NU29 residents live in fear after riots NCEBA DLADLA
T
HE remains of two shacks of ANC members burnt to the ground in Mpangele and Savu Streets on Monday, were yesterday physical evidence of the destruction caused by the political infighting that is currently ravaging the community of NU29 in Motherwell. Less evident, but just as palpable, is the fear among residents about what is happening in their neighbourhood. When PE Express Indaba visited the area yesterday, residents, both young and old, were mum about the turn of events. They did not even want to identify themselves for fear of victimisation. “I was not there. I can’t tell you what I heard as I don’t know what the truth is,” said one resident. On being asked who knew the truth, another person said “Don’t ask me. Go that way and ask anyone in that direction.” He pointed towards NU 11 where residents are said to be mostly supporters of Nceba Faku. They would not even mention the names of the residents whose houses were burnt to ashes. Someone, however, hinted that there was going to be a residents’ meeting in the area last night to discuss the way forward. Yesterday afternoon pandemonium again broke loose in Mpangele and Savu Streets when a woman, in her early 50s (who refused to identify herself or have her photo taken) started blowing a whistle calling members of the community for help as “these people (the rioters) are beating our
children as they are coming from school.” Motherwell police, meanwhile, were not available to confirm or deny allegations yesterday that the rioters
burnt to the ground, told Die Burger newspaper that the group of people who allegedly burnt her house down told her that she was a “Faku dog”. “They accused me of being a sup-
of where we will live,” said Mbono. According to her it is also not true that she is part of a group op people who do not want other people to have houses. Some of the residents in the

were also targeting and assaulting Motherwell NU29 school children who attend school in other areas. Nomzi Mbono, one of the residents, whose shack in Mpangele Street was
porter of Nceba Faku (regional chairman of the ANC). But I am only a normal ANC member “I really feel sad. I don’t even know where my children will be safe now
area believe the houses were burnt down because residents are unhappy about the way in which houses are allocated. Mbono questioned this, asking: “How
can this be when I myself have been living in a shack for 20 years already?” In addition to the houses which were torn and burnt down, a woman, who defended herself against the rioters, was also assaulted. “Some of the people told her to go away, and when she refused, they started hitting and assaulting her,” a resident told Die Burger. Police spokesperson WO Dumile Gwavu said the woman was taken by ambulance to hospital. By late on Monday, nine people were arrested. The police are investigating charges of assault with aggravating circumstances, malicious damage to property and arson. Zanoxolo Wayile, executive mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay metro, with whom Faku is in a political struggle, said he deplored any form of violence and destruction of property. “We cannot allow a situation where people live in fear.” In a statement yesterday, the ANC in the Eastern Cape condemned “the violent eviction that took place in Motherwell”. Oscar Mabuyane, ANC Eastern Cape Provincial Secretary, said that “as an organisation, we want to state it categorically that such act can never be associated with the ANC and its membership as our leading agenda in the society is to unite the society, promote peace and security. “Such acts have criminal elements and the law enforcement agencies should take their course. It is, however, mischievous to make people believe that the Motherwell saga is linked to the ANC provincial leadership interaction that seeks to maintain stability between the Municipal leadership and the ANC leadership in the Region,” he said.

