Plans afoot for waste backlog ROSLYN BAATJIES

M

ORE than 50 vehicles, 120 part-time workers, 50 metro police members and 50 security personnel are part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro’s contingency plan to eradicate the backlog in waste disposal by this Friday, June 9. Waste management staff has been on a goslow since May 22. According to mayoral spokesperson Sibongile Dimbaza, this only applies to those areas served with black garbage bags. “Residents, who themselves can remove their house and garden refuse (no building

rubble), are encouraged to use the delivery centres in the meanwhile. If this is not possible, garbage bags must be bound and left on sidewalks for disposal. The times for this are not known at this stage.” A hotline for residents’ queries is currently available during office hours. “It is regrettable that the municipality should allocate money to the above-mentioned contingency plan, as our own waste management staff have the ability to remove garbage but are on a go-slow,” says Dimbaza. The municipal waste management staff, represented by the South African Municipal Workers Union, has received the municipality’s final decision on all matters.

The municipality grants an hourly unpaid lunch and eight paid working hours to each garbage collector. Any overtime worked more than nine hours must be recorded by the appropriate official. “While the average shift is about six hours, the municipality understands that long distances are travelled and that equipment breaks. Therefore, payment for a day of eight hours will be reimbursed,” said Dimbaza. In addition, the irregular payment of overtime from October 2016 to 31 January 2017 is being investigated. Ablution facilities will be installed at landfills and depots. “At a benchmarking assignment conducted

by Waste Management last year, it was determined that the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has some of the largest teams per waste truck, with the lowest tonnage disposal per hour. Under the leadership of the mayor, waste management is now fully reviewed and evaluated for efficiency,” said Dimbaza. False posts spread panic, waste SAPS resources REPORTER THE South African Police Service (SAPS) said they have noted with concern the increasing number of false posts on social media about missing, kidnapped and abducted girls and women. In a media statement by the SA Police, they said that while social media has proven a helpful medium for both the community and the police, hoaxes, fake news and dissemination of false information the SAPS has experienced of late not only spread panic among local communities, but also waste the police’s time and resources. On May 30 a social media post alleging the abduction of a girl in Naledi, Soweto, by persons

in a Quantum vehicle (registration number included) went viral. After an immediate and thorough investigation, the owner of the Quantum was traced and could prove that the vehicle had been parked and immobile over the period of the alleged abduction. When the originator of the post was traced for clarity, she could not substantiate her story. In the statement, the police say that many social media posts relating to crime in general and crimes against women, children and vulnerable persons are relevant and helpful to the SAPS. They (the police) also participate on social media platforms in order to interact with communities and obtain their views and inputs. “Policing is a consultative and collaborative process

how the reckless or malicious use of social media can cause chaos and even loss of life. “While state resources are being utilised to verify and investigate hoaxes, the police are being diverted from performing their constitutionally mandated duties of preventing, detecting and combating crime and this is an untenable situation,” said former Acting National Police Commissioner Lt Gen Khomotso Phahlane in the statement. “Just as in the event of a person laying a false criminal charge, those spreading false information through social media, leading to crimes being committed or the fruitless use of state resources, will be investigated and prosecuted or subjected to civil litigation to recover police expenses,” said Phahlane.

and the SAPS has no intention of serving and protecting in isolation from communities.” Hoaxes and false posts, some published to extract revenge on an individual, to attract attention or make a lover jealous, not only divert the police’s stretched resources, but can also have far-reaching repercussions. An example is the recent violence that erupted in KwaMashu in KwaZulu-Natal on May 29. The incident began with an allegation on social media of trafficking human body parts by persons who were identified. It escalated into looting and violent protest actions during which two people were shot, one of whom died. The police were also fired upon as they attempted to neutralise the situation. The police said that this is a clear example of

PORT Elizabeth residents should start preparing themselves for windy weather that lies ahead this week. Severe storm conditions that have been forecast for the Western Cape will only have a limited effect on the Nelson Mandela Bay area, said the SA Weather Services. According to Garth Sampson, Client Liaison Officer for the South African Weather Services in the Eastern Cape, the second cold front that hit Cape Town this week does not hold much in store for Port Elizabeth except for a lot of wind and lower temperatures.

“While some showers are expected along the south coast, most of the rain will impact on the Western Cape and not much can be expected over the Eastern Cape.” The cold front should reach the Eastern Cape by tomorrow (Thursday) morning and is expected to bring extremely windy weather with it. Gale force westerly winds can be expected along the south coast on Thursday with gusts of up to 100km/h possible in places. High seas with wave heights from 6m to 9m are also expected along the south coast. There is also a possibility of light snow on the Sneeuberg near Graaff-Reinet through to the southern Drakensberg in the Barkley East and Elliot area.

