Woman in court after child burnt with hot water NCEBA DLADLA
A
26 year-old woman from Zwide Township in Port Elizabeth was arrested for Assault (Grievous Bodily Harm) on Friday after both feet of a three year-old toddler in her care were burnt with boiling water the previous Monday. Police spokeperson Warrant Officer Thembi Gwe confirmed the arrest. The teacher, Siphokazi Dlawu (26), appeared in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was released on warning after being charged. The incident happened at Zwide Pre-Primary School, an Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre where the boy is a pupil. According to Dora Nginza Principal Social Worker Pamela Rubushe, the child, Siyamthanda Tyika, was admitted and treated at the hospital for being burnt in hot water while having a bath at the pre-school. Siyamthanda’s grandmother Nomabali Tyika (60) of Yoyo Street, Zwide described how she was phoned by Siyamthanda’s mother Babalwa on Monday, telling her that the child had burn wounds. Babalwa heard that he was rushed to Dora Nginza hospital. “I could not believe it because Siyamthanda was at school to learn. How could he be burnt (in boiling water) and sent to hospital?” the visibly distraught gogo asked. Nomabali was not satisfied with the answers she received from the institution. “The principal said Siyamthanda soiled himself and was taken by a teacher for a bath. Apparently the teacher poured the boiling water into the basin and left the child in the bathroom, allegedly to fetch cold wa-
ter to mix it with the hot water,” said Nomabali, adding that the teachers saw the damage only after hearing the screams of the little boy. “We, however, do not accept their explanation. A child cannot burn two feet with hot water. We would understand if it was just one foot. Why both feet?” she asked, adding that this was not the first time her grandson complained about the school, and especially that teacher. Siyamthanda allegedly once complained that the teacher locked him
‘This is negligence at its best. And, it looks like deliberate abuse,’ said Pamela Rubushe, Dora Nginza Principal Social Worker in the very dark store-room until he cried for help “This is negligence at its best. And, it looks like deliberate abuse,” said Rubushe, adding that she wrote a letter to inform police and the Social Development Department for investigation. The school principal Noluthando Dlawu confirmed that the incident did happen. She was, however, not there, she said. “We apologised to Siyamthanda’s family for what happened. It’s an unfortunate incident by a particular person and not the school as an institution. I am very disappointed and hurt by what happened, “ said Dlawu. She added, “We chastised the teacher and gave her a warning for what she did, which was a huge mistake.”

Cllr Mkavu’s Memorial Service at Allanridge Hall in Rosedale tomorrow NCEBA DLADLA THE memorial service for the murdered Councillor Buyisile Mkavu (41) will be held at Allenridge Community Hall in Rosedale tomorrow (Thursday) August 7 at 4pm.
deployed in the metro, they had regular interaction with the late Mkavu and her office was “impressed with his dedication to uplift the poor from poverty and provide decent shelter to the destitute.” Cllr Mkavu’s uprightness and leadership will be sorely missed. He had an uncompromising commitment to the rule of law, according to the MEC. “Mkavu died at a critical time for the municipality when a process to give full accreditation to the municipality is underway.” Mkavu leaves behind his wife Limise. A service for his burial will be held at the Allanridge Community Hall in Rosedale on Saturday August 9, starting at 9am. He will be laid to rest at the Jubilee Cemetery.
