PE Express launches new interactive website Readers can share their news, views and events BETTIE GILIOMEE AFTER more than a year in development, Port Elizabeth Express’s brand-new website is going live today, bringing community news now to an even wider audience than our 145 000 weekly copies already reach. In addition, the new websites of PE Express sister publications, Kouga Express and UD News, will also be launched tomorrow. The websites were developed by 24.com which is part of the Media24 group, which also owns PE Express and its sister community publications. The website has been designed to be very user-friendly with a great emphasis on being interactive. To this effect the public, schools and other community groups can also share their news, views and happenings through the website. There are easy-to-find categories

for the regular news, entertainment, motoring and sport which will be updated every week when PE Express hits the streets. News that is featured in all editions of PE Express (Northern, Southern and Metro ) as well as PE Express Indaba, will be available on the website. Readers will also be able to comment on the reports. Our popular Diary/Dagboek, featuring events of non-profit community organisations such as schools, churches and support groups, will also be available on the website. In addition, the website now offers readers the opportunity to load information on their own events in the Events section of the website. It being an interactive website, readers can also upload their photos and videos. In an effort to join in the fight to keep our neighbourhoods safe, readers can also upload information on criminal activities in their areas on the website to serve as a warning to other residents.

On the Netlocal section of the website, readers can register as users of the website. One does not have to register to read the paper, but must do so to enter for competitions, give comment or to upload events. There is also a section where schools and groups can upload information on their latest happenings. Another useful feature is the weather forecast of the SA Weather Services, the contact details of emergency services, as well as the market indicators and latest Lotto results. The website also features a Local Guide, that is a comprehensive source of information on the local attractions, as well as history of the different suburbs and places in Port Elizabeth. Readers will be able to take part in regular opinion polls and the full paper will be available to page through in pdf format. The website is also designed in such a way that advertisers can use it as a vehicle to reach an even wider target audience.

No transport for Ward councillor to attend to issues CLARISSA VENTER AN ANC-councillor of Ward 60, Nondikho Gana cannot address many issues in the Swartkops suburb because she does not have any transport. Residents living in Swartkops are fedup with the way their suburb is deteriorating and the fact that their plight to upgrade their area is ignored. David Hayes, a concerned resident who has been in constant contact with both Gana and the DA public relations officer, Knight Mali, said that although they bothwere aware of all those issues, nothing had been done. He also added that Gana did not have any transport to take a look at the deteriorating issues. In response to this, Gana said that she was still waiting for Hay-

es to show her the issues that needed to be addressed. “He said he would take me there.” Gana said once she had observed the issues, she would immediately report it to the relevant municipal officers. “I will attend to these problems as soon as I can.” Mali said, however, the Metro was already aware of all Swartkops’s issues and yet they were still not doing anything about it. Some of the issues Hayes has raised in an open letter to the PE Express, include the damaged embankment of the Wylde Bridge, which is dangerous due to a huge hole in the cement and the fact that the bridge does not have all its railings. “The municipality should do something before someone falls through the hole. It is an obvious safety risk,” Hayes said. He also complained about trucks parked

on the verges of the main street which is illegal and that traffic patrols were inadequate to combat this. “Street lights are not in working order and some people even make fires all over the pavements. Slum lords have taken over and there are many houses which have been allowed to deteriorate to such an extent that they have become fire hazards.” He added that one could sympathize with the owners for not putting money into their properties, “because the street verges and pavements are so old and broken, who would want to invest?” Furthermore, he mentioned that residents constantly had to deal with burst water pipes and leaking sewer water due to improper drainage. He wrote that the grass on some open plots is knee high. “There is a pavement along Argyle Street

which is almost swallowed by grass.” The play park also requires upgrade work, according to Hayes. “The Swartkops River is used by the Port Elizabeth public in general and therefore the municipality should show the same concern as they do with the beach front,” said Hayes. Mali said he was in the process of putting all documents together so that he could raise it at the next council meeting. “Then, hopefully something will be done. But, it seems that the issue of upgrading Swartkops is a hot potato being passed around within the municipality. Until now there has been no concrete action from the ANC. And, their excuse is that there are no funds.” Kupido Baron, Metro spokesperson, said the municipality is aware of problems in the area.

