Mmusi holds People’s Forum THANDI SETOKOE

EMOCRATIC Alliance (DA) leader, Mmusi Maimane has committed to making the empowerment of young people his main priority. Maimane was speaking in Motherwell last Friday, where he visited residents as part of his Peo-
ple’s Forum Tour. Maimane said the party had launched a one-year internship programme, called Vukuzakhe, a single portal where unemployed youth could access all the internships on offer. “This youth internship initiative looks at how we can
employ and avail job opportunities for young people. This programme is aimed at equipping the youth with skills training coupled with on-the-job training,” Maimane said. He said the party had
written to the business communities and have commitments from both the private and public sector to rapidly roll out this programme. “I have also commissioned our government to ensure that they open up more opportunities for the youth,” Maimane said. Speaking at the forum, Anelisa Mabece, currently an intern in the Nelson Mandela Bay Munic-
ipality Mayor’s Office, commended the launch of Vukuzakhe. “I will forever be grateful for this opportunity that the municipality has granted me. “And I believe that Vukuzakhe will also open doors for others,” Mabece said. Continued on page 3

The safety and security for the Standard Bank Ironman African Championships in April and the crown jewel on September 1 and 2 include the following: . High visibility of officers at tourist attractions . Continuous daily law enforcement . Foot patrols . Bicycle patrols . Continuous closed-circuit television (CCTV) monitoring and fast and appropriate response to
deal with potential threats . Enforcement of municipal by-laws . Traffic law enforcement . Crime prevention . Strict enforcement of alcohol-free zones as part of NMB’s zero tolerance of alcohol abuse at public amenities . Tourist ambassadors to assist members of the public with tourism and race information, as well as being the eyes and ears of law enforcement agencies.
“Athletes and visitors alike are welcome to come and enjoy our excellent facilities as we put our reputations on the line to work towards two world-class events. Come and enjoy our rich wildlife and cultural tapestry,” MMC Best concluded.
Work to recommence at Nooitgedacht REPORTER NELSON Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor Athol Trollip has confirmed that the Nooitgedacht phase three budget has been restored to R93 million, effectively bringing the project back to life. He said the contractors walked off site last week when it was announced that the National Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) was slashing the budget by R34 million. “The drought-stricken Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality had appealed to the DWS to reconsider this decision. Thus, we welcome the commitment to recommence work from Monday,” Executive Mayor Trollip said.
He said that this was an important development that was confirmed verbally by senior national water officials. Trollip added that once phase three comes online, the low-level scheme will provide approximately 210 million litres of water to the metro. “We still face a critical water crisis while our western supply dams are now at 25.67% capacity. “We all need to continue saving water in whatever way we can. “The metro’s multipronged water turnaround strategy continues without hesitation, requiring each of us to use no more than 60 litres of water each day,” the mayor said. Residents are urged to report any and all water leaks to 0800 205 050.

Popular business precinct set for major upgrade REPORTER A GROUNDBREAKING plan to uplift the aesthetic value of the popular Embizweni Square in New Brighton has been mooted by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality during a meeting with local businesses as part of unlocking economic opportunities in the area. NMBM Executive Mayor Athol Trollip said the area was a popular business and entertainment hub which offered an array of businesses which play a major role in the growth of the local economy. “Its popularity has seen green shoots emerging as new and trendy businesses are mushrooming in the area, a sign of investor confidence in the township economy,” Trollip said. The meeting is one of many engagements the municipality will have with the affected businesses to strategise around how best the area can be improved through the value add in terms of infrastructure development and diverse service offering. “One of the challenges that have been noted is the need for immediate intervention in
monitoring alcohol abuse by minors and rampant crime, both of which will be addressed through the deployment of law enforcement teams,” Trollip said. “This will form part of ridding the area of bad elements and rebranding it as a tourist hub for both local and international visitors. Last week the safety and security directorate visited the area to establish what security challenges are plaguing the area and how those can best be addressed.” The mayor said a meeting with the Liquor Board was initiated to bring them on board and to understand what role they can play. “As a start, the municipality will start fixing street lights in the area, including iconic areas, like the Red Location Museum, the Mendi Arts Centre, which has gone through a multimillion rand revamp, and many others as they are closely linked to Embizweni Square. “Next will be the installation of security cameras in the square as a crime deterrent and this will be complemented with random patrols by law enforcement teams to ensure the safety of the area. This will ensure that businesses operate optimally without having

