Bay entrepreneur is finalist for national title

A

YOUNG entrepreneur from Motherwell’s motor fitment and tyre business has received a huge kickstart after he was recently named a finalist in a national competition for young business men and women.

Bonisile Mjoli, the owner of Allsharp Motor Fitment and Tyres in NU4B, Motherwell, has not only won R120 000 by being named as a top 18 finalist in the 2015 SAB Kickstart programme, but is also receiving valuable mentorship as part of the programme.

SAB Kickstart is a youth entrepreneurship programme run by South African Breweries - offering young business men and women a business development support program.

In 2014, the previous SAB KickStart finalists created a total of 98 part- and full-time employment.

A business development strategy has been crafted for each of the finalist businesses according to a needs-analysis undertaken at the beginning of 2015.

This determines the grant funding received by each and the necessary business development support, including individual mentoring over the coming months.

Each of the finalists has begun an intensive business development support programme, which will culminate in an award ceremony to celebrate the top 5 entrepreneurs amongst them at the end of this year during Global Entrepreneurship Week 2015 (GEW), where they stand to win additional grant funding of between R100 000 and R500 000.

Mjoli was chosen after presenting a business plan which he was able to compile after receiving intensive business training in the auto sector at GIBS University of Business Technology in Johannesburg.

Mjoli started Allsharp Motor Fitments and Tyres in 2011. The business provides motor suspension service including fitment of CV joints, bearings, ball joints and shocks.

It also sells new and second hand tyres and brake pads.

Mjoli passed matric at Masiphathisane High School before obtaining his N6 Qualification at PE College.

He then studied for a Business Management Diploma at NMMU. He has previous experience working in the industry before making the decision to venture out on his own.

In the Motherwell, Port Elizabeth area, there is a lack of motor fitment services which Mjoli decided to fill with his business.

He employs five people, three of which work during weekends.

He attributes his success to the sound

business advice he is receiving from the mentor that the SAB Kickstart programme has provided for him.

“The Port Elizabeth-based mentor helps me to grow the business and separate business and pleasure.

“I now have a deal from Dunlop to do the Dunlop Express.

“This will mean incredible growth for my business. There are very few people in the township that manage to get a deal of this nature. In fact, it is still a new venture in the townships,” said Mjoli.

“This is an amazing experience. I am very thankful to SAB, he said. He also thanked the Motherwell community for their support.

He is however, realistic enough, to realise that with success comes a certain amount of challenges too.

“I need space. I must get enough space for a wheel alignment machine as well as office space and a container to keep my new and remoulded tyres,” said Mjoli.

Mafanya family received renovated home from Ubutyebi Trust NCEBA DLADLA THE Ubutyebi Trust, a Port Elizabeth-based Non-Profitmaking-Organisation (NPO) handed over a rebuilt house to the poor and vulnerable Mafanya family at Sandla Street, New Brighton on Thursday 1 April.

The family’s house was destroyed in a fire eight years ago. Since then the two unemployed brothers, Sakhile and Mawabo Mafanya, were forced to squat with neighbours. Some of the relatives, including a sister, had to go and live with other relatives in Cape Town.

This state of affairs worried Ward Cllr Kholekile Frans who asked Ubutyebi Trust to intervene. And the rest, as they say, is history.

New Brighton-born Ubutyebi Trust Chairman Mthwabo Ndube said the Trust also bought furniture for the rooms, kitchen and dining room including a fridge and television.

Bay Municipality and promised that the municipality would take over and provide the family with water, sanitation and electricity.

“This is no April’s fool joke, but rather service delivery in operation,” said Ndube. He explained that the trust received funding from government and international donors to do exactly that – to assist the poorest of the poor and most vulnerable in the community.

The renovated housing delivery was the third in New Brighton and the eighth in total, according to Ndube.

There was one in Despatch and another in the Northern Areas, and another in Uitenhage.

“Our goal is to assist government by being there for those who need help. To make their lives better,” said Ndube, adding that sometimes the municipality would take longer to deal with such problems.

The trust also helps poor families in starting food gardens by providing them with tools, said Ndube.

REPORTER Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is now implementing a 24-hour loadshedding period to comply with what they said was a directive by the national War Room.

