‘Indaba’ now weekly
7
GOOD news for the residents of the townships in the Metro is the expansion of the Port Elizabeth Express Indaba newspaper from a monthly publication to a weekly newspaper. The Indaba was first launched in July 2008 as a monthly newspaper. It was a brand extension to Port Elizabeth Express serving a market where there had been no other freesheet at the time. “The Indaba has proved so popular amongst readers and advertisers alike that we have decided to relaunch it as a weekly paper,” said editor, Bettie Giliomee.
Mandela Bay shines for Mandela Day
Indaba will now be published on a Wednesday. The distribution has also been increased and a total of 55 000 copies will be printed. The newspaper will be distributed to homes in KwaNobuhle, Khayalistha, Motherwell, Bethelsdorp, Kwadwesi, KwaZakhele, New Brighton, Soweto On Sea, Veeplaas, Zwide and Gqebera. Commuters will be able to get the Indaba at selected taxi ranks in these areas. “As is the case with the PE Express’ three zoned editions - Metro, Southern Suburbs and Northern Suburbs – the Indaba will focus on
news and people that matter in the community in which the paper is distributed,” said Giliomee. “Not only will municipal and crime news be covered, but the Indaba will give people and organisations, who make a difference in the community, a platform. “Regular columns will also focus on topics ranging from health to wealth.” Apart from the news value for readers, the Indaba is also the ideal vehicle for advertisers to reach their target market in their surrounding community. According to Tasmia Ismail, PE
Express Indaba Advertising Manager, “After the launch of Indaba advertisers grabbed the opportunity to offer their products and services to this very rapidly emerging market. “Most local advertisers who identified this as their target markets waste no time in securing their advertising space well in advance. Even national advertisers such as Cashbuild and Metro Cash & Carry have finally found the perfect vehicle for their audiences,” said Ismail. Port Elizabeth Express Indaba is published by Media24 Newspapers, printed by Paarl Coldset and distributed by On The Dot Distribution.

Joy and relief as water restrictions lifted CLARISSA VENTER THE announcement that Nelson Mandela Bay’s water restrictions and punitive tariffs were to be eased, was met with great jubilation amongst businesses and residents. The news followed last week after a drought that left everyone in the metro in a frenzied panic state. However, the executive mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Zanoxolo Wayile, has lifted the water restrictions imposed on account holders since water supply decreased below 60 % two years ago. At a certain stage in 2010 levels in the city
threatened to drop below 30 % because consumption remained high in the midst of the drought. Furthermore, Wayile said while the water tariffs will be lifted on August 1 the decreased water usage restrictions will be put into effect Monday, July 25. A notice last week from the Department of Water Affairs advising the municipality that restrictions on its intake from the major supply dams had been revised, saw to it that the restrictions, are for now a thing of the past. Although the restrictions have been lifted, the municipality is still urging residents to continue to use water sparingly given a projected “dry season”.
kwibala lezemidlalo eKleinskool nalapho uncedo ngezempilo luzakuba lufumaneka khona kubahlali ukusuka ngowe 23 ukuya kowama 31 kuJulayi. “Baza kuqhuba unonelelo lwamazinyo lokuqala, ucoceko kananjalo nokukhutshwa kwamazinyo, banikezele ngeendlela zokujongwa kwempilo okuphambili kubantwana nabadala baze banikezele noncedo lovavanyo lwamehlo nokunikezelwa kweentanyongo,”utshilo okaTheunissen. Kuza kubakho oogqirha bezilwanyana macala omabini nabaza kusebenza ngokubambisana ne-SPCA ukunika iinkonzo kubahlali bakwaNobuhle nase-Allerinridge ukunceda imfuyo yasekhaya nezilwanyana. Nako oku kuza kuba ngomhla we-23 kuJulayi ukuya kowama 31. I-Exercise Shared Accord le, lubambiswano lwarhoqo ngonyaka phakathi kwala mazwe mabini. Kunyaka ophelileyo oku kuqhutywe nelizwe laseMozambique.
New minimum rates for Hospitality Industry AS from July 1, the minimum wage rates in the hospitality sector have been increased by 5.2%. The new rates are now as follows: Employers with 10 or fewer employees Monthly rate: R2 094.52; weekly rate: R481.10; Hourly rate: R10.70 Employers with more than 10 employees Monthly rate: R2 323.97; weekly rate: R536.34; hourly rate: R11.92 These increases are only on minimum wage rates.
Provincial Water Affairs acting chief director Ashley Starkey, confirmed earlier that the lifting of the restrictions was recently published in the weekly government Gazette after the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Edna Molewa, signed it. Hereafter, the metro could only announce the tariff ease after the Gazette was published. Moreover, the municipality advised that certain activities remain prohibited and is still encouraging the usage of recycled water at car washes. Meanwhile, the municipality has maintained a 98 % water quality compliance which means it complies fully with SANS 241 (Drinking Water Quality Standards).