Doreen Arndt, founder and head of the committee, along with four other women, have taken it upon themselves to raise funds for the Pinelands Neighbourhood Watch, various charities and other worthy causes. They recently hosted their first community project – a clean-up at their local “dam” which Arendt described as “overgrown and filthy.” “A lot of ‘unwelcome guests’ have been found lurking in the thick grass and now that it is clean, the visibility is so much better for our patrollers, the SAPS, Atlas and ADT,” she said. The ladies set up food stalls at the event to raise money to better equip the members of the neighbourhood watch. They also donated about two dozen leftover hotdog rolls to the MTR Smit Children’s Home. “What inspired me the most to create the committee is the fact that while not everyone is able to patrol like our dedicated patrollers, we as a community can support them in other ways and we would be helping them help us,” Arendt said. “I hope that we can contribute towards some of the expenses that patrollers have incurred, like petrol and the equipment they have bought. We also want to collect enough funds so that we

Using two industrial weed eaters, sponsored by Talisman Plant and Tool Hire in Willow Road, and other tools the Pinelands residents cleaned up their local “dam” recently. PHOTOS:LYLE KNICKELBEIN can have a camera system installed in the area for more visibility.” Arendt added that they want to create more awareness of the neighbourhood watch and how the community can stand together to fight and prevent crime in the area. According to her, Pinelands is a very small, close-knit community and keeping in touch with each other is easy as they have social, security and street groups on WhatsApp. The women of the Community Fundraising Committee are not planning to stop at just a day’s work either – the clean-up project will run for a full three months. They are also planning to host a day of family fun and picnics, fundraisers for charities, competitions and a biannual dinner and dance.

Doreen Arndt, founder of the Community Fundraising Committee, also got her hands dirty during the clean-up event.

SIMBONGILE MDLEDLE EASTERN Cape Department of Human Settlements MEC Helen Sauls-August has given the go-ahead to all municipalities to reallocate unoccupied RDP houses to other qualifying beneficiaries. This could be done following the deregistration of approved beneficiaries who had not taken ownership of their statesubsidised houses. Sauls-August’s announcement was good news for the many citizens of the Eastern Cape who have described vacant RDP houses as hives of criminal activity. Most people who spoke to the Express took their hats off to the government for the initiative, stating that it was long overdue. Zimbane Valley resident Nasiphi Myeki said the reallocation of houses would benefit communities as those who occupied them illegally would be removed. She said the beneficiaries of housing projects in the province supported the government’s plan. “The government should ensure no one occupied a house without valid documents or title deeds, as people who were not beneficiaries sometimes took over homes by force or with the help of their political connections, said Myeki. Sauls-August revealed that this year alone the department planned to lodge, transfer and issue 10 000 title deeds. She said municipalities had to trace missing beneficiaries through advertisements, and allow for a response period of 21 days before commencing with the deregistration of a beneficiary. Sauls-August advised against taking short cuts in the deregistration process. “If legal processes are not followed to the letter, the process becomes illegal. The deregistration process must be done correctly, she said. Her department had learnt that some municipalities were struggling to trace beneficiaries whose houses had been completed. Despite the department’s continuous effort to deliver housing projects in the province, housing units remained unoccupied and subject to vandalism. “Unoccupied houses also delay the transfer and issuing of title deeds to correct beneficiaries, she said.

When Will Jesus Return to The Earth?

JonPaul is Sun Boardwalk Mr PE uberMANn 2017

2,000 years ago Jesus Christ promised “I will come again” John 14:3

But He has not yet returned, so is

the promise still valid?

When Jesus Christ ascended to heaven from the Mount of Olives the angels testified: “ The same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as you have seen him to go into heaven” (Acts: 1:11). So, as literally and physically as He went to heaven, so He will return. Photo: Jerusalem at night from the Mount of Olives

ADVERTORIAL: YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS

Entrepreneurial course helps New Brighton pupils, parents A PROJECT to equip pupils at New Brighton’s Charles Duna Primary School with entrepreneurial skills may have benefits that stretch far beyond the classroom and into the community. “Eighty percent of my parents here at Charles Duna are unemployed,” said Principal Nombulelo Sume. “We are teaching our pupils not to wait for employment, but to create their own employment. We are planting a seed that, even while they are at school they can create their own businesses.” She is hopeful not only that the skills they learn will help the learners break the cycle of poverty most families face, but also that the entrepreneurial bug might spread from pupil to parent and that parents will be inspired to start up their own small businesses. The Charles Duna programme, which includes 68 pupils from Grade 1 to 7, falls under the community outreach wing of the national Young Entrepreneurs (YE) programme, which was introduced in Port Elizabeth earlier this year, to equip youngsters with the tools to run their own businesses and manage their finances. YE’s outreach initiative sees private sector sponsors working in partnership with the YE Foundation Trust to ensure that less fortunate children can also benefit from the formal YE programme, which is attended by pupils from nine different schools in Nelson Mandela Bay. Sume said, “The children are making products which they are going to sell at a market day – and I’ve told them they must use the money they make to buy more materials to make and sell more products. I have told my parents that we want their support with the programme, whether their child is in Grade 1 or Grade 7. I’m hoping some parents will team up with their children to make their own family businesses.” The pupils’ product range includes decorative gift bags, bracelets, earrings, brooches, stationery holders, bird feeders and picture frames.