Described by Nelson Mandela Bay Executive mayor Benson Fihla as young, dynamic and vibrant, Mayoral Committee member Mkavu, who headed the Human Settlements Portfolio Committee, was gunned down by unknown assailants in Mlawu Street, in an area called Angola, KwaNobuhle on Saturday August 2 around 9pm. His untimely death was a sad loss to the ANC and the entire metropolitan municipality, according to Human Settlements MEC, Helen Sauls-August and mayor Fihla. “Mkavu easily went beyond the call of duty by trying to facilitate cordial relations with the community and recently went as far as to lead negotiations with the Chatty community when violence spread owing to unhappiness with the progress at an Eastern Cape Provincial Department of Human Settlements project,” said Cllr Fihla. Mkavu was one of the young leaders who were catapulted to prominence after the May 2011 elections. He joined the Mayoral Committee in March 2013 and is known for, among other projects, having spearheaded the acquisition of land for the Walmer/Gqebera community and other pockets of land across the metro during his “ruthlessly cut short” tenure as the Whip for Human Settlements. Big plans for Greenacres Centre LASHEIGH LUCAS
ONE of the oldest shopping centres in Port Elizabeth will have a new modern look and feel after upgrades worth R300 million are implemented. Greenacres Shopping Centre has traded above national average trading densities and has also maintained a 100% occupancy. This performance, along with the need of major and national tenants to expand their footprint, motivated the new owners from Acucap by Liberty to embark on a mall expansion and upgrade. “The retail environment has changed in the Bay, with developments at Walmer Park and Kenako Mall (in NewBrighton),” said executive director from Acucap, Jonathan Rens. The planned phased expansion will kickstart early in August with phase 1, which includes a vibrant new food court and a range of shops that will appeal to connected people on the go. The new food court will have popular reinvented food brands and will open towards the end of April 2015. The food court will be turned into a multi-level environment with big screens, entertainment and more light. Wimpy will present a new look that has not yet been seen in South Africa; Cassies will showcase their latest look and feel; Steers and Debonairs will flaunt their new combo store look. This is after two Grade 3 pupils aged 9 and 10 found an abandoned new-born baby in the toilet, said principal Patrick Moko. According to the principal, the children told their teacher after this gruesome find of a new-born baby wrapped in a towel in the toilet around 9am on Wednesday. “The concerned teacher went to investigate and found the lifeless body of the child,” said Moko, adding that the chil-
dren were visibly distressed. The school authorities phoned police and the district office to inform them of the incident. The principal said there had been chaos for a moment in the classes of the two children until teachers talked to them. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basil Seekoei confirmed the incident. He said, “We have opened a case of concealment of birth after a new-born baby was found abandoned in a school in KwaNobuhle.” It was not yet known how long the baby had been lying there dead. W/O Seekoei said they had sent the dead new-born baby for a post-mortem to determine the cause of death.
Naptosa’s 20 years restrospect conference in PE this week THE National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa (NAPTOSA) in the Eastern Cape holds its 8th Annual Conference at the Nelson Mandela Metro University (NMMU) Indoor Sports Centre, Missionvale Campus in Port Elizabeth this Friday to Sunday August 8 to 10. This teacher federation that believes in putting children first, decided on this Women’s Day long-weekend for the conference so that they did not disturb tuition. As is its tradition, Naptosa president Basil Manuel will deliver the keynote address. Naptosa will be looking at the 20 years this country has evolved in education under the working theme: “20 Years – Looking Back, Moving Forward”. Naptosa Senior Executive Officer and Media Administration, Mandisa Mannie said Naptosa believes it is of utmost importance that one looks back in order to stride forward, “In order to move forward one must do some retrospection to re-write and re-think the systems applied in the past. clude Asian, chicken and fish options which are currently being assessed. “One of our biggest concerns was the centre becoming overcrowded and this would lead customers to shop somewhere else,” said Rens. He went on saying, “When we took over management, we knew that we needed to go for the modern look and feel,” he added. In phase 2 and 3 a bigger Edgars, Foschini, Jet, along with many new fashion brands can be expected. Cape Union Mart, Due South, Markhams, Don Marco, and Green Cross will create a strong fashion statement. “There will be a fashion section for clothing stores,” said Head of Retail at Acucap, Gavin Jones. Some stores will be receiving upgrades and/or relocated. In addition a Vodacom superstore, Cardies and Musica will be positioned adjacent to the seating area of the food court. Rens considered the billion rand BayWest development as no major threat. “People do not just change their shopping pattern to see more of the same shops. If we do our work as well as we plan to we will not lose clients.” “The ‘outdated’ appearance of Greenacres is what attracted competitors,” he added. According to Jones, R282 million will be split between two parts of Greenacres, while some brands will move to larger stores. The first phase which includes the new food court will be completed by April 2015.
