TWO BABIES DIE ALLEGEDLY OWING TO INJECTION

Legal action over deaths of babies

HE parents of two baby girls who died within hours of each other after allegedly receiving an injection by the same nurse in Dora Nginza Hospital, have filed a lawsuit of R2 million against the Department of Health.

The parents of babies Lilonke Zondani (6 weeks) and Asiphile Dada (2) claim that the children were injected by the nurse on duty with the wrong medication that proved lethal. The incidents occured in January this year.

Lilonke’s grieving mother, Yandisa Zondani from Walmer Township, said she had taken her 6 week old infant to the hospital after her child became ill rejecting breast milk on December 31.

Zondani said the hospital ran several tests and diagnosed her with a minor lung infection. Baby Zondani was admitted to the hospital’s paediatric ward and was responding positively to treatment.

An emotional Zondani said hours before her baby was meant to be discharged on January 8 she witnessed a nurse inject medication. The baby died shortly thereafter.

No detail on the cause of death was, however, given by the hospital.

“What hurts the most is that these people did not give us an explanation nor did they even say sorry for my baby. She died and they just brushed it off like nothing happened,” said Zondani.

Zondani said the hospital further went on to bungle the location of the remains of the baby, saying she was taken to Mount Road mortuary then later to New Brighton mor-

tuary only to find that her child was still at Dora Nginza hospital.

“The insensitive way the hospital treated us is still painful. We had to travel all around the city looking for my child’s body only to find that she was in Dora Nginza hospital all along,” said Zondani.

Zondani said after much protest by the family the hospital agreed to pay for some of the funeral expenses. “Even the funeral arrangement seemed thoughtless on the side of the hospital. They refused that we take part in the arrangements even though our customs do not comply with their way.

We did not have a say in the choice of my child’s coffin and they refused any input from us saying they would arrange it their way,” an emotional Zondani added.

The parents of the other baby, Asiphile Dada, declined to talk to Express Indaba.

Attempts to get comment from the attorneys Egon Oswald Attorneys who filed the lawsuit on behalf of the parents, were also unsuccessful.

Dora Nginza hospital has been plagued with lawsuits. In 2011 it was reported by a national newspaper that the hospital was facing lawsuits of up to a R100 million, many from parents whose babies died or were severely disabled after flawed birth operations.

“That hospital is a death sentence for babies. Another lady told me her twin babies also died at the hospital last year. No one cares about the loss and hurt that we feel as parents. I cry myself to sleep every night because I will never see my only baby again,” said Zondani Eastern Cape Health spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, said he could not comment on issues that are before the courts.

Sinam says domestic violence is gradually taking its toll on members of KwaNobuhle community. And if the scourge was not addressed, it would continue to break up family units and harm children.

According to Sinam, Domestic Violence or Gender-based Violence (GBV) knows no

boundaries. “It is everywhere, among the rich and poor, learned or illiterate, in the poverty-stricken shacks or in the affluent suburbs”.

An example of this is a recent case of a church bishop physically abusing his wife.

“The man would beat his wife on Saturday evening, and expect her to lead in song during the service on Sunday,” said Sinam without mentioning the names of the couple.

According to Sinam a case had, however, been opened with the police.

It is alleged that some members of the church had been noticing that something was wrong with their leaders. The bishop’s wife

would shake in fear in church whilst the Bishop was preaching.

“What is worse, when social workers took the woman to a place of safety, the man allegedly drank poison claiming he could not survive without his wife, and mother of his children.

According to Sinam, that is typical behaviour of an abuser. “He shows total dependency on the abused only to satisfy his own selfish needs.

“The couple has been married for more than 18 years and the alleged abuse has been going on for about 10 years,” said Sinam who has tried to provide counselling to the duo.

Zuma applauds progress in women empowerment and development NCEBA DLADLA PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma officially opened the Africa for African Women’s Conference held at the Boardwalk International Convention Centre (ICC) in Port Elizabeth on Sunday, March 8.

The opening of the two-day conference was held to coincide with the International Women’s Day on March 8.

The theme of the conference was “Locating Women at the Centre of Global Economy for Sustainable Development: Make it Happen”.

