Police Commissioner brings new wheels NCEBA DLADLA
T
HE National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) General Riah Phiyega visited Nelson Mandela Bay last Thursday to hand over new vehicles to the local Police for better service to the communities and more visible policing. General Phiyega, who was accompanied by an entourage of senior police officials from the province, started in Motherwell where she handed over 32 vehicles to the K9 Unit, Flying Squad, Serious and Violent Crimes units as well as the Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit. Phiyega said the hand-over was in the spirit of the Batho Pele principle (putting others first) by addressing the community’s need for a safe area. She said the vehicles would enhance visible policing in the community. She also visited the home of the twoyear old boy who was raped and murdered by a 16-year old boy in Sowetoon-Sea as well as the KwaDwesi Shopping Centre. “I have come to let you (the people) know that as the police we care for your safety. You must also take care (especially during the festive season),” said Gen. Phiyega. She added that the police were doing their utmost to fight crime in the metro and province but were disturbed by the shortage of vehicles. She said she hoped that with the new vehicles a lot more arrests would be made. “We have come to hand over these vehicles allocated to the province in order to enhance the service delivery
capacity of stations and units in the province. According to provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Marinda Mills, General Phiyega spoke to the family of the deceased boy and gave them hope. Gen. Phiyega also congratulated the police for their investigation which led to the arrest and imprisonment of the perpetrator. On the topic of the 16 days of activism against women and children abuse campaign, the national commissioner called everybody, and especially men, to stop the scourge whenever it reared its ugly head. General Phiyega was welcomed by the residents at KwaDwesi Shopping Complex as she mingled with them among the shops. She also posed with many residents who wanted to have photos taken with her on their cellphones. “I am so happy I took the picture with her. I love her. She’s a very tough woman but so nice,” said Nomhle Tsengiwe (80) of KwaDwesi Extension. “I am happy she came. I hope the number of rapes and abuse will drop tremendously,” said Zukiswa Mata (42) from Township Zwide. Mkhululi Gqirana (60) of KwaMagxaki was not lucky. He could not speak to General Phiyega “and tell her to instruct police to protect us from our own children (thugs). Otherwise, we’re going to take the law into our own hands,” Gqirana said Also not lucky was Simphiwe Jonas (32), a police reservist of Kwazakhele. “I wanted to ask her when the the reservists are going to get full-time employment. I’ve been a reservist for six years whilst I have passed matric. Age is against some of us. We need employment,” said Jonas.
