PROTESTS OVER TEACHING IN AFRIKAANS, LACK OF TOILETS
Parents close school
NCEBA DLADLA
P
ARENTS of learners at the James Ndulula Primary School in KwaLanga, Uitenhage closed the school last week demanding an urgent meeting with Department of Education officials. Angry parents were standing at the closed school gate singing and toyi-toying while the principal and a mixture of Coloured and African teachers were sitting in their cars outside the school yard. Parents highlighted a litany of complaints ranging from the school being without a permanent principal, shortage of staff, children being taught in Afrikaans and also not getting teaching in important subjects like mathematics. Furthermore, according to the parents, the school has no running water and no sanitation. They said, the school is a health hazard.
Children were expected to go to the nearest houses to relieve themselves - something that parents said put their lives at risk. “There is a shortage of teachers in this school. Classes are overcrowded. When the school gets teachers, it is Afrikaans-speaking teachers, as though the department was changing this into an Afrikaans-medium school,” said Gcobani Gomomo, a parent. Parents said they understood that theirs was a mixed area, with only one primary school in the area teaching in isiXhosa. They, however, feared that their children would not succeed in education - as Afrikaans was to them a third language. “We don’t want Afrikaans, unless the Department of Education wants to bring back 1976 - when African students in the country rioted against Afrikaans teaching. “We have an acting deputy principal in this school, without a principal. There are vacancies for two HODs and six teachers. How will this school succeed” asked another parent.
“When we came to school this morning, we found the gates locked. Parents said they would only open after getting answers from the Department of Education,” the teachers said when asked why they were not in class, teaching during school hours. Provincial Department of Education spokesperson Mali Mtima said they were aware of the situation at the school and were dealing with the educational matters that affected the school. He said they also feared that some of the issues raised at the school were racially inclined - with no bearing on education. “We would, however, urge parents to open those gates with immediate effect and hand over the keys to the relevant authorities at the school. The Department of Education has an open-door policy for negotiations,” said Mtima, adding that the concerned parents should use that policy to engage his department in a dialogue to find amicable solution to the problems they were facing at the school.

Still no solution at New card fraud wave hits PE Eastcape Midlands College LIZEKA TANDWA
NCEBA DLADLA
According to Kilian the impasse started last year when NEHAWU raised issues of its dissatisfaction with the institution. The Employee/Employee Forum that was appointed to look into these was unsuccessful because “NEHAWU cited that they “did not recognise the functional value of the Forum.” according to the institution’s head. “We are involved in an unprotected strike action as a last resort. This, we do with our eyes wide open. Our attempts at solving the problems of this college have fallen on deaf ears,” said NEHAWU Secretary, Kenneth Fitoyi. He added that they were acting on the outcome of a Deloitte and Touche investigation on allegations of corruption, nepotism, racism and maladministration. “We’ve got evidence that implicates some of the senior managers in this institution that is still oppressing Africans. We want Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande to come down and see what we are facing in this college,” said Fitoyi, adding that they had the support of students, parents, SANCO, COSATU and the ANC.
EASTCAPE Midlands College has fired 66 National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) workers for taking part in an unprotected strike action, and reportedly ignoring ultimatums to return to work. NEHAWU members and students were yesterday still out of the classroom singing and toyitoying. College management was locked in meetings, trying hard to restore order and normality whilst the administrators and lecturers were taking part in unprotected industrial action. “As we are committed to quality teaching, learning and assessment in a safe environment, management has put various plans in place to ensure positive progress,” said College VicePrincipal Danie Kilian. Kilian said they had plans in place to ensure that there was progress with regard to the application and registration of prospective students from February 2 - 17.

