MISS MATRIC DANCE 2017: TAMIA SAULS

And the winner is . . . TANYA VAN ZYL

A

FTER months of searching for our Miss Matric Dance of 2017, the winner was finally crowned last Wednesday.

She is the humble and beautiful Tamia Sauls from Alexander Road High School, who bowled the judges over with her stunning dress and overall look for her matric dance in the Percy Walker Hall at Alexander Road. Her dance was held on August 5. She was crowned the fourth Miss Matric Dance winner during an informal movie afternoon at NuMetro at Walmer Park Shopping Centre (read more about the movie afternoon on page 13). Tamia found the design for her dress while browsing through famous designers’ dresses

on the internet. “I wanted a mystic champagne dress with an open back,” she said. Her dress was made by Braemore Design, who tweaked the original design of the dress a bit and designed a new pattern for the back of the dress. Her hair was done by Selmone from Newton Park, her make-up was done by Tasmia from Fiona Beauty in Newton Park and her photographer was Basheer Britz from Black Out Photography. According to Tamia, she started planning for her matric dance in May, but she already bought her shoes in Cape Town in April this year. “My matric dance was very unexpected. “We don’t know the theme of the dance, so it is a complete surprise when we entered the hall. The theme was Egypt and the Grade 11s performed different dances and they really went all out,” Tamia recalled of her special night. She added that she enjoyed the matric dance more than the afterparty. “Overall I really enjoyed it – I could do it all over again!” She was accompanied to her dance by her best friend of the past five years, Brad Franse. Her mother encouraged her to enter the PE Express Miss Matric Dance competition. “I also attended someone else’s matric farewell two weeks after mine, and my partner’s mother also told me I must enter the competition.” She said she never expected to come this far in the competition. “I didn’t even expect to be a finalist, never mind winning the competition. “The moment when I was announced as the winner, I

just sat there and the people next to me told me that I had won. “I was completely shell-shocked – it was very overwhelming,” she explained. Tamia was a prefect at Alexander Road this year and she also played for the school’s first hockey team, of which she was the captain. She was also the vice-captain of the Protea spirit house, she was part of the school band for five years and she was on the matric yearbook portfolio committee. Her favourite subject at school was history and she said this will help her when she starts studying for a law degree at NMU next year, where she has been provisionally accepted. In her free time, she enjoys watching television and going to the gym. “I like to gym because I am very sporty and active,” she said. Her advice for next year’s matriculants attending a matric dance? “When it comes to designing or choosing your own

dress, choose something that will make you feel special, not someone else. And don’t try to make everything perfect – something will go wrong somewhere, so just enjoy the day. “Go with someone who will make your night special, so that when you look back after 10 years, you don’t regret anything!”

Committee (MMC) for Infrastructure, Engineering, Electricity and Energy. “The ground in the catchment areas is simply so parched that rainfall is soaking in rather than running off to the rivers and dams.” Lovemore said the average dam levels only increased by approximately 1% from 28.6% on November 13 to 29.83% of capacity on December 1. The current levels are the lowest in almost 30 years, while the 1990 levels reached 15.5% of the available capacity. “We expect major rains in October 2018, according to the South African Weather Services (SAWS). At the current level of usage, our water supply will last until August 2018. That leaves us with a shortfall of two months during which time our only source of water will be the Nooitgedacht scheme,” Lovemore said. “This scheme provides about half of the water we currently use. Having only this source is not a feasible option. We are all obliged to do everything that we can to use less in order for the supply from our dams to last as long as we need it to.” She said it is, therefore, important that they remind the residents of the restriction measures currently in place. “We know that, at this time of the year, the general public prepares for the festive season and much cleaning and painting take place. “In addition, we are moving towards our warmest season. “The SAWS predicts hotter than average temperatures and it is natural then that water usage might increase. We can’t afford this,” Lovemore explained. Water restrictions The following restrictions are currently in place and are enforceable in

