FEAR OF INTIMIDATION AT ELECTIONS

IEC, police ready for elections MANDLENKOSI MXENGI

T

HE INDEPENDENT Electoral Commission (IEC) in the Eastern Cape announced that it is well-prepared for the general elections today, (Wednesday, May 7) despite fears of political intolerance and intimidation in some hotspot areas in the province such as Sterkspruit. On Friday, The Provincial Commissioner of the SA Police Service in the Eastern Cape, Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta indicated that the SAPS in the Province is ready to deploy more than 10 000 members throughout the Province to ensure that the election process takes place peacefully at the 4 615 polling stations in the Province. “I would like to assure members of the public that they will be safe when going to the polling stations. We have completed our operational plan months ahead of time and are ready to deploy police members from May 3. All hot spots areas will also be very closely monitored and additional forces placed on standby in those areas. Art crosses borders

Learners from the Ithembelihle Comprehensive School in New Brighton have the opportunity to sell their art overseas to fund more art workshops. This is part of the Artombo project, spon sored by the German Research institution DAAD, in which learners are taught to create art works which is then marketed in Germany via the internet. The themes are topical and SA’s elections and 20 years of democracy are the inspiration behind their latest works. Avela Grootboom (18), Lindikhaya Dube (17) and Bonga Gwaqu (19) of Itembelihle School in New Brighton show their interpretation of the topic. PHOTO:WERNER HILLS

Zille ends political roadshow in Bay

LEOLYNN SMITH IF it wasn’t for the fact that it was election time, any layman would have thought it was a rock concert. The music blared and the crowd, who were excitedly waiting for their heroine, were dancing, laughing and singing. Even Edmund van Vuuren, the usually dignified DA MEC of Education, was dancing on the stage. Nosimo Balindlela, former Eastern Cape ANC premier and now DA-MP, was enjoying herself dancing (barefoot) among the crowd. Other DA VIPs such as Donald Lee, Nqaba Bhanga, Athol Trollip and Bobby Stevenson were also moving to the beat. Because Helen Zille, DA leader, was on the way to address them.

On Monday Zille visited NMMU’s Missionvale Campus on her last visit to the Bay before the national elections. And when Zille entered the hall, she was surrounded by fans – everyone just wanted to hold her hand. When Zille, in tight jeans and tackies, took to the stage a man shouted from the crowd “Zille for president!” She answered him with “Viva!” and a fist held high in the air. Outside the hall, away from all the political excitement a few people had this to say: “What do I get if I vote? I cannot vote for a councillor who cannot help me. It’s not worth it”. “There are too many people who are unemployed,” said another. “We know there will be job opportunities when they come to fix the roads in Missionvale. But we are looking for work that will last.”

Special voting starts off smoothly REPORTER NELSON Mandela Bay Municipality has not recorded any incidents of problems in the Special Voting that started on Monday. According to a media statement issued by the Eastern Cape Office of the Independent Electoral Commission a total of 3665 voting stations opened for special votes on Monday (May 5) in the Eastern Cape to enable voters whose applications have been approve to cast their special votes. Special votes were cast at the voting stations and teams of IEC staff accompanied by party agents also visited approved voters at

home to cast their special votes. A total number of 57 477 voters have been approved for special votes. A total of 3 983 were approved to vote at the voting stations and 52 274 voters have been approved for home visits. Buffalo City Metro had the highest number of special voters at 6 409 followed by the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro with 6 209. According to the IEC the incidents reported during the first day of special votes on Monday included an attempt to burn a school used as a voting station at Ekuzoleni JSS in Sterkspruit but voting did take place at the voting station.

At Kidston JSS in Engcobo service delivery protesters burned tyres which blocked access to the voting station but the voting station opened and voting continued after the intervention of SAPS members to resolve the service delivery protest. “It has been reported that in Mthatha a deputy presiding officer has allowed people who had not applied for special votes to vote at the voting station. The matter is being investigated and will be dealt with in terms of the Electoral Act,” the statement read. The SAPS has been working closely with the IEC staff to provide security at the voting stations and for home visits. SAPS have also played a major role in making interven-

tions in areas where access to voting station has been denied because of community protests. “When our teams visited some households the applicants were not at home, mostly the elderly who had gone to SASSA pension pay points to collect their grants. “Unfortunately those who were not found at home during the visit by the special vote teams will not be re-visited and as such will have to make a plan to go to a voting station on May 7,” the statement read. The IEC urger voters to continue using their information facilities: SMS ID number to 32810 or Call Centre: 0800 11 8000 or visit IEC website: www.elections.org.za.

