MISS MATRIC DANCE 2017: TAMIA SAULS
And the winner is . . . TANYA VAN ZYL
A
FTER months of searching for our Miss Matric Dance of 2017, the winner was finally crowned last Wednesday.
She is the humble and beautiful Tamia Sauls from Alexander Road High School, who bowled the judges over with her stunning dress and overall look for her matric dance in the Percy Walker Hall at Alexander Road. Her dance was held on August 5. She was crowned the fourth Miss Matric Dance winner during an informal movie afternoon at NuMetro at Walmer Park Shopping Centre (read more about the movie afternoon on page 13). Tamia found the design for her dress while browsing through famous designers’ dresses
on the internet. “I wanted a mystic champagne dress with an open back,” she said. Her dress was made by Braemore Design, who tweaked the original design of the dress a bit and designed a new pattern for the back of the dress. Her hair was done by Selmone from Newton Park, her make-up was done by Tasmia from Fiona Beauty in Newton Park and her photographer was Basheer Britz from Black Out Photography. According to Tamia, she started planning for her matric dance in May, but she already bought her shoes in Cape Town in April this year. “My matric dance was very unexpected. “We don’t know the theme of the dance, so it is a complete surprise when we entered the hall. The theme was Egypt and the Grade 11s performed different dances and they really went all out,” Tamia recalled of her special night. She added that she enjoyed the matric dance more than the afterparty. “Overall I really enjoyed it – I could do it all over again!” She was accompanied to her dance by her best friend of the past five years, Brad Franse. Her mother encouraged her to enter the PE Express Miss Matric Dance competition. “I also attended someone else’s matric farewell two weeks after mine, and my partner’s mother also told me I must enter the competition.” She said she never expected to come this far in the competition. “I didn’t even expect to be a finalist, never mind winning the competition. “The moment when I was announced as the winner, I
just sat there and the people next to me told me that I had won. “I was completely shell-shocked – it was very overwhelming,” she explained. Tamia was a prefect at Alexander Road this year and she also played for the school’s first hockey team, of which she was the captain. She was also the vice-captain of the Protea spirit house, she was part of the school band for five years and she was on the matric yearbook portfolio committee. Her favourite subject at school was history and she said this will help her when she starts studying for a law degree at NMU next year, where she has been provisionally accepted. In her free time, she enjoys watching television and going to the gym. “I like to gym because I am very sporty and active,” she said. Her advice for next year’s matriculants attending a matric dance? “When it comes to designing or choosing your own
dress, choose something that will make you feel special, not someone else. And don’t try to make everything perfect – something will go wrong somewhere, so just enjoy the day. “Go with someone who will make your night special, so that when you look back after 10 years, you don’t regret anything!”