terms of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality: Water and Sanitation Services By-law (Provincial Gazette No. 2361, dated May 14, 2010): . No use of hosepipes is allowed (to water gardens, wash cars, hose down walls or paving, top up pools, fountains or ponds, etc.), unless: - The water is from a source other than municipal - The water is used for fire-fighting purposes. . No use of municipal water supply is allowed for watering plants, unless: - The water is carried in a handheld container - The water is from a source other than municipal - The water is used at a commercial or state nursery (where watering must take place using handheld containers if municipal water is used). . No use of sprinklers or irrigation systems allowed, unless the water is from a source other than municipal. . All building contractors must use treated effluent, collected from Fishwater Flats, or any other appropriate wastewater treatment works, other than for concrete work. . All borehole users must register with the municipality and abide by the legislative conditions applicable to the use of borehole water. . No use of automatic urinal flushing systems is allowed. . Residential and institutional users are subject to Part C of the Schedule of Tariffs, while commercial and industrial users are subject to Part B of the Schedule of Tariffs. “In addition to the legal requirements aimed at conserving our lim-

ited water resources, all the residents are encouraged to limit their water consumption to 60 litres per person per day and households to limit consumption to 400 litres per day and 12kl per month,” Lovemore added. The NMB Municipality is in the process of hiring additional plumbers as it fights the battle against water loss through leaks and bursts from old and ageing infrastructure. “We are aware that many people desperately want to maintain good gardens, that there are nurseries and pool companies struggling to make ends meet as a result of the drought, that building contractors need to use water, and are precluded from using potable water (other than for concrete work), and that car washes might face closure unless they recycle or find alternative water sources. “With these considerations in mind, the municipality will continue to make recycled effluent available to contractors and householders for non-drinking purposes during business hours from the Fishwater Flats and the Cape Recife Wastewater Treatment Works.” Untreated groundwater is available for non-drinking purposes at the Motherwell cemetery, between 8am and 4pm from Monday to Friday each week. “All of our municipal swimming pools that open for the season have been filled with groundwater. We are serious about the need to save water and stretch the little that we have for as long a time as possible. We know that the public are just as serious about protecting the scarcest of our resources,” Lovemore concluded. – REPORTER

New tank farm planned for Port of Ngqura REPORTER

PROGRESS has been made on the Port of Ngqura’s establishment as a new petroleum trading hub for Southern Africa, ahead of the planned decommissioning and rehabilitation of the existing liquid bulk facilities at the neighbouring Port of Elizabeth. According to a statement released, a sodturning ceremony is expected in January next year to mark the start of the construction of the new Oil Tanking Grindrod Calulo (OTGC) tank farm and new main access road. The fabrication of the tanks and optional LPG bullets is scheduled to start in April next year. “Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has completed the critical design work associated with the new tank farm infrastructure and constructed a new access road from the N2 highway to the 20ha site where OTGC will be constructing the new tank farm,” the statement read. The statement said a new port entrance plaza and pipeline servitude will be constructed that will form the link between the new tank farm and the Port of Ngqura, adding that tenders would be issued in January next year for the tank farm bulk earth works package and the main access road construction package to Berth B100. TNPA chief executive Shulami Qalinge

said these developments signal progress in TNPA’s plans to clean up terminal facilities and free up land in the port for future commercial and tourism development, while enabling Ngqura to play a vital role in securing South Africa’s future fuel supply. The new storage facilities and marine infrastructure at Ngqura will help support SA’s overall petroleum demand projections, which call for significant investments in tank storage infrastructure. “Phase one of the liquid bulk facility will provide approximately 155 000 cbm of storage capacity for refined petroleum products and a maximum of 718 600 cbm by the end of phase two, depending on customer commercial requirements,” the statement read. “The new liquid bulk terminal will also replace the tanks currently in use in the port, which will be decommissioned and the land redeveloped. The new, modern facility is expected to service the oil majors, new entrants into the South African oil industry, as well as international traders – all supporting the local shipping industry, while also creating socioeconomic benefits and will boost the Eastern Cape’s economy. “Besides generating local jobs during the construction phase of the project, the facility will provide permanent positions in the long term. It will promote skills development in the construction industry, empower local BBBEE businesses and stimulate additional tax income and increased revenues for local business,” the statement read.

The Segway, which is an electric, noisefree, eco-friendly, self-balancing scooter and incredibly fun and easy to ride, will offer visitors and locals a fun excursion along the beachfront promenade for all ages to enjoy. The guided Segway fun rides and tours have four routes along the beachfront between Kings Beach and Summerstrand on offer, as well as three exciting forest park routes in Happy Valley. Councillor Andrew Whitfield of Economic Development, Agriculture and Tourism said tourism is one of the industries with the greatest contribution to the GDP of the country and furthermore, stimulates and sustains the contribution to the local economy. “With each new attraction or activity comes employment opportunity. For each permanent job opportunity there are also indirect benefits which filter through to the transport, agriculture and other sectors,” Whitfield said. A modern and stylish tshisha nyama, Black Impala has also opened in Deal Party to boost the local cultural cuisine offerings. NMB Tourism will add this new establishment to the list of authentic and new experiences on offer in the Bay. Black Impala is a barbecue restro bar and venue focusing on Afro foods, braai meat, salads and stews with other menu items to make sure one is fully catered for at affordable prices.

