T is still not clear why Siyabulela Mboya (33), a South African Police Service (SAPS) Constable shot and fatally wounded his off-duty police officer wife, Sergeant Zintle Mboya, (also 33), at her place of residence in Goede Hoop Avenue, Fairbridge Heights, Uitenhage on Sunday evening. According to SAPS Uitenhage police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basil Seekoei, Fairbridge Height neighbours head gunshots fired and alerted the police who ran to the scene for investigation. Upon arrival at about 9pm, police found the two lifeless bodies lying in a pool of blood. According to W.O. Seekoei the preliminary investigations indicated that const. Siyabulela Mboya, a SAPS member stationed at Kirkwood who was also off-duty, shot her and then (shot) himself.” A police firearm was found on the scene. while the motive of the murder was unknown, according to the police spokesperson. Die Burger newspaper reported yesterday, that a colleague of const Mboya, who prefers not to be named and stays close to the Mboya home, said two of the couple’s three children, a boy aged (6) and daughter (3) were home when the incident occurred. According to the colleague the children are being taken care of by family members. A relative who knew the couple well, and who also spoke to PE Express Indaba on condition of anonymity, said he was shocked but not surprised by the incident as it was bound to happen. The couple stayed in KwaNobuhle township before they moved to the house in Fairbridge Heights on the outskirts of Uitenhage. The friend said that the couple was very much in love, but they were always quarrelling and that the husband was “short-tempered”.

PHOTO: DEON FERREIRA “This was bound to happen. We are sorry for their little children who found themselves without both parents in the stroke of a minute” . “We are saddened by such a loss. It is frustrating to lose young minds and people from the security cluster whose services we valued in the fight against crime in the metro and

surrounding areas,” said Nelson Mandela Bay municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki. Mniki added, “We also hope their colleagues understand that there are places available for assistance should they find themselves under duress.” W/O Seekoei told PE Express Indaba that

they did not want to speculate at this early stage of their investigation. Instead, he said, the SAPS Management in the Eastern Cape expressed their deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased. Police were investigating two cases of murder, said W/O Seekoei.

Coega Ridge ‘holistic housing development’ gets green light REPORTER DEVELOPERS behind what will be South Africa’s largest mixed-use residential development, aimed at denting the country’s housing backlog of 2.3-million, announced the project’s green light on August 26 at the Fourth Affordable Housing Summit in Johannesburg. Speaking on the first day of the three-day summit at Crowne Plaza, Nu-Way Housing Development’s Executive Director Jordan Mann told delegates that the Coega Ridge development, adjacent to the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth, had received the green light from the Department of Environmental Affairs. This, he said, paved the way for town planning to commence with on the “holistic housing development” which will, upon completion, boast 40 000 housing units catering for all tenure groups, including subsidised, rental, affordable and high-income housing. “This is all being planned in one area. We want to break the mould of what’s been done in the past where there is segregation based on income level,” said Mann. “As families grow, they won’t have to move out of the area.” The project is roughly the same size as the township of Motherwell, which lies adjacent to the 3 200 hectare Coega Ridge site.

Phase one would include up to 2 500 housing units and could begin within 24 months, pending the approval of the project’s town planning and the cooperation of stakeholders, said Mann. Planned to roll out over six to 10 years, the development has an overall value of more than R6-billion. It will also include community facilities in addition to schools, a university, a technical college, a hospital, neighbourhood shopping centres, and a regional shopping centre spanning up to 110 000m², said Mann. Also included will be a light industrial area, a railway station, office parks and a sports academy. An upmarket eco-estate with a golf course and a hotel are also in the pipeline. The project will cut the Nelson Mandela Bay metro’s housing backlog of 87 000 units by roughly 40%. At the height of construction, Mann said up to 5 000 jobs per month would be created. “This is our flagship project and one we are very excited to announce,” said Mann. “Coega Ridge will essentially be a new satellite city and will go a long way to alleviating the massive housing backlog in the region. “The phenomenal growth of the Coega IDZ with projects in the pipeline like the PetroSA refinery is seeing a massive need for mixed-use housing in the area,” said Mann. Nu-Way was established in 1986 and has developed over 65 000 subsidised and affordable housing units around the country.