In die metro se geval is daar een verkeersbeampte vir elke 16 000 voertuie op die Baaise paaie.

En totdat meer verkeersbeamptes aangestel gaan word, gaan die verhouding nie verander nie. Hamilton Totoyi, verkeershoof in die metro, het op verlede week se munisipale openbare rekeningekomiteevergadering gesê inwoners kla gedurig hulle sien nooit verkeersbeamptes op die pad nie. Volgens hom ondervind die verkeersdepartement erge personeeltekorte. Tans is daar 310 verkeersbeamptes

Leon de Villiers, DA-koukusleier in die metro, het aan Totoyi gesê sy departement is onproduktief en vaar baie swakker as alle ander verkeersdepartemente in die land. Hierop het Totoyi gesê om die metro met ander metro’s in die land te vergelyk is soos om appels en lemoene te vergelyk.

“Al die ander metro’s het ’n metropolisiemag, maar ons nie,” het hy gesê. Hy het bygevoeg die neiging om verkeersbeamptes se produktiwiteit te meet aan die aantal verkeersboetes wat hulle uitskryf en hoeveel geld daardeur ingevorder word, is verkeerd. Volgens hom is verkeersboetes nie hul belangrikste funksie nie, maar wel die beveiliging van motoriste en paaie.

The SAMO competition is hosted by the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) and sponsored by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA). “One of SAICA’s prime functions is to rapidly grow the number of the country’s prospective accountants. “By so doing we contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s economic prosperity,” said Gugu Makhanya,

project director of transformation and growth at SAICA. The SAMO is the biggest Olympiad in South Africa, with 58 422 learners from 884 schools who participated in the first round on 16 March earlier. Prof. Johann Engelbrecht, Executive Director of the SAMF, said those learners should be extremely proud of themselves as coming out tops was not an easy task. The top 100 senior learners (Gr. 10 - Gr 12) in the second round qualify to write the third round and the top ten juniors (Gr. 8 and Gr. 9) countrywide will also be invited to participate.

Framesby wen sesaan’nkant krieket DIE Hoërskool Framesby het met die louere by die Hoër Landbouskool Marlow in Cradock se o.15 ses-aan-’n-kant kriekettoernooi, wat van 16 en 17 September plaasgevind het, weggestap. Die toernooi is in sy vierde jaar, maar vanjaar was egter die eerste keer dat die toernooi oor twee dae aangebied is. Tien skole het aan die toernooi deelgeneem, naamlik die Hoërskole Framesby, Pearson, Cradock, Hangklip, Aliwal Noord, Gill College, Hoër Volkskool, Union High en Marlow met twee spanne. Die spanne bestaan uit ses spelers wat almal boul en almal kolf. Indien ’n kolwer 20 lopies bereik moet hulle verklaar, maar mag weer kom kolf nadat almal uit is en daar nog balle oor is. Die gehalte van kolfwerk was van die beste. Spanne het mekaar

goed die stryd aangesê en dit was van die begin af duidelik dat almal ’n oog op die gesogte Tommie Roux-trofee gehad het. Maar dit was duidelik dat Framesby in ’n klas van hul eie was en het van die begin af groot tellings op die bord gesit. Ná die poelwedstryde het Framesby en Hangklip deurgedring en in die B-poel was dit Marlow A-span en Marlow B-span. Dit het teweeggebring dat Marlow A teen Hangklip en Marlow B teen Framesby in die halfeindstryd moes speel, waarna Marlow A en Framesby hul wedstryde gewen het en dus teen mekaar in die eindstryd moes speel. Met Framesby se kolfbeurt het Marlow hul drie eerste kolwers goedkoop uitgehaal, maar in die laaste beurt met vier balle oor, het Framesby die telling bereik en die reeks gewen.

veel rompslomp om hul rommel te sorteer, maar dit is eintlik doodmaklik. “Jy kom baie vinnig in die gewoonte om jou afval in afsonderlike houers te berg. Dit raak deel van jou lewe en stel ’n voorbeeld vir jou kinders. “En voor jy jou oë uitvee, sit ons met ’n skoner planeet.” Volgens Erasmus gooi sowat 95% van die stad se mense nog voor die voet al hul rommel in die asblik en word dit in swartsakke weggery na die stortingsterrein. “Dit is iets wat ons dringend wil verander. Die meeste van daardie afval kan as iets bruikbaars herwin word, pleks daarvan om gekompakteer te word en die grond verder te besoedel.”