President Zuma said the conference was quite opportune, as it looked at the African Union (AU) Declaration which is The Year of Women Empowerment and Development.

The plan, the president said, was to build a continent where people’s development and specially women took centrestage, as this, was the time for the advancement of women empowerment and development.

“This is a call for transformation of leadership in all spheres; politically, economically and socially,” said Zuma, adding that transformation should include women in the rural areas, to ensure they get full access to financial institutions.

Strides have been made in women empow-

erment and development, said president Zuma, adding that the appointment of Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma as the AU president, was but one example.

“The continent is full of women Ministers and Parliamentarians but is moving a bit slowly in appointing a woman head of state, compared to other regions,” said Zuma.

Zuma, however, stated that South Africa was leading in the advancement of women compared to other African countries. He made mention of women’s access to primary education that is exceeding the Millennium Development Goals while women attending primary, secondary and tertiary education had improved significantly.

In all that, the president said education was central to the South African government. To this end, he applauded the role played by the private sector in promoting the advancement of young girls through the “Take a Girl Child to Work Programme” which provides young girls with working experience.

“The SA government has taken a proactive stance to ensure that in addition to the numerical targets we have achieved, we get high educational outcomes,” said Zuma, adding that an investment in women’s education is an investment in the nation.

SANCO speaks out on KwaNobuhle house eviction NCEBA DLADLA THE Local branch of the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in Uitenhage has spoken out on the eviction of resident Nomathamsanqa Magwa from her Rebe Street house, KwaNobuhle recently.

Express Indaba reported how the Magwa family and four other families were evicted by the sheriff of the court in separate incidents and how Public Order Police Services (POPS) members allegedly shot stun grenades as the residents reportedly tried to stop the sheriff from executing his duties.

“Because of our silence on the matter, as SANCO, we fear we could be misconstrued as being passive and not involved in our residents’ struggles. The truth is, we are involved and aware of what is happening with the house at Rebe Street,” said Chairperson Malaki Rawula.

That particular eviction, according to Rawula, was legitimate, but could have been avoided.

“As SANCO, we know that Magwa rented the house from its original owner, Thembisile Kota, who has since died. But before he died, Kota sold the house to Mkhize Lupondwana,” said Rawula. According to Rawula, SANCO was not surprised that Magwa was unable to produce a Title Deed to prove purchase of the house, something that Lupond-

“We have seen Magwa renovating and beautifying the four-roomed house whilst Kota was still alive, but sick in hospital. At the time, we did not know that there was no

sales transaction signed between him and Magwa,” said Mandela Madzwili, local SANCO acting secretary, adding that in trying to solve the impasse, since last year, they have tried in vain to ask Magwa to show a Deed of Sale document, Title Deed

or at least an Affidavit to show she paid for the house.

“I’d like to confirm that I bought the house in question from Mr and Mrs Kota in September 2012 and the transaction was set for March 2013,” said Mkhize Lupondwana, adding that Kitching Attorneys facilitated the process of the house’s registration in his and his wife’s names.

“Mrs Magwa was given a notice to vacate the premises on a number of occasions. But she failed to do so until we received a court order to evict her,” said Lupondwana.

Lupondwana added that he had meetings with Magwa and the local structures trying to negotiate with her to rent the house from him – because he felt sorry that she, a woman and mother with children, had to lose a place to stay after so many years of occupancy, but Magwa would not listen.

“She said this is her house but she can’t produce papers to back her claim,” said Lupondwana.

This was corroborated by SANCO. Said Rawula, “Magwa’s eviction could have been avoided, had she spoken the truth about the house – that she thought she had inherited it after the passing of Kota, not knowing that Kota had already sold the house to Lupondwana.

Attempts to ask Magwa for comment were unsuccessful.

The planned cluster will be located in Zone 14 of the Coega IDZ, which currently stretches across 2 086 hectares of land.

“Industrial clustering for mobility industries is an accepted form of economic organisation across the world,” said Dr Ayanda Vilakazi, CDC head of Marketing and Communications.

“The existing expertise, skilled labour and logistics services from the Eastern Cape’s automotive and manufacturing industries are important strategic advantages that can support the development of aeronautical and aerospace manufacturing in the region,” added Dr Vilakazi.

