‘Culture not lost’ with clinic circumcision

ITH over 2 314 illegal initiations and 40 deaths recorded by the health department last year in initiations across the province, the Circumcision Clinic at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University says their service is becoming the preferred way for Xhosa boys to journey into manhood. NMMU circumcision clinics nurse, Mziwoxolo Mbangi, said since the inception of the clinic in 2012, there has been a huge demand

But it is not about that; it is about fighting the HIV/ AIDS epidemic,” he added. In a closed briefing with his office last year, MEC for Health in the Eastern Cape, Sicelo Gqobana, said they had deployed task teams to deal with the scourge of deaths due to the practice. Gqobana said in June 2013, 12 169 legal initiations were carried out in that month while 2 314 illegal initiations occurred. There were 359 hospital admissions arising out of the initiations. A total of 24 cases led to amputations, 40 deaths occurred but only 19 arrests were made as a re-

Mbangi said they expected this year alone to receive over 50 students as patients, explaining that because of their limited facilities they could not offer their health care to as many as they would like. “We expect more than 50 students. We don’t want to do a lot of students at once because we want to give quality service to each student. We try to do one campaign each semester which makes it twice a year. In future we will try and do more than that because of the demand from the students,” he added. Despite the safer health care given to student initiates at the clinic, Mbangi said it had been

Mbangi advises those who wished to be initiated traditionally to get proper health education. “They can come to us for just general checkups, to see if they are in good health to go for circumcision, and we are willing to offer them an HIV test too,” he said. Vuku Primary teachers look after pupil’s welfare NCEBA DLADLA STRUGGLING New Brighton families whose children attend David Vuku Public Primary School celebrated a good gesture by the school’s Welfare Committee which gave their needy children school uniforms last Wednesday.

About 50 children from Grade R to Grade 7 received uniforms from teachers in the presence of some of very happy parents at the school. This was made possible by teachers and SEKI, a Non-profit-making-Organisation (NPO) working in the local community,’ “We are giving our needy children school uniforms today in order to help them look good like all the others,” said school principal Nosisana Melwa. She added, “As teachers we have a social responsibility to look after the welfare of our chil-
dren. So we did the ground work and collected the data on needy children in our school.” According to Melwa, David Vuku Public Primary School has a long list of orphaned and vulnerable children. Some of those children come to school on empty stomachs. She said the unemployment rate in the area is very high and as teachers they saw a dire need to do something as well as ask for sponsorship. “But today, it is from us and the NPO Seki,” said Melwa, adding that they wished that other organisations could join them by extending a helping hand to make a difference in the lives of needy children in their school - children whose families were struggling to make ends meet. Gogo Lulama Vumendlini (63) thanked the teachers for the assistance which benefited her grandchild while a Grade 2 pupil Mhlana Mfika (8) said, “I am happy and want to thank my teachers.”
Jarvis Gqamlana Public School needs security against vandals NCEBA DLADLA CONTINUOUS vandalism of Jarvis Gqamlana Public Primary School in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth has prompted the stakeholders of the school to call for help. “Our school has been a target of vandalism since January 2012. This is happening every week. It is worse during school holidays,” said acting school principal Lungisile Gqasana.
Gqasana said that during school holidays, the house of the caretaker of the school who is a School Governing Body (SGB) member who is not even paid to look after the school, was torched. The man, Mlingani Zamisa, believes the burning down of the house was a deliberate attempt by the evil-doers to silence him so that they could continue to break in and ransack the school. A case was opened with the police but nobody has been arrested to date.

“Without the security the caretaker provided, the school has now become the target of vandals who steal everything from computers, television-sets, and dvd players to doors, windows and window-frames. This is a huge problem,” said Gqasana. Last year they lost computers, a Plasma TV and DVDs recently sponsored by Ellerines Furnishers. Head of Department (HOD) Noluthando Sokutu lost valuable items and some of their teaching materials in the school’s break-ins which has become a weekly occurence. “Our Computer Lab does not exist any more, while pupils themselves lose books, pencils and pens to this act of vandalism which makes the environment not conducive for teaching and learning,” said Sokutu. Gqasana said the School
Management Team and the SGB resolved last week to contact PE Express Indaba to ask Good Samaritans for help. “We need security or at least the provision of a night watchman in order to save the pupils, teachers and parents who bring their children here to get education,” said Gqasana. “With broken windows you can imagine how poor the attendance becomes during chilly winter-days. We are witnessing a drop in our numbers as a result of this. Parents are taking their children out of this school.”