GIVE YOUR CHILD

The formal YE programme runs for 30 weeks a year (15 weeks Entrepreneurship and 15 weeks Financial Literacy) and caters for learners from Grade 1 to 9. Ansulene Prinsloo, owner of the Young Entrepreneurs franchise in Port Elizabeth, said, “The children gain invaluable business, life and financial literacy skills from the practical experience of starting their own business, which entails coming up with a name and logo, registering the business, creating and manufacturing products and then selling these at a market day. They also learn how to manage their money, with a strong focus on saving, spending, sharing and investing. “With high unemployment rates accompanied by low economic growth rates, our children as the next generation need to be more entrepreneurialminded to ensure that they have a sustainable future. By setting up their own businesses, they will not only generate income for themselves, but many more jobs will be created - contributing to the development of our country and economy.”

From left are Chuma Twane (8), Ongaziwe Vuta (8) and Sinazo Ramncwane (8), three Charles Duna Primary School pupils who cannot wait to sell the products they made including gift bags, gift cards and jewellery.

Trust fund for Shaninlea (34) after tragic illness ANIKA DE BEER “I DON’T know that I would have survived what she did. She is absolutely the strongest person I know and an inspiration to us all.” This is how Rob Nicholson describes his niece, Shaninlea Visser (34), affectionately known as ‘Shan’, who was struck by a lifethreatening illness which has changed her life dramatically in the space of a few months. Visser moved from Durban to Port Elizabeth with her 10-year-old daughter, Kiara, in January this year and fell ill soon after. She was admitted to Life St George’s Hospital on January 18 and, after being moved to the ICU, doctors told her family that she had

a 50/50 chance of surviving due to kidney and liver failure. At the time, Visser’s husband, Anthony, was in Pennington and flew down to be with her. Since being admitted to hospital, she has undergone at least 20 operations. The first of the procedures took place on February 6 when both her legs were amputated below the knee. Two days later, on February 8, both arms were amputated between the elbow and wrist as well. Then, on February 17, a plastic surgeon started removing the dead tissue around her lips and removed her nose tip. Visser was then moved from ICU to High Care before being transferred to Netcare Greenacres Hospital.

At first, no one was certain just what illness she had or what the cause of it was, but it was later discovered that a stomach bug was responsible, which led to septicaemia and Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC). Septicaemia is an infection of the blood which can lead to sepsis if left untreated and DIC is a condition in which blood clots form in the body’s smaller vessels. “The bacteria got into her bloodstream and caused the blood to move to all the organs and away from her extremities. Her body went into shock,” Nicholson said. Visser is currently in Aurora Hospital. According to Nicholson, she will probably need two or three more operations. “There is nothing and no one to blame for this. We just have to look forward now,” he said. The family’s biggest concern now is raising the funds necessary to pay all the bills. “Her medical aid is paying most of her medical bills which is fantastic, but she’s going to need a caregiver for the rest of her life and we don’t yet know how she’s going

to pay for the prosthetics. Donations would be a huge assistance,” Nicholson said. Nicholson’s daughter, Tamaryn, added, “Shan will need more physiotherapy and occupational therapy in a rehabilitation facility. Alterations will need to be done to the home that she moves into to help her cope with everyday life.” In an effort to raise awareness and funds for Visser, Nicholson came to Port Elizabeth from Johannesburg on Tuesday, May 30, to share her story with various local radio stations. The family has set up a trust fund in Visser’s name. “We just want her to live the happiest and most normal life possible after this tragedy,” Tamaryn Nicholson said. “She is the most positive and strong woman whose story I know will be such an inspiration to others. She already has plans to write a book and do inspirational speeches to turn her situation into a positive one. She deserves all the help she can get.” Anyone willing to assist Shaninlea Visser can contact Rob Nicholson on 082 574 5324 or robdtm@vodamail.co.za.

Booysen Park to start knitting club

PE youngster is star in the making ANIKA DE BEER AT only eight years old, Mé-Jean du Preez, a Grade 3 learner at Newton Park Primary School, has proven that dynamite truly does come in small packages.

A group of girls from Booysen Park High School formed part of a Columba Leadership Programme for a week and are now looking to start their own knitting club as part of the project. They will be taught to knit a school scarf for themselves. Though the school has knitting needles for the girls, they need wool. Donations of maroon and grey wool would be highly appreciated. Contact the school on 041 483 1984. At the back, from left, are Donay Meyer, Kelly Erasmus, Sanelisiwe Mnconywa and Joslyn Kettledas. Cameron Acar, a Grade 11 learner at Harvest Christian School, participated in the Nelson Mandela Bay Schools Chess individual trials on May 27. He finished on a full score, taking first place in the tournament for the u/18 boys. He qualified to participate in the Eastern Cape Schools Chess trials which took place in King William’s Town on June 3.