to deal with criminal elements,” the mayor added. He said another area needing urgent attention was the painting of parking lines to control the traffic as part of formalising the pre-
cinct as a recognised business hub. “Our intention is to work in partnership with the local businesses to ensure that the value add to the area is safeguarded and showcase it as a catalytic project.”
Maimane empowers local youth Continued from page 1 Raised by a single parent, Mabece said she always wanted to make her mother proud because she knew that her mom had not sent her to school to end up being unemployed and falling prey to social ills in the township. “I graduated in 2014 and have been unemployed since. When I came across the municipal internship programme advert, I jumped at the opportunity,” Mabece said. She said it was a gruelling process and she was ecstatic to have been chosen as one of the four interns. “One thing my mom has taught me is that education is the one thing that no one can ever take away from you,” Mabece added. Another municipal intern, Bajabulile Makhaye, said in as much as education is the key to success, it is not enough. “As the youth we need to go an extra mile – voluntary work can do wonders.” Makhaye started working at the age of 15 by helping her neighbour with carrying vegetables to her stall. “All this I did because I wanted a reference for my CV that I would use when I applied for a waitressing job,” Makhaye said. Maimane said that the DA had recognised
that internships were not the only solution on the table to tackle unemployment, stating that mass employment can only be created by the construction of more factories. “The factories will then be used for manufacturing. We also need to enhance tourism and stimulate agriculture, and in key big sectors we have to have economic growth so that more people can find work.” He said the struggle in South Africa is the struggle for jobs. “It’s not against an individual, it’s about a job. Therefore, we must deal with economic growth.” ; Mmusi Maimane’s addressed the residents’ needs and concerns during his People’s Forum Tour in Motherwell last week.

In a statement release, the department said the cut-off date was initially November 30, last year and was extended to January 31, this year in the hope that all those who had applied online would have made the necessary payment and provide the required supporting documents and biometrics. “By January 29, a total of 176 605 applicants completed the entire process,
which includes honouring their appointments with VFS and submitting supporting documents and biometrics. “The extension is only for submitting biometrics and supporting documents at 10 VFS offices, as well as for those who had submitted online applications by November 30 but did not pay the prescribed fee. New applications will not be accepted,” the statement read. The department plans to have completed the whole project, including finalising adjudications and issuing all new permits, by the end of September this year. “ZEP permit holders will be allowed to work, study or conduct business in
South Africa. The ZEP permits are valid for a maximum period of four years, effective from January 1, this year and expiring on December 31, 2021, notwithstanding the date of issue. “Exemption permits, like the ZEP permits, are not permanent or longterm. They only serve a specific purpose with a view ultimately to have people returning to their countries of origin, to build their lives anew,” the department said. ) Location/offices for payment and submission of ZEP supporting documents and biometrics in Port Elizabeth: Office 7C, 1st floor Moffet on Main, corner of 17th Avenue and Main Road, Walmer.