Bay-TV breaks new ground with Final Control Centre LIZEKA TANDWA

LOCAL community station BAY-TV have broken new ground as they announced the launch of their Final Control Centre (FCC) which will see the station going live and on the ground on all local events and breaking news across the Metro on its DStv channel 260. At the launch of the FCC, Channel Manager Lungile Nduvane said the station crossed over from FCC control at Urbanbrew studios to its own FCC at 2pm on Thursday, August 28, which was established with the help of Multichoice. According to the Post Production and FCC Unit Manager, Lizo Tolom, “FCC is a playout centre, which means we will be playlisting our own shows and ingesting our own shows and broadcasting them from Port Elizabeth to the nation.” Nduvane said with their new centre they would also be able to broadcast international, local and national sport that took place in the city including Ironman and the Bellbuoy challenge. “We also want to broaden our viewership to the Afrikaans audience. We are speaking to local production companies to come up with ideas where we can be able also to tell

stories from the Afrikaans community in both the northern and western suburbs. We are glad also to dispel rumours which circulated earlier in the year that Bay-TV was closing down. This is a culmination of the hard work and efforts by the staff, board members and our partners and Multichoice,” said Nduvane. Multichoice said that to further their partnership with the station they would also be assisting the station with technical assistance to do inserts and content. “We are encouraging the station to build its own content. We are also exploring other opportunities of engagement with the station in an ongoing discussion with its board members,” said Head of Stakeholder and Regulatory Affairs for MultiChoice South Africa Group, Calvo Mawela. Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Acting Executive Mayor Wandisile Jikeka said they would be lobbying other provincial departments to show support for the station with the hopes of making the station expand throughout the province. “We have no intention of interfering with the content of the station - it must remain unbiased - but we are hoping that we can also utilise this platform and showcase the work that the Municipality is doing to help grow the economy of the Metro,” said Jikeka.

NOMINATIONS for this year’s BLG Logistics Senior Citizen of the Year Awards are closed. Each week nominees from the three categories will be profiled in the PE Express as the countdown begins for the awards function on Saturday, October 25, at Summerstrand Inn. The prestige awards are predominantly run by the Golden Oldies Fund raising club recognising the time and effort volunteered by senior citizens, making a positive contribution to the community. Categories are from ages 70-79, 80-89, and 90 and over. Nominees will be assessed by a local selection committee and judging panel. The award aims to promote the concept of active ageing which is all about creating and maintaining a great quality life for individuals and groups as they age. “For someone who excelled in a sport in their heyday, becoming a mentor or coach to the younger generation can be very rewarding. “Today so many youngsters lead sedentary, unhealthy lifestyles. Seeing an active senior citizen leading the way could inspire children and their parents to get active themselves,” said accountant at BLG Logistics South Africa Juanita Krauspe.

Preliminary judging will take place with an Information Workshop and Tea this Thursday, September 4. The deadline for selecting category finalists will take place on Friday, September 12 and judging of finalists on Thursday, September 25 and Friday 26. This year’s nominees are:

The curves of humanity celebrated at NMMU Women’s Day event NCEBA DLADLA THE power that united women possess was spelt out during the Second Annual Women’s Day Celebration at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Missionvale Campus last Wednesday August 27. The NMMU, brought together speakers including artist Nomsa Mazwai, social activist Lali Dangazele together with academics led by NMMU Campus Director Dr Phakama Ntshongwana, general employees, university students as well as teachers and learners from neighbouring schools. The talks were in an open discussion format with speakers allowing the audience to make comments and - or ask questions on cultural, gender-based and political issues. Eastern Cape born Nomboniso Gasa of the Chisana clan, speaking on the topic, “Celebrating the curves of humanity”. Gasa, who was a guest-soeaker, a researcher, freelance writer, gender-activist and socio-cultural commentator, drew the audience back in time, to argue that the historical event where 20 000 women in August 1956 marched to Pretoria was in fact, not the beginning of SA women’s activism. Gasa said the struggle for liberation among South African women could be traced to before 1912 even though they were not allowed to join the then African Native Congress. Since 1913, according to Gasa, SA women have been organising themselves to fight against inequality and oppression.