adopt the best practises or discard the worst, especially those that did not suit today’s climate,” according to Mannie. The President is expected to discuss this topic at a gala dinner scheduled for Friday August 8 from 7:15pm. An academic, Manuel is highly regarded in educational circles. He has represented NAPTOSA internationally in Europe and the USA on labour and other issues. A Chairperson of the Independent Labour Caucus (ILC) that represents 48% of public servants in the PSCBC, Manuel is a known critic on issues that affect both Educator and Learner. Furthermore, it being National Women’s Day on Saturday, Mannie said the role of women in society and education will be acknowledged with Lindsay Ziehl, Director of the Yokhuselo Haven for Battered Women, talking briefly on the topic: The Power Women Possess to Overcome. Delegates will be making a contribution to the shelter by donating little gifts.

Port Elizabeth opens Shanduka Business Incubator INDABA REPORTER STATE-owned enterprise Transnet officially opened an Eastern Cape business incubator in Port Elizabeth in conjunction with Shanduka Black Umbrellas (SBU) last week. The partnership is aimed at broadening participation in Transnet’s supply chain in the region and boost support to small 100% black owned businesses. Transnet and SBU have also collaborated in opening a business incubator in Richards Bay in Kwa-Zulu Natal. The Port Elizabeth incubator offers both non-financial and financial support to enterprises and will accommodate up to 50 entrepreneurs. Transnet’s two-year agreement with SBU, valued at R30 million for both the Port Elizabeth and Richards Bay incubators, includes training interventions, mentoring and the provision of business support, such as office space, a receptionist, boardroom and meeting room facilities and accounting services.
To complement the support entrepreneurs will receive in the incubators, Transnet will also offer loans of up to R5 million to enterprises via its Godisa Fund. Added to this, the support offered will provide entrepreneurs with an opportunity to participate meaningfully within the Transnet supply chain. “The partnership between SBU and Transnet arises from recognition that the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts. SBU is recognised as a leader in the enterprise and supplier development sector in South Africa. However, this partnership with Transnet allows SBU to expand its successful development model into entirely new areas,” said Shanduka Group CEO, Phuti Mahanyele. Transnet group chief executive Brian Molefe said, “We want to grow the South African economy and transform it and ensure that it’s sustainable. The partnership will make a significant impact on the viability and sustainability of many small businesses.” The Port Elizabeth incubator already has 28 businesses in incubation with more scheduled to join in the next few weeks.

Bay hosts innovative Premier Boxing League after court ruling NCEBA DLADLA THE Eastern Cape Boxing Promoters Association was hailed by Premier Boxing League (PBL) Chief Executive Dicky Ngqula for supporting his bid to have his boxing tournament take place at the Boardwalk Casino ICC in Port Elizabeth at the weekend. The first bout started four hours after the scheduled time. This was after permission was granted in the Eastern Cape High Court for the elite boxing league to continue - a resounding victory for the EC promoters - against boxing
regulators. “I want to thank the EC Boxing Promoters’ Association for standing by my side in ensuring that this tournament does take place. We are going to have our boxing. These kids will do tonight what they have been waiting for,” an emotional Ngqula. His innovative show guarantees the winner a whopping R1 million prize-money. Boxing South Africa (BSA) board under the leadership of Ntambi Ravele had called the fight off owing to the PBL boss failing to pay the pursemonies 14 days before the fight as demanded by boxing regulations.
Ngqula paid the money two days before the fight. The PBL Fight Night 5 was on the verge of being cancelled despite the commitment Ngqula said he made to BSA. This action by the boxing governing body, he said, had little regard for the sponsors which included the Provincial Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and the EC Gambling and Batting Board’s commitment to boxing including paying fans who came in droves to support the league that came for the first time in Nelson Mandela Bay. “We paid the money late. But we communicat-
ed with BSA and informed them about the delay but they did not come back to us - only to learn on the eleventh hour that the fight was cancelled. Ngqula took the matter to court and promoters supported him. PE Express Indaba heard that some of these promotors produced evidence that they too did pay their monies late and their fights were never stopped. They asked the judge to let the fight continue for the development of the sport in the province. “I don’t think the new BSA board understands the magnitude and economic impact of boxing in this province,” said Ngqula.

