Budgeted at R18 million, the centre, a first of its kind in the country, offers a venue for both sporting and educational purposes as well as a playground for the younger members of the community. It boasts a main multi-purpose hall that can accommodate 500 people, a soccer pitch, courts for indoor sports such as netball, volley ball and basket ball and a gymnasium with a boxing ring with showers for both males and females. In addition there is a sewing room for the elderly and unemployed women in the area, a club house, a room for adult basic education, a computer room and a centre for payment of municipal services. The building, that was erected to the best building standards, is also environmentally friendy using a wind turbine for energy efficiency. “It is important for the community to take ownership of the centre,” said Minister Sexwale.

In addition, the new websites of PE Express’s sister publications, Kouga Express and UD News, will also be launched tomorrow. The websites were developed by 24.com which is part of the Media24 group, which also owns PE Express and its sister community publications. The website has been designed to be very user-friendly with a great emphasis on being interactive. To this effect the public, schools and other community groups can also share their news, views and happenings through the website. There are easy-to-find categories for the regular news,

Readers will also be able to comment on the reports. Our popular Diary/Dagboek, featuring events of nonprofit community organisations such as schools, churches and support groups, will also be available on the website. In addition, the website now offers readers the opportunity to load information on their own events in the Events section of the website. It being an interactive website, readers can also upload their photos and videos. In an effort to join in the fight to keep our neighbourhoods safe, readers can also upload information on criminal activities in their areas on the website to serve as a warning to other residents. On the Netlocal section of
the website, readers can register as users of the website. One does not have to register to read the paper, but must do so to enter for competitions, give comment or to upload events. There is also a section where schools and groups can upload information on their latest happenings. Another useful feature is the weather forecast of the SA Weather Services, the contact details of emergency services, as well as the market indicators and latest Lotto results. The website also features a Local Guide, that is a comprehensive source of information on the local attractions, as well as history of the different suburbs and places in Port Elizabeth. Readers will be able to take part in regular opinion polls and the full paper will be available to page through in pdf format. The website is also designed in such a way that advertisers can use it as a vehicle to reach an even wider target audience.

Nelson Mandela Bay ready for Ward Committee elections NCEBA DLADLA NOMINATION forms are out for the election of 60 Ward Committees making up the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality with voting set for October 10 to 12. The ward councillors were also expected to convene meetings to advise residents of the upcoming elections of the local governing structures. Consisting of a Ward Councillor who acts as Chairperson of the Committee and members of interest groups, the 60 Ward Committees making up this metropolitan municipality are expected to be non-politically inclined, said Communications Director Roland Williams. Williams said it was important that a diversity of interest groups in the Ward be represented. These include representation for the youth, women, religious groups, sports and culture, health and welfare, business, rate-payers associations, the disabled and
the traditional leaders to mention but a few. According to Williams, public consultation engagement took place last week. Nominations were expected in from last week Thursday and the public information meetings will be held from tomorrow (October 6) until October 11. To be able to vote people must be registered voters with a green bar-coded ID book. Only people with a bar-coded ID book who were eligible voters (but are not employees of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality) were allowed as candidates. There are however, prohibitions for those who would like to be elected to the Ward Committees. Williams said a person may not be in arrears to the municipality for rates and service charges for a period longer than three months, must not be an unrehabilitated insolvent and must not have been placed under curatorship. Any person who after February 1997 has been convicted of an offence and sentenced to imprisonment without the option of a fine for a period of 12 months or more cannot be a candidate.