NMBM Communications Director Roland Williams said the NMB was the only Metro which did not implement a 24-hour Loadshedding schedule, despite Eskom’s re-

quired stipulation. “Ultimately, we have tried to make the reality of Loadshedding have as minimal an effect on the lives of our residents as possible. The 24 hour periods will be implemented in the event of loadshedding.”

Williams said groups will remain evenly, equitably and fairly spread across the 24hour period within a specific week. Stages 1 and 2 will remain at 2-hour intervals and stages 3 and 4 at 4-hour intervals.

Changes will be in Despatch’s Khayamnandi area which will now be included in Group 1 (Area 2) and the North End section will be included in Group 7 (Area 19).

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused, but we are forced to comply with the national loadshedding protocols,” he ended.

Fireworks bylaw reviewed LIZEKA TANDWA

THE municipality’s decision to review the fireworks by-law and appointment of a task team to investigate the matter has been welcomed by societies campaigning for the rights of animals.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Council approved the review of its Fireworks By-law on March 31.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Mayoral Spokesperson, Kupido Baron, said during a formal sitting of the local legislature it was decided that a task team comprising members of the Safety and Security Committee, relevant officials from Legal Services and the Safety and Security Directorate, be established.

“The first duty of the newly established team will be to spearhead the implementation of a public participation process – to consult all relevant role-players – in respect of a possible ban of fireworks in residential areas and public open spaces as well as the review of the Fireworks Bylaw,” said Baron.

DA Spokesperson for Safety and Security, Gustav Rautenbach, said he started campaigning for this in August 2013 after residents and organisations such as the Animal Welfare Society raised concerns regarding fireworks within residential suburbs and public spaces.

Rautenbach, however, warned that there was still much that needed to be done. “This review is very important and can go a long way towards ensuring the safety of animals and also limit noise pollution. There is, however, still a long way to go. It took 2 years for the municipality actually to put this review on the table. We need the public to participate when it is their turn to do so,” said Rautenbach.

Rautenbach said the third phase of the review would be a public participation meeting. “Concerned residents must come to this meeting and voice their concerns so action can be taken. After that the reviewed by-law will go to Council for approval,” he added.

Animal Anti-Cruelty League’s, Linda-Louise

Swain said the review was vital to them as fireworks and tyre burning in most suburbs across the Bay was of great concern.

“The problems caused by fireworks displays during public holidays have meant that we have had to double our volunteers’ fieldwork as they are always on full standby. We have extra volunteers for those particular days – about an extra 4 in addition to our 6 volunteers. The Fire Department also helps us with calls on these occasions. This can be avoided through these kinds of laws,” said Swain.

Animal Welfare Society Honorary Secretary, Jean Munro, said during these times their inspectors were on duty 24/7 to fetch lost or injured animals and bring them to their shelter.

Munro said during the “celebrations” the number of strays and injured animals increased at least three times. Dogs can jump through glass windows or get horribly injured on fencing in their state of terror.

“There are owners who enclose their dogs or cats safely, or so they think – only to come home and find the animals missing and/or having harmed themselves badly in an effort to get away from the noise.

“Township animals can be impacted very badly, as horrible injuries occur when crackers are used incorrectly. Cats are just as seriously harmed as dogs, but are noticed less because they hide,” said Munro.

Munro said they were in favour of a complete ban, and to have adequate policing against offenders.

“Animals have extremely acute hearing so even if they are a few suburbs away from the noise, it still impacts them severely.

“Another point that should be made is that humans may enjoy a fireworks display for a limited time; but the fireworks show that lasts only a few minutes can affect an animal for much longer – some pets disappear and are never found.

“Somewhere they are dying of fear and starvation while suffering the stress of being lost. The lucky few get picked up and brought to us,” Munro added.

Well-known gang member sentenced to life INDABA REPORTER THE SAPS efforts in fighting gang-related crimes and gangsterism in the city’s northern areas were once again rewarded when a well-known gang member was sentenced to life imprisonment at the PE High Court on Tuesday, 31 March.

Franklin Louw (39) was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, 15 years for illegal possession of a firearm, seven years for attempted murder and four years for the illegal possession of ammunition. All the sentences will run concurrently.

According to police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, Louw was involved in a shooting incident on the 24 June 2013 in Drew street, Schauderville, Gelvandale.

The deceased, Wayne Leonard (20), was working on a vehicle with his friend when the suspect came walking towards them with a fire arm and started to fire shots at the deceased and his friend. The friend managed to escape, but the deceased collapsed in the street.