Magqabi U-13 girls’ soccer team aiming at provincial games
NCEBA DLADLA MAGQABI Primary School U-13 Girls Soccer Team will represent Nelson Mandela Bay at the 2014 Provincial Girls Football Tournament in East London this Friday and Saturday August 8 and 9. This is after the dedicated girls overcame stiff opposition against other primary schools from around the metro en route to winning the regional championships two weeks ago, according to a proud Magqabi Primary School teacher and football coach, Phindiwe Tetiwe. “I am very happy for the girls. They proved their mettle against very tough opposition,” said a visibly delighted Tetiwe. Tetiwe said that although it was the first time this year that her talented girls’ team was engaged in a competition of this magnitude, they played very well together as a team. “Also for the first time, my players, donned their newly sponsored Bridge Loans strip, and looked beautiful. They couldn’t lose,” said Tetiwe.
Tetiwe knew that the seven districts of the province would be a different ball game altogether. She was, however, optimistic her girls would play well and bring glory. Should they win, the girls would represent Eastern Cape in the national championships in Bloemfontein, Free State Province, next month. The 12-year-old goal-scorers Sinazo Zinto and Nombulelo Gqirana were also looking forward to the provincial games. They said they were hoping to continue with their prowess on the field of play. Sports convenor Lungelwa Soko commended a team of dedicated teachers and supportive parents who were giving their all to ensure that pupils got the best out of Magqabi Primary School. School principal, Siphiwo Hoho and Lungelwa Soko said sport and education should go together. “This means we’re getting closer to our vision as a school, that of a child centred education. It is an achievement for our pupils and a good sign of education in totality,” said Hoho proudly.

How to prevent accidents and treat burns REPORTER SOUTH Africa has a high rate of childhood burns, with as many as 1300 deaths every year, many of which are probably preventable. Reports have emphasised the vulnerability of infants, toddlers and children when it comes to accident burns. Congested homes, paraffin appliances, family stress and general impoverishment are some of the things that contribute to childhood burn injuries. During an average lifespan, households can expect an average of two fires serious enough to alert the fire department. Nationwide, a residential fire occurs every 67 seconds. Preschool children (age 5 and under) and older adults (age 65 and older) have the highest fire death rates in home fires. This month Sr Jane Kekana, Sr Pontsho Sepato, Zanele Ndumo and Bongani Pelesane gave the following tips to prevent accidental burns; Preventing Accidental Burns • Keep hot foods and drinks away from the edge of counters and tables and do not put hot items on tablecloths
• Don’t hold a child and something hot at the same time. • Keep children away from the stove, turn pan handles in, and cook on the rear burners when possible. • Do not allow children to use the micro-

Steam burns the face and hands if a popcorn packet or dish is opened too soon. • Make sure you put all dishes and containers that are not microwave safe out of
reach. Some plastics or paper can overheat in a microwave and set alight. •Make sure that all left-over food is reheated the correct way before giving it to your child. • Mouth burns are caused by unevenly heated foods. • Eggs, cooked in their shell, can explode, causing second degree burns. How do you know if it is critical Critical burns need immediate medical attention because they can be life threatening. A burn is considered critical when any one of the following occurs: • The victim has difficulty in breathing. • Burns cover more than one of the victim’s body parts. • The victim is an infant, young child or an elderly person (and the burn is other than a minor one). • Burns occur to the head, neck, hands, feet, or genitals. • Burns resulted from chemicals, explosions or electricity. • Minor burns affect only the top layer of the skin, leaving a red, dry patch of skin. Though painful, these burns will usually heal in 5 to 6 days.
What to do: • Run cool water over the area for several minutes. If in doubt about the severity of the burns, seek medical attention. • Install and maintain smoke detectors on each level of your house and also outside each bedroom. • Plan and practise two escape routes from every room in the house. • Teach children how to get out. Teach them to crawl to the door and test it before opening it. Show them how to take alternative routes incase of fire and smoke at first escape door. If using the window is one of your options make sure they know how to open it. Buy an approved chain ladder and teach them how to use it. Lastly you need to set up a meeting place outside your house. • Phone the fire department from a neighbour’s house. Teach children how to report a fire, give clear directions to the house, and to stay on the phone until the dispatcher says they are done. Never go back into the house. • Teach children what to do if their clothes are on fire. Stop, drop, roll, shout for help, cool the burns with cool water, NOT ice. • Make sure your children’s sleepwear is not inflammable. Clothing burn victims are more likely to die as a result of their injuries than people burned any other way. The clothing causes a deeper burn.