FAW doors soon to open creating jobs REPORTER OVER 100 local job opportunities are available for residents at the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) investor First Automotive Works (FAW) South Africa at its newly finished plant in Zone 2 of the IDZ. The Coega Development Corporation (CDC) said they had been intimately involved in the recruitment and selection process of employees at the FAW South Africa assembly plant through its specialised unit for recruitment and placements, Coega Human Capital Solutions (HCS). A total of 619 people were employed during the construction phase and FAW expects to employ mostly local people in the first operational phase. Coega and FAW have also been engaging the surrounding communities in the Motherwell area and around the city since last year to discuss opportunities on the FAW project. Coega boasts an average of 85% local employment rate on IDZ projects, a figure which has been consistent for a number of years now, says Dr Ayanda Vilakazi, CDC head of marketing and communication. HCS also runs several programmes to mitigate the gap between the skills demanded by investors and the skills supply in the region. “Investors want to employ skilled workers – and HCS has taken on the role of not only recruiting these potential employees, but en-
suring they have the requisite skills for the job at hand. “This is achieved through various skills development initiatives, including artisan training . We are basically offering total solutions to investors so that jobs are matched with skills,” head of the HCS recruitment unit, Duncan Grenfell,. “The training programme is one of Coega’s attempts to ensure that local skills development takes place, but there is a dual responsibility. Job seekers also need to ensure they meet the basic requirements for entering the training interventions, namely having school leaving qualifications with the right subject choices and coming with the right work ethic,” added Grenfell. Grenfell said official adverts for FAW job vacancies were posted on the Coega G2O recruitment system accessible at www.g2o.co.za, various print media and on social media since January 2014. They strongly recommend everybody to follow Coega on Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn and the CDC website. The pool of candidates who responded to the initial adverts were shortlisted and called to attend briefing sessions and taken through a work readiness training programme to enhance their chances of employment Grenfell said. “At this point we are planning to take the applicants through a series of assessments after which the final shortlist of candidates will be forwarded for final interview with the client.”

Police and tavern-owners address community fears “THE South African Police Service (SAPS) realises how fear reigns supreme among members of the community since criminals rule the streets by a barrel of a gun,” said Major General Zamuthango Mki. Mki was addressing tavern-owners in the Motherwell Cluster and members of the media during a meeting called by the SAPS at Nangoza Jebe Community Hall in New Brighton. The meeting, which was attended by over 100 people, was arranged following the fatal shooting of three men at Chippa’s Tavern in Nibe Street recently. Four people were seriously injured. The latest tavern shooting was the fourth in the space of two weeks in the area. Police have confiscated at least nine unlicensed firearms in the area. During the meeting tavern owners
said they were concerned about the fact that the meeting was also attended by people who were not tavern owners. They feared that they could be murderers who could be targetting them next. They called on the police for better visibility and demanded that the police go back to doing random searches for drugs and illegal firearms in taverns. Thozamile Fumbeza of the Bay Taverners Association said it would be better if a meeting between police and tavern-owners only would be held so that they can make contributions about what they thought were real problems in the community. “We agree with you. But this must be clear. We cannot allow our communities to be governed and controlled by thugs. Thugs can’t rule over government! They must know, we are sick and tired of see-

Church leaders call for RDP of the Soul NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the Interdenominational African Ministers Association of Southern Africa (IDAMASA) in the Eastern Cape Chapter have also voiced their concern about the rampant shooting and killing in township taverns which is causing so much fear among residents. The clerics think that there is a need for moral regeneration which must be preceded by the rebuilding of family units. “We are concerned. We cannot be silent while our people are killing one another like this,” said IDAMA-
SA President Bishop Sandile Jika. Bishop Jika questioned the wisdom of young people choosing to watch football games in taverns whereas there were homes in their neighbourhood with satellite dishes - where they could watch their games of choice comfortably. “Our children go to these taverns to drink. That is the truth which we must understand and be honest about,” said Jika. “The problem is that we didn’t work on morality in this country post 1994,” said Canon Mcebisi Xundu. He explained, “Before 1994 we taught our children to go to town and take whatever it was they
wanted, saying they were repossessing from the White man. In the 1976 uprising we saw our youth taking charge of change and that in the process changed family life as we knew it. What we need now is what Madiba said was the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) of the soul. “The church must bring along pastoral care programmes to help society from the mire of organic crises that it was in”, said Xunsu. “To do it, we need wisdom with all hands on deck. Families, the church, schools and politicians must work together,” said Bishop Welcome Fanapi.