Sibongile wins SA Award
SELBY MADIKANE
MOTHERWELL Build It owner Sibongile Nkebe won the Future 100 South Africa’s Top Young Entrepreneur Silver Award at a function held at the Gallagher Estate in Jozi recently. The function according to Nkebe, was the brainchild of the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) to ensure efficient running of businesses by young people. Nkebe revealed that the areas of concern among other issues, were business profiling on financials, community involvement and achievements. According to Nkebe, 5 800 young entrepreneurs countrywide were nominated and that number was later trimmed down to 200 by the independent adjudi-
cators. “Everything was conducted professionally in a free and fair manner by the independent panel of judges and when my name was called for a Silver Award, amongst 100 young best entrepreneurs I was overwhelmed,” said a still overjoyed Nkebe. Nkebe attributed his achievement to his personnel, the community that supports them “and of course my family for they always support me” he said. Said Nkebe: “I want to say thank you to all of you. thank you. This award means a lot to me,” he said. Nkebe is not new to winning awards. In 2009 he won the Build It national award and was awarded the certificate of community involvement and development by Imbasa primary school in 2010.
BenMazwi opens Re/Max branch in Motherwell RE/MAX ABM, which operates in the New Brighton and surrounding areas of Port Elizabeth, has achieved record sales and opened a new office in Motherwell during the past month. RE/MAX ABM increased its sales from between 10 and 20 per month to 31 sales recorded for May and a further 26 for June. Well-known local businessman and broker/owner of RE/MAX ABM, Andile Ben-Mazwi, attributes this growth to an increased marketing budget and more aggressive marketing of the brand and its stock. Adrian Goslett, CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa, says that these figures prove that there is demand for property and that the market is showing strong signs of recovery, particularly in the lower and middle price ranges. Ben-Mazwi explains that the new Motherwell office, which began trad-

ing on 1 July, was established due to the fact that they sell more properties in this area than any other area of their operation. “People in this area prefer personal consultation when doing business and therefore bringing our business closer to them will enable us to increase our market share.” Ben-Mazwi says that his office brings 23 years worth of knowledge and expertise in property to the area, which has been passed on to the RE/ MAX ABM sales associates through training, to render an unsurpassed service to meet the client’s needs. Goslett adds that in the current economic climate, well-trained, knowledgeable and compliant agents make all the difference when it comes to concluding property transactions. Ben-Mazwi explains that in order to service the Motherwell area, his office has taken on a further six agents and on 9 July the office hosted
a road show in the area to introduce the new agents to the community with fliers. “We also talked to the community about our initiative with the objective of making it easy for them to transact at their door steps.” Ben-Mazwi also notes that Motherwell is the most vibrant area in their target markets and says that RE/ MAX ABM has more listings in this area than anywhere else. Free-standing homes, he says, are the most popular choice, with prices ranging from R70 000 to R550 000. “Most of the properties on the market sell for an average price of R200 000 and the buyers are mostly young couples.” Looking forward, Ben-Mazwi predicts steady growth for property in these markets. “The sales in the area are being matched by the number of listings which we conclude at almost the same rate we conclude sales. This assures us of sustainable growth in the area,” he concludes.

Black diamonds shine on Mandela Day Executive Mayor Zan oxolo Wayile also did his bit for Mandela Day. Photo: Supplied
THE Black Diamonds Consulting, a company owned 100% by historically disadvantaged individuals and who are all women, rolled up their sleeves to do their bit for 67 minutes for Mandela Day. They served about 1000 scrumptous meals to the needy from their offices in Aggrey Street, New Brighton. “Our events company is happy to be serving the needy a hot meal on this important day. We’d like to con-
tinue with this community service, even if it’s on a monthly basis as our commitment to the needy members of our communities in the spirit of Madiba,” said company director Vuvu Sitho-Headbush. “In fact, our drive is to empower others, especially women, as Nelson Mandela stands for equal rights, unity and social justice,” added Bongiwe Mafani, another company director of The Black Diamonds.

