Chevrolet and Lighthouse Run bring Christmas to Missionvale The Lighthouse Run, which is supported by General Motors South Africa (GMSA) and the Chevrolet Ute Force, descended on Port Elizabeth in December last year and delivered an early Christmas to the children at the Missionvale Care Centre. The run comprised four women athletes running over 1 600 km along South Africa’s coast, from Umhlanga Rocks in KwaZulu-Natal to Paternoster in the Western Cape over a period of six weeks to raise awareness regarding women and child abuse. The initiative was also aimed at raising R1-million to assist victims of abuse. “Since setting out on 17 November we have covered 939 km over 19 days, and touched 19 lighthouses,” stated Retha Schutte, who came up with the concept and leads the Lighthouse Run, during their visit to the Missionvale Care Centre. “Our key aim is to shed light on abuse and, along with the four runners, we have a community service team that provides logistical support and assists the communities along the way.” The team is also supported by the Chevrolet

Ute Force, a team of skilled experts that travel around South Africa in specially branded “Ute Force” Chevrolet Utility bakkies completing extraordinary missions for needy communities. For the Lighthouse Run, the Ute Force sponsors the fuel, accommodation, logistical and marketing support, and the vehicles carry the team’s supplies. The Lighthouse Run crew enjoyed a welcome rest day in the Friendly City mid-way through their journey, and used the opportunity to bring Christmas cheer to 90 pre-school and primary school children at the Missionvale Care Centre. This exceptional facility was founded and is run by Sister Ethel Normoyle. Along with the privately run school, it provides a wide range of support to the residents of the impoverished Missionvale community. GMSA sponsored a wide range of entertainment for the kids for the day, including an enthralling magic show, clowns, jumping castles and face-painting, and each child was given a much-appreciated Christmas gift and party pack. “We’re extremely grateful to GMSA and the whole Lighthouse Run team,” Sister Ethel said. “There are many different forms of abuse, and we see so much of it in Missionvale. This project will certainly bring healing and love to those who need it most. You’ve also brought so much joy to our children with this very special Christmas party.” According to Herman Schutte, who is an emotional intelligence and conflict management specialist on the Lighthouse Run, this is just phase one of the project, which aims to create awareness around the Lighthouse Run brand, and the issues of women and child abuse. “Phase two takes it to the next level in 2013, and is based on three pillars, comprising logistical, legal and psychological support for victims of abuse,” he said. “We are creating a network of safe homes, attorneys and therapists in each of the major centres around the country to ensure that these three primary needs of victims of abuse are covered.” The Lighthouse Run is raising funds through donations, sponsorships, an SMS line and the sale of Lighthouse Run memorabilia – the latter including a book that will be published after this year’s run, documenting the remarkable journey that comprises 42 days and 42 lighthouses. A wide range of information is available on the Lighthouse Run blog: www.lighthouserun.co.za and their facebook page.

Eastern Cape film industry showcased on BayTV IT’S no secret that South Africa’s film industry is rooted in Johannesburg and Cape Town. But what few people know is that there is a budding industry in the Eastern Cape, with Port Elizabeth establishing itself as a television production and training hub, poised to take on the big boys.

Busi Nako (left), presenter of the new TV series about the Eastern Cape film industry, Film@Bay, with Executive Producer, Denise Roodt. The series started airing on BayTV on January 5. Photo: SUPPLIED

Starting from January 5 this year, established and emerging filmmakers in Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounds, are showcased on community television channel, BayTV. The series, aptly entitled Film@Bay, is flighted at 8pm on Saturdays, with repeat broadcasts at 10.30am on Sundays and 4pm on Mondays. BayTV is now also available to a national audience on channel 260 on DStv.

Among the established filmmakers featured on Film@Bay are the awardwinning film director David Lister and renowned film producer André Scholtz. Other guests interviewed on the show include Andrew Mackenzie, Creative Director at Boomtown Strategic Brand Agency; Richard Ahlfeldt, Managing Director of Rooftop Productions; Mike Vincent of Jasmine Films; Paul Ruschenbaum, owner of 4x4 Adventure Videos; emerging television director, Siviwe Besman, and Prof Jean Greyling and Dr Dieter Vogts of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. The series also features short films produced by emerging filmmakers and provides filmmaking tips for those interested in entering the industry.

