Plans afoot for waste backlog ROSLYN BAATJIES

M

ORE than 50 vehicles, 120 part-time workers, 50 metro police members and 50 security personnel are part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro’s contingency plan to eradicate the backlog in waste disposal by this Friday, June 9. Waste management staff has been on a goslow since May 22. According to mayoral spokesperson Sibongile Dimbaza, this only applies to those areas served with black garbage bags. “Residents, who themselves can remove their house and garden refuse (no building

rubble), are encouraged to use the delivery centres in the meanwhile. If this is not possible, garbage bags must be bound and left on sidewalks for disposal. The times for this are not known at this stage.” A hotline for residents’ queries is currently available during office hours. “It is regrettable that the municipality should allocate money to the above-mentioned contingency plan, as our own waste management staff have the ability to remove garbage but are on a go-slow,” says Dimbaza. The municipal waste management staff, represented by the South African Municipal Workers Union, has received the municipality’s final decision on all matters.

The municipality grants an hourly unpaid lunch and eight paid working hours to each garbage collector. Any overtime worked more than nine hours must be recorded by the appropriate official. “While the average shift is about six hours, the municipality understands that long distances are travelled and that equipment breaks. Therefore, payment for a day of eight hours will be reimbursed,” said Dimbaza. In addition, the irregular payment of overtime from October 2016 to 31 January 2017 is being investigated. Ablution facilities will be installed at landfills and depots. “At a benchmarking assignment conducted

by Waste Management last year, it was determined that the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has some of the largest teams per waste truck, with the lowest tonnage disposal per hour. Under the leadership of the mayor, waste management is now fully reviewed and evaluated for efficiency,” said Dimbaza.