“The CDC is perfectly endowed with skills, resources and world-class infrastructure at the neighbouring deep seawater Port of Ngqura, to be part of the global commercial aircraft manufacturing industry.

“Included in our plans is the construction of the cargo/industrial airport that can serve aeronautical and aerospace industrial manufacturing.

“Subsequently, this will also offer tenants and investors in the Coega IDZ an immediate facility for air transport, which has been well received by the industry with Letters of Intent and Expression of interests already indicated,” concluded Dr Vilakazi.

Hundred candles needed to ignite careers BETTIE GILIOMEE THE NMMU Trust is hoping to have 100 candles lit in March as part of its Bursary Legacy Campaign which is currently sponsoring the studies of two students.

The candles which can be bought at R500 each, will ensure that the two NMMU students, Sakhumzi Dukwe and Siviwe Mbele will have funding for their final year of tuition.

Dukwe (19) is studying towards a career in Psychology, while Mbele is studying a BSc Information Technology.

According to Renita Affat, Acting CEO of the NMMU Trust, the Light a Candle Ignite a Career Bursary Campaign is not merely a bursary, but

an empowerment programme. “Its essence is uniting people towards making a difference. Together we can uplift our community and change education in our Province,” said Affat.

“If you are a member of a book club, sporting team or church society, together the members of your group could raise funds in support of our Campaign.

“You could also invite the Bursary Legacy team to your company to present the campaign to your colleagues,” she said.

The campaign has also received support from top NMMU Alumni members such as Dr Hanningtone J. Gaya, who says it is important for those who have gained from studying in the Eastern Cape to give back to the community that looked after them while at University.

“It is also important to give to the least in our society. It is a privilege to do so,” said Dr Hanningtone J. Gaya who holds a PhD in Commerce in Business Management from NMMU and is the founder of seven lifestyle and business magazines in East Africa.

According to Affat the two students would also be grateful for mentoring and work opportunities during the holidays.

Non-profit college aims to empower and uplift BETTIE GILIOMEE THE moral degeneration of society especially amongst the youth and unemployment because of poor education has led a local teacher to combine his passion for education and religion by opening a non-profit college.

St Ambrose College in Richmond Hill was established in 2013 by Ralph Laing to educate and empower adults and help young people with learning problems.

According to Laing, the College is a nonprofit company that provides a service to the community through education, no matter what their religious affiliation may be.

The College relies on anonymous funders for its funding.

“Our main aim is to provide quality educational support for the community at large and a moral foundation for learners so that they can make the correct choices in life that will equip them to become responsible

course, which will start next year, they intend to offer students a year of preparation for university and career discernment.

“This year 2015 is the first phase of our educational programme which runs in the afternoon and evenings.

“Next year 2016 is the second phase of our programme where we will offer a Bridging Year on a full time basis, to prepare learners for university as too many learners fail first year at university,” he said.

According to Laing the two main reasons for this high failure right is that students cannot make the adjustment from school level to university and are making the incorrect career choice.

St Ambrose College’s tuition fees are R250 for registration and R50 a lesson.

From next year they will offer five matric learners from a disadvantage background free tuition.

NASA big wigs for Scifest Africa REPORTER VISITORS at this year’s Scifest Africa, South Africa’s National Science Festival, will have the opportunity to interact with a top-level NASA delegation including the American space agency’s Chief Scientist, Deputy Chief Technologist, Rosetta Mission Lead Project Scientist, and an astronaut who has logged more than 4,000 hours in space.

Participation by these scientists will focus on the John Webb Space Telescope, Mars Exploration Programme, New Horizons Mission, Rosetta Mission and NASA’s plans for a new era of space exploration.

Scifest Africa 2015, celebrating the theme “Science alight!” will be held in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape from 18 to 24 March.

Since astronomers are accustomed to measuring distances in light years, the theme will not be a strange concept in this, the United Nations International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies.

Organisers said one of the highlights of NASA’s presence at the festival will be a panel discussion at 6.30pm on March 18, featuring NASA Chief Scientist, Dr Ellen Stofan and NASA Rosetta Mission Lead Project Scientist, Dr Claudia Alexander, joined via Google Hangout from NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC by NASA As-

sociate Administrator: Science Mission Directorate and former astronaut, John Grunsfeld, as well as JWST Senior Project Scientist and Nobel Prize Winner, Dr John Mather.