VICTIMS of card fraud who are losing thousands of rands in the process, are taking to social media to vent their frustration as the spate of card fraud cases becomes a grave concern for local police. Police say they are investigating several cases of card fraud with a special task team assigned to investigate the problem. Police spokesperson, Sandra Janse van Rensburg said, “There has been a drastic increase in ATM card swopping crime over the last eight months. At the same time there has, however, also been a decline in ATM handheld card skimming. The decline in skimming can be related to the almost complete roll-out of the chip bank cards by all the banks.” Janse van Rensburg said it was a known fact that ATM card crimes were committed by organised groupings. “It is also apparent that these syndicate groups do not restrict themselves to a particular area.” One of many local victims who have been hit by card fraud said he has lost over R3000. Xolisile Trongo, who banks with African Bank, said he was awakened by an SMS notice on January 18, stating that he had withdrawn an amount of R1 169. “The first thing I did was locate my wallet. I could not believe it, because my card was still in my wallet,” Trongo, a barman at Walmer Country Club, said. The next day, another R1 594 was withdrawn from his account before he could alert his bank to the problem. “Usually when I withdraw money, the SMS notification alerts me to how much money was deducted from my account and where it was deducted. But in this case, there was nothing (about the location). When I informed African Bank, all they said was that they could not investigate because there wasn’t sufficient evidence. This leads me to believe that it’s an inside job,” he said. Other victims who have lost thousands of rands owing to what they say is card cloning took to the Public Servant News Network Eastern Cape page on Facebook, warning residents to be alert while using ATM machines around the city. Jesse Brisley said her mother was robbed
of R3000 after her card was rejected by an ATM machine in Miramar Spar next to Charlo pharmacy. Brisley said after the machine rejected her mother’s card, with an error message stating that the wrong pin had been entered, the card was swallowed at a second attempt with a deduction of R3 000 in her statement. Another report by Jessica Viljoen, stated that her grandparents were robbed of R4 000 in Standard Bank’s ATM at Moffett Retail Park. According to Viljoen, this was not the first incident which had occurred at the same ATM. Standard Bank Media Relations Manager, Sihle Bolani, said the bank took the safety and security of its customers, employees and assets extremely seriously. “Proactive measures are in place to protect ATMs and this is done on a regular and consistent basis. Standard Bank has also initiated many consumer education drives to ensure that consumers are educated and understand the methods that criminals employ,” said Bolani. Janse van Rensburg said during the festive season the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crime Unit conducted ATM Crime Awareness duties at various ATM “hotspots” in Port Elizabeth. She said that 1 600 crime awareness pamphlets concerning ATM Bank card skimming and swopping were distributed. No comment could be obtained from African Bank before PE Express Indaba went to print.
Standard Bank’s advice to ATM machine users:
) If you think the ATM is faulty, cancel the transaction immediately, report the fault to your bank; ) Have your card ready in your hand before you approach the ATM to avoid opening your purse or wallet while in the queue; ) Choose familiar and well-lit ATMs where you are visible and safe. Report any concerns regarding the ATM to the Bank. Toll-free numbers are displayed on all ATMs; ) Be alert to your surroundings. Also take note that fraudsters are often well dressed, well-spoken and respectable looking individuals; ) If you are disturbed or interfered with, whilst transacting at the ATM, your card may be skimmed, by being removed and replaced back into the ATM without your knowledge. Cancel the transaction immediately and report the incident using your bank’s Stop Card Toll free number which is displayed on all ATMs, as well as on the back of your bank card; ) Know what your ATM looks like so that you are able to identify any foreign objects attached to it.
Mayor the first South African to receive international leadership award REPORTER NELSON Mandela Bay Mayor, Benson Fihla recently became the first South African to receive the Global Courageous and Leadership Award from the Rainbow PUSH coalition. “When I was honoured with this special award for my role as a freedom fighter by a trendsetting coalition, founded by Reverend Jesse L Jackson, I did not just accept it on my own behalf. I received it on behalf of those who suffered and in some cases paid the highest price for the political freedom that we achieved in 1994. “Many of the comrades who suffered greatly are from Nelson Mandela Bay as
this area played a leading role in the fight against Apartheid,” Mayor Fihla said. The Rainbow PUSH Coalition which aims to protect, defend, and gain civil rights by levelling the economic and educational playing fields, handed the accolade to Fihla during the 18th Annual Rainbow Push Wall Street Project Economic Summit that took place from January 13 till 15. Mayor Fihla is the second recipient of this prestige award. Representatives from the coalition said the award is given to an individual with a proven record in promoting freedom/self determination and continuous service to humanity. The award is given to any global citizen regardless of race, religion, gender,
ethnicity, or nationality. Mayor Fihla said he hoped that the award would serve as an inspiration for those men and women who still relentlessly worked towards the economic emancipation of the marginalized and the eradication of poverty, inequality and unemployment. The award was handed over by Reverend Jesse L Jackson Sr, Dr Julianne Malveaux, Pat Harris and others. An exhibition entitled ‘The Life and Times of Benson Fihla: Living Legend’ was recently on display at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum, detailing his contribution as a humanitarian, statesman and fearless freedom fighter in the country’s struggle for liberation.