Robbers lead cops to hideout INDABA REPORTER TWO armed robbers were caught redhanded after they led police to their hideout with a tracking device they allegedly stole from a security guard. Police have arrested the men believed to have been involved in the armed robbery at the Sappi Adamas Mill on Sunday morning after tracking a guard’s GPS Locator to their home. Metro Security Services Operations Director, Kaashief Niekerk, said the robbers had raided the guardhouse during the robbery on Sunday, and among the items stolen was a GPS locator, used by the guards on patrol. Niekerk, said the robbery occurred at 5.47am on Sunday, when five men, some armed with firearms, gained access to the premises by climbing over the perimeter fencing. “Our onsite security guards were alerted by perimeter sensors which were activated and went to investigate,” said Niekerk. Niekerk said the guards encountered the armed men, but were chased off the premises by the robbers, who threat-
ened their lives. “We issue our guards with these locators as a safety precaution, as well as a monitoring device, so that we can monitor them while they are doing their perimeter patrols,” he said. Niekerk said when they realised that the GPS locator was missing, they checked their systems and found that the device was still on. “We were able to trace it to an exact address in Jali Street, Kwazakhele and immediately handed this information over to the police,” he said. Niekerk said police acted on the information and raided the house during the early hours of Tuesday morning where they recovered the stolen device and arrested two men. This brings the number arrested in connection with this robbery to three. One suspect was arrested shortly after the incident due to the quick action of the guards, police and ADT. According to Niekerk the guards immediately contacted the control centre after being chased of the premises by the robbers. Additional units, police, and ADT were dispatched. Niekerk said the responding officers lay in wait for the robbers in Grahamstown
Road, where they were able to apprehend one of the five men who was found in possession of computers believed to have been stolen from the site. The other four fled into nearby bushes. Niekerk said the robbers and police exchanged gunfire, but the other four suspects managed to escape – until two of then were found with the GPS Locator. Niekerk said it was refreshing to see brazen criminals, who had openly taunted police during an exchange of gunfire on Sunday, caught through their own stupidity. Niekerk said the success was a clear example of how police and private security companies could work together to fight crime and praised a recent initiative launched between the Mount Road Police Cluster and a number of private security companies in the Port Elizabeth area. “We recently entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the South African Police Service’s Mount Road Cluster, wherein we undertook to share information relating to criminal activity with the police.” “This is a clear example of how such an arrangement has lead to the arrest of dangerous criminals,” he said.

ian nationals who are business people. “Most of the business robberies taking place in the New Brighton Police Station precinct are targeted at the Somali shops. The Somalis own about 100 of the shops in the area,” said Police Spokesperson w.o. Mzoxolo Thobani. According to Thobani, when a Somali national’s shop is robbed members of the community pretend nothing has happened - unlike when a local businessman’s shop is robbed. “We have decided on a programme to integrate the Somalian nationals with the local community and therefore urge members of the community to attend,” said Thobani.

Mamas do magic with rubbish Nosipho Mayinje (60). To make matters worse, a ‘good Samaritan’ said he would deliver recyclable rubbish by the ton. “They excitedly agreed, but are now sitting with 15 tons of non-recyclable rubbish that must be removed,” sighed Jenny Rump. She is the environmental official for the Zwartkops conservation area, an organisation promoting a cleaner environment including the Swartkops River and surrounds, as well as the adjoining parts of Motherwell. “In the past we could bring tourists to come and buy goods from the Mamas, but now it looks so bad that we wouldn’t dare bring any one here to view their goods,” said Rump. Melinda Labuschagne, the metro municipality’s acting assistant director of waste management, has agreed to look into the situation immediately. “A solution is needed. These women do unique work.” Although business is slower, they have not lost hope yet. “We are currently making Christmas decorations,” said Nosiwe Dingaan (45). “And there are people calling us and requesting specific items which we then make,” said Jacobs. ) People can order directly from the Mamas by calling Eunice Jacobs on 0 073 008 7595 or Jenny Rump on 0 082 853 0700.
MARISKA SPOORMAKER WHEN looking at a rubbish dump, she sees anything but rubbish - she sees a hat, mat, candle holder, handbag and much, much more. “Rubbish is never just rubbish,” said Thandeka Wababa (60). “The items I make out of rubbish are sold to help support my family.” Wababa is one of the four ‘Recycling Mamas’ - as they are affectionately known - at the Motherwell Buy Back Centre. They trade as Noziqkamo Art, Handwork and Recycling and have been in business since 1999. Their head office and workshop is a transport container across the road from the Motherwell health centre. There are more containers for storage of recyclable rubbish, “until someone pays to come and collect it,” said Eunice Jacobs (50). Previously there was an independent recycler who sorted the rubbish and took it to various recycling facilities, “but he gave the business to us, since he wasn’t making enough money this way”. But none of the Motherwell Mamas have drivers’ licences, let alone a car. “Enviroserv helped us a lot for almost a year. “One of their drivers always stopped here to collect rubbish. Then we earned some money from it, but at the end of 2006 he retired,” said
From left are Eunice Jacobs, Thandeka Wababa and Nosipho Mayinje who are known as the Motherwell Recycling Mamas creating art from other people’s rubbish. Photo: Werner Hills