The suspect walked up to him and shot him. The suspect then went after the friend and fired at him, injuring him in the leg.

Thorough investigation by the Gang Task Team, led to the identification of the suspect and in November 2014 Louw was arrested. He was denied bail and was remanded in custody for the duration of the trial.

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt General Celiwe Binta commended the Gang Task Team for the conviction and sentence of the well-known suspect.

“This is the outcome of the commitment and hard work of dedicated investigation officers and other specialized disciplines of the SAPS. I welcome the sentences because combating of gang-related crimes and criminal activities is a priority of the South African Police Service and such a sentence will certainly help deter people from committing such crimes.”

She further implored communities to work together with the police. “Be the eyes and ears of the police and report crime and criminal activities at all times,” she said.

Visible policing high on agenda for Human Rights Month NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the SAPS in New Brighton closed Human Rights Month on a high note with visible policing high on the agenda, said police spokesperson Constable Mncedi Mbombo.

“We had a very successful Human Rights Awareness Day at Nangoza Jebe Community Hall in New Brighton on March 19. About 600 community members, most of which were women, attended the event,” said Mbombo.

He added that the police were engaged in Operation Lockdown as part of a crime prevention strategy in which they visit shopping

malls and do roadblocks as well as stop and searches.

The Dog Unit and Flying Squad also made unannounced visits to two shopping complexes in New Brighton.

The SAPS helicopter was also used as part of the campaign.

“We managed to arrest 16 people mainly for traffic fines, ranging from driving without licence, drunk driving and driving cars not fit for the road,” said Constable Mbombo.

From 1 March to 30 April, members of the SAPS are involved in Operation Paseka.

The operation was intensified during the Easter Weekend with more traffic officers deployed as part of the Arrive Alive campaign.

Help sought to locate stolen air force museum collectables ANNA PAUW THE police are asking the public to be on the lookout for rare collectables following two break-ins in one weekend at the air force museum in Forest Hill.

Considerable damage had been done as glass display cases were broken in order to steal medals.

The medals with which Lt Leendert Ryneke was decorated during the 1940s, were among the irreplaceable items stolen during break-ins on Friday, March 27 and Sunday, March 29.

Ryneke, who retired in PE after having left the air force, was found murdered in his flat in Kabega Park on June 21, 1997.

Back then it was reported that he was a jewellery dealer at the time of his death and that robbery had been the probable motive for his murder.

A reward of R20 000 was offered at the time for anyone with information which could have led to the arrest of the murderer.

According to an article in Die Burger, Ryneke had bought jewellery to the value of R14 000 just days before his death. The jewellery was not found in the flat where he had been stabbed to death.

Police spokesperson, Capt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg, said it would take a bit of research to establish whether anyone had ever been arrested in connection with Ryneke’s murder.

According to Capt. Mark Kelbrick, curator of the air force museum and spokesperson for the air force in the Eastern Cape, Ryneke’s medals, another medal, a clock made of a wooden aircraft propeller and some cash had been stolen.

Kelbrick said the police were investigating the case and there were a number of leads.

“A clear fingerprint was found on the scene and the police are also in possession of the names and contact details of two suspects.”

Kelbrick said the burglaries were a big blow to the museum.

According to him the thieves either knew exactly what they were taking or they had

no clue at all.

“The things that were taken would be difficult to sell without raising suspicion. There are many things here they could have taken instead which would have been easier to sell.

The stolen goods would definitely be of value to collectors.

The museum will now have to rely on donations to repair the damage. Additional safety measures have been put in place.

REPORTER POLICE are investigating the murder of an ADT Armed Response Officer who was killed on Saturday, April 4, while on duty in Booysens’ Park.

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Alwin Labans, said ADT officer Christopher Adams was shot twice in the neck around 2am. He died on the scene.

The suspect stole 15 rounds of ammunition, the victim’s cellphone and radio. At time of going to print no arrests had yet been made.

Bay women unite to beat 67 blankets target

LIZEKA TANDWA WITH over 70 blankets already in the bag a community of women from across the Nelson Mandela Bay are taking their love for crocheting further as they pledge to have over 100 blankets for the 67 blankets initiative.