NMB Tourism CEO Mandlakazi Skefile said the increase of tourism product offerings in Nelson Mandela Bay and the choice of experiences on offer will ensure to keep the family entertained this summer. “An entertaining and attractive destination will facilitate to increase the length of stay of visitors and economic contribution to the tourism sector,” Skefile said. Prices for the activities are from R300 per person and a special offer for children of R250 per person.

Timion a helping hand for Bay’s disabled kids THANDI SETOKOE WHAT started off as a small project in a couple’s backyard is now a well-established non-profit organisation, which has helped hundreds of disabled children in Nelson Mandela Bay and Uitenhage by manufacturing and distributing high-quality handmade wooden disability equipment free of charge to families from impoverished backgrounds. Timion was started in November 2006 by Swiss orthotist Daniel Meyer and his South African wife and physiotherapist Anika. They met while working with children with disabilities in Sierra Leone and Iraq. “Timion is a Greek word meaning ‘precious’ or ‘especially loved’. “It is a word that also represents the heart of the NPO and its team that specialises in the holistic support of caregivers with children that have cerebral palsy,” Meyer said. The organisation, which was started by the pair using their small bathroom as a workspace, now has a strong team of 11 members, which include professional therapists, counsellors and carpenters who work together, not only to handcraft the equipment, but also to visit the children at their homes to issue the equipment alongside supporting the families on how to help their child. “Initially we would visit the children only at the local hospitals and clinics, however, we de-

cided to change our approach as this kept us from knowing the real circumstances of the families.” Meyer explained that these families live with incredible challenges, of which transport and travelling are but some of the many difficulties they thave to deal with every day. “Taxis often charge them extra for their children or refuse to transport the much-needed wheelchair or seating device. “This leads to help and resources being inaccessible to the families and caregivers often have to deal with the emotional and physical weight of their child in unsupported isolation,” he said. Timion recently hosted a 10-year anniversary celebration at the Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton. “The event was in celebration of what God has done in and through this ministry and to give him the glory for all that has been achieved,” Meyer said. The anniversary also allowed a platform to look back at the last 10 years and see how Timion has grown, “from two people to a permanent staff of 11, from a bathroom as a work space to a workshop spanning seven garages and from seeing families weekly at clinics to roughly visiting six to eight homes daily.” He pointed out, however, that the focus of the event was not the practical growth of the organisation but rather gratefulness for the lives of the 1 000 plus children that the company has helped over the last 10 years.

< Daniel Meyer and his team of carpenters manufacture wooden standing frames and wheelchair inserts. The wheelchairs have cushioning which assists the child to lie in the correct position. PHOTOS: SUPPLIED

< The fun-filled 10th anniversary celebration held at the Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton allowed the team, families and children to sit, sing and eat together, commemorating children that have passed away and creating a space for the bigger Timion family to stop for a moment and be grateful together for the joining of lives and journeys.

Principal’s school dream comes true THANDI SETOKOE FOLLOWING a 20 year long dream, The Capstone School, a progressive Reggio-inspired independent primary school in Heatherbank Road in Charlo, has officially been registered. Situated on the Heatherbank farm in Port Elizabeth, the school’s campus is located on the original Lovemore homestead, surrounded by an abundance of trees, open spaces, natural birds and farm horses and cattle. Capstone’s official registration marks the realisation of a lifelong dream held by founder and principal, Jacqui Zeelie, a mother of four, who had run a pre-primary in Walmer for the past 20 years. “Education of young children in a loving environment, is a passion and for many years it has been my desire to open a primary school, where larger numbers of children could be nurtured and educated,’’ Zeelie said. She described that the sacrifice and effort that went into physically building the school and registering it is finally worth it. The school presently offers Grades 1 to 3 classes, as well as two classes in the pre-primary division. However, Zeelie, who has a vision for further growth, said an additional grade would be added each year until the school has classes from Grades 1 to 7. She further described that the school aims to create a home away from home where children are happy, loved and enjoy learning in an environment where pupils can fish, ex-

