HILE the Eastern Cape is getting ready for the arrival of the remains of former president Nelson Mandela in Qunu on Saturday and a state funeral as never seen before in this country on Sunday, thousands of local mourners will get the opportunity to bid the SA icon farewell at a memorial service in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday from 9am. According to municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki, the Eastern Cape Premier Noxolo Kiviet and members of the legislature will be attending the memorial service. African National Congress Secretary General Gwede Mantashe will be delivering the keynote address. Mniki said the clergy representing IDAMASA and the Council of Churches will be handling the event expected to be attended by the Executive mayor Cllr Benson Fihla, Councillors, leaders from different political parties in the province and traditional leaders. MEC for Social Development and Special Programmes Pemmy Majodina, who is in charge of the event, has urged members of different denominations to wear their church uniforms
during the memorial service. Zahara, who postponed her Phendula Tour which was scheduled to take place at the Boardwalk last Sunday, will get an opportunity to sing the song she performs with the people’s poet, Mzwakhe Mbuli - dedicated to Madiba on Friday. Award-winning EC Gospel sensation Lusanda Mcinga will also take to the stage in honour of Madiba, as well as other local gospel groups. Eastern Cape Premier Noxolo Kiviet said in a statement over the weekend the performance and conduct of government, as well as the conduct of people of the Eastern Cape during this period will have a significant bearing on public opinion in the country and beyond, and all activities are therefore material to our province’s reputation. “We must honour Madiba with dignity and pride. The official mourning period and the State Funeral is an opportunity for all South Africans and the international community to mourn the loss we all feel – and to celebrate Madiba’s extraordinary life and contribution to all of humanity,” said Kiviet. “Let’s work together to make this period one in which we maintain the dignity and proud reputation of our country. “A great number of international visitors will make their way to our province to be part of me-
morial events and the State Funeral,” she said. Kiviet said that the province’s infrastructure, namely the roads, airports, public transport, stadia, and electricity,is ready. Umtata Airport will be exclusively utilised for landing of Heads of State only, while the two airports in PE and EL will be open to the VIPs and public and VVIPs attending the funeral will be driven by luxury coaches to Qunu to avoid a stampede on the N2. “Eskom has assured us that their electricity network in the area has been maintained since September and contingency plans/backup are in place in case of lapse. “Our economic network in the form of banks, telecommunications, retail shops, and media are ready to absorb the increased volumes this time. “Our hospitality sector is ready in terms of providing accommodation and tourism attraction led by Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency – a number of tourism information centre kiosks have been mounted around the province to make it easier for tourists and mourners to navigate our beautiful province,” she said. “Our Safety and Security cluster, including SAPS police and Traffic Officers, is ready. This Team will be backed up by a team of 3000 marshals,” she said. Since other public mourning activities and
the State funeral would not be accessible to everyone, the government have identified public viewing mourning areas (PVMAs) where the public can view footage of events. Mniki said residents who are unable to go to the memorial service on Friday or the funeral in Qunu on Sunday should not despair as there will be 13 Public Viewing Places available to assist during the events. “We want people to be part of the activities but are also against any stampede. Let our former president be given a farewell that he deserves without any loss of life and problems associated with his departing,” said Mniki. Public Viewing Places: • PE City area and CBD – City hall • Greenbushes Area – Kuyga Community Hall • Seaview Area – Seaview Community Hall • Colchester Area – Colchester Community Hall • Ibhayi Area – Daku and Nangoza Jebe Community Halls * Wells Estate Community Hall • Northern Areas – Booysens Park Hall and George Botha Sports Centre • Uitenhage Area – Town Hall, Allanridge and Babs Madlakane Community Halls • Despatch Area – Despatch Community Hall

According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu, Mcontsi was believed to have attended a funeral service in Street NU5 when he went missing. “He called his mother at about 8pm on the said date telling her that he was back from Cradock and was attending a funeral service at KwaManube Street in NU6 Motherwell,” said W/O Gwavu. At the time of his call, Mcontsi said he was first going to a house in Gxakra, NU5, also in Motherwell where there was another funeral. “Indeed both houses had funerals but he did not attend the funerals,” said Gwavu, adding that when he left the house at Gxakra Street he told the mourners he was going home but apparently changed direction and did not arrive home.
Mcontsi did not call again to say where he was. “His phone’s on voicemail,” said Gwavu, adding that police contacted his relatives in Cradock and were told that he was not there either. Anyone with information can contact Constable Thobani Maswana of Motherwell Detectives at: 0 041 4620730. * New Brighton police detectives are looking for information on the whereabouts of Lindumiso Mijako whom they believe could assist in a murder case they are busy investigating. According to W/O Dumile Gwavu, a man was stabbed in his upper-body at Ramaphosa Village in New Brighton on October 4. He died on the scene. The suspect was arrested, according to Gwavu, but members of the SAPS are still looking for vital information that could assist them in the finalisation of the case. “We need crucial information that we believe a witness (Lindumiso) Mijako could provide for the case to proceed,” said W/O Gwavu, adding that anyone with information about his whereabouts should not hesitate to contact W/O Walter Wait at 0 084 2678 315.