Ambassador Carol Watson said over 70 people have come on board taking part in the now international initiative, to donate blankets to the needy across the Bay as part of the 67 blankets project for Nelson Mandela Day. Watson said while they were closer to their target of a 100 blankets, they were still in need of donations. “We need donations of blankets and wool to help the ladies reach the target we have set for ourselves.”

According to Watson, an average ball of wool costs between R16 and R18 and crocheting one square can take over 12 hours when fully dedicated.

As part of this drive, Watson said they were also selling raffle tickets for R10 with one of her most luxuriously designed blankets as the grand prize. Proceeds will go to their three identified charities, namely Thamsanqa Home which caters for abandoned kids, Cleary Park

“We have identified these three programmes which will benefit greatly from these donations. These blankets will go to kids as young

as a newborn to warm them up during the winter.

“One of the charities that I am passionate about is the Cleary Park clinic where newborns

don’t even have clothes or blankets. So this can go a long way in helping the little ones,” said Watson.

Another ambassador, Jacquene Anderson, said they welcomed anyone who wished to take part in the initiative.

“This is to honour the late great president and we do this by respecting his love for humanity.

“We want everyone to join us; we have groups reaching as far as Cradock who regularly call us about their progress.

“This is also fun for us as we meet once a month in each other’s homes and discuss issues affecting us.”

Among the groups headed by both Anderson and Watson are the Knit-knitters, a group of 15 ladies from Cheshire Homes in Summerstrand who regularly meet and knit together as part of the 67 blankets project.

Anderson said donations of wool or blankets can be dropped off at Plant and Pool shop at 6th Avenue Walmer.

Donors are urged to also leave their names, contact details and addresses.

General Motors SA’s women are doing it for themselves BETTIE GILIOMEE A WOMEN’S Council has been established by General Motors SA to ensure that their female staff members are living out their motto of “Doing it for ourselves”.

Since the Council’s launch in South Africa in August last year, focus groups have been conducted among male and female employees to determine the issues affecting women working at the motor manufacturer. These focus groups included analyses of women employees’ strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities.

A total of 13.8% of employees at GMSA are women.

According to Luaneta Logie, GMSA Human Resources Manager, the focus of the Council is empowering their female employees through meaningful and impactful activities.

As part of promoting a culture of inclusiveness their activities are, however, open to both male and female employees.

According to Logie the council will be facilitating different activities which will not only be aimed at empowering women in the workplace, but on a personal level too. These activities include mentoring, training and workshops.

Two workshops that have recently been

held were a “Driving for Divas” at Aldo Scribante and a “Work Life Balance Lunch” by Deirdre Elphick-Moore from the Office Coach.

At the Driving Divas workshop the participants were reminded of safe driving habits.

Presented by “Driving in Heels” columnist, Vuyi Mpofu, the workshop covered safety aspects such as using car seats appropriately, not using one’s mobile phone whilst driving and how to be vigilant and avoid becoming a potential hijack target.

The workshop ended with practical driver training on the track and on the open road, led by advance driving expert, Tschops Sipuka.

Safe driving tips by Vuyi Mpofu Vuyi was especially critical about texting and speaking on a cellular phone whilst driving. She said that any distraction while driving is an accident risk as there are so many things on the road to be vigilant of.

“There are three types of distractions, visual, manual and mental distractions and texting involves all three.”

She added that drivers who are distracted by their phones are also hijack targets. “Hijackers often target women, especially those who drive alone and who are not alert when standing still at red lights. Women often check their phones and touch up make-up when standing still. Meanwhile hijackers check their moves

Balancing work and home life Deirdre Elphick-Moore discussed the various roles people fulfil and gave advice on finding a way of fulfilling these roles, which are all interconnected, in a meaningful way.

It included advice on dealing with guilt by recognising the type of guilt and letting go of guilt that doesn’t serve a purpose or making changes to address guilt which is rational.

She gave tips on how to start small habits to bring about change, to accept one’s mistakes

and move on, and to learn from past behaviour.

Action steps included identifying what is important and communicating one’s needs.

She also advised women to respect their own boundaries as they cannot expect others to respect them if they are not doing so themselves.

Another important bit of advice was to differentiate between urgent and important, as something that is urgent is not necessarily important. “Ask yourself when something urgent needs to be done: ‘If I do not do this now, will this matter 6 months from now?”.

Beauty is big business for Nondumiso

The Hope Factory’s Nondumiso Kafile has turned beauty into a business.