Locals artists welcome opening of local SAMRO office NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay artists have welcomed the opening of the South African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) office in Port Elizabeth last Tuesday. Artists, musicians, deejays, composers and authors expressed their thanks to the metro municipality for this move which they feel will provide a major boost to their careers. “The opening of this office has been realised through behind-the-scenes efforts by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and the Eastern Cape Department of Arts and Culture,” said Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki. According to Mniki the metro municipality, through its Film and Music Office, convinced SAMRO to open an office in Nelson Mandela Bay to look after the interests of artists across the Eastern Cape. The new SAMRO satellite office will be on the 8th floor of Kwantu Towers, Vuyisile Mini Square. It will help artists with applications
for membership, notification of works, registration of songs and other related matters. SAMRO’s responsibility is to protect the intellectual property of composers and authors, and to ensure that their creative output is adequately accredited and compensated, both locally and internationally. SAMRO is a leading copyright administration business, dealing primarily with the administration of music composers’ and authors’ performing rights. An organisation committed to building a commercial and expert regional creative sector with a national and international reputation, SAMRO is expected to attract investment and talent to Nelson Mandela Bay. It also works towards building community cohesion through the creative industry. “We are confidently moving in the right direction. It is through music, arts and sport that we will take this City to where it belongs, among the best in the world. The talent in this Province is in abundance. Ours is to develop, support and nurture it,” said Arts, Recreation and Culture Portfolio Chairperson Cllr

Imbasa Primary School Choir shines in the national competition SELBY MADIKANE IT came as no surprise when Imbasa Primary School Double Mixed Quartet (MDQ) made the Eastern Cape Province proud after they came second in the South African Schools Choral Eisteddfods (SASCE) at the Durban International Convention Centre last month. Imbasa Primary School battled with the best of the best school choirs of South Africa. Conductor Nyameka Vara, who was visibly excited, stated that the competition was very tight and her choir sang their hearts out. Vara explains, “Our school’s mixed double quartet did us very proud. Despite the high standards which were set in Durban, this choir showed character, ded-
ication, discipline and determination. They were not threatened by singing in front of the strangers far away from home. I think their confidence played a phenomenal role. To come in second position was not easy but we fought very hard. It was very tight. The winners in our Western Piece category went home with 78%, with us following on their heels with 77%.” Imbasa Primary School MDQ scooped a trophy and a certificate of participation for their sterling performance. Imbasa Primary School also received a piano as part of their package from the Department of Education. Conductor Nyameka Vara with Imbasa Mixed Double Quartet show the fruits of their hard labour. TIRED OF POUNDING THE PAVEMENT LOOKING FOR A JOB?