The school also follows an integrated curriculum where subjects are introduced through a series of stories that spark the child’s imagination. “This approach expands the child’s knowledge by providing a connected curriculum rather than a mix of unrelated bits of information.” In keeping with the Finland education model approach, the school has a no-homework policy, which allows children to play and be happy and families the freedom to spend their afternoons as they choose. “The class sizes are small and children progress at an individualised pace and are assessed on a continuous basis in a non-intrusive man-

ner,” Zeelie said, adding that this encourages the pupils to observe, to question and to think deeply. “They look, listen and touch. They ask, answer and discuss. They measure, move and create.” Zeelie said the teachers are the facilitators who create environments that stimulate extended exploration, problem-solving, cooperation and debate, which allow the children to discover creative and useful solutions to problems. “A strong emphasis and value is placed on hands-on learning in and through nature. “The school’s location in this beautiful part of the Bay is a key part of the dream,” Zeelie said.

Benefit concert held in Zoey’s honour ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL THE family is still reeling after the death of their little girl seven months ago but using her legacy to help others eases the pain – if only a little. Zoey Harris (12) passed away in April, and the Harris family has decided to host a benefit concert in her honour – while all the proceeds will go to the Provincial Hospital’s paediatric oncology unit, where Zoey spent her last moments. Young Zoey was born with biliary atresia, a condition in infants in which the bile ducts inside or outside the liver do not have normal openings, causing bile to be trapped in the liver. She was only a year old when she had a liver transplant and instantly became known as the

Bay’s “miracle baby”. After the transplant, doctors did not expect her to live as long as she did. Zoey also battled with cancer. “It is still very difficult not having Zoey around but talking about her helps a lot and we feel that having this concert keeps her legacy alive,” said Hubrey Harris, Zoey’s father. “We would also like to make this an annual event.” He and wife, Vergie, are very grateful for the Provincial Hospital’s paediatric oncology unit for the love and care Zoey received and would like to show their appreciation by donating the proceeds of the concert to them. “We’ve spent a lot of time in hospital with Zoey and when you are sitting there you observe many things. One of the things we noticed is parents who travel from far, sometimes rural areas, to have their children receive treatment

TAKE 2

– sometimes for the very first time which can be very daunting. You see the needs they have and the support they require. “We may not be able to give a lot, but every little drop counts, and in this way we are making sure that Zoey’s legacy lives on. I believe that she would be proud of us for doing this in her name.” Zoey’s older sister, Caitlin (15), who sang a moving tribute at her funeral, will also be performing at the show, which will feature Bevin Samuels, Loyiso Gijana, Three/Six, Boeta B and Alton Zakay. The concert will start at 3pm at the Bethesda Congregational Church Arcadia on Sunday. Admission is R50 and the dress code is pink. For tickets contact Hubrey on 082 334 3951, Vergie on 084 840 3817 or Nicky on 076 660 7951.

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 6 DECEMBER 2017

St Francis Hospice gets into the Christmas spirit ST Francis Hospice will be celebrating the Christmas festive season in style this month with a Hospice Hero lucky draw and a Christmas Carols evening. St Francis Hospice has been providing home-

based care to more than 200 patients suffering from life-limiting illnesses such as cancer, HIV/ Aids and motor neurone disease, at no cost to the patients since the mid-1980s. As part of their Hospice Hero Drive, they of-

fered community members the chance to win R10 000. All they had to do to enter the draw is become a Hospice Hero by donating as little as R50 a month. The draw is taking place tonight at their Hospice Hero cocktail evening.

St Francis Hospice will also be hosting a Christmas Carols evening on December 14 at their grounds in Hospice Lane, Taybank, at 5pm. Those who wish to attend can bring along a blanket and picnic basket. There is no entry fee, but attendees are encouraged to bring an item of dry or canned goods to add to the patients’ Christmas hampers. For info contact Lynn van Vuuren on 041 360 7070. – REPORTER

ADVERTORIAL: THE CO-OP MICA

The ideal starting point to kick off your Christmas holiday adventure WITH the Christmas festive season now officially in full swing, folks are busy finalising their holiday plans, doing their Christmas shopping and adding a few more items to their to-do lists to make the most of the summer break just around the corner. It is also the perfect time to hit the Co-op Mica to get a Christmas gift for Dad, pick up the necessary gear for the annual family camping trip and stock up on items to redecorate or repair a few things around the house. It has become somewhat of a tradition in many households to spruce up their homes and repair broken items during the