The first ever political protest witnessed in this country was waged by women in Bloemfontein in 1913. Women were fighting against carrying about 13 permits (which included one to use the laundry). They were called Oonolaundry (Laundry workers) or domestic workers in today’s language. “They were arrested and Sol Plaatjie, the editor of the newspaper Batho, wrote about the brave women he saw in Bloemfontein jails,” reminisced Gasa, adding that long before 1956, some women thought way before their time, to say that they deserved better. Women came up with their Charter in 1954, the same year that Bantu Education was introduced. It is women like Albertina Sisulu who were in the fore-front the resistance against, hence Chief Albert Luthuli coined the phrase, Malibongwe igama lamakhosikazi - (Let the name of women be praised). “Those (1956) women, the path-finders, some from the rural areas of South Africa, marched without permission – not even from their husbands,” said Gasa, adding that women freed themselves. Freedom was not given to them on a platter. Gasa challenged women of today to know what freedom means to them. Gasa believed freedom was the affirmation of the dignity of women’s humanity. . PE Epxress Indaba reporter Nceba Dladla attended the “Celebrating the curves of humanity” event at Missionvale Campus, last Thursday. For social photos of the event visit www.pe-express.co.za.

Unemployment, no deterrent for Ikhwezi Lomso Soup kitchen NCEBA DLADLA UNEMPLOYMENT could not deter some caring members of the Uitenhage community from starting a soup kitchen to beat hunger that killed a number of unemployed and sick among them. Though they themselves were unemployed, members of the Ikwezi Lomso Soup Kitchen, based at 41 Kwatsha Street, are making a difference in the lives of many young and old residents who depend on them for a hot meal - at least twice a

week. According to Nombeko Zilindile, the chairperson of the soup kitchen, there were 10 women and two males when they started the soup kitchen which they intend to register with the Social Development and Special Programmes Department as a Non-Profit-making Organisation (NPO). Since then some of the members fell by the way-side. “It is not easy but we are determined to help,” said Zilindile. They feed about 50 people a day in the two days of the week and had recently fed 75 people in one day. “This soup kitchen helps us a lot. I am unemployed and face sleeping on an empty stomach. I thank Ikwezi Lomso members for thinking about us,” said Zwelandile Boya (43), a resident. “They cook us nice food. I wish it can happen every day,” said Likhona Jafta (15) who attends school. “We started this soup kitchen in February this year because we saw the need. We saw hunger that was ravaging the community and decided to do something,” said treasurer, Sisa Scott. According to Scott, many unemployed people in the neighbourhood must take medication to treat diseases like Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, TB and HIV. “We decided to help them, first by taking food from our homes and preparing it so they don’t take tablets on empty stomachs,” said Scott, adding that they were now paying R100 each to buy samp, mealie meal and vegetables and sometimes meat to make their hot and scrumptious meals for the hungry. “We are worried that we cook only twice a week whilst the need is so enormous. People come every day and expect food while our capacity only allows us to do this on Tuesdays and Thursdays,” said Zilindile.

Shukuma Dance Festival for traditional dancers NCEBA DLADLA THE Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) in the Province launched the Shukuma Dance Festival for traditional dancing at the Port Elizabeth Opera House last Thursday, August 28. Participants from Nelson Mandela Bay, Cacadu (Sarah Baartman), OR Tambo, Amathole, Alfred Nzo, Joe Gqabi and Chris Hani District Municipalities are among those that will be meeting at the PE Opera House from Tuesday September 30 to Thursday October 2 to select the champions of this inaugural traditional dance competition which will involve a story line. “Seven of the best groups from the winning districts will be coming to Nelson Mandela Bay to negotiate their case as to why they should be declared the provincial Shukuma Dance Festival Champions,” said PE Opera House General