Uitenhage cop hailed for good investigation and 20 years imprisonment NCEBA DLADLA MBONGENI Xhashomba (27) of KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage received a hefty 20 years sentence at the Regional Court last week, for the alleged 17 April 2014 rape and armed robbery of an elderly couple . According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basil Seekoei, Xhashomba and four other suspects entered the house of the elderly couple, his neighbours, during the night with the intention of robbery. “While others were taking the Plasma TV

and other electrical appliances worth about R7 800 from the dining room, Xhashomba went to the elderly couple’s bedroom and forced the husband at knife-point to close his eyes while he raped the fifty-year-old woman at knife-point,” said Seekoei. Xhashomba fled the scene after finishing with his evil deed, according to the police spokesperson. He, however, appeared at the house the following morning with other caring neighbours pretending not to know anything about the incident. “But the victim’s husband pointed him out

to the police and he was arrested on the spot,” said W/0 Seekoei. Xhashomba received 10 years for rape and another 10 years for the armed robbery. The two sentences would run concurrently, according to Seekoei. Uitenhage Police Station Cluster Commander Brigadier Phillip Salukazana commended investigating Detective Warrant Officer Grant Measures for the arrest, said W/O Seekoei. Uitenhage’s D/W/O Grant Measures hailed for good work. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

IEC and police ready for elections amid fear of intimidation Continued from page 1 “We request members of the public not to take weapons of any kind to polling stations and urge them to adhere to the instructions of the presiding officers at all times. “I would like to emphasize that we will not tolerate any form of criminality, intimidation, disruptive behaviour and drunkenness at the polling stations”, she concluded. During the November voter registration weekend IEC staff withdrew their services following threats and intimidation in 76

Sterkspruit voting stations. Police were called to monitor the situation. During the registration process, the IEC also reported incidents of threats and intimidation at 9 voting stations in Cookhouse and 3 voting stations in Port St Johns. In Port Elizabeth a registration tent was destroyed by angry protestors and IEC staff intimidated at the Nceba Faku Village voting station. Presenting the province’s state of readiness for this Wednesday’s national and provincial elections, IEC provincial electoral officer Tami Mraji said they were ready for the

elections. However, he also raised concerns about political intolerance and intimidation. “The environment in the province is relatively calm but there are concerns about political intolerance and intimidation experienced in some areas during the voter registration weekend in November last year and February this year,” said Mraji. All voting stations would be open from 7am to 9pm today (Wednesday, May 7). . In the province there are 3 240 059 registered voters, 4 615 voting stations, 4 mobile voting stations, 58 voting centres and 179

temporary voting stations. The provincial results operation centre based at the Regent Hotel in East London was officially launched on Sunday. Political parties contesting the elections have been allocated space to observe the proceedings. Elections are contested by 18 political parties in the province. Buffalo City Metro had the highest number of special votes totaling 6 409, followed by Nelson Mandela Bay Metro with 3 380 special votes in Nyandeni, Mbhashe and Mnquma municipalities respectively.

TRANSNET has undertaken to repair the damaged houses of all their staff who chose not to heed the NUMSA call to strike at Gqura Container Terminal this month. Workers who have already fixed damages to their properties will also be covered. The strike, which started on April 25, had by its 12th day seen over 15 attacks on non-striking workers living in the Motherwell, Wells Estate, Kwazakhele and Zwide area. Eastern Cape Terminals general manager, Siyabulela Mhlaluka said, “As we all know, lawlessness, intimidation, and senseless violence have accompanied the work stoppage by a small minority of our colleagues at the terminal. “This has resulted in houses belonging to those of us who chose not to partake in the strike being bombed, stoned and attacked. Some of our colleagues have also reported intimidation.

Mhlaluka said the decision to cover cost of repairs signalled their commitment to protect the right of their colleagues who chose not to join the strike. “It also signals our resolve to stand firm in the face of such intimidation tactics and violence,” he added. Transnet has also made available R100 000 reward for information that may lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of the perpetrators. Warning striking NUMSA members Mhlakula said arrests were imminent and Transnet would take necessary disciplinary measures against any employee implicated in the attacks. Mhlakula also said while Transnet recognised members’ rights to strike, striking workers must also take into consideration the “no work no pay” rule, striking workers must forfeit their right to bonuses and container incentive bonuses, and a lockout has been implemented for striking members until their union withdraws its demand.

