SACP suspends top brass NCEBA DLADLA
N
okuthua Tetyana and Zilindile Tambo, two top figures in the South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Mbuyiselo Ngwenda District which covers the Nelson Mandela Bay area, have been suspended from the party. This announcement was made by SACP Provincial Secretary Siyabonga Mdodi. Mdodi said the decision to suspend the district’s Secretary and Chairperson respectively, for allegedly sowing divisions among the Reds and putting the name of the party in disrepute, was taken during a specially convened meeting of the Provincial Executive Commit-
According to Mdodi, the whole Mbuyiselo Ngwenda District Executive Committee had been disbanded and the PEC would in the meantime run the affairs of the district. “The PEC condemns in the strongest possible terms the attempts by members to disrupt the work of the SACP PEC Task team at Nango-
za Jebe Hall a few weeks ago,” said Mdodi, adding that a communiqué would be sent to ask those involved to give reasons why they should not be suspended. ANC Regional Secretary Zandisile Qupe said as members of the alliance they were not happy at all with the developments in the SACP
Mbuyiselo Ngwenda District but respect the autonomy of the party in dealing with its issues. Said Qupe, “We respect the decisions of the party and will work with whoever the SACP PEC deploys in the Nelson Mandela Bay region.”
Group stitches future together
We respect the decisions of the party and will work with whoever the SACP PEC deploys in the Nelson Mandela Bay region.’ ANC REGIONAL SECRETARY ZANDISILE QUPE tee (PEC) in East London last Thursday. “The PEC, after careful consideration of the report, expressed a dim view on the conduct of Comrades (Nokuthula) Tetyana and (Zilindile) Tambo. The PEC shared a view that both the comrades have played a huge role in sowing divisions within the SACP, its membership and our revolutionary alliance,” said Mdodi. Mdodi claimed the duo openly defied the SACP Central Committee and PEC decisions with regard to the alliance relations. He would, however, not be drawn into explaining further. “We can’t say more on the allegations because they still have to face the movement’s disciplinary processes,” he said. Mdodi said the suspension decision was communicated to the the two comrades. During their suspension, Tambo and Tetyana would not be attending any SACP meeting nor would they be issuing statements on behalf of the party.

K’Nobuhle crime concerns MEC NCEBA DLADLA THE latest South African Police Service (SAPS) statistics in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage leave a bad taste in the mouths of peace-loving members of the community. This according to Social Development and Special Programmes MEC Pemmy Majodina who spoke during her Department’s Indaba which coincided with the Back to School Campaign. This was attended by other Government Departments, Nelson Mandela Bay Councillors, SASSA, members of the church fraternity and members of the public at Babs Madlakane Community Hall last Wednesday. The MEC said KwaNobuhle had changed for the worse from the progressive township it used to be and quoted some of the latest SAPS statistics from the beginning of the year. Among these were murders (4), attempt-
ed murder (28), sexual crimes (159), theft of motor-vehicles (70), assault GBH (520), robbery with aggravated circumstances (255), common assault (85), common-robbery (75) and Malicious Damage to Property (157).” The MEC lambasted the abuse of women and children that is a great concern in the area. Unlike the people of areas like eNkanini and eNdlovini (names that suggest doing things by force) as residents forcefully built their shacks and complained to the municipality for lack of infrastructure and amenities later. KwaNobuhle means a place of beauty that must always be preserved, said Majodina. She asked, “Why do you burn institutions that are aimed at making your life better - like clinics and libraries - when you complain for service delivery?” Majodina urged the residents not to destroy infrastructure and rather to nurture and preserve what they have.