WITH business mentorship of The Hope Factory, Nondumiso Kafile said she has learned business skills that have prepared her for life changing success in a short time frame.

“If I left the Hope Factory programme tomorrow, I know I’ll still be successful because of all that they’ve taught me,” said Kafile, owner of Ndumi’s House of Beauty salon.

Kafile’s entrepreneurial journey began as a nail bar and is now a full-service beauty salon.

She opened Ndumi’s House of Beauty in 2011 in her garage at home. A year later she moved to new premises, renting a container on the side of a busy main road in Motherwell.

Kafile realised in 2013 that she needed a bigger space and in December 2014 she made the move.

She said, “My clientele was growing quicker than I had anticipated and I knew then that I needed a new and bigger space and at the same time to expand the services I offered.”

She evaluated her market and opted to set up an additional branch at First Avenue, Newton Park. The move to a suburban area was strategic – she chose a location close to a busy mall and office blocks to attract new customers and for the convenience of her regular clients.

“The new store caters for my customers who had to travel long distances to Motherwell. The new shop is in a central location – convenient for those travelling with a taxi or car,” she said.

The opening didn’t come without challenges

however. The new branch was supposed to open on the 1st of December 2014; however, her suppliers disappointed her. “They didn’t deliver most of the equipment on time for the grand opening.

After four days of waiting, I decided to open the store and use the equipment I had on hand and began working,” she explains.

For Kafile customer service is a priority. She phones every customer after an appointment – she values this feedback as it helps her to improve her service.

“If a customer is not happy with the results, we ask them to come back to fix the problem,” she says. This attitude has helped grow the business. Customer’s referrals and social media has created a buzz about the business and more people are walking in each week to be pampered.

Her services include make-up, massages, waxing, nails, facials and more.

She’s so busy that she’s employed a young graduate to work at the salon in Motherwell while she focuses on the new shop. “I’ll need to hire more people on a part time basis. We are entering a busy period with Matric Dances starting soon, so I’ll need more help,” she says.

Besides running a successful business, she’s also studying for a Diploma in Beauty Therapy at Total Concept Beauty Academy. Thereafter, she plans to continue with her studies with an Aromatherapy course. This will help expand her services further. – REPORTER

Traditional Mohair amabhayi sells like hot cakes NCEBA DLADLA SIVUYILE Tshaka (28) and Sivuyile Nyarashe (26), both of KwaNobuhle, do not only share the same name. They have turned their shared business idea, energy and enthusiasm into a flourishing business.

They are the owners of iBhay’ alambathwa, selling mohair products made by the company Hinterveld.

These include traditional amabhayi, scarves, shawls, and imibhinqo which they market to a very specific African clientele – namely the Oomakoti and oomama (newlyweds and mothers).

According to Tshaka, the name of the business is derived from the adage, ibhay’alambathwa, lambathwa ngabalaziyo which literally means “only those who know it - should cover themselves with ibhayi” - a small woollen blanket).

This also refers to iBhayi being Port Elizabeth – with them saying “don’t mess with it - rather stay away”.

In a country that is becoming very Westernised, the young duo is returning to their roots with aplomb.

“Traditionally, oomama like to throw some-

thing warm on their shoulders when going to formal or even traditional gatherings. This is more so koomakoti,” said Tshaka, the founder of the business.

According to them, mohair is the best quality fibre and very popular among their clients.

They have started small, using a garage to stock the goods and selling from the boot of a car at shopping malls and supermarkets.

“People buy the products on the spot. We also take orders and make sure that we deliver. The market is growing. We’ve even received orders from some of the churches,” said Nyarashe.

They use their clients for market research to find out which are the popular colours, products and sizes at any given time. They communicate this to Hinterveld who manufactures the products for them.

Their future plans include getting bigger premises from which to operate.

“Our plan is to move to a business area like a shopping complex where we’d expand our business and provide jobs to other young people,”said Tshaka.

Tshaka thanked Hinterveld’s head of marketing Jackie Gant for giving them the business opportunity.

Baywest Mall brings firsts to Port Elizabeth IT is official - the Baywest Mall on the Western outskirts of Port Elizabeth will be opening its doors on May 21.

The R1.7 billion mall is currently 96% tenanted, of which at least 85% of outlets will commence operations when the eagerly awaited centre opens to the public.