While one would be forgiven for feeling rather intimidated, and even NASA admits the presence of these great minds in one space is a rare occurrence, this conversation is aimed at the general public and will invite questions from the audience.

Organisers said visitors to the festival will also have the opportunity to meet three drivers of the Curiosity Rover during a Google Hangout at 3pm on March 21.

The Curiosity Rover, a six-wheeled remotecontrolled vehicle that is currently navigating its way through the Gale Crater on the planet Mars, is sure to prompt many questions.

NASA astronaut, Dr Catherine Coleman, will make several public appearances during the festival, sharing her experiences on Space Shuttle Columbia and the International Space Station, and outlining NASA’s plans for a new era of space exploration. Coleman is particularly excited about NASA’s plans to send astronaut Scott Kelly to the International Space Station on a oneyear mission. This mission is set to be the perfect opportunity to learn about how a long stay in space affects the human body, as it will be possible to compare his medical data with that of his twin brother, Mark. Coleman says, “We will

learn about bone and muscle loss, the psychology of living in space for long periods of time, and the effects of space radiation on the human body.”

NASA Deputy Chief Technologist and Scifest Africa Advisory Committee Member, Jim Adams, returns to Scifest Africa with an update on the technologies developed for aeronautics and space exploration in 2015 that you can use in your everyday life, and will also discuss how the James Webb Space Telescope will use light to peer into the very depths of the Universe in ways that may allow scientists to see almost to the beginning of time A hot topic for discussion at Scifest Africa will be the New Horizons flyby mission past the dwarf planet Pluto set for July 14. Awakened from hibernation earlier this year, the 478 kilogramme space probe is hurtling toward Pluto and its five moons at an incredible speed of 50,000 km/hour. Brave little grils treated as beauty queens REPORTER ELEVEN brave little girls who suffer from life-threatening illnesses were treated as beauty queens by the Reach for A Dream Foundation last Friday.

On arrival at Eataly Restaurant, the red carpet was rolled out for them and the girls received five- star treatment and pampering from the professionals at Anew Your Hair.

Their eyes glowed and smiles widened when they saw themselves in the mirror after having their make-up done and nails polished.

When they were red carpet ready, former Miss PE Bianca Gerber (the Queen on the Day), taught them how to walk, talk and wave like a queen.

Thereafter each girl was crowned and walked the red carpet while her peers cheered her on. The eleven newly crowned queens then sat down for lunch and were spoiled with a goodie bag, muffins, croissants, cupcakes and pink lemonade.

The “Queen For A Day” project was created to treat girls to a day out of their hospital environment and crown them Queen For A Day. “Every girl dreams of being a beauty queen and so Reach For A Dream tries to fulfil this dream for all our special brave young ladies,” said Charne Blume, (RFAD PE branch manager). She said each girl was made to feel special and beautiful to ease the effect of their illnesses on their bodies and more importantly, their self-esteem.

“Not only did they feel special and pampered on the day, but the positive attention showered upon them helped create positive memories that will assist them throught the hard times presented by their illness,” said Blume.

Another purpose of the project was to raise the confidence and self-esteem of the girls who may feel embarrassed by their appearance as a result of their illness and/or treatment.

Television search for acapella talent to visit Bay REPORTER SABC1’s very first talent show dedicated to the art of a capella, The Sing Off SA, will be holding audios throughout the country in March.

Nelson Mandela Bay groups will have their opportunity on 25 and 26 March at the Savoy Theatre and Conference Centre in Adcockvale.

The search is aimed at a capella groups with voices that are as powerful as any musical instrument. A cash prize and a Sony recording contract is up for grabs.

Groups who would like to audition need to prepare three vocal performances – each no longer than three minutes. Groups might not perform all songs but should be prepared. All musical styles are accepted.

Choreography, creativity, and dress are encouraged to enhance the performance, but instruments and backing tracks will not be allowed.

Groups must be no bigger than 5 members.

The auditions will be held on Wednesday, March 25, from 2pm to 7pm and on Thursday, March 26 from 9am to 7pm.