Artists from all over world for One Blood REPORTER THIS month Nelson Mandela Bay will be abuzz with international artists from a variety of genres, to raise funds and awareness for the NPO “Artworks for Youth”. Among them are US Hip Hop artist Jean Grae, Australian Slam Poetry Champion Luka Lesson and New York Hip Hop photographer Mike Schreiber. “Artworks for Youth”, which operates in the Joe Slovo township, was founded by John Lombardo to provide free after school visual art instruction, mentoring, and academic support to under-served students. The common goal is to use art, performances and music as educational tools to uplift under-privileged kids and in the process enrich the country with young creative minds. From March 18 to 22 the international artists will join forces with local artists for a series of events which includes a panel discussion, a photo exhibition, a poetry evening and the One Blood music festival. The series of events will start with a photo exhibition by New York-based Mike Schreiber entitled “True Hip Hop” at Art EC at 5.30pm on March 18. Local photographers will also be showing their work. On March 20 Luka Lesson, a renowned poet and two-time slam championship winner from Sydney, will headline a poetry evening hosted at Art EC. Academically Luka holds a first-class honours degree from Monash University and has taught side-by-side with Indigenous educators and staff at the Centre for Australian Indigenous Studies. The free event which starts at 6pm also
features the thought-provoking Ntsika Tyatya and Lelethu “Poeticsoul” Mahabehlala who are both making their own waves locally and nationally. The week’s events will end with the One Blood festival on March 22, starting with a procession held at Joe Slovo by Artworks for Youth at 10am. The NPO and the children will be showcasing their third annual procession. Using large scale puppetry, music, visual art and performance to address a social issue of the learners’ choosing, their focus this year is “Education is a Right”. The procession will wind its way through the streets of their suburb whereafter the children will take taxis to town and march from the taxi rank to the Grand Hotel with their puppetry through Govan Mbeki Avenue. At the Grand Hotel the children will perform with Jean Grae as an opening act of the 5th edition of the One Blood Music Festival which will be taking place from 1pm until 11pm. The Festival will feature Jean Grae, Luka Lesson, Cape Town band D’versCT and artists from Mandela Bay such as Asanda Mqiki (Jazz), Rob Thompson (Blues), Skank N Roots (Reggae), and Umle, as well as local Hip Hop artists Schaik, Jbux, Hishaam and Adon. Headliner at the One Blood Festival, Jean Grae, is an international Hip-hop artist and the daughter of Abdullah Ibrahim. Tukani is among the Top 40 Under 40 in the Bay INDABA REPORTER FROM running her business from her mother’s lounge to moving into her own office space, and being named as one of the Top 40 Under 40s in Nelson Mandela Bay, are among the accomplishments that Puneza Tukani can already put behind her name at the young age of 27. Pumeza is the CEO and Operations Manager of Bluworld Bookkeeping and Consultancy Services. She was recently announced as one of the finalists in the Top 40 Under 40 awards run by the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber. The awards are a celebration and recognition of young business talent in the Eastern Cape as nominated by business chamber members, stakeholders, partners and the public. She got her kickstart in the business world from The Hope Factory and she attributes
this success in part to the guidance and mentorship she received after joining The Hope Factory’s programme in 2012. Her business mentors at The Hope Factory, Sherri Jeacocks and Tursuis Ruiters, worked tirelessly with this young entrepreneur focussing their attention on teaching her to grow her company’s balance sheet as well as helping her with her time and selfmanagement skills. Tukani says that this mentorship experience is invaluable and the practical aspects that she learnt including business management were eye-openers for her. She says, “The Hope Factory has helped me to understand and learn how to run my business. I am still working with them as they help me to pave the way to prosper further.” And prosper she has. In 2013, the SA Youth Council (SAYC) in Nelson Mandela Bay appointed her as its Treasurer. And, in the next five years she plans to expand her business and open more branches in the province.

Needy metro pupils receive school uniforms from MEC Majodina NCEBA DLADLA SOCIAL Development and Special Programmes MEC Pemmy Majodina was in Nelson Mandela Bay last week to hand out school uniforms to children coming from poor homes. This was part of the Department of Social Development and Special Programmes’ Annual Back to School campaign.
Of the 334 needy pupils identified from Port Elizabeth townships like Zwide, Kwazakhele and Motherwell including Walmer/Gqebera as well as KwaNobuhle and Despatch, 102 received their school uniforms at Babs Madlakane Community Hall in KwaNobuhle, on Wednesday amid great fanfare. The uniforms of the remaining 232 pupils were sent to their homes on Thursday. According to the Department’s spokesperson Gcobani Maswana, this charitable
gesture by the MEC during Human Rights Month was part of government’s plan to reach out to children in need, to create an awareness on Children’s rights and to promote community participation on issues affecting children. Furthermore, this gesture which saw about a hundred families getting food parcels and groceries, was also aimed at fighting poverty and deprivation by uplifting the living conditions of the children of the province.