Excitement mounts for Masidlale league finals

TEN boys’ and girls’ teams will battle it out in the Spur Masidlale Soccer League Finals on Tuesday, 13 May, at the NU2 Stadium in Motherwell following an action packed series of exciting soccer. Teachers, local coaches and players participated in a nine-week series during which ten schools entered their top teams with kids aged between nine and 13 years. Each team comprised seven players with three substitutes. Three points were awarded for a win and two points for a draw, while a loss received zero points. The boys’ and girls’ teams finishing top of the log will win a special Spur lunch and PSL mascot experience. According to Khakhi Diala of the Spur Group, the programme is currently recognised as one of the leading youth soccer development initiatives in the country. “We started with 12 one-day coaching clinics in 2005, but the league has grown steadily and has highlighted

the huge need for initiatives that provide a platform for youth development. Although numbers are limited to 200 participants per region, we have managed to improve drastically the level of skills training for both coaches and learners,” said Diala. Diala further emphasised that the most rewarding aspect of this corporate investment initiative was that it gave the group the opportunity to change lives. “Soccer is just the tool we’re using. Our goal is to empower both the coaches and the kids with important life skills, which will equip them to be role models in their communities long after the Spur Masidlale league comes to a close,” states Diala. Diala said the life skills training for the coaches was facilitated by Macsteel Maestros Life Skills and specifically targeted areas that will increase players’ self-confidence and self-esteem, while promoting positive behavioural shifts.

The project includes a number of activities such as storytelling and reading at 16 crèches to the Grade R and Grade 1 children at the Walmer Junior School in Gqebera, and formal literacy sessions with pupils from Grade 2, at the school. The activities are volunteer-based and take place at the school during school-time. Walmer Angels Project Founder, Glenda Brunette, said the library service has arranged a weekly story-hour at the Walmer Junior School for the two foundation phase grades, and is also considering story-telling at the crèches. “The care-givers at these crèches have been supported in their valuable-jobs by training and skills transfer, and a number of crèches have had toilets, classrooms and jungle gyms installed by private companies in response to approaches by the Walmer Angels Projects. It is not only the crèches in Gqebera

that benefit from the story-telling, reading and other educational play activities, though,” she said. Municipal spokesperson, Kupido Baron, said libraries throughout the metro area invite their local crèches to come to the library for a weekly fun session as a way of introducing the younger children to libraries and reading. Often this is the only opportunity for the toddlers to be exposed to books and reading in any way. “To assist in this activity, we ask the public to donate suitable books for toddlers at crèches, play schools and nursery schools in the metro. All libraries will have a box labelled “book donations” on display where these books can be dropped off, and at the end of May the books will be collected, sorted, repaired if necessary, and delivered to their new owners at the start of the term in July,” he ended. Silindokuhle Boxing vows to graduate to big league NCEBA DLADLA SILINDOKUHLE Boxing Promotions boss Sibongile Nkebe promises this Boxing South Africa (BSA) Calendar-year that started in April is going to be his year of growth. Currently categorised as a development promoter, Motherwell, Port Elizabeth’s Nkebe wants his to be regarded as a major boxing promotions company in the country along the lines of the Mzimasi “Bra Mzi” Mnguni’s and Siphatho Handi’s Eyethu and Mamali

Boxing Promotion Companies, respectively. “I have to grow and graduate from the development to the national and international boxing promoter quicker than it is expected,” said Nkebe, who added that he was hoping to take one of his boxers to the national or international title challenge this year. “With the likes of Nomampondomise Xotyeni, a number 2 rated South African Lightweight contender ready to fight for the title, I don’t see the reason why we should not join the big promotional league,” said Nkebe. He has EC Light heavyweight champion

Lesley Hope at no. 5, Supermiddle-weight Masixole Botile (4) who wants to challenge Christopher Buthelezi albeit in the Middleweight division, and the trio of Lungisani Jikani (6), Anelisa Gungqisa (9) and Lusindiso Siyo (6) among boxers who are able to fight for any of the titles offered in fisticuffs in the country. Siyo and Gungqisa lost in big fights in East London recently, against SA Flyweight champion Lwandile Sityatha and Herbert Nkibiti (Welterweight), respectively. Nkebe said a challenge for the WBA Pan Af-

rican titles for his charges in the forseeable future was not too much to ask, considering that the duo were highly rated in their respective divisions. “We also have the dark-horses, the strawweights Lonwabo Roboshi, a puncher, and an artistic boxer Siphosethu Ncisana, who are ready to show their mettle in the division in the not too distant future,” said Nkebe, adding that he has made his intentions clear to his boxers and their camps. “We must have a title by the end of this year, come what may,” he said.