‘Remembering the SS Mendi’ exhibition to close

Contributors to the publication participated in poetry workshops facilitated by Brian Walter and assisted by Olwethu Mxoli and Leonie Williams. Selected poems will be performed on the night and will be accompanied by a recital of the famous hymn Ama-Gora e-Mendi. Poetry has been central to the story of the SS Mendi. Poet SEK Mqhayi, who was the Imbongi ye Sizwe (National Bard) of the Xhosa people at the time of the First World War, felt deeply about the disaster as he had played a formative role in the recruitment campaign through a poem that he wrote calling men to arms titled, The Black Army. In response to the tragedy, he wrote UKUTSHONA KUKAMEND (The sinking of the Mendi), which kept the memory of the event alive in the oral narrative of the Xhosa communities

crowned Miss Mini Newton Park at her school. “She is truly a go-getter and a persistent child who wants to do everything and always gives her best. She definitely belongs on the stage,” said her mother, Mollie.

Harvest Christian High School recently held the annual Best Speaker Competition. All the finalists delivered outstanding speeches on the topic, ‘That’s Life’. The participants were judged on the content, as well as the delivery of their speeches. Asakhe Nxonono (left), a Grade 9 learner, was recognised as the Junior Best Speaker, while Sanelisiwe Nguta, a Grade 12 learner, took the honours in the senior category. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

Du Preez started making a name for herself before she could even walk or talk when she was named PE Express’ Front Page Christmas Baby in 2008 and the winner of the Walmer Park Baby Competition in the 0-6 months age category. She got a taste for the spotlight back then and has never looked back. Since then, she has competed in the ATKV Redenaars competition twice and participated in the PE Dance Festival where she received a gold medal for her first solo item. Mé-Jean was also in the Talent Africa competition where she has received a total of seven gold and two silver medals. She has also been chosen for the South African team who will be representing the country at the Talent America International Competition in New York this July. To top it all off, she was also recently

in the Eastern Cape during the Apartheid years when black historical events were written out of the history books. The Remembering the SS Mendi exhibition reimagined the tragic event in a vast series of tableaux depicting the brave men of the Fifth Battalion, the South African Native Labour Corps, who died in this nautical disaster. It was first exhibited in 1993 at the National Art’s Festival held in Grahamstown. The Art Museum purchased the exhibition for the collection in 1995. Remembering the tragic loss of life when the SS Mendi sank, has become a rallying point in Post-Apartheid South Africa to recover the lost history of black soldiers and the role these men played in World War One. To complement the closing event, the Friends of the Art Museum asked Hillary Graham to conduct a walkabout of his exhibition on June 8 at 3pm. Graham will also conduct a drawing workshop on June 10 at the Harbour from 9am to 11am. The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum is open on weekdays, excluding Tuesday mornings, from 9am to 5pm. Entry is free. For more info contact 041 506 2000 or go to www.artmuseum.co.za.

Popular celebrity crossover event is heading back to JBay REPORTER THE fourth edition of the popular celebrity crossover sports event, the Oakley X Over powered by Sharp, is heading back to Jeffreys Bay in July. The Oakley X Over is one of the highlights of the JBay Winterfest and the highprofile sporting celebrities add much excitement to the festival. The Oakley X Over comprises three disciplines and the athletes are put through their paces in their hunt for the coveted title. The golf tournament will take place at The Links Golf Course in St Francis, the mountain bike race will head off from the Fountains Mall in JBay and the much-heralded surfing contest venue is the Lower Point in JBay. “As the anticipation builds for the Oakley X Over 2017, we have the strongest field of supreme athletes to date, which includes debuts for AB De Villiers, Jean De Villiers and Schalk Burger,” said X Over founder and Oakley South Africa Sports Marketing and Events Manager Seth Hulley. “This is the fourth year of the event, and the athletes have become a close-knit group of people. They are all friends, but the hunt for the Oakley X Over 2017 title is a serious matter among such competitive people.” The Oakley X Over powered by Sharp will kick off on July 20 with the Mountain Bike event. The race will start at 12 noon from the Fountains Mall and will consist of a 15km route, finishing back at the mall. On July 21, the day’s proceedings will start off with the fiercely contested surf event at the Lower Point in JBay. The first group will hit the water at 8am. The athletes will then head over to the St Francis Links Golf Course after the surfing event for the nine-hole tournament. Hosted by Jeff Clause, the golf tournament is always a popular leg of the X Over and well attended by fans and media. The golf tournament also signals the end