U’hage resident turns home into reading club REPORTER A Uitenhage woman is investing in her community, its caregivers and children by turning her home into a reading club with the Nal’ibali campaign. Khayelitsha resident, Phumeza Mangcaka, said she is working hard to ensure that the magic of stories and reading is brought to life for the children through her role as a Story Sparker for the Nal’ibali national reading-for-enjoyment campaign. As part of Nal’ibali’s network of over 300 reading clubs nationwide, Mangcaka supports 12 clubs in the Uitenhague area, including the Masiphulisane Nal’ibali Reading Club, which she runs from her own home. “I myself really enjoy reading and sharing my passion with children is very rewarding espcially when I see how quickly they benefit from it; when I see their vocabularies and reading skills improving, and how much they look forward to our time together,” said Mangcaka. Nal’ibali reading clubs provide relaxed, safe environments for children to read, tell stories and talk about what they are reading with trusted caregivers and volunteers. They can take place anywhere – in schools, libraries, community centres, creches and even homes. “We also do things like writing, singing songs and playing games related to reading and writing, because, as children experience stories and books in different ways, they begin to learn that reading can be an enjoyable and entertaining activity. Knowing this is what inspires them to want to read and then to read more and more so that it becomes a lifelong habit,” Mangcaka explains. To carry out her role as a Nal’ibali Story Sparker, Mangcaka received specialised training from PRAESA (The Project for the Study of Alternative Education in South Africa), which has 20 years experience in community reading clubs and early literacy development, and which is driving the Nal’ibali campaign together with partners. “We are all born to tell stories, memorise and make sense of life in story form. So, Nal’ibali uses the power of stories – oral and written, and in as many languages as possible – to inspire children to want to read and write,” according to PRAESA director Carole Bloch. Mangcaka said her reading clubs are open to both children and their parents, giving adults the chance to connect with their children and practise sharing books and stories with them. For parents and caregivers wanting to get reading with their children, Mangcaka advises, “Start with the stories you know, the ones your own parents or grandparents told you. You can explore different stories from there. But, no matter who you are or where you come from, you can help put your kids on the path to success at school - just by reading and telling them stories at home before they start school!” For more info and free children’s stories in 6 South African languages, visit www.nalibali.org or www.nalibali.mobi.

Premier Boxing League Boardwalk, PE results NCEBA DLADLA EAST London’s Vusumzi “Boko Haram” Bokolo was the biggest winner at the Premier Boxing League (PBL) Fight Night 5 at the Boardwalk Casino International Convention Centre (ICC) in Port Elizabeth last Saturday. The fight was brought courtesy of Motherwell promoter Sibongile Nkebe of Silindokuhle Boxing Promotions. The EC lightweight champion Bokolo stopped Johannesburg’s Grant “Fire Ball” Fourie in the 5-round ding-dong battle to score high in the penultimate event of the innovative boxing league. Both boxers kissed the canvas twice in the fight, but it was the East London pugilist who had the last laugh when Fourie’s corner threw in a towel. Referee Alan Matakane stopped the proceedings in 2 min 48 seconds. Fourie had gone down after taking a vicious uppercut from the taller East Londoner.
This result, however, will not take Bokolo with 24 fights, 17 wins, six losses and a solitary draw anywhere closer to the people’s idol and favourite Xolisani “Nomeva” Ndongeni who is standing tall on the scoreboard. Fourie dropped to 23 fights, 16 wins, six defeats and a stalemate. WBF Pan African bantamweight champion Thabo Sishwana of Duncan Village beat national bantamweight champion Toto Helebe of Cape Town on points in a hardfought battle. The duo will certainly meet again in the not-too-distant future as Sishwana is a mandatory challenger for Helebe’s national diadem. Ex-two time SA Junior-flyweight champion Mfundo Gwayana (Mdantsane) beat the league’s first-timer Mzwabantu Dabaza of Uitehage on points in the Flyweight division while a featherweight contest between Aphiwe Mboyiya of East London and Gauteng-based Limpopo pugilist Oscar Chauke was declared a draw.
Referee Andile Matakane shows the winner, Mdantsane’s Vusumzi “Boko Hara” Bokolo who stopped Grant “FireBall” Fourie of Joburg in 5- rounds in PE during PBL Fight Night 5 on Saturday.

