EC sitcom to be televised E REPORTER

KASI+ introduces a brand-new sitcom, Songololo, a groundbreaking production exclusively produced in Port Elizabeth.

Songololo is based on the story of two brothers who come up with elaborate schemes in order to fulfil a promise they made to their grandfather: to become millionaires. The 13part series starts on Wednesday, October 15 at 9pm on eKasi+, Channel 105 on OpenView HD. The sitcom features an all-new cast and crew from The Media Workshop, a Seta-accredited film and television production training provider based in the Eastern Cape. The production was entirely written, directed and produced by a core unit of five students under the mentorship of experienced director, David Lister. The long term plan is to solicit

enough funds to turn the sitcom into a sustainable on-going television show. Songololo is an isiXhosa word for a millipede with strong exterior armour which rolls into a ball if alarmed – a metaphor for the characters in the series. The sitcom is set in a double-storey commune house in Port Elizabeth occupied by an odd assortment of people from different races. It is these people that brothers, Ashwell and Jermaine Boontjies, collaborate and also clash with in their attempt to become wealthy. Their overly-optimistic side-kick and eccentric herbalist Mthunzi, their nemesis, Goodman and Oom Kosie, the landlord, all play crucial supporting roles. The dialogue is predominantly in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa. .Catch the premiere of Songololo on Wednesday, October 15 at 9pm on eKasi+, channel 105 on OpenView HD.

Soup kitchen gogos cry foul after storeroom break-in

NCEBA DLADLA THE house that Uncedo Soup Kitchen Project’s women used as a storage facility has been broken into twice already, but the setback won’t dissuade them from doing what God had called them to do - to feed the hungry in the poverty-stricken area in Kwazakhele. Their question is only, how? Eight unemployed women and mainly gogos discovered with sadness the news of the break-in where they cooked soup and food for the sick, unemployed and hungry residents at Befile Street, next to the clinic. The group’s Secretary Nontobeko Songwiqi was informed by neighbours of a broken window on Sunday morning. She rushed to the house, saw the damage and called other group members who, like her lived not very far from the house. They were distraught that nobody saw or heard anything during the break-in. “R1 300 worth of groceries including kitchen utensils, pots, stoves and chairs were sto-

len during the burglary of the house on Saturday evening,” said Mama Nontuthuzelo Sineli, the Project’s Chairperson. According to Mama Sineli, it was not the first time that their project was visited by thieves in less than a year. “This happened also last year. Although we found the suspect with the loot and handed him over to the police. We were not satisfied. He spent two days in jail and was soon seen walking the streets. We don’t know what happened as nobody told us anything,” said Sineli. She added that this break-in had effectively robbed about 200 people who daily take hot soup and bread before they take medication at the clinic. This number included elderly members of the impoverished community. About 300 more people including school children eat lunch with the gogos and enjoy the Ostrich egg sponsored by Operation Hunger every Wednesday. “How are we going to feed the hungry now?” Sineli asked.

Three in court for illegal possession of firearm, ammunition NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Port Elizabeth arrested three suspects in possession of an unlicensed firearm in Port Elizabeth last Friday. According to PE police spokesperson Cap-

tain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, Mount Road SAPS and the K9 Unit arrested the trio aged between 19 and 22 and recovered a 9mm firearm, thanks to information from members of the community. After receiving information about the men that might have had an illegal firearm in their possession, the police followed the suspects into Bad Boyz Clothing shop on the

Residents show interest in the mayor’s outreach programme NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay residents have taken interest in their social development. This became evident during the Mayoral Outreach Programme that took place in the metro municipality during the last week of September. In this last week of September the Executive mayor Cllr Benson Fihla and some members of his Mayoral Committee conducted community imbizos in the form of Masithethisane (Let’s talk) Programme which had residents talking. Local community halls were abuzz and that was pleasing to the metro municipality, according to municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki. He said, “As South Africa continues to celebrate 20 years of freedom and democracy, it is becoming more important for government to quickly identify challenges, come up with interventions and work with more vigour and commitment to change peoples’

lives for the better.” This was a resounding success, according to Mniki. As the intention of the programme was to create a platform for local communities to raise issues that needed government attention, he said, issues raised showed that there was indeed a need for such an engagement. “We were encouraged. People showed interest,” the municipal spokesperson told PE Express Indaba. “In the main,” Mniki said, “residents spoke of the need for housing. There were generally service delivery issues where water and sanitation, sewerage and others came up. Of critical importance though, was a call for job opportunities especially from the side of young people.” Residents, according to Mniki, raised the issues freely. They enjoyed the platform. “We hope they show the same interest in looking after the services well when they were delivered. We hope our residents won’t vandalise the water taps and other amenities when we deliver them,” said Mniki.