Another highlight of the Oakley X Over is the attendance of the St Francis College learners who want nothing else than to meet their heroes. To hang out with the likes of Dale Steyn and AB De Villiers, as well as the popular Bob Skinstad, John Smit, Jean de Villiers, Greg Minnaar and Garreth McLellan is like a dream come true for the sports mad youngsters. “The Oakley X Over is such an awesome event and obviously a highlight of my year,” said event stalwart Bob Skinstad. Now residing in the UK, Bob will be jetting in to attend this year’s event. “I can’t wait to meet up with all the athletes and the rest of the crew that make this event so incredible. This year is my title run year.” The Oakley X Over powered by Sharp will run on July 20 and 21 and form part of the JBay Winterfest which takes place from July 12 to 23. Beauty pageants for youth development ANIKA DE BEER THE Unthinkable Events (Pty) Ltd, a company which was established by an entrepreneur from KwaDwesi, will be hosting a series of beauty pageants to promote youth development in the Nelson Mandela Bay. Vuyolwethu Mbinambina (33) started her company to make sure that young people stay away from unhealthy activities and focus on positive ones. The focus is specifically on minimising drug and alcohol abuse and the number of school dropouts and teenage pregnancies. The Unthinkable Events will be hosting different types of events, including academic awards, school debates and educational camps, in various areas of Nelson Mandela Bay to further their cause. The first of these events is a beauty pageant that will take place on June 30 at Henry Fasi Hall in KwaDwesi. The beauty pageant is split into two age categories. Mr and Miss Cutelligent is for children

aged 6 to 12, while Mr and Miss Beautelligent is for teenagers aged 13 to 18. This first event is only open to residents of the KwaDwesi, KwaDwesi Extension, Joe Slovo and KwaMagxaki areas. After this pageant, The Unthinkable Events will launch similar events in other areas of the Nelson Mandela Bay. Mbinambina is running the event with no budget to speak of. It is her hope that this event will put her on the map to gain funding for future events. She said she has two wonderful ladies lending their support for the event. “I want to create employment for people in the long run. “For the pageant, I bought tiaras, sashes and presents and we have embroidered T-shirts as our uniform,” she said. Mr and Miss Cutelligent and Mr and Miss Beautelligent will take place on June 30 at Henry Fasi Hall in KwaDwesi from 12 noon until 5pm. Entry for the pageant has already closed. Angels give Crystal Palace a tough time SELBY MADIKANE FC Angels played their hearts out in their goalless draw with Crystal Palace in their Motherwell Football Association (MOFA) Premier League clash that was played at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday. Crystal had plenty of goal opportunities, but Angels’ goalkeeper stood his ground. Stanton Siphelele Mambukwe failed to register an opening goal for Crystal in a one-onone situation when Angels’ goalkeeper collected the winger’s effort with ease. Angels’ left winger, Athenkosi Taaibos, then kicked a powerful shot that nearly beat

Crystal goalkeeper Vuyo Bavuma, but the experienced goalkeeper parried the ball over the goals. In another tough battle, Highland Spurs shared a goalless draw with Young Madrid. In another game, Shining Stars’ loyal supporters saw their side going down 3-2 to the newly promoted side City Rangers. Valencia FC managed to secure a hardfought 2-1 win from Real Aces. Wells United snatched a narrow 2-1 victory from the gutsy Young Ideas while Young Tigers failed to overcome Tomorrow Stars who defeated them 2-1. Manchester United thrashed Milan Stars 5-1 in their one-sided clash.

SELBY MADIKANE FANS were treated to a real enterprising local derby when Sophakama Ladies beat Continental Express Ladies 2-0 during their Sasol Ladies Soccer League game at Wolfson Stadium in KwaZakhele on Saturday. The two sides failed to make their glorious opportunities count as their strikers were not composed in front of the goals. Sophakama Ladies’ goalkeeper, Phila Kumalo, denied Continental Express’ midfielder, Noluthando Milo Gojela, a scoring opportunity in the first half after she sent a tricky kick her way. The first half ended in a goalless draw. Continental Express goalkeeper Zanele Dingiswayo was the busiest of the two goal stoppers during the second half.

Express defender Amanda Ngozi managed to contain Sophakama’s left star winger, Thandiswa Pule Mboniswa. Sophakama skipper, Anelisa Nyobo, and midfielder, Anelisa Ndyebi, read each other like open books. The duo initiated a good move that resulted in a world-class opening goal that was banged in by the striker Mmakgashana Kekana. With less than 15 minutes left on the clock, Sophakama increased their lead to 2-0 after Ntombizanele Nyepa came up with a spectacular goal following good play produced by Nyobo and Ndyebi. Busisiwe Mashumi and Nomathamsanqa Maqutyana were at the top of their game, while Siphelele Dlanga and Ayanda Ngozi played a key role for Continental Express. In the end, Sophakama Ladies accumulated the three maximum points with the 2-0 win over their neighbours.

Continental Express’ defender, Amanda Ngozi, clears the lines as Thandiswa Mboniswa tries to tackle her.

