NU29 residents live in fear after riots NCEBA DLADLA

T

HE remains of two shacks of ANC members burnt to the ground in Mpangele and Savu Streets on Monday, were yesterday physical evidence of the destruction caused by the political infighting that is currently ravaging the community of NU29 in Motherwell. Less evident, but just as palpable, is the fear among residents about what is happening in their neighbourhood. When PE Express Indaba visited the area yesterday, residents, both young and old, were mum about the turn of events. They did not even want to identify themselves for fear of victimisation. “I was not there. I can’t tell you what I heard as I don’t know what the truth is,” said one resident. On being asked who knew the truth, another person said “Don’t ask me. Go that way and ask anyone in that direction.” He pointed towards NU 11 where residents are said to be mostly supporters of Nceba Faku. They would not even mention the names of the residents whose houses were burnt to ashes. Someone, however, hinted that there was going to be a residents’ meeting in the area last night to discuss the way forward. Yesterday afternoon pandemonium again broke loose in Mpangele and Savu Streets when a woman, in her early 50s (who refused to identify herself or have her photo taken) started blowing a whistle calling members of the community for help as “these people (the rioters) are beating our

children as they are coming from school.” Motherwell police, meanwhile, were not available to confirm or deny allegations yesterday that the rioters

burnt to the ground, told Die Burger newspaper that the group of people who allegedly burnt her house down told her that she was a “Faku dog”. “They accused me of being a sup-

of where we will live,” said Mbono. According to her it is also not true that she is part of a group op people who do not want other people to have houses. Some of the residents in the

were also targeting and assaulting Motherwell NU29 school children who attend school in other areas. Nomzi Mbono, one of the residents, whose shack in Mpangele Street was

porter of Nceba Faku (regional chairman of the ANC). But I am only a normal ANC member “I really feel sad. I don’t even know where my children will be safe now

area believe the houses were burnt down because residents are unhappy about the way in which houses are allocated. Mbono questioned this, asking: “How

can this be when I myself have been living in a shack for 20 years already?” In addition to the houses which were torn and burnt down, a woman, who defended herself against the rioters, was also assaulted. “Some of the people told her to go away, and when she refused, they started hitting and assaulting her,” a resident told Die Burger. Police spokesperson WO Dumile Gwavu said the woman was taken by ambulance to hospital. By late on Monday, nine people were arrested. The police are investigating charges of assault with aggravating circumstances, malicious damage to property and arson. Zanoxolo Wayile, executive mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay metro, with whom Faku is in a political struggle, said he deplored any form of violence and destruction of property. “We cannot allow a situation where people live in fear.” In a statement yesterday, the ANC in the Eastern Cape condemned “the violent eviction that took place in Motherwell”. Oscar Mabuyane, ANC Eastern Cape Provincial Secretary, said that “as an organisation, we want to state it categorically that such act can never be associated with the ANC and its membership as our leading agenda in the society is to unite the society, promote peace and security. “Such acts have criminal elements and the law enforcement agencies should take their course. It is, however, mischievous to make people believe that the Motherwell saga is linked to the ANC provincial leadership interaction that seeks to maintain stability between the Municipal leadership and the ANC leadership in the Region,” he said.