Kragga Kamma Golf Course is not closing down ANIKA DE BEER THE rumours that surfaced towards the end of last year that Kragga Kamma Golf Course is shutting down are not true, said Frans Schellingerhout, president of the Kragga Kamma Golf Club. According to him, the rumours really started gaining momentum in the last quarter of last year. “Personally, I believe that this could have been malicious in order to lure players away from our course. I do not know exactly who started it, but when the ‘For Sale’ board was put at the entrance, I really got word of the rumours,” he continued. “Perhaps the originator(s) did not know that the club committee was already hard at work to come to an agreement with the land owners.” Schellingerhout said that instead of the golf course closing down, quite the opposite was happening. “The golf course is under new management (a member group has taken it over) and with a full-time greenkeeper things are already showing a major improvement.” He added that one of the partners in the landowner group had always been in control of the
privately owned golf course but decided to scale back on his involvement in the club due to health reasons. “This prompted the club committee to look at a plan which would ensure the continuation of the golf course. “As things progressed towards the end of 2017, the committee involved some club members with extended expertise and was expanded. “The members are Henry Huygen, Braam Kruger, Mike Krug, Ralton Potgieter and myself. We also still have Louis Hay as part of the owners’ group sitting in on our committee meetings and giving guidance,” Schellingerhout said. The new club committee has officially been in effect since January 1. The Kragga Kamma Golf Club is also hosting a club competition every Saturday, which will be expanded to a major competition every first Saturday of the month. Non-SAGA affiliated players were also given an opportunity to compete, something that, according Schellingerhout, was not usually done at golf courses. The club was not only open to golfers, though, as it boasts facilities for a number of others sports, such as squash, table tennis
Joe Slovo learners boosted with donation of tablet trolley REPORTER JOE Slovo Primary School, a historically disadvantaged school in Nelson Mandela Bay, is now the proud owner of a mobile tablet trolley, which was sponsored by Alwin Lehner Plastics South Africa (ALPLA) in collaboration with giveITback. The handover took place at the school on January 25. This is the second donation of its kind that ALPLA has made since 2016, where Nsimbini Full Service School
in KwaZulu-Natal was the first beneficiary. The donation is in excess of R260 000 and consists of 40 tablet PCs, a teacher’s laptop and an offline content server with full educational suite, subjects, books, apps and more. Bay learners benefit from German ambassador’s tour REPORTER
said, “I was a barefoot township urchin. I went to school where there were no desks. “We sat on benches and when the teacher asked us to write, we knelt down on the floor and used the benches we had been sitting on as desks. I wish Tutudesks had been available in my day!” During his tour of the Port Elizabeth region, Schaefer also paid a visit to the Masifunde NGO, which provides educational and life skills support to learners from impoverished communities. Germany’s Development Cooperation has been in partnership with Masifunde since 2012 through the Youth for Safer Communities Project (YSC). Through peer-to-peer workshops in the classroom, the project inspires high school learners to recognise the personal role they can play in making their schools and communities safer. During the workshops, learners nominate “Local Heroes of Safety” from among their peers, who then receive support to start school safety projects, such as debate clubs, drama groups and awareness campaigns. The project started in Walmer Township and has since expanded to more than 35 schools and reached 8 000 learners. Schaefer engaged with volunteers at Masifunde and handed over a donation of books to Masifunde’s library to allow learners to advance their skills.
GERMAN Ambassador to South Afric, Martin Schaefer recently embarked on a tour of the Eastern Cape, from January 30 to February 2, to visit education initiatives, engage with German and South African partners and make stops at academic institutions. One such visit was made to Emfundweni Primary School in Zwide, where he delivered several hundred portable school desks, known as Tutudesks, in support of the Desmond Tutu Tutudesk Campaign. The campaign estimated that three million children in South Africa attend school without the benefit of a desk to work at, which prompted the German Embassy to sponsor 1 000 Tutudesks that learners could place on their laps to provide them with a stable surface to write on and use during their lessons and at home when doing their homework. The campaign has been providing portable school desks since 2012. “We are delighted to support this important initiative, which has already assisted more than 1.5 million learners at schools in 24 African countries. “Tutu’s work and commitment to building a better future for all South Africans is an inspiration to us,” Schaefer said. The Tutudesk Campaign is personally led by Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who

Treatments offered include Thalgo iBeauty, a revolutionary treatment device that utilises sound waves, sequential ultrasound and radio frequency to gently exfoliate, hydrate and firm the skin, massage therapy, body treatments, specialised skin treatments, hydrotherapy and beauty treatments of impeccable quality at an international standard. Along with six treatment rooms, nail bar and pedicure lounge, facilities will be launched end-December which include a Rasul, floatation pool and Himalayan salt sauna. ADVERTORIAL: WIN TICKETS TO CARNIVAL AND SUPERHERO FUN RUN
Bay to host largest superhero fun run in Happy Valley IT’S time to dust off the old cape and boots. St Francis Hospice is gearing up to host its inaugural Superhero Fun Run/Walk and Carnival on March 3 in Happy Valley. St Francis Hospice provides home-based palliative care monthly to some 200 terminally ill cancer, HIV/Aids and motor neurone disease patients in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro and Kouga region at no cost to the patient. They believe that no-one should be in pain or alone during their last days. Social workers on the hospice team not only provide comfort, but play a significant role in facilitating guardianship, fostering, grants and schooling for affected vulnerable children. Hospice staff members also visit the families for a time after the patient has passed on to make sure they are coping and healing. St Francis Hospice is a registered NPO, PBO and an exempt microenterprise that lends 135% to the BBBEE scorecard for procurement recognition and provides Section 18A receipts which enable tax rebates. Many have been touched by St Francis Hospice, which has built a credible record of quality care since 1986. To continue their outstanding work, the Superhero Fun Run/Walk and Carnival is
aimed at raising significant funding on the day via entrance fees, sponsorship and general donations. It will also be entered on Recordsetter.com to officially claim the record for the Largest Superhero Fun Run. All participants of the
fun run will need to wear a superhero outfit or item. The run or walk of about 3km will start at Happy Valley at 7am, proceed down Marine Drive and end off at Happy Valley again. In secure surroundings, there will be fun activities for the entire family, such as performing artists, food stalls, a jumping castle, face painting and various lawn games.
For the more competitive folks there will be prizes up for grabs for the best-dressed superheroes announced on the day. Entry to the fun run, which includes access to the carnival, is R60 per adult and R30 per child or R150 per family of four.
Corporate packages from R900 allow branding on the roadside and entry for five staff members, who each receive branded capes and masks. Entry to the carnival is R20 per adult and R10 per child. So, get your superhero game on, enter the fun run online at Ticketpro or at Jet, Edgars or Postnet and see the magic come to life