From sunset to sunrise, libraries as sources of books, knowledge and information are always visited by those who want to better their lives through education - the key to liberation. Of the 23 libraries in Nelson Mandela Bay, Motherwell’s NU9 library is one of the busiest. Librarian Marianne Terblanche said the NU 9 Library is always busy this time of the year from 9am to 5pm every Monday to Friday and 10am to 1pm every Saturday with the youth seeking information for school projects and assignments. “We serve about 21 schools in Motherwell who come here every day. We do library orientation to help schools that do not get an opportunity to teach their learners about the library and also do activities meant for fun during holidays,” said Terblanche, adding that sometimes Arts and Craft Groups and artists also visit the library to seek information on certain days. But Friends of the NU9 Motherwell Library spokesperson Mandisa Mniki does not believe the only time people read is when they are going to write exams. Instead, she said, Friends of the Library is working with the library staff to encourage members of the community to read. “We work with the library to encourage people - young and old - to read because reading is knowledge and knowledge is power,” said Mniki. Through reading, added Mniki, people get the enrichment programmes and discover the Do it Yourself (DIY) programmes that empower them. “We want to promote the culture of reading as a life-long habit and way of poverty alleviation. People must understand that to be wise, they ought to read; because it is not only good, but reading also helps people discover new things and change their life-styles for the better,” said Mniki.

Argentinian chess player inspires JACOBUS MYBURGH “CHECK mate!” This phrase has rolled off world famous Argentinian chess grandmaster, Pablo Lafuente’s lips many a time. Lafuente is the sixth best chess player in his country and ranks number 2 572 in the world. Last week, however, he was in Port Elizabeth to share his knowledge of the game. His love for chess changed to a career when he had to choose between going to university and the 64 black and white squares on a chess board. He now probably earns a whole lot more than a university degree would have afforded him. Lafuente presented several train-
ing sessions for budding young chess players of the Eastern Province Chess Society at the Radisson Blu Hotel. Additionally he visited underprivileged schools participating in the Auspex Chess Foundation Initiative which assists with the development of chess in schools in the Northern Areas and the Township. According to Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Communications Manager, Manzi Vabaza, local government supports the development of chess in schools as it falls in line with South Africa’s National and Provincial Sports Programme and is one of four sporting codes earmarked to receive priority from Government. Studies from around the world

Tshatshu visits PE NCEBA DLADLA ARE you a Port Elizabeth pupil who has never been to Bayworld, Umhlobo Wenene FM and the Red Location Museum or other tourist attractions in the Metro? Then think again, as the pupils of Tshatshu Primary School in KwaTshatshu near King Williams Town beat you to it. These excited pupils who were accompanied by teachers and parents from the School Governing Body (SGB) arrived in the Friendly City on Wednesday last week and enjoyed themselves until Friday when they went back home. This excursion was planned by the school early in the year as part of celebrating Tourism Month. “This was an exciting and enlight-
ening educational tour. We are very pleased,” said school principal Nomonde Soka. Soka said her pupils were amazed by the treasures of South African history that are being kept in the Red Location Musem in New Brighton. Of course, some children were scared by the reptiles at Bayworld but they really enjoyed the visit to the place because it helped them see many of the things they learn about at school, Soka said proudly. Tour organiser Nokwezi Dywili was fascinated by her pupils’ excitement over their visit to Umhlobo Wenene FM in Cunningham Street, Parsons Hill. “They saw BEE presenters Putco Mafani, Pastor Nozewu and Mafa Bavuma including the visiting Dj Sbu (Leope) of Radio Metro whose company TS records produced East London’s new music sensation Zahara. It was lovely.”

have shown that playing chess by scholars remarkably improves their performance in most school subjects, not only mathematics and science. Chess has also been attributed to improved human social behaviour positively influencing the uptake of knowledge and knowledge manipulation. Lafuente, who was visiting South Africa for the second time, said he enjoyed exposing these children to the “magic” of chess. The magic power lies in the way chess helps develop critical thought. It promotes problem solving and develops reading skills. Mr Ben Nyaumwe, managing director of the Auspex Group, said chess is a very affordable way to get kids to start thinking again. “It helps children to concentrate and improves self esteem. When losing a game, they have to look at ways to avoid a similar situation in future. It also makes them more determined to win in future.” The Foundation has instituted two chess tutors who provide full-time coaching sessions at 8 locally based primary schools. The hope of the Foundation is to fast-track learners who make good progress to be a part of Nelson Mandela Bay Schools Chess Union trials. The initiative aims to strengthen the culture of learning and teaching in schools and hopes to entrench acceptable values among young people, fostering a sense of pride, honour and patriotism. What makes the initiative unique is the incorporation of chess as part of the learning curriculum at participating schools, not merely as an extramural activity.

Deejay Lova Determined 2 Succeed ‘INDABA
REPORTER
NCEBA DLADLA IN celebration of his birthday month, Deejay Lova, launched his second album “Determined 2 Succeed” last weekend.
According to organiser, Star Nyembezi, the event, which is billed as the Clash of the Titans - The Saga continues, is meant to revive and celebrate Hip Hop Spirit in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. It’s the music of Siya the 13th Disciple, Prince, Optophones, Poetic Potent, the Lazy Poet and others that will be playing with the microphone, using poetic lines to inspire and raise the spirit of dogoodism among those present,” said Nyembezi. Admission for those wearing “Hip Hop Elements”, T-shirts, dress code (including blazers and sneakers) is R20 and without these people pay R30 at the door. The show starts at 6pm and runs until 10.30pm and Nyembezi believes it will be fast and furious four-and-half hours of fun - “You snooze, you lose,” he said.