Department of Arts and Culture encourages culture of reading least 67 minutes of their time to help others in need - whereever they are. The theme of this year’s Mandela Day was “Working Together to build a caring society.” “Mandela dedicated 67 years of his life to political activism and Mandela Day is a celebration of Mandela’s life and a global call for people everywhere to take responsibility for making the world a better place,” said DAC Communications Head, Lisa Combrinck ,recently.
NCEBA DLADLA THE Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) spearheaded a month-long programme to celebrate Mandela Day by giving out books to encourage the culture of reading in the country. Since the United Nations declared July 18 as the International Mandela Day last year, South Africans and members of the international community have been urged to use at
Combrink said her department was involved in a series of events to celebrate Mandela’ legacy. They started early this month in Grahamstown in the Makana Local Municipality where they handed out thousands of books - about 67 titles to seven under-resourced libaries with the help of companies in the publishing sector to promote literacy and encourage the culture of reading. This was because Mandela, who is
the author of two of the titles they handed out - Long Walk to Freedom (1994) and Conversations with Myself (2010), is very passionate about reading. Mandela was once quoted as saying “Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mine-worker can become the head of the mine, that a child of farm workers can become the president of
a great nation.” DAC Books and Publishing head Siphiwo Mahala said it was high time that South Africans should make everyday a Mandela Day. People should look around them to see what it is that they can do to make the difference in the life of the other person. “We (DAC) also took time to paint, clean and beautify the homes of elderly people in the areas we visited nationally,” said Mahala.

Renovations, new classrooms for kwaZakhele schools EXPRESS INDABA REPORTER SCHOOLS in KwaZakhele will receive upgrades worth thousands of rands thanks to their learners entering the Cashbuild Art-atHeart competition. B.J. Mnyanda Primary School will have a new Grade R classroom and Ebangweni Primary School will at last be able to partition its hall into classrooms. These additions will all be made possible thanks to the schools’ entry into the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition. Altogether, eight lucky schools received Cashbuild building material vouchers worth R12 000 when the Cashbuild Daku store officially opened its doors on June 22. Principal of B.J. Mnyanda Primary School, Patricia Xaluva, explained: “We currently have 101 learners in our Grade R classroom; this puts both our learners and teachers under great stress. That’s why we plan to build the extra classroom because this will alleviate the problem as well as serve as an additional classroom for the other grades to use. Thank you so much Cashbuild, we are so grateful for this!” Thandaza Koya, Principal of Ebangweni Primary School said: “We lack classrooms so we decided that partitioning our school hall into two or more classrooms with galvanized roller doors would be an ideal solution. We also plan on purchasing various other building materials in order to improve our school’s ap-
pearance. This voucher could not have come at a better time. We are really thankful to Cashbuild.” At the official Cashbuild store opening on June 22, when the vouchers totaling R96 000 were presented to all eight schools, the children showed their appreciation by entertaining everyone with singing, cultural dances and theatrical performances. The Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition entails learners from each school submitting their best artwork to Cashbuild. This artwork is displayed at the ceremony, and then remains on display in the Cashbuild store for the next five years. Artwork was judged and three winners from each school were named. The winning children received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place respectively. The Manager’s Choice award was also presented to the lucky winner of the artwork competition. This award was presented to Bobi Xolani from Charles Duna Primary School who received a stationery pack and a glass trophy. At the store opening event, Samuel Nongogo Primary School was the winner of the lucky draw and walked away with a solar geyser and free installation. This prize will ensure that they have hot water regardless of the lack of resources within their community. The schools that benefited from the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart donations and the children that received
the certificates are: Charles Duna Primary School Gold Award - Kwanela Kapu Silver Award - Mlamli Ndlondlo Bronze Award - Siphosethu Tanya

Woolworths teaches learners healthy living NCEBA DLADLA A PROGRAMME run by Woolworths aimed at encouraging healthier lifestyles among young children, was recently introduced at local schools. The innovative Woolworths Primary Education Programme has broken ground with three entertaining educational lessons presented by
professional actors using movement, rhyme, story-telling, games and group participation to creatively convey key info about healthy choices and sustainable living. A total of 63 Grade 4 learners from Kaizer Ngxwana Primary School in Kwazakhele recently experienced first-hand this action-packed “Healthy-living is fun” Lesson which taught them the basics of a balanced
meal while keeping them moving their bodies for 30 minutes. “The importance of physical activity and making healthy eating choices was emphasised through the use of movement and rhyme,” said Account Manager, Elearnor Williams. “The idea of highly interactive and entertaining class lessons is to provide a new platform for teaching and learning about healthy, sustainable
living,” added Woolworths Educational Programmes Manager, Pieter Twine. Rising levels of child obesity and physically inactive lifestyle is a major problem in South Africa today. There is also a need to help teachers and schools to empower learners to take charge of their own well-being and to care for their environment in a fun-filled way, said Twine.
Other lessons available to schools are “The Big Stomp - Our Ecological Footprint’s lesson” in which children join in the “Big Stomp Rap” and play the “Earth Safety Game”. “The Great Food Mystery” lesson addresses the present day lack of understanding of where food comes from, and introduces a story-telling Truth Detective who needs the learners’ help.