MEC Majodina explained that the Special Programmes part of her department was focusing on the development of family units while their partnership with the Education and Health Departments completes the SHE “that is loving and caring.” The MEC knows hunger and deprivation. She told the gathering, “I was an orphan who grew up in the rural areas.” She assured the children that the caring government knows about their plight and would continue to support them.
Youth in Business Breakfast Debate
Women craft better future stitch by stitch

WELL-KNOWN local businessman attended a Youth Breakfast Business Debate which was held by the Young Women’s Manyano of Elliot Memorial Congregational Church in KwaNobuhle on Sunday. Panelists who injected hope into the unemployed youth in the church included businessmen Mkhuseli Jack, Mandla Madwara, and political economist from NMMU, Dr Ntsikelelo Break. Successful businessman Jack said, “You must start somewhere, even if it is selling eggs. What you need to do more is to work hard and do it right.”
According to Political Economist Ntsikelelo Break, many young people were grappling with getting funding from government and were therefore reluctant to put an x in ballot boxes. “The youth forms the biggest sector of our population, and the government must introduce anti -poverty strategies to try to help and help the youth. The government must encourage the youth, train them and impart knowledge about business so they can be independent,” said Break. Mandla Madwara said: “The church can’t keep on funding you. You must learn to sustain yourselves because we can’t always pledge and donate to churches.
STITCH by stich a group of unemployed Motherwell women are crafting a better future for them and their families. The Golden Stitches sewing cooperative, was started by 10 unemployed women in Motherwell in 2002 and has seen tremendous growth in the recent past, thanks to the commitment members displayed. Golden Stitches has, however, not been without problems as success is not achieved overnight. According to its Project Director, Nobom Plaatjies they were 10 unemployed women when they started the cooperative in 2002 today they are six. “Our hope was to help put food on the table for our families and to educate our chidren. But because money was not coming forth, some of us fell by the wayside,” Plaatjies said. The patience and commitment of those who remained behind had, however, paid off as the Department of Social Development and Special Programmes Department agreed to fund them in 2009. The Department also facilitated their move to the current premises at the Place of Safety in NU2, Motherwell. “The Social Development Department bought us machinery, materials and office
equipment. And that made a big difference,” said Plaatjies. They now offer six monthstraining to the unemployed who need skills for employment or need to start their own businesses. “Since we started, we have trained over 500 people (including men) who are now either employed or have started their own businesses,” said Plaatjies. They initially targeted women for training but realised that there were also young people who, though some had passed matric, were unemployed and in need of the skills Golden Stitches was imparting. They charge R350 for the training which is payable on registration. “We charge this minor fee for the training because people, most of the time, do not attach value to the things they receive for free,” said Plaatjies. Asked whether they experienced any challenges Plaatjies said some schools did not support them even though they only add R20 mark-up to the prices shops in town use. Not having working capital is also a problem and when the Social Development Department asked them to make school uniforms for poor children during the Back to School Campaign, it became a problem. “But, we’ll grow eventually and overcome this. Our major goal is to build a factory one day,” said Plaatjies boldly.

‘A healthy body houses a healthy mind’ NCEBA DLADLA NOTHING makes Nomathamsanqa Matiwane feel better than the way she looks.
Working out is Nomathamsanqa Tammy Matiwane. PHOTO:NCEBA DLADLA
Matiwane (30) of Sydenham is a body builder and member of the Sydenham Sports Development School at the Old Badger Building in Summer Road, Sydenham. She trains under the watchful eye of renowned physical conditioner and sports mad Billy Louw. “When I came to this gym I was too fat. I was wearing a size 38. But look
at me now, I wear a size 28,” said a glowing Matiwane, popularly known as Tammy to her friends. She does not know how much she weighed when she started training at the club almost two years ago, Matiwane said she certainly wanted to lose weight. The bug, however, bit her and since deciding to join the Body Building Club, she has not looked back. “I found in the club a caring trainer in Billy and I do not regret ever taking the decision to join body duilding. I feel so healthy and confident now that I want to encourage especially other fe-
males to join in the fun,” said Matiwane proudly. Matiwane warned that losing weight should not be seen as a sign of sickness. “Many people do not want to lose weight for fear of being labelled as sick or suffering from a certain disease. This is wrong! I want to inspire other ladies to come and train and look well,” she said. Louw agreed. “The sad reality is that we in South Africa are the second fattest nation in the world. “We need to exercise to shed the fat for healthy and positive living,” he said.