Letter to the Editor Xenophobia – rather get to know others Xenophobic attacks!!! I write this with reference to the recent attacks on foreign-owned shops around the country, particularly in Soweto across all forms of media including BUSINESS TIMES being my favorites. Some say it’s the fear of foreigners, whilst others say it’s the fear of strangers or the unknown. Whatever way in which you define it, xenophobia remains an issue that seeks to deter the life and existence of our welfare. Xenophobia, in my opinion is not a cross-border phenomenon as it is mainly perceived to be, but rather a tribal, ethnic, cultural and pigmentation form of “racism”. Although it can un-
doubtedly be said that people from outside the borders of South Africa suffer the most, it should be borne in mind that such paranoia and distrust also exist among fellow South Africans as well. It is in this context therefore, that I agree with the definition of xenophobia as the fear of strangers and the unfamiliar. South African tertiary institutions particularly NMMU which I attended, can arguably be said to have the most diverse cultural, ethnic and natural set-up of its kind with students from as far as China, Ghana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Botswana etc. Local South African students among themselves boast a rich diversity that ranges from Xhosas, Zulus,
Vendas, Sothos, Tshangangs, Afrikaans and so on and so forth. Unfortunately, each and every one of these groups has its own stereotypes and perception of the other - thus an approach and way of making one’s group seems superior to the other. As a matter of fact, I am very very proud to say that I have friends from uncountable various groups - be it local or international. I am very sure that those of you who happen to be in a similar situation can be able to proclaim and testify that it has educated you a lot about tolerance and acceptance. Wherever you are and whatever you are doing, you are probably asking yourself if
this is possible. Yes it is , that’s if you are willing to. But there is only one piece of advice that can lead us all to that realization and that is: “Do not lean upon your own opinion, but rather get to know others”. IGNORANCE and NEGLIGENCE is a severe illness of the mind and the only way to cure it is to accept and respect fellow human beings not only for what they are or where they come from, but also for who they are. I really hope all readers embrace this with calm and sanity. Kind regards!

Call to help little Sisi get legs NCEBA DLADLA A CARING KwaNobuhle citizen, Sandile Adam, has called on other caring and loving citizens to lend a helping hand to little Siphosethu Ncandana who is living with deformity. Siphosethu (4), who is affectionately known in Ngolwane Street as Sisi, was born with a disability. According to her grandmother, Pinki Ncandana (67), at birth both her legs were short and without toes. One leg was somewhat longer,” said gogo Ncandana. Ncandana’s daughter, Sisi’s mother, had died when Sisi was only a year old. Sisi’s father had also died. Ncandana is a partially blind pensioner who has to look after Sisi and three other grandchildren whose mothers, her children, had also died. The gogo said she had been taking the child to the doctors, hospitals and clinics without help. According to gogo Ncandana, Sisi was a few months old when Livingstone hospital doctors suggested that both her legs be amputated from the knee down “because she was not going to be able to walk,” she explained. Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal employee Adam is amazed at the intelligence and courage Sisi displays. “She walks around the house and plays with other children as though there is no problem at all. Children her age, however, should be at preparatory school. I fear how she would have to walk and run among other children without legs. I hope a good Samaritan finds her prosthetic legs to help her walk,” said Adam. Social Development Department spokesperson Sibabalwe Nkebe, said their office was not aware of Sisi’s condition. “We’ll follow it up and ensure that she gets admitted in one of the child care centres we operate