Manager, Monde Ngonyama. “Ballet and contemporary dance forms usually tell stories. We are, for the first time, coming up with the innovation of a traditional form of dance telling a story,” a proud Ngonyama said of this creative arts development in the province which is spearheaded by DSRAC. DSRAC Performing Arts Assistant Manager Phindile Tiyo said his department introduced the dance competition because they were happy with the development of theatre which was also taking place at the PE Opera House. “We, as the Department, are aware that drama is being taken care of through the iPhulo Drama Festival which is also run by the PE Opera House,” said Tiyo. The winning district groups have been upskilled and well prepared for a tough competition ahead, said Tiyo who thanked the PE Opera House for a job well done. According to Ngonyama, the district winners will converge at the PE Opera House on September 30 to do a normal traditional dance. On October 1, the dance competition with a story-line will be held and the best of the best will be announced on Thursday October 2.

PHOTO:SUPPLIED NELSON Mandela Bay theatre lovers are invited to come and watch “Whispering Shadows”, one of the best theatre productions to be produced by the legendary thespian, Marlene Pieterse, at the Port Elizabeth Opera House from Thursday, September 4 to 6. This production is one of the successful partnerships between the PE Opera House and the National Arts Council aimed at reviving theatre in Nelson Mandela Bay. “Whispering Shadows” is a love story that was penned by the Gauteng-based Limpopo born Lerato Mosedame in seSotho and translated into English without losing its gist and purpose. It is a story that mixes folklore and modernity in quite an interesting way. PE Opera House Artistic Manager Nobesuthu Rayi believes Pieterse has out-

done herself in this production which keeps the audiences on their toes as they are forced to take part in the story with mixed feelings and emotions. Without giving too much away, Rayi said, “This is a love triangle story with its perfect imperfections and the audience’s expectations of a beautiful story would be fulfilled.” According to Rayi, the whole production team was the best in the game as the choreographer Lubabalo Mbombela spent more than two years learning from the best while sharpening his skills in Sweden. Actors have been selected from an array of qualified professionals in Nelson Mandela Bay and the Makana Local Municipality. Their portrayal of the roles in the production tells a beautiful story written by Mosedame and directed by Pieterse.

October sings EP rugby development song

NCEBA DLADLA THERE is a notable upsurge in Eastern Province Rugby since the grassroots development of the sport. This according to EP Schools Rugby Development Manager, Willem October. According to October, EP schools that took part in the Die Burger sponsored rugby championships held at Marlow High School in Cradock on Saturday August 30 came back triumphant. “We came back with two trophies in the three possible winners’ cups we entered in the 2014 Die Burger Schools Rugby Competition,”

said a proud October. “We entered the Big Schools Section. Those are the schools with more than 10 teams, the Medium Schools, meaning those schools with eight teams and fewer, and Small Teams, meaning schools with fewer than four teams.” In the Small Teams, Cape Town’s Excelsior Secondary School beat Port Elizabeth’s Bertrams High School 39-3 to take the championship. Uitenhage’s Brandwag High had the better of Augsburg High 49-33 in the Medium Schools’ Section while hosts Marlow High pipped Paarl Boys High 11-10 in the Big Schools Section to become Champions, said October.

“EP won two out of the three sections we entered. This means we are doing almost everything right in the development of rugby in this region,” said October about the team that brought glory in the Southern Region Tournament that took place early this year and also took home the Craven Week Trophy recently. During all these competitions, October said there were young rugby players performing so well that SA rugby lovers would soon see them playing for the Springboks. “Our infrastructure is right. The administration, coaching staff and players are doing something right. This was our year. You’ve got to see our players in action. They play an attractive rugby,” an overjoyed October said.