December holidays and this year should be no exception. Sometimes, all it takes is a new coat of paint to give a room or home that new and improved look. This is where the Co-op’s range of interior and exterior Duram paints and other necessary items come in. They also stock a wide range of power tools that will make the perfect gift for Dad and also smooth the way forward while working through the dreaded end-of-year to-do list. However, if the idea is to avoid that list at all costs this year and just spend time relaxing with the family, the Co-op also boasts a range of products that are ideal

for a short and simple getaway. One such item is the BaseCamp Camping Chair and Fisherman Cooler, a comfortable fishing chair that also doubles as a cooler bag. Combine it with a tent, sleeping bag and the great outdoors and you have got yourself the relaxing and inexpensive bonding trip that you have been looking forward to all year. If you are not exactly the type who looks forward to pitching a tent out in the wilderness, but you enjoy spending a couple of hours in it from time to time, then a fishing expedition is just the way to go. December is, after all, the time of year that is meant to bring families closer to-

gether and what better way to do that than to bond over a relaxing camp fire or teach the children a thing or two about the art of fishing? Even the items on the to-do list that usually feel like nothing more than a chore can be turned into an adventure when the whole family gets involved. So, head on down to the Co-op and get what you need to get started on those holiday plans. ADVERTORIAL: ‘WONDER’

Matric dance finalists treated to movie at NuMetro REPORTER THE Port Elizabeth Express Miss Matric Dance finalists and guests had the privilege to watch the Wonder movie last Wednesday at NuMetro in Walmer Park Shopping Centre. Based on the New York Times bestseller, Wonder tells the inspiring and heartwarming story of August Pullman. Born with facial differences that, up until now, have prevented him from going to a mainstream school, Auggie becomes the most unlikely of heroes when he enters the local fifth grade. As his family, his new classmates, and the larger community all struggle to find their compassion and acceptance, Auggie’s extraordinary journey will unite them all and prove you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out. The story of a 10-year-old boy with facial differences becomes a multifaceted look at what it means to be human in the film adaptation of R.J. Palacio’s bestseller Wonder. Golden Globe nominee Jacob Tremblay (Room) tackles the one-of-a-kind role of Auggie Pullman, whose birth defects and multiple surgeries have kept him out of school – until now. Jettisoned into what is for him the brave new world of the fifth grade, Auggie steps into an unexpected journey. All Auggie ever wanted was to be an ordinary kid but, as his sister keeps telling him, you can’t be ordinary when you were born to stand out. Though he once found solace inside a space helmet, suddenly he must face a whole universe of gawking kids who don’t yet know how to face him back. In a year, Auggie and all around him are transformed by the things that count most:

friendship, courage and the everyday choice to be kind to everyone on your path. Wonder stars Academy Award winner Julia Roberts, Academy Award nominee Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay. Standing up to bullying Part of the Wonder phenomenon has been empowering young people to more confidently confront the poison of bullying, bigotry and ostracism. “The book has sparked international anti-bullying campaigns,” noted producer Todd Lieberman. “One of the most important things is that the story explores the many different ways people get bullied. Emotional bullying is a big deal to me, and it’s one of the reasons I really responded to the book.

“Bad behaviour has been going on forever, but with social media you now have people treating others unfairly on an even wider spectrum, so the need for these kinds of stories is more timely than ever.”

Jacob Tremblay is August Pullman in ‘Wonder’.

Miss Matric Dance finalists The 10 PE Express Miss Matric Dance finalists and their family and friends, as well as some of our readers had the privilege to watch the Wonder movie last Wednesday at NuMetro in Walmer Park Shopping Centre. Before the movie started, the top three in the Miss Matric Dance competition were announced. In third place was Anje Barkhuizen from DF Malherbe High School and in second place

was the wild card winner, Caelyn Septoo from Chapman High School. Tamia Sauls from Alexander Road High School was the winner of this year’s competition. #ChooseKind campaign #ChooseKind is the movement inspired by the story Wonder, written by R.J. Palacio. The movement encourages people to create and spread more kindness in the world. The movement hopes to build a positive and inspirational social change across the world, inspiring people to practice random acts of kindness every day. ) Wonder releases in cinemas nationwide on Friday. It has a running time of 113 minutes.