Azz Veritazz speaks the truth in his Verum Dicere mixtape
ChapterTHREE is back with ‘The Big Reunion’
INDABA REPORTER
Verum Dicere are Latin words used by a jury in the past to mean, “I speak the truth” explained the young man, whose stage name Azz Veritazz means “Know the Truth”. Releasing a mixtape, he said, was a business decision which he took after looking at the direction the music industry was taking. “I promised my fans earlier that I’d be dropping an album, ‘I am moving’ in December, but after serious considerations, and having read the direction that the industry was taking, I thought, hell no, it’s not a good idea. Let me not do it now because every artist is releasing’. We would be competing in the same space and if you’re up and coming like me you might be pushed aside,” he reasoned. But because he had so much to offer musically, the artist – better known as AV - said he decided to release a 10-track mixtape of the music he had already recorded but was not part of the album which he produced. In the mixtape AV features artists like Boni M, Deception, Piddy, Nandisa, VeEG who is an NMMU student original-

It is the best entertaining album that speaks the truth on things and issues that affect us – humanity,” said AV. First female president for NMMU SRC NELSON Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) inaugurated its first female Student Representative Council (SRC) President last week. The SRC President, Hlomela Bucwa, a fourthyear Law student at NMMU and thirteen members of the council were sworn into their positions. In the absence of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Derrick Swartz, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Institutional Support, Dr Sibongile Muthwa addressed the SRC and guests and highlighted how happy she was that the new SRC President is a woman. “It is symbolic that in 2015, a woman is chosen to lead. We are still far from being an equal society. If we look at Africa as a continent, women in general are not positioned to lead,” said Dr Muthwa. The election of the first female president comes ten years after the university’s conception in 2005, when the merger of the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE), PE Technikon and Vista University’s Port Elizabeth campus saw the birth of NMMU. In her augural address, the newly-inducted president highlighted how privileged she felt to be the one who could “turn the pages of transformation in South Africa”. “We look to be a dynamic and transformational SRC that represents the best interests of the students,” said Hlomela in outlining the SRC’s mission and vision for the year. The eloquent speaker also expressed her disdain at the handling of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) by the university and lamented seeing academically-deserving students being sent home because they could not afford tuition. “This is not in line with the university’s humanising pedagogy in the classroom,” she said adding, however, that the SRC favoured an integrated approach which would see them work with university management. This meant the SRC would, for example, also seek policy reform by influencing policies that were in the best interests of students.

FOCUS ON: WORLD CANCER DAY, FEBRUARY 4
Unmasking cancer myths WORLD Cancer Day held on February 4, each year aims to create awareness about cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection and treatment. One in six men and one in seven women in South Africa will get cancer in their lives. But Life Healthcare said there are still many people who do not know about it, and myths make detection and treatment trickier. Life Healthcare unravels the myths about the disease as myths can cost lives. MYTH: IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO PREVENT CANCER FACT: Around 60 percent of cancers may not be preventable, but that means around 40 percent are, says Professor Michael Herbst, Head of Health for the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA). You can cut your risk considerably by avoiding tobacco, excess alcohol and sunburn; eating healthily; exercising regularly and going for routine screenings. Also take advantage of vaccinations against cancercausing viruses. CANSA advises a human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for all girls reaching puberty to protect against cervical cancer. MYTH: SKIN CANCER ONLY AFFECTS WHITE SKINS FACT: Skin cancer is more common in people with pale complexions, which have less protective melanin, but anyone can get it, said Dr Duvern Ramiah, a specialist radiation oncologist at Life Fourways Hospital in Johannesburg. UVA radiation damages cell DNA, causing mutations that can lead to malignant melanoma, the most dangerous skin cancer. Whatever your skin colour, avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm. Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before exposure, and reapply every two hours or after swimming, towelling or sweating. If you’re fair, use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 50; and at least SPF 20 for other skin