Chippa Mpengesi’s youngest son dies NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the football fraternity have sent their condolences to the Mpengesi family after the untimely passing of their beloved son, Zenande on Saturday September 27. The tragedy happened a few hours before Chippa United, otherwise known as the Chilli Boys, beat the Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates 1-0 at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in an Absa Premiership league match. Twenty months-old Zenande was the youngest son of Chippa United Football Club (FC) boss Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi and his wife. The Chilli Boys Chairman had to fly to Cape Town and miss seeing his boys giving Amabhakabhaka a run for their money. According to reports, Zenande accidentally drowned in a swimming pool at his home in Tygerburg.

Premier Soccer League (PSL) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Brand de Villiers was the first to send his condolences to the family on behalf of the premier league. On behalf of the PSL family, he said, “We convey our sincere condolences. May his soul rest in peace. “Words cannot express our shock and sadness, and one cannot imagine what the family is going through at the loss of a young child. We pray for their solace and comfort during this difficult period,” said de Villiers. According to Chippa United FC spokesperson Lukanyo Mzinzi, Zenande will be laid to rest after a service to be held at the Universal Church in Cape Town today (Wednesday, October 1). “We would like to request that the family be given time (to mourn the loss of their beloved son) and not be interrupted in this difficult time,” said Mzinzi.

corner of Mount Road and Govan Mbeki Avenue, North End but after searching, police could not find the firearm. “But when members looked around the area where the suspects were standing they found the 9mm firearm and ammunition that the suspects were hiding among their clothes,” said Janse Van Rensburg. She said the firearm was taken away for

ballistic testing with the aim of ascertaining whether it was used in other crimes committed. Police were also verifying the serial number which had also worn off, according to Janse Van Rensburg. The suspects were expected to appear in court before the Magistrate to face charges of being in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

Christmas in the Home: Home is where the heart is REPORTER CHRISTMAS in the Home proved that home is where the heart is, when representatives handed over a cheque for R5 000 to the Sisonke Community Centre in Zwide recently. Port Elizabeth’s annual gift and craft fair raised the money by selling shopping bags, generously sponsored by Makro, during its 2013 edition. According to event coordinator, Elsje Smuts, the charity was chosen because it performed a vital service as a feeding scheme for poverty-stricken families in the Zwide, Soweto-on-Sea and Veeplaas areas. She said the funds would be used to help establish a community food garden to supplement the needs of the soup kitchen. Smuts said it was Christmas in the Home’s philosophy that, amid the excitement and generosity of the festive season, the less fortunate should never be forgotten. “We are so grateful for what we have and believe that we should give to those who

have less. For me, using Christmas in the Home as a platform to promote causes close to our hearts is a natural and logical step.” Last year, a number of non-profit organisations received sponsored stands at which to sell their wares and build awareness for their cause, she said. These included children’s charities Reach for a Dream and SOS Children’s Village, as well as The Hope Factory and Kwasa Project, which aim to assist previously disadvantaged entrepreneurs and generate income-earning opportunities for HIVpositive people respectively. The Kwasa Project and Lake Farm Care Centre have confirmed their participation ahead of the 2014 event. PE’s premier Christmas expo will take place at its new venue on the exhibition level of The Boardwalk Hotel and Conference Centre from November 27 to 30. School children debate environmental preservation for sustainability NCEBA DLADLA THE Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) held their Provincial Environmental Awards Competition at the Summerstrand Hotel in Port Elizabeth recently. Tipping district Primary and High School winners on the themes, “The role of indigenous knowledge in sustainable natural resource management” and “The possibilities associated with Shale Gas extraction in the Eastern Cape” respectively, the competition showed just how aware today’s generation is of the importance of nature conservation. Primary school children acted, sang and

recited poetry on the importance of nature conservation “for us and future generations.” The competition carried huge financial rewards for the winners. Through the awards which start at district level, the provincial government was hoping to inculcate in the children the culture of appreciating the environment as they were playing and learning from it, and also to appreciate that there are economic benefits that are derived from it, said DEDEAT MEC Honourable Sakhumzi Somyo. He said this was important to do whilst children were still very young. According to the old isiXhosa adage, “Bagotywa bebatsha”, said MEC Somyo, adding

that his department wanted to inculcate in the youth the culture of appreciating the environment as they were playing and learning from it. “I have appreciated with excitement how they have captured the indigenous basis of knowledge and integrated that with their understanding of government’s efforts of preserving nature and the environment through legislation, among other things,” the MEC told PE Express Indaba. According to Somyo, our environment is the treasure that must be preserved at all times. There must be innovation for economic development. “The learners captured that in the competition,” said MEC Somyo, adding however,