Rugby veterans launch junior rugby development programme for townships REPORTER THE MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture in the Eastern Cape, Xoliswa Tom, officiated at the launch of the Township Junior Rugby Development Programme on Friday at the Coega Village in Port Elizabeth. Through this programme, fixtures will be played, targeting players in the under 12 and under 15 categories. These fixtures are scheduled to start on 17 May 2014. The emblem of the programme has at its centre former black Springbok centre Mbulelo Matomela tackling Peter Mkata, also a former black springbok flyhalf, during the EPRU vs KWARU match at Dan Qeqe Stadium in 1978. The programme has been started by the Rugby Veterans in the Nelson Mandela Region after a meeting on Women’s day last year where they posed themselves the ques-

tion of what role the rugby fraternity can play in acknowledging the fearless struggles waged by the Women of South Africa that led to a democraticy enjoyed by all South Africans black and white. “In response to the question we all agreed that there is nothing that any woman can be proud of except the development of her child,” said Vuyani Limba, secretary of the programme. This response compelled the Rugby Veterans to establish the Township Junior Rugby Development Programme (TJRDP ). “As Rugby Veterans we assessed the country’s performance in attaining rugby transformation goals after the dawn of democracy as Women of South Africa fought fearlessly to liberate our country. We all agreed that our progress on this score leaves much to be desired. Our assessment is based on the number of black players getting selected to

represent Springboks,” said Limba. “We all agreed something must be done because it cannot be accepted that almost after 20 years of democracy only 1 black qualifies to be in the starting line up of Springboks,” he said. They resolved that as previously disadvantaged individuals they should stop complaining and embark on a sustainable programme that would yield good results for the rugby transformation agenda. “Our focus is on the township schools because in former Model C schools rugby is given priority. The age groups targeted are under 12 in Primary Schools and under 15 in High Schools. All the players participating in the TJRDP will be captured in a data base because each child will be followed from this programme (entry level) until the Springbok Graduation through the EC Southern Kings Rugby Franchise coming back on the field in the 2016 rugby season,”

he said. For this programme the Nelson Mandela metro is divided into 10 Zones. Schools will play fixtures against one another every Wednesday. The Zonal Champions will play Quarter Finals until the ultimate Finals for the Nelson Mandela Schools Mayoral Cup Championship. Whilst fixtures unfold the officials from each zone will select Zonal Squads that will play fixtures against one another every Saturday. “From the Zonal Fixtures the Nelson Mandela TJRDP Teams will be selected and thoroughly trained for National Craven Week and Grant Kgomo Competitions through the provincial structures. “Undoubtedly the TJRDP initiative will enhance rugby development in our region and ultimately make positive impact in the South African rugby tranformation agenda,” said Limba.

Lion City beats Callies at Motherwell stadium SELBY MADIKANE IT APPEARS as if the league race in SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League is between Lion City and SUBS following their good results during the weekend (from 3 to 4 May 2014) Lion City made matters difficult for Callies when they overcame them 2-1 at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium. City opened the score sheet when they were awarded a penalty which was taken by Mihlali Mkonto. Apparently Callies’ defender Cleavon Draai was given a red card when he used his hand to stop City’s goal from crossing the goal-line. City increased their lead to 2-0 when Siphesihle Bongo headed home their second goal

after a nifty cross from Akhona Manxola. Callies pulled a consolation goal after City’s goalkeeper Ntembeko Mbombota failed to punch a ball from a well taken corner kick by Darryn Bamboo. SUBS earned a hard 1-0 win over Peace United, a goal courtesy of Vuyisani Masumpa on the stroke of the second half. Stars’ mission was evident when they took the game to the hosts from the first whistle. Stars first goal was scored by Muzi Mnguni in the half following a scramble in the City’s goal area. Had it not been for City’s goalkeeper Landile Libazi who came up with top class saves the first half score could have been huge. The home side’s defence looked shaky. . IT LOOKED like Manchester Babes were in their practice session when they secured 6-0 victory from Continental Express during their SAFA Eastern Cape Ladies Sasol League game at Jabavu Stadium on Saturday. Babes were untouchable as they opened with a goal courtesy of Anelia Mhletywa in the 5th minute. Things seemed to have fallen apart in respect of Express defence as Mhletywa scored her second goal in the 8th minute. Ncamisa Vena banged her first goal in the 20th minute and she finished her brace in the 35th minute. Zinzi Tom came up with her game in the 58th minute while the last nail to Express’ coffin was put when Nokuthula Bottoman scored the last goal of the game to make the final score 6-0 in favour of Babes.