types. CANSA also advises sun hats and sunglasses with UV 400 protection. MYTH: CANCER IS A DEATH SENTENCE FACT: Cancer is a serious disease and can be fatal, but with breakthroughs in prevention, early diagnosis and more specific treatments, it’s becoming increasingly manageable, says Dr Ramiah. Professor Herbst reports that around 40 percent of adult cancer cases and 60 percent of childhood ones are successfully treated. MYTH: IF YOU’VE SMOKED HEAVILY FOR YEARS, THE DAMAGE IS DONE FACT: It’s never too late to stop, says Dr Ramiah. Even for heavy smokers, the benefits will begin immediately. Within 20 minutes of stubbing out your last cigarette, heart rate and blood pressure will drop. In one to nine months coughing and shortness of breath will improve, and in five years your risk of mouth, throat, oesophagus and bladder cancer will be halved, says Professor Herbst. Your risk of cervical cancer will resemble that of a non-smoker. MYTH: SMOKING JUST TWO CIGARETTES A DAY, OR USING A HUBBLY BUBBLY, CHEWING TOBACCO OR SNUFF IS SAFE FACT: Even one cigarette can paralyse the tiny hairs that propel mucus from your lungs, slowing the removal of impurities that can cause lung disease, says Professor Herbst. The smoke from hubbly-bubblies (also called ‘hookahs’) contains toxins known to cause lung cancer and other diseases, and a typical hubblybubbly pipe session of 20 minutes can expose you to as much nicotine as 100 cigarettes, and far more tar and carbon monoxide. Chewing tobacco and snuff also contain addictive nicotine and carcinogens, he says. – REPORTER

Provincial sports conference a resounding success NCEBA DLADLA THE Eastern Cape Department of Sport and Recreation had a very successful Conference at the Boardwalk ICC from Wednesday 28 to Friday 30 January. The conference, according to the department’s provincial General Manager Deidre Sedras, put sport and recreation stakeholders including all sport federations, the EC Sports Confederation, the EC Sport Academy, school sport representatives, government departments, public entities and NGOs under one roof, to come up with a blueprint that would identify key priorities and give a three-year strategy to sport and recreation in the province. “The conference was a resounding success,” an upbeat Sedras said, adding that there was enough delegate representation. They also concluded resolutions in the eight
key areas. The fact that all municipalities were represented through their Municipal Managers as well as South African Local Government Associations (SALGA), Sedras believed, not only helped the conference reach its main objectives, but also ensured that the province, which was part of the international community, worked as a united entity. MEC Pemmy Majodina called the delegates to consolidate what was already there and find a critical pathway for the athletes to ensure that they succeeded in competitions against athletes from other cities of the world. Deputy Minister Henrietta Bogopane-Zulu advised the delegates always to ensure that people with disabilities were also included and in fact in the centre of their planning. A Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of Sport and Recreation and the Department of Education was thrashed out to the satisfaction of Khithika Lakhithika,
the OR Tambo District Municipality Sports and Recreation Officer. “We sometimes struggle to get school children in sport because the schools don’t see the need. We now hope with this partnership, things will be different in the rural and vast area of Mount Ayliff,” said Lakhithika, adding that she hoped parents would also be engaged to allow children to play; and that they too played for a healthy lifestyle. A Resolution Committee chaired by Sedras was appointed and given a task of completing, validating and ensuring the implementation of the resolutions on issues like school sport, community sport, academies of sport, infrastructure and the economic value of sport, among other things. To ensure that these were implemented Sedras said sub-committees would be tasked with assessing the work in progress on an annual basis, and to give a report at another conference in three years’ time.
The EC’s Dept of Sport and Recreation General Manager Deidre Sedras believes the province is on the right track with its plan.

Only one Bay side wins in ABC Motsepe Second Division SELBY MADIKANE REAL City remained the only side in the Nelson Mandela Bay region to have tasted victory in ABC Motsepe Second Division games on Saturday. City added more worries to the beleaguered Tembu Royals when they defeated them 2 - 0 at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium. Two other outfits, Highbury and SUBS, did not collect maximum points when they played away games. Highbury were held to a 2 - 2 draw by the new comers La Liga while SUBS suffered a 2 - 1 defeat to Matta Milan in Butterworth. JB Milan continued to let down their loyal supporters when they were thwarted 3 - 0 by Zimbane Killers in their back yard – Tokyo Sexwale Stadium in Jeffreys Bay.

