Springbok 7s players say yes to their investment NCEBA DLADLA
W
HILE Sevens rugby fever is hotting up in Nelson Mandela Bay, two members of the Springbok 7s team last week took time out from their training to visit the Ubuntu Education Fund in Zwide township to see the work that is being done as part of Absa Bank and the Springbok 7s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) Projects initiative which benefited Community-based Organisations involved in poverty alleviation, education and health promotion. Paul Delport and Seabelo Senatla visited this professionally managed institution which brings a glimmer of hope in a hopeless situation. According to Absa CSI Project Coordinator, Andy de la Mare, this partnership started in 2011 with the Springbok 7s series in Nelson Mandela Bay, with Absa donating R50 000 to Ubuntu Education Fund. “In 2012 we again donated R50 000 to Ubuntu but the players did not get an opportunity to come and see for themselves the investment they were putting in. We thought that it was important that they came and saw the difference that they were making in this community through their donations,” said de la Mare. He added that the other institution that benefited from the Absa-Springbok 7s’ good gesture was Gqebera Small Projects. This was an NGO which supports Orphaned and Vulnerable Children (OVC), gives out interim food parcels, assists in education and starting of food gardens by pupils for food security in Walmer Township. “Being here is awesome,” said Senatla, who hails from Welkom in the Free State. “We are happy to see the good work that this organisation (Ubuntu) is doing - that of changing the lives of children from the township for the better.
With this kind of work, lives will be changed and this area will become a better place,” said Senatla. Apart from all the action on the field during the HSBC IRB Sevens World Series, there will also be plenty of action off the field with
top entertainment for the whole family at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium throughout the weekend of December 7 and 8. Top musicians, Aggreko Cheerleaders, beat-battling DJs, and crazy cool MCs is set to keep the excitement levels at fever pitch
at the HSBC IRB Sevens World Series To entertain the crowd will be Jeremy Loops, Crazy White Boy, 1st Project, with a battle of the DJs. Tickets are available for R50 at Computicket.
Zahara in the Bay
South Africa’s renowned female guitarist, song writer and poet Zahara will be at the Boardwalk on the Festival Lawn to promote her latest album Phendula this Saturday. The show starts at 2pm and tickets are still available at Computicket at R150 per person. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

New Brighton toddlers receive mattresses and blankets NCEBA DLADLA SOCIAL Development Department donated mattresses and blankets to two Port Elizabeth based creches last Thursday. Both needy institutions from New Brighton, Ekhaya Daycare Centre in Avenue B and Lukhanyiso Creche and Pre-school in Ntshekisa Road, received the gifts they said will make a lot of difference in the lives of the children they taught - who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. “We want to thank Social Development Department for this good gesture. This is going to make a whole lot of difference,” said Lukhanyiso Creche and Pre-school principal Nomonde Kanti. Kanti also commended mama Mavis Bolana of the Bantu Church of Christ for pleading with the department on their behalf, adding that all 50 of their children would have a bed to sleep on compared to the 15 they had previously. “We won’t be scared of winter anymore. We’ve got enough blankets to cover and warm our children,” she said with glow. A parent, Ntombentsha Monqo said she was overjoyed by the good gesture from the Social Development Department because the school was doing good work for their children and
grandchildren. “Early Childhood Development (ECD) is government’s priority,” said Nelson Mandela Bay Social Development District Manager Thembile Ngqabayi. His Department, Ngqabayi said, develops interest in children from birth to four years. He explained, “It has been established through research that children in ECD do well in formal education compared to those who did not go through ECD.” “The other reason of course is that children from the black communities usually come from institutions with dilapidated structures or in some cases no structures at all because of poverty.” Access to education, according to Ngqabayi, cannot depend on whether the family is well to do or not. “In fact, we cannot condemn children from poor backgrounds to inferior education. That is why we were compelled to assist, especially that the church leader Mama Bolana called us to attention, said Ngqabayi. “This is an important day for these toddlers. I saw their need and asked for assistance. To the department I say, blessed is the hand that giveth,” mama Bolana said, adding that she was aware of the high demands of children in kindergarten who need so much to in their nurturing and education.

Residents have their say on how to end genderbased violence PE Express Indaba Reporter NCEBA DLADLA asked Nelson Mandela Bay residents what they thought could end gender based violence. And this is what they had to say: ) “Government must work hard to create jobs to keep people busy. Abuse, especially against the elderly is caused by the unemployed youth who depend on the older person’s grant money,” said Leli Zweni of Kwazakhele. Leli is a Social Worker working with the elderly at Hoza. ) Ntsikelelo Khaka of Kuyga believes “A harsh sentence like hanging could deter murderers, rapists and abusers criminals. They do what they like now because they fear nothing!” ) “Bring back hanging, you’ll see. These criminals enjoy imprisonment at St Albans prison. They say they are enjoying eating South African people’s tax,” said Kuyga’s Phillip Vulambete, adding that he wished government could create more jobs and not give opportunities to foreigners at the expense of South Africans. ) William Louw of Kuyga believes that “Death sentence could rid this country of violence of any kind. Those who rape and kill especially children must face the death penalty!” ) Kuyga’s Thembisa Maseti said, “People should work hand in hand with the police. Abuse and violence of any kind should be reported and harsh sentences be meted out against those found guilty by a court of law.” ) “Government should tighten up the laws and abusers should not get bail,” said Nosiphiwo George of Kuyga. ) “I am a victim of abuse and gender-based violence myself. I want this to end but I just don’t know what must be done to end it,” said Yolanda Nxuseka of Motherwell.
) The main problem is hunger, according to Zoleka Ntsele of Veeplaas- a hungry stomach knows no morals. She said, “I would like to see government introducing programmes that could keep people busy because this violence against women and children is caused by people who are frustrated because they can’t find positive things to do.” ) “Burn the perpetrators. Make an example and the rest will know that you mean business. They (criminals) go to jail and come back to do the same thing again,” said Ndilisa Mbethe of KwaNobuhle. ) This gender-based violence won’t stop, according to KwaNobuhle’s Yekiwe Tyatya “Unless we castrate the rapists and cut the hands of those who bash women and children. Take away what is wrong.”