‘Reggae Ambassador’ live at the One Blood Music Festival REPORTER INTERNATIONAL “Reggae ambassador” IQulah will be performing at the sixth annual One Blood Music Festival on Saturday, March 21.

IQulah stands for Integrity, Quality, Unity and Love for Africa as Home, and is known internationally as the Reggae Ambassador.

IQulah started his career in 1985 in Kingston, Jamaica. He will be performing in PE for the first time as the headline act for the annual One Blood Music Festival which will be held at the Grand Hotel in Central, Port Elizabeth.

In 1993 IQulah decided to spread his wings and perform all around the world, from Germany, Russia, the United States of America to various African countries. He quickly established himself as a legendary performer. He has collaborated with Stephen and Damian Marley and will be backed by the Azania Band from Cape Town at the One Blood Music Festival.

Boost for grassroots rugby REPORTER NELSON Mandela Bay Stadium operator Access Management partnered Eastern Province Rugby Union in a Corporate Social Investment initiative to hand over rugby kit and balls to the senior rugby team of the KwaZakhele-based Chubekile Senior Secondary School.

The handover took place in the Royal Lounge at the NMB Stadium on Friday, 6 March, before the Kings’ first game of the year against the Free State Cheetahs.

Access Management General Manager: Human Resources, Thuli Mtila who oversees CSI said, “I am so glad that we could assist Chubekile.

“These children could very easily have ended up associating themselves with the wrong crowd and getting into trouble but instead they chose to keep themselves occupied with sport.

“I am highly impressed with the dedication that the teachers put into developing these youngsters, albeit with very limited resources and it is only a pleasure for us to sponsor them with rugby kit for their senior team.”

Eastern Province Rugby Union were very eager to partner with Access on this project.

They donated much needed rugby balls to the school.

EPRU CEO Charl Crous said, “The development of rugby at grassroots level is a key focus for the EPRU and forms an integral part of our strategy”.

Access hosted the Chubekile Senior Rugby Team in a hospitality suite along with their coaches and the school’s Sports Committee.

The group were joined by six EP Kings players who fraternized with the team and encouraged them to work hard - not only on the field, but in the classroom too.

Chubekile rugby coach Mbuyiseli Koza, who coaches alongside his brother Mbulelo Koza, was delighted with the opportunity afforded his team. “This is the first time that most of these boys have ever been to this stadium.

“To be hosted in a suite and meet professional rugby players is something that they will treasure forever. I am sure that they are now more determined than ever to excel as a team,” said Mbuyiseli Koza.

Chubekile will take part in the Mali Tournament at Wolfson Stadium starting 20 March.

Mtila gave the team her word that she and her staff would be there to support them when they debut in their new kit.

Varsity Cup keeps the aggro on the field REPORTER VARSITY Cup is going one step further and putting its money where its mouth is against violence against women and children.

Players were hard at work at this year’s International Women’s Day which was celebrated on Sunday, March 8, with the theme to “Make It Happen”, with a focus on gender equality.

Varsity Cup said they were taking a stand to help raise awareness and make a tangible difference.

FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International has once again backed the #KeepTheAggroOnTheField campaign in order not only to help raise awareness of women and child abuse, but also assist shelters where they most need it: physically and financially.

Prior to the Varsity Cup and Shield seasons kicking off in February, Varsity Cup, through their sponsors, FNB and Steinhoff International, gave the participating universities funds for their chosen projects – on condition that the First-team players themselves were physically involved in lending a hand.

“These projects would not be possible without our corporate sponsors and for that we are eternally grateful, but getting the players actively involved helps others realise that lending a helping hand isn’t hard to do,” explains Xhanti Lomzi Nesi, Operations Executive at Varsity Sports.

The participating universities visited the earmarked shelters at the start of the season to show their commitment to making a real difference.

Players and coaches helped to give facelifts to a number of the facilities by doing everything from redoing kitchens to simple paint jobs and even a spot of gardening along with cash donations.

To further help raise awareness of the #KeepTheAggroOnTheField campaign, the FNB Player that Rocks (Man of the Match) of each game will wear pink shorts in the next fixture as Varsity Cup and its players continue to take a stand against genderbased violence and violence and abuse against children.