SA’s best comedy talent set to take Bay by storm REPORTER CELEBRATING five years of bringing laughter to South Africans, the latest version of Kings & Queens of Comedy will be continuing the trend when it returns to the Boardwalk Convention Centre on Saturday. In medieval times, a jester was employed by a nobleman or monarch to entertain him and his guests. The heavyweights of South African comedy are by no means jesters, but they certainly do entertain. Shining their comical armour and sharpening their witty swords for the night, the

stellar line-up of comedy giants includes Riaad Moosa (MC), Joey Rasdien, Khanyisa Bunu, Leeanda Reddy, Loyiso Gola, Ntosh Madlingozi, Sifiso Nene and Tumi Morake. Leading the pack, Moosa and his cohorts for the evening promise to bring a healthy dose of laughter, straight up, to Port Elizabethans. Each of the successful comedians will be bringing their own unique talent to the table to make for an unforgettable evening. Don’t miss the Kings & Queens of Comedy at the Boardwalk Convention Centre on December 9 at 8pm. Tickets from R180 are available at Computicket. The show is rated PG16.

My number is 0835265579 for over 7 years I have been reading different testimonies from different people of all races thanking Asembe for changing their miserable lives. He made them rich mainly with SUPER MAGIC WALLET that lots of people are using to get money everyday and weekly and they then pay back a weekly amount to Asembe. There is a lot of people with testimonies about Super Magic Wallet. I was on the verge of a financial breakdown because of fake prophets, doctors, herbalists and sangomsa that I have consulted before but they kept on asking more money without any results. I chose the short boys from Asembe to put money in my account, I was also 100% ssure that he was going to help me just like the way he has helped a lot of other people. He promised me that the money will be in my account the next day. I was so suprised in the morning when I received a bank sms that a lot of money was deposited in my account. I went to withdraw the money and I paid him 40% from that money. I am now an independent woman, I started my transport business using the money form Asembe. My husband is also planning to start his own business after getting SUPER RATS from Asembe to put money in the house. Dont lose hope, I promise and guarantee you that no matter how deep your financial problems are take a chance and call Asembe and he will help you with the best results. he also specialises with Power ball & LOTTO, my friend won the lotto through lucky numbers given by Asembe and he paid 30% to him. Dont waste your time, remember to be born poor is not your fault but if you die poor that is your biggest mistake. Just Call Asembe to make you rich and successful CALL 083 526 5579

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

The case for and against Robert Kubica IT’S been no secret that the Williams F1 team has been evaluating Robert Kubica over the last several months. Still, there is no announcement from the team on who will fill the second seat alongside Canadian teenager Lance Stroll. Kubica is no stranger to Formula 1 as his previous stints at Renault and BMW Saub-

er can attest. The Polish driver burst onto the F1 scene in 2006 with a pedigree and level of talent most drivers could only dream of. Both his spells with Sauber and Renault were underscored with tremendous speed and an easy prediction that he could one day become world champion. In 2011, a horrific crash at the Ronde di

Andora rally partially severed his right forearm and devastated his Formula 1 career. While he labeled a return to F1 as “nearly impossible”, he reverted to competitive rally racing. The dream of F1 was never far away from his thoughts and the rumours of a possible

return began to spread through the F1 paddock. Subsequently, Renault drafted him into the car for a day of testing following the 2017 Hungarian Grand Prix. The test, according to the Renault who’d named Kubica as a possibility for 2018, was used to assess his capabilities. While no definitive data was shared from the test, Renault would cease any interest shortly thereafter. Since then he’s completed three days of testing for Williams, who are also considering Russian driver Sergey Sirotkin. The case is easily made for Robert Kubica. He was blindingly quick in F1 and had all the makings of champion. His story is a goosebump-inducing achievement of the human spirit and there’s little doubt that if Kubica were to make an F1 return, it would be one of the greatest comeback stories in all of sports. And to sweeten the pot even further he also comes with a nice chunk of change from Polish oil company Lotos. But the question about his competency continues to linger. It’s clear at this stage that if Williams were fully confident in Kubica’s capabilities, they’d have already signed him up. It’d certainly be one heck of a PR win. Nonetheless, PR isn’t at the forefront of Williams’ decision. Instead, it’s having two drivers with the ability to score vital points that ensures that Williams continues to earn vital prize money as they aim to return to the forefront of F1. The other driver in the running is 22year-old Sergey Sirotkin, who also comes with a lucrative incentive from Russian backers. Rest assured that the fact that any sort of financial aspect must factor into the selection a driver doesn’t sit well with Frank or Claire Williams. Racing and Formula 1 is in their DNA, but the nagging reality of the financial burden of F1, as an independent team, is a chronic symptom of a far too expensive sport. And it forces a team like Williams into considering a sponsor-backed driver like Sirotkin who likely wouldn’t have registered on the Williams’ radar without it. The expectation is that Kubica will be announced as a Williams driver for the 2018 season and if it eventuates, the team would’ve have made the call based on the belief that is capable enough. Devoid of pressure, the opinion from outside the Williams team has a distinctly romantic note. After all, one of the biggest reasons we love sport is for the romance of it all, for human stories and achievements.