In some parts of the province, Ndabeni said, women were accused of being witches and killed while girl-children were forced into marriages with older persons through a past tradition of Ukuthwala. Reverend Lulama Ntshingwa spoke about the role of men in the Brothers for Life NGO whose responsibility was to empower men to take their place in making society free from any kind of violence against women and children.
“Not in my name, we say against abuse of women and children. And, against young boys dying in the bush in pursuit of the tradition of Ukwaluka (circumcision), not in my name,” said Ntshingwa, adding that Men for Change hold talks at Umhlobo Wenene FM every week. “As men we must make our homes places of peace, safety and security,” said Ntshingwa.

A warrior, a leader, a statesman, a hero to millions (the world). The father of Our Nation, the Pillar of our young democracy, he took on his shoulders the burden of building a better South Africa. Seyisi wins national dance competition 0SELBY MADIKANE STAFF and pupils of Seyisi Primary School are very proud of their traditional dance group called “The Progressive Kids” who took honours at the South African Dance Championships held at the Rustenburg Civic Centre in Rustenburg recently. According to the group mentor Vuyokazi Mbane, Seyisi won in the Small Group category in which they went home with a certificate of participation, winners’ trophy, an overall trophy and gold medals. Mbane said that they were surprised to see their school beating all the other participants. “These kids surprised me. It was a first time for our school to participate at
an event of that magnitude. But they were focused. It was not easy up there in Rustenburg,” said Mbane. Seyisi Primary School Principal Xoliswa Zikishe said the the school was overwhelmed with the results achieved despite their challenges. “We thought that the trip would not take place because it cost R1 805 for each learner for the whole trip and accommodation. It was very difficult but Mrs Nomonde Makupula played a phenomenal role in looking for financial assistance. We were very worried for those kids who could not go to Rustenburg owing to financial constraints. Out of 42 learners, only six learners went to Rustenburg,” said Zikishe.

NELSON Mandela Bay Community Television station BayTV has postponed its inaugural Annual Music Video Awards which were scheduled to take place at Cubana in Summerstrand tomorrow, Thursday, December 12. The station’s Lungile Nduvana said, “We have decided to postpone our first instalment of the BayTV Music Video Awards as we are mourning the sad passing of South Africa’s first democratically elected president Nelson Mandela.” Inspired by the hard work and dedication of local artists, the event, which will be celebrated for the first time in Nelson Mandela Bay and the Eastern Cape province, could wait, said Nduvane.
According to Nduvane, “We cannot be dancing to thumping music while South Africa and the rest of the world is mourning.” Nelson Mandela Bay’s performance by Zahara as part of her Phendula Tour, which was scheduled to take place at the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World Lawns on Sunday, was also postponed. “Owing to the untimely passing of South African and World statesman Nelson Mandela, the Zahara Phendula Tour has been postponed until further notice,” said Boardwalk General Manager Brett Hoppe. Hoppe said Zahara was joining hands with South Africa and the rest of the world in paying heartfelt respect to Madiba and his family. Ticket holders can get full refunds from Computicket.

pitch up for their fixture. The newcomers Sunrise Development also followed suit when they failed to honour their game against Motherwell Academy. Fans were treated to football of a high standard when Royal Bucs drew 2-2 with their neighbours Camper United at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium. Peace United earned a 3-2 hard win at home over Tomorrow Stars.
Megan Minaar is third dan.
A member of the S&K Karate Club in Mill Park Megan holds 3rd Dan Black Belt in karate and is the First Dan in Weapons in the Shorin-ryu Shorinkan style. Megan started the sport when she was 15 years old - for self defence. “My first reason for doing karate was selfdefence and that the sport should provide me with a form of exercise,” said Megan who does not miss training at Grey High School in Mill Park where S&K karate club is based. A Marketing Assistant at Ricochet Publishers in Central, Megan, who claims to like a structured programme, believes karate as sport has a form of structure. It keeps her fit and mentally alert. “It helps me with discipline and being in control of my body and what I do. I encourage everyone else to start karate or any form of martial arts,” said Megan proudly. “Megan is one of the best employees we have in the business. This had to be expected because of her involvement in karate. I make sure when I employ anyone here that at least he or she must have a black belt in karate,” said Ricochet Publishers boss Graeme Lund who himself is a Fourth Dan in Karate.