The project follows on from last year, when over R300 000 was donated to shelters nationwide.

At the start of the season in February, FNB Varsity Cup, presented by Steinhoff International, vowed to add their voices to the fight against women and child abuse. All 13 of the Varsity Cup and Shield universities accepted the challenge to identify a local shelter or organisation that counsels and supports abused women and children.

The money it donates is drawn from the Varsity Trust, a trust where corporate sponsor’s social investment money is pooled and distributed to the selected universities.

“We make sure that these funds reach the right people and that we’re actually making a difference in the fight against women and child abuse instead of just talking about it,” added Nesi.

Metro to hold EC Athletics championships at NMMU NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Metropolitan Schools Executive Committee will host the Eastern Cape High Schools Athletics Championships at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University this Sa-turday and Sunday March 13 to 14.

Committee chairman Wandile Aba, believes the seven districts of the province

will pick their best team ever in preparation for the national championships in Rustenburg in the Northwest Province from 25 to 28 March.

“Of course, as Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality, our hopes lie on Luxolo Adam, the U-19 men’s 100m, 200, and 400m athlete.

“The lad from Ndzondelelo High School in Port Elizabeth is our own Usain Bolt. He sends a chill down the spine whenever he

gets into the field to sprint,” said Aba. Mandela Bay would also be highly represented in the field events, according to Aba. The region also masters that area.

Meanwhile, Aba congratulated the Nelson Mandela Bay Primary Schools’ athletic team who performed well in the championships in East London.

“At the weekend we were in East London to pick a provincial team to enter the national championships in Germiston in Gauteng

from 19-21 March, and our team did us proud,” said Aba, making mention of Lathitha Nqebe, a Port Elizabeth sprinter who has a bright future ahead of him.

“Mandela Metro came number one as we brought 65 medals in total. We were followed

by OR Tambo and Amathohle Districts respectively.

“The competition was tough and I am proud to say that the Eastern Cape will be sending a strong team to Germiston.”

SUBS give gallant performance over La Liga SELBY MADIKANE SWARTKOPSVALLEY United Brothers (SUBS) gave a good account of themselves following their gallant 2-1 effort over La Liga FC in their ABC Motsepe Second Division at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Friday.

SUBS were like a house on fire but their counterparts put up a brave fight. SUBS right wing Sithembiso Mzambia Maloni posed some problems to La Liga defenders.

SUBS’ midfielder Aviwe Tise Venge failed twice to beat the La Liga’s goalkeeper, Sello Tsilo, who easily dealt with his efforts. The first half goal of SUBS goal poacher Vuyisani Masumpa separated the two sides.

The tempo of the game in the second half was extremely fast as both sides wanted

goals. Venge was relieved when he pulled a goal to increase SUBS’s lead to 2-0.

La Liga’s skipper Mlungisi Mdwebu, Anthony Cox, Sechaba Mofokeng and Teboho Thekiso caused difficult moments to SUBS defenders.

A perfect cross from Mdwebu was squeezed into the back of the net by Humphrey Vikilahle to make the final score 2-1.

La Liga threw many players forward in pursuit of an elusive goal but their opportunities went begging because SUBS’ goalkeeper, Lwando Nkohla, stood his ground.

Phethani helps Tomorrow Stars to win SELBY MADIKANE XOLISA Phethani helped Tomorrow Stars to overcome Shining Stars 1-0 in their entertaining MOFA Build It Premier League game at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday.

Tomorrow Stars took advantage of their opponents’ defence which looked sluggish in the initial stages of the game.

Tomorrow Stars exerted more pressure: subsequently some of Shining Stars defenders caused errors in the crucial areas of their territory.

Tomorrow Stars were awarded a free kick which was successfully converted into a goal by Phethani.

Shining Stars goalkeeper Wanda Myoyo fisted Phethani’s kick into his goals instead of collecting the ball. Soon after the goal Shining Stars played as a unit with their goalkeeper pulling top class saves.

The game came to a standstill when Shining Stars’ strikers and Tomorrow Stars’ goalkeeper Siyabulela Lama collided with each other in the second half with the former sustaining a head gash.

Both players received first-aid and they continued with the game. The game was exciting and the fans really enjoyed it.