IT was all smiles and ecstasy for the Charles Morgan Combined School players after they defeated Nomandi Junior Secondary School 4-2 on penalties during the Copa Coca Cola U/15 Provincial Finals that took place at the Wolfson Stadium in KwaZakhele on Saturday. The seven provincial regions that took each other on were divided into two streams. The regions that formed Stream A were Cowan High School (Nelson Mandela Bay), Telle Junction Junior Secondary School (Joe Gqabi), Nomandi Junior Secondary School (OR Tambo) and Arthur Nganga Junior Secondary School (Alfred Nzo). The regions that formed Stream B were Velile Junior Secondary School (Sarah Baartman), Ekuphumleni Senior Secondary School (Chris Hani) and Charles Morgan Combined School (Amathole). The tournament started off in a round-robin format in each stream, where the group leaders played in the finals. Former Moroka Swallows striker Hareapa Simba Marumo was at the games for the initiative “Which Part Will You Play” in search of an “underdog” (a player with natural talent and good character). Marumo said the project envisions a “Which Part Will You Play” all-star team, made up of well-rounded young South Africans with immense talent carrying values that young footballers should aspire to. “I have selected one player who had made

a huge difference during the tournament. This tournament is the right platform to identify talent. “Here in the Eastern Cape is immense talent and it was very difficult to select a player during this event. In Stream A, Nomandi JSS and Cowan HS had seven points in their group, but the OR Tambo District school had a better goal difference than the hosts. In Stream B, Charles Morgan CS won all their games. Fans saw Nomandi JSS losing 4-2 on penalties to Charles Morgan CS after the game ended in a deadlock. The Amathole School walked away with a trophy and gold medals while OR Tambo School received silver medals. All the regions received new branded kits. Nomandi JSS player, Simbongile Hanise, won the “Underdog” award.

Log leaders AmaUnits hammer Eberspacher SELBY MADIKANE NELSON Mandela Bay Masters Association League log leaders AmaUnits made their intentions clear when they hammered Eberspacher in a 7-0 win at the Molefe Primary School Grounds in New Brighton on Sunday. KwaZakhele-side AmaUnits taught the Eberspacher team a free soccer lesson and the team from Deal Party could not register any goals. Eberspacher’s defence was very jittery and as a result, they were severely punished by their counterparts. AmaUnits’ top goal scorer, Anele January, scored a hat trick while Bangisizwe Bona and Eddie Fani pulled a brace each. In another game, Eleven Attackers conquered Villagers 4-2 in their Motherwell battle at the Shining Stars Field. Gcobani Bolo scored a brace, while Mthunzi Zane Mrwebi and Thembelani Kimsho

Kondlo each scored an odd goal. Kagiso Madida Lebuso and Khaya Shenxane scored a goal each for Villagers. New Brighton also secured a well-deserved 2-1 win over PE All Stars at the Molefe Primary School Grounds. Mbulelo Funde and Kwanele Dzadza kicked the goals for the New Brighton-side, while Monde Dikana scored All Stars’ consolation goal. Sparks Masters registered an emphatic 4-0 victory over Young Pirates at VW Pavilion. Thanduxolo Gxwalintloko, Zola Chacklas Zuzile, Thando Kana and Sizwe Hani scored a goal each for Sparks. VW Masters defeated Soweto Masters 2-0 with Siyabonga Makhangela and Simphiwe Williams coming up with a goal each for VW Masters. Winners shared a goalless draw with PE Eleven at KwaDwesi Community Grounds while Zwide Masters were awarded soft points after Gqeberha Masters failed to pitch up for the game.

New Volkswagen Golf launched in South Africa REPORTER THE updated Volkswagen Golf has been recently been launched in South Africa with a revised engine line-up, more technology, new infotainment, improved connectivity and revised styling with the retail price starting at R289 900. With global sales now well in excess of 33 million since its launch more than four decades ago, the updated version of the seventh generation Golf is once again redefining its market segment by bringing ‘big car’ technology to the compact family car class. Now standard across the range are LED rear lights, for instance, while all derivatives across model line-up are also now offered with a new generation of larger and more sophisticated touchscreen infotainment systems. The new Golf boasts some technical innovations. For the first time in the compact class the new Discover Pro radio-navigation system can be operated via gesture control. Sporting a 9.2-inch touch screen, the optional system complements the Active Info Display. As before, the new car sits on the now familiar MQB, or Modularer Querbaukasten platform, which means it benefits from the latest available technology and shares elements of its underpinnings with other successful new models such as the awardwinning Passat and latest Tiguan. The new Golf employs technologies that will significantly improve safety. These include the Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert, as well as Adaptive Cruise Control with Front Assist and Autonomous Emergency Braking System. Trailer Assist including Park Assist is optionally available across the range and ordered in conjunction with the swivelling towbar. The system helps reverse a trailer or caravan with a weight of up to 1 800kg into a parking bay or entrance from the street. To operate, the Golf driver simply engages reverse gear and activates the system via a push button. The driving angle and subsequent possible driving angles are displayed on the instrument cluster. All the