A RECORD field of over 7 000 walkers is expected to converge on the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium for the annual Discovery Algoa FM Big Walk.

THE IRB Rugby World Cup 2011 is in full swing – certainly with no shortage of action and nerve-wrecking moments! And the Springboks have made it into the quarter-finals, finishing top in their pool having won all their games. “The event is already one of the biggest of its kind in the Eastern Cape, and we believe it has the potential to get even bigger, with a course that is comfortable for all ages. This year the target is 7 500 participants,” said Algoa FM managing director, Dave Tiltmann. The charity event has been given a boost through a new partner. “We are very pleased to welcome Discovery as our new event partner. Working together, I believe we are building it into one of the premier fun events in the country,” he said. There has been steady growth in the popularity of the event. In 2010, there were 5 936 entrants – up from 5 439 the year before and 2 626 in 2008. Head of Sponsorships at Discovery, Jody Foster, said, “We are delighted to be part of the Discovery Algoa FM Big Walk. Walking is such an accessible form of exercise, and we encourage the people of PE to continue supporting this event. “At Discovery we are guided by a very simple idea of making people healthier and we be-

lieve that this event will do that for participants and for the charity beneficiaries.” Proceeds of the 12th annual Walk will go to CANSA and the Igazi Foundation. Last year, the event raised R60 000 for charity. Walking is recognised as one of the finest forms of exercise and Discovery Vitality members will earn 3 000 points by participating. “By staging the event at the stadium we are both helping to promote this wonderful Nelson Mandela Bay asset, as well as giving the event the space it needs to grow,” said Tiltmann. The organisers, the Elite Athletic Club, have had medals made for the first 7 500 participants to cross the finish line Discovery will provide screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels at the venue during registration, on Thursday and Friday before the event. The company will also be hosting a kiddies Futbal Feva arena and the Vitality Skills and Drills for the youngsters. There will also be food stalls and live music. Entry is R25 for the five-kilometre walk, and R25 for the 10km walk. The first 5 200 entrants will qualify for Tshirts.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) understands the close relationship between chronic illnesses and depression. Raising awareness surrounding the issue, the organisation has adopted this topic as the theme for this year’s World Mental Health Day on October 10. On October 8 at 10am, SADAG will be hosting a free World Mental Health Day workshop at the Fountain Vineyard Christian Fellowship Church on Newcombe Avenue in Port Elizabeth. A psychiatrist will be giving a talk on the link between chronic illness and depression, and will be addressing questions on treatment, self-help techniques and how to help a loved one. Port Elizabeth Support Group Leader, Simon Agar, will also be offering information and counselling-related advice. “Many people living with a chronic condition feel alone and withdraw from friends and family. This can lead to depression,” said SADAG’s, Cassey Chambers. The risk of depression increases with the severity of the illness and the extent to which it disrupts a person’s life. While 10% to 25% of women and 5% to 12% of men are generally at risk for depression, those with chronic illnesses face a much higher risk – between 25% and 33%. Suzuka stage set for historic weekend