The party was also in honour of teacher Nosipho Mbengashe who was changing schools. Principal Yako said her school was regarded as one of the best in the township because of the calibre of teachers she was parting with. “These teachers were hands-on in the school garden, sports as well as other extra-mural activities. They went beyond duty calls, as caring mothers, in assisting poor children from the school,” said Yako. Department of Education PE Circuit Manager Douglas Mlungisi Rwentela was the guest speaker and talked about the need for the teachers’ commitment to education and the liberation of the black child. “I am speaking with mixed feelings because like the general of an
army, I am parting with great teachers and colleagues who are leaving the profession with their heads held-up high,” said Rwentela of the teachers whose records of service was between 28 and 40 years. According to Rwentela, if the retirees were playing cricket, “We’d say they hit their sixes and fours, staying on course while some young teachers decided to apply to be boarded - and are now frustrated and want to come back to teaching.” He said owing to these teachers’ hard work, Enkwenkwezini produced pupils who could read and write. “It is a crisis and also a crime for schools to produce children who can’t read and write,” said Rwentela.

Teaching needs to be higher priority NCEBA DLADLA A FREE and democratic South Africa was lambasted for making participation in politics a higher priority than getting a higher education. This was done by Department of Education PE Circuit Manager, Mlungisi Rwentela, who was speaking at a farewell function of seven retired teachers of Enkwenkwezini Public Primary School held at NU2 Motherwell Community Hall recently. “It is only in South Africa today that involvement in politics surpassed the need for one to aspire for higher education,” he said. “While teaching is the mother of all the professions, it was the most disrespected profession in the country right now. I don’t know why,” he said. “Other countries of the world respected teachers and paid them handsomely,” said Rwentela, adding that in South Africa, however, the converse was true, as the salaries of teachers were not very attractive. “Teachers are not well-paid civil servants. That’s why we see a brain-drain with many teachers quitting the profession in order to take up roles as councillors, for instance,” said Rwentela, a Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University LLB student who celebrated his 60th birthday last year. “Our priorities in this country are very skewed. You can’t pay politicians more than teachers.
Some of the children you (elderly) teachers taught earn much more than you do as councillors and mayors - some with way less education than you have. Our country needs to change,” said Rwentela. Rwentela, who is a married father and grandfather, is armed with a BA and Higher Diploma in Education (HDE) from Fort Hare Univeristy, BA (Hon) in English from Rhodes University, and a Labour Law Diploma from the Graduate Institute of Technology. He encouraged teachers not to give up.

“We have been running Nal’ibali reading clubs in Uitenhage since July last year and have seen an increasing interest from adults in both clubs and in their children’s literacy development,” said Puwe, who was a little disappointed in the turnout of parents. Through the Charter on Literacy Rights they were now able to offer parents, grandparents and care-givers of the children who attend Na’ibali, practical guidelines that would further support them. The Charter, facilitated by the Project for Alternative Education Studies in South Africa (PRAESA), with 20 years of experience in community reading clubs and early literacy development, is freely available in all 11 official languages as a poster or a download, said Puwe. Puwe challenged parents to monitor and guide children’s television watching. He said time spent reading will bring more rewards than time watching the gogglebox. Candle light vigil and prayer for African peace THE Community of African Nationals In South Africa (CANISA) held a candle light vigil and prayer meeting in front of the City Hall in Port Elizabeth last Friday. CANISA was formed in November 2013 by African Nationals finding refuge in South Africa. They meet once a week in the Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism Building in Walmer Boulevard to pray for this continent of Africa. “We are here to pray for peace and unity in Africa. We need unity to fight against child abuse, women abuse, human trafficking, hatred, intolerance and the wars that are ravaging our beautiful land,” said CANISA Vice President Maria Nyagwachi, a Kenyan National. According to Nyagwachi, the prayer meeting, who was also at-
tended by South Africans including NMMU students, was also for the freeing of little girls held captive by the Boko Haram of Nigeria. CANISA believed that there was an evil spirit trying to destroy Africa and they thought that it could be overcome by the power and efficacy of prayer. Their hope, she said, was that God would perform a miracle to save the Africans from evil, the bondage of slavery and oppression. “We pray for Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa’s development,” said Nyagwachi, adding that there were already 23 High Commissioners that were in support of CANISA. She was hoping that all 55 African countries would be members in the not-too-distant future.