Deejay Lova, aka Dumisani Mbebe, is Nelson Mandela Bay’s own house DJ and producer who will be celebrating his birthday on October 9. From his debut album titled, “Forgetting what is Behind” to his new offering, Deejay Lova has arrived in the big boy’s territory. The 14-track house album has taken his music to another level. It is released by Darkcity Production in partnership with Revolver Music Distributors from Durban and the album has been available in all music shops since the weekend of October 1. The sound and beats are of international standard. It is a combination of “deep house” and main-
stream “commercial house” music. It caters for both deep house fanatics and those who enjoy the lighter side of house music. In this album DJ Lova continues with his utilisation of both local and national talent. Track 7, called “Nankumntu” features local poet, 19-year old Andisiwe from Zwide (Poetic Soul). This song is already popular on local and national radio stations. Also popular on radio station’s playlists are

Motherwell Junior Tournament a huge success SELBY MADIKANE FOUR U-13 teams organised a highly successful football tournament at Motherwell’s NU8 community fields recently. The teams locking horns were Real Strikers, Tomorrow Stars and Young Stars from Motherwell, and Arsenal from Veeplaas. Young Stars snatched a 4 - 2 victory from Real Strikers after a full time score of 1 - 1.The Stars’s goal came courtesy of Samkelo Budaza, while Siphesihle Ngabase scored for Strikers. Stars’s goalkeeper, Ayabonga Tyoba, who pulled brilliant saves throughout the game, was a very deserved man of the match. Sipho Hashe and Ebongweni clash in girls cricket SELBY MADIKANE PUPILS turned out in droves when Sipho Hashe Combined School and Ebongweni Primary clashed in Kwazakhele Primary Schools zone KFC U-10 Girls’ cricket match at the Wolfson Stadium. Sipho Hashe racked up 57 runs for the loss of
8 wickets and the Ebongweni put up a good performance, but fell short when their last wicket fell with only 42 runs on the score board. Daniel Dlali, Ebongweni coach, said he was very happy with his team’s performance. “They threw everything they had into the game. To lose is normal and it gives the team a chance to identify mistakes which can be prevented in future”, said Dlali.

This was the essence of the talk between the boxing veterans committee, the Department of Sport in Nelson Mandela Bay and the Municipality’s Recreation and Cultural Services Directorate at the Lilian Ngoyi Sports Centre in Kwazakhele, Port Elizabeth last Tuesday. The meeting was held to discuss plans for the official launch of the boxing veterans structure to be held at the Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton on Saturday, October 15. “There is a need for boxing veterans to work in tandem with Nelson Mandela Bay Boxing Organisation and local boxing promoters because you all have a common goal - that of developing and promoting boxing in the metro,” said Recreation and Cultural Services Director, Vuyani Limba. During the meeting, which Limba chaired, a critical look at the dwindling number of boxing clubs and boxers was taken and it was decided that it was necessary for the
veterans to come back - otherwise, the great history of the sport in the metro will be buried and forgotten. The importance of forming local amateur clubs and attracting the youth to start participating in the game was emphasised. With the help of the Departments of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture the veterans are expected to present a blue-print highlighting a plan to go to schools to introduce boxing to be offered in schools like other olympic sports. “We want to assist you in starting boxing clubs and training these young children. We also expect you to go to schools and train pupils in the art of the game; we’ll support you as government,” said Limba. Eastern Cape Sports Council President Khusta Magada lauded the meeting where government officials and the boxing veterans sat together “under one roof” to discuss pertinent issues of sporting development. “We as the Sports Council in the province want to commend this initiative. It bodes well for the development of boxing as sport,” Magada said. “We are happy. This was a very fruitful meeting. From now onwards nothing is going to stop us from doing what we love,” said Veterans Association chairman, Ace Makaluza.
After a very fruitful meeting at the Lilian Ngoyi Sports Centre were from left, former boxer Xolisa Gladile, EC Sports Coucil President Khusta Magada, SRAC Assistant Director Mwelase Mboxela, Shapes Ngcukana (ex boxer), Mandela Bay Culture Director Vuyani Limba, Veterans Association Chairperson Ace Makuluza, in front is Mpho Shupi and at the back is Linda Nondza ba (both former boxers).