Open boxing promises medals in Rio Olympics NCEBA DLADLA THE future of South African open boxing, which is an Olympic sport, looks very bright. This became evident at the national boxing federation SANABO workshop held at Pine Lodge in Port Elizabeth at the weekend. Themed “On the Road to Rio, 2016,” the workshop called together SANABO executive members, provincial secretaries as the engines of the organisations, and experts in law, medicine, marketing, media and public relations in order to restore the status and pride of SANABO. SANABO is an organisation whose development and performance duties were gauged through their identifying and fine-tuning of raw talent that graduates to become world-beaters professionally, said president Andile Mofu. Mofu introduced Botswana Boxing Association president Dr Thato Patlakwe who also graced the occasion as a partner to SANABO in the Zone 4 Africa Boxing League. The workshop, Mofu said, was about the boxer. He said it also aimed at bringing SANABO closer to the people. He urged secretaries to urge
other boxing stakeholders to take their responsibilities seriously to ensure that South Africa brought more medals from the Rio Olympics in 2016. “SANABO should continue to produce good boxers that would compete among the best in the world, even if we do not get recognition from authorities, at times,” said ECABO president Vido Mtekwana, adding that sport had an intrinsic value of providing athletes with longevity and purpose. “To evaluate ourselves, we must compete with the best. That means we have to do away with quotas but focus on transformation which must look into administration,” said EC Sports Confederation President Khusta Magada, who addressed the gathering on behalf of the MEC of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Pemmy Majodina, who could not attend owing to other pressing commitments. SANABO looked into its own administration in the workshop and devised ways in which it could improve. Medical doctors Gino Mkhwanazi and Luvuyo Bayeni were among those that worked out a strategy to ensure the safety of boxers in their commission.
Attendees of the SANABO workshop held at the Pine Lodge in Port Elizabeth on Saturday included the executive, provincial scribes and experts on law, medicine, media and administration.

Surprises for top guns in SAB League SELBY MADIKANE SUPPORTERS of the SAFA NMB SAB Regional League’s top sides saw their sides caught by surprise when they were up against the socalled small teams on Saturday. Log-leaders Young Ideas could not believe that their game would end in the 2-2 draw when they faced the struggling Hotspurs in their own slaughter-house which is Motherwell NU 9 Stadium. In another surprise draw Royal Bucs who were tipped as favourites failed to beat other strugglers Camper United who held them in a goalless draw. Showvillage also gave the
high-riding Callies a 4-3 hiding. Other title-chasers Lion City had to dig deep to secure a hard-fought 1-1 away draw when they took on the buoyant Fairview Rovers in Finnis Grounds. Central Acemates were not peaceful in their 2-1 win over Peace United. Motherwell Academy registered a 5-1 outright victory over Despatch Pioneers. Ghetto Stars went down 2-1 to Island City while Ikamva Movers continued to drop valuable points in 2-1 away loss to Highland Spurs at Jabavu Stadium.
RED City, affectionately known as Umzobomvu, drubbed NEBFA Sedgars Sport Premier League defending champions Dodgers 3 - 0 in their game at Dodger’s Field on Sunday. City showed that they were not palookas when they punished Dodgers. City demonstrated their never-die- spirit when they dictated terms. Dodgers’ coach was left frustrated by his side’s dismal performance. Winter Rose dimmed Black Stars when they defeated them 9 - 1. PE Sundowns could not go pound for pound when they lost 2 - 0 to CCX Callies. Stinging Bees also played to a 1 - 1 draw with Boast Pirates. Friendly City secured a 3 - 0 win over City Defenders while Eastern Jumpers had a 1 - 0 beating of Real White City.
Young Ideas star player Freedom Funani is fouled by a Showvillage player.