Magqabi Primary School athletes off to nationals NCEBA DLADLA TWO pupils from Magqabi Primary School in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage will be representing the Eastern Cape province in the National Schools Athletic Championships to be held in Johannesburg next week. Rambo Mngcayiya and Latiti Mbombela participated with their school-mates, Thulani Nqekeza, Nkundla Cuba, Yamkela Matomane, Thimna Sali and Lungiswa Pinyana as members of the Nelson Mandela Bay District Athletics Team which took part in the provincial championships at the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) of Technology in Mthatha last
week. “Mgcayiya took the first position in the Walk event. This he has been doing in the Zones, Districts and Regional competitions. We hope he’ll also be doing it during the national finals,” an upbeat teacher and coach Phindiwe Bulo-Thethiwe said. She was also hopeful that Mbombela, who took part in the 1200m track event and came second in the provincial finals, will bring home a medal from the national championships. “We want to thank the school principal, members of staff and the SGB for the support we received since we started with these games,” said BuloThethiwe. She also thanked all her athletes for
their commitment and dedication. “Hard work helped us achieve this feat as we trained every day from Monday to Friday in the morning and after school,” said Bulo. “We are very proud of their success. They have put our school on a higher pedestal,” said a visibly elated principal Siphiwo Hoho. According to Hoho, Magqabi Primary School was known for doing well both in academics and extra-mural activities, thanks to the commitment of the teachers and their pupils. “We encourage every child to take part in sport, arts and music. We identify and nurture children’s talents and make sure they succeed in what they are doing,” said Hoho proudly. Proud Magqabi Primary School principal Siphiwo Hoho (right) and teacher/coach Phindiwe BuloThethiwe flank the athletes with Rambo Mngcayiya and Latiti Mbombela showing their medals.

NMB turns 20 local boxers professional NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay is turning 20 amateur boxers (including one female) professional after a successful sparring test held at Caiph’s Camp in Sydenham, Port Elizabeth on Sunday. There were 25 male and one female boxing hopefuls who turned up for the much publicised test under the watchful eye of Boxing South Africa (BSA), the professional boxing control body and its Open Boxing (Amateur)
counterpart, South African National Amateur Boxing Organisation (SANABO). “Only six failed from among 26 amateur boxers who wanted to start careers in the professional ranks,” said a delighted (BSA) Nelson Mandela Bay Service Provider, Mthunzi Mapitiza. Mapitiza said his team, consisting of Ndumiso Fina (Boxing Manager), Mazizi Vumazonke and Caiphus (who both represented SANABO) agreed on being very strict when passing boxers in the lighter divisions. “It’s because competition in those divisions
is very tight. We wanted to pass quality boxers that could provide the metro municipality with champions in the not too distant future,” said Mapitiza who also showed confidence in the female boxer they passed. “She is very good. I’m sure she’s going to make her mark as soon as she gets an opportunity to fight as a pro,” said Mapitiza who also felt that the boxers they passed during the sparring session in the heavier divisions were also promising. “Of course we exercised a little bit of laxity in the heavier-divisions’ session. But the box-
Motherwell High Schools rugby tournament in full swing SELBY MADIKANE LOCAL community member and the ANC Ward 54 former Councillor and PR Councillor Sobantu Madlavu decided to join hands with Motherwell High Schools with the aim of reviving the sport of rugby. According to Motherwell High Schools President Mthuthuzeli Yoyo, the tournament has revived rugby which seemed to have been extinct. Yoyo said, “We are extremely delighted that the game of rugby is played again. Our schools show great enthusiasm. The support is also tremendous as the members of the community come in their droves to watch our thrilling games at James Jolobe High School grounds on Wednesday and on Friday afternoons. The tournament has already started with a points system and will end in a knockout system. On behalf of the Motherwell High Schools Rugby Committee, I would like to thank Mr Madlavu for the role he has played so far.
We have no financial means but this tournament makes a big difference to our schools.”