Local e-commerce fashion success expands into Africa BETTIE GILIOMEE TWO local entreprenteurs who have built a leading women’s fashion e-commerce company, Millbug.com, from their Port Elizabeth base, are now expanding into Africa. “There’s absolutely no doubt that Africa is the place to be in the next 50 years,” said Millbug’s Managing Director, Sabelo Sibanda. “We are very fortunate to have unique insights into the African youth consumer market. In five years we will be the biggest e-commerce retailer on the continent. Five years after that, we will be the biggest m-commerce (mobile commerce) retailer in the world,” said Sibanda. The company, which prides itself on providing elegant and edgy fashion for millennials, was started by friends and business partners Sabelo Sibanda and Thulisile Volwana in April this year. Sibanda is an Old Grey Boy and Volwana is from Ngcobo and went to
Nyanga High School. According to Sibanda, “millennials” are not just a demographic i.e. people born in the late 70s to the early 2000s but more a way of thinking. “Millennials embrace self expression, radical creativity and connectivity. Digitally inclined yet tactile, the millennial understands the importance of connectivity,” said Sibanda. “Terms such as Corporate Social Investment (CSI) are not just ‘the right thing to do’ but are an expected standard for this generation. We have built a solid community around our motto, ‘Only The Unique Belong”, a rallyingcry for individualism and freedom of expression,” said Sibanda. They currently get their products from the East but are in talks with designers all over the continent in order to stock their items. “We get customers from all over the world and would like to promote the best local designers on our platform. We sell women’s fashion and accessories, specifically for millennials as we can relate since we are in that age demographic. “Men’s attire will be available short-
ly. We hand pick every item. If it’s something that we would not wear ourselves, we don’t stock it. We strongly believe that this honesty allows us to connect more effectively with our customers,” said Sibanda. According to Sibanda, people make use of their site because it is secure, they have live chat support, a transparent returns and exchanges policy and multiple payment gateways. “And most importantly, we offer the best mobile commerce (m-commerce) solution on the continent. Your experience on our website is the same whether you access it via your computer, tablet or mobile phone. We treat our customers like the super awesome millennials they are and get our biggest kicks from making people happy,” said Sibanda. For more info visit www.millbug.com. Umzi Wethu Hospitality Academy students learn from best NCEBA DLADLA TWO Umzi Wethu Hospitality Academy students Lebogang Gontsana and Noluthando Masimini received a world-class work-shadow experience at the top restaurants in the city, thanks to the relationship this institution has with the Port Elizabeth Hotel Group. In line with the Umzi Wethu model of social intervention projects aimed at empowering vulnerable youth through works-skills and and lifeskills training, the duo received two-weeks on-the-job training under the mentorship of top chefs, John Hodder from Ginger Restaurant and Mario Paul from the Beach Hotel’s Crest Restaurant kitchens. “We have been looking for ways to help improve our students’ experiences throughout their year of training at the academy,” said Wilderness Foundation’s Director of Social Programmes, Pinky Kondlo. According to Kondlo, the two students came back with much greater understanding of opportunities available in the hospitality industry. “They have been inspired by what they have seen, and what they can achieve if they work hard,” said Kondlo. Although the presence of inexperienced students in a busy kitchen
might be frustrating to some chefs, Michelin Star Chef Hodder who took the youngsters under his wings was never perturbed. “I am not territorial about my kitchen. I believe that you need to share what you love . . . I believe in training and building the skills of all of my staff and I have been very happy to see that during quiet times, my staff have voluntarily shared their knowledge with the students,’ said Hodder proudly. Ginger Restaurant General Manager Tracey Rivington also said that it had been an absolute pleasure to host the students, adding that they have encouraged the duo to take pride in their work, to be enthusiastic and have a desire to make every guest engagement a positive one. “When I told my friends that I wanted to work in the Hospitality Industry, they laughed and said cooking is women’s work! But, an Umzi Wethu graduate I knew encouraged me to follow my dream. I am happy that I did,” said Gontsana. He added that he had learned about professionalism and to deal with pressure. Viwe Nciya – all members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. They started singing together in June 1995 in Berlin near East London when they decided on the spur of the moment to perform musical items during the church programme. “This was the beginning of four parts harmony that has continued to bless audiences with beautiful music,’ said Dlavana proudly. He added that they have since recorded two albums, Khangelani (a collection of songs they used to sing during their school days) and Glory Road which has clearly defined their sound and gave them direction. Currently the group is busy doing final touch-ups on a live DVD which they recorded at the Orient Theatre in East London. The concert starts at 6 pm. Admission is R100 at the door.