3

that whilst the stage was set for competition among learners, it also laid a foundation for the elders and leaders to learn from the children. He said he was happy learners could appreciate that there were economic benefits that were derived from the environment. The MEC spoke about the discovery of Shale Gas in Graaff-Reinet in the Karoo region as an important development for the people of the province, adding that there was a dialectical link between environmental conservation and the developmental side of the local economy. According to Somyo, preservation of Shale Gas was necessary to protect the environment for sustainable livelihood.

MEC Qoboshiyane visits NMB for food gardening talks NCEBA DLADLA THE MEC for Rural Development and Agrarian Reform, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, was in Nelson Mandela Bay last week to encourage communities to use their gardens to push back the frontiers of unemployment and poverty.

Qoboshiyane met the agriculture commodity groups, community food garden groups, business formations, sector education and training authorities, churches and the Nelson Mandela Bay Local Economic Development (LED) Department to discuss his department’s plans to encourage communities to form food banks using agricultural products. Qoboshiyane had breakfast with the stakeholders at BKB Hall in Grahamstown Road, North End where he offered thousands of seedlings and garden tools to the community food gardens that were being launched and those that were already in existence in New Brighton, Kwazakhele and KwaNobuhle. Clad in a green overall and boots, Qoboshiyane himself planted the seedlings with the project managers of the community food gardens. He commended men and women for working together to fight starvation in their communities, adding that food gardens would

help them save financially whilst food fresh from the garden was good for their health. The MEC’s entourage which included members of his department, metro officials, the Church fraternity and ANC volunteers visited the community food gardens at the Doors of Hope Children’s Home, Lim’ekhaya Food Project, Sililitha Project, Seyisi Primary School and the Anglican Church in Kwazakhele. “We’ve come to say to our communities, we offer bursaries in this Department to help matrics study agriculture for food production,” said Qoboshiyane to wide applause. He added that those interested in agricultural disciplines like livestock farming, crop farming, poultry production and hydroponic farming, for instance, should not hesitate to consult his Department for application forms. A traditional cuisine lunch was prepared at Seyisi Primary School where Stars of Education winning teacher Nomonde Ntsundwana works. With the support of her principal, the School Governing Body, supportive community gardeners and pupils, Ntsundwana is teaching environmental awareness through vegetable gardening. This was commended by Qoboshiyane who also promised to provide the school with a safe place to keep their garden tools.

Pillars of New Brighton and Korsten development book launched NCEBA DLADLA A BOOK chronicling the heroes and heroines of politics, education, visual arts, community development, sport and business in the New Brighton and Korsten area during the apartheid years was launched at the City Hall in Port Elizabeth recently. According to Nelson Mandela Bay Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture (SRAC) Executive Director, Noxolo Nqwazi, the book which includes men and women, aptly referred to as Movers and Shakers who were involved in medicine, journalism and religion, including clerics, describes how they selflessly used their time and resources, to plant the seed that would ultimately grow to become the tree that today’s and future generations would benefit from. The book took time to complete, according to Stan Mosia who compered at the event. It had to be launched during Heritage Month as part of the history that must be preserved for future generations. “We thank Mike Phantsi for coming up with the idea of establishing the wall of remembrance for these our heroes and heroines as early as 1998 for the benefit of our children and tourists,” said author and music composer Mbulelo Nzo, who was honoured for his contribution in literature. Through this initiative, which was started at New Brighton library, the profiles of luminaries like Dr John Kani, Dr Winston Ntshona, Nomsa Nkonyeni and Looks Matoto (Per-

forming Arts), Mthunzi Mapitiza (Sport), Reverends Mthetheleli De Villiers Soga, James Haya and Themba Mahuwa (Religion), Lumka Menze and Mzi Mahola (Literature) were highlighted. The Korsten Library followed suit to include such big names as Tennyson Mackay, (sport) Ma Lilian Diedericks (politics) Joyce

Millicent Smith (medicine) and Winston Peterson (Performing Arts) among others. According to Nzo, the committee was aware that a list of sports and political activism in Nelson Mandela Bay would include many people and would take a lot more time to complete. While this work was not easy either, he said, they had to start somewhere. He added

that it was now incumbent on the present generation to continue with the work of nation building. “Some of thee people were recognised in other cities, provinces and international countries without any respect shown at home. This is indeed a good story to tell,” said Nqwazi.