Centre management announced last week that it had secured major fashion and entertainment firsts for the province.

Cape retail, Baywest Mall general manager, Sonja de Necker, said the new brands would be accompanied by major national retailers whose bigger stores would carry a greater product catalogue for shoppers to choose from.

The major firsts include a Ster-Kinekor IMAX cinema, a Ster-Kinekor luxury movie experience, Cine Prestige, the British high street fashion brand River Island, Exclusive London footwear and accessory brand Dune,

Canadian lingerie label La Senza, Iconic British fashion brand Topshop, US baked goods sensation Cinnabon and popular global outlet The Bubble Tea Company.

According to her, the food court area with a seating capacity of approximately 400 will boast the largest big screen in the country (33m²).

Negotiations are still underway to secure the possibility of reinstating the Apple Express to ferry shoppers to and from the mall.

De Necker said that they were very supportive of the initiative and that they were having meetings with stakeholders for further discussions.

“At this stage it looks like we may have to approach a third party to assist with funding, since the current infrastructure needs upgrading.”

Retail outlets in the centre will trade till 19:00 from Sundays to Thursdays and till 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. – ANNA PAUW

TOP South African radio station, Umhlobo Wenene FM, is looking for presenters for their programmes, Zintle Zolishumi and the Agriculture Show.

This follows after the recent tragic death of well-loved presenter Saba Mbixane. He was the presenter of Lavuth’iBhayi, a traditional music progamme.

UWFM is an isiXhosa Public Broadcaster based in Port Elizabeth.

The station recently announced a new DJ line-up to keep their more than 5 million listeners educated, informed and entertained.

Nokubonga Maci, a popular presenter known as Blaq, has replaced veteran presenter Ntsiki Maposa.

Maci will be presenting a gospel programme “Seza Umphefumlo” on Sundays between 9am and 9.30 am.

Maposa will, however, not be lost to radio as he will be producing Umxholo kuMhlobo, the Monday to Friday 12 am to 3am discussion programme.

UWFM Marketing Manager Faith Mtyida said Blaq is not a new face in the media world. Her radio career dates back to 2005 when she started as a presenter at their sister radio station, Tru FM. Mtyida added that the station would see the inclusion of Lunga Kepe, a former radio Transkei practitioner who would be presenting the show “Sisemathandweni” alongside the evergreen Tsidi Monteiro between 11am and 1pm weekdays.

The children’s education programme every Saturday morning between 9am and 9.30 am will be beefed up with the inclusion of a new presenter, Lisakhanya Mehana.

Talent search at Greenacres Shopping Centre THE Greenacres Shopping Centre will host its first ever community-building showcase for local junior talent between the ages of 5 and 13, from April 13.

The Acres of Talent competition is open to any child gifted in singing, dancing or any other performance-related talent such as the playing of musical instruments, reciting of poetry and acting.

The competition is for individual entries only, and no group entries will be accepted.

Organisers said entry forms would be made available at various selected schools and their information kiosk for those who wished to enter.

Greenacres marketing manager, Andiswa Gumbi, said they would start canvassing schools from April 13, in order to give them more details about the campaign, deliver entry forms and encourage entries.

Entry forms must then be delivered to their information kiosk by May 4.

Auditions will take place on May 9 in the Auditorium at Greenacres Shopping Centre, on the Mezzanine Level, next to Standard Bank.

Gumbi said 25 of the best performers from the auditions would be selected to perform at the Acres of Talent live event in the new food court at Greenacres Shopping Centre on Saturday, May 16 from 1pm to 2pm.

The three best performers on the Acres of Talent live event day will each be awarded Greenacres Shopping Centre gift cards valued at R10 000 for the first prize, R5 000 for the second prize and R3 000 for the third prize.

Madibaz cricket structures breed national stars MECER Madibaz Cricket Club are proving to be a force to be reckoned with as they have secured once again a place at the national club championships in Pretoria later this month, hoping to extend their local success to the national realm after being beaten in the final the last two years.

“We have a wonderful structure in place,” said Madibaz head coach Baakier Abrahams.

The club’s performances of late, which include a seventh straight premier league title for the First Eleven this season, with the second team finishing runners-up in the same competition, bears testimony to this.

“We will be playing against all the local league winners from across the country and this creates an amazing strength-versusstrength tournament to round off our season,” said Abrahams.

