New public swimming pools for KwaNobuhle and Zwide NCEBA DLADLA DROUGHT in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is finally over; so willing and able residents can soon go to their nearby swimming pools and enjoy themselves again, said Municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron. In fact, according to Baron, some of the Bay’s swimming pools have opened their doors already while maintenance work and employment of staff, which is now complete, will soon make it possible for the remaining pools to open their doors. Baron has also announced the good news of the opening, on 1 December, of two public swimming pools, each costing R16 million, in Zwide in Port Elizabeth and next to the Indoor Sports Centre in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage. “A couple of years ago during the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality’s Masithethisane Community Outreach Programme, people of KwaNobuhle indicated strongly that they wanted a swimming pool. And now, they have it,” Baron told PE Express Indaba. According to Baron, the public swimming pool in Zwide was built as part of the 2010/2011 Financial Year budget, adding that in the 2011/2012 Financial Year the municipality will build a public swimmingpool in New Brighton as well. Local residents got employment opportunities during the construction of the pools; and will also be assured of employment opportunitiesfor their day to day maintenance, according to Baron. Baron said residents should also look out for information about “Learn to swim” programmes aimed at benefitting township residents during school holidays. “It is right on our doorstep, in the township. I want to thank our government for this swimming pool,” said Phindezwa Tose (27), East Cape Midlands College student and mother of two from KwaNobuhle. Tose

said she was happy her children will not have to go into town in order to learn basic skills and sports like swimming. Nelson Mandela Bay Department of Sport and Recreation’s Sport and

Community Liaison Thembisile Mengu said he was certain that by the first week of December all public swimming pools will be opened. His department, Mengu said, was busy sorting out all the logistics and

problems that resulted in some pools not opening up as planned. “We’ve got everything ready at the KwaNobuhle and Zwide swimmingpools, so we’ll be opening next week for people to come and swim,” said

ADVERTORIAL: Boston College Boston – epitome of professionalism ‘Professionalism is knowing how to do it, when to do it, and doing it’.

Tuition towards UNISA LLB BCom BCompt & BBA degrees offered from 2012

1B5386F9N-231111-PX-eb-camp

Becoming professional in the real sense of the word, is an ongoing process that may baffle newcomers to the world of work, especially those who have not been exposed to other professional and corporate workers. For this reason Boston City Campus and Business College encourages professional behaviour from their learners, during course attendance, to give them exposure to professional expectations that they will need to meet when they reach the real world of work. “Not everyone understands the need for punctuality and meeting what is expected of you, but at Boston we make these part of the qualification expectations, and thus groom learners to contribute on a meaningful scale in their new jobs,” says Natalie Rabson of Boston City Campus and Business College. The problem is that what one person regards as being professional, another one would see otherwise. “The bottom-line is that to be regarded as a professional in your field of work you have to meet the needs of those you deal with, without fail,”says Rabson. “Needs vary from employer to employer and from company culture to company culture which is why some may view you as being the epitome of professionalism while the next employer thinks you’re barely competent.” Competence is a major factor in determining professionalism. As Frank Tyger puts it, “Pro-

1B5VCWF9N-231111-PX-eb-FURN

fessionalism is knowing how to do it, when to do it, and doing it.” To be a professional is to use education, experience and training to do work, analyse, problem-solve and make sound decisions – all this while adhering to timelines and behaviour that is appropriate for the particular environment you’re working in. Competence and skills are a good foundation, but not enough. There are other factors that play a role, Rabson points out. Though the definitions and requirements differ, the following basics are accepted widely in the workplace as being ‘professionalism’ essentials: Punctuality – a professional is on time for work, meetings and meeting deadlines. In cases where an agreed deadline cannot be met for good reason, he or she informs or forewarns the relevant parties. Taking responsibility – a professional takes responsibility for his actions and for the work he delivers. This includes owning up to mistakes. It is not professional to blame outside circumstances. It is also not professional to go into elaborate explanations that hold no relevance to the task at hand. Respect – a professional doesn’t necessarily have to agree with everything but needs to respect other people and their policies, procedures, beliefs, values, culture and so on. He or she needs to give others space to express themselves and be ‘heard’. Appropriate dress - business suits do not define professionalism; however, the professional situation defines which clothes you should wear. How you look defines how people see your professional being, inside and out. Appropriate behaviour - avoid becoming as personal at work as you would at home. Personal preferences, stories, feelings are not always appropriate. A professional won’t disclose confidential customer information; he or she won’t tell you that they just sold a similar product to Johnny X down the street. Also, don’t bad mouth anyone; yet don’t hesitate to blow the whistle on wrongdoing. Excellent work – professional people take pride in their work. They regard work as more than merely a means to make money and try always to deliver to the best of their ability. Focus on work – a professional takes breaks and socialises but does not waste time or focus by gossiping and complaining aimlessly. If unhappy with something, a professional takes steps to fix a ‘problem’. Willingness to learn - professional people keep up to date in their field and invest time and money in training, researching and testing information from unreliable sources. Moving up, not down – a professional doesn’t deviate from a level of performance and behaviour. He or she will try and meet the company’s expectations of them as well as their expectations of themselves. Being authentic – a professional is true to him- or herself; does not pretend to be someone else. Professional people are honest and have personal integrity. Boston City Campus & Business College offers over 80 dynamic career qualifications throughout 48 branches nationwide. Unisa degrees and media studies are available at selected branches. Talent unearthed among young artists in Motherwell NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay townships have over the years become renowned for producing great national and international stars in the performance of dance, theatre and music. The great theatre and movie actors and directors John Kani, Winston Ntshona and Nomhle Nkonyeni come from New