Dynamos beat Santos in finals SELBY MADIKANE FOLLOWING a long silverware drought Dynamos FC ultimately clinched the Zakhele Football Association (Zafa) Knock Out Trophy when they deservedly edged out Santos FC 2-0 in the finals played at the Woolfson Stadium on July 3. Dynamos, in fact, showed no respect to Zafa’s once-famous team right from the first whistle. Dynamos midfielder Phumlani “Bump-dance” Mnabisa scored the first goal at the half-way mark of the first stanza. Although Santos’ maestro Xolisa
“Shoes” Pohlwana was tightly marked, he did not give up the fight. Phakamisa Batyi too threw everything he had but it was not to be as Dynamos’ defence was tenacious. Early in the second stanza of the game Santos were awarded a penalty kick which goal-keeper Lwandiso Gubayo missed due to brilliant fielding by his counterpart Vuyani Mdayi. Dynamos lanky striker Dinilesizwe Mdabe put the nail into Santos’ coffin in the dying moments of the game when he scored a brilliant goal. Dynamos’ Zwelethu Gcakasi deserve a special mention for a brilliant performance throughout the game.

Get ready for the Clover Milk Run DUST off those running shoes and get ready for the 13th annual Clover 10 km Milk Run and 5 km Road Race on July 30. To add even more excitement to the event for average runners, two runners will each win R2500 if they cross the finish line at average times that were chosen for the 10km and 5km events. The runners closest to these times will receive the money. The average times were drawn by James Rea, local branch manager for Clover, and handed over to the organisers Port Elizabeth Amateur Athletic Club (PEAAC) in sealed envelopes at the media launch of the run two weeks ago. One of the most important aspects of the 10 km race is that it is a Participation and Prestige League event, and remains the

A total of R32 000 prize money is up for grabs. The first 1 000 people to collect their numbers on Friday, July 29 will each receive a litre of Clover Milk, and every finisher will receive a litre of milk as well as an Aquartz water. Spar NMMU netballers crack national nod

IN an unprecedented move, half of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s netball team have been named in the South African student squad. The six Spar-NMMU players were selected on the basis of their individual performances at the University Sport South Africa (USSA) tournament, which took place at North-West University’s Potchefstroom campus earlier this month. The team placed fourth overall. “It’s obviously a very big honour and a first for the university,” said NMMU sports manager, Theresa le Roux. According to her, they caught the eye of the selectors with strong performances throughout the week. Captain and wing defence, Janine Daniell; goal keeper, Nontle Gwavu; centre, Mampho Tsotetsi and goal shooter, Dumisane Chauke, all former members of the national squad, once again cracked the nod. They are joined by new inclusions Zanele Vimbela and Elzaan Lotter in goal defence and goal attack respectively. “We’re very pleased to see rising stars like Zanele and Elzaan being recognised for their talent and dedication,” said Le Roux. Members of the 30-strong national squad will vie for a place in the 12-person team to compete at the World University Netball Championships, which take place in Cape Town in July next year.
Lotto ASA 21,1Km winners are from left, Rene Kalmer and Steven Mokoku.
“It will give the girls great international exposure and the opportunity to see some of the world’s best student netball players in action, many of whom represented their countries at the elite World Cup in Singapore recently,” said Le Roux. “Unfortunately, Nontle and Mampho will not be eligible as they turn 27 before the world champs.” However, said Le Roux, they would still be in contention for a spot at the Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games in Botswana next April. She attributed the club’s success to hard work under the guidance of former national player and head coach Lana Krige. “Lana and Maryka (Allaway) put in many long hours coaching the girls. They were certainly the fittest team we’ve ever taken to the tournament.” Five of the six players are also members of the Eastern Province team, the Ibhayi Gales, which competes in the national Netball Grand Series, while Gwavu represents her home province of Gauteng. They will all play a critical role when the Spar-NMMU team mounts its title defence in the EP A League at the Young Park courts in Port Elizabeth starting later this month. The team will be aiming to continue its dominance with a seventh consecutive series win.

Crystal Palace wins Playoffs

SOUTH African Football Association Nelson Mandela Bay (SAFA NMB) hosted its annual regional promotional play-offs at Walmer Township last month. The play-offs were won by Crystal Palace. Fans wanted to see who would come out victorious to play in the SAFA NMB top-flight football next season as all its 10 Local Football Associations (LFAs) were proudly represented by their league winners. In the first semi-final Crystal Palace managed to beat a gutsy Peace Lovers 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regulation time. In the sec-
ond semi-finals Red City played their hearts out to oust Airport Valley 1-0. In the finals, it was a one-sided affair as Crystal Palace thumped Red City 4-1. A visibly elated Crystal Palace manager Xolani Qwakanisa thanked his team for winning MOFA and SAFA NMB Promotional Play-offs trophies. “Despite not having funds to hire transport to play our away games, and not having proper playing fields and only one set of jerseys, the club has done well. I want to congratulate the team on a job well done,” said Qwakanisa. Any good samaritan who would like to assist the club can contact Qwakanisa at 073 914 1905.