ACC Synod takes a stand on transformation after 106 years celebration NCEBA DLADLA THOSE called to lead the church as Priests should be the good shepherds, like Christ, and strive no to lead the sheep astray, said African Catholic Church (ACC) Arch Bishop, his Grace OJ Mathopa. The Arch was speaking during the 106 years celebration of the ACC which had a Provincial Synod at St Thomas Parish, KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage last week. Arch Bishop Mathopa reminded members of God’s leading them throughout the years under the theme: “Ebenezer: Thus far the Lord has helped us.” “The journey of this church throughout the years has been plagued by trials and tribulations that we got to overcome through Divine intervention,” said Mathopa, adding that when dividing forces, conflict and maladministration were allowed to rule, God’s will always prevailed. This, he said, was because of men and women who relied on the power and the efficacy of prayer and sacrifice. “Today we stand in victory for He saw us through,” said Arch Bishop Mathopa, adding that compliance and dialogue was necessary to take the church forward. The Church’s Dean of the Province, his Lordship Bishop A.S. Dire called the newly ordained priests and deacons to ship in and not ship out until they reached their destination. “The highlight of this conference was the signing of the new constitution which took time and commitment to finalise and the dedication of the newly built parish, St Thomas,” said Bishop Sonwabo Hoyi of the Eastern Cape Diocese.

He added, “All the delegates were in agreement with the church transformation. They agreed with taking the church forward. We want to give young people with skills and innovations an opportunity to take the church forward.” Bishop Hoyi also highlighted the ACC

youth’s involvement in the launch of Cancer Month working in tandem with the Cancer Association of SA. The seven dioceses lit candles and pledged to fight against Cancer which is currently a deadly disease that surpassed TB and HIV/ Aids.

Chippa faces Platinum Stars in Telkom Cup away game NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay Professional Soccer League (PSL) outfit Chippa United will visit Platinum Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium this Saturday October 4 as the homeside will be attempting to defend their Telkom Knock Out Cup Championship. The Chilli Boys as United is known, is on song under caretaker coach Roger Sikhakhane who took the reigns after the resignation recently of head coach Kostadin Papic. At this rate, Sikhakane could be making the position his own, as new recruit Mitch D’ Avary was set solely to look after the club’s development fortunes. The Chilli Boys gave the Soweto giants Orlando Pirates a 1-0 beating at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium last Saturday, September 27 and would like to continue from where they have left off. Away from home, the Chilli Boys will be

trying to repeat the fate they offered to Dikwena (Platinum Stars) on their opening match of the season in the elite Absa Premier league. To date, Chippa Mpengesi’s boys are sitting at 10 points in seven matches after snatching victories against Dikwena, Moroka Swallows and Amabhakabhaka (Orlando Pirates) and drawing against Ajax Cape Town. “These boys are playing together as a team. I think they are going to make it difficult for other teams to beat them at home. They are making Nelson Mandela Bay stadium the slaughter house,” said former Kaizer Chiefs marksman Patrick Mayo earlier. Mayo, now an SABC Umhlobo Wenene soccer analyst believes the win against Pirates was proving his point. Mayo does not believe, however, that the Chilli Boys cannot keep the momentum against Platinum Stars, even away from home.

Friendly City FC juniors received kits SELBY MADIKANE IT was all smiles on the faces of Friendly City FC members when Access Management sponsored kit to the three junior teams in the function which was held at Molefe Primary School recently. Handing over the three full sets of kit to Friendly City, Access Management General Manager Thuli Mtila said their company was committed to add value to the community. Mtila said, “As part of our Corporate Social Investment, we decided to plough back into

the community. Furthermore, the sponsor will encourage the children to take part in sport and refrain from doing crime and taking drugs. We fully understand the plight of Friendly City FC that they are one of the clubs which do not have financial resources. I am fully convinced that the sets of kit for U/11, U/13 and U/15 will make a big difference to them.” Friendly City FC President Mxolisi Manyathi said that his junior players’ morale would be boosted. President Manyathi highlighted that the sponsorship meant a lot to the entire club. Manyathi explains, “As City is one of the oldest teams in New Brighton, I think our club’s integrity is retained. Access Management has changed the lives of juniors. I want to say thank you Access Management for the kit you have sponsored to our junior teams. I think that the business fraternity has realised that Access Management is committed to uplift the standard of the less fortunate communities.” Standing behind the players are Friendly City Deputy President Thamsanqa Sululu, Access Management Human Resource Manager Nombasa Zini, Friendly City President Mxolisi Manyathi and Access Management General Manager Thuli Mtila.