IT’S off to Japan as the Formula 1 season heads into its final stretch this weekend. As the 15th round on the calendar Suzuka easily makes the cut as one of the great classic racing circuits anywhere in the world. Its technical layout consists of a mixture of high speed and slow technical corners and as the only

figure of eight layout of the year, it is one of the most demanding tests of man and machine. Added to that is the challenge of the weather around Suzuka which often swings back and forth like a pendulum during a race weekend. The current forecast sees mild temperatures predicted throughout the weekend. Although no rain has been forecast, the occasional shower at Suzuka is almost always part and parcel of any Japanese race weekend. Thankfully, unlike most modern Formula 1 circuits, Suzuka has not been sanitised to the hilt with massive tarmac run-off areas. With no get-out-of-jail-freecard, a mistake around the 5.807 km guarantees a trip into the gravel trap and, more often than not, out of the race. In terms of average speed over a single lap it ranks as one of the fastest on the calendar. In terms of history it has staged more than its share of memorable races over the years. It’s the venue where one of Formula 1’s most epic rivalries, Senna vs Prost, spectacularly and literally clashed. Suzuka is also where Michael Schumacher set himself apart from every former world champion. In 2003, he became the only

driver to have clinched the world driver’s championship six times. Two years later, a storming drive through the field saw then McLaren driver, Kimi Raïkkönen come, from seventeenth to first in what was described as one of the best races in the history of the sport. In 2011 Suzuka again holds the potential to add to its already impressive history. Barring a complete catastrophe, Sebastian Vettel will end the weekend as the youngest-ever double world champion. Vettel’s record-breaking run this season means that for the first time since 2006 the driver’s world championship will be concluded before the final race of the season. For the other 23 drivers, the Japanese GP is another opportunity to improve on what they’ve done so far this season. For Jenson Button, who mathematically remains in contention for the driver’s crown, it’s a further chance to extend his brilliant run of form. Despite Red Bull being the favourites on pape, he believes that McLaren should not be under-estimated. “I certainly don’t think people should under-estimate our

package. We showed at Spa that we have a car that’s very effective in high-speed corners. We’ve also improved our straight-line speed and we have a more efficient rearwing for qualifying; so I think we’re feeling positive about the weekend.” On the other side of the garage, Lewis Hamilton remains adamant that he will not alter his driving style despite several incidents, so far, this season. According to the 2008 world champion the, Japanese racing circuit suits him to a tee. “I think Suzuka will play to my strengths: it’s a track that really requires you to drive in an attacking way to be able to get a good lap time. It’s an uncompromising place. But that’s when the thrill of driving a Formula One car is at its highest; when you know you can’t afford a single mistake and where driving on the limit is the only way to get the best time.” The 2011 Formula 1 season has run through fourteen races, completed 839 race laps and offered 350 points throughout thirteen countries. This weekend one single point will make 24-year-old Sebastian Vettel the youngest-ever double world champion in the history of Formula 1.

Springboks delay Ocean Racing Series Water Sports World

Now that it has reached the knockout stages, there’s no looking back. Let’s remember, too, that in a strange way the Boks, finding themselves in what some called “the pool of death”, have an added advantage. Emerging top of Pool D, coach Peter de Villiers’ team scraped past the first round by the skin of their teeth against Wales, then glided

past minnows Fiji and Namibia before overcoming Samoa. All along they talked of the Samoan encounter as a “quarterfinal”. So now that the dress rehearsal –a testing one at that – is over, they should be ready for Saturday’s long anticipated match against the Wallabies. Now, too, is the time to put the saying of that old England scrumhalf into action. Of all things, the Boks in Sunday’s quarterfinal against the Wallabies need to be proactive. Let’s go after possession and keep it – wherever possible. groot naweek waarvan die Algoa Cup twee dae later die hoogtepunt is. Albei dié byeenkomste is op Fairview. Vir geesdriftiges is daar hope om na uit te sien. Wedrengangers kan op albei dae etes in die HB Christiaan-saal bespreek. Daar is op die Vrydagaand na die Wedrenvereniging Stakes ’n skemerparty waar Brent van Just Jinger en Nick Rush (voorheen Watershed) vir die musiek sal sorg. ’n Veiling sal gehou word en die opbrengs sal aan die plaaslike perdesorgeenheid en die

Dieresorg-vereniging geskenk word. Op die 22ste kan daar by die St. Francis-baan gholf gespeel word. Dit kos R350 per persoon om deel van ’n vierbal te wees. Met Algoa Cup-dag op die 23ste sal daar saam met die perdewedrenne hope vermaak vir oud en jonk wees.