driver then has to do is operate the accelerator pedal and brake, while the system automatically controls the direction of the car, using Park Assist to move the trailer backwards into the required position. The progressive digitisation of Golf is supported by the debut of the highly efficient 1.0 TSI engine with 81kW power output. The 999cc engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and has claimed combined fuel consumption of 4.8 litres per 100 kilometres. Meanwhile, Volkswagen has strengthened the appeal of the iconic Golf GTI. It now develops 169kW, an increase of 7kW from its predecessor as was found in the GTI Performance. All Golfs at launch also feature BlueMotion Technologies such as a stop-start system and a mode for storing braking energy (regenerative braking). Design modifications include new bumpers front and rear, new halogen headlights with LED daytime running lights or full LED headlights standard on GTI and optional in other derivatves - instead of xenon headlights, new front wings, and, as mentioned, new full LED rear lights as standard for all Golf versions. New wheel designs and body colours complete the exterior update, while fresh trim panels and materials also upgrade the interior of the Golf. Standard features

Can Mercedes stem Ferrari’s momentum FORMULA 1 swops Monaco for Montreal as it heads to the seventh round of the season around Canada’s Gilles Villeneuve circuit. The flowing circuit set in the heart of the St Lawrence Seaway, has become a classic on the F1 calendar, which often turns up unpredictable races. Although it’s one of the shorter circuits, it’s flowing nature allows for close racing and, though limited, some chances for overtaking. While the average lap speed is significantly higher than at the last round in Monaco the close proximity of the walls and barriers create the impression of a street circuit. The demand on brakes is some of the highest experienced in the entire season. For the first time in more than a decade the ardent Canadian fans will have a local driver in the mix. Williams’ Lance Stroll will be the first Canadian to race on home soil since Jacques Villeneuve’s retirement in 2006. So far, Stroll’s journey into F1 hasn’t been an easy one with several retirements and a couple of mistakes making for a brutal introduction to the sport. Nevertheless, if the Montreal native is going to step up anywhere this would be the best place to do so.

In 2016 the Canadian Grand Prix was well within Sebastian Vettel’s grasp, but it slipped through Ferrari’s fingers as they called an ill-advised strategy, which cost them victory. While the German comfortably held off second-placed Hamilton, the Ferrari pitwall decided to opt for a two-stop strategy while Mercedes ran a onestop race, which ultimately resulted in the top step of the podium for Hamilton. The picture in 2017 looks far different than twelve months ago. This weekend Vettel arrives in Canada with a healthy lead in the championship and with a car quick enough to challenge for victory. However, there is a suspected reliability issue with the turbo unit on Vettel’s Ferrari. If the unit has to be replaced it could mean a five place grid penalty for the championship leader. But while it remains only a threat without official confirmation of a penalty, Ferrari will be feeling confident ahead of the weekend. The efficiency of their aerodynamic package in 2017 has proven to be top of the class in the field and should come into its own around the circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The most significant area in which Ferrari hold an advantage is its relative-

ly big set-up window. The coveted sweet spot of balance between both axles of the car seem easier to come by for Ferrari than its championship rivals, Mercedes. It is this specific factor that is Ferrari’s biggest advantage in 2017. Further to Ferrari’s advantage is the combination of ultra- and supersoft tyre compounds nominated by Pirelli for this Grand Prix weekend. The Ferrari’s liking of the ultrasoft tyre stems from its ability to bring the compound into its optimal working range quicker than Mercedes as was seen in Monaco and Russia. Still, Merc is far from out of the equation. The naturally cooler temperatures often experienced over the Canadian race weekend will be to the advantage of Mercedes as it decreases the operating temperature window of the tyre. The Canadian GP weekend is an interesting one for Mercedes as both Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas have shone, to varying degrees, on this circuit. While Ferrari has shown no qualms in advancing the interests of Vettel, as the championship leader, it begs the question as to what call Mercedes will make should Bottas be in front of Hamilton.

African Leopards bask in lucky run in PELFA Legends League Stevenson netted his second goal of the game 15 minutes before the final whistle. Priory finally registered their first win of the season when they beat PE City 2-0 at the Victoria Park Sports Club. Rory Mortimer scored a goal in each half for Priory. Shamrocks and NMBM had a real battle on their hands and seven goals were scored in this humdinger. Naj Padachie put Shamrocks ahead 1-0 five minutes into the game and Troy Packrisamy came by 11 minutes later to give them a 2-0 lead. NMBM fought hard and eventually pulled a goal back just before half-time. Shamrocks went into half-time 2-1 up. NMBM equalised about seven minutes into the second half. However, not long after that, Shamrocks pulled ahead 3-2 after a field goal from Naj Padachie. Once again, NMBM found themselves behind and put huge pressure on their opponents’ goals. The pressure paid off when they eventually equalised with some eight minutes left on the clock. Further pressure on Shamrocks’ goalmouth by NMBM paid off when Shamrocks conceded a goal and handed NMBM a well-de-