Young bright learners honoured with awards at Walmer High NCEBA DLADLA WALMER High School held an awards ceremony last Wednesday to honour their bright young pupils who excelled in their studies and in extra-mural activities in the first term of the school calendar year. The Inaugural Young Bright Minds Award Ceremony, brought to life in the midst of poor performance in Eastern Cape schools with many challenges facing education, is aimed at encouraging learners to believe in themselves, find a purpose in life, to dream and know that there is a seed of greatness in each and everyone of them. The event was organised and sponsored by former pupils of the school who graduated and who have excelled in their careers. It was attended by staff, pupils, members of the School Governing Body, parents, Rev. Zolile Dayimani and other invited guests. In their full academic regalia, the former students praised the role played by the school principal, Lunga Dyani, in helping learners from this poverty-stricken area realise their full potential to achieve their dreams. Among them was Sandiso Ntsomi, a Chartered Accountant, and Khaya Dyala, who has only one set of examinations left to write to become a chartered accountant as well. Also among the former learners
are some who are holding senior positions in government and in economic management and finance in parastatals like Telkom. “We decided in 2010 to do this. We felt it was time we gave back to the school by encouraging the students to work hard and learn to appreciate and love education,” said Nomarwayi. “Through commitment and dedication, anything is possible, irrespective of one’s background,” said Sindiswa Speelman. Keynote speaker Ntombebhonga Nomarwayi urged the learners to start dreaming and work hard to realise their dreams. Ntsomi said the bus, that is aimed at bringing a positive change in Walmer, is moving. “We need more passengers in this bus. But if it leaves you standing, don’t worry, there is another bus. Make sure, you get into that bus, otherwise, you’ll be left in the lurch,” said Ntsomi. Top learners in all Learning Areas from Grade 8 to 10 were awarded certificates. Samkelo Phillip (Grade 8), Ndileka Zothe (Grade 9) and Sibonise Gqibithole (Grade 11) were outstanding learners who got themselves certificates, trophies and a R500 book or stationery voucher for getting more than 80% in more than three learning areas. “In this school we believe that you reap what you sow,” said Dyani.

Local boxers must fight to bring SA crown to Nelson Mandela Bay NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay boxers who are rated in South Africa carry the hopes of bringing a South African title to these shores. It is a long time since the metro won a South African boxing championship when the late Mbulelo Nyanda beat Phathutshedzo Nemukongwe to win the SA Junior Flyweight title in Durban on 15 August 2003. He lost the title in his first defence against Vuyani Keswa in Witbank, Limpopo on 13 December of the same year. Before Nyanda, it was the late Sandile Mantile who brought the SA Bantamweight title home when he beat East London’s Patrick Quka in February 1999. But the area, which is the home of former greats like Christopher “Chris Kid” Dlamini, Phindile “Slow Poison” Gaika, Vuyani “Wonder Boy” Nene, Mzukisi “Laciar” Sikali, Phumzile “Sweet Boy” Madikane and Linda “Black Mamba” Nondzaba, is still im-
bued with great talent. Writing on the Boxing South Africa (BSA) website on “How we rate our boxers”, Director of Operations Loyiso Mtya said “Boxers are rated in terms of their activity, records, quality of opposition, and their potential.” And indeed there is a lot of potential in our rated boxers such as Sithembele August, (9, heavyweight), Unathi Jacobs (4, middleweight), Leon Mriba (6, middleweight), Tapelo Potwana (6, junior welterweight), Simo Mbande and Lusindiso Siyo (8 and 9 respectively in the Bantamweight) and Xolani Mpushe (7, flyweight division). Although he comes from eRhini in the Makana Local Municipality, the list can also include Mziwoxolo Ndwayana who is rated number 7 in the welterweight division, as Ndwayana’s career is boosted here in Nelson Mandela Bay where he has many of his fights. “We depend on these boxers to end the drought,” said Mandela Bay BSA Service Provider Mthunzi Mapitiza.

In its third year running, this grassroots programme gets about 6 000 boys and girls in Gauteng, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Free State and KZN to compete in Street Soccer - for play and enjoyment. Youth sports development agency Sporting Chance conceptualised and coordinated the programme to encourage the youth of South Africa to take part in competitive football to earn a decent living from it. The youth are also encouraged to play together and make lasting friendships as members of the communities. “It is, however, not only about playing. If kids like Manqaba, who plays for City Strikers FC, do not make it on the field of play, at least, there is hope that through the learning and teaching in the programme, a responsible and good citizenry will still emerge, and South African will become the winner.