Brighton township and it is in that spirit that Isiseko Seenkonjane/Swallows Foundation SA (ISSA) is launching Elok’shini Arts Programme to unearth future stars by charging the creative spirits in the youth of Elokishini in Motherwell as a pilot project. “ISSA is a non-profit public benefit organisation which derives its strength from preserving, promoting and developing arts and culture in the country through exchange programmes,

teaching and training, commissions, exhibitions, productions and festivals,” said ISSA Co-director of the Programme, Oyama Vanto. Elok’shini Arts Programme will be held from November 28 to December 9 at the Raymond Mhlaba Sports Centre in Motherwell where different art forms, music genres and dance will be on offer. “It will be a mixture of sharing exercises, participatory workshops and presentations

culminating in a spectacular day-time processional theatre piece, concert and dance,” said Vanto. Vanto said the project will also look for participants to take part in the Winter School Project in Graaff Reinet next year. The winter school will select 10 young performers who will represent the Eastern Cape in 10 days of intensive drama training workshops with an equal number of artists from the UK.

SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay weekend of fun NCEBA DLADLA THIS past week will be remembered for bringing good news for the regional Safa Nelson Mandela Bay and also for awarding administrators, players and teams that excelled in the past season. After years of trying and failing to acquire sponsorship to assist in the development of football at grassroots level, the current Safa NMB executive announced a R150 000 three-year deal with Fain Apparel and Leisure wear. Announcing the technical sponsorship package that is far beyond the money mentioned, Fain’s Managing Director Ismail “Miley” Ajam, a former professional footballer, said he was happy his company will be associated with the regional Safa after having played a huge developmental role to a number of teams and local football associations in Mandela Bay. The label Fain was established by Ajam in 1986. It has been clothing national football teams like Burundi and Trinidad and Tobago as well PSL teams like Bloemfontein Celtic. National First Division teams include Carara Kicks while Rugby and Cricket teams have also been sponsored by Fain including the Warriors Cricket team.

SELBY MADIKANE THE highriding Ghetto Eleven proved beyond the shadow of a doubt they are a force to be reckoned with. ZAFA Premier League results: Leeds United 1-4 Zamazama; Santo 2-0 Seven United; Happy Stars 0-5 Brazil Brothers; Golden Brothers 2-2 BUBS; Power Lads 0-1 United Comrades; Dynamos 1-2 Eleven Angels; Peace Lovers 0-4 Young Neighbours. ZAFA First Division League results: For Pirates w/o-0 Moonlight City; Ghetto Eleven 0-5 PE Demonstrators; Eleven Master 1-4 NUBS.

Fans were kept on their feet as both outfits played exceptional football. Professionals’ goals came courtesy of strikers Zukile Mazula and Thembinkosi Tom. United could blame their strikers, who were innocuous in front of Youngers’ goalkeeper. In another exhilarating match, Real Aces shared the spoils 1-1 with Morning Stars at the Motherwell NU9 Stadium. Mvuzo Mashicila scored Aces’ goal while Khanyisa Hentsa replied for the Stars. In a real goal thriller, Tomorrow Stars were held to a 5-5 draw by Emperors while Aspen played their hearts out, despite a 3-1 loss to Showville at the NU2 Stadium. Royal Buccaneers drew 1-1 with Highland Spurs.

Bay Stars Football Club lead the log NCEBA DLADLA WINNING is sweet and as long as the Nelson Mandela Bay Vodacom league outfit, Bay Stars FC, which aspires to play against the bigger boys in an elite professional football league in three years, continues to win their matches, they will keep this dream alive. Unbeaten after six matches,

Bay Stars FC are the current log leaders after a goalless draw with the determined FC Tornado at the Gelvandale grounds at the weekend. Staying on top is exactly what Bay United FC Managing Director Tony Lovegrove wants for the club that was launched only two months ago, on September 26. “To top the log is a great achievement since most of these teams have three or more years’ experience in the Vodacom League. We are also the only un-

beaten team after six hard-fought matches,” said an overjoyed Lovegrove. Bay Stars’ next match is against Champions FC at the New Rest stadium at 3pm this Saturday (November 26). Meanwhile, the club has announced that Bay Stars have launched a new website to enable their supporters to interact with the club and be up-to-date with the new developments. “Potential supporters will have

The waterlogged pitch made play near impossible. Prior to the postponement, some matches were played, however. Reigning champions Young Romans worked hard for their 3 points when they narrowly beat Little Birds 3-2 while rookies Soweto Angels got the better of their neighbours, Strikers United 1-0. Major Chiefs earned a hard fought triumph of 3-2 over Young Stars.