Highbury overcame African Chiefs SELBY MADIKANE IT was a highly-contested affair when Highbury delivered a 2-0 defeat to the guts African Chiefs during their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay ABSA Ladies Regional League at Bridgemead on Saturday. Highbury was untouchable and did not give the KwaLanga lasses any space to breathe. Chiefs’ strikers squandered some
golden opportunities in front of Highbury’s goals. Golden Stars gave Tomorrow Stars a 4-0 hiding while Sophakama whacked PE College 5-0 in the one-sided clash. Bodene Shatterprufe collected maximum three points when they cruised to a 2-1 win over Warriors. WIN WIN WIN!: TICKETS TO CHIPPA UNITED VS PLATINUM STARS
Bay fans expected to support Chippa’s opening game against Dikwena NCEBA DLADLA NEWLY-ACQUIRED Nelson Mandela Bay Professional Soccer League (PSL) outfit Chippa United will open its Absa Premier League fixture against Platinum Stars at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium this Saturday, August 9. Kickoff is at 6pm. The Chilli Boys, as the local team is affectionately known, would be hoping to making a positive start to this season’s campaign in
the elite football league, following their failed attempt previously. Winning promotion to PSL, however, has given an indication of a dedicated team willing and able to show character, and that they are not visiting the PSL but there to stay. United owner Sivuyile “Chippa” Mpengesi has done justice in creating depth for the coach Kosta Papic to utilise in making sure that victory was certain from the start. The acquisition of Edward Manqele and Thamsanqa Sangweni from Sundowns as well
as the duo of Manti Moholo and Patrick Dauda among others from Orlando Pirates will give Papic enough of an arsenal against the defending MTN 8 champions outfit Platinum Stars, otherwise known as Dikwena. It is the strike-force of Manqele and Andile Mbuyane that must open the Star’s backline and score goals. With a positive start to the season marked by a win against Sundowns in the MTN 8 Cup match last Saturday, Allan Freeze’s boys would be hoping to outgun the new-comers in
the league. Then, the 12th player - the fans - must go out there and support the local team. Chippa’s next fixture is away against Supersport United at Lucas Moripe stadium in Tshwane. WIN WIN WIN!
PE Express Indaba is giving away 7 double tickets to Saturday’s match between Chippa United and Platinum Stars. Simply answer the following question: What is the other name of Chippa United? Enter via your cellphone on peexpress.mobi

Whites overcome tough Zebras SELBY MADIKANE FIREWORKS were produced when Union RFC earned a 20-3 hard win from St Cyprians RFC in EP Rugby Fred Hafke Rugby League game at Dan Qeqe Stadium on Saturday. Union RFC affectionately known as Whites pressed hard but Zebras soaked the pressure. Union’s No 8 Siya Charlie was a nerve to Cyprians. The first unconverted try of the game which gave Union a 5-0 lead, was scored by Siphosethu Ngwalangwala in the 26th minute. Following their hard work, Union were awarded a penalty which Unathi Makasi kicked it easily over the poles to put his side 8-0 in the 30th minute. Zebras’ flyhalf Khanyisile Rasta Ngcewu, who had an excellent game, missed a drop
goal which could have reduced the deficit. The halftime score was 8-0 with Cyprians trailing. In the second half Zebras played a total different game, as they threw everything into the game. In the 45th minute Ngcewu’s penalty kick reduced Zebras’ deficit to 8-3. Union’s score increased to 15-3 following a beautiful converted try came courtesy of Sibongile Nqweniso in the 50th minute. Zolani Champ Mtati intercepted the pass from his counterparts and he scored the last unconverted try of the game, that rubbed the salt into the wounds of the brave Cyprians to make the final score 20-3. In the reserves section Union won 15-0. In other game Morning Stars beat Eagle Stars 13-7 while the former’s reserves won 10-7. Walmer Wales defeated Kuyga 16-12 and Wales’ reserves lost 26-7 to Kuyga.
PE Defence and Warriors fought a fierce battle SELBY MADIKANE IT WAS a real humdinger when the PE Defence fought a fierce battle against Warriors during their Port Elizabeth Football Association (PEFA) Premier League clash at EC Defence Grounds on Saturday. However, the fans were kept on their toes after both outfits gave a good display of football. Eventually supporters from both sides were relieved to see their teams sharing the spoils 2-2. Following their last drubbing by Callies, Vodacom NMMU Madibaz handed a 3-1 defeat to
a struggling side Hearts at South Campus on Friday evening. PE Homerovers disappointed their supporters following their dismal performance during their game against Forresters which defeated them 2-0 at Kemsley Park on Saturday. In the highly contested affair Highbury were held to a 1-1 draw by Central Acemates at Bridgemead. Motherwell Academy fought bravely despite their 5-3 loss to Callies at Victoria Park. KwaDwesi All Stars showed some signs of improvement when they hammered NMB Municipality 4-0 at Kemsley Park on Sunday afternoon.
However, the tournament is made possible by Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC). All teams which participate will receive a set of kit and the individual awards will be catered for. Gates will open at 8:00 and admission is free.