Lion City back on track after weekend victory ALGOA STEEL
SELBY MADIKANE
FOLLOWING a number of consecutive losses, Lion City proved critics wrong about not being resilient following their 7-2 outright victory over Highbury FC during their ABC Motsepe League away clash at the South Campus Grounds on Friday evening. City have recently lost a number of games that they should have won. They failed to honour their game against Spears last week which astounded many of their supporters. Apparently, before that incident, City had never lost a game by means of a walkover during their three season campaigns in the ABC Motsepe League. In their first round encounter, City went down 1-0 to Highbury at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium. This time around, however, it was clear that City did their homework before their showdown against Highbury. Lion City’s diehard supporters view their side’s recent win as a major confidence booster. In another Nelson Mandela Bay derby, PE Stars collected the three maximum points after they overcame Swartkops Valley United Brothers at Gelvandale Stadium on Friday evening. Despite their 2-1 away defeat in Bhisho to EC Bees, another metro side, Sibanye FC, put up a good fight.
Tornado cemented their position at the top of the league log table following their 3-1 win over Butterworth FC at Ibika WSU Campus Grounds in Butterworth. The home supporters of City Lads saw their side succumb 3-2 to Mthatha City, while Future Tigers registered a hardfought 1-0 triumph over Spears in Ginsberg. In the battle of the struggling sides, FC Buffalo drew 4-4 with Matta Milan in East London during their match. Bizana Pondo Chiefs earned a narrow 4-3 win from a ICQC 2018-20 struggling Try Again FC in Mbhizana.

Zwifa teams rewarded for last season’s performances SELBY MADIKANE
Mixed weekend for SAB league sides SELBY MADIKANE A NUMBER of teams lost valuable points during the Safa Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League games that took place on Friday and Saturday, while other teams managed to collect the three maximum league points.
THE Zwide Football Association (Zwifa) held its annual awards presentation function at Tubali Street Community Hall in KwaZakhele on Saturday to honour its outstanding teams for their excellent performance during the 2017 season.
Following a good start to the league season, Hearts supporters were taken aback when their side lost 2-0 to the high-riding PE Sundowns on Friday evening. Disappointed loyal home supporters also saw their side, Young Killers, succumb 3-1 to Major Chiefs at Jabavu Rugby Stadium.
Guest speaker Safa Nelson Mandela Bay president Simphiwe Mkangelwa said that Zwifa clubs should support their local football association (LFA) executive committee members through thick and thin. Mkangelwa said, “Zwifa clubs should cooperate with their LFA executive committee members at all times so that the game of football becomes a winner. “Junior’s and women’s football must be taken seriously by Zwifa clubs. “I want to encourage those teams that did not collect silverware that they should not give up. They had contributed a lot by bringing spectators to the fields during the past season. “Then I would like to congratulate the teams that have taken honours. “Furthermore, Zwifa executive committee members deserve an accolade as they hosted this event to motivate the clubs.” Zwifa president Mzikayise Chippa Quntu said that in 2017, Zwifa had no sponsorship at all. Quntu highlighted that Safa Nelson Mandela Bay bailed out Zwifa through grant-inaid because his LFA did not have financial resources. “I want to thank our regional office for coming to our rescue by providing financial assistance to us. We did not know how we were going to hold this function. “Ntando Transport and Tours could not provide financial assistance to us last season due to their own challenges,” he added. “I would like to thank PE Express for covering our stories. “Furthermore, I would like to extend my special thanks to the clubs, supporters and match officials for their unwavering support. “I would also like to congratulate Major Chiefs for winning the Zwifa Premier League, Mayoral Cup and SAB Regional League promotional play-offs.” ANC Ward 25 Councillor Mabaso Jacobs said his office is open at all times to the Zwifa teams.

On Saturday, Roaring Tigers continued where they left off last week when they defeated Amarhamba United 2-0 at Chevrolet Stadium in New Brighton, while FC Winners played to a 1-1 draw against Motherwell Academy at Mawabo Dyubhele Community Fields in KwaDwesi. Following their 2-0 defeat to Highland Spurs, Despatch Pioneers at least did not go home empty-handed. They shared a 2-2 draw with the gutsy Fairview Rovers at Khayamnandi Stadium in Despatch. Mabayibone Strikers drew 0-0 with Camper United at Walmer Community Grounds, while Ikamva Movers played to a 1-1 draw against Golden Aces at Chevrolet Stadium.