With alumni such as Simon Harmer, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson and Proteas coach Russell Domingo and assistant coach Adrian Birrell, the club is proving to be a platform from which talented players are launching their provincial and national careers.

Abrahams said that during the pre-season the club had focused on their processes and the brand of cricket they wanted to play.

“It was encouraging to see the players buy into those philosophies and in the process watch them grow and achieve some amazing things.”

Abrahams said the club was fortunate to have a crop of up-and-coming youngsters looking to make their mark, as well as experienced players leading from the front.

The latter include Eddie Moore and Brad Dolley, who have established themselves as part of the Eastern province Senior Provincial team, and David White, who has represented the SA A team and will be attending the CSA National Academy in June.

Abrahams said young players on the march were Matthew Christensen, Ngazibini Sigwili and team captain Lloyd Brown.

“I think the biggest benefit for players and staff is the professional manner in which the club is run and this makes the step up to the next level a lot easier.

“We hope to become the number one university team in the country, playing an exciting brand of cricket that will ensure our players become sought after by the various unions and franchises.

“We also have amazing sponsors in Mecer who have been with us every step of the way.”

NMMU cricket manager and deputy director of Madibaz Sport Riaan Osman echoed Abraham’s sentiments.

“We have several players on provincial duty each season and therefore it is imperative that we have depth in the club to ensure we remain competitive.” – REPORTER

Future football stars battle it out in MOFA Build It Junior League Easter Tournament SELBY MADIKANE FOOTBALL stars of the future battled it out during the MOFA Build It Junior Annual Easter Tournament finals held at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Easter Monday.

The tournament kicked off in knockout format on Good Friday.

During the finals, the exciting play kept fans on their feet.

Young Madrid U/9 took the honours when they beat Real Strikers U/9 with a score of 2-1

on penalty shootout following a goalless regulation time score.

Showville United Brothers U/11 handed a 3-1 defeat to Real Strikers U/11.

In the U/13 finals Ikamva Movers lifted the trophy when they beat Liverpool 4-2 on penalties after the 1-1 fulltime draw.

Manchester FC U/15 were untouchable when they vanquished Young Ideas 4-0 in their one-sided affair.

Executive committee motivates their players SELBY MADIKANE CONTINENTAL Express’ executive committee unanimously agreed to purchase track suits for their players and veterans recently.

Express, which is one of the Zakhele Football Association affiliates, have their sights set on winning the ZAFA Njeya Investments Premier League trophy.

According to Continental Express President, Xolile Jimmy Tinise, their senior team’s current form bodes well for them achieving their goal of winning this prestige trophy.

“We decided to motivate our players and award the team and its head coach, Elby Matiwane, for doing us very proud. The coach and the players fully understand that their mandate is to take the honours.

We as the club’s executive decided to purchase 40 track suits from our coffers.

“Our 30 player squad received 30 tracksuits and 10 track suits were given to six executive committee members and four committed loyal veterans. The track suits cost R18 000. We can see that the players’ morale has been boosted.” said Tinise.

Toto Jafta who is one of Continental Express executive members hailed their coach and his players. Jafta said that their senior team were working hard to accomplish their mission.

“Hard work and discipline is the recipe for succeeding. Our senior team is exemplary and their conduct is very good.

“We do not charge our players joining fees but any non-playing member is eligible to pay a R50 joining fee. We appeal to the parents to come in their droves when our team plays.” said Jafta.

United broke the ice when Lindikhaya Tunywa pulled a goal from a penalty spot in the first half. Early in the second half Professionals star Zukile Bazooka Mazula delivered a low shot that gave life to his side, thus beating United’s goalkeeper Lwandiso Gubayo to make matters equal.

Professionals took the game to United and as a result they took the lead when Nkosinathi Matsau Bastile scored a magnificent goal. Real City defeats Matta Milan NELSON Mandela Bay outfit Real City earned three vital points when they defeated Matta Milan 2-1 in their ABC Motsepe Second Division League clash at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Saturday.

City took the game to the visitors from the word go. Milan defenders worked overtime in the entire goalless first half.

In the second half City were more up to a good fight with their midfielder Nkosiyethu Ndzelani scoring the opening goal.

City piled more pressure on Milan resulting in Sandile Mazizi pulling a brilliant goal.

Milan’s goal came very late courtesy of Luyanda Mapasa.