Film@Bay’s Executive Producer is Denise Roodt, owner of The Media Workshop, a media production and training company based in Port Elizabeth. “There are so many talented people doing great work in the Eastern Cape, but yet the national perception appears to be that nothing is going on here. I wanted to change that. “Film@Bay features production companies producing award-winning work of an international standard - from commercials and promotional videos to documentaries and adventure sports programmes. We also highlight ground-breaking animation projects at the NMMU. “But, for me, the short films produced by students and interns are the most inspiring. They prove that there

Crowds mesmerized by Boardwalk water feature VISITORS and residents flocked to The Boardwalk Casino & Entertainment Complex this holiday season with its new multimedia water feature on the lake as one of the main attractions. The multimedia water spectacular centrepiece will be a permanent feature at The Boardwalk. According to The Boardwalk general manager, Clifford Ngakane, the themed multimedia shows, which will continue after the holiday season, will reflect the seasons and celebrate special months. The water feature consists of over 80 pumps capable of shooting a thousand tons of water an hour through around 100 individual water jets. Over 800 lights add colour to the nightly displays, while multimedia presentations are shown on a 144 square metre screen created

from water. At its climax, the strongest jet is able to shoot water 60 metres into the air – making it one of the highest fountains in Africa. Over 35 kilometres of cables and pipes connect the different elements of the fountain. Designed by French fountain specialists Aquatique, the fountain is part of a R1-bn investment at the Boardwalk, which includes a 140room five-star hotel, international convention centre, smoking casino and upgraded retail precinct. Aquatique has installations all around the world, including some of the favourite water attractions in Euro Disney, Disneyworld USA, Universal Studios, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, the Bubble Show in Macau (China), and Le Lido in Paris, France.

WELL’S Estate resident Lubabalo Kondlo was recently crowned as the second best draughts player in the world. Kondlo represented South Africa in this mind game at the Sport Accord World Mind Sport Games in Beijing from December 13 to 19. In this competition he faced off against the world’s best players such as Alexander Moiseyev of the United States of America (USA), Michelle Borghetti from Italy and Ronald King of Barbados. According to Mind Sport South Africa (MSSA) President Colin Webster, none of these competitors were an easy mark. Alexander, who ultimately won the tournament, is currently the ‘3 move’ World Champion and Ronald King is the “Go-As-YouPlease” (GAYP) World Champion. Draughts is also known as Checkers in the US. “I grew up playing the sport which I learnt from the great minds and academics in New Brighton,” said Kondlo proudly. He was only 7 years old when this mind game was introduced to him while attending Masangwana Primary School. “There were local clubs in our townships then,” he said, adding that New Brighton had Vulindlela, KwaZakhele had All Stars while KwaNobuhle had Vukani. “These clubs produced great thinkers and helped us develop the love of the game,” said Kondlo. After passing matric at Cowan High School, Kondlo went to participate in the sport in Gauteng as a member of the Merabe Club where he read books and mastered the game. “But my big break came in 2007 when I went to the US to play and win

SUBS make Tembu Royals run for their money SELBY MADIKANE FOOTBALL was the winner during the SAFA Eastern Cape Nedbank games when Swartkops Valley United Brothers (SUBS) lost 1-0 to the high flying Tembu Royals at Jabavu Stadium late last month. SUBS did not show any respect to Royals as they threw everything into the game from the outset. SUBS striker Njongo Ntsundwana and skipper Luthando Matiwane gave the visitors’ defence a headache. Both sides could not

break the ice until the end of the first stanza of the game. SUBS started where they left off in the second stanza but Royals goalkeeper, Langeni Chansa Gogo, stood his ground. In the dying moments SUBS’ poor marking gave Royals’ midfielder Solomzi Solly Mhlana an opportunity to score his side’s winning goal. Drama occurred when both sides ended the game with 10 men owing to red cards awarded to SUBS defender Aya Nkohla (two yellow cards) and the Royals goalie (for bad language, according to referee).

According to Siyanqoba Community Sport Development Club President Yster Xatasi, their club’s primary objective is to introduce scarce sporting codes to the youth with the aim of preparing them for topflight stages. Yster highlighted that their club was funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund

Yster also stated that their club was a solution to South African sport development despite the fact that they did not get cooperation from the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture. The club treasurer Sityebi Mankazana said none of the government sports departments was willing to lend their hand to help their club grow. Mankazana said that their club consisted of athletics, cycling and swimming teams.
