benefits from new treatments that contribute to the Yaris Pulse’s more resolute look, with an arrangement of “stepped” horizontal bars that deliver a more eye-catching, 3D effect. The integrated fog light housings either side of the grille have also been reworked with a more compact recess and a vertical line that arcs smoothly to follow the outer edge of the bumper – featuring bright chrome trim detail on higher grade models. The new headlamp units further develop the qualities of the frontal design, producing a new lighting signature that expresses confidence and individuality. The most striking detail is around the main lamp, where a distinctive forked pattern is created using slim chrome trim bars within the unit. At the rear the added sense of refinement and the appearance of a broader stance is created by a new tailgate design that extends the horizontal emphasis with new rear light clusters that stretch from the rear wings to the door. Following the same concept as the new fron-

tal design, a “catamaran” architecture has also been created at the rear with a new bumper design that harmonises perfectly with the lines of the tailgate, projecting a low centre of gravity and wide on-road stance. The powerful quality of this design is supported by re-shaping the area framing the licence plate and the addition of black garnish details in the lower bumper, edged with a reflector and finished with a pattern of horizontal lines. ) Interior design The focus for changes to Yaris Pulse’s interior has been to keep the look and ambience of the cabin feeling fresh and modern, introducing new upholsteries, colours and trim details and upgrading the instrumentation and controls to ensure excellent ergonomics. Changes to the interior promote a more modern feel, in particular with new colours, trims and improvements to the instruments and controls. Interior trim is a fashionable black and light grey on all models with the exception of the generously specced Yaris Pulse Plus CVT, which features a black trim. The three-spoke steering wheel has a new look and boasts the addition of piano black trim inserts. A new chrome trim frames the combi-

meter, adding to the more refined effect. Other detail changes include new propellerstyle air vents, seamless execution of the multimedia screen and controls in the centre console, including new switches that are both neater in appearance and easier to operate. Dynamic performance A testament to what Toyota can do to a naturally aspirated engine to make it more fuel-efficient, is imbueing it with a high thermal efficiency value: 38,5%. In addition, the new 1.5-litre engine is now also part of the ESTEC (Economy with Superior Thermal Efficient Combustion) engine family. It runs on a high compression ratio (13.5) and a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system. Last but certainly not least, the 2017 Yaris 1.5 benefits from something called VVT-iE, with iE standing for “Intelligent System Electric motor.” This allows the phase shift of the intake camshaft to be controlled electrically, whereas the phase shift of the exhaust camshaft is hydraulic. Yaris Pulse remains the only local car in its segment available with hybrid power. Toyota has taken extra measures with the new model to improve the hybrid driving experience, introducing a new subframe, engine mounts, front drive shafts and roll restrictor that make it even quieter and smoother, particularly under acceleration. The choice of powertrains is completed by the established 1.0-litre VVT-i three-cylinder petrol engine with five-speed manual transmission. Warranty, service plan and pricing All the Toyota Yaris models are offered with a 3-year/45 000km service plan and a 3-year/100 000km warranty. 1.0 Pulse MT - R199 000 1.5 Pulse MT - R228 700 1.5 Pulse CVT - R241 400 1.5 Pulse Plus CVT - R249 600 Hybrid - R307 200

REPORTER THE popular JBay Winterfest, set to take place from July 12 to July 23, has an amazing line-up of events, which include the Championship Tour surfing, JBay Logger Classic – a mountain bike event, a night trail running event and more. The Corona Open JBay is for the elite Championship Tour of surfing, the best competitive surfers in the world, and it takes place at the legendary Supertubes. Defending champion Mick Fanning from Australia will be present along with current world champion John Florence from Hawaii. With a healthy number of international entries for the contest, the JBay Logger Classic promises to bring something fresh to the festival with a groovy rendition of style-orientated surfing at the Lower Point. South Africa will be represented by two-time event winner and current third-ranked surfer in the world, Jordy Smith from Durban, as well as the winner of the JBU Supertrial, Dale Staples from St Francis Bay, who will be surfing in the competition on the wildcard that he won for his victory in the trials tournament. Now in its fifth edition, the JBay Windfarm MTB Classic will once again offer something for all mountain bike skill and fitness levels, featuring a 25km fun ride, 50km marathon and 85km ultra. The top three women from 2016 will be back to battle for the podium. This includes three-time winner and defending champion Anriëtte Schoeman. The event will showcase the finest trail riding the Eastern Cape has to offer. Riders taking part in all three routes will be racing through the Jeffreys Bay

Wind Farm, riding along roads that are interspersed by 80m tall wind turbine towers, spread more than 500m apart. The most exciting prospect of the 2017 event is that the 85km ultra will feature an all-new route with spectacular new single track. The event runs from Kabeljouws parking lot where there will be a race village setup. The Endurade JBay X Trail Run has grown in leaps and bounds and 2017 looks to be the breakthrough year for this race. The run is unique in concept, entailing three individual 20km trail runs, all starting 12-hours apart, showcasing the best of the Jeffreys Bay area. The total distance covered will be just over 60km. A 10km and 5km fun trail run or walk will be presented on Sunday, July 23, starting at 9am and 10am respectively. Both these events will be suitable for families, friends, supporters and firsttime trail runners. This year the race organisers are proud to announce that the golden couple of SA trail running, Landie and Christiaan Greyling, will not only present a trail running workshop at the 2017 Endurade JBayX trail run, but they will also take part in the race. The workshop will take place on Friday, July 21 at 5.30pm. The workshop, made possible by Sea Whisper Guest House, will have Landie and Christiaan share personal experiences, tips and advice on training, gear, nutrition and more, as well as answering trail running questions. Other happenings at the JBay Winterfest 2017 include the Cold Water Swim Classic, the Kite Festival, the Skins Fishing Comp, the Funduro and more. More details at www.jbaywinterfest.com.

One of the competitors, Wade Young, is currently ranked one of the world’s best hard Enduro Riders, while Blake Gutzeit just won the World Junior Enduro Cross title. Both these riders will be going head to head with local stars such as Timmy Young who, with his home town advantage, will be pushing hard for the win. In addition to the racing excitement, there will be food for sale, a beer tent and live entertainment for the whole family. Racing will start at 8:30am and entry is R20 per car at the gate. For more info contact Rover Secretary Yolande Joosten on 078 641 8087.