Closely contested Premier League games THE past weekend saw some closely contested Premier League games. Last Friday night at The Valley unbeaten Hearts defeated Warriors 2-1. Jason van Wyk scored from 25 metres out after heavy pressure on the Warriors defence. Hearts then went 2 nil up when Robert Yuill scored his 7th field goal of the season. Jason van Wyk assisted Yuill from deep in Hearts’ own half. Late in the second half Shane de Boer pulled one goal back for Warriors from the penalty mark. Hearts’ defence held strongly in the second half. Vodacom NMMU Madibaz at the NMMU South Campus last Friday night beat NMB Municipality 3-nil. In the second half Claudius Sagandira and Zukisani Mtendeni confirmed Madibaz’s win with a goal each. On Saturday Highbury overcame PE Defence 2-nil in Bridgemead. At Victoria Park Motherwell Academy completed a deserved 3-2 win over PE Homerovers. Aphiwe Mngolombane and Paul Bravo scored for Homerovers. At the Oval Forresters fought hard to overcome home team Central Acemates in a 1-nil win. It was a very even game with Ayanda Mthethwa scoring for Forresters deep in the second half. Last Sunday improving Callies beat KwaDwesi All Stars 5-3 at Londt Park. KwaDwesi’s goals came from Khanyiso Bacela, Siyakeliswa Funde and Achuma Klaas. For Callies Sheniel Benn helped himself to a hat trick, and Razaan Safedien and Luvuyo Bika a goal each. St George’s Aces beat the Priory Rangers by 2 goals to nil, with Matts Mock finding the net yet again for the Aces. The all girls team Callies Saltires went down by 2 goals to nil to the St George’s Braves, with Daniel van den Berg scoring both goals for St Georges, ably assisted by young St George’s striker David Reid. The Callies Thistles beat Priory United 2-0. In a crunch game in the u 11 Division, Callies A came head to head with PE City, winning a close contest 1-0 with a first half penalty by Jaden Prinsloo, retaining their position as log leaders. The St George’s Aces went down by 3 goals to 1 against Mabayibone FC from Walmer, pushing Mabayibone into second place on the log while Priory comfortably beat Callies B 8-0. In the u 15 Division the St George’s Colts lost narrowly to Golden Stars 5-4 in an action packed display of Junior football. Motherwell Academy and Hearts Eagles both won their games as expected against KwaDwesi and Callies B respectively by 5 goals to nil. Callies A beat Highbury 4-1 with goals by Reece Collins, Taufeequ Loonat and Calvin Staisch. In the u 17 Division , St George’s beat NMMU comfortably by 6 goals to nil with St Georges centre-back Liam Broek finding the net yet again with another brilliant header. Motherwell Academy beat Callies convincingly in a 4-1 win at Victoria Park Sports Club, retaining their position at the top of the log, while United Brothers beat Highbury 4-2 at Bridgemead.

SELBY MADIKANE IKAMVA Movers clinched the MOFA Build It Premier League title with their goalscoring trio scoring crucial goals in their 3-1 victory over Shining Stars at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on 31 May 2014. Shining Stars defenders were caught napping in the third minute of the game when Movers striker Sithembele Yako scored their first goal. Stars came back strongly in so far as that their defender Sinethemba Zinara Peter headed home an equalising goal to silence Movers supporters in the 15 th minute. It was evident that both sides wanted to score goals but the first stanza ended in a 1-1 draw. The tempo of the game in the second stanza was higher than in the first stanza. Mbuyekezo Somtsewu, the man of the match, delivered a perfect pass to Mbongeni Cadre Yako who scored Movers’ second goal in the 59 th minute. Shortly after Movers’ second goal Stars prospect Siyanda Gattuso
Mani went for an early shower after he was adjudged by the match official to have tackled Mbongeni dangerously from behind. Stars were badly affected as Mani was their pillar at the right side. With five minutes to go Mbongeni delivered a nifty pass to Ayanda Manengele whose goal rubbed salt into Stars’ wounds. Tottenham Spurs ended their relegation worries when they beat Lion Stars 3-1 from a goal down.