PE Comets honour outstanding players SELBY MADIKANE PE Comets Basketball Club held their first annual awards function at the Raymond Mhlaba Indoor Sports Complex Conference Hall on Sunday to honour the players for their excellent performances during the 2017 Nelson Mandela Bay Basketball Association League Season. PE Comets president Sibongile Fondini stated that the primary objective of hosting the function was to motivate the players for their outstanding performances during the past season. Fondini said, “I must say, the club executive committee decided to hold this function because it felt that outstanding players should be motivated and encouraged. “Yes, all the players showed that they were good athletes, but there are most outstanding players. It was not easy to make the final selection, but in the end we came up with those players that showed consistency and character throughout the season. “Next year we plan to make

this function an event of big magnitude. I want to thank all the players for dedicating their time to the club.” Fondini revealed that the PE Comets ladies’ team won the Nelson Mandela Bay Basketball Association League’s most prestigious trophy, as well as the Mayoral Cup. Furthermore, Fondini said the PE Comets men’s team worked their socks off during this year’s season, though they did not collect any silverware. Fondini said, “I want to take pride in our men’s team and our veterans’ team for their hard work.” The players who received tro phies are: Most disciplined players: Wendy Mdalana, Siya Mdutyulwa and Asemahle Klaas. Most improved players: Anathi Gxutyayo and Phethuxolo Tshanga

Best performance in a game:

Luvuko Manana, Zanele Peter, and Zintle Matika Captain of the year: Zanele Ncipa Players of the Year: Nobubele Phuza (women) and Phumzile Panda (men).

SELBY MADIKANE AFTER their recent losses, Lion City, Highbury and PE Stars restored their dignity when they won their ABC Motsepe League games on Saturday. Following their 2-0 away loss to Bizana Pondo Chiefs in Mbizana last Saturday, Lion City secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over the highriding Future Tigers at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Saturday. Highbury managed to collect

the three maximum points from Bizana Pondo Chiefs in their 2-1 hard-fought victory during their home game at Gelvandale Stadium, bringing them back from their 4-0 away defeat against Spears of the Nation last week. After they had suffered a 3-0 loss to Tornado FC, PE Stars put a brave effort in their 1-0 win that they registered against the gutsy Mthatha City at the Gelvandale Stadium. SUBS maintained their winning momentum as they earned a nar-

row 4-3 triumph when they took on Butterworth FC at WSU Sports Field in Butterworth. Sibanye FC suffered a huge setback when they went down 4-1 to City Lads FC in their contest that was played in Mount Ayliff, but redeemed themselves when they defeated FC Buffalo 1-0 at the Gelvandale Stadium last Saturday. Major Chiefs win ZWIFA Mayoral Cup title MAJOR Chiefs proved beyond a doubt that they are the most formidable side when they won the Zwide Football Association (ZWIFA) Mayoral Cup title at Zwide Stadium on Sunday. Chiefs, who are affectionately called Amakhosi by their loyal supporters, gave Golden Aces a well-deserved 4-2 hiding during their quarter-final match. In another quarter-final match, Kuyasa United Brothers went down 2-0 to

Zwide Pirates. Bay Tigers FC took the soccer fraternity by storm after they humiliated the tough Sophakama FC 5-2. Morning Stars also hammered Real Crusaders 3-0 in the last quarter-final match. Amakhosi showed that they were a major force to be reckoned with after they thrashed Zwide Pirates 5-2 in the first of the semi-finals. Bay Tigers also gave Morning Stars a

run for their money but ended up losing 1-0. In the finals, Amakhosi took the honours after they beat the ABC Motsepe League erstwhile campaigners Morning Stars 2-0. Chiefs are thus the 2017 Ntando Tours and Transport Premier League reigning champions. They have also been promoted to the SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League.– SELBY MADIKANE