Two teams compete in PEFA Premier League race CALLIES and Vodacom NMMU Madibaz are both setting their sights on winning the Port Elizabeth Football Association (PEFA) Premier League after they won their league games over the weekend. Hopes of Callies’ supporters of winning the prestige trophy were kept alive, when their side lived up to expectations in their 3-0 triumph over PE Defence at Londt Park. Vodacom NMMU Madibaz taught Motherwell Academy a free soccer lesson when they punished them 7-0 at Victoria Park Grounds. Highbury failed to collect the maximum 3-

points in their 2-all draw when they hosted NMB Municipality in Bridgemead. Warriors’ supporters would definitely not want to be reminded of their side’s game against Forresters that thwarted their side 6-1 at their own hunting ground – Diaz Club. Finding themselves in the uncomfortable log standings, PE Homerovers registered a hard a 1-0 win over Acemates at Westbourne Oval Stadium. Hearts were scheduled to play against KwaDwesi All Stars but their clash was stopped owing to rain. – SELBY MADIKANE

Schools league started in Motherwell SELBY MADIKANE SASFA Motherwell Schools League started in full swing in the entire Motherwell Zone on Wednesday. According SASFA Motherwell Schools Chairperson Siphiwo Mtshingila, the league is the initiative of National Minister of Sport, Honourable Fikile Mbalula, who advocates mass participation by schools. Khulile Primary School U/15 boys’ team had to dig

deep to beat their neighbours Mdengentonga Primary 4-3. Khulile Primary School U/15 girls’ team brimmed with confidence when they thumped Mdengentonga Primary School 3-1. Despite trailing by 3-1 Imbasa Primary School U/15 boys’ team collected three points from Melisizwe Primary School whose team was found to have overage players. Melisizwe Primary School girls did not pitch up for the game.

According to Mphuthumi Makeleni of Olympic Style Boxing Club based in Wells Estates, the aim of the games was to select a schools’ boys’ team which was formerly known as cadets. The boxers kept the fans on their feet when they exchanged punches. It was evident that the young fighters came prepared to their fights. The judges, who were kept busy, were Linda Nondzaba, Mzukisi Oliphant and Zamekile Eric Ngene as well as the reserve judge Mthetho. The young boxers displayed all the necessary boxing skills, thus sending the crowds into raptures whenever they threw leather at each other. After the tournament the team that will take part in the tournament in Mdantsane from 11 to 14 September 2014, was announced. The selected team comprises the following

boxers: .Lubabalo Lusizi and Lukholo Soga (28 kg each); .Aviwe Ndimandi and Xhantilomzi Gorata (30 kg each); .Agcobile Bosman and Agcobile Mbiko; .Buhle Plaatjies and Unathi Fololo (34 kg); .Linokhanyo Mbhathana and Thandimfundo Mene (36 kg); .Simphiwe Didi and Bandile Qengqani (37.5 kg); .Luzuko April and Sinethemba Gunguluza (39 kg); .Anele Hashe (41 kg); .Siphosethu Matyholweni (43 kg); .Sivusizwe Ncwadi (46 kg); .Welile Tokwe (48 kg); .Landile Msizi (50 kg); .Liyabona Ngcivana (56 kg); .Sinelisiwe Mtati (69 kg); .Luthando Masheki (75 kg) and Zintle Ntlanjeni (female boxer). RUGBY supporters saw some surprises when top teams could not overcome the socalled small teams in their EP Grand Challenge Rugby Leagues games recently. Humansdorp side Kruisfontein RFC shared the spoils 17-17 with the gallant GAP Despatch at Humansdorp. Despatch were aiming to pile misery on Kruisfontein but the home side were well prepared. Kruisfontein upped their game because they wanted to prove a point that they were capable of stunning the big guns. Kruisfontein surfed forward and managed to the final score level at 17-17. Caltex Crusaders cruised into a narrow 17-12 victory over Spring Rose. NMMU Madibaz had a difficult test when they defeated Grahamstown Brumbies at South Campus. PE SAPS added more to African Bombers woes when they beat them 26-7 at Zwide Stadium. Progress RFC were on top gear when they edged out Harlequins 38-26 in Uitenhage.