AFRICAN Leopards were the lucky ones in last week’s games in the Port Elizabeth Legends Football Association (PELFA) League. Playing against Westpark on their home turf, Leopards whipped them 4-0. Leopards led the match 2-0 at half time, where Lwazi Gobane and Ncedisa Goniwe scored their goals midway through the first half. Tabo Simani scored Leopards’ third goal a few minutes after the start of the second half and his brace came with about 18 minutes left in the game. In another game, Hearts and Callies went head-to-head in their battle at The Oval with Callies eventually winning 3-2. Anton Bellairs scored the opening goal for Callies about 13 minutes into the first half after some solid midfield play. Hearts fought back and Ian Stevenson scored an equalising goal for Hearts just before half time. A few minutes after the break, Jonathan Peterson added another goal to Callies’ tally. About halfway through the second half, after a long ball down the middle, Karl Pereira put Callies 3-1 ahead. Hearts tried their best to breach Callies’ defence and eventually succeeded when Ian

Runners gear up for NMB ASA 21.1km REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Athletics South Africa 21.1km Championships will set the pace in grand style on Saturday, June 24, with a racing prize purse and lucky draw prizes worth over R645 000. The Eastern Province Athletics President, Selby Thabethe, said the local committee was proud to host this major event on the road running calendar since 2014. Thabethe said this top-tier event, which receives televised coverage, showcases the Eastern Cape from a tourism standpoint. “With the support of our title sponsor, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and Athletics South Africa, we aim to grow this event year on year into one of the finest races in South Africa,” said Thabethe. With R500 000 for the elite field to compete for, Alan Taylor, race director, said South Africa’s top athletes had already confirmed their participation. The 2016 men and women top ten finishers from both Kenya and Ethiopia will be defending their titles. “The NMB ASA 21.1km Championships allows locals the opportunity to race against the best in the country and, therefore, develops running in the region,” said Taylor. The event director, Mike Mbambani, welcomed the race’s new partner, Eastern Cape Motor Group, who have sponsored a brandnew Datsun Go vehicle prize, valued at R106 900, as a superb incentive for participating runners. “The car is the highlight of our lucky draw competition, which means you don’t have to win one of the races to win it!” said Mbambani. He said the car draw would bring the prizegiving to an exciting conclusion after the 21.1km cut off at 11.30am on the Saturday. The official prize-giving ceremony will take place at Pollock Beach race village, Summer-

strand. “Anyone who enters the 21.1km or 5km races will be eligible for the car prize – but you must be there to claim it.” Five finalists will be drawn for a nail-biting finale to see who wins the car. Adidas will be sponsoring a R2 000 gift voucher for the four consolation prize winners. The NMB ASA 21.1km Championships, which is an official participation and league event, has grown in response to the needs of the running community. “There’s been a host of changes this year to ensure that we keep improving, said race director, Alan Taylor. “An example of this would be the new timing facility for the 5km finishers who have enjoyed this service with their park runs and will not miss out at this event.” He said the NMB ASA 21.1km Championship event had incentivised school involvement with a generous prize of sport equipment to the value of R30 000 for the top five schools with the most bulk entries. The 21.1km route, credited as the fastest in South Africa, will start and finish at Pollock Beach, Summerstrand. Taylor said he hoped that the public would turn out in their numbers at the start/finish venue at Pollock Beach to witness top running and support family and friends. The course record is currently held by 2016 male and female winners, Edwin Koech, in a time of 1.01.16, and Sheila Chesang, with 1.10.58. Last year’s event saw outstanding results, with eight of the top twenty men running their personal best times and seven of the top twenty women achieving their best times. The best South African performance for 2016 was recorded in Nelson Mandela Bay last year for each of the age categories, with the exception of the 60-69 men and 70+ women categories, reinforcing the pace of this exciting course.

Last year’s winner, Edwin Koech, won the 21.1km race in a record course time of 1.01.16. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

“I love this course, especially if there is not too much wind, and hope to run my personal best in 69 or 70 minutes,” said Lebogang Phalula, from CGA, the third women to finish last year in 1.11.35. Runners competing in the 21.1km race will need to complete two fast laps, along the spectator-friendly beachfront. Starting from Marine Drive, at Pollock Beach, they will head towards Kings Beach then turn and run towards the Humewood Golf Course near Pine Lodge and head back for the second loop before the finish back on the Pollock Beach grass area. A full rolling road closure from 5:30am will ensure a safe run and minimum inconvenience for the public. The 21.1km road race starts at 8am and the 5km fun run starts at 7:30am. Vehicles will gain access to the start from 8th Avenue as well as from 2nd Avenue into the Bird Rock parking area on the seaside until 7am on race day. Parking is available on the seaside of Marine Drive, in the Something Good parking

area and on the grass area opposite 9th Avenue. All vehicles parked on the seaside of Marine Drive will not be able to exit before 11:30am, 21.1km race cut-off time. Enter online at www.whereinpe.co.za/ sport or at local sports shops before June 20. Registration and late entries will take place at the Summerstrand Surf Lifesaving Club from 2pm to 8pm on Friday, June 23 and from 5:30 on the morning of race day.
